At yesterday’s Thanksgiving table, fifteen adults present, there was not one word uttered about impeachment, Russia, Ukraine, and, most notably, a certain Golden Golem of Greatness, whose arrival at the center of American life three years ago kicked off a political hysteria not witnessed across this land since southern “fire eaters” lay siege to Fort Sumter.
I wonder if some great fatigue of the mind has set in among the class of people who follow the news and especially the tortured antics of Rep. Adam Schiff’s goat rodeo in the House intel Committee the past month. I wonder what the rest of congress is detecting among its constituents back home during this holiday hiatus. I suspect it is that same eerie absence of chatter I noticed, and what it may portend about the nation’s disposition toward reality.
The dead white man Arthur Schopenhauer (1788 – 1860) famously observed that “all truth passes through three stages: first, it is ridiculed; second, it is violently opposed; and third, it is accepted as self-evident.” America has been stuck in stage two lo these thirty-six months since Mr. Trump shocked the system with his electoral victory over She-Whose-Turn-Was-Undoubted, inciting a paroxysm of rage, disbelief, and retribution that has made the Left side of the political transect ridiculous, and repeatedly, ignominiously so, as their fantasies about Russian “collusion” and sequential chimeras dissolve in official proceedings.
The astounding failure of Mr. Mueller’s report did nothing to dampen the violent derangement. There was no rethinking whatsoever about the terms-of-engagement in the Left’s war against the populist hobgoblin. The solidarity of delusion remained locked in place, leading to Mr. Schiff’s recent antics over his false “whistleblower” and the enfilade of diplomatic flak-catchers tasked to ward off any truthful inquiry into events in Ukraine.
But then, with the Thanksgiving shut-down, something began to turn. It was signaled especially in the Left’s chief disinformation organ, The New York Times, with a week-long salvo of lame stories aimed at defusing the Horowitz report, forthcoming on December 9. The Times stories were surely based on leaks from individuals cited in the IG’s report, who were given the opportunity to “review” the briefs against them prior to the coming release. The stories gave off an odor of panic and desperation that signaled a crumbling loss of conviction in the three-year narrative assault on the truth — namely, that the US Intel Community organized a coup to overthrow the improbable President Trump.
From this point forward, the facts of the actual story — many of them already in the public record, one way or another, and sedulously ignored by the news media — will be officially detailed by federal authorities outside the orbit of the coupsters, and finally beyond the coupsters’ control. The facts may include the uncomfortable truth that Mr. Mueller and his helpers were major players in the bad-faith exercises of the Intel Community against the occupant of the White House.
I’m not so sure that the Resistance can keep up the fight, since their enemy is reality as much as reality’s mere personification in Mr. Trump. The violent opposition Schopenhauer spoke of in his three-stage model was just procedural in this case, moving through the courts and committees and other organs of the state. I don’t think the Left can bring the fight to the streets. They don’t have it in them, not even the ANTIFA corps. The hard truths of perfidy and treachery in the upper ranks of government will rain down in the weeks ahead, and when they do, there’s an excellent chance that they will be greeted as self-evident. The Times, the WashPo and the cable news networks will have no choice but to report it all. My guess is that they will display a kind of breathlessly naïve wonder that such things are so. Most remarkably, they might just assert that they knew it all along — a final twitch of bad faith as the new paradigm locks into place.
I expect that we will see something else happen along with that: a loud repudiation of the Democratic Party itself, a recognition that it betrayed the mental health of the nation in its lawless and demented inquisitions. I expect that sentiment will extend to the party’s current crop of candidates for the White House, to the delusional proposals they push, and perhaps even to the larger ethos of the Wokester religion that has programmatically tried to destroy the common culture of this country — especially the idea that we have a duty to be on the side of truth.

It may be that one of the reasons for the flagging Resistance is that President Trump hasn’t done any of the awful things the predicted. No deportation of “Dreamers” or Muslims, no concentration camps for gays (people actually believed that would happen), no oppression of minorities (instead, the lowest unemployment and greatest wealth of blacks in American history), and most of all – no new wars.
Hard to maintain the golem narrative in the face of those facts. Then again, most of our opinions have nothing to do with facts.
You have something here. Your comments about wars and domestic issues basically begs the question,

Do you believe human activity is poisoning the environment? Do you believe the Elite are setting us up for mass extermination? Haven’t you said so? I never said wiping the slate clean was going to be good, easy, etc. But given everything we are facing it seems like it might be best. I don’t buy it. His so called base is a false construct from the corporate press. Trump is not a traditional Repub. and garnered support for a broader cross-section of the electorate.
Many who support Trump have no issue with immigration, I suspect. They have an issue with poorly controlled immigration, such as the Merkel approach here in Germany.
As for the wall, they have put up or redone 89 miles. Given the resistance he faces in Congress, I would suggest that isn’t so bad.

