Now that everyone and everything not “woke” is a racist, a white supremacist, and a domestic terrorist, the mau-mauing of America is complete. The mug of strong English tea on my desk (a beverage from the worst modern colonialist nation) happens to be white. It is ashamed and disgusted by its privilege of holding captive eight ounces of a beverage-of-color. The beverage’s final indignity, of course, is to be ingested in my white body, and turned into countless chemical reactions there that benefit me while annihilating the beverage’s existence, which surely amounts to cultural appropriation, a kind of servitude, and ultimately murder! My wickedness will never be forgiven. Ironically, I drink strong English tea at 6:50 a.m. in order to get “woke.” Maybe I should switch to Yogi Detox Tea. (Warm milk would only accentuate my loathsome privilege and put me back to sleep.)
You see, I’m trying to imagine something like the thought process of the average Wokester. If the Left were a person, it would be in a locked ward by now on twenty milligrams of haloperidol QID. But we gave up on mental hospitals decades ago. So, the Left is on the loose out there in streets, threatening to “stab motherfuckers in the heart” one moment and ululating against gun violence in the next. I suppose stabbing motherfuckers in the heart is progressive because it allows you to get up-close-and-personal and share your lived experience with the motherfucker in question just prior to inserting the blade. Guns are so… white!
Pretty soon, America might have to start asking: what exactly is “progressive” about going insane? I think we’re getting close to answering that, and the answer is: nothing. The Left has managed to drain the meaning from the word “progressive.” We will not be able to take it seriously for generations to come (if there are any generations to come). The Left has applied every possible gimmick from the bad faith trick-bag to disable thinking in this republic generally, and the language that serves thinking. But its contorted maledictions are working mainly against itself as one preposterous idea after another bursts out of its collective pie-hole and into the blue-checked Twitter windows.
Speaking of “stabbing motherfuckers in the heart,” why are the “progressives” who moiled outside Senator Mitch McConnell’s house the other night not cooling their heels in a federal lock-up for threatening to assassinate a public official? That’s the usual procedure. How difficult would it be to locate them? Nobody has even asked — a peculiar development.
Twitter boss Jack Dorsey took the predictable “progressive” action of banning Senator McConnell’s election campaign account for posting a video of the very mob looking to “stab motherfuckers in the heart” outside his house. That should be good, at least, for a hearty lawsuit against Twitter that might raise the consciousness of the 23-year-old wokester myrmidons Jack Dorsey hired to pretend that their diligent bannings of non-woke Tweeters are the work of supposed “algorithms” — as well as Mr. Dorsey himself, the arrogant prick behind it all.
Any decent psychological detective can conclude why the Left, including especially the Democratic Party — formerly a pillar of our political system — has gone insane. Losing a national election two and half years ago traumatized the base. In the process, the party made the rueful discovery that it was devoid of reality-based political ideas. This prompted the adoption of reality-optional excuses for failure masquerading as political ideas: Russia did it! Trump was “Putin’s puppet.” That clinically paranoid meme, and the massive investigatory activity it provoked, ended in more failure, so profound that the party still can’t face it.
But the Democratic Party must sense that it is about to be held accountable for all that. The Deep State officials who acted out that shadow-play on its behalf, with all its seditious overtones, are about to be frog-marched into the grand juries any week now. The party itself, or at least its executive gang, the DNC, may be included in the clean-up operation. It’s really hard to see how the party survives that. Its loyal historians will probably say that some motherfucker stabbed it in the heart. More factually, the Democratic Party first lost its mind, and then committed suicide.

