JHK’s Three-Act Play
In these climax years of industrial technocratic society, two opposing forces shape the destiny of government: the desperate effort to control everything versus the decline of the ability to carry out that effort. The result will be the loss of legitimacy and the collapse of government from the highest levels, moving downward until the real power to make anything work re-sets at a feasible and appropriate level — probably very local. This dynamic is seen very clearly in three spectacles du jour: the “national security” (spying) mess, government-sponsored accounting fraud in finance, and the ObamaCare rollout.
As history develops, people do things for the simple reason that it seems like a good idea at the time. Computer tech made it possible for bureaucrats and military apparatchiks to invade the privacy of everybody, but in the end it only had the effect of embarrassing the perpetrators and eroding a big chunk of the US government’s legitimacy. The attempt at maximum control will eventually lead to maximum resistance and, quite possibly, some sort of political revolution, perhaps starting with the death of the two dominant political parties. When political disruption finally occurs, it will manifest quickly, as criticality thresholds are breached. It has the potential of taking this society in very undesirable directions including civil war, theocracy, and war against other peoples.
The diminishing returns of computer technology applied to intelligence gathering are that it produces more mountains of data than any team of professionals can make sense of, and it prompts said professionals to make mischief with the information that is easiest to sort out: the financial records of ordinary citizens. Nothing will create political resistance more surely than messing with people’s money. The NSA apparatus is now a self-reinforcing monster that will strive for ever more control ineffectively, creating a debris path of ever more embarrassment and resentment. A lone true patriot like Snowden does more to oppose this monster than all the “freedom” and “liberty” spouting, flag-lapel-pin-wearing cowards in either political party.
The pervasive accounting fraud in the attempt to prop up an unsound banking system is even closer to criticality. A society that produces tradable goods needs sound money which functions as 1) a medium of exchange, 2) a store of value 3) a unit of account for establishing prices. The combined accounting frauds in Federal Reserve policy, private banking and securities markets, and government fiscal management is destroying all these functions. The more abstracted finance gets from real productive activity, the more fragile the system becomes. We are doing nothing now except adding more complexity and abstraction to it, causing the system to become more detached from reality. In effect, we’re opting to forego an economy based on goods in favor of one based on empty promises and paper swindles. The potential and probable consequent destruction of nominal wealth would be an event that advanced technocratic society likely will not recover from — in the sense that today’s standard of living could be preserved for billions of people worldwide. That destruction would herald a new dark age, this time without any prospect of recovery via the exploitation of natural resources, which will have been depleted.
The ObamaCare piece of the picture is a mere pathetic soap opera compared to the first two quandaries. The 2000-page law did nothing to address the core tragedy of medicine in America — namely, that it has evolved into a hideous hostage racket. You go to a hospital with a terrifying illness and you are susceptible to fleecing by the so-called “care-givers” for the promise that you may get to live. No prices for treatment are ever discussed. They are presumed to be astronomical — but who cares if you end up dead, and if you do get to live, you’ll figure that out later. If you hold an insurance policy, these charges will be subject to a fake negotiation between grifting insurance companies and grifting hospitals, physicians, and drug companies. The price “settlements” are only slightly less a joke than the actual charges, and are obfuscated in documents designed to bewilder even well-educated policy-holders.
Even if you are insured, the charges may bankrupt you. A typical one-day charge for “room and board” in a non-specialized hospital in-patient bed runs $23,000 at my local hospital. For what? Half a dozen blood-pressure checks and three bad meals? You can be sure that ever-fewer families will be able to fork over $12,000-a-year for basic coverage. The ObamaCare legislation and its laughable rollout of a useless website is just a punctuation mark at the end of the soap opera script. The result eventually will be the complete implosion of the medical racket and a return to a very primitive clinic system, with payment in chickens or cords of stove-wood. The smaller number of surviving humans will surely enjoy better health, and greater piece of mind, when this monster racket expires of inertia, bad faith, and deceit.
These efforts to manage runaway hyper-complexity with more complexity are guaranteed to fail. Our prime task at this moment in history is managing contraction, and the means for doing that would be simplifying, not adding layers of complication larded with fraud, pretense, and mendacity.

Why have other nations managed to achieve national health care?
I got private insurance in Spain, as a non-citizen on a work visa, for $30 per month in the 80s. It’s not much more now. Without a military-industrial complex and a for-profit insurance-industrial complex, Spain covers all its citizens and tamps down revolution.
I guess you could argue that with 53% of the youth unemployed, they SHOULD rebel.
I’m an American living in Spain. I’ve been here on and off for 30 years. I became a Spanish citizen years ago. We have public health coverage and nothing we’ve ever used it for has ever involved any additional charges (hospital births, appendix operations, colonoscopy, magnetic resonance tests, visits with specialists such as dermatologists, gynocologists, doctor visits as often as needed, and a long list of etceteras. We cannot imagine living without this. The quality of life and peace of mind this system provides us with has been enormous for me, my family and most people I know here. Our taxes contribute to funding the system. The government at present has instituted severe cutbacks in healthcare (and education and other services as well) and the country has very serious problems on all levels…But even now the healthcare we receive and have received during 30 years, at no additional cost, is worth everything we’ve been through to live here. Plain and simple. There are people, many people, who opt for private health insurance or some combination of the two systems, but so far we haven’t felt the need to do this and are extremely grateful and fortunate. The United States must figure out a way to provide this essential, human, civilized and humane service to all people within its borders.