If for no other reason — but of course there are many additional reasons — the Deep State is frantic to rid themselves of President Trump without delay because of his clear apprehension to launch a military assault on Iran. And now comes the announcement from the governments of Iran, China and Russia that they are about to begin their first joint military exercises. Precisely what will the Liddle bug-eyed baby-raper in the big chair of the House Intelligence Committee do about that?
Trump was elected mainly on the immigration, border issue. The next most important issue was to remove us from useless entanglements in foreign war. On both counts he has failed miserably. That said, unless someone better comes along, I will vote for the bastard again.
I will also vote for the bastard again, even here in hopeless California where little homeless children are shaking with the severe “cold snap” right now.

I though am of the opinion that the Lefts’ position is “faith based”, now unfettered by reality, meaning we’re headed into what amounts to a religious war. I expect it will cycle through the stages witnessed during the French Revolution. Were I a person of faith I’d say, God help us.
Revolutions go through two stages, including ours.
Stage one is removal of the offending ruler or ruling class. This was “executed” well during the French Revolution. Ours started with the Declaration and took a war to resolve.
Stage two is harder, what to replace what was removed with. The US went through the Articles of Confederation which did not work and eventually came up with the Constitution which has worked okay for over 200 years. The French tortured themselves by first guillotining the revolutionaries, the doing the Monarchy again, then Napoleon, then another royalist pretender and then many republics since.
Usually the revolution produces a result that is not much unchanged from what started it. So a bunch of people get killed fighting for causes that never get dealt with.
Revolutions will stop only when the folks who do the fighting tell their “masters” to go to hell.
In between your two stages is the guillotine, or hang-’em-high stage. The US skipped that stage because it wasn’t a real revolution. Should there be a real one, heaven help the elites who passed the “let them eat cake” phase a very long time ago. They now regularly paint the people as deplorable, brainwashed, cultist, racist, ignorant. The justice system is in your face with their just-us judiciary, the ever increasing tax and fines burden, the military policing of the people, its ponzi rentier economy.
A real revolution, which as you say doesn’t change the status quo by much, at least gives the peasants their long awaited blood bath . . . These are true words. I agree. It is human nature to find easy fault in others when we own exactly the same faults we see. We know our own foibles well, if only through avoidance, that of course we see them in others right away. Response is instant and automatic. Even if we are not aware of what we are doing.

However, those returns are not hidden, except from those who have no business with them.
They are in the hands of federal and state government.

The point of the facebook thing was to prove there are people openly discussing shutting down dissenting views.
This means funding, websites, peoples methods of earning a living all for having a countering view and not being in lockstep.
That is the reality and when people are that rigid and controlling not only is the message being distorted but it makes some begin to question the actual motive.

Scientists are sceptics, by nature and conviction. So that’s where you go for information.
Most of them agree on the broad consensus of which you are aware. A small number don’t (I’m sure you can find them, given your abilities in ferreting out information about all sorts of other things). Christopher Monckton is not a scientist; James Delingpole is not a scientist; Scott Pruitt is not a scientist; ExxonMobil has employed scientists who famously came up with the same conclusions as the majority of other scientists not funded by fossil interests.
(Scott Pruitt, BTW, is a lawyer, who specialised in defending Christians in religious liberty cases – I mean what better credentials would you look for if you wanted to appoint someone to run the EPA?)
The physical science (physical chemistry in this instance) demonstrates that addition of CO2 to the atmosphere causes warming. Decades of scientific work have demonstrated, to the satisfaction of the majority of scientists working in the field, that the main driver at the present time is human activity.

I’ve posted it many times before. It gives both sides, in that it states the position of ‘sceptics’, then answers the claim with science. It is referenced, so if there’s an answer you’re not clear about, you can read the references. The magic thing about referenced articles is that they too have references, and so on, ad infinitum. So by the time you’ve done a whole lot of delving, you’ll know a heck of a lot.
But you’re not going to find an equivalent number of articles demonstrating that the consensus on AGW is mistaken for the same reason that you’re not going to find a whole lot of articles showing that smoking doesn’t cause cancer. Because unfortunately it does.
Anything you don’t find convincing you can look up further on the interwebz. One thing that there’s no shortage of is denier memes so you’ll find what you want. But make sure the claims of by the denier memes are as well referenced as the other articles you’re reading. And credentials do matter – someone who’s been leading a climate science team at the Max Planck Institute for 30 years genuinely does know what he’s talking about more than someone Trump placed in the EPA to muzzle the EPA.
Basically, Nightowl, just use the same perseverance and seeking after truth that you do when it comes to politics, the Deep State and the media.
But the Skeptical Science website is a good place to start because it has 197 ‘sceptical’ objections to the currently accepted science and you can read every one of them.
You can also go onto the Royal Society website, and to RealClimate, which openly displays actual discussions between actual climate scientists.
If you’re looking for a spreadsheet that gives equal weight to ‘sceptical’ memes and scientific facts, that would be hard to find, because they just don’t have equal weight. And you’re used to doing your own homework, so just do it.
If you don’t accept the consensus of scientific conclusions it’s up to you to justify your position. They’ve done their bit and it’s all there for you to research.

