Baluchitherium. Gone but not forgotten.
The Covid-19 virus itself didn’t run the United States into a ditch but it exposed the weakness and rot in the nation’s drive-train, and now all of us passengers on that disabled bus must decide whether to stay helplessly inside the smoldering wreckage arguing over who’s to blame, or begin a long, uncertain march down the road on our own two feet to a place of new arrangements.
In 1918, the country was lashed by a far deadlier pandemic disease at the same time it was fighting a world war, and daily life barely missed a step. The economy then was emphatically one of production, not the mere consumption of things made elsewhere in the world (exchanged for US IOUs), nor of tanning parlors, nail salons, streaming services, and Pilates studios. The economy was a mix of large, medium, and small enterprises, not just floundering giants, especially in the retail commerce of goods. We lived distributed in towns, cities not-yet-overgrown, and a distinctly rural landscape devoted to rural activities — not the vast demolition derby of entropic suburbia that has no future as a human habitat. Banking was only five percent of the economy, not the bloated matrix of rackets now swollen to more than forty percent of so-called GDP. Government at the federal and state levels was miniscule compared to the suffocating, parasitic leviathan it is now.
What happened? Like Hemingway’s old quip about a man going broke slowly and then all-at-once, we allowed everything in American life to creep into hapless giantism too cumbersome to adapt to new conditions, and suddenly conditions have changed. And now it’s all coming apart: the dying chain stores, the giant zombie companies that can only exist by borrowing money to buy back their own stocks, the auto-makers who have run out of lending schemes for non-creditworthy customers, the shale oil fracking companies that could never make a red cent, the agri-biz farmers grown morbidly obese on a diet of credit and government subsidies (just like their end-customers grew obese on engineered snack-foods), the Wall Street lords of financialization hypothecating fortunes by leveraging the stripped assets of everything not nailed down from sea to shining sea, the swelling underclass conditioned to helplessness, addiction, and vice, the inescapable ambient tyranny of media hype, propaganda, and disinformation, and, of course, the catastrophe that government has become.
Get this: none of these things now wobbling and staggering will be resurrected. They’re all going extinct, like the Baluchitherium of the Oligocene. To keep propping them up — as the Federal Reserve sedulously props up financial markets — will only promote the illusion that we don’t have to move on and conduct daily human life differently. A worldwide contraction was already underway before Covid-19 stepped onstage. The contraction was sending a very loud and clear message: gigantism went as far as it could go and now it’s up to the smaller and nimbler to carry on. Beware the promises of the sclerotic authorities asking you to remain in thrall to them — and dependent on them.
Expect these authorities to screw up even the next big exercise in their own franchise: the 2020 election. It will be the climax to a season of political hysteria and will complete the chapter of our history that left us on that smoldering big bus in the ditch. The scramble away from that disaster scene will be frightful and desperate. No matter who ends up in control of the government — or pretends to be — the same forces of contraction and decomplexifying will actually rule and you will have to act accordingly.
Many people will seek to escape the places they live now to find new homes and livelihoods elsewhere. These demographic movements are already underway. New York City is hemorrhaging much of its tax base as the wealthy flee, Chicago too, and the whole state of California. These places will be overwhelmed by functional bankruptcy, even if legal legerdemain allows them to avoid declaring it. Other states, counties and municipalities — including many suburban blobs — will also founder, meaning all the usual support systems and safety nets vanish. Many supply chains will break. Money may either be scarce or worthless, which are two ways of going broke.
Right now, start planning where you might go and what you can do. The turmoil will be filled with opportunity to find ways to be useful to other people, to devise work-arounds for ruptured systems and relationships, in getting food to people, making things they need, distributing them, fixing things that are broken where possible, and moving people and stuff from point A to point B. There will be plenty of work for people who are willing to do it. Keep in mind that it’s entirely up to you to make good choices.
Don’t despair, and if you find yourself veering toward it, get over yourself. It’s just part of becoming stronger than you thought you could be, and the times will require it of you anyway. The offices that gave out brownie points for avouched victimhood will also be shutting down. Won’t that be a relief? Welcome to the joyful illumination that life is difficult for everybody. 2 Inequality has been a subject for study for many decades in economics. Inequality – of net household wealth – increased significantly during the reign of Saint Barry Soetoro. Go to the Pew Trust research on wealth inequality. Saint Soetoro was all talk, no substance. Again, you’re out of your depth.
3. “Rich people are not paying taxes.” Total BS. Go to the Statistics of Income as published annually by the IRS for the US Dept. of Treasury. The share of taxes paid by the top 1% of taxpayers is enormous, all out of proportion to their share of annual US pre-tax income. Again, your pat phrases leave you holding a bag of dog s#@t lies.

