The selfie-video made by New Zealand shooter Brent Tarrant shows the world once again how shockingly banal an act of mass homicide can be. He went through the various chambers of two mosques in suburban Christchurch exterminating unarmed, helpless worshippers as if they were mere points to be racked up in a video game. They had no personalities or histories. They were just targets. And when they moaned or moved, he shot them again to make sure they were out of the game. The shooter was arrested and lives on in police custody.

He went about his task with exactly the sort of paramilitary efficiency that is portrayed so admiringly in the Mission Impossible or Fast and Furious movies, all business, no emotion. The manifesto he left on the Internet shows his clear and detailed motive for what he didn’t hesitate to label as “a terrorist attack.” He was especially interested in provoking a fresh debate over the 2nd Amendment to the Constitution in the USA, in the hopes of provoking a civil war that would break-up the nation into warring regions divided by race. He calls himself “an eco-nationalist” because he considers overpopulation the leading threat to the planet and non-Europeans to be the most fecund and therefore responsible for the problem. He will go on trial and he says he intends to plead innocent. You’d better take him seriously.

At least half the political class in the USA doesn’t take the immigration issue seriously, except as a gambit for what they think is political advantage. The Left is doing everything possible to confound the issue and muddle it with litigation at every level, from local law enforcement to congress, starting with the longstanding effort to garble the definitions of legal versus illegal immigration. The “conservative” Right doesn’t dare call them on it, out of fear of losing Hispanic votes. So, it is left to the awkward, inflammatory figure of Mr. Trump to demand clarification about what official policy will be, including the enforcement of existing laws, and he has been reviled for it all along the way. He’s not a consensus-builder, to put it mildly.

Last week, coincidental with the New Zealand mosque massacre, Mr. Trump said the following:

     “You know, the left plays a tougher game. It’s very funny. I actually think that the people on the right are tougher, but they don’t play it tougher. O.K.? I can tell you I have the support of the police, the support of the military, the support of the Bikers for Trump. I have the tough people, but they don’t play it tough — until they go to a certain point, and then it would be very bad, very bad.”

As usual, his syntax is disastrous as well as his habit of placing himself at the center of every issue. But, also as usual with Mr. Trump, and because of his filter-less tongue, he lays out matters that should be extremely troubling to all Americans: that the land is full of men with tremendous potential for violence — and most particularly men with military and paramilitary training in killing and warfare, who have, so far, barely expressed in action their discontent with the tactics of their adversaries on the Left. This Pandora’s box of calamity includes the Left’s recent campaign to denigrate men as toxic and without value, especially white men wearing their scarlet letter “P” for privilege.

The Left had better sober up and join an intelligible good faith debate about US immigration policy and the enforcement of existing laws or this will lead to exactly what Brent Tarrant laid out and what Mr. Trump maladroitly hinted at. Instead, of course, we will more likely commence another bootless campaign over guns. Here are some plain facts about that. There are already enough firearms of every sort loose in this land to commence hot civil warfare and they will not be surrendered by their owners. The horses are out of the barn on that one, even if sales of military-style weapons are outlawed. Any effort to confiscate them from people already possessing them will only provoke more overt antagonism between the two poles of American politics — and would probably lead to exactly the sort of violence that sober observers discern on the horizon.

Our battered American common culture and its expression in political consensus ought to start with the foundation of the social contract: the agreement to not slaughter each other. That is, at least, the one principle that ought to stand on its own as self-evident, without any need for equivocation via “diversity” arguments. The Left is playing with fire on this with its dishonest, bad faith approach to debating the immigration question, and the gun debate will only provide a distraction from it.

    I hope that everyone had a good St Patricks Day.

    The media is having a field day over the 2 actresses [+48 others] facing federal charges over ‘cheating.’ and the NZ killings.

    Meanwhile, as someone here noted,
    In the last three weeks over 130 Coptic Christians have been massacred in Nigeria and not one word of this has been reported by the LSM.
    Why the outrage for one religious groups deaths and not for the other groups death?

      Thank you, I had a quiet St. Patrick’s Day, which I celebrated by posting an entry about food, drink, and dance for St. Patrick’s Day in Detroit. I hope the rest of the readers here also had a happy St. Patrick’s Day.

      On a more serious note, thousands of U.S. students held a strike for the climate on Friday. It actually made me hopeful about the future.

            Maybe someone should inform, or re-inform at least, J. Kunstler that the social contract of not slaughtering each other was broken about 150 years ago. That was When Republican Abe Lincoln decided to declare war on one half the nation, exterminating around five hundred thousand fellow Americans in the process. Of course he did it under the moral pretext of every man being equal, not his strong intention to teach individual states they belong to the union.

          Why is it every time a story is reported, some ahole from somewhere finds a story that was not reported and then blames the MSM for not reporting that story. Who the hell would watch that much news anyway? If you choose from the multiple sources available, you could make that case every day.

            You confuse the point…and that is that the legacy media’s options for publishing such stories is practically infinite as they could even just re-post the stories from the wires or from other pubs. But they don’t.

            You don’t find that telling whatsoever? You don’t find the tendencies of what is published and what is not a hint at any sort of an agenda? You don’t think that the legacy/MSM could just as easily make a “crisis” out of any such mass killing they choose and get a sizable portion of the dolts to chant in unison for “action”? To offer them such excuses for their selective editorial choices is either wishful or naive.

          I disagree, Scratch. I think the narrative that is being promoted by the msm is, “white men are evil, racist, oppressors who need to have their guns and power stripped from them.” The murder of Christians by black Africans doesn’t fit that narrative, and so doesn’t get coverage.

          Maybe I am just a paranoid conspiracy theorist. Time will tell.

            That’s the American MSM, and it plays very well here indeed. But of course the world is much bigger than that and there are many other populations to be influenced out there too. It’s not that you’re “just” a “paranoid conspiracy theorist.” It’s that your conspiracy theory isn’t nearly comprehensive enough. Globalism is all about smashing the will of nation states at this particular point in time, so racial and ethnic vilification is location sensitive. It’s a very fluid strategy in that sense.

        I have to admit, when I read about Ebba Akerlund’s murder in Sweden I was upset too: 11 year handicapped old Swedish girl walking to meet her mother after school deliberately run down by a muzzie in a stolen beer truck, her little body cut in half. And the Swedish govt hardly even acknowledged her death, like they could give a f-k less. Then when the police went to arrest this scumbag in the Muslim neighborhood in Stockholm where he lived they were driven out by organized armed resistance.

