So, former FBI lawyer Lisa Page declined to testify before a congressional committee because she didn’t feel like it. Apparently we’re now a rule-of-law-optional nation. Until recently, we were merely reality-optional. That was fun, but when officers of the country’s leading law enforcement agency go optional on standard legal procedure, like answering subpoenas, then we’re truly in the land where anything goes (and nothing matters).
After two years of Trump-inspired hysteria, it’s pretty obvious what went on in the bungled Obama-Hillary power handoff of 2016 and afterward: the indictable shenanigans of candidate Hillary and her captive DNC prompted a campaign of agit-prop by the US Intel “community” to gaslight the public with a Russian meddling story that morphed uncontrollably into a crusade to make it impossible for Mr. Trump to govern. And what’s followed for many months is an equally bungled effort to conceal, deceive, and confuse the issues in the case by Democratic Party partisans still in high places. It was very likely begun with the tacit knowledge of President Obama, though he remained protected by a shield of plausible deniability. And it was carried out by high-ranking officials who turned out to be shockingly unprofessional, and whose activities have been disclosed through an electronic data evidence trail.
Mr. Trump’s visit to confer with Russian President Putin in Helsinki seems to have provoked a kind of last-gasp effort to keep the increasingly idiotic Russian election meddling story alive — with Robert Mueller’s ballyhooed indictment of twelve “Russian intel agents” alleged to have “hacked” emails and computer files of the DNC and Hillary’s campaign chairman John Podesta. The gaping holes in that part of the tale have long been unearthed so I’ll summarize as briefly as possible:
1) the bandwidth required to transfer the files has been proven to be greater than an internet hack might have conceivably managed in the time allowed and points rather to a direct download into a flash drive device. 2) the DNC computer hard drives, said to be the source of the alleged hacking, disappeared while in the custody of the US Intel Community (including the FBI). 3) the authenticity of the purloined emails by Mr. Podesta and others has never been disputed, and they revealed a lot of potentially criminal behavior by them. 4) Mr. Mueller must know he will never get twelve Russian intel agents into a US courtroom, so the entire exercise is a joke and a fraud. In effect, he’s indicted twelve ham sandwiches with Russian dressing.
Tragically, the American public is led to take this ploy seriously by a morally compromised news media, especially CNN and the The New York Times. The latter outfit is so afflicted with a case of the Russian meddling vapors that it ran this laughable headline at the top of its front page yesterday: “Just Sitting Down With Trump, Putin Comes Out Ahead.” Gosh, what’s the message there? Don’t even bother talking to foreign heads of state, especially in the interest of improving relations?
The salient question that persons in authority might ask out-loud is how come so many officers of the Intel Community have not been hauled in front of grand juries to answer for their obviously incriminating behavior. Mr Mueller is perhaps too busy chasing Russian phantoms to draw up a bill of particulars against characters such as former CIA chief (now CNN shill) John Brennan, who apparently orchestrated the early chapters of the Russian meddling ruse, Bruce and Nellie Ohr, who ushered the DNC’s Steele Dossier into the FBI’s warrant machinery, fired FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe, who managed the Steele Dossier and its spinoff mischief as an “insurance policy” against Mr. Trump, Peter Strzok, who executed the “insurance policy,” and, of course, Ms. Page, his paramour, who decided that testifying before Congress was beneath her dignity. These and probably many others.
Tragically, also, these matters can only be fully corrected by the very Department of Justice that includes under its management the rogue FBI. Who else can formally and legally bring these cases before grand juries? The DOJ appears intent on preventing that from ever happening. Congress has so far omitted enforcing its subpoenas or using its impeachment power to dislodge obdurate DOJ officials. Mr. Trump, for now apparently, has declined to use his inherent executive powers to clean out this rats nest, say by removing secrecy shields from many of the documents at issue in the DOJ’s possession — most likely because he can’t afford to be seen “meddling” in the tangled proceedings. The net result of all this subterfuge, inaction, and gaslighting, is the defeat of the rule-of-law generally in American life. This ought to be taken seriously. If it’s asking too much of the system, then the system itself will eventually not be taken seriously, and that will be the end of the republic as we knew it.
Postscript: I’m advised that Lisa Page did finally testify in closed session while I was out of the country last week. However, it took an extraordinarily long time for her to comply with the request, as detailed in this Tweet from Rep. Mark Meadows.
Post-postscript: Cable TV turned into a madhouse Monday night with CNN’s Erin Burnett and MSNBC’s Chris Mathews beating the war drums like Comanches waiting on a wagon train. Putin, they screamed, is the criminal head of a hostile foreign power. If they say so, it must be true. John Brennan, ex-CIA chief, calls Mr. Trump’s behavior “treasonous” for doubting the veracity of seventeen intelligence agencies. To me, that suggests that the US has got too many intelligence agencies and that they may be a bigger threat to liberty in America than anything that Russia has done or is doing to us.