In Canada, where I live, it was figured out quite a few years ago. It started in Saskatchewan under Premier Tommy Douglas. At first the doctors wouldn’t have anything to do with it and went on strike. But the protesting didn’t last long, and now we have it in every province. I am low-income and when I need to see a doctor I pay zilch, nada. And there are no premiums to be paid if you are low-income. For people with higher incomes the premiums are quite reasonable. Unfortunately I don’t get dental care or eyeglasses covered , but everything else including hospitalization is taken care of. I never see a bill. If I see a naturopath or some other kind of “alternative” practitioner, only a portion of it is covered, but a lot of people have extended health plans at their workplaces that do cover the extras. So why can’t the richest country in the world figure it out?
I don’t think it is matter of ignorance, of not being able to figure out. how to provide healthcare to our citizens. It is a question of priorities, and apparently spending obscene amounts of money to basically “make the world safe for business” via the “defense” department takes precedence.
One of the neat things bout how medicare started in Canada was that it originated as a cooperative enterprise between the doctors of the Swift Current, SK rural municipality (more or less like a country) and the RM, paid by local taxes. It actually was a “win-win”, as the doctors there back in 1947 had seen the worst of the depression and getting a moderate but real cash income was a plus for them going forward. But the bigger city docs in Regina and Saskatoon didn’t share their enthusiasm.
I think if the United States could start medicare on a smaller level and get the wheels rolling that way, it would likely work effectively. But, it takes good will and and selflessness on the part of the medical profession and these days I doubt that enough of that exists in Saskatchewan, let alone the U.S. Health care today is more like an industry than a profession, and even the doctors are not really in charge of it, they are like the cast of an ongoing soap opera that is ultimately driven by money. In Canada too.
I am happy to be in Canada, but I can see that our health care is trending toward unaffordability. We are just fooled for the moment by the notion that its free, but nothing is really free. As the costs rise at a faster rate then economic growth we too will see economic rationing take hold.
Also more people are getting older and requiring expensive care to stay alive, and some of them don’t even want to be kept alive but the courts say they have to be. Eventually this kind of care will become too costly and this will change, hopefully before I decide my time here on Earth is up. I’ve heard the majority of health care costs are incurred during the last six months of a person’s life.
Sometimes people make what appear to be bizarre end-of-life choices. I was treating a patient with terminal stomach cancer who wanted to be put on Total Parenteral Nutrition (TPN, or intravenous feeding). Why? Because he desperately wanted to grasp on to a few more days of (increasingly uncomfortable) life? Because he thought it was the “normal” thing to do at the end of life? Because his family expected it so he complied? Because it was “free”? All of the above? I really don’t know. Anyway, as the attending physician, I was obliged to set it up, but fortunately the dietician talked him out of it before the tubes went in.
One weakness in Jim’s argument is this statement:

This is certainly true of many of the earth’s resources. We are now well into so-called “tertiary extraction” mode for oil and natural gas…the low hanging, and cheap, stuff is long gone.
However, renewable energy sources — solar, wind (solar converted to large scale movement of air) and others have NOT been depleted…they barely been tapped yet.
And the act of deploying, for example, solar panels at your house or business is pretty much an off-the-shelf acquisition of parts…construction takes very little time compared, say, to building a coal or nuclear power plant.
Lastly, there are no emissions during operation. So, with sufficient deployment, carbon levels could eventually begin coming down.
Now I know, since I’ve read (and bought) everything by Jim, he’ll say I’m guilty of wishful thinking, but it is not wishing, it is simple math — today’s solar PV panels return five times as much energy during their 25 year warranty life as it takes to make them…so it is a sustainable path to the future, by definition.
Am I as hopeful that our political systems will toss off the corruption that has then captured by the fossil fuel interests? Not as much…

FOIST! Societies get complex not long before they fail. Reading Tacitus’ Annals now–in the first century of the Empire, the complexity was already too great, the system too perverted by cronyism and imperial overreach.

Maybe not better health with the current medical infrastructure totally gone with the wind but chickens and stove-wood will give a far better bang for the buck no question about that. Cannabis will probably be the strongest drug in a medical bag.
I’ll agree that the big issues are accounting fraud and spying both of which are incinerating that most important of externalities required for any civilization’s heart beat – TRUST.
It’s going to be a mess. More complexity and abstraction gets piled on a teetering tower of a system and when the fall comes it comes hard Society splinters in a thousand pieces with not a drop of glue to put it back together.
It could be different if there were a true patriot among the suit-wearing flag-lapel-pin-wearing motherfucking cowards but all their doing is having a smile wearing competition thinking that by rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic just the right way they get a spot in a lifeboat.

