Timing Is (Not) Everything

by James Howard Kunstler

“Federal Reserve officials are closer to winding down their controversial $85 billion-a-month bond-purchase program, possibly as early as December, in the wake of Friday’s encouraging jobs report.”

That from the much-deservedly maligned John Hilsenrath, widely regarded to be the Federal Reserve’s ventrioloquist dummy over at the Wall Street Journal, as in, from God’s mouth to the jittery multitudes. Of course the jobs number was just another highly seasoned and over-leavened cupcake from the Bureau of Labor Statistic’s magic hedonic oven, so you can be sure that the predicate of that statement is… how to put it delicately…  the latest arrant lie with hypothetical icing on top.

Everybody knows that the Federal Reserve’s money-pumping operations have become a replacement for what used to be an economy. Therefore, no more money pumping = no more so-called economy. It’s that simple. But it doesn’t mean that the Federal Reserve won’t make a gesture and I wouldn’t be surprised if they try it during the season that Santa Claus hovers over the national consciousness — or what little of that remains when you subtract the methedrine, the Kanye downloads, the fear of an $11,000 bill for an emergency room visit requiring three stitches, and all the other epic distractions of our time.

The next meeting of the Fed’s Open Market Committee (FOMC), where such things as taper-or-not are considered, is Dec. 17. The Fed has to make some kind of gesture to retain any credibility, so I suspect they’ll go for a symbolic shaving of five or ten billion a month off the current official bond-buying operation number of $85 billion a month (or $1.2 trillion a year). If they don’t do it, no one will ever believe them again. I call it the “head-fake” taper, because it is essentially a false move.

The catch is that the Fed has more than one back door for vacuuming up all sorts of other miscellaneous financial trash paper securitized by promises already broken, moldy sheet-rock housing, college loans defaulted on, car payments that stopped arriving eighteen months ago, credit cards maxed to oblivion, sovereign foreign economies visibly whirling down the drain, and untold casino bet derivative hedges. Loose talk has it that the Fed is buying up way more dodgy debt than the official number of $85 billion a month. And why not? They bailed out way more than the $700 billion official TARP figure back in 2009 — everything from insolvent European banks to Floridian motels on the REO junk-pile — so nobody should take any particular taper number seriously. They’ll just backfill as necessary.

But even in a world of seemingly no consequence, things happen. One pretty sure thing is rising interest rates, especially when, at the same time as a head-fake taper, foreigners send a torrent of US Treasury paper back to the redemption window. This paper is what other nations, especially in Asia, have been trading to hose up hard assets, including gold and real estate, around the world, and the traders of last resort — the chumps who took US T bonds for boatloads of copper ore or cocoa pods — now have nowhere else to go. China alone announced very loudly last month that US Treasury debt paper was giving them a migraine and they were done buying anymore of it. Japan is in a financial psychotic delirium scarfing up its own debt paper to infinity. Who’s left out there?  Burkina Faso and the Kyrgystan Cobblers’ Union Pension Fund? The interest rate on the US 10-year bond is close to bumping up on the ominous 3.0 percent level again. Apart from the effect on car and house loans, readers have pointed out to dim-little-me that the real action will be around the interest rate swaps. Last time this happened, in late summer, the too-big-to-fail banks wobbled from their losses on these bets, providing a glimpse into the aperture of a black hole compressive deflation where cascading chains of unmet promises blow financial systems past the event horizon of universal default and paralysis where money stops moving anywhere and people must seriously reevaluate what money actually is.

I think we’ll see them try the head-fake taper. They must. It will be backstopped by and saturated in statistical lying, and everyone will have trouble parsing the probable effect because the chronic dishonesty loose in this land will have deformed and impaired all metrics of true value. At the heart of whatever remains of this economy is fire, and the officers of the Federal Reserve are playing with it. Pretty soon, we’ll get the un-taper, the final surrender to the crack-up boom that awaits before the western world has to go medieval.

Why Barack Obama’s Legacy is Everybody’s Business

We don’t know where the next historic tipping point will be. In 1929 it was the New York stock market crash that triggered the decade-long Great Depression that ended with World War II. The 2008 Great Recession began on Wall Street and a wave of economic hardship spread around the world.

Today as in previous times, our common consciousness entertains only a vague notion about the fact that what is irrational and unsustainable will come to an end. Read more http://www.holigent.org/Holigent.org/Legacy.html

“But even in a world of seemingly no consequence, things happen.”

One of those things was that the federal judge in charge of the case ruled that Detroit was eligible for bankruptcy, even though it hadn’t bargained in good faith with all of its creditors. Yes, Detroit hasn’t just declared bankruptcy, but is officially bankrupt. Time for a response to the rest of the U.S. from John Kerfoot telling them that they’re next.

AP reported he capped their pensions at 20K. That’s fair considering the average yearly income for employed U.S. Citizens is 40K. They should have paid off their cars and homes by now.

“Friday’s encouraging jobs report.” Yes set the bowls of chicken blood under the saint of wishful thinkings action figure and burn the incense. The jobs are 1.3 million shy of the previous 2008 January peak and we have more than 14 million working age adults than we did then. The uncounted long term unemployed are too numerous to count and labor force participation remains at decades long lows. As one of them who is looking I feel the slight thaw (I’m actually getting Interviews) and the pain (close only counts in hand-grenades and horseshoes). With one in three looking able to find in any reasonable time its a long cold winter. I’m expecting cheerleading to let in more of the best and the brightest from foreign lands by our democracy of corporate executives any day now. A small statistical uptick in the clusterfuck of lost jobs today will be tomorrows job glut with cries to up our population and lower the size of fast food French fries cardboard pockets. Not that that would not be a good idea for many. For those unable to flip burgers it wont be good at all. we are still begging for burgers.

Wish me luck, another interview tomorrow.