Indicted doesn’t mean convicted, for one. And two, I wonder if the inability to get the people they are indicting into a courtroom means that a trial will never take place. A trial also might be a bit messy, when people start to take oaths and pre-trial discovery starts to happen.

If we strike first, Russia would only be able to launch 4300 nuclear warheads in response. On day one, 99.9% of Russians would be dead, but we would only lose 99.8%. Even though the fallout would kill everyone left alive in the USA, Canada and Mexico in 3 days, it would take the better part of a week for nuclear winter to end all life on the planet. Yeah, that chart he shows is spot-on. Dealing with smaller firms, groups, and organizations seems like the only way to go, if you can do it. As soon as organizations hit Dunbar’s number, or a small multiple, things start to get sclerotic. There are few charts out there on universities, showing the rise of administrative staff vs number of students; the trend just keeps going up.

Our host mentioned CNN and the New York Times. He probably should have also mentioned Vox and PBS. The former explained how Russian trolls weaponized social media and the latter is likely to earn a News and Documentary Emmy nomination or two for “Putin’s Revenge” on Frontline. Who knows, Vox might earn a News and Documentary Emmy nomination also.
If Frontline on PBS not only earns a nomination but also a win for “Putin’s Revenge,” it wouldn’t be the first time anti-Russian sentiment in the media lead to an award. I thought “Faces, Places” would win Best Documentary Feature at this year’s Oscars. Instead, the award went to “Icarus,” a movie about Russian sports doping. The following was my analysis of the reasons for its win.
“Voting for ‘Icarus’ not only recognized a great piece of documentary film-making, but sent a message of disapproval to Putin and Russia, not just about the doping, but about his interfering in the election on behalf of Trump. No other nominee could have done that, not ‘Strong Island’ even with its ‘Black Lives Matter’ message, not ‘Abacus’ with its own anti-racist theme, not ‘Last Men in Aleppo,’ and certainly not the apolitical ‘Faces, Places.’ I had a hunch that might happen, but followed the data, which suggested an entirely different outcome. Sometimes, I have to examine my assumptions in order to understand things. As I’ve written before about awards shows, electorates matter, and the Oscar electorate was mad at Trump and Putin.”

If the discussion of a subject of major interest is uncomfortable, to sanctioned points of view discussion will be diverted to a never-ending “divide and conquer” debate, the subject being race, religion or another such polarizing issue, the discussion made as unsavory as possible to kill subsequent conversation.

I got a visit from two FBI duds when I was an Assistant Professor of Linguistics at Fresno State College [for the Criminally Inane] in 1967. They wanted to know about my antiwar protests, along with the Fresno Resistance, Joan Baez being one of the leaders (all the while I was taking Uncle’s dime for a US/AID ‘Scholarship for Leadership’ project involving South Vietnamese students).

From that point onward I assumed that I was being monitored, and tailored all mail, phone calls and personal contacts accordingly. I also stayed away from windows at night, in case some Valley patriot entertained the fancy of taking a pot-shot at me, General Edwin Walker-style. When a Grand Jury indictment came down I vamoosed for Asia.
It struck me living in central Cali that life had become something like East Germany, although a bit softer, more subtle (and with Stetson- and cowboy boot-wearing San Joaquin Valley aggie students razzing our antiwar demos). This was long, long before the pervasive digital technology that we must now deal with, and the massive so-called ‘intel’ establishment whose duty it is to poke their noses and sniff assholes (as my dear Uncle Riley used to put it).
I’m even surprised anyone talks about this any longer. Privacy and respect for the laws purportedly sheltering it have been dead for half a century or more. What we saw with ‘Herbert Philbrick’ in the corny 1950s TV thriller ‘I Led Three Lives’ (as a double-agent commie spy) has come to pass, in spades.

