It’s a pleasure to welcome back Piero San Giorgio who came on the podcast some time ago to talk about his previous excellent book, Survive the Economic Collapse, a Practical Guide. I caught up with Piero on Skype at his home in Switzerland to talk about his new book, Women on the Verge of a Societal Breakdown — Preserving Hard-won Victories During an Age of Uncertainty, published by the Club Orlov Press — and yes, that’s our chum Dmitry Orlov, author of many splendid books on the subject of how we’re going to meet-and-greet the future.
You can find Piero’s new book on Amazon. (Or you could order it from your independent bookseller.)
Yeah, I can hear some of you muttering — the effrontery!  The impertinence! Two dudes talking about… women! Well, There’s no law against it, at least not yet, and we’re gonna give it a shot. Let us know if you think it was a fair discussion.

Regarding the “trope” that women don’t get along with each other, Schopenhauer’s essay on women indicates this is not a recent or esoteric observation.

    • MargfromTassie February 24, 2017 at 7:11 pm #

Looking at Schopenhauer’s writings on women, he’s in the same category, imo, as that other idiot Freud who wrote about penis envy. Both egoistic, chauvinistic mysogynists! Do men suffer from clitoris envy?
Anyone that reads this will agree re Schopenhauer.
That’s the trouble with so much of the social ‘sciences’ – personal biases are at play everywhere, not just in some places as in the pure sciences.
Jim, re that trope – It is a MYTH. Just as in men, there may be a stage when some younger women compete with other young women for partners. But ‘women’ are just not young pre marriageable women. My experience of life, and I see it everywhere, is that, other women make the best friends women can have. This is because they communicate in the same way. They share confidences and concerns and they self disclose. They just connect, communication wise, in a much better way than most males and females. And in a much better and open way than males and males, who rarely look each other in the eyes. Women everywhere are engaged in clubs and organisations and enjoying each other’s company daily. Not just in craft and cooking clubs, but also in sporting clubs, bookclubs, mother’s clubs, travel clubs, probus and garden groups. Certainly in my area, women are always getting together for lunches and coffees – especially those who are retired and there is usually much laughter. But, who knows, maybe that’s not the case in other cultures? I am in Australia.

“Do men suffer from clitoris envy?”

Men spend zero time wondering what its like to have a vagina; but women do spend time wondering what its like to have a penis.

        • bibliomaniac April 27, 2017 at 3:50 pm #

thwack–I think you are confusing the appendage with the opportunities. Women do not want penises–all they want is the opportunities that men have by virtue of being men.

          Penis envy is a projection.

I’m french, In a youtube video, in french, San Giorgio said :

“we save the sick and the handicaped…it gives good conscience
but that is the way you destroy a civilisation”

Only a sample of neo-social-darwinism junk he often advocates.

Does this kind of man really show the way to go?
San Giorgio is a sloppy thinker, associated here in France with an even more dubious thinker and polemist Alain Soral.
In the end, you can’t find San Giorgio reasonable, or even rational.
For those following Kunstler, whom i usually find reasonable by the way, who are not some kind of reactionaries, just remember, despite the smart facade, San Giorgio is just a far-right warrior.
so so so interested in “SURVIVING”.
What are you prepared to do to “survive” San Giorgio?
Why is it so important that you or your bunch “survives”?

Well, has someone said : “in the long run we are all dead”

But may be it bothers nobody here…
Sorry for the rant if that’s the case.

I found the discussion very interesting; but I want to suggest social media like Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram… functions as a type of “hidden porn” for women and girls; and it has the same corrosive effect as “regular” porn has on men and boys.

    Think about it?

In the recent past geography limited the number of potential “suitors” a woman could expose herself to; even if she went to college.

Today, thanks to social media, an “average” woman can post a picture of herself and get hundreds or even thousands of compliments on her beauty, her face, her body… this results in an vastly inflated sense of self worth which causes her to reject “average” men and hold out for one equal in value to the sum total of all the cyber simps telling her how great she is online.

I say social media is porn for women because attention is an addictive drug for them, they can never get enough of it and many of them become addicts and eventually OD on it.

Understand, this is not meant to be a criticism of women. I strongly suspect the social media pimps knew this would happen and made it the foundation of their business model.

    Its just how women are.

