In the 1930s-40s, the U.S. was blessed with the arrival of thousands of European doctors and other professionals, wretched refugees from European fascism (I was fortunate enough to grow up in the company of two of them).

I am amazed that so many Americans know so little about how Social Security works. Social Security is limited in its investments to non-marketable US government securities and has been since the program was created. The trust fund does not send money to Ukraine, or Israel or anywhere else. It does not directly pay for tanks or drones or bullets sent to foreign governments. If the trust fund is on the brink of ruin (and it probably is), blame the fact that its mission has been expanded over the years to cover all sorts of programs that have nothing to do with retired employees.

Social Security is limited in its investments to non-marketable US government securities and has been since the program was created. The trust fund does not send money to Ukraine, or Israel or anywhere else. It does not directly pay for tanks or drones or bullets sent to foreign governments. If the trust fund is on the brink of ruin (and it probably is), blame the fact that its mission has been expanded over the years to cover all sorts of programs that have nothing to do with retired employees.

We studied Washington's battles back in my ROTC days. Washington never won a battle. He was so bad that he didn't know how bad he was which worked out well for us because anyone else would have given up. His desire to at least win one battle is why he fought so hard and risked so much to keep the army together.
What about when he crossed the Delaware? Was it just a photo-op? To be the stuff of future memory? Or did he give those lobster coats what for!
The only battle you have to win is the last one. They spent the war desperately running from the British - the US Marines of their day. No one was ever better at that kind of toy soldier warfare. When they did well, it was because of guerilla tactics. The aftermath of Concord, the British army shot up in the Appalachian forest, the surprise attack in Delaware.
