I don’t know about you, but I was thrilled to hear Joe Biden tell America — with a faraway gleam in those ol’ blue Konstantin Chernenko eyes — that he’s expecting to run for a second term. The prospect must engross him, so effervescent was his campaign of 2020! Like all presidents, he’s learning on-the-job, but he’s already lapping Franklin Roosevelt in the hundred-day dash of executive action, showing those wicked CCP envoys who’s boss (why, they are, of course), and turning the depraved white supremacist state of Texas into a vibrant Honduras del Norte. As Mr. Biden would say, anyway… I’ve gone on too long about that….
Meanwhile, from offstage you could hear the crunch of his handlers chewing their Xanax, knowing that the game was a brain-fart away from disaster. Well, he only wandered away from the podium one time, and he dutifully followed the script. In fact, the script was right there in his hand the entire white-knuckle hour of this debut press conference, and he often appeared to be reading straight off the page. I’m sure he was making a funny when he said he came to the Senate 120 years ago. (Remember the battle over Wm. H Taft’s nomination to be Territorial Governor of the Philippines? And how, in the hearings, then-freshman Senator Ol’ Joe B produced three New Haven doxies who testified about Taft’s “abnormal appetites” during the nominee’s years at Yale?)
Traditionally, presidential press conferences are opportunities to inform the nation where things stand, and to send signals to the other nations (“friend and foe alike” as JFK used to say) about America’s intentions, especially in the nuclear age, with the world so nervously on edge. What did Americans learn from Mr. Biden’s debut? Mainly that an old dog can do some old tricks, follow a script, play the politician, fill a suit, run his mouth, and go through the motions — fulfilling people’s cynical expectation that some trip is being laid on them. Foreign observers will probably note that the executive branch is being run by a politburo more secretive even than the old gang who ran the USSR. No one in this country seems to notice.
Mr. Biden’s real job is as a walking MaxWriter© signature machine, ready to sit down and serve whenever Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer send another 1000-plus-page bundle of legislation to the White House, designed to ratchet up the government’s despotic power over everyday life in order to “solve the problems” of free enterprise, free elections, and free speech with free money and hyper-complexity.
Coming up soon, for instance: HR1, the “For the People [ha!] Act,” designed to maximally enable election fraud by enrolling as many live bodies as possible to vote with no chance of verifying their identities, age, place of residence, or citizenship. The act would certainly introduce many new layers of chaos and delay in ascertaining election results. It would also take away the states’ constitutional duty to fashion their own election requirements and, in the process, further erode the legitimacy of the federal government and give many states more reason to oppose and nullify it, or even secede from it — meaning, another step toward that looming civil war 2.0.
One strange exchange in the press conference especially stood out [from the official White House transcript]:
Q: [Janet Rodriguez, Univision] Thank you, Mr. President. We, too, have been reporting at the border. And just like Cecilia, we ran into a pair of siblings who came in on Monday, who were detained by CBP — had the phone number for their mother who lives in the U.S. We have contacted the mother. That’s the only way they know her kids are here because CBP, today, Thursday, has not contacted that mother. So, when can we expect your promise of things getting better with contacting and expediency and processing?
THE PRESIDENT: Well, they’re already getting better, but they’re going to get real — they’ll get a whole hell of lot better real quick, or we’re going to hear of some people leaving, okay?
Did you catch that? The siblings’ mother lives in the USA? How did she get here and when? Is she here legally? Why were these children living in another country, away from their mother, and for how long? Why did the mother abandon her children in the country she left? Did anybody notice that this story doesn’t add up?

I suspect that our betters who really run things have known for some time that they’re going to have to implement some very bad and unpopular things soon to maintain their status and the white supremacist narrative has been crafted so they’ll have a boogeyman to blame for any pushback or unrest that will inevitably result. This is a really bad thing. Without a common culture, there is no nation. Ask yourself, why should the United States exist? It was a beacon of hope for the world after WW2, caring about the rest of the world through economical recovery plans in Europe and Asia.
The elite in other nations grew with US help through the end of the 20 th century. Like here, they generated their load of human waste, discarded, old, unskilled and destitute. After a while, these folks overwhelmed the capabilities of their countries to employ them productively. You can name them, Cuba, China, Viet Nam, the rest of SE Asia, India, Latin America, Venezuela, Russia, the Middle East. In turn each of these areas collapsed and needed to offload these destitute, useless people.
Now, who would be stupid enough to volunteer to take in all these excess people that have little to offer. Duh!
That is what the USA, and some countries in Europe have become. Cesspools of humanity, dumping grounds for other nations who become stronger by ridding themselves of these folks and they know it weakens us by taking on way too much of the world’s poverty class. No wonder we are almost 30 trillion in debt, we have been suckered into babysitting the hordes of economically worthless people from all over the world.