    To sum up,

social media allows even an “average” woman to cast such a giant net that many of them cannot bring themselves to stop fishing for compliments

    *even if they get married*

and the older they get, the more bait they gotta cut, and now they only get bites from Thugfish and Lampreys…

Then as they age out, they get bitter and angry because they don’t have a man (or often any children) then comes the pills and alcohol…

    its very ugly and depressing.

Social media is porn for women.

    *be advised*

Gee thwack, like so many others talking about ‘women’, what type of women do you mix with/look at?? Why don’t you look more broadly?
“Women” in your view seem to be mainly about a category of younger women in the age range 15-mid – late 20’s, who are obsessed with their own appearance and self promotion, with clothes, jewellery etc etc (Mind you, Melania T could also fall into this category, as could so many ‘celebrity’ women pushed at us everywhere by the capitalist mass media)

There are many many women like myself, usually somewhat older and thus more ‘mature’, who dont bother with social media because they are at home or volunteering out in the community – looking after others. I only use FB to link to and spread the word re items of political, social, health or environmental interest, and also to help rehome abandoned pets. Maybe occasionally to keep in contact with overseas relatives or old friends.
Actually the whole discussion about men on the one hand and women on the other is just plain stupid – each sex, 3 + billion is just so diverse. It’s just part of the ‘dichotomous thinking’ disease – trying to simplify everything into black and white. An unfortunate tendency of human beings. And intellectually beneath Jim Kuntsler.
Thwack – you really need to focus on and mix with a broader range of women (and men) – join an environmental, sustainability or political group perhaps?

      • thwack February 25, 2017 at 7:20 pm #

Like I said before Marg, I ain’t mad at women for being women; after all, thats what they are.

What annoys me is all the lies about women that trick men into thinking they are something they are NOT.

Thank you James for sharing an enlightening conversation with a very intelligent individual. Hopefully the ladies out there will not take any offense but will, rather, consider the fine points that Piero made in regards to all of us working toward common goals. I have already raised two daughters and am in the process of raising two more and the lessons of true beauty, concern for the future, and the value in conservation have been themes I have spent much time and effort on, so far with great success. I think if you search for the root of the problem that exists with men verses women and women verses themselves in our society today, I think you will find that marketing and media is the culprit in the promotion of lies, misdirection and bad behavior. “Hey if you want to be really beautiful, buy our crap”! Plus the concept of what real beauty truly is has been totally obliterated by the greedy media snake oil salesmen.

All of this has led to the misconception that the REAL men, those who you want to make yourself beautiful for and breed with are the Lloyd Blankfeins and the Bill Clintons of the world not the Jerimiah Johnson, working type. What a shame and what a sham. And no, we cannot go back to 1963 because once they murdered JFK, they removed the possibility of ever achieving Camelot resulting in Walmartalot where we find ourselves today. Consume DAMN IT! Corporations are people too and require maximum profit at all cost, including all of us! Gotta love it. Thank you again for the respite that was achieve in your wonderful conversation, it brightened my day.

Another major difference between men and women is that men have to pay for their rights.

While women were given/handed these same rights for free (if you don’t count the bitching and moaning…)

Take voting for example. Men were not given the right to vote; they had to buy/earn it. Voting was part of a male social contract that had HUGE strings attached. Strings that said:

“at anytime or place of choice and for any reason…, the government can grab you and send you anywhere in the world to kill, die and fight… and you can’t get out of it.”

Arlington cemetery is full of men, boys, 17, 18, 19 years old who never got to vote, never got to drink a beer, never even got laided…

And thats only the most vulgar example of the phenomenon. This “contract” is still in force today even though many men don’t recognize it because they have been conditioned to accept their disposable status and lessor value than women.

When is the last time you saw a woman sleeping on a park bench in the dead of winter?

Women’s envy of “manworld” is based on their fantasy interpretation of authority without responsibility. Being male means living in a world of accountability; this is why women are way more skilled at “talking shit” than men. From a very early age boys learn there are certain things you should not say unless you are prepared to take a punch; that there are certain collections of words that end any and all NEGOTIATION…

    To sum up,

accountability is the reason men are “better” than women.

    I said it.