        Now I read Ebba’s grave is routinely vandalized by illegals from Africa in the Middle East.

        Just for the record, the shooter in Christchurch was Australian, not a New Zealander – not that makes any difference.

        Here’s why he went to New Zealand to do this terrible thing…

        In the wake of the Port Arthur massacre on 1996, which was the last of a dozen similar mass shootings in the previous couple of years, the Australian Federal Government put an outright BAN on military-style semi-automatic & automatic weapons.

        It took the Parliament a mere 12 days after that massacre to enact the legislation.

        Over the next 18 months or so, there was an amnesty for people owning now-illegal weapons to surrender them (for which they were fully compensated financially). The whole cache was collected and publically smelted into a lump of metal & plastics.

        They also set up a comprehensive register of both gun owners & guns, so they know how many guns (at least legally) reside in Australia, where they are and who is responsible for them.

        New Zealand’s right-leaning government of the time, never having experienced such an event before, declined to join with Australia in that action. I’m betting they regret it now (if politicians ever allow themselves to feel emotions like regret).

        It was a fecking AR15 that this lunatic used last Friday – who’d have thunk it?

        So, he couldn’t have gotten away with it in Australia – couldn’t have got hold of such a weapon, and would have been confronted by armed police within minutes of starting his heinous rampage.

        The current NZ government has announced that there will be major changes to gun laws and it is expected to take only a couple of weeks to enact – the banning of semi-automatic military-style arms (fully automatic weapons are illegal outside the police & armed forces).

        Oh, and he stated plainly in his Twitter-published ‘manifesto’ that he loves & admires Trump – any surprise there?

    “. . . . . the foundation of the social contract . . . . ” Yes, indeed, that would be the place to start because, there, you’re talking about one of the bases of culture. But for that foundational aspect of our common culture to work, there must be the values and norms that are taught and believed by the populace and that is not happening. The populace has reached the point of not agreeing on much of anything except, what is my personal interest in the thing before me. The filters that would mitigate this selfishness are now missing; family, church, school, neighborhood, economy. In order for social contract to mean anything again, those institutions must be rebuilt and I don’t see that happening.

          I am just a pacifist observer, but what I am observing is a population that is becoming polarized to the extreme.

          My thoughts are that both extremes will need to suffer crushing hardship prior to any kind of amicable reconciliation, and generally speaking, the US population does not know what “tough” is, and from that perspective, events have barely started to bloom.

        Of course, generalized war could create conditions for the kind of collapse that would require a renewal of social institutions, even a reset of cultural values and norms. But there is no guarantee that it would do so. Germany had to rebuild its social institutions after WW11, but its culture remained basically the same. Japan, on the other hand, essentially rebuilt its culture along Western lines and thrived under the process. We, in the West, are in the process of cultural change, but have no idea how it will result. There are some trending lines and, at this point, they don’t point toward stable capitalistic economies or democratic institutions.

          As Ol’ Scratch points out several posts below, one side is not even willing to have a civil discussion about most issues with the other.

          I believe that “you cannot legislate morality”, that a civilized society is a product of individuals leading by example, but a polarized society needs to experience hardship in order to see the world from another’s perspective, and get back to the basics of treating all things with dignity and respect.

          I’d suggest that Japans success is predicated on wars that essentially re-set the game, and them adopting the basics of treating all living things with dignity and respect. Generally speaking, I see the Japanese as among the most respectful people on the planet.

    As with the firearms themselves, the horses are already out of the barn with regard to the left’s sanctimonious view of history. I just came from a such a discussion with a co-worker of the liberal academic bent, and I can tell you that he honestly believes that people sympathetic to Trump are simply too stupid to even engage in conversation with. I’ve found his views to be typical in the rarefied intellectual air in which I am surrounded. I don’t see any of them moderating or reversing course on their views in that regard any time soon.

    As for our shooter, I’d be very surprised indeed if he wasn’t at least facilitated in some way by those who benefit from these kinds of things, but of course we’ll never know for sure. The fact that he’s so neatly “packaged” with a manifesto and posted videos of the event online is a definite red flag for me, as is his ability to travel the world looking for an optimal target. At the very least it’s an extremely fortuitous coincidence for those who benefit from inciting violence, and I’m not a strong believer in coincidence these days.

          Anders Breivik is a handsome fellow, but more than a bit of a goof the way he presented himself in pictures. Nonetheless, he laid out in methodical Nordic detail how he planned it for years, slowly gathering materials and weapons and learning how to use them. Simply put: he was/is a very capable man, good at “material life” (making money) and of course possessed of strong convictions.

    I have not watched video and have no intention of watching it. I did catch a glimpse of his rifle. This guy is evil and has really pissed me off. People like him are why governments want to restrict my gun rights. I value my gun rights and will not give in on them easily. Amend the US Constitution and I will abide by gun control laws. Until then, I believe any gun control laws are illegal. One good thing about Trump are his nominations to the SCOTUS.

    It looks like the mad man used an AR15 derivative with a weird stock that I am unfamiliar with and an EOTECH holographic reflex sight. That sight alone costs about $500. If you know how to use it, you can accurately fire many rounds in a short amount of time. It is mostly used for short ranges.

    The longer 20″ barrel used over the more popular 16″ barrel means he was able to maximize the muzzle velocity of the 5.56×45 loads. This is very bad because the bullets are more likely to yaw in the target causing massive damage. The damage is almost as bad as what a HP hunting load would do.

    As bad as this event was, it could be far worst. There are newer calibers that are as powerful as a hunting load for deer being used in the AR15. So far the only caliber used has been the varmint round ( .223 or 5.56×45). You think a varmint round is bad? Take a look at what a hunting load for deer can do. These hunting loads are designed to kill quickly and are many times more powerful than the 5.56×45.

        It should not surprise you. Many people read this forum and agree partially with Jim K. We realize things are “not right” or sustainable.

        Firearms are a common tool used by enlightened people as a way to hedge the possible turmoil of the future. I think having a tool that allows 1 man to sucessfully defend the family against a mob home invasion is very valuable. This same tool can be used to kill animals for food.

        Part of me wonders what would happen if the police served an illegal no knock warrant search on someone like they did in Houston who had sn AR-15 with a Bushmaster 450 upper. The BM450 packs as much punch as a Government 45-75. It can shoot a 250 grain .452″ bullet at 2,200 fps. It is capable of killing a Bison almost instantly. It may not defeat all body armor but it will hit the target with so much force that it will likely break ribs and cause serious injury.