Some job hunting humor for you: This guy is on a job interview and the HR manager is asking him the usual things: why he wants to work there, discussing his work experience and strengths, etc.
At one point in the interview the HR manager asks him what he would consider one of his major weaknesses. The guy replies,
“A weakness? I would say my honesty…my candor…I’m very, very honest”. HR manager is taken aback and says, “Interesting. You consider your honesty a weakness, but I have to say that as an HR manager, I think honesty is a strength!”
Guy pauses and says, “I don’t give a shit what you think!”

      Good luck tomorrow!!!!

      • K-Dog December 10, 2013 at 12:21 am #

Ah, yeah! Trouble is I’m that guy. That very joke actually came up in an interview I had a couple of weeks ago. One of my irons that’s still in the fire. Afterwords I recalled that I had seen it in a Dilbert cartoon a few weeks earlier.

I appreciate the reminder. While honest I have one thing going for me. I am able to play my cards close to my chest and keep some things to myself. Sometimes I know things but keep them on the downlow. Problem there is that I see is doing that has not always served me well either and I’m changing. But putting it all together I’m thinking the best way is to be honest but do it with great diplomacy.

And never say you are hiding Jews in your basement.

In a similar boat… 8 months since layoff from a well paying job, getting the odd interview but no offers. A solid Resume with only 2 employers over the last 13 years helps somewhat, but I’m up against younger competitors with ivy league MBAs. One thing I did learn in a career workshop is to navigate the conversation away from “weaknesses” … that question is a red flag and a sign you have failed on some element of the interview. If put on the spot, I won’t joke and will reply that I am human and have made mistakes but do not perceive inherent weaknesses related to the job requirements.
          Good luck!

K-D; I’ve had 12 different jobs from 2000 to 2009 each lasting anywheres from three months to 3 years with 1 month to 2 years between. A slow spiral down economically and extremely stressful on family life. My step-father then offerred to pay my tuition so I could go back to school (I was 49 at the time and now 52; and a great many thanks to him) and now that I have a masters I’m working 23-32 hours a week and will gross around $7,000.00 this year. We’re afloat because of my wifes 18,000.00 a year teaching position and two children which help us apply for Government assistance. It’s a Slow Emergency and economic fall… that being said don’t lose heart and keep pushing and looking for opportunities, even though most of them seem like your pissin’ in the wind.

The next tipping point? While we’ve all been keenly watching the antics on Wall Street in expectation of witnessing some disastrous fuck up, weird weather patterns are bedeviling the northern latitudes. Perhaps what the climate’s serving up might deserve a little more scrutiny?

There have been signs that this winter’s going to be intense, perhaps just a tad too intense for our fragile and increasingly complex support systems to handle; at least after several repeated blows. My sense has been that the proximate event that will trigger the cascading chaos that will culminate in the Great Wrath will be a climatic natural disaster. Might an especially severe winter storm be the proximate event?

      Indubitably! (As they say.)
But that would be peering into the abyss that is the comfortable home of something that is quite disinterested in the fate of Homo not-so-sapiens, and would peer back with a eons-old, incurious gaze that says, “You ain’t shit.” That’s just not done in this country, as it upsets cherished delusions and religious certainties which could cause an overload in the cognitive dissonance circuit.

  7. swmnguy December 9, 2013 at 10:47 am #

It’s interesting how people’s perception pervade everything they do. I know people who seem to have everything going for them, yet don’t do any of the things they clearly could do to improve their situation. It’s because for some reason they don’t perceive that they have as many resources and options as they really do, and telling them so doesn’t help. It’s insanely frustrating to watch.

I’ve had the good fortune to travel over the past few years. I love looking out of airplane windows at the landscape below, particularly the human landscape. Flying over China is different from flying over Europe, and both are very different from flying over the good ol’ USA.

It’s obvious from 35,000 feet that America was founded by people who thought the world was infinite. Outside our urban centers, housing and roads “sprawl” for mile after mile. Along the Eastern seaboard, it’s impossible to tell where one “community” ends and the next one begins. The gigantic realms of subdivisions turn the whole landscape into not-quite-towns, where everyone has to drive a car to do the slightest errand, not to mention to go to work or to secure the means of basic sustenance.

Over China, outside the major cities, one sees little villages surrounded by the fields where the inhabitants work. 3 miles over is another little cluster of houses amid the fields. Those people don’t live lives I want to lead, but they live where they work and they really don’t need to go anyplace else. They wouldn’t have a need for a car.

Europe isn’t quite the same, nor is Japan, from 35,000 feet. But they have set up their living arrangements in vastly more efficient ways than we Americans have.

So, with humanity’s intractable foolishness, we have adopted the social and economic model developed to the highest degree in the USA. We use corporate finance capitalism, which depends at its core on infinite and expanding markets, resources, energy and money in order to function. At the root of the system is lending at interest, and the use of debt as money, and the use of money as a medium of exchange and a store of value, and also as a commodity in and of itself. Such a system has to expand infinitely or it will begin to consume itself, and collapse.

Unfortunately, of these indispensable infinites, only money can be made infinite, and that only by making it abstract. The other factors remain finite. Once everyone who has the money to buy a refrigerator and a power source to plug it into has one, they’re out of the refrigerator market. Now we have to make inferior refrigerators so they burn out and consumers have to replace them. That sets off a self-consuming spiral too. The buyer has to find more money, the manufacturers have to use more resources, and everyone needs more energy. Making energy artificially cheap allows global labor arbitrage, to keep the cost of all these un-needed refrigerators within a range that people can actually accumulate enough money to pay.

Anybody can see that this will fail. We’re currently at the stage of fiddling with every possible abstract element in the equation, to make it appear that the overall system still works. It doesn’t, though, and this will become increasingly and unavoidably obvious to all. Those most attached tothe current system are those who have profited the most, and they will resist any modification no matter how obvious and necessary. The worst of all will be those who have never fully received the benefits they thought they had earned, and will destroy all efforts to bring in a more sensible and sustainable existence in their vain desperation to get what they feel they have paid for already.