As for resources–shabberbanks, you might want to expand your view of taxes–consider subsidies. The wealthy pay the most taxes, yes, but they also have most of the wealth and the biggest chunk of income in this country, so that should not come as a surprise to you. However, if the taxes are so ruinous as you want us to believe, you might want to explain why the wealthier keep getting more and more wealthy. Hard work? Blaming the calamity that has been on the make for a few generations now on the orange man seems silly to me. The problems in this land are far larger than a single unlikely chief executive and his greatest faults are shown in his inability to change course, not his inability to maintain it.
His few good ideas were the ones which were a large departure from business as usual in the post-WW2 era and they were the ones most kneecapped by the power centers and administrators.

That dream was ever impossible, I fear. The Union was conceived as a thing of necessity- 13 separate entities would have fallen to the Crown one by one, united there was a chance for independence, and was made ‘more perfect’ through war, purchase, conquest, and time.
There may have been a chance, in a brief moment, after the door to the outside world was shut in the 20s- to allow for greater unity and the slow dissipation of the Anglo/ethnic divide that had arisen due largely to the mass influx of Gilded Age cheap labor immigrants after the troubles of the 1860s but that chance was thrown away in a new push for global empire and elite betrayal of the general welfare in pursuit of selfish gain.
Even then, the vision was never quite shared. Who’s city on a hill? What vision? The vision of Jefferson’s yeoman farmers? The ‘melting pot’ of industrial age propaganda? Multiculturalism and universal tolerance?
Much of our problem is that this is a culture that refuses to accept limits. It lacks humility. Part of humility is respecting those without, on the far side of the boundary, but another part is respecting those within- acknowledging that our resources and the commonweal are not infinite things and that scarcity requires hard choices.
As we have refused the limits, the limits will now punish us dearly.

If he had applied his own principles in Europe, there would have been no WW2, no Iron Curtain, no Balkan wars of the 1990s, no European Union and no Great Replacement.

Strongly disagree on these 2 points, RB. Heirloom seeds are quite available to those who look. I think you might be thinking about seed used by mega farmers for monocropping. There you’d have a point. The problem there is that megafarming is unsustainable and won’t be part of the upcoming WMBH following SHTF. Jim has always been an advocate for downsizing, and having a store of heirloom seeds for ones own household garden is conducive to that.
My own experience in trying to grow as much of my household’s food as possible is that gardening has a steep learning curve, and one’s location in the country is of paramount importance to deciding what to grow and when. Glad I started years ago and can now benefit from my many mistakes. Even though it is currently unnecessary, I try to collect seeds every year from as many crops as I can (seeds won’t be as available in TWMBH:-))

People are very misinformed on NZ. Just a couple of posts ago, majella was making the claim that NZ ran on 90% hydro power.
In fact NZ gets only 11% of its power from hydro. 70% of its primary energy comes from oil and oil products.
But of course even the 70% figure is meaningful only as long as the entire system is working. Once the oil stops – or gets too expensive, or demand for it is killed off – then the whole system dies. It isn’t as if the 11% of energy that is hydro-derived will continue to be supplied. Because it is a system. It all works together.
So no, NZ is not bug-out island. It is not going to be a safe place.

There are a number of things that were available to the mujahadeen – and classically, to any successful guerilla movement – that would not be available to the people of the United States.

So, the Soviets flat out killed 8% of the population. Even though they styled themselves as liberators and so had to act with relative restraint.
Genocides are different. Look at Pol Pot or the Holodomor or the 1965 anticommunist action in Indonesia. When the goal is “Kill the farmer. Kill the Boer.” or “White Lives Don’t Matter”, and that is government policy, don’t expect the conflict to look like a guerilla way. There is no reason to hold back. In fact, it is against policy. So exterminations look different.
This is a very important point because – as is well known – guerilla movements do not have to win wars. That is not the goal. They only have to survive until the opposition gives up.