Well Jeremy I am not so sure that the Common American Idiot quickly forgets as much as they are programmed to be outright stupid. I worked for an large international corporation for a number of years, dealing with the IT guys on a regular basis. Every six months a group of them would travel to DC to be briefed by the government on cyber-security issues. They were outright advised that the Russians, Chinese, and many others including the Israelis spent 24/7 attempting to hack into and screw up all of our systems online and that we were doing the same to them as well. It was no big secret and every person who deals in such fields is well aware of the truth of it all. The Common American Idiot however need not be concerned with things like the truth for they cannot handle the truth, can they? Lies and spin, it’s what they have been programmed to prefer.

It is a fact that most nations spy on other nations…friend and foe alike. It is a given that there was Russian meddling, as well as Israeli, German, French, Mexican Canadian (Damn those Canuks!), and others that were able. There are those with job descriptions involving cyber security, well paid and responsible for any breaches.

Requesting time to prepare is not exactly letting the rule of law break down. True she dodges, but this is a congressional supena not exactly the normal wheels of justice turning here. Some congressmen, like

Ditto K-Dog. JHK seems to be missing the larger game in play here, (which is out of character). Of course they will never be able to try the Russo-12. This is a pawn, or even Knight move at best. The indictments have two purposes: 1) to apply more pressure on the Americans that may have been involved; 2) to make it awkward for the Russians in international travel and finance.
The Russians have done the same to Americans through Interpol. And it appears Interpol continues to be a manipulated actor in less than scrupulous government kleptocracy.
Meeting with Putin for the purpose of improved relations is not the issue. It is Whom is meeting with Putin, further exacerbated on the insistence of a one-to-one closed door private meeting. Who the hell does that if they have a lick of sense? Speaks more to desperation than negotiation.
Putin wins because Trump & Co. seem to be going in empty handed, unplanned, and are giving up far too much position. That is why critics are opposing the meeting. The U.S. has a much stronger position, but for some reason is approaching the meeting like they have the weaker position.

Just because they meet does not mean everything, or anything, will be discussed or given up. It can all be for show. Trump is a showman and if he can meet with Putin in a way they both save face then Trump’s political capital goes up. The meeting could be more of an investment than a summit. Putin naturally, and rightly would support shaking the small hand because the rabid neo-liberal elements of the Democratic party still want to carve up Ukraine into a new suburban subdivision. Cultivating the aura of one-to-one makes good sense from Trumps point of view. That it is irresponsible for a national leader to do that won’t occur to him.
Trump will be satisfied if he comes away with something to brag about even if it turns out not to be true. Pretty much like his ballyhooed meeting with Kim.
There is another reason why this bullshit continues on and on without end and that is because it is all billable. Lawyers simply love “legal actions” where there will be no winner and no loser, (except of course the taxpayers) , which can drag on for years and even decades of disclosure, testimony, counter motions and extensions for more of the same because it is steady, easy income. I kid you not for I have signed millions of dollars over to these parasites myself over the course of my tenure in our own, tiny government. It is the real crime and it will only get worse.
The rule of law has already broken down, Keith. Tell me that the banks didn’t break the law in 2006- 2008; and which CEOs went to jail? Did Jamie Dimon et al end up in prison? What about the medical insurance industry which blatantly breaks the law a million or so times a day? Last time I checked, no pharma or insurance CEOs were in jail or under indictment.
The sad fact is, American lawbreakers have gotten away with murder (figuratively and literally) for generations. It’s only been been a relatively few years that the internet has resulted in the existence of alternative media wherein other viewpoints and evidences can be presented to the public, instead of it having to rely on info from the controlled MSM.
Please don’t twist anything I write today to imply that it is all wine and roses. A mountain of corruption rules us and the breaking down of the rule of law is a common theme here. One I agree with. What you say is true but specifically the break down of the rule of law this morning concerns attendance before congressional committees.
This is not a turning of the normal wheels of justice and slippage of such wheel can’t be described as the same kind of breakdown. It is not logical. Breakdown does not fit. It is not the same situation as day to day justice breaking down.
Congressional Committees are not known for justice.