Once fraud becomes the only viable industrial enterprise, the end comes up quickly.

      swmnguy,
Excellent, obvious examples and observations in your post.
      Thanks.

    • K-Dog December 9, 2013 at 12:37 pm #

Good observations and the poor man’s way to do it is to use Google Earth. I remember looking at the border between the Dominican Republic and Haiti a while back. It was a ‘world of difference’ but one doesn’t have to go so far up to see the contrasts in living arraignments and environmental destructions. Take a look at any American city like Houston which grew without any urban planning at all and compare it to those with the rudiments of a plan and you can see the differences right on the ground.

      • Janos Skorenzy December 9, 2013 at 2:38 pm #

Yes, Haiti is all Black whereas the Dominican Republic has a semi-White mulatto ruling class that has been able to keep things from devolving into a complete disaster.

        • hineshammer December 10, 2013 at 6:16 am #

Christ Vlad, try reading up on some Haitian history before spewing your idiotic, racist vomit into the discussion.

          • Janos Skorenzy December 10, 2013 at 1:51 pm #

Oh you think Haiti isn’t Black? But it is. The eco disaster is on them. Remember, if Blacks can’t do anything wrong, they can’t do anything right. Existential Agency isn’t a one way street.

Just finished today’s WSJ front page to back page; not one word about any of this. Matter of fact, one article states in 2014 performance of Dow will build on and exceed the great returns of 2013. They use the mid 1920s and late 90s as precedent.

As I wait and wait and wait for the page at clusterfuck nation to load I have to wonder if the new NSA abominations have something to do with: A)Increased traffic flow to Jims Blog. Or B) Something more sinister. I won’t be giving that more than a passing thought but the days of Asoka, Janos and crew may be indeed numbered.

It is not a great stretch of imagination from realizing that if the government can spend all day playing on line games to look for people building bombs in their basements they can certainly spend a good part of the day throwing fresh meat in front of dogs here to see what they will do. And my story of having the personal heat in my life turned up, my own private global warming, becomes a bit more credible. Going from monitoring on line gaming to monitoring politically oriented blogs is a no brainier. Perhaps new revelations will cancel out “Friday’s encouraging jobs report.” as certain ex-government employees join the end of the line and elbow their way to the front. If that happens I for one won’t be giving them any sympathy and you’d think I would as I’m looking for work myself. But I can’t find it in me to sympathies with them. Those who blunder onto government secrets can have unusually bad luck and I think they won’t be having the same bad luck as they look for work. Of course they might just be sent to the ‘eastern front’ Sgt. Schultz’s greatest fear in Hogans Heros. For him it was the Russian front. The modern equivalent I suppose is Kandahar Province.

The Guardians version of the story.

    • K-Dog December 9, 2013 at 12:26 pm #

It should be: sympathize and it should be with an apostrophe The Guardian’s version of the story.

And as long as it is taking to get a page load and point out a simple typo or two one could think there is a denial of service attack going on here! Be that as it may be messing with on line gaming explains why the first thing that happened to me as a result of my sleuthing was interfering with my watching of Netflix over a WII controller. They took over my controller too let me know they could make my life difficult, which they did.

My guess (at this very present moment)?
Traffic. Folks are getting nervous and they’re [finally] becoming interested in WTF is going on. JHK has some very solid theories in that regard.

Remember, ideology is ideology, but money is money. Which one is going to get the focus in a carefully constructed culture of consumerism and worship of all things acquisitive?

      Thanks for the linkages.

Your guess is reasonable and I hope that’s what it is. A year ago Jim’s hit rate on a Monday ran between 12,000 and 20,000 viewers. But why all of a sudden? Anyhoo Jim will know when he reviews his traffic report. If all the hits come from a certain Caribbean Island in the middle of the Gulf of Mexico it won’t be folks suddenly becoming interested in WTF is going on. Jim will know if he is aware of what to look for.

It also could be his webmaster has been tweaking the system and made a tweak in the wrong direction. Anyway things are getting back to normal now.

The trouble with my exceptionally curious nature is I consider all possibilities and since I’ve actually peeked behind the curtain and traced I.P. addresses of visitors here and suffered as a result then well; I consider all possibilities. Entirely reasonable from my perspective.

But paranoia sure can annoynoia and If I ever meet Snowden coffee is on me!

We should not forget the role of Peak Oil in the current “recovery”.
Due to temporary gains from US shale oil production and reductions in EU oil consumption the price of gasoline in the US has dropped to
almost $3 per gallon. This puts more money into the 97% of Auto Addicted Americans for the moment to either help pay their bills or more likely shop some more. Thus the uptake in US GDP and some life back in the US economy. But as predicted by Peak Oil theorists already we see the impacts of even this small growth on oil prices very quickly. The price of WTI oil had dropped as low as $92 per barrel but is about $98 per barrel and heading back above $100 per barrel. Until the US stops its profligate waste of oil for endless Wars ironically to protect oil supply which have cost $8 Trillion since 1976
( see http://www.commondreams.org/view/2013/12/08-2 ) and of course Auto Addiction then as soon as there is any life in the economy it will bump against the ceiling of Peak Oil availability.
What is encouraging to me is that finally more and more progressives like Juan Cole who have tended to downplay Peak Oil and the role of Auto Addiction in Oil Addiction, are waking up.
This quote could have come straight from TheOilDrum.com or James Kunstler:
“We need a crash program to get the world off petroleum, some 70% of which is used to power automobiles. People should be given incentives to move back to cities so they don’t have to commute. Better public transport is needed…”
The Zeitgeist is changing fundamentally and this is another sign of it…

I hope the Zeitgeist is changing fundamentally but media is run by corporate interest who are currently trying build up the temporary oil glut into permission to ship crude oil overseas to boost profits. From the linked article:

“Shipping oil overseas to compete with pricier Brent isn’t an option because U.S. law dating to earlier periods of oil shortage prohibits most crude exports. That ban is coming under fire from some producers.

