Right now, the explanation(?) is that ATC asked if Helo could see the plane, Answer was yes, and ATC told them to go behind the plane. That was it. Some think the helo saw a following flight instead of the one they hit. ??
My question is over and over, why was he at 350, some say 400 feet to hit the plane? That is question number one, as …

Another thing, there has been talk of many, many near misses between these helos and planes at Reagan, one the night before the crash. With that acknowledgement, is is appalling that this has been going on.
IMHO, 67 lives from the grave, shut this boondoggle down. Build high speed rail or even mag-lev to the Mail from Dulles and maybe BWI. Reagan is a death trap.
Former enroute (above 5,000 ft & out of Approach control airpsace) ATC here. Separation errors (failure to maintain mimimum distances btwn aircraft) could be 20 miles in some instances. Gotta tell ya, I was (and still am amazed) how few collisions (and near misses) there were/are in Approach controlled airspace. To this day, when I fly, my prayer on the runway has always been "Please G-d, get me to 5,000 ft".

So,, are we to believe that flight paths are allowed to cross if their altitudes differ by 200 feet?
That is also a good point. What is considered a near miss? Less than 150 feet vertically?