A serious question: Exactly what laws were broken in the Sub-Prime crisis? Banks were REQUIRED to make all those lousy loans to people who had no business taking them. It started with the Community Reinvestment Act under Clinton, and was enforced by her attorney general, Janet Reno. And let’s not forget about the credit bubble created by years of ultra-low interest rates courtesy of Allan Greenspan, and the corrupt agencies Fannie Mae and Freddy Mac, and their champion in Washington, Barney Frank. Yes, banks and Wall St. firms were greedy and stupid, but the smarter ones such as Goldman Sachs sold their toxic loans as soon as they could. Geniuses such as John Paulson saw the writing on the wall and bet billions it would all end in tears. Again, exactly what laws did those Wall St. firms and commercial lenders break?
Fraud was committed in many of these cases and there was even a 60 Minutes episode where they detailed fake mortgage mills where people were paid to sit there all day and sign false names onto non-existent mortgages to be bundled into tranches for sale as CDO’s. The ratings agencies were also colluding by refusing to drop the ratings on non-performing loans.

An excellent and concise synopsis of this ongoing insult to what America used to be Jim, thank you, well done. The bandwidth evidence is an excellent point but will surely be ignored or denied by our resident Trump sucks, Trump sucks, Trump sucks malcontents. While it is cruelly amazing that this bullshit could still be dragging on and probably will never end, it is also equally amazing that not only has the nation not collapsed under President Trump’s reign, but that some things have actually gotten better. I have been reading this blog since about 2006. I still love the prose. Jim’s use of metaphor is almost unrivaled in anything available to be read. However, for a man who has regularly described himself as”famously allergic to conspiracy theories,” Jim has become just one more cantakerous old conspiracy theorist, who are a dime a dozen. Substantively, these blogs are no longer unique or interesting. Nonetheless, I’ll probably keep reading them to enjoy his use of words.
With all due respect to all of those that deny “conspiracy” and “conspiracy theories” I have to tell you that you just don’t get it. Apparently none of the deniers have ever attended a meeting of their local governing bodies or boards of education, where at the end of every meeting they hold an “executive session” from which the public is excused and the discussion during which we, the elected officials cannot discuss or divulge any of the facts of to the public thereafter. If you ever sat through one of these you would see how foolish the denial of conspiracy actually is. And it gets even worse in cases like my Township Committee which has five members. The “Where the Sun Don’t Shine” law does not allow for a quorum of governing body members to meet to discuss or determine policy or actions. However in the case of our Committee, two can meet, determine a plan of action and then separately meet with a third committeeman and set a course. Actions are taken and money is committed to being spent without the knowledge of the full committee and come meeting day, all is already decided and done. That, my friend is conspiracy and that is how it is done. Extrapolate this to the state and Federal levels and it boggles the mind. Conspiracy IS the way, it is the only way things get done. Since the general public does not care and prefers to distract itself with whatever it actually does care about, denial is the only logical defense they can muster to justify their lack of involvement in a system where it is supposed to be OF and BY the people. It is now OF and BY Them at Your expense. A good thing nobody cares or they might get angry.

The result of the Putin and Trump summit is going to be a sea change in bilateral relations between the two countries beginning with a communique that will have swooning, gnashing of teeth and howling emanating from power centers and media for years. (At least that is what I am hoping for.)

The Obama WH and Democratic officials in the FBI and other agencies had such a strong allegiance to the Clintons and the neo-liberal wing of the Democratic Party that they risked everything and conspired together to keep Trump from being elected. Having failed to do that they concocted a conspiracy and collusion theory implicating the Trump campaign with Russian officials claiming that they conspired to defeat Hillary Clinton.
Here’s an alternative scenario that should be considered.
Could it be that they were so concerned about the Trump/Putin connection (which is very real by the way) and the potential damage to national security that this connection might portend for strategic interests of the USA that they set about doing what their charter requires them to do?
I have read about Trump-Putin-Lazar (Chabad) and Abramovich-Leviev and frankly it worries me. We could be in for a rude awakening when it turns out that this is simply a battle between oligarchs for global dominance.
Seems to me the argument could be made that our officials are doing what they are supposed to be doing instead of what might land them in prison for the rest of their lives for treason and espionage against the US. My biggest complaint with Mr. Kunstler’s post this week is the blatant defense of Donald Trump. I have reluctantly followed his antics for thirty years, and he immediately struck me as dishonest, hateful, probably criminal. If it weren’t for the similar traits in his father and grandfather, Trump would be retired from some burger-flipping job in the Bronx. He has no qualifications for anything that doesn’t require lying and cheating. Yes, I know other government officials, businesspeople, etc, display these features, as well, but Trump is the king. He has no place in public office.
I don’t know if Trump is over his head or Putin has something on him, but after that performance yesterday the alternative “story” is becoming more plausible.