        Google how many different calibers the AR15 can be configured to shoot. You will be amazed.

            White trash? This is a nebulous description used on many people. If someone has only a HS diploma but can carry out skills such as hunting and harvesting an animal, does that make them white trash? What if they are an INTJ on the Briggs Meyers test? Thsee are the types that can solve problems dealing with complex issues in a massive interconnected system. Think about the master mechanics working on a modem engine.

            Derogatory names are applied to many people based on the inabilities of the name callers many times. I ran into this in college while earning a BS in engineering. My grades were not the best but I finished and used the education to obtain a highly technical “blue collar” job that most people would be unable to handle. I even obtained a federally issued license to operate a very powerful machine. I do recall that many of my class mates were one track mind thinkers that could never handle a fast and fluid problem requiring sudden shifts of attention or prioritization of tasks needed to be completed. They made good grades but would never be able to succeed in stressful situations where seconds count.

        I would say more precise. It will allow you to put rounds on target consistently in a human sized target at short to moderate ranges. If you want accuracy, you must get a scope with optical magnification. Scopes destroy you field of view and slow you down but allow you to be extremely accurate at long ranges.

        The EOTECH sight simply over lays a laser hologram on a glass window. There is no magnification. You shoot with both eyes open so you need to train to make the best use of it and get familiar with it. Put the hologram on the target and you will likely hit it. The main problem with these holographic reflex sights are eye issues like astigmatisms that blur the holigram. It is not as accurate as a scope. It simply allows a person to target quickly and quickly hit somewhere in the torso for “good enough”.

In NJ, a recent law that required owners of standard capacity magazines to destroy or surrender them resulted in not a single documented case of one being surrendered. In NY , the “safe act” required the registration of previously legally owned semi-automatic rifles, the compliance rate for that law is in the low single digits. The same is true for the registration scheme in CT. I don’t see any doors being kicked down. This is nothing more than jury nullification writ large.

In a relatively short period of time the conventional oil fields are going to fall off the bumpy plateau. Once that happens no combination of fracking, tar sands, conservation, and unicorn farts is going to stop the oil supply from naturally contracting 2-7% per annum forever. That is going to crush global civilization and the Democratic process. The body count from the chaos that ensures is going to make recent gun deaths look utterly trivial by comparison. Even you are going to want a gun then.

    Jim was spot on today. Man is tribal, and doesn’t mix well with “others”. It has only kinda sorta worked post-WWII in the USA because of the unbelievable prosperity. That is going away soon. This is our new normal.

    I reject violence as a viable alternative to political discourse in a civilized country. The sad thing is, viewed through a tribal lens, you can see the logic in the terrorism on both sides. The young Muslim sees Western countries bombing and destabilizing Arab lands to maintain access to Arab oil. That has been the Western modus operandi for 75+ years. If my neighbors wedding party got bombed, and my political process got derailed by foreigners, I would be joining ISIS and chopping off heads too. Which is why, when we do this to other people, it doesn’t make sense to then allow them to emigrate to our country. They are understandably aggrieved.

    Likewise, if I am a disaffected young White man, who has no say in government, but sees his economic opportunities disappearing, gets bombarded with messages that he is evil, and then sees foreign men raping “his” women and committing crimes in his country, well, violence against that “other” seems like a solution.

    The political left and emboldened minority groups are going to find that not all of the Western White men are skinny jean wearing metrosexuals. To date, most White men have had too much to lose (economically, culturally, etc.) to fight. As more and more slip out of the middle and working classes, tribalism and violence will increase. This is particularly disconcerting with regards to White men, because, unlike a lot of other groups, they don’t have as strong a cultural tradition to fall back on. When they look back for examples, they are going to default to the rhetoric of the Nazis and the KKK.

    The long emergency, in this country, is almost assuredly going to lead to tribalism and genocide along racial lines. The pragmatic approach to this would be to halt immigration, and push assimilation of the groups already here to the greatest extent possible. The more assimilated Americans are, the less likely they would be to revert to tribalism. Instead, we have been doing the opposite, purposely balkanizing the country with immigrants from all over the world. The end result is going to be horrific for all involved.

All the different races, nationalities, and cultures will make America ungovernable in the traditional sense. I’m older and have some health issues, so I may or may not live to see it all come crashing down, but I think it is inevitable. Then again, things are deteriorating quite rapidly.

      Karl, I would add to your description the inability of society’s “elite” to develop a softer economic landing for the many driven out of work by automation. Plenty of ‘disaffected white men’ there, as well as others of many ethnic groups.

      HRC blithely dismissed these people as ‘deplorables’ without devoting even a moment’s thought as to the role people like her played in the economic collapse that has shrunk the middle class and added handsomely to the ranks of poverty.

      And yes, the USA has far too many people who appear to believe that functioning with reality in mind is purely optional. The wishful thinking has gone on too long, and reality wants its pound of flesh.

My life’s work is preparing my children as best I can so that they have the best possible chance of carrying our family through the bottleneck. That is my purpose.

    As the years go by, and the shooting events go by, and the Mexican cartel mayhem goes by, and the black on black and black on white violence goes by, I find myself–who has never ever even shot a gun–realizing that the saying “an armed society, is a polite society” the relevant philosophy in the most nations.

    As the years go by, the robotic moronic calls for gun “control” sound more and more like the stupidities they are. It is tiring to hear anyone support gun control at all. Instead there should be a law mandating gun possession for all.

    Likewise tiring is Trump bashing in any form. They guy may not be Wiliam Shakespear, but he’s just saying in his New York way what is patently true. You get it half right, Jim.

      Reminds me of an exchange I had with an officer a few years ago while working 3rd shift as a second job at a small all-night grocery that mostly catered to drunk college students buying frozen pizzas after bar hoping.

      A bum had come in three times this particular night to buy cooking wine with his ebt card. He was way gone and on his third visit in we declined him service. He got belligerent and threatened violence to us and the store. At this point I had a hold of the nightstick under the register. We told him we were calling the police and his best bet were to make tracks.

      Anyways, the cops got him and reported back to us. The officer was getting my information and was telling me how upon the arrest, in which they had to handcuff him against the ground as he resisted arrest, a group of college students circled him and the other present officer with their cell phones and yelled police brutality, blah blah blah.