What Janos means is that our current circumstance is not accidental. By corollary, Janos implies that there really is another “way” out of this, and I would definitely agree. It’s called, believe it or not, an “Aristocracy.” Aristocracy, in its original meaning, meant “rule by the best.” But “by the best” does not mean “by the richest” or “by those with the biggest clubs.”
But back to Janos’ comment. I think Janos is suggesting to beware of faux “discovery.” There remains the great probability that we are being herded into a mindset that we think we “discovered” and this perceived “discovery” deludes us into thinking it’s the only rational course of action.
This week’s essay is a brute force exposition that lays out the delayed consequences you alluded to in last week’s masterpiece of well-turned phrases. One of them is the death of the two major parties. That has not happened before in the U.S.; only one party has died at a time, and it’s always been the opposition to the Democrats, whether it’s the Federalists or the Whigs. This time, the Republicans seem to be suffering a crisis, enough that the two major factions are at war with each other and the party as a whole is suffering as a result. Consequently, five Michigan GOP congressmen are in danger of losing their seats.

As for the Democrats dying, it could happen, but the party survived being on the wrong side of the Civil War. Things would have to get much worse for them to die, too. Of course, that’s rather the point, isn’t it?
Yes, the Democrats were on the wrong side of the Civil War as far as the North was concerned. But when the southern states began to re-enter the Union after the war, the tide of the party turned. This was an anomaly that will not likely be repeated.
There aren’t two parties, just a duopoly that is but two sides of the same (increasingly worthless) coin. And it’s the duopoly itself, meaning the USG, that must go, the failure of our vaunted experiment in federative government being complete and only awaiting the same Just Say No that our former Soviet counterparts engaged in a couple decades ago.

the ACA was written for college educated professionals knocking down $100,000 plus per year, and those below the poverty line. for those of us who inhabit the nether regions populated by the great unwashed a hospital stay of any kind will bankrupt us. even a $10,000 debt is crippling, besides the fact we can’t afford to take off work in the first place, seeing as how most of us are a paycheck or two away from homelessness.
the ACA is a cruel joke which serves the intelligentsia and the destitute, but only puts an aditional burden on those already struggling to make neds meet.
I feel your focus is misplaced.
Please review your comments in the light of the fact that the ACA was written by “health” insurance “providers” (actually, deniers). Handing over a giant customer base, by MANDATE, to be sucked dry by shysters. The ACA assured the survival of these vampires, when they should have been forced to struggle for their customers against a non-profit, single-payer entity. That would have crushed most of them.
This blaming of the intellectuals and the poor is a tactic of decidedly cruel agendas [as history shows].
A small correction.
Educated professionals knocking down $100,000 plus per year does not make an intellectual. It is not a sufficient or even necessary requirement. Intellectuals for the most part are not treated well in our society. The requirement to be an intellectual is to think and never stop. Rocking of the boat inevitably results as it should.

the point i was attempting to make is that a family making 100 grand, whether 1 or 2 wage earners, can probably afford insurance, and the poor most definitely can’t. it’s the working poor, the working lower (middle?) class who will take it on the chin.

Yes there should be two systems: public and private. This trying to mix the two – with endless exemptions for Obama’s buddies – is a disaster. The two fold system was one of the high points of European style Socialism.

Bread and games but less bread and more games as the clock ticks on to the criticality threshold. There is absolutely no incentive or imagination to deviate from the program. Though we bemoan an uncontrolled crash-dive, cork-screwing into the earth, that’s what we’re about to get, rather than taking the brave choice to shut down the engines and manage a nerve-wracking Sully Sullenberger glide into the Hudson.

Done and done, JHK. Just how much more abstracted from reality can this system become? We’re already well past this point, so I don’t understand why you continue to write as if we weren’t. Seems to me this nation and its people have been rather content living in a state of surreality for better than 30 years, but somehow, now, all this exceptionalism and excellent living is coming to an end? I’m not so sure that the tragedy that is contemporary industrial existence is nearing collapse; that would be something like poetic justice, and I don’t think the species has earned that level of grace. Nope, your prediction of a long emergency is far from being answered by an unmitigated collapse scenario. In fact, with regard to the U.S. and its cohort of elitist 1st world plunderers, the ability to continue extricating energy and introducing poison back to the environment in return has likely been ensured for a good clip longer, what with that dastardly technology we all hate to love doing exactly what we wish it couldn’t.
I guess there are two reasons why I’ll personally go out on a limb and say that 2014 will, in the words of Gerald Celente, be more of the same just worse (and with no collapse):
First, the U.S. has been mostly dethroned as a hegemonic force, which will oddly have the impact of actually speeding the voracious devouring of remaining energy resources, as competitor countries scale up their consumption in the new emerging Mega Economy, absent any moderating force such as WWIII. But we can cross our fingers for that anyway. Lastly, the “smart” ones who’ve carefully stashed whatever it ends up taking to escape into cyber consciousness and or the cosmos will unremorsefully abandon a hot, toxic, and putrid planet Earth like a used prophylactic.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for collapse, WWIII, and mass human extinction, but I don’t see any of it happening early enough to redeem us. No, as you’ve said, “Life is Tragic” and not necessarily because it ends too soon, but rather because it goes on long enough. Economic Collapse would be too good of an ending to the farce of our own willful indulgence. Now, Near Term (human) Extinction, that’d be something approaching poetry, but we’ll just have to see what Nature has in store.

