Adam Ellwanger is a professor of English at the University of Houston – Downtown, where he teaches rhetoric and writing. In addition to those topics, his varied research interests include popular culture, political philosophy, media studies, and the American Mess writ large. Check out his dangerous new book on the modern politics of identity, entitled Metanoia: Rhetoric, Authenticity, and the Transformation of the Self.  You will also like his essay on the Human Events website: Toward a Woke Metaphysics.

Recently, he authored an open letter signed by over 180 professors that outlines forms of non-compliance that signatories will undertake in an effort to resist the current ideological trends on campus. Ellwanger also offers regular commentary at sites like Human Events, New Discourses, American Greatness, Quillette, and more. In his free time, he writes, plays guitar, drinks beer and ruby port, and listens to music. Follow him @DoctorEllwanger on Twitter.

The KunstlerCast theme music is the beautiful Two Rivers Waltz written and performed by Larry Unger.

Sharing a Wokster Tale of Woe:

Having served in a small Vermont elementary school – in a classroom run by a gender-driven classroom teacher where the students were told that, “doctors can be wrong” about determination of gender at birth with conversations about genitalia… I went from being a rather radical progressive to being quite middle of the road as either extreme today looks like the path to self-annihilation, this podcase is UNDERSTOOD AND APPRECIATED.

Crisis of authority. That is certainly what we have today.

Parallel movements. A perfect storm. That is happening.
Education has in fact became a racket.
    And so the empire falls.
    A pile of wreckage.
Of an aspiration that goes back thousands of years. Not hundreds.
So very sad for generations to come, whatever there should be.

We are indeed in the wilderness.

    Excellent program James and Adam.

It seems to the over-riding aspect of modern society is monopoly, the lack of viable competition, the trend towards oneness in all our categories of existence. Power, money and personal security are the gods of our civilization

Take politics. Democrats and Republicans form a uni-party. In religion it is secular humanism which worships Man himself as Man’s end. In business it is the increasing dominance of big business. In education, which has become a business, it is giving students whatever they want while inculcating them with dis-satisfaction with classical values.

To me the over-arching problem of our time is lack of competition and the hegemony of monopoly. I think we need more analysis using this analytical framework.

Great Interview Jim. Both yours and Adam’s analyses of wokerism, identity politics & racial issues is spot on.

Best line from Jim: “It’s a huge relief to speak with people who are not crazy .”

That was interesting James. Great guests and you are a good interviewer.

I guess the fun days in College chasing coeds, drinking beer and reading Hemingway are over.

I tell my nephews, as far as the university goes, stay away from those snake pits. Learn a trade, acquire some skills, become an independent person.

Apparently other people are giving the same advice, as I’ve read that campuses are 60% women now. As for the 40% who are men, the ones I’ve seen don’t look much like men.

Donald Trump as “a tool… a rock to throw in their eye”. Perfect description of Trump’s role in the whole absurd production of the past four years. Not to save “We the People”, but to pretend to save us. And to fail. Fail unbelievably. And through his failure to provide an excuse to punish those of whom he claimed to be the champion. Not that any excuse was needed of course. Yet another Pied Piper. But in a post-modern nihilist twist, this horn blower was working for the rats. Now the rats are movin’ in.

I teach at a small nonprofit that specializes in teaching various crafts such as metalwork, woodworking, glass, and clay. Wokesterism is alive and well here and it’s maddening.