    * now bring the flames*

    • Walter B February 16, 2017 at 2:51 pm #

I would not agree that men are simply “better” than women, because each of us is better at different things. Men may be builders of societies, cities, civilizations, but we are also destroyers of the very same that we build. Women are better at providing future generations of humans and raising and nurturing those children. We have complementary roles to be sure. Most men may not be capable of leadership of the species, but there are certainly those that are. Women cannot honestly make that claim. Humanity is just like any other team. There are quarterbacks and there are kickers and the positions are not usually interchangeable. nor are the people that play them. We are certainly all part of a TEAM and if we do not learn how to play our position and how to handle the responsibilities that our position entails, then we will be the losers. We will fail. Personally I do not like failure.

    • MargfromTassie February 24, 2017 at 8:18 pm #

Men “have been conditioned to accept their disposable status and lessor value than women.”

Funny, but women of my age, over 60, have spent their lives feeling this way. But it wasn’t just a feeling. When I was a young woman, for example, you weren’t allowed to be a commercial pilot if you had the ‘wrong’ genitals and so many other things were discouraged. Single women didn’t get equal pay and couldn’t get bank loans. If women married, they had to give up their jobs in the Public Service and could only get a loan via their husbands. Women with children who wanted a career or worked full time (like men) were criticised as being unworthy parents, and often were refused employment anyway. Women who did not have children were criticised as being “selfish”. Once the children were off their hands, mothers could not start a new life or career, because “they had no experience” or had to look after their elderly parents. And there are SO many other actual examples of having a “lesser value”…

As for “men being better than women”, all the wars that ever were and most of the violence and rapes throughout history are the product of male testosterone. Most of the current sex trafficking, child slavery and pedophilia certainly is. Most of the cruelty to other species is.
But most important of all – the damage to and poisoning of our precious planet and the destruction of its biodiversity in the last couple of hundred years has been caused by male and testerone dominated, capitalist corporations and their unfettered greed.
      How’s that for ‘flames’ ?

      • thwack February 25, 2017 at 12:07 pm #

        How’s that for ‘flames’ ?

Pretty weak; I can’t even get this cigarette lit.

Marge, “manworld” may look like a play ground but its not; methinks thou doth protest too much. The limitation on female behavior is the price you pay for male investment in you, your children and civilization itself; you want to live in a mud hut covered in flies?

The large welfare state is a very recent phenomenon resulting from cheap energy. It will be the first and most immediate casualty of “The Long Emergency.” Daddy Government is not gonna be there to take care of all these single moms and their fuck trophies.

Don’t forget, this testosterone you criticize is also responsible for all that is true, good and beautiful in the world.

There is a reason why men have biographies and women have grandchildren.

  7. thwack February 17, 2017 at 2:48 pm #

To give an example of how brainwashed and cucked men are, I remember when the European “migrant crisis” started and how people were annoyed that the refugees were men?

The charge was often, hey look! “those aren’t refugees, those are fighting age males…” and then everybody piles on in the comment section with “yeah, WTF is that about?

    Why are they comin here?

    That dude don’t look sick?

    That dude don’t look starving?

Now this is in contrast to the treatment of female refugees who nobody questions?

Even the fat cannibal wet dream female refugees who don’t look like they miss no meals?

Why are males expected to STAY in harmful, abusive situations?

Why are we questioned if we try to save ourselves?

Matter of fact, its MALES who are in greatest danger during a civil war.

We are the main group being killed; and unlike females, males are not allowed to be “civilians”. And If you try to get all intellectual and decide you are gonna sit the war out as a pacifist, or some kind of hippie Buddhist… your own fucking people will kill you; matter of fact, your own women might do it? (that is, get some man to do it for them)

So please miss me with that “young men can’t be refugees” crap; they have the right to save themselves just like everybody else.

Finally, its perfectly rational and makes complete sense for young healthy males to lead the way during any major migration. What? you think women can do it?

File that under “shit that never happened.”

It was white men of fighting age that colonized the New World. Why?

Because white women could not do it.

Possession of a penis does NOT make you expendable or disposable and don’t ever let anybody tell you it does no matter how cryptic or shaming their language.

Be prepared to stand up for yourself, because ain’t nobody else is.

    *you have been warned*

    • MargfromTassie February 24, 2017 at 8:19 pm #

Yep, they all left their women folk at home to be bombed, raped or kiliied. ..