The most amusing part of the article is where the moron that wrote it claims that the chinese view the Russians eith an elder sister status. Until the fall of the USSR the Chinese devoted well over half of the Army to there Russian Chinese border areas. Well, maybe not all. Some of us actually believe that PM’s are the only store of value that does not have a counterclaim against it. I for one could not care less what dollar, yen, ruble, Euro, or whatever reference presently exists or do I care what future currency reference may exist, although I have faith that there will be a reference. So yes it all goes back to a form of faith, which is not rational.
As for betting on collapse I perceive PM’s to be a form of insurance based on the faith above. I don’t relish the notion. I’d rather be 8 years old again and a believer in the infinite possibilities of myself and the universe.
Real Estate in the USA has a State claim against it. Dollars in the bank are the property of the bank and can be rehypothecated by the bank to cover their losses. Maybe securities in your possession are in fact yours – like PM’s – but it seems to me you must defend your claim from the predations of others while hoping that the partial ownership of the corporate enterprise will have future value. That requires faith in management, markets, and countless other factors.

The first is a photo of purported methane release due to decaying sub sea permafrost apparently underway now. I’m going to follow this to see whether it persists.

Kindly explain this $4,600 figure in more detail. Does this mean $4,600 of income per month? Or do you mean total assets like stocks, bank accounts, life insurance, etc. What state are you referring to?
I ask because on Oct 31st my wife and I are meeting with the local (central NJ) Medicaid Office to apply for Medicaid on behalf of my Mother-in-Law. We fear she may never recover sufficiently from her broken hip to spend her remaining years (months? days?) living in our home. She is 91. I spent a couple of days gathering/copying myriad documents related to both assets and income but I have no idea what the thresholds are.
With Medicaid we may be able to get her into one of those awful nursing homes where the stench of urine when you come through the front door to visit your old relative could knock a buzzard off a shit pile. In 1995 my own mother expired at age 84 in such a place in Florida.
Can’t she get Medicare if she’s that old?

Yes, she has Medicare coverage but that only lasts for some limited amount of time. Medicare pays for a limited time in, for example, a rehab facility but doesn’t pay for ongoing institutionalization in a nursing home. That is paid for by the money one has accumulated over a lifetime and/or by Medicaid which is a more permanent program, if I understand correctly. I’ll know more by noon on Thursday.

Every 5 seconds or so she would stop looking at the camera (i.e. her audience) and would look down in the vicinity of her right hand. I kept thinking maybe she was simultaneously checking her email, tweeting or text messaging someone. My daughter does the same thing when I have a conversation with her. I watched 60 minutes interview last night with James Morrell, the recently retired deputy chief of the CIA. He re-iterated the mantra of Snowden as a traitor to his country. But, one has to ask how bizarre the critical data access controls were effected at the NSA that a fairly new contractor was able to access all that data in the first place. For instance Morrell stated that Snowden was able to access information that was normally reserved only for the highest echelon of NSA and CIA management. Stuff like proejct rankings for grwoth or elimination that they would only discuss in a lead lined room, with nobody allowed in with a cell phone.
So, who was the real culprit here? I understand that there are close to a million people, most of them contractors, not even career employees of the government, who have supposedly “top secret” security clearance. Is this for real? If it wasn’t so serious it would make a great Monty Python skit.

I’m about 2/3’s through – even though I’d much rather read a transcript. The Horsemen thus far are Banking, Terrorism, and Resources – so not what one might expect.
This was a well made doc. For an apparently recent film it does tread familiar ground, not a whole lot of new or really penetrating information but dead on even so. It’s soft partiality to the Classical Capitalism model espoused by Smith and then twisted by Friedman in Neoclassic adaptation was a bit too simplistic, but still reasonable. I just don’t understand the tendency of some who suggest, somehow, if only we could go back to a pure form of whatever social ideology one might name, things would be better. There’s no going backward and I’m sure the voices presented in the film understand this. Clinging to old ideas is a recipe for extinction in every case.

I watched the whole thing and the four horsemen are.

I agree with you that is was a well made documentary and worth watching. Dead on it was and while for you and I it treads familiar ground for others it may not. It does focus on a return to classical economic theory and the elimination of fiat currency as the solution to our problems overall which I agree is simplistic.
That said I found after the initial economics lesson it just got better and better. The presentations by the deep the thinkers, the quotes, and the background knowledge given make it worth watching all by itself. I’d give it 4.5 stars out of 5. I say that not just because it has several dogs which I hold in very high esteem in it. The points it makes are excellent.

Because there is some third party software on the site that allows youtubes to embed by just dropping a youtube URL in place of the youtube embed code which is the more typical way of doing it. I looked at the raw HTML on the site when it was changed to the new format some time ago which is why I can answer the question.

Before the site changed format huge blocks of Chinese text were dropped on the site whenever a point of view critical to existing power structure was presented making any such dissenting point of view impossible to see without great effort. The new format makes it harder for such activity to happen.

Been reading a recent edition of The Sunflower. The Jews have an idea I kind of like: that murder cannot be forgiven since the only one who can forgive is the victim who is no longer around. Just had an idea for your situation. My Dad went to a Catholic Nursing Home. No smell of urine at all. The staff was really nice. I wouldn’t be surprised if they do a much better job than most others at the same price levels. They always had that tradition in education – with even atheists and prods sending their kids to their schools.
I bet you could find something like this in New York or Phillie – assuming they still have their own Catholic Health Care systems. Obviously look for mostly White nurses. A few Haitian Catholics are fine as long as they are kept up to standard by the Irish and Italians.