      I looked at the officer and said to him, “When I was 21, I did not have a degree of respect for police myself…then I grew the f*** up.” We both broke into a sincere laughter. After a stressful night for both of us, just trying to keep the stupid order required of our stupid jobs, it felt significant in that moment to relate as two men who realized how chaotic and unnecessarily societal problems can be, when it is often the self proclaimed high and mighty who are often causing or allowing most of these problems in the first place.

    I have been banned from a forum or two even one that was related to this one for pontificating on the following truth.

    Mostly, I am a good American mongrel but a large percentage of my heritage is Scotch-Irish. One part of my family tree was run out of Scotland to Ireland and then run out again to the US. The other half was run out of Ireland during the start of the troubles to the good old. Keep in mind that it is largely accepted that these clans gave us the birth of modern terrorism in the struggle to be Ireland and not the UK.

    Many of us grew up hearing the stories of coming to he US from state sponsored starvation or at the point of a gun. We got off the boats in Manhattan put on the blue and as a side effect freed those of color. Having only recently left our homeland because the Irish held less worth than a slave. In the South you could at least sell a slave. The English only wanted the Irish dead. All of that said we cherish the second amendment and not for hunting. We know why governments desire to disarm the subjects and it is not for their safety. We chose to remain armed citizens and will not negotiate the right. We will when left no other option fight. We will fight dirty and we will not stop until lead is replaced by rope for those who choose to go there.

    In the end, all we can hope for is that those who would rule hear this message because all that awaits them is death, destruction and the rope. In America, there are many who come from not being free- Blacks, Irish, Scots and many others. We will not go back to being subjects.

    We will not start the fight and do not advocate violence but we will not also not be the victim of violence again.

      I had to register just to second this post as my family and I match it so closely in description and proclivities.

      But also to counter jdhines below. He expresses what I have come to realize is a belief of the bi-coastal elites, and I believe it is very much in error. They think that the only ones who will be shooting back are “rednecks,” “hicks in wife-beaters,” “meth-addled,” “opioid addicted,” “hicks,” “stupid,” “deplorable,” “racist,” etc. etc.

      This couldn’t be further from the truth. Among my close family and friends who would be involved are physicians, assistant DAs, upper-level management of large corporations, accountants, hospital CEOs, recently discharged vets, etc.

      I have had interesting discussions with LEOs over a pint at our local pub as well.

      We may never be roused to action and required to “fight dirty” as described above, but to persist in what I feel are misguided beliefs is possibly foolhardy.

      BTW, none of us would need to learn from a board what an EOTECH is, and most own similar.

        Not defending Trump, but it’s still possible he’s being played, as he’s surrounded by enemies on all sides now. That said, he’s put himself in this position time and time again, so he was almost certainly never up to the job in the first place. I don’t think Trump has any particular allegiance, he’s too impulsive and scattershot in his actions. But the way the Dems and Reps are both imploding right now, I still think it’s possible for him to “snatch victory from the jaws of defeat” and win again in 2020. At which time the deep state will likely throw in the towel and just murder him outright.

      Illegal immigration is at a low, but over 70,000 people still entered illegally last month alone. That is a lot by any objective standard.

      Also, don’t be so confident about the ability of the “Left” to direct the US military to take action domestically, against civilians. A significant portion of the military is composed of your “gun toting, redneck, Right Wing, Republican voting, red state dwelling, idiots”. My best guess is that turning the military loose domestically would fracture the military. All of America is not New York, D.C., or Los Angeles. You don’t have to like the rest of them, but you marginalize them at your peril.

    What’s obvious in this “debate” on immigration is that the elites of US society, whether they mouth the slogans of the Left, or those of the Right, are fully convinced of their own invincibility. They cannot conceive of their own vulnerability to high velocity projectiles or to the deleterious effects of what even the most illiterate people on the planet can produce; the IED, the home-made bomb.

    See, it’s other people that die like dogs, not them. It’s the woebegone, sandal-wearing donkey-rider in the hills of Afghanistan that gets gunned down, it’s the Deplorable twenty-two year old with the high-school certificate and the august rank of corporal that comes home dismembered in a coffin to his weeping mom, but a fate like that is surely not in the cards for the Manhattanite NYU grad.

    You try to disabuse them of the notion but they’re not about to listen, the probability of such a fate for someone so innately superior being something between zero and nada. And so they strive mightily in word and deed to set Americans at one another’s throats as if in the resulting conflagrations the instigators would necessarily remain unscathed.

    The rhetoric of Left and Right provides the smoke screen but in actuality Right is no different from Left on the immigration issue. So-called conservatives want open immigration because they want cheap labor and a disposable workforce for the corporate sector. So-called progressives want open immigration for the exact same reason. When it comes to actual policy when in power, Left and Right are pretty much the same. Both are in the pockets of a handful of billionaire donors who finance their political operations, who provide post-politics careers, who look after the well-being of the senator’s kids, and so both Left and Right do the billionaire’s bidding.

    The Left openly despises Deplorables as fat, toothless, racist, ignoramuses and don’t even try to get their votes, the Right laughs at Deplorables as credulous buffoons. What neither Left nor Right take into account is the reality of the day-to-day circumstances of the people they denigrate. And they don’t figure they have to because they figure they’ve got nothing to fear from them. And so we get this patently fraudulent “debate” on immigration which in fact is no debate whatsoever.

    Nothing to fear? It ain’t so because, as Jim sez, the country is full to bursting with high powered weaponry in the hands of those same people that day-in and day-out get looked down on and spat on by both sides of the political spectrum. It’s like Abe said, you can’t fool all the people all the time, and so if enough of the people wake up, as they appear to be doing given what’s been done to them, there will be hell to pay.

    What’s at issue with immigration are bread and butter and life and death issues. It would highly behoove everyone to pay attention to Trump because what he said was the truth, those guns are no joke and neither are the men that bear them.

Even in Iraq in 2005 the “Tooth to tail” ratio was nearly 75% in non-combat roles. All it takes is a few percent of the ass-kickers to stand up and say ” No sir, I will not comply with that order” for it all to fall apart. No grand “poking at the government” necessary.

I think you’ll find the our troops are pretty well indoctrinated in following ALL orders, after they have been in their units a few months.

            Of course, there are minor exceptions to this, but they are rare. The US military has been demanding discipline and ACHIEVING it a lot longer than some rabble has been thinking about insurrection and the consequences therein.

