A peculiar feature of the human condition is that a society in distress will call forth intellectual witch-doctors to put on a colorful show that distracts the supposedly thinking class from the insoluble quandaries that portend serious trouble ahead. This feature is on display these days in the person of freelance space pioneer Elon Musk. He intends to establish a human colony on Mars of one million people by 2040.
Musk, who is also developer of the Tesla line of electric cars and businesses that make solar-electric gear and batteries, has tested a series of space vehicles, most recently last week’s celebrated launch of his Falcon Heavy Rocket, said to be the most powerful in the world. It is just the precursor of the soon-to-come colossus Musk calls the BFR (“Big Fucking Rocket”) that will convey as many as 200 people at a time to their new home on the Red Planet.
NPR reporter Ari Shapiro was rhapsodizing about this “Space-X” project last week on the airwaves, lending it the media stamp-of-approval. And since NPR is a major news source for the US thinking class especially, you can be sure this meme of colonizing Mars is now embedded in the brains of the Pareto distribution (“the law of the vital few”) who affect to be thought leaders in this land.
There’s an old gag about the space race of yore that goes something like this (trigger warning to the ethnically hyper-sensitive):
The UN convenes a General Assembly session on space travel. The ambassadors of various nations are asked to talk about their space projects. The Russians and the Americans tick off their prior accomplishments and announce plans to explore the planets. Finally, the ambassador from Poland takes his turn at the rostrum. “We intend to land a man on the sun,” he declares. There is a great hubbub in the assembly, cries of “say, what…?” and “wait a minute now….” The Secretary-General turns to the Polish ambassador and says, “Your scientists must be out of their minds. It’s six thousand degrees up there! How can you possibly land a spacecraft on it?” A hush falls over the assembly. The Polish ambassador looks completely relaxed and serene. “We are going to do it at night!” he announces triumphantly.
NPR’s Shapiro interviewed blogger Tim Urban of the Wait But Why blog for the segment on Musk’s space program. Here’s a sample of their conversation:
URBAN: If humanity is, you know, like a precious photo album you’ve got, the Earth is like a hard drive you have it on. And any sane person would obviously back it up to a second hard drive. That’s kind of the idea here – is all of our eggs are currently on one planet. And if we can build a self-sustaining civilization on Mars, it’s much harder for humanity to go extinct.
SHAPIRO: And a million people is about how many people he thinks it would take for a population to be self-sustaining.
URBAN: Right, self-sustaining meaning if something catastrophic happened on Earth during some world war or something that has to do with, you know, a really bad-case scenario with climate change, maybe some – I don’t know – the species went extinct on Earth but ships stopped coming with supplies and anything else, a million people is enough that Mars’ population would be fine.
Not to put too fine a point on it, I never heard so much fucking nonsense in my life. There’s absolutely nothing that might make Mars a “sustainable” habitat for human beings, or probably any other form of Earthly life. The journey alone would destroy human bodies. If you think that living in Honolulu is expensive, with most daily needs of the population shipped or flown in, imagine what it would be like sending a cargo of provisions (Doritos? Pepperoni sticks? Mountain Dew? Fabreeze?) to a million “consumers” up on Mars. Or do you suppose the colonists will “print” their food, water, and other necessities?
Elon Musk’s ventures have reportedly vacuumed in around $5 billion in federal subsidies. Mr. Musk is doing a fine job of keeping his benefactors entertained. Americans are still avid for adventures in space, where just about every other movie takes place. I suppose it’s because they take us away from the awful conundrums of making a go of it here on Earth, a planet that humans were exquisitely evolved for (or designed for, if you will), and which we are in the process of rendering uninhabitable for ourselves and lots of other creatures.
This is our home. Can we talk about the necessary adjustments and arrangements we have to make in order to continue the human project here? Just based on our performance on this blue planet, we are not qualified to infect other parts of the solar system.