Our government is run by a democracy of corporate executives who call all the shots. They don’t care about Peak Oil or the future. They care about profits. Expect the ‘glut’, a result of simple transportation infrastructure not matching new production realities to be built up to bolster the phony case of ‘American Energy Independence’. Expect our perspicacious president to apprehend his role in all this and smile a lot and mouth a platitude or two about how alive and well the American dream is.

You know about Peak Oil. I know about Peak Oil. Most of the readers here know about Peak Oil. But we are a minority who are easily ignored. Joe Six Pack makes the Zeitgeist, we don’t.

Thanks for the Common Dreams link. I wish the dream was more common. Hell I wish it was on the American Zeitgeist radar.

    • BackRowHeckler December 10, 2013 at 7:20 am #

But, as JHK points out, there is no “getting the world off petroleum”. Petroleum is unique and irreplaceable.

Therein lies the rub, as the Bard Himself states.

BBC is wall to wall Mandela today. Will they be covering his ascension into heaven that will occur a few days after he’s buried?

    Jim,
You are absolutely correct that timing isn’t “everything”. (Although I’m certain that the fraudulent, head-fake of tapering will be carefully timed to be ‘implemented’ over the dozing season of deep winter excesses of cabin-fever parties and Xmas through New Years concentration on how many gew-gaws it takes to achieve escape-velocity from consequences, rapidly coming due.)

What IS a large chunk of ‘determining the direction of the future’ is perspective leading to perception.

This is why the fraudsters, their hired minions and willful followers are really shoveling on the coal powering their engines of perception.
Without the lumpenprole (or ‘perceived majority’) meekly accepting lies fashioned of whole cloth, the whole swindle (and its’ attendant mouthpieces) comes to an abrupt and very messy end.

There’s no longer any need to wonder why we’re being aggressively and persistently lied to, everywhere and on every level.

“Friday’s encouraging jobs report.” – JHK
    ===========

Joe, next door, is my employment/unemployment barometer…who needs the BLS?

Joe is 50 years old and in his 4th year without a job. I wonder what he thinks when he hears the talking heads on CNBC speaking of 203,000 jobs added in November and the unemployment rate dropping to 7% even. Well, actually, Joe probably isn’t the CNBC type…more likely he’s a Judge Judy type.

With all the spare time on his hands you’d think he’d do something around the house. God knows I wouldn’t know where to begin. I would love to post photos for you to see before it all suddenly collapses like WTC 7.

You’d swear it was Detroit. Every several months Joe will appear outside and do some task for 20 or 30 minutes and then disappear for several more months. Whatever tool was involved in the task will be left in the place and the attitude where he perceived the job finished. And there the tool will sit, often for years.

One day in mid-summer I noticed a huge aluminum extension ladder leaned from the backyard to above the second story roofline. Hmm? A roof leak perhaps? Days went by, and then weeks. Still the ladder leaned against the house. Weeks became months. On Thanksgiving Day with family over I sarcastically broadcast a gentleman’s bet that the ladder would remain in its current position until the fall of 2016 when news of an impending hurricane would spur Joe to action.

As if by magic, two days later, the ladder was gone. I wonder if Joe has one of those dish devices where you can listen in on people’s conversations at a considerable distance.

Of the four or six possible major events that could hasten the collapse of industrial human society, a default by the U.S. government on a significant portion of its financial obligations and commitments initiated, in this case, by the Fed withdrawing its financial support is the event most worthy of attention. It would be the easiest, not the quickest, among the messiest, and as devastating as any. So, the Federal Reserve has my full attention. I wish that I had an escape pod idling on the ramp.

“Joe, next door, is my employment/unemployment barometer…who needs the BLS?” — Q. Shtik

I trust BLS before I trust an anecdotal “barometer.”

BLS is objective, reporting both ups and downs.

Your neighbor may not be objective at all.

    • K-Dog December 10, 2013 at 1:11 am #

Joe is 50 years old and in his 4th year without a job. Being unemployed for any significant length of time looks bad to employers. As bad as being 50+. Joe is a barometer who has lost all his mercury. From an employers point of view anyone who has been unemployed for a significant stretch of time has something wrong with them. It’s not right but that’s the way it is.

Only 1 in 10 long-term unemployed find work.

This is the graph that matters:

      BLS Employment-Population Ratio

As the graph shows “Friday’s encouraging jobs report.” does not mean a thing and there has been no improvement in the job market since 2007 and no cooking of the books will change that.

I wonder if Joe would fix his house more if he had a job. House repairs are daunting when one’s ass is broke and can bring on a depressive funk in twenty minutes or less. House repair always cost money even when you do all the work yourself. With no job even small expenses can seem huge. But not knowing Joe I don’t know.

BBC is wall to wall Mandela today. Will they be covering his ascension into heaven that will occur a few days after he’s buried?

I’m surprised Mandela and South Africa were not mentioned in this week’s CFN post. One can hardly argue it’s not relevant. South Africa is yet another sign of things to come. SA is a failing state with a dwindling to non-existent middle class and a ridiculously widening disparity between rich and poor. Crime is rampant and the elimination of Whites seems to be the agenda. Is this the future for the U.S.? It could be. The one saving grace is that Whites are still a majority in the U.S., but not for long. If the U.S. adopts the behavioral philosophy of the current SA leadership and the ANC, not the rhetoric, then it can create a safe haven and refuge within its borders for Whites being persecuted around the world. Not coincidentally, SA encourages Gay Tourism. If you’re gay, you’re encouraged to come to SA and party. Just make sure you’re agile enough to dodge the discriminate poachers. Here’s yet another article they should read at Mandela’s beatification.

    http://whitewraithe.wordpress.com/2010/01/22/violent-black-on-white-crime-now-the-largest-industry-in-south-africa/

    • Lord Blaby of Lawson December 10, 2013 at 9:13 am #

This from that linked article. I, once upon a time, would have thought this notion nonsensical. Now, it seems to be the only thing that makes sense of the madness.