Thought I’d share my recent experiences with Obamacare and health insurance. We have AARP insurance via Aetna, and were notified in April that they would not offer anything in California starting 1/1/14. Good riddance. My advice, don’t by any insurance through AARP because its a racket that just adds another layer of bullshit to medical insurance. Since my husband retired from Intel, we’ve been paying $1,500 a month for a family of 4.
The good news is that at least in California, the online system is working fine. We have two options: Kaiser or Anthem Blue Cross. It looks like we’ll be paying $900 a month for Blue Cross. Seems like a good deal to me. Friends have registered through the CA website and no one has reported any problems. Our only other option is Intel’s retirement health insurance, which costs $2800 per month.

Here in Oz new parties can be formed easilky and registered and gain a place on the ballot paper and sometime win seats and influence governments if they complie with the” electoral laws”which are quite strictly enforced…failure to do that can involve jailing
The Greens .,,,after two decades of growth get about 10% of the total vote and have 10 senators in a Senate of 76 members..and some seats in all state legislatures
We also have times when single independents can win a lower house seat if popular locally …in a recent time we had a Labor Govt federally depending on the votes of several of a half dozen “independent :Members of the HoReps…and it survived the full 3 year term in that basis
About 2o% of the entire national; vote at the recent election went to minor parties,,,the Labor/Conservative/ parties shared the other 80% of the total votes between them
All this makes for a more vibrant demoicracy

Voting in Oz is compulsory and one is fined $50 for not voting…one can turn up at the polling booth/station on the day or vote early in the 14 days prior…or have a postal vote…no machines are used,though the “roll” of voters is on computor when one goes to vote.. but one votes.on a paper ballot for House and Senate

Greens who won one of the Six senate seats in my state
They have a range of progressive policies on the environment and social issues and are to the left of the Labor Party which had held govt for two terms with Green support in House and Senate

Not advocating one way or another here but I’m thinking if we had such a fine in America the current drive towards having an exclusively postal vote system sans voting booths would have to stop. In my opinion that would be a good thing.
How can a nation expect to develop a voting habit in the young when all voting is done via the mails such as is the case where I live in King County WA. As no example is being set a nation that does not vote must surely result.
It would be nice to have more vibrant minor parties in the US, but if our system gave minor parties a better shot, it wouldn’t help much if it is just batshit crazy minor parties like the Greens and Libertarians. They make the Democrats and Republicans almost look halfway sane.

You can no longer just show up, fill out an application, talk to the foreman, and start the next day. A few decades ago I did just that, headed south thru Virginia, read in a local paper that they were hiring at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, applied, talked to the boss, and two days later started working as a welder’s helper. And this was at a DoD facility. No more. Now you have to apply on-line. Then if you’re lucky its 1, 2, or 3 interviews, Blood Test, Piss Test, Drug Test, Psychological workup, Credit check, Homeland Security investigation, FBI background check, State Police background Check, Local Police background Check, check your references, check former employers, fingerprinting, eye scanning, can you prove you’re a citizen?, Drivers License investigation etc … After all that, then, and only then, can you begin making sandwiches a Subway or Quizmos.

It’s obvious that any conversation we might have regarding the above wouldn’t go very far and could only end in acrimony………so, let me change the subject completely.
A few days ago you mentioned trying to teach yourself a programming language called Python. How is that going?
It got me interested enough to google it and look at various tutorials. One was titled something like “teach yourself Python in 24 hours.” I went to it and up came 24 blocks (I think). Presumably each block was going to be one hour of the 24 hours. I clicked on the first block which essentially told me to read an entire book by so-and-so. I went no further.
I will provide the link I’m speaking of in a separate post to follow momentarily.
Probably right I did see a NOVA documentary early this summer on Netflix which showed that the NSA was fully monitoring Bin Lauden’s communications between Yemen and Afghanistan prior to 911 and that the NSA had actually tracked a couple of the hijackers who upon entering the U.S. would only provide the FBI with their first and not last names.
NOVA documentaries are not usually considered batshit crazy but enough of that.
It’s going well enough. It is hard to find a good tutorial that matches my skill level which is rather high. I’m using Dive Into Python 3. For me knowing 3 will be better than knowing 2. I can already program in traditional languages well but never paid attention to scripting languages as I should have and now need to pick one up to improve my job prospects.
Going well but I find so many other things interesting that it is hard to stay on task.
Then there are the zillion things I should be doing around the doghouse.

PCR is a very interesting man. I too wonder how he looks back upon his service under Reagan. From listening to him I sense that he feels a deep sense of remorse and turmoil about it, while at the same time he is proud of his work combating stagflation. He was young and idealistic and likely didn’t realize that Regan’s mind was quickly turning to mush during his presidency and therefore didn’t realize he was being co-opted. I don’t know much about Reagan era politics, but from what little I’ve seen from old media it is very clear that he was a corny old fart by the time he took office. It seems too that voters back then were just as susceptible to soaring rhetoric as they were when Obama hit the scene. Glad I don’t vote; the embarrassment of such choices would be unbearable.
Anyhow, I never took 9/11 *Troofers* very seriously until PCR recently suggested a look at the latest film to be made on the matter with a link on his site. At the very least the film raises legitimate questions for which the American people should have all along demanded answers. Nevertheless, I don’t think 9/ll will ever be settled.