            Also, and SO WHAT about the ratios of support troops to line troops? What does that prove?

    Reality is only so flexible so as to getting fucking breaks, don’t count on it. So, wakey, wakey JD, better smell the coffee. It’s not too late but time is not on your side and always and forever works against the blind and deliberately blind. Just who do you think the “regulars” are? Where do you think they come from? And who do you think they’ll be once they’re chewed up and spat out by the military? Where do you think they’ll go? And as to “balls”, I don’t think there’s any deficiency.

    History is replete with those feeling superior to the common man and history shows it to be a very bad approach. Abusive aristocracies and ruling classes lose and those that do their bidding lose with them.

        As for being educated in religious matters, I’ve been hanging out as of late with the Evangelicals, and I’m also part of what they used to call an “interfaith” family, which is probably the reason I’ve avoided being Jooperstitious myself.

    The most alarming thing I have seen lately is the report of Trump basically threatening violence involving the military, police, and bikers. The idea that the President of the country would talk that way is incomprehensible to me. Before Trump, this rhetoric by our leader was unheard of. Absolutely frightening that anyone in a position of responsibility would say this.

    “Authoritarianism is a slip and a slide, inch by inch, as a leader slowly backs an SUV over the republic of which the citizens handed him control. The goal is to move the window of what is acceptable to talk about slowly but decisively, until what you talked about becomes something that can be done.”

    I never dreamed that I would hear the things I am hearing in this country. Apparently the road to totalitarianism is easier to travel than I thought. Put the current state of politics together with the many crises which will inevitably develop from Climate Change, and you have a recipe for a complete Clusterfuck. The title of this blog may well be proven to be prophetic before it’s over. It don’t look good, folks.

The thing that is really scary is what will happen if this guy doesn’t leave? His base thinks everything that comes out of his mouth is pure gold. If he says the election was rigged they just might believe him. Ah well maybe it’s time we split up. The blue states have been carrying the red states for so long now it’s almost embarrassing. What would it take? Split the Fed, split the debt. Keep the same currency, the same military. We make our laws, they make their’s. If they want a wall, let em build it. We don’t care. We’re not paying for it. It’ll be the American Union. Maybe split it into 6 regions. New England. The South. The Rust Belt. Texas/OK/NM. The Plain States. The Left Coast. Anyone attacks any of the states we come to the rescue. Otherwise we co-exist peacefully. Live and let live. Estonia is the wealthiest of the former Soviet states and has a thriving electronics business. Tajikistan is the poorest and went through a protracted civil war after the breakup. I would think we would avoid that. Since we’re a service economy, we’re all in the same boat. No one likes this anymore. This way we’re still the United States, but instead of 50 we’re only 6 anymore. Think of the efficiency pop we would get right off the bat. 6 government instead of 50. Re-organize the congress. The Plains States would probably be the poorest. They would screw it up.

I get the impression that you are trying to justify Trump’s rhetoric by saying “Well they did it first.”, which then makes whatever you or someone else does in response all right, which is a recipe for madness.

        Watching this situation go down, reminds me of reading about Jim Jones and the people’s temple. Standing on the outside and neutrally observing the descent into madness, right up to the kool aid. I feel the same way when I read the news every day here in this country, and I honestly think we are being led by a megalomaniac.         I am not sure what your point is. Trump is hardly right wing. His history of donations to politics also includes democrats. His ego got into the race having been baited by saint obama. He never expected to win. Even the ruskies could not have pulled that one off. Trump took shots at his opponents. He was blunt, unmerciful including with HRC. He was the guy saying stuff that many others wish they could say out of sheer frustration with the national direction. He played to that whether he believed it or not. Any president would be hanging out to dry if the media went after them the way it has with Trump who essentially asked for it. It is unfortunate for the country that the two possible worst candidates in history were running simultaneously. It appears we will have a replay of 2016 in 2020. For the record, I voted for the libertarian. Trump’s presidency has not damaged me in the slightest which is one advantage of being old and retired.

        What do you think paradise ought to look like in Amerika? Free pot? Opioids for everyone? A borderless country where any diseased, no skills, possibly criminal person can just walk into? You might really like the Cuban paradise. Remember the famous boat lift out of there when Carter said, “y’all come”. Cuba sent their criminals with it.

We are headed back into the norm where the gilded age rich own almost everything and a small middle class get squeezed between rich and vast numbers of poor, lower class. Instead of understanding who the enemy of the people really are which are the rich, they focus on white males as the culprit behind all of society’s woes. Break the white males and paradise will come into being. After all, we must have a scapegoat and white males will do. America’s woes existed long before Trump and will continue after he becomes a footnote in a history book which no one will read. The American Dream is getting rich just like the Clintons did and the Obamas.

            My point is THINGS WILL GET WORSE REGARDLESS OF WHAT PERSONALITY OCCUPIES THE WHITE HOUSE. There will never be peace. The pie has been sliced and the part left for most of humanity ain’t big enough.

            Again, I agree completely. I don’t know where you live JD, but here in Washington state we have the worst tax policy in the country. That’s the expert opinion and not my own, but I can tell you the taxes are bad. That tax policy unfairly burdens the poor, and favors the rich just based on how is structured. I have lived in this state my whole life and I am unaware of any time that it has not been run by the democrats. The dems fucked this state with high taxes and excessive regulations. It is a hard state to do business in and the homeless are every where. If you want to see government mismanagement look no further than Seattle – run by democrats.

            Every one I know had affordable health care before Obama care.

            Again, I look at how my own state is mismanaged. Get on SSI so that you can get a Medicaid card to buy OxyContin and then sell it to third parties for thousands of bucks.

    Get the old people in on it to sell their pills to young kids.

    It seems that a big part of the opiate economy in rural America is WalMart. People shoplift merchandise from WalMart and trade the goods from WalMart for OxyContin at a 50% discount. (The old fart “Greeters” at WalMart turn a blind eye to the blatant theft because they only get paid $10 bucks an hour, and they aren’t going to confront some deranged desperate opioid addict.) So that if, for example, a Black & Decker Power saw sells for $60 bucks at WalMart the shoplifter can barter it for a 30 mg OxyContin Pill. The going black market rate for OxyContin is $1.00 per each milligram, so that a 30 milligram OxyContin Pill sells for $30 bucks. In some places OxyContin has become an alternative currency to the US dollar. It’s like one of those futuristic James Howard Kunstler post-Collapse novels.