I voted with my feet a few months back and made it out of California just in time. How they are going to give free health care to illegal immigrants, reparations and the other insanity programs they have ready to go is beyond me. Especially now that a million or so of its wealthier citizens have fled and a third of its budget has vanished.
I imagine if you go back to LA in ten years it will look like the set of Blade Runner. The teacher’s union who you’d think would be capable of thinking, apparently aren’t. They presented the city with a list of demands before they would go back to work that included such gems as:

He just ordered school districts in about 22 counties to keep their schools closed in the Fall. But the Orange County Board of Education just voted to have the schools open (I think the recommendation echoed that of the American Association of Pediatrics: No masks and no social distancing).

They had an efficient agricultural system, apparently. The original slaves in ancient Rome were white Slavs—hence the term “slavery” Even Africans had slaves. The enslavement of Africans in the U.S. was a pernicious example of slavery, but there really isn’t anything that shocking or surprising about it, from a global historical perspective. This inconvenient truth riles a lot of people, understandably. A good book on the subject of fossil fuels and slavery is “The Energy of Slaves” by Andrew Nikiforuk. I realize I’ve simplified the subject here, but really….racism, slave reparations—-we’ve really got more pressing issues to contend with at the moment. Like, how the hell are we going to feed and shelter ourselves in the years to come.

Some weeks back Jim Sinclair proposed that the Covid-19 event was fortuitous in that it halted the unraveling of the financial system (repo crisis). Interest rates were threatening to rise beyond control (IOW, financial system collapse) owing to the demand for loans/money. There are two ways to address this: added liquidity or loan demand destruction. The former was in process with no end in sight, which is another description of financial system collapse (choose your poison: infinitely high interest rates or worthless currency). Covid-19 occurred at just the proper moment to shut down demand for money and preserve — for the moment — the world financial system.
Sinclair is very careful to clarify that he is not suggesting anything other than a random, fortuitous event, and that the virus is real, and deadly for certain at-risk groups.
Reading between the lines I think Sinclair is being coy, but we will never know the truth. At the moment, it is our reality whether we choose to believe in it or not.

Well, we have Federal government employees “detaining” people without probable cause up in Portland. “Honestly, it just a Terry Stop!!!” Cities have not burned to the ground. White Americans seem more aware that racism is a BIG problem in this country, and the President continues to say that COVID is not a big deal, and it is time to take control of pesky statistics that just make people uncomfortable. It is looking more and more likely that the COVID “Scare” is not a scare, but a real problem. I want to point out that COVID would have likely been WORSE than the Spanish Flu. Look at the advances in epidemiology and medicine we have made over the last hundred years that have kept people who would otherwise have died, alive. We are a more complex society, but you would have to admit that our specialisation has also made us a richer one as well (if we don’t count the environmental damage we have been doing). We have all the mod cons our ancestors had and much more besides–it is also a more complex society, to be sure; that can make us more fragile and I agree that we feel that way today.
The President is of a mindset that says that we must support the wealthy, and his party agrees with him. And you want him to be in charge in 2021? You like his faux populism that benefits the wealthy, and says poor folks–you are on your own! Why? Because the alternative is so much worse? OK, opinions will vary on that!
So, I get the pivot back to your bread and butter issues of the approaching collapse of society. I have a lot of sympathy for that position, but it has not fundamentally changed in the 15 years that I have been reading you. You are right–we need a simpler and less materially oriented life in order to not trash ourselves and the biosphere of the planet we rely on. I agree with you–we either do this voluntarily or it will be done for us. I think the jury is out on that one. The capitalist system that uses resources unsustainably and that you at times defend is also a part of this problem. It feeds the engine leading to this outcome you speak of. President Trump will not help us avoid that bad outcome–he will make it more likely. The President champions inequality and the engines of that inequality, and the major problem you point to is caused by inequality and a blind indifference to the damage we cause ourselves and others, human and non-human, by our actions. Economists call those impacts externalities–they can be good and/or bad. When we benefit by not paying the true costs of our actions, we free ride on those who do bear the costs. And we have allowed ourselves to have a free ride at the expense of our future generations.
So, one ray of sunshine to throw into the mix: Everywhere and always we see the same thing–as income increases, beyond a certain threshold, fertility begins to fall, and populations start to stabilise and decrease. The demographic shift is a real phenomenon and explainable. As the opportunity cost of having kids goes up, the number women have goes down. We substitute away from kids as they get more expensive. Less people, less demand for resources. If we get less inequality and more social cohesion, more mutually held social capital used to do things that help us all we can avoid the worst that you see with the seer’s gaze. E.g., decent public transport, way less pollution, etc.
I do have a degree of optimism here.Does society have to collapse or can it be transformed? We could be the Western Roman Empire that collapsed upon itself, or any one of the Chinese dynasties that ran its course into ruin; or the Maya for that matter. We face serious challenges and some serious inertia. But, we could also be like the Byzantine Empire–it was on the verge of destruction more than once, but survived against tremendous odds, though it eventually fell after a thousand year, small and worn out. But its capacity to reinvent itself delayed that outcome, due to the power of its people, its leaders, and its institutions to make necessary changes, for a thousand years. These things may be lacking in us and this could be the “three strikes and you’re out” for us. Do we all have to share your pessimism though? I am amazed by the ability of Americans to reinvent themselves in the face of necessity. We might fail this situation, but that outcome is not written in stone, Mr. Kunstler.