Well i bought a copy of Bill McKibben’s new book ‘Honey and Oil’. Quite a catchy title. I didn’t know much about him — I have seen him mentioned here a time or two — but I’ve found out he is a pretty important guy. How do i know? He told me himself, in the book. He hangs out with Governors, hikes with Billionaire Hedge Fund Managers, Pals up with Al Gore and his bank account of $500 million, consorts with world leaders and heads of great religions, is buddies with the Hollywood Elite, and jets around the world, non-stop it seems, to Copenhagen, Rio, Istanbul, India, London, LA and New York. He is engaged on the important mission of SAVING THE EARTH, which excuses all this energy devouring jet travel. McKibben is a prof at Middlebury College in VT,, where the American upper class pay $50,000 per year so there kids can learn what a shitty place the USA is. I attended a similar school, in Middletown CT, so I have an idea what its all about.
The crux of the book is political activism to stop the Keystone XL pipeline … God’s work in other words, and saving the planet from greedy and rapacious oil companies. There is an unspoken belief that, in this nation of 320 million, we do not need oil because it is easily replaceable with solar and wind. I don’t know if he really believes this. He never really explains how ordinary people in the North would heat their homes in winter without petroleum, or how enough electricity could be generated without coal. Maybe it doesn’t matter. Who gives a shit if Joe Blow and his family in Worchester is freezing to death in February when you are engaged in the important work of SAVING THE EARTH. See, its the idea that matters most, the beautiful theory, in this case eliminating oil that is causing global warming, and driving the oil companies out of business. While McKibben and his ilk fly to climate change conferences around the world, eat roast duck on Al Gores yacht, drink white wine in Norman Lears’ Fabulous LA Mansion (‘grandest house in America’), while $50,000 per year undergrads host films hammering Exxon and BP at Middlebury, the rest of us, the unenlightened, the nobodies, do what? … Huddle in the dark, freezing and starving, waiting for spring when we can get busy dirt farming, all the while worshipping Gaya, the precious Earth Mother?

Not only is environmental activism a political joke, but so to is the present state of agriculture. However, all is well, because after this particular joker persuades that current methods of farming are absolutely devastating to the environment. He hen oddly invokes the usual techno-fantasy to suggest implementing hybridized farming and irrigation techniques to maintain these highly taxing human populations. From the video its quite clear that the man realizes that agriculture conduces to runaway population explosion and even bigger problems to begin with, so I didn’t really know what the hell to make of his conclusion. He blows all the usual smoke about the need for collaboration among the vested and competing interests i.e, Enviro-activists, Big Ag, etc. It seems what damage we do in burning carbon to feed cars is nothing in comparison to what we burn to feed mouth breathers like Janos.

Back in the summer JHK revamped his site. In the old software one could write a comment with bolding, italics and blockquotes. In the new software one can ONLY create italics…at least that is my experience. Yet, every now and then someone mentions bolded words as in the excerpt above. As many times as I have inquired about this no one has ever given me a straight answer. Is it possible to bold words and if so, how? I have not seen a bolded word since the summer revamp.
I’m surprised the chief of the grammar police should not know this.

I recall many years go while traveling in some third world country, I took my wife (then my “girlfriend”) out to a fancy restaurant. (Women are like that—Sometimes you’ve gotta take ’em out to fancy restaurants.)

While feasting on a sumptuous, rich meal of glazed duck, wine, etc. a very large, insane, and very hungry homeless man passes by and sees us eating our feast. Of course, he loses it (in fact, he had “lost it” a long time ago) and starts pounding on the glass window with both fists. It freaked me out!

This is projecting things too much. The military apparatchiks are not yet sufficiently embarrassed. The invasion of privacy currently has people stuck in anger and being stuck in anger is not good. It could resolve in negative or positive change but it is too early to know how things will hammer out in the end.
A stink of apathy pervades the land. Will the anger lead to disgust and more apathy or will it cultivate passion and a demand for change?

We are not at the end and the military apparatchiks are alive and well. I don’t want to drop this issue until I get to the bottom of it.
As I stated previously, under JHK’s old site software I was able to use HTML to produce blockquotes, bolded words and italicized words. I did this using the very same Operating System and browser that I am using now. But NOW I am only able to produce italics.
K-Dog suggests that use of Internet Explorer (IE) “should be” the culprit. He uses Firefox and says he is able to produce both bold and italics.
Is anyone else out there amongst the commentariate using IE and experiencing what I am…. that is, no words appear in bolded font?
Secondly, is anyone else out there using Firefox (or an other browser except IE) and enjoying the same success that K-Dog describes……that is Bolding is working?