Today with us circling the drain, economically, it is a fricking disaster. The world that matters is about to destroy the US and then Russia with the new leader to be China.
We did it to ourselves. The number one enemy to the future of the US is the Deep State. Get used to that, it is already too late. In a democracy, the majority rules, our majority is now from outside the country.

50+ years since the Civil Rights movement, even longer for the feminism movement and the black community is doing worse by every available measure and women are nowhere near their representative population as far as leadership and career positions go. The systemic-racism/misogyny explanation is just a lazy effort to ignore the other possible explanations. It’s also a lot easier for very dumb people to understand and repeat.
Many of them like to take time off and have kids. So they don’t advance as quickly or as much. It’s called human life. Careerism for all is simply desperate and degenerate.
This is going to cause shrieks of outrage, but for the most part, women simply don’t have the right stuff to compete in a system designed by men for men. Our very brains are wired differently and our physical prowess is paltry in comparison, and if you’ve ever had a man chase you down and use his strength against you, you would know that. Not all of the affirmative action in the world can change physiology, and a leg up from the government is the only thing that permitted women to make whatever advances they have made. We’d have never made it this far on our own. It’s not that there aren’t high achievers among us. There always have been, but they are the exception, not the rule.
Look what fifty years of requiring black women to raise their families without a man is residence has gotten us. I might point out that the supremacy of your own race is always paramount. The Chinese despise Caucasians and consider us quite inferior.

It’s due to a higher percentage of women in “nurturing jobs” (teacher.nurse, librarian) and a higher percentage of men in science, engineering, finance.
Feminists demand equal pay for equal education levels, not equal work. They refuse to recognize that the marketplace rewards some fields more than others. This reality has always been known. If you want to be a librarian, you can’t expect the pay of a chemical engineer.
It reminds me of AOC demanding that the USA professional women soccer players get paid as much as the men. The fact that the revenue their games generate is less than one tenth of the men’s team, is not relevant to a true wokester.

The questions at the end about the mother are simply too rational and logical for our post-modern world to understand. They paid me my normal day’s pay, as if I’d been at work, plus £25 (it was a while ago) for 6am till 10pm. It was the election that gave us Maggie Thatcher, if I recall. I don’t think they were short of volunteers, as it got people out of the office for a day, although was 16 hours! The voting hours aren’t as long for local elections, so that would be more bearable maybe.
That would have been 1979 and I think the temp job paid me £2500 p.a., so less than £10/day before tax. So £25 was worth the boredom!

I suspect in your constituencies, there are PLENTY of polling places. I recall being in England in 1987. The people we were staying with went off to vote, and we went for the walk. The nearest place was 200 yards down the road (this was in semi-rural Surrey), and there were two more on the other side of the railway line before we got to the shopping center, where there was yet another.
From what I’ve been reading about these new voting regulations (viz. Georgia), there will be FEWER places than ever in the ‘Democrat’ (read black) areas, along with the 5 pm closing? WTF? Most working people don’t get off till 5 pm or later, and postal or early voting is also being clamped down on. It really couldn’t be any plainer than this is active voter suppression.

I have indeed, as a post-60, been offered the vaxx, and after proper consideration (which I’ll grant you many people have not undertaken to the same extent as myself) I decided to take it.
I do not require or wish anyone else to take it, and I do not require or wish anyone else to show a certificate to be anywhere that I am, because I consider that I have taken what precautions I can (or will have if we don’t run out of vaccine before I get my second dose), and I consider that both vaccine-takers and vaccine refuseniks have made their choices and should then live by them and shut up about it, so that we can all go to the pub, restaurant or anywhere else, sans certificate, and get on with our lives.
If we were but allowed to do so. We are currently in a middling phase where most people are not fully vaccinated (I think only about 2.5m have had the second dose) because of the way the health authorities have decided to do it. Real-world observation (as opposed to Pharma trials) has shown even one shot to be over 80% effective, so I’m happy with even that.
My only proviso, as I have stated before (and which got me into an involved to-and-fro with Akmofo, is that it is not up to me – or indeed to the English/Scottish/Welsh or N. Irish authorities – to say what restrictions other sovereign countries are entitled to put on people arriving in their country from the UK.