The entire developed world, North America, Europe, Russia, the Far East is well below replacement level. For all of those countries, overpopulation is not an issue. Underpopulation is.
There is also a long list of other countries (that may surprise many) who are also below: Brazil, Iran, Vietnam, Turkey, Columbia etc. An awful lot are barely above: India, Mexico, Indonesia, Argentina etc, and fertility rates just keep falling.
Solving overpopulation is basically sit on your hands and do nothing and wait for ever smaller next generations. If only all problems were that easy to solve.

Despite being the most fertile land in the world with a superlative growing season, it still had occasional famines and the people lived on the edge of having adequate daily calories. This was the case even into the 1960s.
Today, the population of Java is 140 million.
So what happens when the fertilizers and water pumps go away and they have to go back to growing just one low-yield season of rice a year instead of three and four high-yield seasons?
There is no underpopulation problem anywhere in the world.

Then, the indonesian population will start going down. Several countries like Japan are already seeing their population go down. European countries would start to see it as well, if they weren’t taking in so much excess population from the third world. For the developped world, underpopulation is a concern.

In Indonesia, as is the case throughout Asia, there is usually one rain-fed rice-growing season. If there are to be two or even three seasons, water has to be pumped onto the paddy with pumps that use small petrol-driven engines.
Everywhere you go in Asia you can see the small huts – usually made of bamboo – that house these pumps. On a bus journey of a few days, you will see thousands upon thouands of them.
If petrol is too expensive or otherwise unavailable, no water is pumped. Thus no crops are grown. Thereby, large parts of the population, billions in fact, face famine and starve.

How do you explain the fact that those who are complaining the most are receiving a larger share of the national wealth and opportunities than they ever have before?
Blacks are 13% of the US population but (in 2014) made up 18.37% of the federal workforce.
It would be interesting to see what that percentage is today but in any case, this does not seem like the condition of an oppressed minority. In fact. I am sure that their economic condition has been improving every year for decades.
Of course, blacks do commit disproportionate amounts of crime and do not at all like to be punished for that and always cry “unfair!” when caught at their hijinks, but that has been the case since Reconstruction. Nothing new about that.

Contagious or not is not the issue and you know that perfectly well0. The issue is public policy and the price/cost of a human life.
All polities at all times must make policies that at least implicitly make some calculation of the value of a human life relative to the socio-economic value of all of its activities.
We do not as a society have endless resources. It is not true that every human life has an infinite value.
We have to make decisions on these issues. Dopey people like to pretend that we don’t, but we do.
It would be possible to make the mining and timber industries much safer than they are. They take lives and cause injuries every year. But to make these industries perfectly safe would also be to make them uneconomic for human employment.
Men in those industries take the risks because they need the pay packet.
Your pretense that the only issue is lives while the economy is not to be considered is too childish to be taken seriously.
Of course contagion is the issue. You haven’t been reading my posts. I’ve pointed out months ago that this is a difficult balancing act between shutdowns, health, and the economy.