If it involved a small child or a helpless woman, then the circumstances would be different so as to warrant compassion. Some of you may not have carefully thought through the essence of compassion. A VISIT TO THE MIDDLESEX COUNTY BOARD OF SOCIAL SERVICES
I am a snob.
The time has come to publicly recognize a personality trait. And it is not as if this is something I have always known about myself. To the contrary, as a person who evolved from modest if not humble beginnings it is something of a surprise that at 72 years and 49 weeks of age I should finally have to “out” myself as a snob.
People like me are not made to endure the bedlam and the seething sea of humanity that queue up in federal, state and local government offices from the moment they open till close of every business day. Such degradation is for Leona Helmsley’s “little people” who have become inured from birth enduring government bureaucracy in their daily struggle to make it through life on the dole.
The horror begins as you walk from your distantly parked vehicle toward the office’s front door. In that vicinity are the people who still smoke without any sense that over the past decade or two they have become pariahs. To serve these smokers Social Services has installed unbelievably loud speakers outside which caused me to wince and reflexively cover my ears to prevent further eardrum damage (I am already half deaf) as I neared the entry door. The names being called out from the speaker as we passed were Juanita Alvarez and Letisha Holland.
The fact that my wife and I had a 10:30 am appointment and that we arrived at 10:29 was comical in its pedantic faith that such precision was necessary or appreciated in the least. The appointment could just as well have been stated as “come the morning of October 31st.”
Somehow in this seething mass we located a man whose title, I believe, was “Greeter.” He had a stylish several-day growth of beard and wore a spiffy sport jacket. He was trim, swarthy with black hair, and would have fit perfectly as a door person at a popular Hispanic night spot in New York City.
He put us in the queue in front of window 6. The place had at least 14 windows, perhaps more, and there was a door marked “Door A” that certain people were summoned to.
Eventually we reached the head of the line and our names were found on a printout of persons with appointments. A yellow magic marker drawn across our names signified our presence and we were asked to take a seat. It happened that there were two empty seats just one pace from where we stood and we took them.
Thus began a long wait with a front row seat where we could observe the passing scene. Each window was fitted with thick glass that had a round hole with a metal grill to speak through. This hole was at a perfect height for me (I am 6′ 1/2′) but set too high for the average client….many were short Mexican women. The person behind us in line was an old and infirm man of Asian extraction who at one time earlier in his life was probably 4 or 5 inches taller. He shouted upward toward the metal grated hole. I speculated to my wife that the thick glass was probably bullet-proof.
Every person who came into our view was worthy of a descriptive paragraph but I will mention only a few….after all, there are only so many electrons available in cyberspace.
First their was an angry black man who stood back several feet from the window, milled around impatiently, and spoke loudly to a Hispanic girl on the other side of the glass saying “let’s keep this professional now”… “do it real professional” etc. She waived him in the direction of another window and backed away with a look of fear. He kept yelling about keeping it professional. In the course of a few minutes he presented himself angrily at all windows from 4 through 8 and finally tossed under the glass at #4 a clip board on which a form he had filled out was attached.
A light skinned black girl, estimated age 19, carried a baby boy on her hip toward window 8 and a little girl (age 3?) ran up and shyly hugged her right leg.
A short woman with hair dyed a dirty blond walked by. A distant ancestor might have helped construct Machu Pichu.
Reflected in the glass window all the way to the back wall was a figure in a tightly enclosing hoodie. He wore shades and I would not have been the least surprised to see him pull out an AK 47 and open fire. He didn’t, of course.
Lastly, Rachel Jeantel’s near double stepped to window 8. The girth of each upper thigh was at minimum 40 inches. The words “NFL Offensive lineperson” came to mind.

I think that the most productive way to show Compassion is to treat oneself and others with a certain degree of Respect.
For example, show love to others. Give to peaceful panhandlers, say positive words of encouragement to people doing positive things. Don’t encourage Evil by showing weakness to dangerous people. Don’t give in to Evil by keeping quiet. Don’t abuse the meaning of words by calling people who are generally not racists “racist”. (America is NOT a racist country. We have a black President, for God’s sake!) Don’t call Slavery Freedom; Don’t call War “peace”, etc.
Don’t let people tell you that “Nigga” is a good word if a black person uses it, but a bad word if a white person uses it. Don’t let people tell you that “dog” is a good word to describe a male because black people call themselves “dogs” and “bitchas”.
The meaning of words is not determined by the skin pigmentation of the speaker. Don’t let them turn the U.S. into a mental sewer.
What is racism? Can we know anything about racism if we can’t even define it? I find that it is purposely kept vague – like being charged with witchcraft. As it is now, it can mean anything the Elite want it to mean – thus making it a broad and deadly threat that keeps Whites in line. So that’s one of the meanings of racism – namely shut up Whitey.

I was struck by the amazing professionalism (to the point of friendliness, even) of multiple nurses of both major genders and a couple of major races.
But my enduring memory will be spending several hours in a recovery room, listening to LOUD, nearly non-stop, Spanish gabble from the group across the hall. There were posted signs all around saying – IN BOLD BLOCK LETTERS – that ONLY TWO ADULTS were allowed per room and per patient.
Well, there were three adults next door, including one bitch (deliberate insult intended, Pucker) who hardly stopped talking for the whole endless afternoon. There was also a high-spirited 3 year old male over there. He performed strange gutteral resonances for the assembled gatherings.
When he got too loud, I was able to get him to hush for a little while by saying, SHHHHHH! Apparently, I am bi-lingual for shusshing noises.
Weird thing is, none of the nurses or staff ever told any of them to quiet down. And they never tried too enforce the two adults ONLY per patient rule.
Too friendly? Certainly not too profession.
Genuine professionals would enforce rules for ALL patients.

Yes, dogs are man’s-best-friend (woman’s too!) in many cases.

