Surfing the cable channels the evening before my Friday a.m. blog duties, I came upon Sean Hannity at Fox News completely losing his shit in a colloquy with Geraldo Rivera about the Iran drone incident. “Bomb the crap out of them!” Mr. Hannity ranted, several times, the veins in his neck throbbing visibly on the high-def screen. I thought I was having an acid flashback to Doctor Strangelove. Geraldo himself seemed a bit nonplussed and embarrassed by Mr. Hannity’s tantrum, but his attempts to calm down the raving anchorman only ramped up the hysteria. One wondered: are there any adult producers off-screen on that network?

Perhaps the Golden Golem of Greatness, our president, who is also known to follow the Cable TV news, witnessed the cringeworthy incident and realized that every other head-of-state on this nervous planet would also see it, and might infer he was doing the bidding of a crazed boob-tube performer if he actually went forward with an air strike. Earlier, he’d told reporters, “You’ll soon find out,” what the USA’s response to the drone shoot-down would be. He should have just kept his mouth shut. Planes and ships were on their way to the bottleneck in the Persian Gulf known as the Straits of Hormuz. Before they could deliver any payloads, Mr. Trump called the whole thing off suggesting that maybe some “loose and stupid” Colonel Borat type on Iran’s side had gone rogue in the incident.

Is there some virus loose in this land that is turning anyone in authority here into reincarnations of the Three Stooges? The illness is certainly not concentrated on either the Right or the Left. There’s plenty of craziness all around. America’s cup runneth over with some toxic agent that interferes with thinking. It’s most conspicuous among what was formerly considered the Thinking Class, since minus thinking they have no identity at all.

Imagine The New York Times presenting a coherent idea! Today, The Times is celebrating the New York State legislature’s passage of harsh new laws against sexual harassment: Sex Harassment Laws Toughened in New York: ‘Finally, This Is Happening.’ Can you guess what the unintended consequences of this “happening” will be? I’ll tell you: men who run companies (there are some) will avoid hiring women because men and women who are not sexually neutered behave as sexual beings when they spend a lot of time together. You can only pretend to regulate that — especially in a culture as devoid of traditional manners as the US has become — and if the regulations are stringent, any sentient CEO will hear the cloven hoofbeats of personal injury lawyers pounding down the hall of the C-Suite behind every moderately attractive female job-seeker. Or, perhaps the CEOs will just move their companies to another state. Nice going, NY State legislature and our grandstanding guv, Mr. Cuomo.

On the national scale here in Crazyland, we have on the docket in Congress reparations for descendants of slaves, another fabulously bad idea. Could it be that the Democratic Party is only dangling this giant goodie-bag out now because black America is rumored to be disenchanted with life on the Democratic plantation?  And without them, they can’t possibly win a national election? The unintended consequences of the proposal were nicely set forth in congressional testimony by a 23-year-old philosophy undergrad from Columbia University named Coleman Hughes who writes frequently for the Quillette website (and several major media platforms) on US race politics. The hearing room was incandescent with Wokester suspense when Hughes was called to speak, and he laid it out with stark eloquence:

     …the people who were owed for slavery are no longer here, and we’re not entitled to collect on their debts. Reparations, by definition, are only given to victims. So, the moment you give me reparations, you’ve made me into a victim without my consent. Not just that: you’ve made one-third of black Americans—who consistently poll against reparations—into victims without their consent, and black Americans have fought too long for the right to define themselves to be spoken for in such a condescending manner.

Ouch! That stung a little! Naturally the room erupted in boos and catcalls of Wokester indignation. (Did he actually say that!) You could hear the sentimental arguments of Ta-Nihisi Coates just gurgle down the drain. (Watch the five-minute YouTube.) Of course, this reparations cherry on the over-baked victimhood cake would arouse so much resentment and disappointment from all concerned (repeat ALL concerned, black and white), that any hope for social comity in this sore beset nation would lie moldering in the grave… along with John Brown, Martin Luther King, and 360,000 Union dead.

        Aside from the obvious pandering for black votes, the idea of handing out lots of free money to people that have not earned it has a number of other plusses for the sellout in government. Just as a majority of lottery winners piss away their winnings in the blink of the eye and somewhat boost the economy, handing out free money will certainly boost the sales of cool cars and other frivolous shit and bring the government much revenue in sales taxes. There is nothing more depressing to any government entity than seeing potential American consumers sitting on boxes of cash or saving it in any other fashion. Government needs cash flow in order to stick their hands into the flow and take their share, Handing out free money to people that will piss it away quickly is a sure fired means of increasing government revenues at our expense.

          Yes, so this in effect becomes a hidden tax through the devaluation of what is printed money .

          Many people still envision the government sleeping on a pile of gold. The money just magically falls from the sky. They do not understand that the gov is beyond broke and the only way they can “give” something away is to print the money and devalue the money that people already have, devaluing the money already in peoples hands and hence the hidden tax.

        No White Republican at this meeting said anything. Terrified of losing what they don’t have – the Black vote. And of prominent Republicans, only McConnell said he was against it. The rest are AWOL, selfish non-boat rockers that they are. And all the Democratic candidates are for it. Of course. So if it keeps up at this rate, they’ll get it. As the old saying goes, For Evil to triumph it is simply necessary for good men to do nothing.

          Ann Coulter has said that Republicans care only about tax cuts, the embassy in Jerusalem, and abortion.
          I’d agree with her, but the part about abortion isn’t true.
          They only care about abortion when it’s election time, especially if they are looking to throw an election.
          The rest of the time, they sit there with their mouths shut when a governor talks about infanticide.

            Immigration is the most important issue right now. Ann tells the truth whether people like it or not. Her criticisms of the Republicans sound right to me. They make themselves out to be conservatives and nationalists during the campaign. Then they basically move to the left or do nothing in office. I am sure Democrats have similar complaints from the opposite side.

    I offer an aside about the reparation hearings; they took place on Juneteenth, the celebration of the announcement of emancipation in Texas, the last Confederate state to get the news. Symbolism! It was also National Martini Day, so drink up.

    Honestly, I was expecting talk of impeachment today. However, there will be lots of opportunities to do that over the course of the year, while reparations is much more time-critical.

    Elevated temperatures causes mental machinery to get gummed up. That couuld explain some of it. The climbing thermometer will cause even more crazy as the temperature rises but with the golden one as wartime POTHUS the crazy train could completely derail. More crazy will be unnecessary then as the world cleanses itself in one big Bolt-On boom.

      Actually its been cool and rainy on the east coast.

      I’m assuming Fox News studios where Hannity was, and the Halls of Congress where the reparation hearings were held, were adequately air conditioned.

      One thing I’ve noticed on local and national news lately is that the phrase “because of global warming” is added on to the end of many stories. For example ” … a line of fierce thunderstorms moving thru the area (because of global warming)”? … “this may prove to be a challenging mosquito season (because of global warming)”

      Or “mental machinery to get gummed up (due to global warming)”

        John Stewart from the Daily show did a segment where all the news media were blaming everything on Global Warming, even though I believe the science behind it, it is humorous to see everything blamed on the G.W. I miss John and George Carlin.

            you might appreciate that virtue signalling and in the process maintaining the victimhood of long past atrocious crimes is not to anyone’s advantage. Wrapping oneself in the blanket of victimhood damages all of us.

            You seem to have some emotional investment in the need to label me a virtue signaller, which is overriding logical reasoning.

            Perhaps I didn’t make point clearly enough the last time.

            I have no idea why you would think I’d have a problem with Mr Hughes’ position. I have none. But I fail to see the connection with the conversation on the previous thread which still seems to irk you.

            Let me try again.

            I am not a proponent of reparations, either for black people or for Jewish people. Nor am I a proponent of Jewish people endlessly bewailing their particularly horrendous history.

            From what I recall you compared their suffering with that of the Yemenis, Libyans, Syrians and others I don’t recall (sorry).

            But here’s the thing. I haven’t seen a plethora of alt-right websites engaged in Syrian war denial, or Yemeni bombing denial, or Rwandan genocide denial or Gulag denial (apologetics, yes, but not denial) or anything else that you can logically compare with the effort that has gone into Holocaust denial.

            And the thing is that the Holocaust deniers have a very clear purpose, all these years later, in trying to spread their lies

            So as long as deniers continue to deny, for that very obvious reason, people have a duty to call them out on it, since it’s not OK to have new generations falling for for their lies.

            This has no connection whatsoever with victimhood and even less with reparations. But if that emotional need in regard to that virtue signalling thing is strong in you, as I said before, be my guest and go for it.

            2) You have accused me of calling you names. Not true, I called your actions names.

            3) I have not said you have a problem with Hughes’ statement, but pointed out that he is saying something you need to hear.

            3a) I am not “irked.” We are having an intellectual discussion, not a personal conversation.

            4) The fact that you don’t recall the countries that I mentioned, and the suffering of present-day victims proves my point exactly. We need to move on and deal with present circumstances.

            5) Alt-right, or left, democrat, republican, nothing ever fits that neatly into those opposing boxes.

