"Scrapping merit-based testing, regardless of the justification, is a manifestly terrible idea"

--------

Back in the day when I sat for my ATC Academy entrance test I sat for a 4 hr exam (the longest 4 hrs of my life) that tested for ability to interpret and manage time/space relationships among objects moving in 3 dimension space at different speeds (and you had very little time to figure the problem/s out). The top 2% of scorers were offered admission to the ATC academy. As a condition of admission, you had to pass a: (i) full day psychiatric evaluation; and (ii) FBI background check complete with unannounced interviews of relatives, neighbors and employers of yours. At the academy there was a 50% washout rate.