Two years ago Louw Rabie, a brilliant albeit reclusive geologist and brother of author Jan Rabie, was beaten to death with a fence pole by two Coloured men to whom he had lent some money a week earlier. Police in the small Cape town of Montagu readily caught his murderers because they happened to have drinking money during the week, taken from his home. He was 80 years old, but in good health. He is reputed to have been one of the most brilliant geologists and intellectuals this country has ever produced, writing copiously throughout his life but disdaining publication and public esteem. Africans with their oral tradition are fond of saying that “when an old person dies, a library burns down”. What strikes me about the relentless killings of educated whites, is that the criminals are indeed “burning down the libraries” of this country and physically exterminating the intellectual class, much like Pol Pot did in Cambodia. The media are celebrating youth, dance, colour, being black and exuberant – as opposed to the quiet studiousness of middle-aged and elderly whites, the bearers of knowledge and understanding. Are these learned whites who are being killed in exuberant, paradisiacal outbreaks of violence simply the remnants of a civilisation that is being eradicated in the name of decolonisation? No government spokesman has ever condemned such killings; so we may assume that the present regime is completely indifferent to them, where such killings do not enjoy their tacit support.

The wealthy elite have no tribe but the tribe of wealth. Race is a secondary consideration as it relates to their own vested interests, but it is used as a tool to control. A wealthy White person has no allegiance to another White person who isn’t of their class/tribe, and so will sell other White people down the river when the time is right. The time is right and a river is running through it.

About 20 white people murdered a day in SA, including entire farm families wiped out all at once in the middle of the night. What’s more, they have been effectively disarmed by anti gun laws passed within the past 10 years. Sound familiar? Its pretty clear, now that Mandela is gone, Boers and other European peoples in SA will be going the way of their cousins in Rhodesia. Why would any of them stay.

There is no support for Bio-determinism in any biological or psychological science. Bio-determinism is a straw man argument. He’s in pretty good shape for an old codger, and he’s leading the good life in SA. For now. Perhaps when the likes of Gary Player get murdered, then we’ll hear about the decline of SA, but not until then. For now, the wealthy elite, White or otherwise, have struck a bargain with the SA leadership and the ANC. Live and Let Live. If that contract is voided by failure to uphold by one or the other party, then we’ll see action and the flight of the wealthy. Until then, it’s party on, like the rest of the world, as though it’s 1999.

What would happen if interest rates were to jump to levels at which they start to make logical sense? Maybe we’d be back on the road to economic sustainability. Maybe artificially suppressed interest rates aren’t the solution, maybe they’re the problem.

What would happen if statistical agencies started to publish numbers that squared with reality?

For instance, do official inflation numbers make any sense to you? They don’t make any sense to me. Like clockwork they publish numbers year after year that look impossibly consistent. At least to my eyes.

Look at the turmoil in the economy in the past 20 years. Look at the offshoring and the importation of huge quantities of goods from slave wage regimes. There should have been a huge drop in the cost of living. Did you see it? I sure didn’t.

Plus, the cost of college education is through the roof as is the cost of medical care. So is the cost of oil.

We’re supposed to believe that the net effect of all this mayhem is an inflation rate of around 1 to 3 percent year after year. How is this remotely possible?

The Fed is an organization that utterly failed to to foresee or to put out financial conflagrations in the 2000’s before they reached firestorm proportions.

But we’re to believe that the Fed has such in-depth knowledge of the economy and such an exquisitely sure touch on the money supply that it can fine tune inflation. How likely is this?

Maybe official inflation numbers are a load of crap.

The Fed has the stink of an extraordinarily reckless institution with no real idea of what it’s doing, making it all up as it goes along, an organization ostensibly created for the purpose of financial stability, given its legality and power by the imprimatur of law-making bodies but in actuality an aider and abettor to the robbery of livelihoods and income and wealth.

Given the massive power of the forces arrayed against it, coming mostly from the inside from its C-suite and Wall Street elites, there’s only direction for the US to go and that’s down, down, down. There couldn’t be a more clearly marked path if it had been cut from granite.

The US will be destroyed from within. The gangsters in the Kremlin and Beijing and Riyadh, with their own agendas and ambitions, but without sufficient power to supplant America, must be rubbing their eyes in disbelief.

Here’s another excellent article and some of the comments are also excellent, and some of the comments are pure lunacy.

In answer to the question why more Whites haven’t left South Africa, some cannot afford to, and for those who can manage to scrounge enough together to get themselves and their families out, the process of legally immigrating to another country is a difficult one unless they’re willing to risk crossing the Rio Grande with a group of Mexicans in the dead of night illegally.

From the article, here’s Mandela in his best Moses impression.

As a Communist, Mandela had always envisioned a one-party state.

“Under a Communist Party Government South Africa will become a land of milk and honey. Political, economic and social rights will cease to be enjoyed by Whites only. They will be shared equally by Whites and Non-Whites. There will be enough land and houses for all. There will be no unemployment, starvation and disease,” Mandela wrote.

From the Red Sea to Red Milk & Honey. Lovely. Prescient, Mandela wasn’t. Was he overly-optimistic or cunningly deceptive? You make the call, but only after evaluating ALL the evidence and removing as much personal bias as possible.

People usually don’t run from metaphorical MIlk & Honey, but they do in SA.

Today South Africa has a 26 percent unemployment rate and a 17 percent HIV rate. There is no equality. Instead, like all wealth redistribution schemes, inequality has been spread along with resentment and a pervasive feeling of injustice for everyone.

South Africans distrust the judiciary and the police. And they distrust the leaders that they elect. Even without the massive brutal Zimbabwean redistribution schemes that Mandela was smart enough not to endorse, but that many black South Africans continue to demand, much of the white population is thinking about leaving. Nearly a million have already left. And they’re not alone.

The middle class blacks that the hopes of post-Apartheid South Africa depend on are nearly as eager to leave as their white counterparts. And taking their place are illegal immigrants from nearby Zimbabwe.