As far as John Michael Greer goes, for my part I ignore his stuff on magic, Dion Fortune, and all that other mystical stuff. As far as his arrogance goes, he sez himself that he’s an Aspie. I’ve seen this lack of social antennae before and I’m often socially oblivious myself which causes exasperation for my poor wife, so personally I’ll cut him some slack.
But Greer does make some really good points. Sometimes I agree with him and sometimes I disagree but I find him pretty sharp. He made the right call on Trump blaring that he’d win the election long before it happened.
And I’ll grant him this as far as religious beliefs go, people tend to shit on the whole idea, especially us – cough – educated folk, but Greer is right in that the scientific approach or method can’t encompass the entirety of human experience. It’s like this one commenter said on Greer’s site, science doesn’t do well with one-off phenomena. And people tend to confuse POSSIBLE explanations for occurrences with ACTUAL explanations. The two aren’t equivalent. In any case, I’ll cut some slack here too, I don’t think the warp and weft of the cosmos is so tight that odd stuff can’t slip through the weave here and there. And besides, for all the strutting that scientists do, they don’t know everything, like for instance what comprises the vast bulk of the universe, ie so-called “dark matter”. A narrow Democrat victory – where there are accusations of vote tampering or electoral fraud favoring the Democrat victor – could well happen.

I was chatting with an exec at our company in the aftermath of the 2000 election debacle. He said that the vote was very likely a tie. He said that if you re-counted the entirety of the votes cast ten times over you’d get ten different results given the inevitable errors that creep into even the most solid vote- counting system. And you’d probably get Al Gore winning half the recounts and Dubya winning half.
So what if it happens in 2020, that is a virtual 50-50 split in the popular vote, a narrow win in the EC, and a multitude of disputed vote counts? What if the election night results are a call for Trump’s opponent? Does Trump refuse to vacate the White House? What if he did refuse? Who goes in and extricates him assuming the issue ends up in the courts and the courts decide against him? What if armed militias start showing up in Washington and start assembling in the streets ie around the White House?
But what if the courts side with Trump? Then what?
What if the generals sit and watch chaos unfold and then decide to move in with the tanks and sort things out themselves? What if they start thinking they could get used to sitting in the opulence of the White House and the splendor of the Capitol Building? What are those generals thinking nowadays anyway? That maybe this democracy stuff is a bit oversold? That maybe what the country could use is a bit of spit-and-polish discipline? Some yessir, nosir straight answers?

On a serious note the natural inclination is to consider suicide an act of cowardice I think. From the perspective of organized religion I mean. I am not trying to start something. 2) But is Russia “our adversary”? Nope. There I disagree. There is no plausible way that Russia is an adversary to the USA. Russia has got its own interests, as does the US, as does any country, but I don’t see Russia’s interests conflicting with those of the US to the extent of being an enemy. Russia is no threat to the US.
But if Russia is an imperial threat to countries in Europe, well, the last I checked, people in countries like Poland, Ukraine, Romania and Germany are grown-ups and if they can’t find their man-pants and deal with shit on their own, that’s their problem. It’s not up to young American men to get killed doing things for Europeans that young European men aren’t willing to do themselves. And I doubt that Russians will be demanding Alaska as lebensraum.
This is one more place where people on the – cough – “progressive” Left need to tap the brakes. The school-yard is a place where intemperate talk results in fights (we all have direct experience), and the world is one great, big school-yard but with guns.

Re: Russia as an adversary – I’m not so sure.
On the basis that Russia has always been concerned with invasion & influence from the West (going back centuries), and now it faces the modern phenomena of NATO creeping East and US economic sanctions squeezing what is a pretty small economy, then I think Putin et al have plenty of motivation to do whatever it can to disrupt & discredit the post-war Western Alliance. Their Brexit playbook was masterful.
I could never understand pushing NATO right up to Russia’s borders, which to me seemed the worst sort of provocation. I’d go as far as to say NATO should have been disbanded — or at least severely scaled back — after the Soviet Union dissolved in 1990. The whole purpose of NATO seemed moot after that date.