When I have to draw a diagram to understand the wise, the wise is not wise.
I hate to be the Debbie-Downer here, but I seriously doubt that there is a drop of “wisdom” at the thoroughly corrupted DNC.
Apparently Pete Buttigieg is already busy courting “The Superdelegates” even though the DNC voted to ONLY allow them to vote on a “Second Ballot” at the convention. (After the 2016 screwing Sanders got by the DNC, they HAD to throw his base a tiny bone).
Of course, with twenty candidates in the running and completely foggy Uncle Joe and Kamala Harris being forced down our collective throats by the MSM, it seems to me that stacking the field with so many candidates will be a good way to be sure NOBODY can possibly win the nomination on the “first ballot”, thus allowing (AGAIN!) the Superdelegates to choose the nominee.
It worked so well last time, I guess they’re figuring, why not?!

Tis true that if you want the unvarnished truth, you’d have to go to independent news sources like Jimmy Dore and a few others. With Kunstler, you get biased rants as viewed from the right rather than from the left. The reader is still left with a lopsided account of reality. Kunstler won’t let himself admit that the country, like the planet it spins upon, has changed since he was a wee tyke. Decades of unmitigated illegal immigration, unrestrained use of H-1B visas, and job offshoring have changed our social dynamic forever. The country is a tad browner these days, because of these actions that have been allowed to happen by BOTH parties. This undermining of the near extinct middle class, to do the bidding of the donor class, has led us to where we are today. It’s apparent that Kunstler believes our political left is completely psychotic, and the political right completely sane in dealing with our current challenges. That in itself should give one pause.
He certainly does not think the political right is completely sane! You ought to try reading his stuff–it’s quite good and toes no line.

Thanks for the link to your post, which you conclude with “But don’t worry, we’re in for another 15 months of sound bites, empty promises, and flash commercials until the current presidential campaign concludes.” One of those promises is canceling student loan debt. Vox looked at the idea and came to the conclusion that it wasn’t a bad idea, but it wasn’t as good as it was made out and was too dependent on cooperation from the states and their university systems. So it’s not a completely hollow idea, but it’s not as solid as one might think.
It is a campaign promise. You can’t get more hollow than that.
I think the student loan scam needs a real investigation, is what I think.
Cancelling it just lets the scammers off the hook.
I’m wondering why, when we see the low low interest people in the same time period were making on their savings and investments, people who took out say 30k in loans are expected to pay back nearly 50k in penalties and accrued interest.
Also, where is the information from the universities, as to just where a student’s tuition dollars go?
People like Liz Warren and Bernie, who directly benefitted from those high tuition rates, aren’t the best people to solve the problem.
They want to pass the cost on to the American public.

From a European perspective the American situation involves some serious head scratching. The label “Left” used in the US has no parallel with the European Social Democratic tradition, tied up as it is was with populism, organised Labour and Post-War welfarism. The term “Socialism” is used in the US as almost a term of term of abuse and for most post-war Americans is a something that is not discussed openly. Vacuous Wokesterism is what an old style Marxist would call a “Bourgeois Preoccupation”.
Check out the DSA Convention – the hits. These silly fokkers and vacuities interrupt themselves literally every minute with points of order and “personal privilege” – such as complaints about using the 2nd person plural “guys” from the podium. When each person comes to the podium, they give their name and their personal pronoun, for example John Smith, he, him. Misgendering is a huge no no, if not a crime.

Oh, and be skeptical of the branding of Justin Trudeau as in any way of the left. He represents the Liberal party, aka Centrism Central. Canada has two left-of-centre parties, the New Democratic Party and the Green Party, the latter of which I’m a member of. Trudeau’s veneer of open-minded multiculturalism is camouflage for a corporatist who identifies with privilege, and will smack down those who uphold principle in the face of power. His former Justice Minister learned that the hard way.