China Sea with no method to verify North Korean compliance with their promise to dismantle their nuclear program.

I am not a legal beagle and I have no particular knowledge of your Podesta affair other than what I have briefly read. I rarely – almost never – comment on this site regarding your political players, as they are not as familiar to me as they are to you. I know the ones that everyone knows, but not well enough to presume to comment on them.
The exceptions are Trump, whom I hold in contempt but whose validity as president I have repeatedly said I support – and Clinton, whom you should also have picked up, I equally hold in contempt.
I wouldn’t know Mr Podesta if he fell in my soup. If he and people connected to him are indeed guilty of the crimes you describe I will be delighted to seem him jailed and will personally be happy to throw away the key.
Please do not presume to tell me who I protect – I do not protect him, whatever his political flavour. I do not ‘protect’ anyone, other than the usual people in my personal life whom it is my role to protect.
And there is a difference between ‘hypothetically abused children’ and ‘hypothetically-abused children’. Over here it’s called ‘innocent until proved guilty’. If the hypothesis is shown to be correct, then it becomes appropriate to refer to the children as ‘abused’.

For the benefit of people new to this blog, it is important to understand JHH’s conspiracy theory.
Let me provide a summary in a nutshell:
Hillary Clinton is a criminal because she continued use the same private email server which she had been using for years while serving as Secretary of State.
Jared Kushner was makng arrangements for the Trump administration to use a secret Russian server for communications. Nothing wrong about that.
Wikileaks and Russia performed a valuable public service by releasing private emails from the leadership of the Democratic Party revealing that they preferred the nomination of long time Democrat Hillary Clinton over the long time socialist Bernie Sanders. This was because there was some skepticism regarding whether the Republican campaign would ignore the socialist background of Bernie, not to mention that there is a long historic resistance of the american voting public to socialists. Furthermore, the email revealed that some of the campaign workers often patronized a pizza restaurant which had a ping pong table used by some children, which was proof of pedophilia. This accusation of pedophilia was supported by JHK in one of his blog comments.
James Comey, the Republican FBI director appointed by George W Bush, allegedly found some evidence of Russia meddling in the presidential campaign of 2016 against Hillary Clinton. His deputy was Andrew McCabe, a life-long Republican whose wife was a low level Virginia state Democratic politician.
This investigation was supported from some research conducted by a British intelligence agent, Christopher Steele, who was familiar to the FBI because he was a primary source of the FIFA scandal prosecution. However, because Christopher Steele is dishonest, we can now assert that the FIFA investigation was corrupt and that there was no wrong doing in FIFA.
Both Comey and McCabe, despite being Republicans, secretly concocted fake evidence against Trump because they wanted the Democrat to win.
After Trump fired Comey and AG Jeff Sessions recused himself, Deputy AG Rod Rosenstein appointed Robert Mueller to head a new special investigation of the Russian cyberwarfare and election meddling. Rod Rosenstein is a Republican orignally appointed by George W Bush.
Despite the Republican leadership of the investigation and the majority of the investigators being Republicans, the entire investigation is shown to be a corrupt, faked operation because one of the investigators was shown to have expressed some personal negative opinions of Trump, an opinion shared by a majority of Americans and also a majority of Republicans in Congress.
I forgot to add that Robert Mueller is also a Republican appointed by George W Bush. Maybe George W Bush was the initiator of this deep state conspiracy, probably with the help of his father George H W Bush.