In whose other words? Certainly not mine. Georgia already requires a picture ID in order to register, receive a ballot, and to actually vote.
I’m not hugely opposed to voter ID – but it is open to abuse by partisan officials … in some states a student ID was not permitted. There are no reasons not to allow a student ID – unless your objective to is suppress the young progressive vote.
An ID only needs to establish that you are the named person on the card – it is not doing the job of finding your address, and whether you are registered to vote in that state-county … the roll should do that.

I have no problem with ensuring the probity of every vote – what I object to (on “democracy” grounds, not Democratic ones) are obvious and egregious steps to suppress minority and inner-city votes – that is bulldust. Fewer booths, fewer days, fewer hours, roll-purging, etc.
There was some turkey in some state who tried to argue that there should be no voting on Sunday (the “Lord’s Day”) – can you believe it? I won’t even bother with the obvious rebuttals.
I agree that every mail-in vote should be verifiable – with the outside envelope containing all relevant identification material, and a signed declaration.
Ballot harvesting I have less of a drama with – firstly because if done well, then it is “pro-democracy” (giving people in aged care, or immobile at home, etc, the opportunity to cast a vote), secondly, it is pretty hard to detect, and thirdly, I expect both major parties do it in equal measure, so any shenanigans should equal themselves out.

I recently watched an interview with Bjorn Lomborg, who wrote the book, the Skeptical Environmentalist. It was good. Lomborg’s argument is that climate change does exist, but it is not the ‘existential threat’ that people like Biden says in his speeches.

Now, your reading assignment for today is to read about the ENTHUSIASTIC mass suicide, pretty much out of the blue, of the Xhosa people of Southern Africa. On the word of one young girl who claimed she had a “vision” an entire race of people slaughtered all of their livestock and burned all of their crops. Because two girls told them it was the only way they could be saved and bring about a Utopia, and if they didn’t do this, they would be destroyed along with the entire world.
Sound familiar? Read up. Excerpt below. Be warned, this author tries to blame this diabolical act on Christianity somehow, and paint is as a protest against Christian proselytism. It was a purely pagan manifestation of evil – if any these people actually saw anything preternatural, it was demonic. The white Christians BEGGED the Xhosa to not do this evil and insane thing. I think you will be struck by the similarities to what is happening now – even down to the terminology… “New World” Order.
One morning in 1856, a fifteen year old Xhosa girl named Nongqawuse went with another girl to scare birds from her uncle’s crops in the fields by the sea at the Gxarha river mouth in the present day Wild Coast area of South Africa.
When she returned she said that she had seen a man, who had told her that ‘The whole community would rise from the dead; that all cattle now living must be slaughtered’. The girls returned home and told their families what had happened but they were not believed. Later, however, when Nongqawuse described one of the men, her uncle Mhalakaza, himself a diviner, recognised the description as that of his dead brother, and became convinced she was telling the truth.
As a result, between April 1856 and June 1857, the various sections of the Xhosa people of the Eastern Cape and the Transkei slaughtered almost all their enormous stocks of cattle and deliberately killed their crops. This apocalyptic event, rather than being some kind of ‘mass suicide’s described by early colonial historians, was actually the earliest example of a mass ‘passive resistance’ movement in South Africa. The themes and symbols of the Cattle-Killing can be found in the various resistance movements of South Africa right into the modern era.
Nongqawuse and Mhalakaza said that those who had appeared to them were the spirits of their dead ancestors, who had come back to life in order to bring the Xhosa nation back to its former glory and to ‘render the Xhosa the assistance they required in order to drive the white man out of the land’.