It’s hard to imagine anyone actually speaking for the left, as “the left” (whatever in the hell that term means anymore) is no longer a coherent entity. Fractured identity politics will do that for you. Amnesty International is a little late with its travel warning, at least 50 years late. Chicago’s homicides peaked in 1974 at 970 after experiencing a sharp rise in the late 1960’s.
They were all in favor of the destruction of South Africa and have nothing to say about the murder of Whites there. They fell to the Darkness long ago, if indeed they weren’t born from It (the Left).
I used to volunteer for Amnesty in my youth, back when it was an organization solely devoted to freedom of expression, and suppression of torture. Those days are long gone, and I now despise the new Amnesty that has replaced it, that is just another screaming woke leftist outlet.
Yes the US is a rather violent place by western world standards. But it is not the worst place on Earth, not by an order of magnitude. Yes, most of the world lives in a country more dangerous than the USA. And then of course, you need to realize that american whites homicide rate is markedly below american homicide rate. It is the american blacks of the ghetto, whose murder rate is 8 times that of whites, who really pull the american average to the level it is. If Amnesty were honest, it would say in its travel advisory: look around you and if you see most people around you are black, get out! Find a place where everyone is white, and you’ll be much, much safer.

The white mug (person) may or may not feel shame. Should he or she fail shame? I posit that the El Paso shooter should feel shame for his despicable acts, as should any killer of any race. In this particular case, I think a distinction must be made between a generic killer (all shameful) and one who kills because of race alone, which is particularly heinous, in my view.
For example, in Rwanda the Tutsis were slaughtered by Hutus because they were Tutsi (aka as “cockroaches”) and it was therefore “OK” to eradicate the infestation. Note: This could not be classified as an invasion, as the vermin were already in the country. This is a much more egregious type of killing than say, a robbery gone bad, a financial dispute, or heated love triangle as the reason for the killing applied indiscriminately to many individuals through no fault of their own, other than birth/ancestry/dna, etc.
Now, I believe that White Supremacists / White Nationalists / KKK, etc. should be ashamed for their abhorrent beliefs and in may cases, their abhorrent acts. Of course, I am aware that many of the White Supremacists cloak their beliefs in the language of “culture,” “values”, “community” and “ethnic pride.” Well, talk is cheap and actions speak much louder than hollow words.
Supremacists of any stripe are not just about color. They’re about language as well, e.g. “this is an English speaking nation!” Well, yes and no. Go to many suburbs of Atlanta and you will believe you are in South Korea. The signs are in Korean, the shop-keepers speak Korean as do the majority of the customers. The menus aren’t even in English in many cases. You can find a lot of Mandarin in Little Chinas all over the USA.
The same is true of Hindi, Spanish, Arabic, etc. The English “country” believers assert that all immigrants should learn English. Of course, that is easier said than done. How many Americans do you know that are bilingual? Have you yourself tried to study and learn a foreign language fluently? If you didn’t start very young, you will find it VERY difficult to get to the level of near native fluency. Anyway, it may not be practical to learn English with work and all, etc.
The White Supremacists are also very attuned to religion. Muslims and Jews need not apply. And Papists (Catholics) are hardly at the top of the list. Hindus are, of course brown, so their membership is not welcome, despite their claims of true Aryan ancestry (nolo contendere).
They pretty much like English speaking Protestants of European ancestry. As of late many Eastern Europeans & Russians have been welcomed into the fold IF their religion is Papist, Greek or Russian Orthodox and not Jewish or Muslim. The language and Catholic differences can be overlooked in these case for practical reasons.
An interesting dilemma is that of the Jew. While those of the jewish faith can, many times, pass as “white,” are they in fact caucasian or semitic (i.e. related to Muslims, in some way) due to their religious beliefs, and sometimes their skin tone? Many avowed White Supremacists would argue, no, that a member of the “white” race cannot abide a jew, muslim or hindu, no matter what. A minority may be more flexible on this question, especially the political leaders of the self-identified white race, which, it must be said, is the party of Trump, the GOP.
This area is particularly problematic with the Right Wing / Republican politicos affection for the state of Israel and indeed Saudi Arabia. It doesn’t play real well with true White Supremist base, but is vitally important to the political class, so it is overlooked. In time membership may be available to Jews, just as Russians are not welcomed into the White Supremist fold purely for expedient reasons. We will have to watch closely to see what happens on this issue.
As you can see, it is a varied and quickly changing mosaic of white supremacy worldwide and indeed in the USA, however the basis for shame seems to be fairly well established, not with whites in general, but white supremacists in particular. The problem is, is that modern day white supremacists often look like “normal, everyday” white people. Whiteness the “Jews will not replace us!” chanters in Charlottesville sans robes, cone hats, etc. They were wearing khakis and polo shirts for g_d’s sake! How are we supposed to tell the KKK from the ordinary, run-of-the mill whites? Well those tiki torches were a dead giveaway, I suppose, but really….