            6) What do you think the holocaust deniers are trying to accomplish? Is it a nefarious plan to bring back the nazis? Whenever a people are forbidden, by law, to discuss certain topics they becomes irresistible.

            7) There is a very strong connection between victimhood and clinging to long-past wrongs done. With time one needs to forgive, and forget, to move on. Hitler is not some evil monster that sprouted fully formed from the bowels of the earth, but a human being, like the rest of humanity who unfortunately are capable of repeating his very deeds. Excoriating others about the evils of their ways solves nothing and tends to reinforce them.

            8) My need is not emotional, but ethical. We are having a discussion, it is not personal.

            I’m afraid I haven’t the slightest idea what that even means.

            I still don’t understand why you think Mr Hughes’ position is ‘something I need to hear’. It’s not a view that is in any way unfamiliar to me.

            I am not advocating perpetual victimhood for Jewish people. If Holocaust denial were not an increasing phenomenon, we wouldn’t be having this conversation in the first place.

            I didn’t suggest that people should not be permitted by law to discuss ‘certain topics’. They can discuss all they want, but if they write lies they can expect people to call them out on those lies. I am at a loss to understand why you would want their lies to go unchallenged.

Sort of like a microagression. If anything don’t you think its curious or am I just seeing things again?

            I don’t think it’s remotely curious. I used capitals for nationalities and ethnicities (I think – I’ve never monitored my usage in these matters so I don’t overthink it). But black and white are colours – they aren’t nationalities or ethnicities. I don’t use a starting cap. for ‘white’ either. Or for short or tall.

            So, yes, I expect you are just seeing things 🙂 . Which is unsurprising, I suppose, given your preoccupations.

            I don’t use the expression ‘blacks’ or ‘whites’ anyway – I would tend to say ‘black people’ or ‘white people’. Just my habit, but I’m sure someone somewhere could think up an interpretation if they need one.

    Coleman Hughes was 100% correct as is Candace Owens on everything I have ever heard her speak about.
    I wish she would run for office as a foil to the nutty AOC.

      That is the only reason this is being discussed. Notice how the Progressive Left is doing everything it can to lay the groundwork for civil war. It’s coming anyway but they want it to happen completely on their terms.

            Aside from the fact that the “Progressive Left is NOT doing everything it can to lay the groundwork for civil war”, who & what exactly are these ‘good ole boys’?

            From all I can see, they’re generally gun-lovers – nay, enthusiasts indeed -, organized into informal militias who get together of a weekend and shoot bullets for fun.

            Then, I must extrapolate, that they sit around griping about the ‘Libruls’ and how they’re ‘gonna whup ass’ when the time comes and the final actual cause of this imaginary, constructed civil war occurs.

            However, what are they up against? The most militarized police forces in history, thanks to the PATRIOT Act and surplus war theatre machinery.

      The idea of reparations is such an obvious non-starter, that even those who advocate it know it will never happen. It has been put forward by race baiters simply to “sniff out orthodoxy” (as Orwell used to say) among among Dem troopers, i.e. their readiness to fleece white yobs in their districts or states. The congress will study the idea to death and then probably come with a proposal to give poor blacks some federal welfare “topper” in lieu of “reparations” to ensure they vote donkey till there is not one whitey dink left at Harvard and not one serviceable road or bridge left in America.

        If no arrests come before the elections, they may just have a chance of beating the incumbent, because a lot of Americans still don’t know about or understand what just happened.

        SSL, I just came back from a visit to a long-lost [second] cousin in Arizona – he spends much of his time on ancestry.com as he is retired from the USAF & police.

        He recently informed me that a great-grandfather owned a dozen slaves, several of which were white and even one Chinese.

        Does this mean we should ship more money to China, as a payoff? I do remember reading some of the awful stunts that were done to Chinese who labored on the railroads, such as sending them into tunnels with a pack of dynamite and then setting it off before they came out.

        And the poor white trash were were serfs / slaves for great-grandpa? Oh dear, it does get complicated…

It’s funny too because I have never really heard of Chinese Americans demanding reparations and yet many of them were treated brutally when the railroads were being built like you point out. I don’t think many Whites even realize that yes in fact there were many White slaves too so hearing your cousins story is a good thing. More people need to hear about what really happened rather than the packaged up narratives the mainstream would have us believe.

          Now, firstly, let me state unequivocally that I am NOT for reparations in any form. That said, Speedy, can I ask – does your friend’s family have a measurable wealth, relative to ‘the average’, or perhaps you?

          In any case, an argument could be made that the descendants of slave-running property owners still enjoy some of the residual wealth arising from those times. It would be interesting to learn how much of that wealth survived the Civil War, and where it resides now.

      Despite the obvious truth of what you have said above marcus, I think reparations is a terrible idea on many levels. First, it cannot, would not, and has not improved to any significant degree, the lives of the great great grandchildren of former slaves and, in fact, would surely make them worse. Namely as permanent victims.

      Does anyone know if reparations have ever been successfully tried among any of the enslaved peoples from the time of the Peloponnesian War, the Roman Empire and on to the present?

    The craziness is most obvious right here at home, but the metaphor has a literal application at the global scale. We’re all marinated in a soup of toxic materials that does much harm to both physical and mental processes. How much that adds to the plain old dim-witted nastiness humans have always been able to demonstrate is hard to quantify, but it is having an effect. Of course, the practical challenges of getting by in this current circus of institutional theft and insanity create their own pressures as well. One can only hope that lunacy is peaking along with the rest of our problems, though we have seen that hope by itself is not enough to get much accomplished.

    My two bits on the drone incident:

    The flight pattern of the American UAV RQ-4 Global Hawk (US insists that the MQ-4C Triton was shot down).

    The drone flew out of the air base in the UAE, after which it approached the border of Iran’s airspace and began to follow along it with a turn to the south-east. Later, already over the Gulf of Oman, it turned and headed back along the border. Without reaching the Strait of Hormuz, RQ-4 entered into Iranian airspace, where it was shot down by the Hordad-3 complex, confidently hitting a drone worth about $200 million.

    Iran also lists the coordinates where the drone was hit, and also states that in its territorial waters it raised some fragments of RQ-4. The Pentagon continues to insist that the RQ-4 did not enter Iranian airspace and was shot down over international waters.

    My working hypothesis is that some flight sergeant was paid a million bucks to enter last minute change into the drone flight program, forcing it to enter Iranian air-space at a certain moment, where it was already awaited by Iranian anti-aircraft crew, quite possibly notified by the same people who initiated the change of drone’s flight program in the first place.

    The real African Slavers were from the Arabian Peninsula and N Africa …. it estimated between the 4th century and 1890, 35 million to 40 million blacks were forcibly brought out of east Africa by the Arabs until the British Navy finally put and end to in 1891. Muslim Corsairs also cruised the coasts of western and northern Europe, raiding village and towns for white slaves .. in the Americas, Portugese and Spaniards were the original slavers starting around 1520. After awhile other western powers joined in, including Sweden, Denmark and the Netherlands. Out of the 12 million black Africans brought to the Americas 1520-1830, 355,000 were brought into what is now the US. The vast majority went to Portugese held Brazil, the Spanish Main, and British Caribbean. US slavery was small potatos.

    The best place for rich blacks like Danny Glover and Tesi Coates to solicit more swag for african slavery is Saudi Arabia — they have the deepest pockets and historically, are the most complicit. Only thing iis I don’t know the Prince will respond.

            No it’s not preferable and I didn’t say I liked it. But inequalities have and will always exist. IMO it is due to factors both external and internal to the individual. My point was simply that many people have imperfect situations in the marriage arena and divorce seems like the best and easy answer but it doesn’t mean it is. Life is hard and a helping hand means alot. Even when you don’t see eye to eye. So if it is an alliance for survival so be it.

    You’ve really captured the heart of the issue, JHK. If you have to depend upon law to maintain order, your society is headed for what Reagan called the ash heap of history.

    Every Democratic presidential candidate since 1984 has been a lawyer. Every single one, despite the dangly nature of their genitals or their ancestry. Lawyers see the world as an instrument to be hammered by the tool they wield, and they’ve wielded it ever more forcefully, first against black Americans, now against the rest of us.

    It shouldn’t surprise anyone that Andrew Cuomo, like his father, is a lawyer. He has learned to use force or the threat of force to obtain his way, rather than having to compromise or seek the golden mean amongst parties. The result is the diktat that you highlight, which will help kill more small companies that can not afford the legal fees to fight off the lawfare.

            What if the experiment isn’t working though? Our system of government was not made for an irreligious, multicultral society. That’s why the Constitution is slowly being erased through the judicial system and Congress doesn’t do a thing about it. Ideally it would be great if our system worked and thus nothing needed changing. I just don’t think its going to be that easy.

            Why do you expect Congress to be the one to preserve the Constitution? The business of Congress is to pass laws. The Constitution serves as a check on what laws Congress can pass. It is an impediment to them.

            Can you name a “strong man” that left a long lasting legacy of wonderfulness? Hitler? Stalin? Mussolini? Mao? Ceau?escu? Anyone? Who is your model?

