Dmitry Orlov was born in Leningrad, USSR, into an academic family, and emigrated to the US in the mid-1970s. He holds degrees in Computer Engineering and Linguistics, and has worked in a variety of fields, including high-energy physics, Internet commerce, network security and advertising. Starting in 2005, Dmitry has published hundreds of articles, three books and 10 collections of essays focusing on the forthcoming collapse of the United States specifically and Western civilization generally. He has given numerous talks and interviews, and delivered keynote addresses at many conferences. His work is translated into many languages. His latest forays are into the subjects of the abuse and misuse of technology, the various myths, religious and otherwise, around which different societies are organized, and the unfolding civilizational clash between the West and the rest. Dmitry Orlov has given me a great respect for Russia, Putin, and really helped me understand what’s really going on behind the nonsense in the Ukraine, what really happened with Crimea, and many other interesting world events that are distorted by the mainstream media.

When Orlov was born, it was called Leningrad.

So JHK is correct.
I thought the interview was excellent.
The thing I found most interesting was the West’s attempt to get Russia and China to join then was rebuffed.
I think this is all about power, the COVID being the latest, most devious and most effective scheme to concentrate power at the top.
In the process, the “elite” are destroying the west in general and the US in particular. If/when the Chinese elite move to fill the vacuum, what then? Will the Davos crowd give us back a little freedom so the USA/West can become stronger?
Orlov said the US is impotent and “cannot win a war with anyone, let alone a strong country like Russia or China.”
Orlov chooses his words well. The US may not win, but it possesses an awful lot of destructive power, conventional as well as nuclear. So it can cause a lot of damage even if it doesn’t “win”.
With all due respect, Mr. Kunstler, your guest’s views should be taken with a grain of salt. He spent half his life in the Boston area and on a boat and thinks he understands America. He doesn’t. He says that Americans are wealthy by some persisting backroom deals with wealthy foreigners. He does not understand the hard work and sacrifice that built and continues to build this nation. He currently lives in St. Petersburg and claims to speak for all Russia. Everything I’ve seen indicates that the average Russian loves American culture, contrary to his assertion that Russians are only interested in their own fascinating country.One of my Russian friendd in Chicago says that, without the Revolution, Russia would be a giant Norway now. In short, the guest is the self-important engineer type that did a miserable job engineering a planned Soviet economy.
I agree – his statements are rhetorically slick, but it is too monolithically anti-american. His description of Trump, his dispassionate description of the USSR as a pretty smoothly running machine, etc. A BIG grain of salt. We have problems, and he pointed many of them out well, but it was oftentimes overboard.

Your audience, by and large, seems connected by some subterranean, mycological network that pings each node from time to time, nurturing an ancient urge to set things straight; to awaken angrily from our collective bad dream.
I joined your audience long before I had ever heard the name, James Howard Kunstler, by listening on the regular to The Ron Smith Radio Show, here in Maryland. At some point in the ‘90s, you were a guest on his show, and I heard you, and counted you among the few people worth paying attention to. Ron, the “voice of Reason, is gone now, but you and Dmitry Orlov and others remain. Mysteriously, we find each other, like rivulets find the stream, which then finds the river.
I hope you keep soldiering on, James! And here are two suggestions, or requests, if you will, for Kunstlercast guests: Jimmy Dore and Bret Weinstein. I think they fit right in — I can easily imagine Ron Smith and yourself in lively conversation with them. We, your audience, very much need to hear these conversations between voices of reason, like yours and theirs. I wish you could find time for more Kunstlercasts. Hope springs eternal.

Just wanted to say that I’m waiting to make a full judgment on Dmitry. My initial impressions of him were very good, and I was even convinced recently to buy one of his books. So far at least, while his statements are shockingly accurate at times, sometimes he veers off the side of the road into a ditch. Sometimes I honestly don’t know whether I am merely lacking enough information in my limited worldview to discover that he’s actually correct, or if he just wants to believe whatever he wants to believe.
Having said that, I really enjoy hearing what he has to say and have actually already learned a lot from him. He’s actually one of my favorite guests!
My opinion only: best Kunstlercast I’ve heard over the 4-5 years I’ve been tuning in. I’ve listened through twice now and plan to again soon. Recommend everyone give it a second go round at least. So much information not available elsewhere to be gleaned from this one. Straightforward, concise, and yes very funny. Thank you Jim and Orlov!