    The Western Elite and political establishment ultimately bear the blame for this event in my opinion. As they continue to ignore the plight of native born Whites the situation will only grow more dire. Both the Left and the Right of the spectrum are involved in this and are to blame. They have all enriched themselves destroying our countries with unlimited immigration and refugees. They want the cheap labor. They want an uneducated, easily manipulated underclass for votes. And ultimately they want to replace native-born populations. These are not secrets. And the backlash these policies eventually produce should come as no surprise either.

    Ending all immigration and ending all migration is a good start to a new day. It’s pretty clear the Elite won’t listen. And I am fairly certain they still don’t care. In their world people are just numbers. Expendable units that move from one column to another on a screen. Who cares what the real world looks like. And yet shock and horror when it is seen in real time. My guess is they will actually up the ante by increasing immigration, increasing refugee flows, and pursue further economic and political disenfranchisement of native born Whites.

Why are they doing what they do and what led them to this point.

Whether it is drone strikes on civilians in the Middle East that enrage Muslims or a suicide bombing by a refugee in London that enrages Westerners. The overall point being that negative consequences of social policies and political decisions often become reasons to extreme people to do extreme things. And in many cases society could have taken steps to prevent it.

      By 150 AD the Roman Empire no longer had need of the patriotism of the masses. They already owned much of the then known world. In fact, they no longer wanted that patriotism because such want might be interpreted as their owing something to those selfsame masses. The latifundia, again around 150 AD, of rural Italy were depopulated because grain was being imported from north Africa, other foodstuffs from other parts of the empire, and there was much less need for farm workers. The rural populace migrated to the cities, especially Rome, and got some kind of employment or got on the dole. Many of the rural towns were devoid of population, so the chroniclers of the late empire wrote. Also, by that time, circa 150 AD, all the old guard patrician families of the old Roman republic had died out. Sic transit gloria mundi. Draw associations as may occur to you.

    In the Visitors Center to the US Military Academy at West Point, there’s a video game in which a person (usually a teenager) can pick up a life-sized model AR-15 assault rifle and shoot a bunch of people in a video game. There are 2 rifles and, therefore, 2 contestants who can compete with each other as to see who can shoot the most people. The teenage bloke that I was with picked up one of the assault rifles and started shooting. He was much more adept at shooting people in the game than the other teenager. When the “game” ended, he put down the AR 15 and remarked with satisfaction: “I won.”

      During the West Point tour, the tour guide ( an overweight, middle-aged White woman) referred to the AR 15 video game in the West Point Visitors Center, which was a bit weird since it really doesn’t have anything to do with the institution of West Point. Her point was basically: “Be sure to also tour the Visitors Center where you can get your Nut off shooting a bunch of people.”

I was able to watch the slow degradation of my rockbound highland home and deal with it slowly over time until I had to cut my ties and mourn in peace.     Let me tell you about my day.

    It mostly consisted of several hours in a basement room, that is setup for starting vegetable sprouts, under grow lights.

    The earliest — peppers, celery, lettuces — are already an inch or so tall, reaching mightily for those wonderful LED tubes just beyond their grasp.

    The other seeds, packed into small 4″ x 4″ ziplock bags, lying on misted 3″ x 3″ paper towel inserts, are resting comfortably on 70-dgeree, temperature-controlled heating mats. Awaiting the moment of germination.

    Today, it was mostly brassica groups: Cabbages (2), Broccoli (3), Cauliflowers (2), Collards, Kale (2), Turnip, Kohlrabi, and Mizuna.

    But there were also the other cool-weather starts as well: Swiss Chard (3), Beets, Parsley Root, Perpetual Spinach, and Parsley.

    The Peas, Snap and Snow, are soaking patiently, awaiting planting in the beds a few days hence.

    Followed shortly thereafter by Carrots.

    The Garlic, Shallots, and Onions that were planted last fall, are already sporting top-growth in the 3″ – 4″ range. The Leeks are already 8″ tall.

    Soon, the tomato seeds will garner attention. Followed later by zucchini, cucumbers, beans, and squash.

    I’ve been growing vegetables for 50 years now, and know nothing else which remotely compares to fulfilling the spirit as this avocation.

    There comes with this activity — a sense of serenity, of purpose, of accomplishment, of the start on the annual journey towards the growing, nurturing, and eventual harvesting of the clean food that will nourish you: body, mind, soul, and spirit.

    This break in the mental and physical violence of our present world, is brought to you by Mother Nature.

You won’t have to do stoop labor but rather just supervise while I sit like Effendi on the porch in the shade. Who knows? Maybe I’ll invite you up for a drink now and then. Give your own little house in the back, free run of the servant girls, etc. An acre or two for yourself as a hobby or to supplement your rations, etc. A good life for both of us.

      Technical question: What about human waste as fertilizer? Uncle Ted in Montana used it to grow potatoes apparently. But I’ve heard you have to wait a long time or you can still taste it or even get sick. Have you tried it?

        Human waste really only works well, substantiated in studies, in a controlled dry composting environment.

        These composting toilets have been around for at least 5-10 years now, and the technology is proven and perfectly acceptable in the organic growing world for vegetable beds. This technology is quite remarkable, actually, however you still have to get beyond the local building commission for approval in single-family homes. YMMV.

        As for your offer of a position in your hegemony plantation, you may well remember the situation in The Long Emergency where the wealthy overlord employed numerous individuals who were highly-regarded in their fields, and he kept them safe and sustained within his own compound. And the community kept together against all intruders.