Reminds me of C.M. Kornbluth’s “The Marching Morons” in which they did launch rocket after rocket of morons into space, including the salesman from our era.
Or the Golgafrinchans in Douglas Adam’s The Restaurant at the End of the Universe, who decided that a third of their population was useless. This third, consisting of middle managers, hairdressers, telephone sanitizers and the like, was tricked into getting on a space ark to colonize another world, leaving the other two thirds (the thinkers and the do-ers) to enjoy life without all these middlemen. The space ark ultimately crash-landed on an unknown planet and millions of years later, their descendants are known as Earthlings. The Golgrafrinchans left behind all died, in a plague transmitted by dirty telephones.
I grew up on the idea of space colonization, and I still like the idea. We would have plenty of resources to do it, without depriving anyone of anything, if only so much weren’t tragically wasted on military spending. (If only…) It’s not about practicality; it’s about facing the challenges of a new frontier. But boy, is space challenging. For example, up to 1% of the Martian soil consists of poisonous perchlorates. Mr. Musk might want to think of a different destination for his one million colonists.
Never read The Restaurant at the End of the Universe. Sounds good. Also sounds as plausible of an origin story as any I’ve heard from the major religions.
During my younger days I too believed we would already have space colonies and all the other science fiction goodies. However, I now trend more toward the dystopian versions of our future. Thus far all the techno gadgets and robots have not meant happier, healthier, more enjoyable lives for humanity. Rather the opposite seems more apparent in that as robots and gizmos replace humans in the workplace, the wealth goes right upward and those humans without jobs end up discarded like any other used up and thrown out item in our society. Hard drug use is up too. Escaping the sci-fi, economic wonderland seems more desirable to many than embracing it.
Also, after 56 years on this planet I now lean more toward viewing the dark side of technology. Sure, it may make a few things more convenient, but it’s also capable of imprisoning us too. Since we live in a culture that LOVES to punish people, most technology will seek that end. Or, it’ll be used for marketing to sell us more stupid crap. I am certain my inclination toward decline/collapse is due to my being fed up with all of the unescapable techno stupidity that surrounds us each day. I try my best to temper this bias when reading and interpreting what’s going. At least I know it’s there.

You’ve got to read Hitchhiker’s if you are going to get all the references! The humor is the usual British subtle kind, such as “this is the second book in a trilogy of four”.

One old science fiction meme is the advanced race who lives very simply. When first contacted, they look backwards. Only over time does it become clear that they are technically very advanced but live simply for pleasure and health.
The Sheep Look Up by John Brunner was written in 1970 and is on par with other dystopian classics but not as well known. Water is undrinkable, the rich live in compounds (fairly unusual 50 years ago) and shop at specialty grocery stores that sell only “organic” food.
Yes, agreed! *The Sheep Look Up* and *Stand on Zanzibar,* also by Brunner, are *stellar* and should be read by all fans of this blog.
Jim is right. This colonization of Mars is the most absurb idea anyone can come up with. If we want some people to live on a dead planet we can just try it out on the moon for awhile. Of course if we want a fantasy then try on the conspiracy theory that NASA already has a base on Mars.
Bravo Elrond. I didn’t know you had any of Prometheus left in you. But Mr Kunstler is right, for now at least, about Mars. The Way to Go if we do go, is habitats in space, mining the asteroids, setting Jupiter on fire, etc. Only much later when we have more advanced technology could we consider taking on Mars and seeing if we could terraform it. Who know? Maybe there’s still a lot of water underneath the surface. And it will warm up once we turn Jupiter into a Sun….

Interesting that you mentioned Kornbluth…In my extreme youth, I read and re-read Pohl and Kornbluth’s novel of the dystopian future…”The Space Merchants”, detailing the rise of the Corporate state….
Yeah, Kornbluth died too young. Would have to read his take on all of this as he grew older. Always like Pohl too. I readily relate to their take on humanity.

