Behold the MSG “Sphere” coming to Las Vegas. No, it’s not named after the indispensable ingredient in General Tsao’s Chicken, but after the Madison Square Garden Corp, which, like everything else in this psychotic culture, has morphed into a supergigantic global enterprise — they’re putting up an identical “sphere” in London. It’s a theater / exhibition hall, with a lot of electronic razzle-dazzle: the biggest digital jumbotron screen the world has ever seen, and a programmable exterior skin that can change colors. Zowee! That’ll surely bring in the rubes from miles around. Costs $1.2 billion. The MSG hype sez:
A separate 1,500-capacity venue will also be included in the MSG Sphere to help support grassroots and emerging music acts, while a 450-capacity restaurant and nightclub, retail spaces and cafes are also being planned. Outdoor spaces, including a nature play space for children, seating areas, and an outdoor gym, will also be built.
A “nature play space?” Hmmmm… I like that. But, where are they going to get the “nature” from, I wonder. As if there aren’t already enough entertainments in this land of interminable streaming movies, porn, sports, and shooter games to distract citizens from the nauseating spectacle of their disintegrating republic. It’s not exactly the end of the world — but you can see it from there!
Shout out to Monique Kelly Milne for nominating this humdinger.
After Vegas runs entirely out of water, perhaps the sphere can be used to collect condensation.
“A separate 1,500-capacity venue will also be included in the MSG Sphere to help support grassroots and emerging music acts” – translated, this means bands get to play for free, for “exposure”.
Does it come with a sniper?
May as well call it the GHB sphere, because you’ll wake up with your wallet raped. For years now Clark County residents have stood to see taxpayer bills for grandiose publicly funded escapades and boondoggles. In the past, wealthy donors would often build great public works as donations to civic society. Museums……and performing art centers.
The Smith Center for the Performing Arts gave us a glimpse of classicism among modern day Las Vegas’ long history of pastiche and imitation. Yes Las Vegas is a hideous city. Why, because most of it’s architecture was built post World War II and built to accommodate auto centric urban planning. Visit Monaco, Istanbul or Barcelona if you want examples of excellent architecture in hot/dry climates.
q.When is a sphere not a sphere?
a.When it is a dome
Having the arse cut out of the base, so that it sits on the ground, and, gives you something flat to stand on, is a dead giveaway.
Putting my architect hat on I have to ask why such deception?
I conclude that this is more about being edgy, stuffing a round peg in a standard city grid, and improv. at the edges.
The sly reference to the castrato, in the context of its use as the ultimate performance space, is pure genius, I might add.
Some of us mere mortals would only get it, if it was an ensemble of two of these, set alongside a generous tower form.
Reminds me of an infection getting ready to pop open .
I wonder, why all the rumpus? Vegas already has the LINQ, and so this MSG structure just magnifies the rounded ball theme and makes it stationary. At times it seems to have the appearance of a giant, grounded soap bubble and one might hope it could just float or effervesce away. A harrowing hemisphere of haughtiness? See the LINQ here:

But yes, why all the rumpus? This truncated globe is a perfect fit for a city that practically defines urban jamming and hodge podge planning. I believe that this technological wonder ball is supposed to connect to the Venetian somehow, thus in some strange, unintended way, linking two cities poised to sink differently in the not too distant future.
Now wouldn’t it be wonderful to also use this as a giant planetarium, showing cosmic spectacles in spectacular fashion under the starless skies of Las Vegas. But no, this is an edifice for pleasures more earthy. A daring Dome of defiance, a domicile created by Dreamers. Behold the Magnificent Sphere of Gaudiness:

Again, remember, “it’s Vegas baby!”
That bluish sphere looks so much like the old films of a hydrogen bomb exploding as 30 seconds into this video:

For August, we had the landing of the alien warship. For September, it’s the detonation of their Quantum Singularity Bomb.
That’s a good thing, I hope you will add more information driving directions
Observe the MSG “Circle” coming to Las Vegas. No, it’s not named after the basic fixing in General Tsao’s Chicken,Write My Assignment however after the Madison Square Garden Corp, which, similar to all the other things in this insane culture, has transformed into a supergigantic worldwide venture — they’re setting up an indistinguishable “circle” in London.
