It would be nice to see the guilty swing from the gallows on the Washington Mall. However as history has shown that wish is optimism over reality. However for those with faith, Hell is open for all the scoundrels. FJB

God? Ha. As I progress in age to my twilight years my wisdom has evolved. My faith in God isn't what it used to be in the days of my youth. Today I believe two things about God. 1; God created us and has long since died off. 2; God created us and then took off with its buddies to play eternal golf on a golf paradise world and doesn't give a flying f___ about its creations.

I don't deny there is or was a God. But I no longer have faith that God is intimately involved with humanity. Either way, we are boned. It is up to us to issue justice upon the evildoers and that will never happen.

Life has a way of stripping everything from us. In a certain way I agree. He has given us all free will to live and do as we wish. I won’t get into much here except to say He gets involved in our personal lives only as much as we let Him in but he will do His will. No matter your or my opinions. Our will isn’t the last word on anything

Cheryl, you piqued another thought when you mentioned "free will." I often wonder if God sits his throne and doesn't intervene in the affairs of humanity because he has given us free will. If he were to start tinkering around with humanity he would be taking away our free will. If God takes away our free will and forces, any of us, to do or behave a certain way, God has then abrogated his responsibility to guarantee free will. If God does this God becomes a liar and a liar loses the faith of his subjects.

Maybe God doesn't intervene because God CANNOT intervene. God is subject to his own laws. If God is subject to his own laws he is therefore, not as ALL POWERFUL as we thought he was.

Anyway, the musings of a tired old brain. I am a person of faith but religions of late have done nothing but confuse me.

"Yes, we have free will; we have no choice but to have it.’ - Christopher Hitchens. Think about it!

EVERYTHING happens according to God's PLAN Christians will say. But when SOMETHING tragic happens, the Christian says God gives us FREE WILL. The age-old trick of constantly moving the goalposts.

If God is willing to prevent evil, but not able then he is not omnipotent.

If he is able, but not willing then he is malevolent.

If he is both able and willing then whence cometh evil?

If he is neither able nor willing then why call him God?

Apologists in a nutshell: "God is incomprehensible, now listen very carefully while I tell you all about him." If what God does is above us, then why do we have all these believers speaking FOR God, or forever explaining him?

The Bible was written, revised and edited many times BY the religious FOR the religious. The last thing it is, is truthful, reliable, unbiased, impartial or a neutral source. Folks that belief the entirety of Bible are willing to sacrifice their humanity on the altar of a book that they can't even prove.

Christianity: The belief that God sacrificed God to God to save God's creations from God.

If religion was kept in their churches and their heads, and that they didn't think they are superior to others, I'd be generally OK with that.

If a parent is willing to prevent a child from hurting themselves when learning to walk or ride a bike, but is unable, then they are not omnipotent.

If able but unwilling, they are malicious, right?

Thus you are refuted, etc.

Well at the very basis of energy and matter, is the particle/ wave duality. We cannot understand this. Yet it is so. Your analysis of the logic of God's capabilities and motivations, is similar to this.

Cheryl the only thing we have to fear is fear itself. Take a deep breath and return to the place you were before. I know that you know that I am saying this in good faith because I want the best for you just as you want the best for yourself.

Once a bullshit artist, always a bullshit artist (FDR, that is).

I suspect that, like Maurice Sendak, that crook, FDR, ripped-off George MacDonald (MANY, including C.S.Lewis, Lewis Carroll, G.K. Chesterton, etc., drew inspiration from MacDonald).

Well before FDR, George MacDonald observed:

"The direst foe of courage is the fear itself, not the object of it; and the man who can overcome his own terror is a hero and more."

What exactly is the bullshit that you're identifying? FDR's cooptation of that truism in service of his bs politics?

Do you see the internal contradiction in what you wrote? That your first sentence is your opinion which your second sentence nullifies? The mysterious Creator saw to it that the truth can only be known by the absence of contradiction.

Deists assert that God created the world and then left it to operate under natural laws. Deism emphasizes ethical conduct and rejects supernatural aspects of religion.

Furthermore, it is a philosophical position and rationalistic theology that rejects revelation as a source of divine knowledge.

Expand full comment

I grew up a Christian. Perhaps I have evolved into more a Deist than a Christian.

Expand full comment

Deism is just religious cooptation of reason-besed animism which acknowledges the obviousness of a Creator about which nothing can be known but whose example (Creation) can be followed, like you said, by hewing to Natural Law.