Old joke: There was a resolution at the UN in 1979 to blow up Mars but the US and the West wanted no part of it. They decided to let the Reds Plan it.
Musk’s problem is the same problem we have had since Plato in the Wet and the Axial age generally: rationality, meaning the ability or desire to express everything as a ratio of two numbers. It developed as a consequence of coinage. The “rationalists” have been using their power over numbers (and their undeniable raw human intelligence) to stick it to people who are more connected to Donatella Meadows’ idea of systems thinking.
Pu simply: Musk doesn’t have a number to put on the value supplied to humanity by the blue-green algae creating oxygen, and all the other natural processes. So the number he uses is 0, pretending that mankind doesn’t need something he values at 0.
Of course, this same inability to value things outside a “rational” (and nowadays, with probability, irrational) model has caused all of our other miscalculations, starting with the meltdown in 2008. At least with Musk we get the dream of space.

Well said. Musk is the ultimate Flim Flam man; a real grifter. It is hard to believe people believe his bullshit with such fervour. In fact, it borders on a religious following and dare to be the one who criticises this new prophet over a dinner table. Talk about wishful thinkers…ooops, wishful non-thinkers.
Is it too much to ask people to just pick up their garbage on their way out? And turn off the lights? I kind of like Earth and accept we could do a better job as we wind our numbers down. Hopefully. We have to fuck up another planet, too?
Maybe Musk is actually doing us a favor by proving that none of this crap actually works or is sustainable. Maybe it takes proving that electric cars aren’t going to solve any energy or pollution problems, and that it’s impossible to establish a permanent presence on Mars.
With these magical technological solutions disproven, maybe people will see that we need to come up with more practical solutions to our problems.

i think it would make a lot more sense to have a base on the moon first, as proof of concept and to test and develop the means to colonize other planets and moons but why is it impossible to have a permanent presence on mars? i agree its probably decades away if we were to seriously pursue it now but why impossible?
I guess it’s not totally impossible, but the probability depends largely on what sort of energy inputs we’ll have to get us there and to supply such a place and to power the whole operation. Nuclear? If you follow JHK’s line of thinking we’re not going to have enough fossil fuels to supply such endeavors. I don’t think it’s going to happen due to cost.

Contrary to JHK’s allergy to conspiracies, I put many of them in Agnostic/Don’t Know file anymore. There are a shit ton of people in this country who can’t handle the truth, don’t want the truth, and never ever want to get any truth on themselves. Ever. As such, maybe the deep state knows this and operates accordingly.
The one thing I do know is we’ve all had so much BS blown up our behinds, that determining the truth anymore is a full-time job and then some. Which is a conspiracy theory about the deep state CIA itself. That they get us to the point of not knowing what’s true and what isn’t.

I was wondering whether you’d write about SpaceX launch of the Falcon Heavy. Even Stephen Colbert, big space booster that he is, thought the image of sending a red convertible blasting Bowie’s “Life on Mars” into the dark void a winning example of a midlife crisis. To top it off, the dashboard read “Don’t Panic,” a reference to the Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy books, radio show, and movie. That was enough to get him to crown Musk “King Nerd.” James Corden also remarked on the phallic imagery of it all, wondering if the rocket should be blurred on national TV.
As for “adventures in space, where just about every other movie takes place,” the current award-winning science fiction movies and TV shows aren’t set there. “The Shape of Water” takes place in the U.S. of the past, “Get Out” in Alabama (yes, that’s where it was shot) of the present, and “Blade Runner 2049” and “The Handmaid’s Tale” in an environmentally ruined former U.S. of the future. No space in any of them. Only “The Last Jedi” goes there, and it isn’t winning any Oscars.

I’d like to think that I might be slightly less delusional than Elon Musk by just hoping that North and South might eventually get together and re-unite some (perhaps considerable) way down the road. I may be way off beam – and anyway it’s only in my own head so completely harmless. It must be a less damaging delusion than throwing a whole load of your resources into building a Walmart on Mars.