      Andrew Cuomo wants to be president. He is running for president right now.
      Andrew has a little problem, his support for politicians like Sheldon Silver, who were making life in NYS government Hell on Earth for women.
      New York State government has been way, way behind the rest of the world on this.
      So what can he do now, to make himself acceptable to the party that claims to be all about women?
      Hence, that crazy and unnecessary new abortion law.
      To be clear (I hate that phrase, but I think I must use it here), Andrew Cuomo did not give women any new rights with that one. In fact, he took away a law that women had clamored for.
      There aren’t any women who felt the need to abort their baby just before or at birth.
      The Supreme Court had already made allowances for the rare instances when third trimester abortions were sought.

      New York already had sexual harassment policies and laws. Cuomo and the legislature chose not to enforce exising laws.
      Look up one Mark Alan Siegel, for instance.
      He left office abruptly amid a harassment scanda back in the 1990s.
      This is the same man who showed up on the leaked Podesta tapes.
      He wasn’t back in the Democrats’ good graces, he never actually left them.

      Cuomo’s hand-picked sorry joke of an ethics panel never did take up the issue of whether it was ethical for the Assembly’s Speaker to pay hush money to women who were harassed and molested by Vito Lopez. No, Cuomo is quite comfortable swimming and that putrid swamp.
      But to make up for it, tell you what, ladies, you get “rights” you never needed or wanted, plus a phony new harassment deal that will only apply to those politically out of favor for some reason.

        I like the line that James Longstreet was quoted as saying in the movie, “Gettysburg” that “We should have freed the slaves and THEN fired on Fort Sumter”. Heck, they could have kept the slaves on the plantations by simply paying them a pathetically low wage and then deducting for room, board and meals and clothing. You know like they do at Amazon and Walmart and the others that employ wage slaves.

          James Longstreet’s preferred option was never on the menu, Walter B. The stakes of expanding slavery westward were that either slavery would remain concentrated in the old South, or else the proceeds of western expansion would be captured by the slaveowners who would thus dominate the entire country.

          It was free workingmen in the North who supplied the popular opposition to having slavery in the new western states. Not out of solidarity with the enslaved, but the opposite: fear of being in competition with them. Slave labour (being stolen) was zero-cost labour, putting people who work for a wage at a permanent structural disadvantage. Nobody wins but the owners. Not exactly the way to build a sturdy middle class, eh?

          The slaveowners needed federal policy to support their cause of owning westward expansion. Being denied this, they tried to take their bat and ball* and go home, to which the federal government unsurprisingly responded “nuh-uh”. Neither side actually gave a toss about the slaves themselves; it was the vicissitudes of war and nothing else that put an end to the long crime committed against them. People today who indulge in loose talk about a second civil war in the USA should keep in mind that the most unexpected results can become all too likely.

          * I.e. their whips and chains.

According to one study, per-worker productivity in cotton agriculture increased by a factor of four in the decades leading up to the civil war. Gary North’s account draws an explicit distinction between the methods employed by John McDonogh and those that prevailed in the wider economy of the antebellum south. From this, I consider it reasonable to conclude that, as a matter of historical fact, it was indeed whips and chains that achieved those gains in productivity, with Mr. McDonogh’s methods representing an exception to the general rule.

            Now, I am all in favour of a way of doing things that doesn’t extract value from people through the omnipresent threat of torture, as opposed to one that does. So to that extent, Mr. McDonogh’s methods could be called praiseworthy in context. But I for one would not call them praiseworthy in retrospect. Per the article, Mr. McDonogh was clever enough to incentivize the people he enslaved such that, by the time he released them from bondage, each one had enriched him sufficiently to do the same to two more again. This to me smacks more of cunning than benevolence. To put it simply, slavery remains slavery, an evil in itself.

            Sure, the concept of owning a human revolts you. But it strikes me as a childish attitude that ignores the reality of slavery.

            The whips were necessary because a slave learns to do just enough work to avoid being whipped, and no more. Like living in a communist country where “they pretend to pay us, and we pretend to work.” If you give a slave his freedom without freeing his mind, you’ve done him a greater disservice than by keeping him enslaved, since he will have no other source of support if his engrained minimal effort does not provide a buffer.

            Having enslaved someone, it’s the slaver’s responsibility to free that person, body and mind. I’d love to see what happened to the slaves freed by McDonogh: did they go on to further success (at least until the holocaust of the civil war destroyed much of the wealth of the South) with the talents that they used to free themselves?

            Your article mentions the following: “Technological changes, including the introduction of improved cotton varieties, contributed significantly to this growth.” that sounds like plant breeding and the cotton gin, moving Slave labor out of ginning cotton and back to picking it and working the fields. Increased yields per plant would have increased slave labor productivity by allowing more cotton to be picked in the same area and time, no?

            Meanwhile, industrial labor productivity essentially doubled in the non-slave Northeast, from 1820 to 1860:

You’ll recall it was an innocent child who blurted out the evidence of his eyes, having failed to learn from the sophisticated adults around him who preferred their happy consensus. For myself, I would choose to model myself on that child, not the adults. I feel beholden to brute reality, even if widely-promulgated narratives would give me license to overlook it. So I’m content with being labeled childish.

            I’ll also make no objection to your saying that ‘If you give a slave his freedom without freeing his mind, you’ve done him a greater disservice than by keeping him enslaved’, even though I disagree. If it’s true (which I do not grant, but if) that someone newly freed from bondage is ill-prepared to make use of their freedom, that is a disservice done to them by the institution of slavery, not by the act of freeing them from it. A society that holds freedom as a value is faced with the task of preparing each person to play their part in the society’s institutions, each according to their gifts. Enslaving people in no way serves this purpose; as you point out, whips and chains militate against it. Mr. McDonogh’s example serves as the exception that proves the rule.

            I disagree with you on this point because I don’t conceive of this question in terms of the welfare, narrowly conceived, of the enslaved person. Instead, I conceive it in light of that familiar phrase, all men are created equal. Those words, penned in 1776, were a rejection of an older theory of society in favour of a new one. The older theory rested on the assumption that there are different kinds of people — some who are fit to rule, and others (the vast majority) who are fit to be ruled. The new theory proposes that there is only one kind of person, and that rule is to be achieved via institutions answerable to the people. And if any institution depends on some being fit to rule while others are fit to be ruled, it’s slavery. Once you’ve accepted the new theory, as I have, outcomes that rely on the old theory for their legitimacy lose their patina of inevitability, no matter what just-so stories people tell that paint them that way. I consider mine a principled objection not just to slavery, but to other unjust power relations as well. I’ll leave it to you to consider how childish that is.

            On Thomas Jefferson and his lofty rhetoric, I’d quote Samuel Johnson: “How is it that we hear the loudest yelps for liberty among the drivers of negroes?” look at what people DO, not what they SAY. I had a youthful attraction to TJ and the Declaration Of Independence; I still think it’s great rhetoric.

            To say that slavery ought to end is easy. To truly end slavery is the question, and what needs to be done. I quote from the Washington Post some words from LBJ:
            The ‘To Fulfill These Rights’ speech is widely known as the intellectual framework for affirmative action. Johnson spoke of racial injustice and economic disparities between blacks and whites. “You do not take a person who, for years, has been hobbled by chains and liberate him, bring him up to the starting line of a race and then say, ‘You are free to compete with all the others,’ and still justly believe that you have been completely fair. Thus it is not enough just to open the gates of opportunity. All our citizens must have the ability to walk through those gates,” Johnson said.

            The Affirmative Action programs that LBJ birthed as a result of this sentiment have not done great things, and have sowed societal discord. I don’t think that that undermines the sentiment, however (also, this speech marked the beginning of the social decay and collapse of the black family, a group whose rising economic and social power from the 20s through the 50s LED to the civil rights movement). I think you think the same.

            Slavery has both physical and mental components. Compare some bully who regularly physically assaults another.getting him to stop ought not be he goal of society, like ending slavery, but having him redress damages; if he broke the bullied person’s finger, he should pay to make up the loss. If he damaged the bullied person’s spirit so he is still bullied in his mind (in both minds, as a matter of fact), the bullied person isn’t free until that mental state is changed.

            McDonogh freed his slaves, body and mind. The US only freed the bodies.

            You might appreciate Jane Jacobs’ ideas on “the end of the plantation age,” which she saw approaching (in the early 60s) as a time when power and fear took a back seat to suasion. As we have culturally collapsed since then, we’ve used more force and laws to achieve what was previously obtained with empathy. But it’s still a great vision; in contrast to lofty rhetoric written by liars (look at what TJ did, not what he said), it’s something each of us can accomplish in his own life.

    The downing of a US drone is bad but not something I am willing to go to war over. Just call it pay back for us downing Iranian Air Flight 655 in 1988.

    If we bomb Iran, I have no doubt the whole area will erupt in chaos. I am not willing to send anymore of our young over to die in that meat grinder protecting KSA and the oil. A war with Iran will not be a walk in the park like the Iraq war. Even with the Iraq war being a walk in the park in the initial invasion, the post war Iraq still managed to cost us dearly in terms of $ and lives lost over many years.

    You also must consider the other world players. Do you think China and Russia want us to start a war in Iran. I think they do because they know it will cost the US dearly.