The obvious, very obvious conclusion is that all the experts do not have a clue what is spreading this crud. I heard a cardiologist recently state that this is not a respiratory issue, it is oral fecal, like polio. Is he right? With the data currently present, he sure could be. But territories have been cut politically now and everyone is going to support their pet theory.
My idea is that the bug spreads by any way it infects a body, which is everywhere. Virus expels from the nose, mouth, eyes, urine, stool, sweat, blood, semen, any fluid expelled by the body’s metabolism. Self discipline with avoiding contact with body fluids in any form from an infected individual is paramount in avoiding infection.
Now, this means extraordinary changes in the way humans interact. All mammals like to touch. Us too. So what is being asked is very difficult, especially for young people who are not very disciplined.
Avoid contact with Body fluids from any source, because We cannot tell if another human is contaminated. Not an easy situation.
In nursing, when HIV started, the answer was treat everyone, any patient, as though they had AIDS. PPE, sharps care, isolation were used strictly.
The public needs to realize that the same discipline is required as no one knows who has or has had this crud.
Distancing, masks for droplet control, putting toilet seats down before flushing, home and car isolation and cleanliness, washing hands after any activity that contamination is an issue, trying not to touch faces, not using public restrooms unless necessary, anything allowing cross contamination from another person.
The really good news is that mitigation techniques will halt the spread of the crud effectively, if utilized properly. The other viruses and contamination diseases will also be reduced. Can you imagine a world without colds or flu? The bad news is the reluctance of large parts of the public to adhering to non contact discipline. Changing behavior effectively would allow the economy to re start, jobs to start back up, schools to open.
Unfortunately, especially in the US, people are contrarian and will violate social contact restrictions constantly.
Which is why our number of cases just continues to climb.

I have a book around here about those Confederates who emigrated to Brazil after the Civil War, about 20,000 of them. Brazil supported the Confederacy 1862-1865.
They were pretty successful down there, eventually intermarrying with Ukrainian immigrants and some Portugese/Brazilians. To this day the Stars and Bars are proudly flown in Central Brazil, and Confederate heritage is celebrated.

A protest near the Christopher Columbus statue in Chicago’s Grant Park turned violent Friday night, as the crowd started hurling objects at police officers who were guarding the statue, according to reports.
As conditions worsened, dozens of police officers arrived from across the city, FOX 32 of Chicago reported.
A total of 18 police officers were injured at the scene, the report said. Some required treatment at hospitals.
At least a dozen rioters were taken into custody, FOX 32 reported.
At least four civilians were taken to hospitals but their medical conditions were unknown, Chicago’s WGN-TV reported.
One injured woman was seen with a bandaged head, being prepared for transport to a hospital, WBBM’s Charlie De Mar reported.
The protest began at the park’s Buckingham Fountain, then the crowd moved to the Columbus statue, with some members throwing a rope around it – in an apparent attempt to topple it, the Chicago Tribune and WGN reported.
Rioters were heard chanting, “Columbus was a murderer! Columbus was a thief!” the newspaper reported.

I can never seem to find an answer in any of these books, to the question, ‘what happens to all the ‘bailout’ and PPP trillions of dollars?’ We know that back a decade or more ago, it went to big banks and corporations to prevent a major deflation.
This is my take, since I can’t figure anything else.
So take a quick snapshot of the economy pre-covid, frozen in time.
There was a specific amount of dollars in the money supply, and it had a certain velocity with people buying and selling, paying bills, meeting payrolls, general spending, etc.
Then the shut down happens and the velocity of money shrinks to a snail’s pace. People don’t get paid and can’t pay their bills and businesses have no income to pay theirs. Then comes the infusion of trillions of dollars.
Now remember the snapshot and the original money supply. To put it broadly, that money was divided between the haves, the have some, and the have nots. Mostly for the haves. It was still there, but it just stopped flowing. Then trillions come in and the velocity now shoots up again. People are spending and paying their bills again. But as before, that money is going up to the top eventually, to corporations and to businesses overall seeking a profit. To the thieving medical and insurance companies.
First, at snapshot time, you had a money supply with most of it going to the top.
Second, you have trillions more Added to it, again with most of it going to the top.
Is it that simple, that the money is just making the rich richer, stuffing their pockets while others merely survive? How can something like this catastrophe result in such a thing. Does some money just vanish, like Trump said the virus would? What am I missing?
You are missing that the money that goes to the top gets split up to a zillion shareholders. Yeah, some goes to the Elite, but stock is owned by everyone, pension plans, 401k, banks etc. People are using their retirements, savings, portfolios to live right now.