There are who credit Him with all things and all misfortune as well. I am not one of those people. There are forces of evil and I know them well and I give credit where credit is due. I do not believe that we are handed down suffering as some sort of test or even as punishment. I do believe however, that we shall be judged on how we react to such things and how we deal with them. There are forces of good and those of evil. Credit for either must be properly placed before wise decisions can be made.
And what kind of God would God be if God never communicated with Man? Your denial of revelation makes God into an indifferent entity at best. Many of the Founders believed in this kind of Masonic entity though – with the idea that Man would make a better god…

I thought you did when you agreed with Scratch about the evils of man made religion. By definition, the religions, or at least the true ones, begin as revelations – and not merely or only man made. As Aquinas said, the misuse of something says nothing about the thing itself. Ditto its corruption. That the revelations get mangled is not news since people are so corrupt.
Corrupt, indeed they are JS, indeed they are. That is why religion which is man made has very limited value. Fortunately for us, we are invited to go directly to Him and He always listens. He is always there and has fulfilled His promise to His people to send One To Show The Way. Cut out the middle man, he takes his spot for profit, not for function. The Word has been given. The Path is direct and available to all. Take it, it is the one least travelled. It leads home.
So also thought the now-forgotten founder of the Christian movement. “Beware of making a show of your religion before men.”
Because shows are meant for profit and entertainment and movements are best performed by an orchestra. The best we can hope for is to set an example and if that example has value it can be followed or not, it is not ours to determine only to present the best example we can maintain.

It will be interesting to see if the magical thinking will actually work to our benefit in the long-run-emrgency.
Mars has a few good qualities that would be good for us humans. It is on the edge of the habitual zone and has a day that is of similar length to Earth.
Mars however would not be good for us unless we could magically terraform it to have a thicker atmosphere and a molten core for making a magnetic field.
If we could do this, Mars would be the perfect place to live on as the sun ages and gets brighter at a rate of about 10% every 100 million years.
To get a thicker atmosphere we would have to bombard Mars with many billions of tons of rock from the asteroids and we don’t have that ability. We would also have to fill the center of the planet with enough actinides to form a planetary scale breeder reactor like the one that is theorized to exist in Earth. That reactor would have to power the heat needed to melt iron and form the magnetic field required to shield the planet’s surface from some of the cosmic radiation.
I agree that Elon is running a circus stunt right now. Terraforming Mars would be a process that would take thousands of human generations to complete.
We might be better off looking for an Orange Dwarf star nearby with a large rocky planet in the habitable zone and settling there.

I’d call myself a techno-utopian, but even I think Musk’s plan is ridiculous – for many reasons. I go back and forth on whether we should commit to a more vigorous space program or straighten out our messes here on Earth first. Your last sentence about infecting other planets is something I think about a lot. Space has existed for 14 billion years; it can wait for a long time more before it welcomes us.
BTW, what is it about Mars that makes people want to colonize it, rather than the moon or orbiting space colonies? If we want to utilize part of our global resources to proceed into space, these would be the most reasonable solutions. Still, it’s questionable we will even survive as a species. We got a lot of growing up to do.

I don’t remember the details, but some decades ago one of the well-known science fiction writers wrote a story about humans inhabiting Mars, and in the story they trashed the place just like they had done to Earth.
On the bright side there’s Kim Stanley Robinson, who is also pretty well known. In his Mars trilogy, we end up making Mars a pretty great place to live.

