Ray Jason blogs as the Sea Gypsy Philosopher. He has lived on his sailboat, the Aventura, for nearly thirty years, lately off the coast of Central America. Before that, Ray worked as a street performer, juggling in San Francisco. He’s crossed the Pacific solo from California to Hawaii many times, and is the author of Tales of a Sea Gypsy and, of course The Sea Gypsy Philosopher. I enjoyed discussing the many technicalities of life on a boat with him. I hope you find this a charming relief from the political calamities and anxieties of the day, as much as I did — and perhaps an inspiration to find a rewarding journey in life away from the humdrum annoyances of the landlubber way.

The KunstlerCast theme music is the beautiful Two Rivers Waltz written and performed by Larry Unger.

Nice diversion from the insanity of the world.

Like a time warp back to happier decades.

This was SO much fun, Jim! Thank you for sharing the perspective of a smart, capable, self-sufficient man who knows what he’s about and sees what’s happening in the U.S. from a healthy distance. Having decamped from Vermont to Mexico myself in August 2020, I share his viewpoint and wish I, too, could live on a boat. I loved being introduced to Ray and am now following his blog. Many thanks to both of you, and please do this again!

Deb, you’re right, the podcast was just superb.

I’ve been a devoted patreon of both Jim and Ray for several years, but to hear them BOTH live was a very special treat.

As Ray said (about Jim) I Love the thinking/creativity/wordsmithing that Jim brings to the table. It’s fantastic, and his ‘take on things that are going-on is just is Truly rewarding.

Ray’s live aboard lifestyle has captivated me for a long time, and in the current World I truly think he (and his Sea Gypsy collective) is on to something that we may ALL wish for in the not too distant future. Symplicity, mobility, friendship; not much more that a person really needs!

      Great Folks….

    What a relief!

I was really getting very tired lately of the non-stop politics and then this interview came along as a pleasant surprise and a real relief.

    Way to go Jimbo!

That was truly a breath of fresh sea breeze. It even touched back to the problems of the world today, but didn’t dwell on ’em. Thanks to you both!

These guys are still true hippies, Liberals (liberal derived from libertas = “free”). Not the authoritarian/marxist/neocon loonies that we have strangling us all today.

Ray – “All the bedrock virtues that you need in a civilization are eroding and it’s not accidently, its deliberate. There are forces in play that are not happy with Western civilization and want to see it ruined and are working actively to do so.

Jim – It does seem that way.

Ray – There’s nothing you can look at and say, “Wow, that’s a lot better than it was 20 years ago we’re moving in a good positive direction.””

Yes, and even our ability to communicate over long distances has its downside because of the way it can be misused Ray, and I would add that the only good that can be had from it is by small bands of outsiders sharing the truth in venues such as our host provides. How long will they allow that to continue I wonder? Perhaps only until the forces of evil go violent, which is sure to happen sooner or later, slowly at first and then all at once, right?

    Well done James, well done.

I tell you…this guy, RAY JASON, is the real deal. He lived a free life as a street juggler in San Francisco, &, now, he lives a free life on his sailing yacht, AVENTURA, in his Archipelago of Bliss. I knew RAY, in the San Francisco Bay Area, & now, I see him frequently in the Archipelago, where I also keep my boat & do my sailing. Thanks JAMES for making this podcast happen. It was like I was sitting chatting with RAY over a dinner of fish tacos. CIRQUE