      Iran is a regional power—not a superpower. A true war with the USA would be an existential moment for their leadership, and would likely lead to nukes. And once nukes are involved—everyone loses. That includes Russia and China.

      Right now the conflict is the equivalent of a tiger and a hyena spatting from a distance. Some growling. Some spitting. Let’s keep it that way.

          And then there’s the wildcard: Israel. I doubt they could resist the opportunity to thoroughly divest a wounded Iran of all its nuclear capability. Iraq would also involve itself to settle scores. Iran would very quickly resemble Syria.

    What did America ever do to deserve this? Oh yeah, Viet nam, Chile, Central America, Iran X2…first destroy the democratically elected leadership and install the Shah, then this….NK, attempt to overthrow Maduro, change the Supreme Court direction, NRA vaseline jobbers, nut case evangelicals,…fuck me, the place is a joke falling apart. The sooner the better, imho.

    Great descriptive writing today, JHK. The sentiment expressed is pretty much as jaded as I feel about the partisan zealotry too. Moreover, the lack of true introspection on the part of punditry [JHK is the exception here] leaves me as perplexed as you are except you are older & wiser so that’s why I am a loyal follower leftie.

    Yesterday I learned that the average stock on Wall Street is owned bought/sold for a time duration of approximately seven seconds in our newfound High Frequency Trading environment. Right after the Second World War the average stock ownership time duration was approximately four to eight years in contradistinction to the extreme instability of our current environment. In brief, I am starting to think that long term thinking & introspection has been largely replaced by short-termism & an inability to actually think long term or as a mature contemplative that is capable of focused introspection given the noise factor of short-termism & frenzied rush to judgement cognitive disarray.

    I appreciate the way you organize your thoughts logically and without all the white noise that typically screws up cognitive processing. Most on the right are not pragmatic or even reasonable as critics of the right/left. You deserve credit for thinking on both sides of the coin whereas most writers just express their inherent biases with partisan tripe that is not worthy of reading as it just adds to the noise level of distraction.

    What I can count on here on Clusterfuck Nation is a clear signal instead of all the God damned noise of partisanship which is tiresome at best everywhere else on Internet.

    The lack of insight for most is that they can’t think over the long term of perspective because they are far too strung out on the short term incremental political bets they are making daily to even see the forest for the trees.

    Thinking requires vision, and vision is really in short supply these days so I really appreciate the vision you express weekly as few really have any at all to express because they simply don’t engage in mature contemplative thought these days.

    The toxic agent? There’s a few; ego, money, power, the removal of societal fetters on personal conduct. Combine, stir, go nuts.

    How do you account for AOC’s raising the specter of Nazi Germany by her characterization of border detention centers as concentration camps? Preposterous? You bet. Maybe her education is highly deficient. Maybe character-wise she has no sense of proportion.

    Or maybe she’s lost her marbles. Whatever the case, she’s not the only loon. She’s right, proclaims Vox, as if there’s any reasonable parallel. There isn’t and nobody with an ounce of sense would try to make one. A Polish politician heard what she said and scoffed, offering to give AOC a guided tour of an actual concentration camp from WW2.

    “This is a crisis for ourselves” sez AOC. Yes it is, in more ways than one, AOC’s earnest justifications for what she said not helping her cause, if she has a cause beyond her own notoriety. This is a descent into crazyland and to parallel AOC’s own ornate reasoning, this is a slow gradual process of degrading thought from a rational basis that represents the world, to thought that has no bearing on the real.

    There’s a wide array of people straying outside the bounds of sanity, not just the nut-bars on the Right, but those on the Left, people that tout their intellectual and moral superiority.

    The universe is an unforgiving place. It doesn’t reward unreason, dealing out harsh penalties for disregarding reality. Ask the Germans seeing as we’re talking about them. In the 1940s they went full lunatic and they paid the price. More recently, the USA debilitated itself by its excursions into the fantastical realms of neo-liberal ideology.

    I would implore AOC to get real. Alternatively, don’t get stupid. There’s no percentage in it.

      volodya: AOC’s position on the facilities where the USA is housing migrants along its southern border is both principled and correct.

      The term concentration camp dates back well over a century. It described the tactic of rounding up people who were considered dangerous and ‘concentrating’ them in an enclosed location, so as to separate them from the wider population. Such tactics were used variously by the Spanish in Cuba, before the Spanish-American war; by the British during the Boer War in South Africa; and by the Germans in their colony in what is now Namibia in 1904. They have also been used multiple times by the United States: to control native populations during the period of western expansion in the 19th century; against Americans of Japanese ancestry during WWII; and during America’s war in Vietnam. And of course, and most famously, they were used by Germany in the 1930s and 1940s. Now the USA is employing them again to deal with migrants from Latin America. Everything old is new again.

      What the Trump administration is doing is shameful, and well deserves the comparisons people (not just AOC) are making. It’s not only that local authorities are so strapped for resources that they’re holding hundreds of people outdoors for weeks at a time, in what have been described as ‘human dog pounds’:

      It’s that at the federal level, the Trump administration has and is administering affirmatively inhumane and degrading treatment, as a stated policy of deterrence. This includes taking children away from their parents, many of whom will never be reunited; destroying water caches that can be the difference between life and death for desperate people crossing the desert; blasting air conditioning so that those who survive are effectively being held in refrigerators, with only the clothes they wore to traverse the desert; on and on.

      The difference between what the Trump administration is doing right now, and the most infamous kinds of treatment of refugees and displaced populations* during the 20th century, isn’t one of kind. It’s only one of degree. And it’s only likely to get worse. That’s why the term ‘concentration camp’ is due and proper.

It’s the job of the president, and ICE, to come up with solutions, and the kind of solutions they implement is something they’re responsible for. Trump wanted the job, he got the job, and now he can damn well be held to account for how he uses his power.

          To my ears, blaming people who are desperate enough to leave their homes and brave the desert just for a chance doesn’t sound very humane. There are standards for how human beings should be treated, whether you’re planning to send people back where they came from or not. Nobody wants that burden, but decency demands nothing less. As for the Trump administration’s actual policies, and their cable-news defenders, they sound a lot like a self-pitying husband saying “Now look what you made me do!”, just before he hits his wife again.

            These people are ADULTS, and therefore responsible for the choices they make.
            I personally know people from places south of our border who came here in accordance with law and who kept their families safe while doing so.

            What about the people from Congo? They were so desperate they bought tickets on international flights?
            There are legal ports of entry to the country.

            People removed from there homes and forced into camps isn’t different to you than people who up and left?

            I don’t think the American president is responsible for making things nice for large numbers of gate crashers.

            I moved to Germany legally (from the US). Had I decided to just overstay my visa, they’d have shipped me home. It was not an easy process in many ways, and the reverse was true for my wife when she got a Green Card for the US, years ago.

    When either Republicans or Democrats attain power they know that opposition goes on sabbatical until the third year of the second term for the incumbent. Both houses of Congress plan their vacations around those terms of sabbatical so that they can relax & go on extended vacations on the public dime.

    Once a party attains power the probability of leadership ending prematurely is pretty well nil given the historical record. Nixon was the exception due to his personality. Clinton was the embarrassment of the nation & world when it became publically known that he had defiled the Oral Office & a red dress.

    Bible belt America cannot tolerate blowjobs in the Oral Office of the D.C. Whore House. That was simply too much reality to endure for class consciousness to stay quiet without impeachment proceedings guiding the path to political & moral improvement via the invasion of Iraq with requisite false flag for the cover-up of malignant intention.

    The George W. Bush torture regime at least distracted the good American Christians away from the focus on Clinton’s Cuban cigars and America’s oral fixations.

    It’s interesting that America developmentally matriculated to the phallic stage of war in Iraq just after exiting the oral stage of development with the Democrats as the Clinton era ended.

One would have expected the usual pugnacious Israeli flag-waving a’la Shapiro or Hannity. Things aren’t just falling apart, they are disintegrating.

        I think the best work Jones did was his interview with Russell Means. Most memorable line: “Americans…want… convenience.”

    More and more each day I consider a change of venue.

    Leading candidates are Ireland and Switzerland.

    One has sentimental value and is most likely off the radar. The other is landlocked with mountainous barriers.

    Ireland is more approachable from a financial and cultural perspective. I might not have enough money for the Swiss but it should be safer.

      Yeah, how are you going to stay there? You can’t just show up. You need to either have an employer who vouches that you have special skills that would enable you to get a work permit, or a spouse who is a national.

      Then you have to apply for permanent residence after 5-6 years of solid employment and later citizen ship, if you choose.

    A vignette of American life:
    The neighbor’s boy went to his high school prom the other evening.
    We say “the prom” where I live, other places call it “prom”.
    It seems to be an American tradition.

    What was slightly different about this couple, at least from prom couples in my day, was that the girl is bi-racial. Interracial couples at the prom are nothing new, but it used to be almost exclusively the male half being black and the female being white.

    I looked at the prom photos in the paper, and the boy next door and his date, while different from my era, did not stand out at the dance, because there were quite a few couples with a white boy and a black girl, even dark-skinned black girls now date white boys.