1 million people on Mars by 2040. It is 2018. In 22 years? Assuming a population growth rate of 4% of 100 people sent in 5 years (2023), this would get you a population of about 200 people in 2040; native growth won’t get you there.
If you were to just send people there (ignoring Mars births), starting with 100 people in 2023, a transportation growth rate of 50% (insane) would get you to 300K people by 2040. A 50% growth rate in anything, especially in something like space travel seems outlandish. Even Moore’s Law for semiconductors, one of the most amazing growth stories ever, had a doubling every two years.
Unless someone comes up with really cheap transport to orbit (on the order of having a space elevator, anti-gravity, or completely reusable spacecraft with costs on the order of commercial air travel), this is beyond comprehension. John Michael Greer has written a lot about Musk’s pronouncements and gimmicks; I can’t find the reference right now, but his commentary is spot on. However we should remember that the Space Shuttles re-entered the atmosphere for landing completely under computer control. The human pilot took over only for the final touch-down. This was starting in 1981.

Like many of musk’s ideas, we could probably eventually have a sustainable colony on mars, but the concept is so far from reality today that to make estimates on timing, expense, population etc. is foolish. 1 million people by 2040 is completely pulled out of his ass as was the the expected launch dates and production estimates for everything else he’s done. But he has done them – usually not on schedule or on budget but he’s done them. Having said that i do think the boring company will be a huge failure and will never “launch”.
I give musk credit though because he actively works on solutions for problems that he sees and he is pushing consumers in the right direction with his products. I know jim would say he’s missing the point because our whole system and way of life needs to change but musk makes people think it doesn’t have to, that everything can just be converted to electric which is untrue. Why isn’t it? I don’t think it’s the best choice for our first permanent base somewhere, i think our moon makes a lot more sense. As to the possibility of it there are natural features on mars that would offer protection from radiation ie. caves and lava tubes (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caves_of_Mars_Project)
Costs need to come down, public support needs to go up and we’re probably decades away but it is possible. We’ve landed plenty of rovers there in the past. We could have landed people there already if we built off of the Apollo momentum but we went to the cheaper space shuttle program instead.
Is mars a worthy investment? What’s the economic return, if any? Does it make more sense to try it elsewhere first? Those are good questions but it should be technically possible in the near future to have some kind of base there.
Instead of exploring the Solar System, we decided to take care of minorities instead. The more we feed, the more they will breed.
Imagine if we worshiped Bears and devoted ourselves to taking care of them. The bears would expand out of Yellowstone and soon be jacking people for their McDonald’s Happy meals in Caspar, as they do now at Yellowstone. When I saw the engrossing film “The Martian” some years ago, I was intrigued enough to look up the average temperature on Mars which is -67 degrees Fahrenheit. Summer on the equator as high as 68 degrees and winter temps as low as -243 degrees F. We should practice raising potatoes in Antartica….. The lack of an atmosphere is a negative too…

I don’t have a problem with electric cars per se. I use hybrid buses and, along with the tram, they keep some diesel pollution from pedestrians, cyclists and even other drivers.
My little grandson goes to a school with a playground right next to a T junction where people stop, idle and start all day long at the traffic lights. It’s one of the schools the Council is monitoring for the damage the vehicle pollution could be doing to the kids’ lungs.
That doesn’t mean I believe in the ‘driving to Walmart forever’ meme – I don’t even have a car – but while people have them, I’m happy for them to drive electric ones rather than petrol or diesel.

New York rumors or how to put pieces of truth into a single whole
The question arises: why should readers of this blog figure out the intrigues of the serpentarium sitting in the Washington swamp, and monitor Trump’s attempts to drain this swamp?
The answer is very simple – part of the serpentarium in this swamp has tasked itself to destroy Russia and for this purpose is ready to set the United States up for destruction.
And the swamp is called the swamp by the US president who is persistently trying to drain it, and his electoral base is persistently trying to remind him that the main promise of his election campaign was his promise to put Hillary Clinton behind bars.
The most interesting thing is that on Russian television people who for years have been calling for love of the Shining City on the Hill, when this hill was a swamp and a bunch if disgusting reptiles wriggled in it, without worrying about the possible draining of this swamp, suddenly became rabid anti-Americans when in the US came to power President, who does not hesitate to openly express sympathy to Russia and the desire to see an ally in it.

