Social Security's "brink of ruin" is actually brought on by the fact that it's constantly being robbed of funds to support other (read: foreign military) misadventures. There is no and has never been a so-called "trust fund," only a fund that could be trusted to be looted and plundered all along the way, like most everything else in DC.

I agree. When the Boomer generation came of age and started to work and contribute to Social Security the ratio of those paying into it and those getting payouts from it must have been huge. Therefore the "fund" should have been enormous. Wanna bet that's how LBJ was able to have both "guns and butter"...i.e. the Vietnam War and the "Great Society"?

Well, the $270 billion sent to Ukraine -- the most corrupt country in the northern hemisphere -- had to come from somewhere.

Exactly. He was the harbinger of the many even bigger and more lucrative scams to come.

They took our money, Sonny, every chance they got. And then kept extending the retirement age when one could collect their own money without penalty. WhatтАЩs happening now is so many working but not paying into it, and the Feds stealing it. It wonтАЩt be long where itтАЩs abolished. But maybe, at the same time we see taxes abolished. Hmm.

I am amazed that so many Americans know so little about how Social Security works. Social Security is limited in its investments to non-marketable US government securities and has been since the program was created. The trust fund does not send money to Ukraine, or Israel or anywhere else. It does not directly pay for tanks or drones or bullets sent to foreign governments. If the trust fund is on the brink of ruin (and it probably is), blame the fact that its mission has been expanded over the years to cover all sorts of programs that have nothing to do with retired employees.

Might be time for means testing, IF the SS accounts were restored to ONLY basic SS payments to retirees... no BS programs or raids on the accounts.

First, all benefits of ANY kind to illegals must be halted, foreign aid cut to the bone, military budget heavily audited then massively cut... DEI and all woke social programs... halted.

I do, however, support reparations.

A one-way to Somalia. a bunch of bananas, a stick of deodorant and $20 cash.

Prove this statement to be true

And no politician can speak of increasing the age at when benefits can begin without getting voted out of office.

When the program started, I believe you could collect around the same time as you were expected to die! Now you get SS around 10-15 years before your expected demise, which is a big problem for the system.

You can't find good workers anymore, eh? Drones willing to work until they drop. I know, bring in coolies from the 3rd World. Problem solved as Alba sued to say.

So what are you advocating? Mandatory death at 70?

At a minimum, new workers should have their Normal Retirement Age, the age at which benefits start, begin closer to their life expectancy as it was originally designed. This would mean an 18 year old would begin receiving SS benefits closer to age 80, rather than the current age of 67. And then indexed for presumed increased life expectancy.

The system is broken and needs to be fixed. Increased taxes is always an option but that expands our welfare state which presents different problems.

And what's the average date of death there, ezzy? Just turn the whole thing into a government confiscation scam.

They're all heart, aren't they?

Didn't Bill Clinton breach the sanctity of social security by co-mingling that money with the general fund money so he could claim to have balanced the budget?

That was Lyndon Johnson's doing.

I stand corrected.

Reagan and Bush promised a lock box for the SSA trust fund.

Hahahahaha! The Congress, especially the House, does not give one damn about what is in the budget, they all operate on the agency theory, тАЬI need to spend more now so that I get more $ next yearтАЭ. If Musk can get his primary dogma into the government, that is the goal of everything is cost reduction, and federal staffs are rewarded for spending less, the fiasco could slow down. Remember that SSA payments will never disappear, but decline as available funds decline.

That assumes that SSA does not fall victim to when TSHTF.