I can’t speak for what goes on in the US, where the waters are muddied by filthy lucre. Here in the UK there is no benefit to anyone to put a death down as Covid when it isn’t, because nobody gets paid any more either way. And with a shortage of testing, it’s more likely to go the other way, in the community and in care homes.
When my brother had his heart attack, he was tested for Covid (the result was negative), partly because that would dictate which part of intensive care he’d be treated in and partly because one of the many symptoms Covid can produce is myocarditis. It’s not just a respiratory disease. So you can indeed die of a heart attack caused by Covid when you wouldn’t otherwise have had a heart attack.
It’s not clearcut in many instances.
Public Health England’s counting is being investigated because they’ve been checking up on people who’ve ‘recovered’ from Covid and if they’ve subsequently died not long after (within a couple of months), they’ve put it down to Covid. In Scotland, on the other hand, there is a cut-off period of 28 days, after which deaths will not be attributed to Covid, even if the person died of the sequellae of Covid
Clearly it is not an exact science and cannot be. It seems the disease can have neurological sequellae too – and it’s too soon to be able to say how long-lasting these are. One of the after effects can include suicidal feelings. If a person who’s never felt suicidal before feels suicidal after having Covid, then tops themselves two months later, they’ll be counted as a Covid death in England but not in Scotland.
In countries with less sophisticated health systems, you can rest assured that vast numbers of Covid deaths will never be officially attributed to Covid. Even in the UK the number of excess deaths is far more than those attributed to Covid, so we can assume that’s happening here as well.

As the crud seems to get worse as you move south in the US, the idea that air conditioning seems to gain credibility. Legionnaires disease was bacterial and hid in the condensate water of air conditioning units. Has anyone even mentioned that scenario for COVID. Does it wait in the condensate and then spray all over when the system cycles? Do aerosol virus condense out of the return air and concentrate in the units? Something is going on as an undercurrent here as the mitigation methods are not even denting the rising case loads. Yet the northern tier are staying relatively low. Interesting too is that the northern crises hit during the end of heating season?
The mitigation methodology is simple. A mask is a partial barrier against ambient droplets containing virus. An n95 mask fitted well is a deterrent against the virus itself. A mask is needed when you are potentially exposed to the virus in the air. Droplets, airborne, whatever.
The virus goes everywhere in certain people and almost nowhere in others. No info yet on why that is. Until questions are answered, universal precautions are required. That says you treat all areas and all unknown folks as contaminated. If you do not know if an indoor venue you are visiting is clean of virus, wear your mask there. Do you keep your car clean of virus? No mask. Your house? No mask. Your RV? No mask. If an area has not had an influx of virus from a contamination source, a sick person, there is no need for mitigation measures there.
If an area is unknown, protect yourself. As the virus seems to be able to invade all areas of the body, any substance exiting the body can carry it away and infect other people, or other surfaces or substances. To me, public restrooms seem to be a good place to avoid right now. Especially the ones without seat covers. Beware the plume. Anyway, fecal oral control is, wash your hands when you have been somewhere where surfaces have been potentially contaminated. Endlessly washing your hands in your own house is a waste of time. Unless of course, a guest all of a sudden gets the crud.
Protect your own environment that you live in. Mitigate in any area that is unknown to you. That is it.

FWIW I am 691/2 and in the system. I recently had a heart sonogram at the direction of cardiologist which “cost” $2500 or so. Medicare paid what, maybe $300? I pay into BCBS so they will also participate. Nowhere was it advertised that the procedure would cost $2500 (took 20 minutes and involved a technician). Yeah, the facility pays rent and utilities, salaries, benefits, and on and on. Who knows? Maybe I got a bargain. In any event I too have paid into the system since 1966 and “I am just getting my money back.” What I should have done was borrow my future payments and bought a Shelby Cobra 427.

Your comment at 1:04 AM matches my feelings exactly.. I can’t trust what any so-called expert says on either side of the COVID argument. For me, given my age, the only sane action is to wear a mask and practice social distancing. Maybe I’m being foolish, but I’d rather err on the side of safety. I don’t feel that I’m losing my liberty, although I have lost some freedom to do everything I want.
However, we have to look at the big picture, too. At what point is the price too high for the shutdowns and other restrictions? There’s 330,000,000 Americans. If we were to take no precautions, how many would die or be permanently invalided? One million? Three million? What about the other 300+ million who will never be affected?

