Even so, Gates, I believe, won at Saratoga, making half the British army on parole and going home. France joined the war pro USA. The British high command changed their strategy, focusing on the South. The South is what they wanted anyway, with its source of cotton and tobacco. The South were soft on independence compared to the industrial North. It was good strategy, but too late. Washington, at his best, deserted the North, New York mostly, and took his army south. In the meantime, the Southern army was whittling down Cornwallis and eventually beat him in a big battle. He withdrew to Yorktown, trying to get his army “out of Dodge”. He was surrounded, a huge mistake, by Washington by land, and the French at sea. he only had one option. When he surrendered, his army was on parole and headed for England. There was no one else, except New York, Clinton at the time, I believe, who wanted no part of trying to fight a Continental army much bigger than his. England lost the war because the USA wanted to be “free” from medieval Monarchism and wanted a Republic. By the end of the war, the USA was united behind Washington and the army. There was no way that England could counter the upsurge.
Another big part was the supply lines for the British. The USA was producing weaponry and supplies for themselves while the British had to get their resources from 3500 miles and 10 weeks away. The attrition of British supplies was a big part of the success of the Continental.
Do not degrade George Washington, he created an army from nothing, beat the best army in the world at the time and then helped create the republic as its first president. He was called upon to become a King and stopped that movement. The first American hero, in all ways possible.
