They were cheap, reliable, got fantastic mileage, were built by Germans, and were selling like hot cakes.
You've obviously never driven a Passat or Jetta TDI or even been around them. They are completely silent and cleaner than gas motors.
No just a VW TDI wagon and it was fairly quiet.