      • thwack February 25, 2017 at 12:16 pm #

These females will simply switch sides and support the winner of the war; its called hypergamy.

Women don’t want to win, they want a winner; same as it ever was…

        I ain’t mad at em.

  8. AHtheHumanity February 18, 2017 at 6:18 am #

What I focus on this discussion is the struggle to define what “great” and “survival(ist)” means in the grander context. Georgio was able to cover a lot of ground quickly in his insights into humanity but left a lot of holes that supposedly his book helps to fill in. From past discussions he leaves a lot up to the reader to conclude:

Should I leave my great corporate job to garden in costa rica in order to survive the eventual collapse of the gov’t and thus my companies protections?

Men and women can both master skill sets like being able to make delicious no bake bread in five minutes or communicate effectly to a variety of people. They both are employed in all operations of the cultivation of crops like wheat and rice. Men usually amp up the production in order to gain respect in a community by providing more and supporting more women (haram) and their children (irregardless of whose sperm produced them).

Bigger or greater is not always better. However, if you can employ people to clean your mansion then that raises their status of living as well. Kunstler explored this in his novel but left out a lot of details. You can only write about what you know, imagination is limited. Since very few people in the world have experienced how the other half live, a lot is made up. This goes for the differences in men and womens lives. Maybe you were the first son or daughter and were treated differently than your sibblings? Much of the human experience is driven by circumstances and not just sex…women have been queens, men have been slaves.

Everyone is persued by death, not just pricks. No one has been able to explain why people die. Even in paradise conditions in a rain forrest isolated frim modern stressors (taxes, wars) and chemical toxins, easily growing abundant varieties of foods and medicines, men and women grow old and die. So you can not survive indefinitely and you must live on through your progeny.

    • thwack February 18, 2017 at 6:10 pm #

“Since very few people in the world have experienced how the other half live, a lot is made up.”

Just not the parts that count.

This ain’t science fiction. Every behavior he discussed is going on somewhere in the world right now; a lot of it is going on in your own country.

Do you need to get car jacked and pistol whipped in order to understand it is not a fictional experience?

      • AHtheHumanity February 20, 2017 at 11:39 am #

Personally, and I might speak for a large number of people (whether or not these people come forward to support me in public is another matter entirely!), having sympathy for people and sometimes having empathy for people when it comes to getting car jacked and pistol whipped is not really what the books being promoted on this website are about.

I do not recall Georgio mentioning in the interview anything about physical violence or retaliation…

If this does start happening on a LARGE scale, the majority of the targeted audience being American, who would be committing these acts of violence and why? with what aim? how successful would it be?

        • thwack February 21, 2017 at 11:46 pm #

I do not recall Georgio mentioning in the interview anything about physical violence or retaliation…

Thats my point; he did mention keeping himself in good physical conditioning and fire arms training; you think he does that in order to better gaze at rainbows and swim with dolphins?

          So I ask you again:

Do you need to get car jacked and pistol whipped BEFORE you understand it is not a fictional experience?

          • AHtheHumanity February 22, 2017 at 11:36 am #

Good physical health and firearms training is good for more than just physical defense: hunting and farming.

Again, what would cause indiscriminate violence in your opinion?

          • thwack February 22, 2017 at 8:04 pm #

The same thing that always causes it; abuse and mistreatment.

            What country you from?

  9. Zoltar February 18, 2017 at 1:52 pm #

I find Mr. San Giorgio to be to be charming, humane, and wise, but certainly anticipate that women who might not be able to imagine surviving a week without a microwave oven would be unable to accept the idea that the world will foreseeably revert to circumstances in which they may be subjected to abduction and sexual slavery.

Most of us are still in denial about the small stuff. The big stuff takes real guts to contemplate – hence the value of this book.

    • MargfromTassie February 24, 2017 at 8:35 pm #

I have a 25 year old daughter. I will leave her a note in my will that when the SHTF and IF there’s then a world that reverts to abduction and sexual slavery for women, it might be preferable to self eliminate rather to remain in such a world. After all, given the loss of religious indoctrination against suicide (in the west) and the stash of available weapons and ammo (particularly in the US) it shouldn’t be too difficult.

      • thwack February 25, 2017 at 12:36 pm #

Historically, noble women have killed themselves instead of “switching sides” and cooperating with their new masters.