It is about the changing face of America, it’s political parties, the white supremacist movement and how difficult it is to keep up with the various alliances, nuances, internal politics, etc.

We have been seeing it up close and personal right here in local politics, but after fighting it successfully for a couple of years now, I will tell you what we believe to be the root cause.
After being raised from birth to believe that they are the center of the universe, those so afflicted migrate into Cyber-World (social media) where they can set up fiefdoms that are mostly under their total control. They receive enough “likes” and few criticisms (those that they do get can be deleted) and pretty soon their “my way or the highway” attitude is firmly entrenched. The old sellout politicians like Nancy, Hillary, and Chuck realize this and lead their lemmings ever closer to the shore. If this keeps up the way it is headed, that shoreline is going to rush forward to engulf them before they get to it and solve the problem for them. Perhaps that is the game plan.
I think you are correct, Walter B, in that online communities tend to breed insularity. They drive away people with dissenting points of view by being disagreeable, so that those who remain do nothing except agree with one another. This turns into a downward spiral of cultish thinking, as confirmation bias kicks in and the most extreme opinions rise to the top. Explains a lot, really.

Bernie Sanders is doing exactly what you say someone should be doing, JohnAZ. He is rejecting SuperPACs and other big money, and building his entire campaign on small-dollar donations from large numbers of people. This has the possibility to completely change how the Democrat party raises funds, and opens up space for it to be the party of working people, like it used to be. And he’s out there with plans to make real change for the better in the lives of real working people.

A friend and I went to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame a few years back. We drove in and stayed overnight in a hotel in downtown Cleveland. Yes the factor of 12 was the average ratio between worker and executive when America was at its supposed or economic prime in the post WW2 era. Whatever my reservations about this criterion, I endorse it as an economic policy.

Note the average annual compensation for a CEO of a company listed on the S & P is $11,000,000.00 the lowest paid worker in that corporation is most likely about $16,640.00 giving the CEO a 661 to 1 advantage this is the AVERAGE (in 2017 stats). Figuring 40 hours a week times 52 weeks the AVERAGE CEO makes about $5,288.46 per hour….if he actually works at all.
Why do we allow this? These are companies that permit the owners to hide behind the skirts of the government in the form of a invented unnatural entity that now has the distinction of being HUMAN by no less an authority that the USSC, another group of vermin.
Exempting private enterprises that don’t protect themselves with LLC or other Corporate structure from wage restrictions allows the individual entrepreneur the space to start that garage startup that turns into Microsoft.
Another thought, What has Trump taught us? Being a CEO or POTUS is such an easy job that ANY idiot can do it. That said why is the CEO the highest paid employee when he has the easiest job in the company? From experience routine rank and file workers work much harder both mentally and physically and with much more stress than any CEO, and receive much less compensation.
This thought first came to me as a private in the US Army in 1972. I was much more likely to die in battle than a high ranking officer but received much lower compensation for the risk. This had nothing to do with rank or who was in command and who would give orders and who would follow those orders but the value of my hide compared to those of high rank. My question was why should they get so much more in compensation and have a much better (materiel) lifestyle than me when it was my ass on the line, notwithstanding that I was a better decision maker and later a better leader of men than many of them.