Humanity has always needed frontiers and new challenges. Earth is getting to the point where no matter where you go you are regulated to death and hindered from experimenting with new things, either by government or by neighbors. Almost everything has been bought up by the new aristocracy and put off limits to us ordinary mortals. We do need a new frontier, whether it is the seabed or Mars or somewhere else doesn’t really matter.
In the 15th century, it might have been said of Europe, where the aristocracy owned everything and there were no opportunities for Joe Sixpack to get land, that they would have done better to seize and divide the land than to risk crossing the Atlantic and establishing new colonies over there, but if they had tried that we probably wouldn’t have the capability to get to low earth orbit today.
I expect Mars could be colonized in time. Getting there IS a problem – I read even Musk’s successful rocket is going to miss Mars and end up in the asteroid belt. You would probably need to build a much larger spinning-wheel ship in orbit to somewhat replicate gravity before sending colonists. Before even that, you should put refueling ships and supply ships in Mars orbit for the use of the colonists, and use robots to build a habitat for them on or under the surface. And before even that you need to have a reason to settle there profitable enough to attract backers. Columbus foolishly offered the prospect of gold to get the backing he needed. But he had no real idea whether there was any there or not, and it was discovered too late to benefit him personally. Today we can do better, by sending robotic missions to locate resources that are actually there before sending humans or not sending them if such resources don’t exist.

Let’s put some numbers on Elon’s Pipe Dream to Mars.
1. To get to 1,000,000 people in 17 years, you don’t have to start with a million. There will be 9 launch windows over the 17 year effort. If you send 79,580 people per window and get them busy at 3% per year you only need to send a total of 716,220. Nature can make up the difference.
2. To feed all these people on the 7 month trip you’ll have to supply them with a minimum of 14,000 tons of food. Probably a lot more. I based my figures on hard tack. That stuff that keeps forever and fed our troops in the 18th and 19th centuries. Water will be a lot less as it can be recycled somewhat. Probably 130 tons.
3. How much does all this weigh? A lot. Just the food, water, and passengers will weigh on the order of 40,000,000 pounds. The current launch costs are about 3,000/pound for low Earth orbit, LEO. Mars is a lot further.
4. Then there’s all the support hardware. Suits, tools, computers, toilet paper. Speaking of which, all the toilet paper and related stuff will have to be stored up along the way. That may seem like a bunch of do-do to us, but for the new Martians it’s organic material worth it’s weight in gold. One of the first and most important tasks for the Martians will be making soil. And that won’t be easy. First off, the Martian regolith (I wouldn’t call it soil) must have the perchlorates washed from it. Only then could it serve as a substrate for agriculture. All that do-do must be composted and mixed with the clean regolith. The Martians will have to bring along soil samples and fertilizers to get the ball rolling.
5. The next trick will be enclosures. Humans will have to spend most of their time several meters below the surface or face an early death by cancer, blindness from cataracts, and who knows what else. If you’ve wondered what it’s like to be a mole, here’s your chance. On the topside, imagine acres of crops under geodesic domes. Bucky would be so proud. But, there’s a problem. If the dome is sheathed in plastic, it will gradually go opaque from the radiation. Not to mention embrittlement. Hopefully, these settlements will be near the equator to minimize the effects of the inverse square law. You know, the brightness of the sun diminishes as the square of the distance? Plants might still grow, but their energy capture will be limited by the available sunshine, which will be about 43% of the Earth’s.
6. On the business issue from item 1, it remains to be seen if humans can reproduce in a 3/8-gravity environment. If it’s possible to conceive and carry a fetus to full terms, what will be the effects of low gravity on its bones? Could it survive birth? What about the increased radiation? And how many women would sign up to be Martians if one of the requirements is to get preggers ASAP? Remember that to get the population of Martians to a million by 2040, it’s only necessary to sent 30% less than that. Considering the cost, that may be their only way.
7. Who pays for all of this and what is the return on this huge investment? Even if the launch costs for LEO can be brought down to $1000/lb., the cost for a Mars launch must still be at least in the multiple thousands. My “guestimates” put the payload weight somewhere in the neighborhood of 100,000,000 pounds per launch window. That’s close to ten trillion dollars every 26 months. And that’s just the launch cost. There would likely be several times that in the required infrastructure.
8. What would medical care look like on Mars? For all the women who are expected to spit out children like cherry stones, this will be a big concern. Infant and maternal mortality is no joke. The release form for the trip to Mars might read something like ‘we can treat you for this, this, and this, but not that.’ Who would sign up for ‘that?’
Again we come back to the radiation environment. Children are a lot more sensitive to radiation. Instead of a few meters below the surface, it might be necessary to dig down a few tens of meters. One might expect that natural selection would someday produce a human adapted for Mars. On the other hand, it’s difficult to evolve immunity to a gunshot to the head. Mars may kill us quicker than we can adapt.
9. What about the human factor? For Mars to become a colony, it’s going to have to be a one-way trip. For those who get a month or so into the mission and decide this isn’t for them, what’s their alternative? Who pays if they get cold feet? As the number of people per mission increases, the selection criteria must also decrease. There aren’t 79,580 test pilots or submariners to choose from. There may be occasional return flights to Earth. How far would someone go to get a seat? What would be the response by some presumed local authority? Living in a hole might just be too depressing for humans. We evolved to be hunter/gatherers on the African savannah. Can we thrive as mole rats?