    Mr Kunstler,
    I’m a long-time reader of your blog, a New Zealander and a retired librarian. I came across you when I read your book Too Much Magic. I enjoyed it very much.
    I read your blog because I am trying to understand how Americans think. I must admit to being more confused now than when I started. Let me say firstly that the lady Green Alba usually says exactly what I would, if I were as talented a communicator. So you know where I’m coming from.
    Referring to your article. You are right to condemn the callous inhumanity of the white supremacist as he performed his massacre. I hate that so many have watched those poor people get slaughtered like it was a game. That’s exactly what the terrorist wanted.
    What I really object to is the twisting of their murders into the narrative that they shouldn’t have been here in the first place, which again is exactly what he wanted.
    Why play into his disgusting hands?
    We’re all immigrants in this country, including Maori whose blood is also in me. We can and are misidentified sometimes as other nationalities. That terrorist could have murdered me, or my family, thinking I was Muslim. I also have English blood, one of my ancestors fought at Waterloo. The thing is that I couldn’t give a rat’s arse where people come from. We’re all citizens of the world. Human. Homo Sapiens.
    The sort of anti immigration, white supremacist bullshit that led to this massacre is to blame. None of us are any better or worse for our sex, colour or creed, or history.
    I can see how bravely and well Green Alba stands up for her principles. I’d like to say I applaud and agree with her. She’s not alone.
    It’s just really sad that this atrocity has motivated me to finally get off my arse and say so.
    So I don’t agree that the left is playing with fire over the immigration issue. People have always moved around the globe for millenia and it will only increase with planetwide disruption. The sooner we embrace each other and tolerate our differences the better. As a librarian I lived that philosophy and did my best to educate myself and advocate for free speech and democracy.
    I am truly grieving about what has happened and I stand with my Prime Minister in banning semi automatics. To the fifty New Zealanders who were murdered I can only express my shame and sorrow at what happened to them.

      It should not be allowed any more at all. The proof why is here. It is hate, twisted hate, with no basis in fact. A fantastical fiction promulgated by men who basically don’t measure up. Men who can’t accomplish anything on their own who have to identify with a ’cause’ however deranged their ’cause’ may be.

      It is all to avoid the bottomless void of knowing we are nothing except what we make of ourselves. To those who can do something in life or are willing to try, this truth does not have to be so scary.       What easier way to run from the knowledge that you are shit than to decide other people who are different than you are shit. It is an ideology tailor made for the lazy and mediocre. Lazy because doing unto others as you’d have them do unto you and thus making something of yourself is about as hard as eating a piece of cherry pie. Mediocre because the big dog in the sky hates racists.

    As to Joe’s point, however, I don’t agree with soaking the rich simply because they have more than enough money, although who’s to say how much is enough. When Woody Allen married his adopted daughter he explained that “the heart wants what the heart wants.” There are people who feel this way about money.

    The assumption seems to be that the wealth of the rich was come by illegally. If so, prove it and take ALL of it away. Or that it is somehow a crime or unfair to pass on accumulated wealth to your children. I vehemently disagree. Give the inheritors enough time and they will piss it all away anyway and be in the soup with the rest of us. A fool and his money are soon parted.

            I know they have recently pushed the theory that early Europeans were dark-skinned. My understanding is that there isn’t any consensus regarding the Neanderthal appearance though I have heard that DNA evidence suggest some Neanderthals may have had red hair.

            The Tower of Babel did involve the separation of languages but it is also clear that the various people groups were dispersed across the earth to designated homelands. It is clear, if you believe the Bible, that God intentionally made different races.

          Clare, I have heard it said that conservatives are those who worked hard to get what they have and have no guilt about having it, and that liberals had it handed to them and bear the guilt that comes with handouts. But conservative and liberal are simply words and have no meaning by themselves. Saying only that you are liberal is a statement that says nothing. Liberalism and conservatism have to be quantified in order to have value. For example, I am very liberal when it comes to what anybody else says or does or how they decide to live their lives. It’s your life, you don’t need my permission to so what you want, so do it. I am very conservative when it comes to work and finance. I was raised to work hard and do my best at whatever it is that I was doing, to spend less then I made, and to understand that it is much easier to live simply than it is to live lavishly so that is what I chose.

          If we are all to embrace diversity, what exactly does that mean anyway? If we were to assemble a team of diverse individuals and assign them a task to build something such as a small house how well do you think it would go if the team consisted of the following diverse members:

          (1) one worker who did the grunt work
          (1) dreamer who thought a lot
          (1) community organizer who went around telling people what to do
          (1) lazy whiner that refused to do anything
          (1) individual that took pictures of everything as it was being done

          This is what our American society has become. A diverse team that has fewer and fewer people on it that care to or want to work and more and more lazy whiners that sit there and take instead of give. How exactly are we supposed to turn this “diversity” into something productive? Is productive something that some magic somebody else does while we sit there and whine? I cannot see that working out too well.

            Walter. I called myself liberal so as to identify myself to your culture. Here in New Zealand I am leftwing, which to me has always meant work hard, save, pay my taxes in case I or others need help- medically, education wise or in retirement which I am now.
            Of course there are lazy people, but most know they have to work in order to have a comfortable life. I own my own home, which I worked hard for and had help from the government to get into.
            We live frugally. My hubby and I, who is an ex lineman take public transport as much as possible which is free for pensioners, but we own a car.
            I’m sorry that the US has so many problems. I have visited you three times and found only friendly, welcoming people.
            I can only say that New Zealand, although we have our problems too, has done quite well so far with diversity and a multicultural society.

He is proud of his culture and tribe and will promote them and their well being in all things whether we agree or not. Westerners cannot say that about any particular leader at all.     You say its off season, but is it springlike, or still wintry? Former Sec of the Navy and Dem pres candidate Jim Webb wrote a book about Appalachia a few years back; many of the people he wrote about had their antecedents in the borderlands you mention.

      We had hailstones for about half an hour when we left Edinburgh and woke up to snow the first morning, but it rained in the afternoon and got rid of the snow and now it’s been sunny and pleasant and should be for the rest of the week. Not exactly warm, as it’s March but ‘clement’ for the time of year.

      Jedburgh’s just down the road from us – we hired a car. it’s only an hour and a half away – that’s almost like driving to work for some people 🙂 . It was just to use up some annual leave by the end of March, otherwise we’d have waited for warmer weather!

      There’s no train, but there will definitely be a bus. We’ve got the dog and loads of junk to bring, though, so it’s easier with a car. Also it’s difficult to get around when you’re here otherwise.

    Montsegur, exactly right, the loyalty of the army would not be a given and I’d bet that the soldier boy would get mighty sick, mighty fast of pointing a gun at folk he sees as his own. If the Davos Class and their bi-coastal clerisy think that the soldier is an automaton that just follows orders, I’m afraid they’re in for a great big surprise.

    Future events can take a thousand different shapes but the broad outlines we can sometimes see ahead of time. Just look at what happened in 1917 in Russia. That could’ve played out many different ways but, at the end of the day, the position of the aristocracy was untenable.

    By 1917 the major players were exhausted. It was a question of time, of cracking and seeking terms. Just think of the German 1918 spring offensive. Fifty(?) German divisions just got re-deployed from the eastern front. We now know how it ended but how did it look in March 1918? For a while it seemed like the Kaiser had a sporting chance. It was obvious this thing had to end. The question was how. Maybe the Germans forcing terms?