    Everybody looked happy, vibrant, and full of hope for the future, just the way youth should look.
    If they and their parents are careful about where the kids go on to higher education at, most of these kids will enter adulthood just as free from hateful notions as they are right now.
    God forbid they attend a cesspit like Oberlin.

    When “they” in the MSM, and our politicians tell us where we are on race, they are holding a mirror up to their biased and obsessed selves.
    The real world has moved on.

    It looks like the dynamic duo (Bolton, Pompeo) have made Trump look the incompetent fool again, and by extent the country, to the whole world.
    Who’s in charge at this point? Trump has said that part of the deal in which he accepted Bolton and Pompeo was that there would be no war. They don’t seem to want to hold to that deal.
    I believe that if we go to war with Iran it will be the last nail in the coffin of America’s supremacy.

      One caveat: Most Hispanics are Mestizos, an Indian and White mixture. The proportions vary wildly, with many pure or almost pure Indios around as well. The ones who are almost White could blend in if they wanted to – but they will prefer to be the Leaders of the Invasion, and possibly the Founding Fathers and Mothers of a New Nation.     About everything for the past day

    Over the past day, so many epoch-making events have occurred that one glance at the list of headlines is enough to make your head spin, and a second look at how these events are covered in the media enough to cause you to throw up.

    1. The storming of the Georgian parliament due to the fact that the Chairman of the Inter-Parliamentary Assembly of Orthodoxy (MAP), State Duma Deputy Sergei Gavrilov, having arrived to hang out in the Orthodox Church in Georgia, found himself in the chair of the Georgian Parliament, where he was seated by the receiving party.

    This angered Sakhashvili’s “Georgian nationalists” and they went to the storming of the Parliament, which is continuing even now with varying success, despite the fact that Sergei Gavrilov has long flown to Russia.

    Such a get-together turned out to be, and I will not describe to you all that the media reported about it, but instead the story told by the agents of the theory of world projects in Georgia, that homosexuals decided to hold a pride parade a week before this get-together in Tbilisi, and Georgia is such a country where the protests against such parades and even light patting of the participants in these parades with kitchen stools became the calling cards of the Georgian Orthodox and even the Georgian Church.

    And all this week, the liberal intelligentsia has shamed Georgians for their support of “Orthodox fascists”, and now it has become clear that Orthodoxy is the long hand of Moscow.

    In general, again, the Crypto-Religious War of the Roses, when the war for power on earth hides a war for the souls of people in Heaven.

    2. Donald Trump yesterday ordered to bomb Iran, and canceled it at the last moment, but it became known only today, and yesterday the chairman of the Senate Judicial Commission, Lindsey Graham, who, after Israel had declared Truman a Messiah, played a crucial role in the Big Bargain and Trump’s victory over internal enemies, gave an interview where he said that if next week Iran begins to enrich uranium and reaches the finish line for the atomic bomb, Israel will bomb it, and the US will not interfere with it, or even help if it is necessary to refuel over Iraq or at one of the airfields in close proximity to Iran.

    And this is also the War of the Roses, since the meta-historical concept of the “Shield of Israel” became the basis of the union of Episcopal and other clones of Anglicanism in American politics.

    3. It became known about the preparation of a meeting between Zelensky and Putin in Japan, which is taking place against the backdrop of a new scandal in the United States around Yanukovych’s granary book, which Poroshenko passed on to the Hillary Flying Bats to Trump’s enemies in the United States, almost sending him and his son to prison.     And taking into account the notorious Tomos to Ukrainian Orthodox Church, this is the World War of Roses in a chemically pure form.

    The whole “40 Acres and a Mule” Thang came from General Sherman during his March through Georgia. It’s basically what the “Freedmen” wanted, and General Sherman thought that giving the “Freed” slaves land would alleviate the burden on Sherman’s army which had to provide for the “Freed” slaves following and encumbering Sherman’s army. Basically, the “Freedman” wanted to be subsistence farmers and to generally be idle except for forcing the black women to grow only enough corn and sweet potatoes to eat so that the men can generally fuck around all day. The Yankees, of course, wouldn’t have any of that since for the Yankee productivity and profits are everything. So the focus was on making the “Freedmen” wage laborers and putting them back to work to pick even more cotton faster than before. Go figure….

          Each generation wants what the previous one had, especially with indulged parents. The problem is they want it right away, while the parents are 20-30 years down the road in spending power. So they buy everything anyway and put it on the card. The student debt is not the only debt the newer generations have accumulated.

          The real problem is instant gratification, the need to have everything now, not earning your way over time. Each generation needs more debt.

          The Feds are not the only folks with a humongous debt problem.

    The wide latitude and reverence we give towards the complete craziness of religion is the foundation for all the insanity that follows, but we ignore it, no, we celebrate it, at least in the USA. Freedom of religion is freedom to be insane. To believe, think, act, educate, and feel as one chooses. The literal manifestation of fiction. Writ large.
    Most ignore this mass-insanity although they know better, because they believe it to be respectful. And to be respectful is next to godliness.

    Craziness is also born from our knowledge of our transience as a living being and as a species on a planet that does not offer eternity to either. Humanity, as every species, is a point in time, on an ever evolving trajectory. Not a finalized end product, nor a desirable one.
    We know this, yet we act as though we want the planet to know otherwise. It may not want to continue with us, so we will end it with us. The collective lunacy it takes to ignore the fact that vast amounts of humans are destroying the planet on so many levels from mass extinction, mass pollution, and climate, yes, humanity has irreversibly altered our climate is a base psychological phenomenon that continues to be ignored.

    Yet it is crazy. So why is anyone surprised by mass hysteria and intellectual dishonesty, particularly in a place that celebrates every counterintuitive behavior imaginable?

    Is it because, deep down in the reptilian we know that trusting our intuition is crazy? Or is it the more likely: suppressing our instincts, our thoughts, our intuition brought us a synthetic world with insanity materialized?

    The fight against Hillary Clinton and the nuclear war for the United States is a tactic, but forcing Iran to recognize Israel is a strategy, it is not just ripples on the water, it is the deepest currents of world politics.

    I call the topic of US relations with Iran “deep” because Iran represents at least two world religions: Islam and Zoroastrianism. And the United States was founded by Freemasons, who are distant descendants of Zoroastrians. Comments are superfluous. I note only that everything that the media and most of commenters here say on this topic is simply not true.

    To begin with, the book of Esther does not tell about the conflict between the Aryans and the Jews, it tells about the providential, age-old friendship of religious Jews with Aryans (Zoroastrians) against the common enemy – Amalek (Satanist) Haman.

    And this is written openly in the Bible, including that the first Messiah (savior of the Jewish people) was the great leader of the Aryans – Persian (Iranian) Tsar Cyrus the Great, a Zoroastrian by religious affiliation. As you can see, everything is exactly the opposite and one can only regret too many people are writing on this topic without having read the Book of Esther.

    And such examples of erroneous information, which is essentially an informational virus, are dime a dozen.

    Secondly, this question is strategic because now in the world the rise of the religious and I would even say apocalyptic consciousness takes place everywhere, including in the USA and this particular blog is a confirmation of that.

    And among those forces that supported Trump in the elections and brought him to the White House, perhaps the most significant role is played by the so-called Evangelical Christians, for whom the concept “Shield of Israel” plays a huge role.

    According to this concept, the United States is doomed to victory in the final battle of the military forces of Good and Evil (Armageddon) precisely in this capacity of the “Shield of Israel”. Moreover, if we recall that Hillary Clinton made Donald Trump participate in the elections as a spoiler, in this matter, to evangelical Christians should be added to so-called neocons, which with a high degree of accuracy can be considered to be Bastinda’s Flying Monkeys.

    But there is one subtlety – an understanding of the very concept of the “Shield of Israel” among evangelical Christians and Neocons, I would say the opposite and goes back centuries, almost to the times of Esther, Mordecai, Artaxerxes and Haman.

    But in closer times, Russia could fully feel this difference in the 1980s-1990s. The fact is that in the 80s the US President Ronald Reagan declared the USSR the Evil Empire (to the concept with which he allegedly won in the Cold War and “ruined the USSR” ) at a meeting of evangelical Christians, but the Neocon leader Hillary Clinton took advantage of this victory and arranged the damned 90s in Russia.

    This difference in the attitude of neocons and evangelical Christians to the very concept of “Shield of Israel”, as well as to both Testaments, Hillary Clinton demonstrated forcing victorious Israel to withdraw its troops from Lebanon, betraying its allies Maronite Christians and concluding the “Land for Peace” Agreement in Oslo, peace which Israel is still waiting for, and, having given the land back, almost died in 2006 in Lebanon, when had to face Hezbollah supported by Iran.

    Well, with Evangelical Christians, Hillary Clinton entered into a fundamental conflict when, during the election campaign of 2016, she declared that after becoming president, she would force all churches in the United States to comply with US laws prohibiting homosexual discrimination, including their right to marry in evangelical churches.

    I understand that in Russia a lot of people would have looked with pleasure as evangelical Christians who supported Reagan and his war against the “Empire of Evil”, Hillary Clinton makes pray in churches where homosexuals were wed, but let me say that such gloating is contrary to Christianity.