Your reductio ad absurdum seems to rest on the fact that many of these conspirators were Republican, or appointed by Republicans. But RINOs are very much part of the swamp, and comprise a significant plurality of Never Trumpers. Donald Trump didn’t merely defeat Hillary; he also defeated every other Republican running for POTUS. Republicans overwhelmingly chose Trump over all the other RINOs. And it infuriates the establishment that this outsider took the prize. He’s not a lawyer. He’s not a veteran. He had no prior political experience. He’s not even a life-long Republican. Yet he took the party away from the RINOs and now controls every aspect of it.
So your point really misses the mark.
Hillary Clinton is a criminal because she did not take the due care with government documents that was her obligation deriving from the documents she signed in order to obtain Top Secret clearance.
The problem with the Democrat Party officials was not that they “preferred” Hillary Clinton, but that they made overt (and clearly fraudulent) attempts to swing the nomination to her. If you do not recall, I will remind you that Donna Brazile has publicly stated that she provided Ms. Clinton with the questions to be proffered in a “debate” beforehand.
The fact that various officials were appointed by Republicans is of little import when so many of the established members of the Republican Party were “never Trumpers”, as opposed to his nomination as the Democrat establishment was to Bernie Sanders.

Thanks for the summary. I find it impossible to get a handle on any of these matters (or on anything at all really) just from relying on media reports.
I don’t believe conspiracies explain everything about what is going on but I do accept that they happen all the time. Similarly, I don’t think ‘following the money’ explains everything either although it is always in the mix. Peter Hitchens believes in conspiracy theories, not about the WTC and suchlike, but in the normal course of events. He calls it ‘lunch’ because it is at lunches in expensive London restaurants that senior British politicians provide titbits of gossip in return for the placing of news stories and the manipulation of the newspapers’ readers.
I know very little about what is happening in this case apart from what I can pick up here but this is what I think might be happening. The media, politicians and ‘right-thinking’ people are appalled by Trump. They call him a racist, mentally unstable and various other things but can never back it up with evidence. He is an obvious target for their righteousness and the obviousness is so obvious that it does not merit a closer examination. I am prepared to believe that they got carried away on a wave of self-righteous hysteria and some of them conspired somehow to break the law.
It was blazingly obvious that he should be stopped or removed and their conspiracy was ill-thought out and very amateurish, but caught in the moment nobody thought or cared about that because they were all acting as right-thinking people ought to act.
I often write here about the astonishing and fully evidence-free abuse scandals which regularly convulse the world, and sometimes about other mass delusions where hysteria replaces reason. If the authorities know you are planning on hurting yourself, they will take you into custody. As it should be. I am sympathetic to people not wanting to prolong a terminal illness, either because of the pain or the expense. But that’s quite a different thing if looked at aright. Oregon allows it I believe. But there are the damnable cases in between – people who might want to end it for less than terminal cases. A very steep slippery slope.

The law in my country is possibly not the same as yours.
A person may be ‘sectioned’ here (detained under the relevant section of the mental health act) if they seem likely to harm themselves or others, generally if they seem in a state of crisis or distress.
They cannot be prosecuted for an attempted suicide. Suicide may be an entirely calm and rational act – and has been for many people. What is still illegal here is assistedsuicide, so a person helping you out of your physical or mental pain could be prosecuted (but may not be, according to the circumstances).
If the act of suicide were illegal you could be prosecuted if you tried and failed, as used to be the case many years ago.
And if a manipulative person with a personality disorder, for instance, keeps threatening repeatedly to top themselves, as an attention-seeking device, they’re just as likely to be told by a psychiatric professional that it’s their right to do so if they so wish. Which it is. But in most cases they won’t.
You can be done for disturbance of the peace if you attempt suicide in public, though. One such repeat threatener stood on the North Bridge beside Princes St here threatening to jump onto the railway below. Traffic had to be kept off the Bridge for ages while police and health professionals tried to talk him down. He’d done it repeatedly before. Eventually he did actually jump (or fall) but didn’t kill himself.
Far from being prosecuted, he ended up in a wheelchair with a broken spine, being cared for at great expense by the taxpayer. At home.
People have rights. You can’t even force a person to take medicine that would keep them alive unless you can prove they’re not of sound mind, because, legally, that would be assault.