    Imagine 1975. From that temporal perch, who foresaw what was coming in 1989? I mean, the North Vietnamese just took the South. The position of the Communists looked pretty damn solid, the USSR and the Eastern Bloc looked as immovable as the Himalayas and the Iron Curtain really did look like it was made of iron. At least, that’s how it looked to me. I thought for sure I’d grow old and die still in the middle of the Cold War.

    What does all this tell us? Look at where things are at. It tells us that people in positions of power and privilege are way too self-confident, individually and collectively. The pre-1914 Russian, German, Ottoman and Hapsburg ruling classes are gone. Fair to say nobody foresaw that in 1914, least of all the ousted rulers. And now the communists are gone. Mao is gone and so is the craziness he sowed.

    Do present day ruling classes ever take note? Do they never suppose that what happened to the Ceaucescus or Romanovs could happen to them? Macron hurled so many insults at French Deplorables that he’s lucky he can still take a piss standing up. And yet the august grads of the grand French haute ecoles kept pushing their luck.

    I know there’s a lot to choose from as far as idiotic political speeches goes, but Hillary’s Deplorable speech gets my vote. I guess it served one purpose because if anyone was in doubt as to the dividing lines of class and region in the US before the speech, there was surely no doubt afterwords. Did she learn? No, of course not, After the election she doubled down.

    In short, like their overseas predecessors, American ruling classes are way, way too confident about their grip on power.

    And I’ll bet the stray yellow dog finds a home in a trailer park.

    And hurray for the Brits. What balls. Where would we be without the Brits?

      I agree. It all makes me wonder if the common take on revolution (seen as undesirable) is mistaken. It may be that occasional revolutions are necessary because periods of tranquility that endure too long ultimately result in absurdly distorted distributions of wealth and power.

      As for Europe, it may be the mythical and notional, yet beloved, European (in the minds of the Eurocracy, at least) has gotten a stomach ache from too many MMMs — you know, the trio of we-know-better … “funny” how the childless are themselves the poster children of Davos Dysfunction. Didn’t take that crew and their ilk long to screw up Europe after receiving the fantastic gift that was the peaceful end to the Cold War.

We were given the number of 18,000 human beings brought into America for the sole purpose of sexual enterprises such as nail salons and massage parlors.     The EU started way back as the pre-emptive surrender of France to Germany. Then its justification was to make it easier for the corporate sector to do business across national borders.

    European oligarchs then figured that if they paint the idea of open borders as one subscribed to by the greatly enlightened and educated that they could con the multitude into accepting the proposal because then after all, if you’re for it, you must be one of the greatly enlightened and educated. It was a brilliant con-job and for a while it worked. But all along, the idea was the flip-side of offshoring, to move desperate and impoverished people into high-wage countries where they would not only work for peanuts (because they were desperate) but also to lower over-all wage levels. See, it’s like the CEO of GE said about American workers: they make too much. So do European workers.

    Of course you can’t fool all the people all the time and even the thickest-skulled yob could see the mal-functioning monetary and economic and political shambles that the EU became and his prospects of good paying employment and reasonably priced accommodation going down the drain. Hence, on the French side you have the Yellow Jackets with their weekly festivities. In Italy you have Salvini and company running the show. In Germany a lot of people weren’t on board with opening the borders to who knows who from a war ravaged place that birthed a civilization that wasn’t and isn’t exactly friendly to its Western competitor. So now there’s a German political movement that isn’t on board with what they’re told is good for them. Oh, and there’s Hungary and Poland and their own regimes that are taking a pass.

    The point of course is that the Brexiteers aren’t the only dissenters and mal-contents. So yeah, hurray for the Brits, and not only them but hurray for the Yellow Jackets for standing up for themselves. And the others.

    Of course, according to the perfumed elite, this is fascism aborning yet gain. Well, it’s not, and it’s not fascism on this side of the pond. But if the ruling classes keep on the present course of disdaining the interests of working people, or insulting them as Macron likes to do, this could get real ugly.

    And um, Green Alba, all these rich guys making these bets are just rich guys making bets against other rich guys. What we have afoot here is a multi-national movement to put these rich guys in their place. Of course, we’re in the early chapters of the story. While events move along at a faster clip than they formerly did, this will still take a while to play out. It took a few generations to get into this fix, it won’t get unfixed overnight.

    As far as your personal interests go, nobody blames you for looking after them, if that’s what you’re doing. And that’s fine, that’s how it is. Unless you’re a government employed troll, I would find it highly unlikely that you’re rich because rich people tend to not give sites like this any heed. IOW I think you’re like us, one of us.

      Yet again, I don’t know what personal interests you think I have that I’m zealously defending. I’m retired. I don’t have a job to lose and I can manage without the few bob I make freelancing. It just keeps my hand in. No election I’ve ever voted in has ever made the slightest difference to me personally. But I still vote.

      I don’t want to see my country fall apart economically, with people less fortunate than me (I don’t have much but it’s paid up) losing their jobs and homes. I don’t know why this leaves you untouched. And I don’t know why you find that motivation strange. Even Rees-Mogg, who’s made £7m since the referendum, says it will be 50 years before the UK makes up for Brexit losses. Which basically means it never will.

      I don’t want to see farmers ruined by having 40% WTO tariffs slapped on their product. So, when you say you don’t blame me for looking after my interests I find that kinda patronising.

      And no, I’m not a government troll. And I’m not rich either. I get about two weeks a year in a house with more than one bedroom. This week is one of them.

      What I will never understand is how you think Brexit is the end of globalism for the UK. When I started working for my last firm in 1998 there were 70 employees. Now there are seven. I’ve been interviewed for my own job three times as they reduced the numbers over the years. And where did the other jobs go? Well, some went down to Oxford and the rest went to India. Nothing to do with the EU. And the IT department in Oxford had people from India in it too. Nothing to do with the EU.

      Except now, in the UK, we’ll have fewer people from the EU and more from India. I’m not sure what that’s supposed to achieve.

        But I’m not getting drawn into any more Brexit discussions no matter now many ‘hurray for the Brits’ you throw out. I’m not rising to it any more.

        And re those disappearing jobs, guess who calls the shots in ‘my’ firm? Yes, the Yanks. So the US corporatocracy has had far more influence on my life and those of my colleagues than anything the EU has ever done.