The federal government this January ran a surplus while collecting record total tax revenues for that month of the year, according to the Monthly Treasury Statement released today.
January was the first month under the new tax law that President Donald Trump signed in December.

For $79, you qualify for an ‘Executive Package’ that includes four books full of this fear-mongering.
Rickards also wants you to buy his book “Road to Ruin“. Don’t buy it. Get it from that commie institution, the public library.

These are all very complex investments, with fine art being among the most challenging. Rickards speaks about a Mar a Lago Monetary Commission that will reboot the dollar. He talks about gold going to $10,000 an ounce, and how you can profit 1000% on a certain investment—–not gold. Pay to find out which one.
I haven’t found much practical help for the average or even above average Joe in his books. It’s just the usual remedy as you mention.
That being said, there’s a lot to learn from his books, and I think they’re worth the read. A real good ROI.

I do not read Rickards for his advice…I read him because he outlines macro-economic issues and does so in a manner that has a ring of truth. His books have well-defined the underlying issues, explains how we got into trouble, and usually will benchmark various economic indicators to watch for that the Fed and other entities watch by which they make their decisions.
I do not read touts for their economic advice…I made my own economic decisions which are definitely not mainstream,..in fact, I have never even heard of anyone “investing” as I have done.
Rickards is extremely well-versed in global macro-economic issues, and he explains them well. I could not give a rats butt regarding his investing advice, however.

US 52%, Australia 18.6%, Canada 6.3%, Germany 4.6%, Norway 4.2%.

Regarding my comments on your own posts, I have done nothing more than respond to exaggerations and untruths (and rudeness). If someone presents Brexit, for example, as being about Muslim immigration, which it categorically is not and could not be, in the present circumstances, that needs to be corrected, because other people reading deserve to hear the truth. (As mentioned before, Brexit is logically more likely to lead to an increase in immigration from non-European countries with which the UK signs new trade deals, at the expense of (predominantly Catholic) Eastern Europeans).
Likewise, if someone who doesn’t live there tries to misrepresent the demographics of the UK for effect (2.8 million Muslims out of a population of 65 million) or even those of London (12.4% Muslim) – and in both cases total Muslims, rather than practising ones – then the readership deserves to see the hyperbole replaced with actual statistics.
Thankfully, most CFN-ers from the US don’t engage in such misrepresentation, even if their political and cultural views don’t entirely accord with a more European or British perspective.