She was sitting with Iranian girls who would deign to include her by speaking English. She got up to find another table or at least sit by herself. I’m not planning on putting myself in the tender care-givers hands’, I can tell you that. I’m sure the proscriptions against suicide in scripture are intended for the young & fit.
Despite having seen TV exposés of extremely poor treatment in some infamous nursing homes (often/generally closed down once they’re looked into) I have personal experience of having relatives in them who were treated with enormous care and respect. I also have a friend whose mother has been in a council-run home here for 6 years and the care is absolutely faultless.
There are many carers in homes who even run errands for their charges in their own personal time because they actually *care* about them. I knew one personally.
It’s not the standard of care that worries me. It’s the fact that I don’t want to be around once I can’t look after myself in the most basic ways. And I don’t want the value of my home to disappear in a couple of years for no good reason as I’d like my family to get some benefit from it.
You’d be lucky to wind up at a place like that. I’ve known of quite a few elderly relatives of friends who were warehoused in long-term/elder care facilities staffed by less than professional Millennials and abusive flowers of diversity. If the system lasts long enough, that will be my fate too. Unfortunately, once I passed out dead drunk when it was 50 below (Northern Minnesota) and woke up a few hours later anyway. That set a bad precedent.

I call Putin a thug because his actions are overt and brutal, taking what he wants when he thinks he can get a way with it, with very little pretense that it is anything else (reference Checnya, Crimea). I will admit that at least in Georgia and the Donbass he did try to put something of a fig leaf on his actions. I understand his claim on the Crimea and I understand that he had no reason to believe he could achieve his aims in any other way – it was still an overt power grab on a par with the US war on Mexico. Many of his neighbors, on the Baltic, e.g. have little doubt that he would move on them if he though he could get away with it, nor do I.
While the west has done plenty of the same there is usually more in the way of attempts at justification or delusions that it is being done for “the greater good” and/or some attempt at negotiations. I have no illusions about the actions of the west, or any human group, and no great admiration for any of our recent leaders, but they are restrained somewhat by “the opinions of mankind”.
I accept that Putin is a realist, acting as he does in what he sees as Russia’s interest. The only pretense of a “greater good” is that he thinks his way will lead to greater stability (he may even be right).

Putin, as a Russian leader, ostensibly working in behalf of the Russian people, can field many points, all reasonable justification for his actions in Crimea and Ukraine. The actions are reasonable to his perspective.

I have never been all that upset about Russia’s alleged interference in the 2016 US presidential election. After all, the US has been interfering in foreign elections for decades and even overthrown governments when it did not like election outcomes (e.g Iran 1953).
Secretary of State Hillary Clinton made a big mistake in 2014 when she encouraged Ukrainians to overthrow their government for one more friendly to the West. Did she think Russia was going to do nothing and watch Ukraine eventually join NATO and turn its Sevastopol naval base into a NATO base? Sevastopol is located on the Crimea peninsula and was the old Soviet Union’s only warm water naval base. Crimea had been a part of the Russian empire since 1783 when it had been annexed from the Ottoman Empire. When Nikita Khrushchev transferred Crimea to Ukraine in 1956, it was for administrative reasons. Many of its residents were ethnic Russians. No one in the Soviet Union ever expected the country to break up. Poor Hillary got bad advice from neo-cons like Victoria Nuland and Ukraine ended up being the big loser.
I am pleased that Trump and Putin are at least talking. How many American parents would want to see their sons going to war over Ukraine? The US should stop trying to impose its democratic ideas abroad and worry about political corruption at home. All too often, our major political offices are for sale to the biggest spenders. Pennsylvania: 48.18% vs 47.46. Difference of 0.72%, That means if 0.37% of voters flipped their votes based on the information released by the Russians, then Russia flipped Pennsylvania. That translates into one out of 270 voters.
Michigan: 47.50% vs 47.27. Difference of 0.23%, translates into one out of 833 voters needed to change their vote based on the info.
Wisconsin: 47.22% vs 46.45%. Difference of 0.77%, translates into one out of 256 voters.
If people don’t believe that there were not that percent of undecided who were swayed by the Russian information, or by Comey’s statements just before the election, then you may as believe in little green men on Mars.