My thoughts, JohnAZ: the problem is the absence of an authentic left to counterbalance the right. Especially the right as it has come to be since the 1980s.
The last significant big left-wing policies to get traction were LBJ’s Great Society initiatives in the 1960s. The one that really deserved to prosper and expand was Medicare, which was expected by its designers to be the opening shot to bringing full universal health care to the USA. If that had happened, the vicious economic pressures of supply-side economics likely would have been greatly mitigated. The vast profligacy and inefficiency of America’s health-care system as it exists now would have been greatly reduced, and tens of millions of people would be living without the kind of ceaseless existential anxiety for their futures that provokes political unrest.
Unlike its counterparts on the right, the serious left in the USA was largely crushed and removed from proximity to power with the red scares of the 1940s and 1950s. This was very much intentional on the part of right-wing political and business elites. This included intellectuals like William F. Buckley, who saw the New Deal not as a necessary accommodation to reality that rescued capitalism from socialist overthrow, but as a historical aberration that needed to be rolled back. What remained of the left was confined to places like universities, where it was subjected to further demonization that made any pursuit of genuine left-wing policies feel politically untenable.
Once left-wing economic policies were driven off the spectrum, what remained as ostensibly ‘left-wing’ was the example of the civil rights movement, which achieved real change. Meanwhile, as time moved forward the Democratic Party moved further to the extreme center. It ceased being the party of working people, and cozied up to big business with its deep pockets in order to fund its campaigns. Voters, it was felt, would follow them even though they had nothing to offer — because the voters had nowhere else to go. What was necessary was some ideological camouflage to show that no matter how little the new Democratic party had to offer, it still wasn’t as bad as them. This was the birth of the virtue-signalling Democrat moderate who spoke in ‘feel your pain’ language, while helping big business to pick your pockets.
That string finally played out with Trump’s defeat of Hillary Clinton in 2016. People are now talking about socialism again, because the need for something like it has never been more obvious. And because everyone can see that the Democrats’ fakery for the past 30-40 years is finally losing the last shreds of credibility.
Yeah, the second debate dichotomy showed what you are saying. I think the Dem split is wider than the moderate Trump split which may indicate the way things will swing in the future.
Trump made change in his first two years. The Deep State hates change. The Left hates change. Competition for diminishing resources will be the watch word of the 21st century and the polity of the US, or anywhere else have not got a clue what to do about it. So we go into a BS mode, which we are witnessing.
Even Trump is only trying to remove restrictions on an adaptable economy to make it more resilient to the changes and competition coming. And trying to level the trade playing field with our competition as they are draining our capital base. Both are necessary to competing in the future. But as far as attacking the real basic problems, no one is doing much of anything.
Because they can’t. Individual change is the only thing that will make a difference. Socialistic attempts to control the public will end up in revolution. Especially in the US, and a few Yellow Jackets in France.

Super delegates are among the reasons I won’t support the Democrats anymore. They call me & ask for my support, and I tell them “sure, as soon as you get rid of the super delegates.” Their reply is something like: “We don’t have super delegates anymore.” , and I have to remind them that that only applies to the first round of voting, and after that, the super delegates are back in the game, and the fix is in. I’ve gotten so I hate all of these pricks, regardless of their parties. All of this corruption on all sides will only lead to disaster in the future, as I’m sure most people here already know. Here is a glimmer of hope.
I noticed recently that almost all the local churches, and at least one synagogue, have fallen all over themselves to show how “welcoming to all” they are, by prominent displays of a gay pride banner.
I couldn’t help but think, if they really knew what they were supporting, they might not be so “welcoming”, because I have never seen a house of worship go out of the way to express their support of various heterosexual types of sexual behavior, such as bondage, swinger clubs, etc.
What those flags are really saying, to me, is that if they show their willingness to comply with government imposed religion (PC) perhaps the government will allow their continued existence. It may as well be a white flag.
Oddly enough, no such banner was displayed at the local Islamic Center. They seem to be exempt from government interference in their religious practices.
Getting to the hope part- as a feminist, I have been rather dismayed by the erosion of women’s rights in favor of men that I have seen gaining ground.