Worship of the religion of competition and money gives rise to the first catchphrase in our runaway market driven economy and it prevents adoption of solutions until ‘technology catches up’; a side effect of the stupidity of the market.
An example is we can’t have electric cars until we have cheap lithium ion batteries even though existing technology will make an electric car that meets basic needs now. The fear of competition from new technology prevents it. Adoption of the better faster cheaper mantra might be inevitable in a runaway market driven economy but it also means that because good enough is never enough we will soon wind up with not enough. And no cars at all.
And in an attempt to relate it to this weeks; Two Forces and Three Bears we have:

A car using edison cells or normal lead acid batteries can be made with a top speed of say fifty miles an hour and a range of about 60 miles. And you’d have to charge it all night.
This would force contraction but after the squeeze something of a normal lifestyle would shake out in the end. A lifestyle with much less energy use per capita and a reduced CO2 footprint. Kids could get to school and people could get to work.
Once upon a time families only had one car and had to plan trips. Some could even say they were happier then than now with socially connected and simpler lifestyles.
Cities would resemble JHK’s dream of an urban landscape.
And that’s better than no lifestyle at all.

Social Services continued…
Lest I give an erroneous impression by way of omission, there were white people present in the building other than my wife and me. Perhaps 25% of the working SS staff were white and I saw one white “customer.” There may have been others. He (the white customer) appeared to be a street person: swarthy from exposure, 5 days of salt and pepper stubble, randomly missing teeth and greasy light brown hair on which an egg could be fried without it sticking, with a stringy 5″ pony tail. My guess is he was stuck in a pot-induced late ’70s time warp, never to escape. As for my wife and me, we were very much out of our usual element and the sight of a woman knitting had me listening for the sound of tumbrel wheels over cobblestone coming to take us away.
We rose and entered the inner sanctum behind Door A.
Small offices, most with their doors open, each with a staff person and a customer, flanked either side of a hallway that disappeared like railroad tracks to a vanishing point at the horizon….or so was my first impression. We were led far down to an office on the right and were greeted by Cindy, a nondescript 50ish white woman. I observed aloud how busy the place was. She said “you should see it on Mondays.” My wife found an opportunity to attempt a gentle brown-nose by telling Cindy that she reminded her, especially her hair, of a dear cousin Paulette in Denver. If you the reader need reminding, the purpose of this trip to Social Services was to see if my aged mother-in-law, currently in a rehab facility with a broken hip (and doing none too well, btw), would qualify for Medicaid in the event she is unable to live out her life in our home and must be put in a nursing home.
An initial phone call resulted in an appointment a few weeks hence. Later a letter arrived from Social Services spelling out in great detail 16 items of photocopied financial and other data that one must bring with them. It begins with (#1) Social Security Card, includes (#10) BANK ACCOUNT STATEMENTS ON ALL ACCOUNTS FOR THE LAST SIX MONTHS AND THE LAST THREE YEARS FEDERAL TAX RETURNS INCLUDING ALL SCHEDULES AND ATTACHMENTS, and (#14) Prepaid funeral contract and burial accounts (itemized breakdown), to name but three examples.
As luck would have it, I am an expert at a task such as this. Gathering, understanding and presenting financial data is how I made my living for 45+ years. And so, we arrived with a perfect package of data in duplicate, one copy for them and one for us, including a typed out set of explanatory notes covering all 16 items.
Cindy never took the big clip off this thick package of documents. Once she learned from me verbally that Mom had $28K in liquid assets it was ballgame over. The threshold is $2,000. We would need to “spend down” the $28K to $2,000 or less on legitimate (and documented) health care expenditures such as hearing aids, dentures, visiting nurse services, etc. before applying for Medicaid. The other threshold, monthly income, which might disqualify an applicant, is $2,130. Mom fell comfortably below this number so no problem there.
Cindy handed back my expertly prepared package of documentation (a two day effort) and wished us good day.

I’m going to keep looking into the idea that graduation from Harvard or Yale defines most of our “aristocratic elite,” as policy makers in the upper levels of the Federal govt.
I believe all of the Supremes, all recent Fed Reserve heads, and all presidents since Reagan – graduated from that Gateway to Aristocracy.
So – how is attendance/graduation at those two institutions determined?
First – family connections. Second comes a veneer of “merit” along with thicker veneer of “diversity.”
It would be interesting to see the statistics on those who are admitted to Harvard/Yale, who drop out before achieving the degree. And it would be VERY interesting to hear some of their stories.

Ingredients
11/2 tbsps vegetable oil
12 cooked german sausages (links assorted fully)
1 white onion (thinly sliced)
2 apples (crisp red, gala or braeburn cored and cut into 12 inch slices)
1/4 cup apple cider
1 lb sauerkraut
3 sour pickle (quartered for serving)
1 kirby cucumber (peeled and sliced lengthwise into eighths for serving)
mustards (assorted, serving)
Steps:

Heat a 12-inch skillet over medium heat, and add 1 tablespoon oil. Halve sausages lengthwise if desired. Cook until browned and heated through, about 3 minutes per side. Transfer to a plate, and cover to keep warm.

Add remaining tablespoon of oil to skillet if necessary. Add onion, and cook for 3 minutes. Add apples, stir, and cook until softened, 6 to 7 minutes. Stir in cider, and cook for 1 minute. Add sauerkraut, and heat until warmed through, about 2 minutes.

Transfer sauerkraut to a warm serving platter, and top with the sausages. Serve with pickles, cucumber, and mustards. (Sausages and sauerkraut can be kept warm, covered, in a 250-degree oven for up to an hour.)