    That is why it is fundamentally important for President Trump to contribute to the restoration of the original concept of the “Shield of Israel”, especially considering that this is the right time to put pressure on Iran, which not only repeatedly denied Israel’s right to exist, but also threatened to specifically destroy it, presumably with a nuclear bomb.

    Meanwhile, Iran’s refusal to build a nuclear bomb is the essence of that agreement concluded by Iran with the United States. Unfortunately, Hillary Clinton had a hand in this agreement, and Israel has already been stung by her politics in Oslo, Lebanon and Israel itself, and is ready to launch a preemptive strike on Iran on its own, without any Shield, which means the collapse of the very concept that brought the United States victory in the Cold War (in the eyes of the global West of course)

      Given that all the Democrats do is TALK about their voting constituencies like Blacks and Hispanics without doing anything to improve their material condition but rather the opposite, then it’s reasonable to expect that the politics would change.

      Hence the goodie-bag. But since the goodies would come at somebody’s expense, ie wealthy white voters that are all for affirmative measures as long as they don’t have to pay and as long as Blacks and Hispanics don’t sully their neighborhoods and schools with their presence, I expect that somehow the goodie-bag legislation gets inexplicably bogged with its sponsors blaming Republicans for their intransigence or maybe the devilry in the details when the enormity of the cost becomes apparent.

      But let’s suppose it passes through the congressional hoops and surmounts Presidential vetoes. What of other interested parties? One of our commenters said that one of the Gettysburg war graves has his family name on it. So what of the families descended from the hundreds of thousands dead and wounded in the 1861-1865 dust-up? What about them?

      And what about the Indians? They got screwed out of a whole continent. What about reparations for them? And if you do that for American Blacks and maybe Indians, what about the millions in South America descended from slaves and Indians? Shouldn’t it be the successors to Muslim slave traders and Black African tribes that captured these slaves having to cough up also?

      Hell, it’s a good bet my own distant ancestors were slaves on Roman estates. Or maybe medieval estates. Serfdom was maybe better than slavery but by how much? Not by much I’ll wager. So do I get reparations? Do you?

    It’s really hard to characterize AOC’s nonsense on concentration camps as anything other than nonsense. And to add to the hilarity we have someone giving lectures from a country with de-facto apartheid with respect to its own indigenous population.

    Now I don’t think I’m exaggerating when I say that the acts committed in the colonization of North America – especially given the magnitude of the heist – are on a par with the outrages of WW2 so it would behoove the commenter in question to maybe reflect on the sins of his own people and to think twice before pointing the finger so he doesn’t draw attention to the goings-on in his own country. The third-world conditions in those northern Bantustans gives the lie to the absurd conceit about his country’s fairness and fluffery about compassion. You can’t call what goes on up there momentary lapses in judgment, these aren’t “mistakes” as in 1+1 = 3, these aren’t acts buried in the deep dark past, these are on-going matters of government policy in place for generations encompassing and ruining the lives of millions of people.

    OK, life has got many absurdities, pots calling kettles black being one. But the point this commenter raised applies to the USA. There’s a lot of talk about racism on both sides of the border but how much of it relates to American Indians? Not to put too fine a point on it, but they got fucked, not to mention massacred. And then ignored. Yeah, blacks were enslaved, they were pissed on and abused and even enslaved even after the supposed emancipation. But what about the Indians? Hardly a peep. Maybe AOC and the towering intellects on the enlightened Left could give them a thought or two. Maybe a shout-out. How much time can you after all spend on twisting history for the purpose of self-aggrandizement?

    Now say the word “history” and it draws groans, facts being such tiresome things, especially among the younger set and especially because history is seen to be bunk. It isn’t. Pearl got bombed, Imperial Japan killed millions in Asia, Germany exterminated European Jewry and Russia and its subject peoples lost more than 20 million. Those lives lost are facts. But it’s like Stalin said, a death is a tragedy, a million is a statistic.

    So maybe pull it down to a personal level. I had a relative, now deceased, that spent time as an inmate in one of those camps during WW2 that AOC refers to, where millions died. He survived but barely, forced to work as slave-labor, coming out of it a tottering bag of bones. It’s like Solzhenitsyn said, you survive those places by doing a lot of little things that in the end add up to living as opposed to dying, an extra spoonful of soup, properly drying out your socks at the end of the day, things like that. Or, in my own relative’s case, eating potato peels and other discards that in normal times would be considered garbage. That was the margin between life and death for him. He made it out but it ruined him physically and scarred him mentally. He was a cheerful and robust young man going into the war but coming out he was ill and debilitated and bad-tempered and his wife threatened to leave him and take the kids. It wrecked his life in other words and his family life too.

    So when idiots like AOC equate detention facilities for illegal immigrants with the worst outrages of Nazi-ism it offends one’s intelligence, and sense of propriety, and it makes you wonder how such a charlatan and liar made into national politics. Maybe because of those qualities? Maybe because her followers are so uninformed, in which case it’s a discredit to the American educational system. But that’s another discussion. And I have got no patience for people that defend such spectacularly stupid assertions as AOC’s.

    I don’t think there’s a cure for stupidity, you can maybe control its spread like you control cockroaches or bed-bugs. So thanks to those that spoke up; Beryl, BackRowHeckler, Nightowl, Montsegur, and Janos. In most cases we let stupidity pass but in some cases by its nature it’s so corrosive that it can’t be allowed to. It does no credit to people who may THINK they’re being cool and hip and provocative or maybe even think they have a leg up intellectually. It’s like Albright raising the specter of Nazi-ism in reference to the election of Trump. It’s a gross distortion of reason, and you question the sanity of such a person.

      There is a cure for America’s stupidification. Get the Deep State the hell out of the education system. Teach the three R’s the old style way. Educate the kids with history and civics so they understand what they are voting for as adults. Starting now will help in twenty years or so.

      It is too late for the millennials and Gen-z folks. Stupid is the name of the game and the Dems will get most of the ballot advantage from these two generations, Dems=stupid right now.

      If Trump wins a second term with some conservative support, the possibility exists that stupidification can be reversed. If not, watch the US keep sliding on the education ranks globally.

      This site reminds me in one way of Wikipedia. The articles on the English-language Wikipedia are constantly being edited to push various agendas — commercial, religious, political … you name it.

      The comments section here, in part, reflects the same kind of edits. Comments presented as the viewpoints of individuals are too often agenda-driven messaging for some group, be they political activists, pushers of various faiths, and probably even governments.

      It is too bad the well of public discussion is poisoned by such schemes, but it has been so since the web emerged. Perhaps the only difference today is that the noise level of provocateurs and trolls has risen in amplitude. Could it be the decline of traditional media has sparked open conflict to control the narrative?

      There is still plenty of good conversation and exchange of views to be had on the ‘net, but much of the “discussion” is a wasteland strewn with booby traps.

        The trick is to sniff out bona fide commenters from “the rest”. “The rest” consistently use bags of tricks that you learn over time. And you develop a sense of smell as to who’s genuine and who’s not.

        The internet gave propagandists, government employed or otherwise, a platform to disseminate misinformation. So, two problems with it: it’s run by profit-driven organizations and those same organizations have got governments in their pockets. Even if governments set up a regulatory apparatus, the regulators sooner or later get bought and sold in the process of regulatory capture such as we’ve seen with Wall Street.

        And it enabled surveillance. The Deep State, not only of the US but also other countries, works hand-in-hand with the corporate world to defend their mutual interests. It’s hard not to think of Big Brother.

        Watch what comes out of China in respect of their Social Credit System. This is going to be irresistible for the US Deep State and American campus busy-bodies. Watch for a version of it on this side of the pond. There was never a narrative that governments didn’t feel compelled to control. How do you control it? You set up software to evaluate on-line utterances and a system of consequences that result from the evaluations.

Now beloved Mayor Pedro is caught between backing his own police force and the ‘Woke’ philosophy he is running on. Its a problem.       The second Iraq war began in a situation very similar to today’s, or rather the same, but much worse.

      Let me remind you that at that time President Clinton threatened Russia for the second Chechen war in terms of similar threats against Milosevic for attempting to establish Constitutional order in Kosovo.

      And President Yeltsin, sitting in China in the office of the Chinese Prime Minister, in response, reminded him of the presence of Russia’s nuclear triad. Only the Russian Strategic Missile Forces, as well as all the other components of the nuclear triad, were then in a much worse condition than they are now, and the Clintons, in response to these threats, without thinking twice, sanctioned the arrest in New York of the head of the Union State of Russia and Belarus Borodin who came to the inauguration of President-elect George W. Bush!!!!!

      And between these two events, the “Kursk” nuclear submarine “sank”.

      And I do not know why it sunk, but I know that the newly elected President Putin was reported then that it was sunk by two multi-purpose American submarines “Toledo” and “Memphis”.

      And in Sochi, the President of Russia sat with a finger on the red button, since it was unknown that this was an accident, a provocation or the beginning of an attack on Russia by superior forces of NATO. A few days later, President Clinton hastily gave Russia one hundred forty million dollars, ostensibly for dismantling other submarines.