A few days later Mhalakaza met with the spirits himself, and said that all the dead of the Xhosa nation would arise again, that they would come up out of the sea, bringing with them new and uncontaminated cattle, along with ‘sheep, goats, dogs, fowls and every other animal that was wanted, and all clothes and everything they could wish for to eat. . . and all kinds of things for their houses.’ The cattle, said Nongqawuse, were at present in underground caverns waiting to arise and start a new world for the purified Xhosa people. On the day of their coming, she promised, ‘the blind would see, the deaf would hear, cripples would walk, and the whole Xhosa nation would arise from the dead’ and begin a golden age without disease, death or misfortune.
As word of the prophecies grew, the Xhosa paramount chief, Sarhili, sent emissaries to the Gxarha river mouth to investigate the prophecies. They did not actually meet the strangers, but returned home convinced of the truth of the prophecies and immediately began killing their cattle. Sarhili then sent two of his councillors to notify the chiefs under British jurisdiction that they must sacrifice their ‘bewitched’ cattle. Once Sarhili had come out in support, the movement gained enormous momentum.
But not all the Xhosa killed their cattle. Many refused to believe the truth of the prophecies and refused to waste their corn and neglect their gardens. By the end of 1856, so many cattle had been killed that the adherents of the movement had gone too far to turn back. Searching for a reason why the dead had not been resurrected as the prophecies promised, they blamed the ‘selfish’ actions of the ‘Unbelievers’ in preserving their cattle.
As the Cattle-Killing frenzy swept Xhosaland, rumours flew. The most striking of these was that the ‘New People’ foretold by Nongqawuse were in some way connected to the Russians, against whom the British were currently fighting -and being defeated -in the Crimean War. The Russians were therefore believed to be black, and coming over the sea to liberate the Xhosa and drive the whites into the sea, whereupon a new Utopia for the nation would begin. The individual magistrates who were stationed with chiefs under Governor Grey’s system tried to persuade the chiefs of the foolishness of slaughtering their cattle, but with little success.
As hunger set in, the farms of the unbelievers were plundered and rage against them mounted. Blamed for the destitution around them, and denied any help from the colonial government, they became outcasts, scarcely any better off than the Believers.
By February 1857 , starvation and destitution was widespread. No definite date had as yet been set for the beginning of the New World, and so many cattle had been killed there was no sense in keeping those that remained alive.
Sarhili visited the Gxarha river mouth, and spoke with Nongqawuse and Mhalakaza for a long time. When he returned, he announced that the New World would begin in eight days. On the eighth day the sun would rise blood-red, before setting again, there would be a huge Thunderstorm, and then “The dead would arise”. During the next eight days the Cattle- Killing rose to a climax. The Xhosa historian Gqoba reported that on the eighth day – ” The sun rose just like any other sun. The Believers withdrew into their houses all day, fastened tightly behind their doors, peeping outside occasionally through little holes in their dwellings until the sun disappeared. . . “
The estimated figure of those who died as result of the cattle-killing stands at 40,000. In addition, the Governor of the Cape instigated a massive programme of labour ‘recruitment’ which led to thousands of Xhosa being transported across the border into Cape Colony. Magistrates were instructed only to give food and relief to those who were willing to be contracted for labour in the colony. Those who agreed were obliged to sign a term of agreement whereby they expressed their willingness to work anywhere in Cape Colony for any wage that was offered.
Yoho: And when the slaughter of cattle and corn didn’t seem to be working the dupes turned their wrath on the disbelievers – those who hadn’t killed their cattle. I don’t think that people should have to be vaccinated if they don’t want to be, or treated as a pariah either if they aren’t. If I were 30, I wouldn’t be getting it myself, most likely. That was the Pfizer jab, OG – I think it was either £70 or £80 I heard. It’s five times more expensive than Astra-Zenica, as far as I know, and it has higher logistical costs because it has to be kept at an extremely low temperature until a few days before it’s used (and each vial contains more than one dose so you need to use all the doses within a few hours to not throw money down the sink).
Astra Zenica has promised to supply their vaccine at cost until the pandemic has died down. Maybe others are doing something similar? And I think they’re all helping with the Covax initiative to help poorer countries get supplies.