Among the 18-34 age group, 56 percent of whites, 53 percent of Indians and 43 percent of those of mixed race want to leave the country. Among blacks the number is only at 33 percent which still means that a third would like to leave.

The South Africa that Mandela leaves behind is a land in search of a people. There is no milk and honey. Instead there is a desperate scramble for a way out of the country by every race and creed able to agree only on wanting to leave. Post-Apartheid South Africa is an experiment that Western liberals love to admire, but that nobody seems to want to actually live in.

“The people of South Africa, led by the S.A.C.P. will destroy capitalist society and build in its place socialism where there will be no exploitation of man by man, and where there will be no rich and poor, no unemployment, starvation, disease and ignorance,” Mandela wrote.

Today 77 percent of South African households face food insecurity and most teachers are not able to teach students how to read independently. The Communist utopia of universal literacy, plenty and equality has not come and isn’t coming.

I wonder if Greenfield will be invited to give a speech at the circus that will be Mandela’s funeral in the land flowing with blood and blasted brain matter?

Here in Australia, the CFN website was open for a few hours following JFK’s most recent post, and then it was conspicuously blocked temporarily for most of yesterday. Now it’s back up again. I don’t know if this means anything?

Here in Australia, the economy seems to be doing well generally. The Australian people seem to trust the government and the system here works.

Perhaps one ominous sign, however, is that the Aussie dollar is outrageously high relative to other currencies. It seems that foreigners (particularly Asians) are dumping US dollars to snap up overpriced Aussie real estate. Everything is Australia is outrageously expensive if priced in US dollars. I’ve been looking a property, but I can’t afford anything unless I want to live out in remote “Woop Woop”.

Australia seems to be a rare oasis of calm.

The writer did not intend that readers take the comment about Joe being a barometer literally. Although, if Joe ever DOES become employed again the writer will be sure the economy is truly on the mend.

It was intended readers would recognize that Q. was using JHK’s mention of the Friday unemployment news to segue to the telling of a pet peeve anecdote. And there wasn’t an iota of falsity or even hyperbole in it. The sight out our kitchen window of the property next door is nothing short of incredible. (To address K-Dogs question……no, even when Joe was employed he did NOTHING to maintain the property. Ditto for his wife and daughter.)

I think the website went down yesterday afternoon/evening because I got a 500 error page asking me to report it to the webmaster…so I did.

Really nice updates to the potager garden!

I still have big reservations about Kunstler’s usage of the term MEDIEVAL:

“The medieval period is frequently caricatured as a “time of ignorance and superstition” that placed “the word of religious authorities over personal experience and rational activity.”” Wikipedia

There’s no way society in general can go back to this way of thinking/lifestyle with the preponderance of learning, people who are learned and knowledge of many things, including global access to was is known. What makes the collapse of anything made by man so profound is the fact it can be witnessed and studied by billions of people all over the world simultaneously. Despite complaints of their abuse; alternating current, radio and the telephone has changed the course of civilisation forever. We can’t and will not live without basic methods of mass communication. That includes the mass printing press.

For all your acquired wisdom, Janos, I am often amazed how naïve you can be about human nature whether in the world of business or politics or just around the neighborhood.

Read this op-ed piece from today’s NY Times or better yet the entire book, The Prince (which, BTW, is among The Franklin Library’s “100 greatest books.”)

I don’t think the times article represents The Prince very well. Machiavelli was incredibly wise and understood the human condition exceptionally well. Above all he was a realist; for example.

“Public affairs are easily managed in a city where the body of the people is not corrupt; and where equality exists, there no principality can be established; nor can a republic be established where there is no equality.”

His incredible pragmatism is often misunderstood as evil but what he was really about was just rule and a peaceful state that endures. He knew well the horrors of war, conflict, and misery and he did not want any of that shit. He really wanted a peaceful and prosperous state.

Man can do better. Nay, he must. Would you throw you own father out of his own home? No, right? But some do after the parent gives the home to a child for tax or medicare purposes. Likewise with this situation. It is not inevitable or somehow beyond or outside of ordinary morality.

Kdog is right. Mac gave cunning because that’s what was expected of him. In his heart, he longed for the lost Republic. Morality should be for the rulers as well as the ruled. If these two are completely different classes, then it’s not going to happen.

“Everybody knows that the Federal Reserve’s money-pumping operations have become a replacement for what used to be an economy. Therefore, no more money pumping = no more so-called economy. It’s that simple.”

And why does the madness continue? Because a runaway train of financial services speeds down tracks of destruction. The hand that could stop them is handcuffed to the pilots seat unable to reach the controls that could prevent catastrophe. Jim blogs every week about bank vaults filled with worthless paper and the coming financial Armageddon. Disaster indeed looms around the corner. And the people in power do not want to stop the train.

I just watched a documentary made way back in 2008 that gives great insight into the financial mess we are in and goes far to explain what is going on in our government and the economy. I give the link to the films home page now.

    Lets Make Money

I watched it on Netflix and think it is good to watch by anybody mystified by the economic policies of our government. In the film I found the words of Hermann Scheer particularly lucid. He was one of the good guys. Not everyone in the film is a good guy.

If you sometimes mumble about ‘The Banksters’ and you get Netflix you should watch it; It’s that simple.

The newly sainted Mandelas (Nelson and Winnie) specialized in “necklacing”…..place a tire around the victim’s neck and fill it with gasoline……poof…….screams…….laughter…..stench. Considered great fun in SA. Look for the charming couple to be anointed with a nobel peace prize…….

    • BackRowHeckler December 11, 2013 at 9:03 am #

Oh Ya, Winnie Mandela … she’s a Sweetheart, isn’t she? Necklacing, what a charming procedure! From what I understand, the candidate, some as young as 14, is bound, and a gasoline soaked tire is placed around the neck, then ignited! Ingenious! This spectacle was reserved for rival tribes, to bring them in line with the ANC way of thinking, so to speak. It was pretty successful. Husband Nelson divorced Winnie to distance himself from the necklacing agenda, but Winnie never went to prison, no, as a matter of fact, she is part of ANC Leadership to this day!