      And in this situation, President Bush took advantage of the September 11 terrorist attack not only to deal with the “villain” who threatened to kill his father, but also to divert many overly aggressive American military away from Russia into Iraq.

      And even from the point of view of international laws, US President Bush had every right to crack down on Saddam Hussein, since peace was not concluded after the first Iraq war, and the cease-fire was stipulated by many conditions that Saddam Hussein constantly violated.

        I do not understand the perpetual “hope” in DC that a miracle is going to happen and these ME Islamic countries are going to see the error of their ways and capitulate to the “common sense” of the USA and the west. It will not happen.

        Look at the John Kelly peace treaty that was negotiated. It was a crock from its inception. They agreed to postpone certain elements of Nuke development for ten years. In exchange, we gave them lots of money, and we did not even have the ability to check up on them for compliance. They take the money, fund terrorism, continue nuke development. What a great deal. As usual, our Dem led Deep State gave away everything for politics.

        During the last couple of weeks, Iran threatened to finish development of a Nuke in months or even weeks.

        Hmm! Does this sound like a group that have not been doing development. Trump was right on yanking us out of the deal. Obama and Kerry should be put in jail for doing the US dirt with that fiasco of a “deal”.

        These folks are fundamentalist Muslims. They read and believe in the Shia interpretation of the Quran, the rule of Jihad to turn the world to Islam. We are not going to change this, no matter what we offer them or threaten them.

        Trump’s Make Iran Great Again idea is as much an appeasement crock as Kerry’s giveaway. The only thing that is going to change the domestic and foreign policy of Iran is regime change with a secular government put in its place.

        Fat chance without war. And just like the US, half their population would support regime change and the other half is just as zealous about their cause.

        By the way, every power structure needs a scapegoat to blame all their foibles on. For Iran’s Imams, it is the same scapegoat as the rest of the world uses, the Jews of Israel.

    Why Trump is Red, and Hillary Clinton is Black

    Sunday political programs will begin soon and it is unlikely that the main topic will be Trump’s announcement about the start of his election campaign. It’s a pity, but there is no bad without good, and I want to take this opportunity to show that in the age of the Internet, I on my Island can understand the intricacies of American politics thanks to theory of World Projects.

    I want to take this opportunity to fulfill the promise made a few days ago in a “Brief Summary of Military Operations on the North American Front of the War of the Roses after Appointment of John Durham” to explain why I consider the war party in the USA to be a Black World Project and Trump’s American nationalism to be Red.

    Well, I cannot fully explain in this post why I wanted to talk about the link between China and Harlem in New York, because I can only talk about this as an artistic truth in the continuation of the post about San Marino and books on Christian Art, but I can say tentatively that the headquarters of the Black World Project was in Harlem, where the so-called Clinton City sprang up around 125 Street Clinton’s office, strategic management of capitalist China development was carried out from there under the wise leadership of the Chinese Communist Party.

    I understand that this sounds like an oxymoron, but in this case, I inform you, my dear readers, the artistic truth is like the Eskimos – “what I see, I sing about”.

    But first, let us return to the coming political programs in the United States, in which the beginning of Trump’s election campaign is unlikely to be the main topic. I think everything will be overshadowed by the failed US war with Iran, which is used not only to divert attention from just ended US and Russian war in cyberspace, but also from very important statements by Donald Trump at a rally in Orlando, Florida, where he stated that he is pushing his candidacy for a second term, and intends to make the question of Hillary Clinton one of the main themes of his election campaign.

    And the day before he gave an interview to George Stephanopoulos, whom many consider to be the main architect of the victory of Hillary – sorry Bill – Clinton in 1992, and in this interview, he allegedly said that the question of Hillary Clinton was actually a question of relations with Russia. And apparently, after two hours in America, of course they will cover that, but somehow in passing – this is already evident from the news from the Russian media, which receive instructions from the same center as the American.

    Meanwhile, the first pre-election rally of Trump hit the American media with President Trump’s focus on Hillary Clinton and a couple of days ago it was visible to the naked eye, because right after the democratic media in the US stopped serving the global coup d’etat on May 5 and began the normal political propaganda of the election campaign, the main evidence of the inevitable loss of Trump in 2020 was that Hillary Clinton is not participating in this election campaign, and can not be the main factor mobilizing Trump voters, as it happened in 2016.

    And Trump said that he could and would, but as you understand these words at the first rally of the election campaign, are not emotional, but programmatic statements, and they confirm what I have been saying for a long time – Trump and Hillary personify two world projects that are fighting for life and death for power over the world, and not just over Washington and the USA.

    And over Russia, by the way, too, moreover, as the “direct line with Putin” showed, in Russia there is a revolutionary situation, very reminiscent of February 1917, when Russia collapsed into a Black World Project, from which it was pulled out by the Red.

    But everyone continues to pretend that there was no February.

    And all this is happening to the accompaniment of a choir that plays “Moscow – Beijing, Moscow – Beijing, friendship forever” notwithstanding the fact that four years after the first performance of this song, when China saw the Black General Secretary Khrushchev and got acquainted with the materials of the XX Congress of CPSU, it began negotiations with Black America on a union against the blackening USSR.

    But as Madonna just sang in Israel, “not all will get into the future, because not everyone learns from the past”.

    The fact of the matter is that it was then that the process of Clintonisation of the planet began, although Hillary then still marched under the table, but plans to use Chinese labor to bring to their knees not only historic Russia, but also American WASPs, who for some reasons decided that they were shareholders of the corporation “USA”, were already in the making!

    As I explained before, Black and White world projects consider the working class as people of the second or even third grade, but only the Black World project rejects their right to live and they have to prove their right to exist competing with each other for salary and benefits, and those who failed to win this competition must die as dogs as not fit into the market.

    This principle was applied in the 90s not only to Russia, but also to the United States, when Clinton began to withdraw the US industry to China in order to put in place the boorish rednecks, who imagined that they made a valuable contribution to the victory of the United States in the Cold War and are also winners deserving their share.

    Visible part of this spiritual iceberg was the “End of History” of Fukuyama, but life showed that, along with the American working class, to which belong American “thinking class”, the whole of the United States flew into the abyss as a country.

    The year 2008 refuted Blacks in the United States, who believed then and believe now that it was not the working class that creates values, but perfecti that gave profane work, without which these profane would simply die like dogs.

    And Trump personifies the Red America, which believes that the American working class is the main America, and those who take American factories to China are stinking bitches, pests and the enemies of the people.

    And if the enemies of the American people do not have accounting books in America, where $15 per hour is the minimum wage, then the State should protect the American working class from the competition with cheap Chinese labor with import duties on products manufactured by American companies in China.

          I think you’re missing the point, brh, but you know that.

          I worked (and still work freelance) for a publishing company that has its typesetting done in Malaysia and its printing done in China.

          There were 70 people working in the Edinburgh office when I started in 1998 (many more before that) and now there are six, excluding me, because I took voluntary redundancy when they imposed redundancy on 7 or 8 or my colleagues (one got to keep her job because I effectively gave her mine, and it suited both of us at that time). Many of the jobs had previously gone to Chennai, but those particular redundancies were made so that our salaries could be used to develop ‘e-product’ in the US!!! Yep, it was St Louis and Philadephia that benefited from that bit of global management.

          I’m perfectly familiar with the way these things operate.

          But there are two relevant points here:

          (1) Nobody told my company to send production abroad. They did it because someone else did it first and margins in medical book publishing are tight, students not being rich. If they hadn’t, then the publishing staff and production management staff (still mostly in the UK) wouldn’t have had jobs either because the business would have had to shut down if it had continued to do its own typesetting (they did some until around 2000) and had its printing done in the UK.

          I’m not arguing for the model – I don’t like it – I’m just saying once one company in the business sector does it they have a competitive advantage and you either follow suit or you go out of business and lose even the jobs you could still retain at home.

          (2) And more relevant to your point, brh, the CEO of the firm I worked for didn’t stand for president or leader of a political party on a platform criticising globalism. Because that would have made him a hypocrite.

          If Trump had ‘fessed up while he was campaigning and said he regretted that the global model had contributed to his fortune, that would have been more…er interesting.

        Two things contributed to the movement of production out of he USA and probably Scotland too.

        1. The cost of labor. The vaunted middle class manufacturing jobs were very expensive, primarily due to union pay elevations through many years.

        2. The cost of corporate taxation. Before Trump’s tax cut, I believe the tax rate was 37%. Ireland’s for example was 11%. Trump’s reduction, I believe was to 15%. The exodus slowed and with tariffs now to balance the trade deficit, manufacturing is starting up again.

        We need to decide if we are to be a legitimate manufacturing country.

          Absolutely, JohnAZ, re (1) anyway. Publishing is well known for not being very well paid, but it wouldn’t matter if if you paid people even less. They can’t compete with people in Chennai or Kuala Lumpur

          I’m not sure how much the corporate tax issue contributed.

          My daughter worked in corporate tax for one of the Big Four while she was in the UK.