Carbon taxed taxation is baloney. It is just another way of bleeding the public of more capital and giving it to the government, especially the globalists. Individual behavior is what has to change, people need to drive less, drive electric, go nuclear for electricity, switch to renewables where feasible, decrease water usage on landscaping, turn off coal or clean it up, convert all lighting to LED, turn off lighting at night when not used, make RR competitive with airlines and switch, meatless days and others.
Remember though, all the above have very serious economic effects that need to be accounted for. And you are trying to get folks to change which is very difficult. As the Yellow Jackets in France have shown, government control to effect individual change does not work. The PTB have to convince folks to change, convince them rationally on half and emotionally on the other half. Trying to force the changes down the public’s throat is going to end up getting shoved up their own butts.

As to your reply from last week, if we’re about “facts and evidence” well, there’s gobs of it from all over the world, and it tells us that societies made up of different ethnic, linguistic, or religious groups tend to start fighting.
The USA has two founding peoples. This ain’t news and neither is the Civil War that followed and neither is the 150 year Cold War between those two dominant American ethnicities that you see playing out even today.
Just to the north you see preening delusionists calling themselves “multicultural” when all indications are that they can’t even manage a bi-lingual, bi-cultural country. The Brits can barely handle that multi-century Protestant-Catholic squabble in Ireland, nor the Scots-English divide. Belgian Flems cordially detest their Walloon countrymen, Yugoslavs went to the mattresses and so did Sri Lankans and the Burmese are still busy cleaning out their Muslim minority.
You can go on and on. The list of civil wars between contending and incompatible societies goes to the moon and back.
The question is why oh why, given the plethora of examples, and even the history on one’s own soil, do some Americans of a “progressive” bent go advocating for what most manifestly does not work? The people that tell us they’re about facts and evidence seem to be most averse to those very things.
As to history, it sticks America with those very facts to which so many are opposed. Slavery happened and there’s no getting around a large racial minority descended from those slaves. Amerindians got screwed out of a continent. The wars of 1848 happened too and there’s no getting around the descendants of those people that were conquered. These are simple facts. You’re going to have to share space with people you may not want to share with. This goes not only for Whites but also for Blacks and Indians and Hispanics. In my view, there’s no percentage in exacerbating divisions because the alternatives are hideous as history shows us, just as there’s no percentage in ignoring injustices that came in the aftermath. These things have to be lived with fairly and reasonably. I suppose what I’m saying is don’t bloody go looking for trouble, because if you look for it, you will find it.
You admit she’s right and then deny it. We’re not going to get along. The Blacks will never forgive us. Nor the Indians. Nor the Mexicans. The first two have real claims, the last not so much. (1) The ‘squabble’ in Ireland is not primarily protestant-catholic – those are just useful identifiers to wear on your sleeve. It’s about colonialism v. nationalism, which is why it’s intractable, not because people argue about transubstantiation, which most trouble-makers of either side couldn’t even spell.
(2) I wouldn’t get carried away too much about the differences between the Scots and the English. They are not existential and pale into insignificance compared to the differences between London city slickers and unemployed Liverpudlians in the same country.

Our refineries were equiped to handle medium and heavy crude from conventional sources, whereas, the US tight (shale) oil is light crude .American refineries, like those owned by the Kochs in Texas are equiped for heavier crude. Suprise! Venezuela sits atop the world’s largest reserve of conventional heavy crude. Therefore our aggression towards Venezuela via sanctions, makes perfect sense.
I understand about the import/exporting shuffling due to logistics & pricing, but bottom line is that the US produces around 12MBPD of various versions of oil, and the US uses around 20MBPD of oil products, so it’s not even close.