Indeed, but that works both ways. I recall, some time ago, another experiment was undertaken, this time without our knowledge. Contented herbivores were fed their own brains and we got BSE. A small number of people got new-variant CJD. But there were fears that there would be millions of us walking around with spongiform brains because we’d possibly eaten mechanically recovered meat (ugh!) before finding out about the ingredients of new-age cattle feed.
It didn’t happen. A few people did get it and it was obviously horrible for them and their families. But the talk about what this vaccine is going to do reminds me of that.
And I think we’ll be getting feudalism/neo-feudalism anyway, but sans hi-tech, in due course.
BTW, talking of Saskatchewan, my husband worked a spell in a healthcare clinic in a place called Rabbit Lake several decades ago. I’ve looked it up on google maps and it seems to have a couple of streets, a grain silo, a shop and a church. And not so much as a bump in the road where you could practise a hill start for your driving test! It’s difficult to imagine places that flat exist when you come from where I am.

You’re missing the point.
It’s not that anyone is annoyed that many are choosing the vaccine.
It’s that we already know that if (let’s be honest, when) things don’t change for the better, or go straight south, those with the vaccine *will* blame those that didn’t vaccinate for the world’s problems, whatever they may be.
I already see it in my life.
Friends we want to get together with, not even subtly asking if we’ve been vaccinated. That means no visit forthcoming. Also means they don’t understand HIPAA laws and why they’re there.
We know that the “your body, your choice” doctrine, even if granted by those who choose to say “Nay”, will not be returned by the majority holding the other view.
Well I can’t speak for how people behave over your way, MrMango, but I don’t see that kind of mentality around me. That’s all I can say. I gather I’m 80% protected already with dose 1 and I’m pretty happy with that. I’ve mentioned already my friends who’ve recently lost people close to them who just missed the vaccine programme, so I feel doubly blessed that I didn’t.
I happen to know that my remaining brother and his wife are vaccinated (both 70) and their older son too, who is 40-something but epileptic so at risk from Covid. And my late brother’s wife also told me she’s had it – i didn’t ask her.
Beyond that i won’t be asking anyone as it’s none of my business and I have no reason to want to know. I’m not even curious.f
Regarding things going south or not getting any better, I’m pleased that our daily death rate has plummeted from 1820 towards the end of January to, I think, 20-something now. So I’m definitely looking forward to things getting better. Domestically at least, for now.

They have in the two WhatsApp groups I’m in (old school classmates and student friends (all of whom live hundreds of miles away) but not overduly, and it’s understandable in the group that’s lost three people to Covid recently. But none of them has mentioned other people’s vaccine status. They’re all itching to get moving again. Of my local buddies I only know the vaxx status of one and will now make a deliberate effort not to bring the subject up myself with the others.
My hairdresser recently sent me a text to say she’s opening up again soon and would I like an appointment – she didn’t ask me if I was vaccinated and it never occurred to me to ask if she was. And if she brings up the subject – or anyone else does, for that matter – I’ll put in my tuppence-worth in the same vein as what I’ve been saying to you. I’m planning to write to my MP and MSP too.
Fellow dog walkers I chat to regularly don’t bring it up either – and none of them are masked, in case you’re wondering!

It strikes me, given OG’s wife’s issues, that passing on my views to my hairdresser might be a good way to go, given hairdressers are superspreaders of the zeitgeist by default if not by choice!
Mine is nice and very sensible. She’s a big girl, though, so it wouldn’t surprise me if she gets the vaxx once they get down to the 40s, since she’d be at risk from Covid. Her business (both senses).

Hairdressers are indeed at the center of all society, not just in personal contact, but mainly because they have to chit chat for 20-30 minutes with everyone that comes through…therefore they probably hear the same topics all day everyday and have to pretend it’s a fresh conversation to make good company.

It is severe. But is it even enforced? I went to Norwich for a funeral during lockdown in May, and we went over to Fife in November’s ‘tier 4’ to adopt another greyhound. In neither case did I see anyone likely to ask me where I was going or why. That strikes me as a request as much as a regulation. And I admit if everyone had done it that wouldn’t have been good, but in both cases we complied by wearing masks and generally avoiding getting up close and personal, except for a farewell hug to my unfortunate sister-in-law.
But I don’t know what ‘under the pretext of the vaccine’ means in this context. Once everyone has had the opportunity to be vaccinated if they want to, pretexts disappear and there’s no excuse for not getting back to business, in my view.
My personal feeling is that it’s difficult to remain scared of something forever, and people will find something else to worry about. But if the vaxx continues to do me no harm, as it has so far (and as with the flu jab in the four or five years that I’ve had it), I won’t have any qualms about keeping it up to date, as appropriate. But I don’t want you to have it.

I do think there will be issues with international travel, especially since countries are having different experiences infection-wise, but besides that I don’t think two-tier society is inevitable, even if that makes me over-optimistic.
Brits have never even had ID cards. I can’t see myself carrying a vaccine card around (didn’t get one with dose 1!).

Seems to be the fan that stopped working, not the hard drive failing. i don’t want to continue using it anyway, so I’m not going to spend money fixing it. I don’t suppose anyone wants old desktops any more for parts, although I hate chucking things out.
Re the moral of the story, I bought one of those ‘Passport’ external hard drives for automatic back-up and it just stopped working after a couple of years. I put everything on a flash drive about 15 months ago to transfer to my laptop but just didn’t get round to the total changeover so lost the last year or so.

OG, you asked if I thought the situation in the Suez canal was deliberate or accidental. It’s hard to say. I was a QM and qualified helmsman on a DDG and Fast Frigate, 4500 tons and 3000 tons respectively. Even ships of that size weren’t easy to handle in tight spots and could get away from you pretty quick. The container ship in question is massive, a beast, larger than the largest US Carrier or the Titanic. So I would guess this is a catastrophic accident.

Where am I here? It’s probably a good question for everyone at certain points you know. Is Joe really an unfortunate victim of dementia and elder abuse?