Peak oil through demand destruction. A new study by oil industry consultancy Wood Mackenzie predicts that the demand for oil will start to decline as early as 2036, when autonomous cars become more popular. To the point of this week’s post. The use of the term “ham sandwiches” is to impugn the indictment. The 29-page indictment was very specific. Before an indictment is made it is vetted by multiple agencies. Evidence has to be available to support prosecution. The “ham sandwich” metaphor does not apply to Mueller’s investigation.
Mueller has already gotten multiple guilty pleas and sent people to prison, because there is a legitimate case of Trump-Russia collusion. It is not as Trump says a 400-pound guy who colluded. It was Alpha Bank, NRA, and millions of dollars to the Trump campaign. Follow the money. Look at Trump’s and Manafort’s acts, not their words.

Once I was pulling into my driveway. It was dusk. Suddenly, toward the west in the direction I was facing, a large meteor came racing across the sky. I had never seen anything like it. It was yuuuge, with a tail of black fiery smoke & sparks that stretched behind it for who knows how far. It was such an incredible sight that, as if to validate my experience, I quickly looked around to see if anyone else had seen it. Bill down the street was mowing his lawn. Another neighbor was outside doing something or other & he hadn’t noticed either. I scoured the headlines for several days afterwards. There was a small mention a couple days later on the local news that others had witnessed it, but that was it. Amazing things can happen right under our noses without our being aware.
Another example: I was a young man, working in a retail business. I was stocking shelves, not far from the cash registers. The owner was in front at the registers. Suddenly, there seemed to be a flurry of activity. The owner was rushing across the floor, yelling something. I had been totally oblivious to what had just taken place. Two negroes, high on LSD it was later determined, had come into the store, & robbed the owner at gunpoint (a concealed sawed-off shotgun hidden under an overcoat). While this was going on, I never noticed a thing.
So things can happen right under our noses without our being aware. Two trivial examples but telling.

One interesting theory is that the Watergate burglary was a Deep State frame up of Nixon to take him down for his detente with the Soviet Union. It is interesting. Peter Hitchens mentioned a couple of times fairly recently that he could see the same thing developing in Britain (if I remember correctly). This surprised me a little at the time.
The Left (which seems to include the big majority of media, politicians, academics and probably educated people in general) believe the justice of their cause is self-evident. Therefore they do not understand how anyone can think otherwise and even go as far as to challenge them. So they must be stupid, uneducated, bigoted or simply evil. Once you get to the stage of demonizing your opponents then violence is a real possibility – inflicted by them.
The disastrous liberal interventions in other countries perhaps supports this, for example the rush to punish Assad for the (alleged and very unlikely) use of poison gas ‘against his own people’. It seems to be more acceptable if the killing is done at arm’s length, by drones and hi-tech weapons where you do not actually see your victims. Support for abortion is, I suppose another as is the impressive intolerance of many liberals of their opponents.
The way I look at history it has been a series of attempts by progressives to impose Utopia over heaps of corpses, driven by a ‘rational’ imperative to impose progress, no matter what others might think of it. The Spanish Civil War is one example I know a bit about. This was wholly the fault of the Left despite what the historians say. I was thinking only yesterday that there is a Spain-in-1934 feel about things (the year the Socialist government planned their uprising to seize power for the proletariat).

Secondly, I don’t for a second believe the tally of 130 million adults voting out of a total population of 330 million, because it means an almost 100% voter participation. At best, voter participation in the US is around 50%. In an average family of 2 parents and 2 kids only one will vote. 330 million total population divided by 4 is about 80 million. That means at 130 million total votes counted, the voter rolls were inflated by about 60%.
Given that voter fraud is exclusively an urban and therefore Democratic phenomena, it is exactly as I asserted previously: more than half of Killary’s votes are fugazy — fake phantom votes!

How come this source didn’t tell CIA that Putin ordered Crimea hacking?
Columnist George Will has now stated that he believes there was collusion between the Trump campaign an Russians. He also implies that it is ongoing. This is more than simply interference.
George is the intellectual heir of William F. Buckley though not quite the equivalent. However, he is a staunch paleo-conservative. The kind of conservative I can get along with because what they believe is honest. Their values can be debated without confounding “neo” views of Democrats and Republicans.