          Ireland has been in trouble with the EU because it has used corporate tax cuts to undercut other EU countries. I don’t know if it’s still getting away with it.

          With global companies one of the biggest problems is getting them to pay any tax at all in the countries where they make their profits. They benefit from our infrastructure but they don’t want to help pay for it.

          But the thing is you can’t have it both ways. if you’re going to pay car workers twice what they get in Mexico you’re going to have much more expensive cars and fewer people in your country are going to be able to afford them. I don’t know what the answer is to that one.

          As for ‘See ya in 2020’, I hope you don’t think I’m batting for either team. I’ve said on here multiple times that I hope your man gets in again in 2020, just as I said I didn’t want to see him impeached.

          When you start a course of antibiotics you have to finish it. No point coming back and moaning at the doctor. The last thing most people want to see is piles of books in the shops titled ‘What I could have achieved if they hadn’t sabotaged my second term’. ‘They’ being ‘the media’, ‘the illegal voters’, the ‘dead voters’. Anybody really.

          The ‘cost of labor’ wasn’t really in the equation until the Iron Curtain fell and a huge body of cheap skilled labor from Eastern Europe became available after 45 years of communism.

          At the same time, China made a conscious decision to expand its manufacturing capacity with a view to vacuuming up almost all the world’s low-end manufacturing (and later it’s high-end as well).

          So, it was a matter of numbers – the constraints on labor prior to these two events are what allowed the high-cost unionized market to thrive for so long – you can’t blame the unions!

          And unsurprisingly, along with this cheap labor market, the unions have been emasculated too.

      How are you doing? The weather here in the Boston area was perfect today, maybe the best all year. I spent the afternoon lounging around the pool relaxing. Life is good – for today at least.

      Nah, you didn’t see me in line at Encore because I didn’t go. You’d have to be crazy to get in line with over 50k people, wait for two hours, and once in, try to find a space at a table. I will get there as soon as the hullabaloo dies down. I’ll report on my impressions, but that might be in several weeks, who knows.

      I’m going to Foxwoods on August 21 and 22. We could meet for a drink or two somewhere in Eastern CT. or even at the casino.

      I’ll always answer your posts to me as soon as I read them, which might not be the same day.

I see in them the history of colonization, slavery and mass incarceration that makes their begging Black people for money ironic—if not insulting. You wasted your whiteness! Why should we give to you? Others see that same history, but for them, he is a chance to be MLK’s dream.
    Here is a descendant of murderers who killed our ancestors now begging us to save their life. So let’s turn the other cheek! But it’s not always honest. It is the trick of internalized racism that Black anger is transformed into showy altruism to show the “white gaze” that we’re safe—good Negroes. So we aren’t attacked by more powerful whites—instead rewarded by them.
    I saw an older Caribbean woman, devoutly Christian place a container of jerk chicken at his feet. Holy light radiated from her. It was a public lesson to us all, that we shouldn’t let racism poison our souls with hate. “God bless you,” she intoned loudly as if performing Shakespeare in the park. Yet I saw this same Jesus freak walk by a legless brother pushing his wheelchair through traffic, asking for change and she did not even bat an eyelash. He wasn’t worthy. But the white boy is. She saw her best self reflected in his whiteness. She saw her beautiful white soul, doing a white God’s work, on the mirror of white flesh.
    Sometimes folks see that same history and want to get even. I saw three brothers run up and spit on him as people cackled at the white boy who wiped sticky gobs from his eyelids. The laughter was cruel, joyful and belly deep. They might as well shook slave chains in his face and said, “Now you get to wear these nigga!”
    All these thoughts crashed in my head as I got on the subway. “Help,” a cracked plea jabbed at the quiet. “Help me get something to eat,” a legless Nuyorican pushed his wheelchair between train riders studying their cellphones. Jesus, I thought, did all the homeless get their legs cut off? “Help me,” he asked and no one answered. I saw in his face the African, Native and European bloodlines spilled by war and rape. Just like mine. “Help me get food,” he asked the next rider and the next. I’ve known Nuyoricans like him my whole life, homeless or shooting heroin in doorways and like an x-ray, saw the history of violence and oppression that created their destruction. I just barely dodged it myself because of a fraught class privilege.
    I hear “help” and see the Nuyorican in the wheelchair, or the endless parade of Black men or women holding out crusted hands for pennies. I smell their death. I hear their voices scraped on sidewalks and long nights in the cold. I see their scabbed skin, or gaunt thin lips, or yellow liquored eyes. I retreat inside myself, waiting until they pass like an image rounding the surface of a soap bubble.
    But when a white person begs, maybe a white woman breastfeeding or a young white boy whining like a broken flute, I feel better. Good. It’s not just us. I feel happy. I feel like the scales of justice could shift.
    The other day I jogged up the subway stairs and saw the homeless white boy again. “Can you get me something to eat,” he barked out to the river of people passing by. “Someone stole all my shit!” Scabs covered his mouth. He was sunburnt and thin. I ignored him but thought “Baby, you stole all mine.” I glanced at his blanket, shopping cart and books. Who is he? Why is he here? Where are his people?
    I stopped myself. It’s the Martin Luther King Jr. life-coach again, saying, “Love your enemies! Get to know them as people.” No Dr. King! Today I own my anger. I want to snatch his food and say, “Go beg in a white neighborhood!” And eat it. And rub my belly. And laugh.
    I smile. The cruelty cures my internalized racism that forces me to empathize with him—so I can be patted on the head like a good peaceful protester. All my white editors want me to write that way. All the white institutions that pay me want me to feel that way. But I don’t—and saying I don’t is freeing. It pulls the unconscious whiteness out of my brain. I don’t need to see my best or worst self reflected on his skin.
    As I walk away, a white man in tailored clothes and exfoliated skin talked to the homeless white boy. His face is a mix of fear and disgust, race loyalty and pity. He’s doing what I did, confronting history.
    How do I know? The fear in his tight mouth is disgust. The fear in his eyes is forced and unwanted racial empathy. He’s worried, like many whites are, that as they become the minority, fewer and fewer places will exist where they have power. They worry that at some point the roles will be reversed and they will have to beg for food. He looked at the homeless white boy and saw a hungry ghost, seemingly expelled from some alternate dimension where Europeans are enslaved, segregated and mass incarcerated. He sees the fall of America.
    Neither of us ask the kid’s name. We don’t need to. His name is ink-blot. His name is Rorschach. It’s whatever we see in the dark shapes that sleep on the street or pass by us on the train. That occasionally reaches out to us and says, “Help.”

    Beloved Mayor Pete is catching hell at a town hall meeting over the police shooting of a citizen in his city, South Bend, Indiana. He’s issuing apologies and grovelling, but the crowd ain’t buying it. Sometimes being ‘Woke’ is not enough, you gotta walk the walk, not just talk the talk. The crowd was particularly galled that mayor Pete is never in town, but “in South Carolina telling people all lives matter”.

    Mayor Pete got trouble. As of right now he has most likely lost the black vote, the gay vote (just 2.5% but a source of plenty of cash) is a lock, and the Hispanic vote a definite maybe if he declares South Bend a ‘Sanctuary City’ and changes his name to Pedro, like Beto did. In fact I can see a Pedro — Beto ticket. It has a nice ring to it, albeit a little to white.

          Seriously though, my son admits that his adoption of Thom IS an affectation. When in college he had 2 close friends named Thomas and each happened to go by Thom. My Tom being a typical teenager felt that every Tom, Dick and Harry’s name is Jon, etc etc and so to add a little panache he took on the revised spelling so he and his two buds became the 3 Thoms.

          If you’re bothered by that h in the name remember that famous river in England, the Tems.

      Thus, while a stunning majority of Scots voted “Remain” (62/38), they were dicked over anyway, thanks to the Acts of Union 1707.

      The decision was made not long before the Scottish Referendum by the Queen’s Privy Council of the United Kingdom, when it became clear that the Clintonoids (ODESSA) have nothing against the two countries that defeated Nazi Germany – USA and Russia -annihilating each other and intend to experimentally verify that Putin has not only the button, but also a finger (will to push it).

        You obviously missed that the impetus for Indyref1 came from the Scottish National Party in Scotland, not from England. Just as the impetus for Indyref2 is coming from them.

        The people who started Brexit were Daniel Hannan, Liam Fox, Jacob Rees-Mogg, John Redwood and a number of hangers on from the Tory party. The Queen doesn’t get a say in these matters, although she does get to choose her hats.

        You will have seen that Boris has got himself into another fine mess. His minders have tried to keep him away from TV cameras – with the understanding that only Boris can lose the election for Boris – even to the point of having the other candidates take part in a televised debate where only an empty lectern stood in for Boris (I’m not sure if the lectern would have said anything less sensible).

        And after all that effort the police are called to a ‘domestic’ between him and his latest squeeze at her flat. Seems some of the magic has gone, but I’m guessing the Tory membership in the shires, like their representatives in the House, can be relied on to put party before country anyway.

    The non-Trump votes were 9 million. Trump lost the popular vote because 9 million voted for candidates other than Trump, including Jill Stein, Gary Johnson, etc. Hillary all by herself beat Trump by 3 million votes.