Wolf, announced the establishment of the DHS Protecting American Communities Task Force (PACT), a special task force to coordinate Departmental law enforcement agency assets in protecting our nation’s historic monuments, memorials, statues, and federal facilities.
“DHS is answering the President’s call to use our law enforcement personnel across the country to protect our historic landmarks,” said Acting Secretary Wolf. “We won’t stand idly by while violent anarchists and rioters seek not only to vandalize and destroy the symbols of our nation, but to disrupt law and order and sow chaos in our communities.”
On June 26th, President Trump issued an Executive Order to ensure that our historic monuments and statues will be protected. The Order, “Protecting American Monuments, Memorials, and Statues and Combating Recent Criminal Activity,” directs DHS, within its statutory authority, to provide personnel to assist with the protection of federal monuments, memorials, statues, or property.
As a result, DHS created the PACT, which will conduct ongoing assessments of potential civil unrest or destruction and allocate resources to protect people and property. This may involve potential surge activity to ensure the continuing protection of critical locations. DHS’s Office of Operations Coordination will also partner closely with the Departments of Justice and Interior to establish information and intelligence sharing.
“As we approach the July 4th holiday, I have directed the deployment and pre-positioning of Rapid Deployment Teams (RDT) across the country to respond to potential threats to facilities and property,” said Acting Secretary Wolf. “While the Department respects every American’s right to protest peacefully, violence and civil unrest will not be tolerated.”

You could solve some of these issues relatively easily, by changing the mechanics of how you vote … it’s much simpler than trying to change the mindset of half the population.
It would be good to have preferential (ranked choice) voting for most thing – president, reps, all state houses … it helps third and fourth parties to prosper, without destroying the electability of the two majors.
And then you need five senators per state … make it a real contest. And give them four year terms – all five up for election every four years – either in presidential years, or the non-presidential ones.
In Seattle last nite, peaceful protesters armed with baseball bats smash out windows at Starbucks, Amazon stores and numerous other businesses.
In Chicago, 18 CPD officers injured by peaceful protesters in Grant Park. Mayor Lightfoot and the Chicago City Council released a statement of support — for the peaceful protesters shooting fireworks at the cops. Meanwhile, with the police occupied, other peaceful protesters were looting Bloomingdales Dept Store in The Loop. A pleasant weekend in Chicago, which witnessed its 75th murder for the month of July.
One wonders how this is all going to end, or if it’s just the new normal.

This is starting to feel like deja vu all over again. Clinton hands Pigmy Bush a fantastic economy, and what does Bush do? One disaster after another. 9/11. Iraq War. Hurricane Katrina. Finally the Great Financial Crisis where we’re losing a milliion jobs a month, unemployment at over 10% and people losing their homes in record numbers. Stock market in the toilet. Enter Barrack Obama, and like some majic shaman or voodoo doctor, he brings the economy back from the dead. Stock market at all time highs. Unemployment below 5%, health care for all Americans. And this with oil at over $100 barrel most of his term. Still had growth between 2 & 3 %. He hands this dream economy to Trump, who proceeds to do what he does best. He runs it into the ground. Now unemployment back over 10%. Biggest deficits in history BY FAR. Race riots in the street. You think America would wake up to the fact that conservative Republicans don’t know what they’re doing and run em out of Dodge? Biden gets the same crapper economy that his boss got. Deja vu all over again.
There seems to be an ad running for a house in the town outside Vancouver where they filmed Rambo in 1982. Looked very, very cold in that movie. I lived in Portland OR and had no luck growing the “Beefsteak” varieties of tomatoes. The long cold spring never allowed the plants to take off to be able to set the big fruit. I was able to grow the smaller plum sized tomatoes better suited for the climate. Is a very scenic part of the continent though.

Here’s where I think you’re wrong about BLM: The BLM movement is roasting the Democrats you seem to think are controlling it. Sure, the Dems are trying hard to co-opt it, as they do with all genuinely progressive movements–note that they now have Bernie Sanders’ balls in a jar on the mantle, right next to Jesse Jackson’s and Al Gore’s. (Dunno if you ever read his “Earth In the Balance,” but it’s a profound and radical book, not written by the guy who ran for President, or the corporate wheeler-dealer he has become since leaving politics.) BLM, being fairly leaderless and driven by the same anti-neoliberal rage that caused 7 million Obama voters to switch to Trump, is not likely to be corralled by the Dems, thank goodness.
Another thing that’s been bugging me: as someone who is not just a speaker, but a student, of the English language, I have noticed that, over time, it changes. All languages do. And, anyway, most of the people I hear speaking on behalf of BLM are very easy to understand.
They’re pissed off about the same shortcomings of the American system that you are, and they ain’t gonna take it any more. So please, stop being afraid of the people who are living your vision!