I was listening to Mike Savage last night. This theory of an impending genocide against the White population, now that Mandela is out of the picture, keeps coming up. Is it just paranoia? Is there anything to it? One thing that was mentioned, and if it true it is chilling, is that the President Himself, at political rallies, and with Bono by his side, is fond of leading the crowd in songs with lyrics like, “One Boer, One Bullet’, and “Bring me my machine gun”.

I would say to the Israelis and Chinese on Formosa, looks what’s happening in SA. Don’t give up. Don’t ever give up!

About Men’s Wearhouse, it’s yet another example of anti-competitive forces winning the day. Not as it relates to Zimmer, but the merger/acquisition of Jos. A. Bank. Such an arrangement is good for no one but the investment houses and a few shareholders. With the arrangement, the competition’s over. Zimmer agrees with the possible merger/acquisition, so he’s anti-competitive. I don’t respect that, so I don’t feel for him all that much. I think he’ll be alright. This will give him time to nurture and grow his classic car collection.

Despite the rationalizing rhetoric offered to justify mergers/acquisitions, the effect is anti-competitive. Always. This is what happens with unregulated capitalism. It devours itself. Without the incentive to improve (i.e. competition), financial forces eventually suck the host dry and leave nothing but the bones. Mergers/acquisitions should be a very rare occurrence, but instead they rule the day. They help hide the fact that the merging companies can no longer generate organic growth of profit and revenue, and they generate huge transaction fees for the investment firms who arrange the merger/acquisition.

    • Janos Skorenzy December 11, 2013 at 2:16 pm #

Q identifies with the investment houses and its glorious morality of whatever happens is what is supposed to happen. Zimmer does protest the treatment he received but perhaps he believes he has to accept the “morality” of Capitalism or be seen as a traitor.

The whole thing is the Law of Jungle or the Law of the Fish – big eats the little. It’s depressing that people think this is the best human beings can do. People always seek some kind of gimmick or system to avoid the hard truth and work of a having to do what’s right.

Machiavelli’s fine, but Huck Finn will do just as well, and it’s funnier. I believe this excerpt from the The Adventures of pretty much sums up the conversation thus far.

“It’s the way I feel, too, Jim. But we’ve got them on our hands, and we got to remember what they are, and make allowances. Sometimes I wish we could hear of a country that’s out of kings.”

What was the use to tell Jim these warn’t real kings and dukes? It wouldn’t a done no good; and besides, it was just as I said, you couldn’t tell them from the real kind.

Nice quote from Mark Twain, LBB. I was just reading a biography of his best friend and neighbor at Nook Farm in Hartford, Rev. Joseph Twichell, a Civil War Hero and Minister of the local Congregational Church for 40 years.

One interesting story. At least once a week these two men would walk from their homes west of the city, out over Avon Mountain, to Bartlett Tower on Talcott Mountain, remarkably a round trip of 20 miles. The route they took, in 1875, was a trail thru farms and forests. Now its a 6 lane highway. Part of their tour took them up Hartford’s Albany Avenue, US44. The ironic thing is that this area is now a notorious, violent Ghetto, and two white men such as these walking thru there now would only get about 10 yards before they were robbed and shot. Twain was pretty good about looking into the future — he predicted space travel and the Radio — but not even he could predict what would happen to the city he called the most civilized place on earth.

It’s ludicrous that “politically correct” assholes censor the likes of Samuel Langhorne Clemens. When you think about it, he gave Blacks more than a fair shake, especially for his day. Believe it, or not, I think Lincoln understood it better than Twain even. Lincoln was prescient. He knew it would come to this and expressed his views about it prior to the Civil War. Twain wasn’t as cynical, which is amazing because he’s a pretty cynical guy in his own right. Lincoln knew you don’t turn over the keys to a formerly oppressed people with a grudge. And yet he let spite get the best of him even though prior to the Civil War he knew better. There’s still time and a small yet improbable chance for Whites in the U.S., but that window of opportunity is closing fast. The message of SA is clear. Whites everywhere should not be duped again. There can be no more giving up, let alone giving in.

swmnguy, in furtherance of JHK’s actual missive, said:

“We’re currently at the stage of fiddling with every possible abstract element in the equation, to make it appear that the overall system still works.

Once fraud becomes the only viable industrial enterprise, the end comes up quickly.”

As a prime example of this Randian me-first-me-always, psychopathic insanity, we have this implosion:

“Crazy Eddie has been one of America’s most vocal advocates of discredited free-market economics, so obsessed with Ayn Rand he could rattle off memorized passages of her novels. As Mina Kimes explained in a fascinating profile in Bloomberg Businessweek, Lampert took the myth that humans perform best when acting selfishly as gospel, pitting Sears company managers against each other in a kind of Lord of the Flies death match. This, he believed, would cause them to act rationally and boost performance.

If you think that sounds batshit crazy, congratulations. You understand more than most of America’s business school graduates.”

Note how not a whit of anything approaching ‘a product’ is involved; this guy’s whole schtick was squeezing blood from stones and turnips. (He should legally change his name to “Lamprey”, it would be a better fit for hedge-fund “managing”.)

Don’t worry, Oz, Sears Roebuck will be going toes up pretty soon. Have to admit, tho, they’ve had a pretty good run, almost 125 years. For a long time, round here anyway, they were the only game in town, so if you needed a chainsaw, socket wrenches or a lawnmower, or just about anything else, it was into the Ford and off to Sears at Corbins Corner, West Hartford, CT; a little family road trip. Also, they had those great catalogues, thick as a phone book. The first time I saw an escalator was at that Sears store back in the day.

    • beantownbill. December 11, 2013 at 1:18 pm #

There’s a Sears in my town. Every time I go in, the store’s nearly empty, the staff standing around talking to each other. It won’t be long.