But this is also why there are so few noble women today.

Selection pressures mean traitorous whores always survive to pass their traitorous whore genes along to the next generation.

        Just sayin.

        • MargfromTassie March 5, 2017 at 8:31 am #

In a future World Made by Hand, there will also be the option for women stuck with cruel men to do them in, rather than themselves. After all, compared to the 1800’s, there will still be plenty of chemicals and old drugs around. And women do the cooking…..
And, in such a world, there will be few if any autopsies or forensic investigations.

  10. hladini February 19, 2017 at 10:50 am #

I enjoyed the podcast very much. Was impressed with the author’s rational, non-judgmental observations. I’m in his same political camp, and consider myself a Libertarian.

As a woman in her mid 50’s, my perceptions and personal experiences as to whether and how women get along has changed. When I was a young woman, I did not get along with other women and felt that other women did not like me. As I’ve gotten older, I have great affinity for most other women and get along well with them. It’s almost as if we have a secret code. I am fortunate to count at least 6-7 long time, female, best friends.

I thought the discussion on pornography was very relevant and revealed to me just how deliberate the diversionary tactics are. The amount of distraction and propaganda is staggering. As for women buying into the porn industry, I think, as a general rule, older women watch porn with their men, and younger women watch porn, alone, more than older women. With BOB (battery operated boyfriend), women don’t really need porn.

I thought it was fascinating that male, ‘delayed gratification,’ has been abandoned with the onset and proliferation of pornography. It certainly explains the lack of marriage-material male availability.

I appreciated the discussion of how less engagement in the matrix and more engagement in high quality activities like gardening, martial arts, canning and preserving, mending and fixing things, and whole host of other activities leads to a higher quality of life. It’s true.

But it’s sure hard to justify mending that $5 dollar shirt versus going out and purchasing the replacement. When you think about, how can some of these items be so darn cheap? Don’t the materials alone cost more than 99 cents?

I suppose this is where obsolesence comes in. Keep the machines churning………… no matter what.

The observation that we can’t grow forever and collapse is little by little, starting in the periphery is accurate, and there’s also the leg down with a plateau kind of collapse. I have personal experience of this since the 2008 crash. For five consecutive years, my law office declined in gross revenues, there was the dead cat bounce in 2013, then a plunge in 2014. 2015 and 2016 have been better, even so, in 2016 I grossed less than half of what the 2007 gross was.

The fact that we are trapped in our jobs because we have to pay for EVERYTHING is a real problem. There is no way out and no end in sight…………. so we have to adapt. Diversify income, reduce living expenses, acquire useful skills, plan for the short term and long term eventualities. Engaging in activities that reduce stress is essential.

It’s a good thing everything is temporary!

Just wanted to comment that there is not a proven correlation between rape and increased usage of pornography; it’s likely the opposite is true. There are dozens of articles for reference on this, but here’s one:

Though I found the conversation mostly enlightening, Mr.San Giorgio’s conservative bias is on full display when he casually remarks that it is obviously bad to hand free phones full of porn to illegal immigrants because they will start raping European women.

Whether his impression is correct, it is certainly not “obvious”. I think it’s certainly worth considering how we can maintain any of the liberal values we prize during the next phase of humanity, but in order to do so we must purge as much ignorance as possible from the discussion.

Just to mention, a quick search of “European Rape Crisis” lists a number of hard-right nativist foundations and publications. Before I take their word on this, I’d like to see a bit more proof.

There is nothing to see; its just “white knighting” by racists who think they can scare white women into their beds with stories about “the rape crisis.”

They run the same routine on black people telling them: “you should accept white supremacy because if the chinks take over, they are gonna eat you and turn you into luggage…”

        or boots,

        or wallets…

Widespread readily available birth control has been a big game changer in our world and when collapse comes, birth control will no longer be readily be available. Everything will become more basic. We cannot escape our biology. The instinct to bear children and protect them is strong with most women. Birth control allows us to delay or defer bearing and nurturing children. Women who are pregnant and caring for children are more vulnerable in a society that is less technologically advanced and a less technologically advanced society is where we are headed. I fear that most women and men today are not prepared for this. Both men and women are going to have a big shock when collapse comes. There are too many young people coming up now who are living in a fantasy world. A lot of young people, both men and women are refusing to “grow up”. Life will be much harder when things collapse and those who can’t “grow up” and deal with reality will pay a heavy price. There will be a lot more unplanned and unwanted pregnancies when birth control is not available. The big question is… ”How are we going to handle it?” I fear there is going to be a lot of suffering all around.

