I heard about (but have never read) an anonymous post by a lab tech about the guilt he felt for torturing a beagle. The next day he was going to go back to the lab and break the dog's leg, again. It was unbearable to him that the dog always wagged its tail when it saw him. He was the only person in its life. It needed to love someone, even if it was its tormentor/executioner.

Heart breaking. Absolutely heart breaking. Anyone who harms an animal should have the exact same thing done to him/her/it.