I also agreed with his position that the swamp needed draining. However, I’m disappointed that he let the rabid warmongering neocons, like Bolton, back in the White House.
Unless one is a psycho far-right or far left violent revolutionary, most of us Americans, whether a snowflake, deplorable, conservative, or liberal, can get along. In my experience, at first, we might rant and rave to push our beliefs and viewpoints, but after about five minutes things settle down, the craft brews come to the table, rational conversation ensues and everybody starts having a good time realizing that we have alot in common.

I will start this post by reminding that the World Civil War is part of the World War of the Roses, that is, the crypto-religious war of the Red and White World Projects, provoked by the anti-Christian Black World Project to physically destroy Christianity on the planet.

But the appointment of John Durham as the federal prosecutor in the case of the start of the Mueller investigation was a surprise in connection with the reputation of John Durham, which means that those who committed this crime really could not only go to jail, but also to the electric chair in full accordance with the law on treason.
But while John Durham methodically conducted his investigation, carefully hiding its progress, the former head of the House Intelligence Committee, Devin Nunes, no less methodically published the results of his investigation, which he conducted while the majority in the House of Representatives belonged to the Republicans, and which he failed to complete due to Hillary’s methodical resistance.
Obviously, she ordered her flying monkeys in the House of Representatives to sabotage this investigation, and if you remember that at that time the media regularly announced the upcoming arrest of the president, it is not surprising that the most consistent Trump advocate in the US Congress failed to bring this investigation to an end when he headed the House Intelligence Committee, but now that the Republicans are in the minority, he regularly publishes the results of this investigation in the media immediately after they are transferred to Attorney General for institution of appropriate investigations in response to the next Hillary’s steps.
Meanwhile, until mid-June, these actions of Hillary were preparations for the World Coup, which she openly proclaimed on television on May 5 in response to the appointment of John Durham as prosecutor in the case of the start of the Mueller investigation.
This coup was supposed to begin with Netanyahu losing the elections in Israel and his arrest after that, and then this coup should have spread to Russia to Yekaterinburg and Siberia, and finally end up in the United States with the arrest of Trump.
But something went wrong and despite Madonna’s spells at the Eurovision Song Contest in Israel, where she called Lilith herself to help candidate Hans (it’s good that at least his name is not Adolph), Netanyahu won the election, though with a minimal advantage!
And the fact that despite the truly geopolitical assistance to Netanyahu from Trump America and Putin’s Russia, Netanyahu managed to win the elections with only a minimal advantage, shows how bad the situation was on this front.
Indeed, this assistance included the recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and the return of the remains of an Israeli soldier by Russia, kidnapped in Syria many years ago.

And I will begin with the fact that, having won the elections with a minimal advantage, Netanyahu failed to form a government in connection with the sabotage of the head of the Russian party of Lieberman, who was dismissed by him from the post of Minister of Defense after the notorious crash of Russian IL-20 in Syria.
And since the President of Israel was preparing to take advantage of this situation in order to present the victory to Hans without any elections, Netanyahu, realizing that Lieberman was just biding time, announced for the first time in the history of Israel that the government would dissolve itself and the new snap elections to be held on September 17.

China’s debt to GDP is 55%, ours is 109%. Ready for this, current debt in the US is 22 trillion, unfounded future liabilities are 120 trillion, and that is just the government. China’s debt is 10 trillion, and they have the same problem now we do. The obligations to the people is higher than the economy’s ability to tax itself. So, like us, spend spend spend.
And by the way, the Dems proposals are insane, but if you just ignore debt, which the world has to do now, I guess you can just keep on spending to buy those votes.

Being awake, I felt it somewhat necessary to look up the definition of the term ‘woke’ as used in the context in your fine essay.
Well the definition was a surprise. Apparently people who are woke are: ‘alert to injustice in society, especially racism.’ So I’m guessing wokesters are people who indulge in that state of alertness.

(Not insisting on a celibate priesthood would clearly have helped too, because the default would have been family men.)