I suspect we will handle it the same way it was handled in the past?

Prohibitions and limitations on female behavior will be reloaded so males can guarantee paternity and thereby have something to live, fight and die for.

      Its not complicated.

‘Selection pressures mean traitorous whores always survive to pass their traitorous whore genes along to the next generation.
        Just sayin.’

Ah, but you’re not ‘just sayin’. I was going to engage with one or two of your points but the level of ignorance, hatred, bigotry and misogyny that you display puts you in the ‘where to start…’ category so it really isn’t worth bothering. However, I’m happy to share this comment from the educated, thoughtful, delightful and totally ‘unhateful’ Clive James:

‘Indestructible microbial organisms, blog-trolls copulate with themselves constantly, producing offspring in the form of lethally insolent verbal tics. In a previous column I noted that the use of the word “methinks” was a sign to stop reading. It has since occurred to me that if you glance straight away at the end of any posting and find the two-word sentence “Just saying” you don’t have to read the confident statements that lead up to it….If I had started looking for these signals earlier I might have saved a year of my life.’

        Back to your own offerings:
‘Prohibitions and limitations on female behavior will be reloaded so males can guarantee paternity and thereby have something to live, fight and die for.’

It is a shame if men aren’t ‘man enough’ to care for and protect children just because they are vulnerable children, but if you consider them to be so ignoble and near to their caveman ancestors that they will only protect children in whom they have a genetic investment, then I will have to leave you to your rather depressing views. You may or may not be right, but if you are right it doesn’t say much for the men you bizarrely think are ‘superior’ to women.

        ‘Its not complicated’.

Actually it generally is. Those of the Trump persuation who try to make complicated issues sound simple are – if they are given any kind of power over other people – extremely dangerous.

As for your so-called point that women are so besotted with themselves because of compliments on social media that they will not look at ‘ordinary’ men, this is the kind of nonsense that angry men tend to come out with when their porn-addled brains make them bitter because they can’t get ‘one of the ones everyone wants’ and don’t understand why women who are better looking (and possibly better educated) than them aren’t interested in them. It’s a fact of life that people of both sexes tend to pair off with partners of much the same level of attractiveness – aesthetic and intellectual – as themselves.

Women have, on the whole, both intuitively understood this and generally just gone along with it as one of the inevitabilities of life. Some men, on the other hand, just find it outrageous that there are ‘hot’ young women out there who have the temerity to want to pair up with equally ‘hot’ young men and not with them.

Being in my 60s and happily married, I’m not young, hot, in need of a partner or as shallow as either you appear to be or as you perceive women to be, so the argument doesn’t affect me personally. However, I have seen this anger in men’s blogs so many times you just wish they’d look at themselves in the mirror and try to be nice blokes, because at the end of the day, that’s actually what most ordinary women want (and yes, I get that you don’t want an ‘ordinary’ one, but that’s very much your problem).

Deal with the hatred and bitterness, my friend, and your life can only improve.

I won’t be hanging around to read another of your hateful replies, so don’t bother on my account as I’m off back to the Guardian website (yes, I know…) 🙂

I’ve been reading JHK’s blogs and books now for about 10 years and I enjoy them, particularly the World Made by Hand’ series, but some of the commenters on here really put me off and make me wish for other company.

were you ever young and hot?

If you send me a picture I might let you tase me?

🙂 I’m overwhelmed by your eloquence and erudition, but I think your mummy’s calling you to read you your bedtime story, little petal. Sweet dreams.

With some thought, I might add, it has largely been a man’s world for quite some time, as many women would agree, or maybe that was the thought process of the last several generation’s, and given the patriarchal system in which we have lived, even with the strides women have made and the fact that they are many times taken for granted, I should think many women would rather not be on the planet than to live in a collapsed, man’s world.

So women got to enter the workforce and become wage slaves, and got to pay taxes to and vote for coercive, fundamentally unethical, violence-based systems/so-called governments, and so men and women and world as a whole are now all the better for it, right?

    Fuck feminism.