Yes, identity is first. How can we be if we don’t know who we are? You instinctively understand that without this the Republic doesn’t mean anything. Our forefathers said this was a White country. We disobeyed and didn’t listen and now we’re stuck. If we had remained a White country we wouldn’t have to go through this pain. Before we can really move forward though I think you have to fully explain why Ethnocentrism is in and of itself evil. The instinct to preserve the tribe is basic primal nature that is imbedded in our brains and DNA. Why is prefering ones’ own tribe an evil thing? You don’t believe we all have the same capabilities, talents, worldviews, and dreams do you? Of course not. Races of people are the same too? All races have their intrinsic value, but they aren’t the same. Failure to acknowledge and deal with human nature causes pain and there is already enough of that in world.
Ethnocentrism is evil in the eyes of the American common culture. Everyone is different, groups are different, if a system cannot accomodate it’s enclosed ethnic differences, it is doomed. Don’t you hope that humanity is able to succeed with accommodation?
And no, I do not believe that different groups are the same. Certain stereotypes exist because of environmental adaptation from millennia ago. Denial of the differences is dumb. Any society must use the differences advantageously to succeed, we have not figured that out yet. If it is possible?
Your mentioned pain is real and is currently being aggravated in this country. How to deal with this human nature is what is being attempted to be worked out in the US, and so far, not well.

You conclude the conventional American experiment isn’t working, and I sincerely and completely agree with you that it is not, precisely because there is no good way to accomodate competing ethnic groups beneath the umbrella of a single nation state. It has not worked in history. If I am wrong please tell me. But for some reason you don’t want to accept this reality. Now that there is so much water under the bridge in terms of America’s descent into multiculturalism there is no political solution. Eventually the competition will be in the streets. I have mentioned before that a better path potentially would be to start breakup negotiations peacefully. Humans however seem to prefer inertia in many respects so it probably will never happen until again, the competition is in the streets.
As of now, you are not wrong. I would prefer the assimilation route, more amenable, more humane, not human, humane, but I actually agree with you that human nature may make what I wish the American experience could become impossible.

In short, elitists. Stated goal: save humanity. Unstated goal: f#kk over Americans by driving up fuel prices, making heating their homes and driving their cars unaffordable.
All the usual suspects will be in attendance, Soros, DeCapprio, Bloomberg, Gore, Kerry etc, flying in on private jets. There’s no reason to get upset with anyone Captain is there? Science can and has clearly been used for good as you have noted in your posts. Science has also been been used for harmful things such as the creation of nuclear and chemical weapons and AI. Science is not about consensus according to the scientists themselves. And anyway, science doesn’t have all the answers and doubtfully can get at all of the mysteries of life, the world, and the universe.
I’m not upset, SSL, I just don’t understand how everyday we are prepared to risk our lives based on the inventions brought about by science, and yet when it comes to something like climate change, when the vast majority of those scientists attest to it’s existence, some people deny it’s existence based on a tiny (3%) group of scientists who have been proven to be in the employ of the polluters. It’s not not like they don’t have a vested interest in denying the science. But hey, just keep right ignoring it.
Well I never said I didn’t believe that humans can have an impact on the climate. But Captain, it has already been said that even if we pulled the plug tomorrow on industrial civilization that the impact on global temperatures would be very minimal. Not to mention that changes in the solar cycles and cyclical changes in Earth’s orbit have greater impact on the climate system than human civilization. I won’t argue with you that we should reduce our consumption of fossil fuels. But we should be reasonable too.

What, after all, was the point? The original idea of NATO was to keep the Germans down and keep the Russians out. And down and out is what they are. We haven’t heard a peep from Germany since 1945, Russia’s been a shambles since the USSR imploded and for a long time before. In any case, US forces have no business in Europe, NATO has no business on Russia’s borders.
What this shows is that you can make a country half-way around the globe into an enemy if you go out of your way, which Americans did, and exert a lot of time and effort into pissing them off. There was no need for any of this. I can see countries being at loggerheads, but the US and Russia? I have trouble understanding the need for this animosity. Seems to me there’s more than enough geography between the two as a buffer.
As far as Brexit goes, even if the Russkis got up to some hanky-panky I would be cautious about attributing too much influence. The way I see it, the UK has enough bonfires that could explain the vote count. Same with the US in 2016.
In both cases the results were deemed unacceptable, and even more unacceptable was the implication that the powers-that-be screwed up mightily. And so they blame the Russians. They should quit making excuses.

Tragically, some of these broken people feel moved to express their frustration through an AR15. What to do about it is a true quandry and I haven’t the first clue.
As to the Russians influencing Brexit – there’s still an accusation that oligarchs funded the UKIP party which ultimately broke through and won that referendum. You’re right, there are plenty of other influences too – the British Tabloid media being a huge player – but in the end, I think you’d agree that Putin probably doesn’t mind the outcome as it splits Europe.
He still has expansionist intentions on Eastern Europe, and a united & well-armed Western Alliance is probably the largest single obstacle to that. This can’t hurt, along with Himself’s ability to and apparent desire to distance himself from Th EU & NATO.