But aside from that, we couldn’t be more in agreement.
I’m a born-into-it Catholic and was raised/educated by a plantation convent from County Kerry, nuns of the Presentation Order. They arrived in the year of my birth (1957) and set up a school for the Green Island parish, a newly developed subdivision brimming with Dutch refugees in need of a Catholic option.
There were a couple of mature ‘Mothers (Aidan & Celine) who ran the show but the rest of the cohort (6 if I recall) were very young women – girls, in fact, perhaps 18 to 22 y/o (though to us they were ‘old ladies’). They spoke Gaelic on occasion, so the children could not know what they were discussing.
I’m guessing, in retrospect that many of these girls’ vocations were also an escape from intolerable alternatives – family violence, abuse, poverty and no doubt in some cases, from a realization that marriage & a horde of under-fed children would not be up their alley.
Thee’s now some pretty horrendous stories of nun-abuse coming out in my old-town’s news…things not quite as horrendous as the Magdalena Laundries, but pretty nasty. Even among these apparently beatific women, there were some twisted creatures.
My mother (now 83) still corresponds with a couple of those young nuns, now repatriated to Eire, who taught my brothers & I. I would love an opportunity to talk with one of them now and explore their motivation for joining.

Actually, I didn’t now that, Majella – in the Church of Scotland, ministers are paid a ‘stipend’, financed from central funds, as far as I’m aware, although obviously those central funds are partly made up of contributions from congregations. ‘Socialism’ gets everywhere, eh!! The Assembly decides from one year to the next if the church can afford to pay them an increase, as it obviously has other obligations, such as care homes and the like, as well as its ministries.
It was my in-laws in Ireland who passed on to me their opinion (from reading, I presume) that the widows of priests – especially those who died young – were a financial liability (celibacy was introduced in the 11th century of course, so current arrangements were not the context). In today’s context, I don’t know for how many decades the donations of the congregation would easily maintain a widow and her possibly large brood, for the time they were dependent, as well as a new priest.
Leaving that aside, yes, the whole ‘vocation’ thing is unclear. We know from literature that many women from poor backgrounds, especially if their face was not their fortune, ended up nuns, sometimes by ‘choice’, sometimes with none.
In fact, reading the aspirations of one person on this very blog to have young women assigned by ‘top alpha males’ to men they might not even like, I can personally see the attraction of a life that at least allowed you to escape one kind of bondage, even if it kept you in another.
I read an interesting book a few years ago, by John Lanchester: Family Romance: A Memoir (he of the excellent Whoops, a layman’s guide to the financial crisis of 2007/8).
Family Romance is a book about his parents. His father had been a banker, in the days when such people were mostly sober, suited gents, a large part of whose remit was to stop you borrowing more money than you could afford to pay back.
His (Irish) mother, as no-one in the family knew until after she’d died, had been a nun! And had had considerable achievements, having spend a number of years in India managing a school (which she may even have founded). WIthin the convent she’d been quite prestigious. But she’d left, having decided she didn’t have a religious vocation at all, and got married. And told no-one about her past.
It’s a while since I read the book, so I can’t remember if it was her or her sister (also a nun) who left her convent at an earlier stage, then returned. Anyway, this young nun, whichever one it was, realised her ‘vocation’ was a fantasy, and she returned home to her parents, hoping to pick up a normal life.
But the parents refused to acknowledge her existence, such was the shame of her situation, to them. She lived in their house and they refused to look at her or talk to her. I think she eventually re-entered the order or another one – if it was the mother, rather than her sister, I think that was why she escaped to India before giving it up altogether.
The real, big league Witch Hunts occurred in central Europe during the 30 years War, 1618 – 1648. About 40,000 ‘Witches’ burned at the stake and otherwise liquidated in those dark German Forests. The 30 Years War was the largest bloodletting in history — about 7 million dead — until WW1 came along and broke the record. Its a good example of what Europeans are capable of when they get riled up. I know it was a long time ago but human nature does not change.