I grew up in a city with an A&P. Remember them? Woolworth’s, Kresge’s and others gone. Also Filene’s, Jordan Marsh and RH Stearns, once very large Boston department stores. And my neighborhood drug store that had a soda counter, with two ice cream cones for 7 cents. My iPad doesn’t even have a cent key. God, I sound like my father, who used to lament about how much fun he had in his youth.

Hey Carl Im not saying Walmart hasn’t done a number on small business and Main Streets across the USA. It has. But the suburban strip mall predates Walmart. The Sears I mentioned was built in a cornfield at a country crossroads in 1953. You had to drive to it. Main Street was in the process of being abandoned even way back then.

Desmond Tutu’s home was burgled as he and the other vip hypocrites, foreign and domestic, were lined up to wallow in the putrefied fragrance of Mandela’s rotting corpse. It was the second time in four months Tutu’s been robbed. The first time, back in August, was while he and his wife slept. They were obviously unharmed, but maybe not the next time. As BRH mentioned, Sears had one hell of a run and they really stretched the retail store life cycle to its limits. But, it was inevitable. Without this Crazy Eddie Lampon boob, maybe they would have been somewhat respectful, albeit declining sales and market share, for another thirty to forty years before cessation, but that’s what shits like Lampon do; like ravenous and crazed hyenas eating the ass out of a dead rhino, they pick any remaining meat off the bones and suck the marrow before leaving the remainder to the microorganisms. Walmart, I believe, has reached its maturity phase but there’s no way they will even come close to the run Sears enjoyed, just as Tiger will never beat the Golden Bear’s record for most majors.

A&P hasn’t stopped breathing yet. Sure, its heart rate is currently 25 beats per minute and falling, but it still lives, if only barely. Maybe Lampon (that’s Tampon with an “L” instead of a “T”) can buy it and merge it with Tesco’s Fresh & Easy before putting a fork in both of them and killing them for good. That seems to be his forte, even if that “skill” is unacknowledged and unappreciated.

Q, I worked at Kroger in Dallas, Tx. during HS. Started at $3.35 and ended at $5.89. I thought I was a big shot making the latter figure, mostly because the majority of my friends didn’t work and I always had spending money than them. This Kroger was in a deteriorating part of Dallas and consequently it was robbed several times during my tenure. I started as a bag boy and ended as a checker, and that was back in the day when they still had registers that required you to key everything and remember produce codes. There were no scanners like they have now and no read out to tell you how much change to return to the customer. Checkers have it easy these days. They don’t even have to think. The computer does it all for them. Hell, there’s one (a checker) at my local grocery store who gets to sit on her ass as she checks you out. So, she doesn’t even have to stand let alone remember produce codes or key in prices from labels on the product. Instead of carpal tunnel, checkers these day get swiper elbow. I’m guessing she gets to do this because she’s overweight. Back when I was working at Kroger, they’d tell you to take a hike if you requested to sit while you were checking.

Occasionally, management would sucker me into working the night shift which was from 12 midnight until 8am. Getting time and a half made it enticing. So, I did it every now and then, but man was it tough to stay awake, and man was I nervous being there all alone waiting for a criminal to come in and blow me away in a robbery. I would go through scenarios in my head on how I would react to various situations should they arise during my eight hour graveyard shift. Thankfully, I never had to implement any of my many strategies, as if they would have worked as planned. The instruction was to front the shelves, meaning pull the product forward and face it properly, between checking anyone out. Well, I would get maybe three customers during the entire eight hours, so I was fronting shelves most of the time, but not really. I learned the fine art of falling asleep standing up. I couldn’t help it. It just happened. Time and a half for being potential target practice for a drive-by robbery and sleeping on your feet. Not bad. Problem was, once you “volunteered,” they were always hitting you up to do it again and again, so I just wouldn’t answer the phone when they called. I had a way of knowing it was Kroger that was calling. Call it a sixth sense.

Kroger’s still doing fine, but who knows for how long. The grocery business is tough. As you know, the margins are slim but the volume is huge, or it better be huge. There’s not a lot of room for sloppy operations and if you don’t control shrinkage (not the winter variety that reduces a penis to something unrecognizable from its former glory), it will eliminate those thin margins in a heartbeat.

OK – If you follow the news at all, you have to have seen this.

I first saw it yesterday on Mashable, and read some of the very first comments. Several comments said, “This is obviously PhotoShopped and Mashable sucks and I will never visit Mashable again.”

At any rate, and regardless of your politics – you need to find some humor in here, somewhere or another!

And I should clarify by saying that I first saw the -story- on Mashable, not the particular series of photos with the hilarious commentary – that The Wire ran subsequently, and to which I linked.

One thing that this should COMPLETELY put to rest is the idea that our 😛 OTUS is a raging gay, and that Michelle is his beard.

Because, I’ll tell you people, Pres. Obama’s interactions with Ms. Helle are definitely those of a heterosexual – perhaps even a Tailhound or an Horn-dog.*

And believe me, I know tailhounds and horndogs, having been one for more than 4 decades so far. Just ask my wife.

Every single proposal to deal with our weakened economies, whether they address housing markets, budget deficits, overall federal and personal debt, or pensions systems, is geared towards the same idea: a return to growth. Not so. In terms of this question, I’m an Archeo-Futurist. I believe we can only go forward based on the Wisdom of the Past. But that doesn’t mean (and cannot mean) repeating it. No, go back to where we went off the Trail and go forward from There. Leftism is a dead of controlled opposition allowed by the Globalists.

So we regain a Living Tradition but on a higher turn of the spiral – one that includes technology. But Blacks have to go.

What’s missing here is critical thinking. You JHK groupies would do well to critique each and every post. But to do that, you must be informed and dissect everything.
But as followers, you (collective) just take everything that JHK says as gospel. You offer nothing of value to the god you revere.
Leaders (if in fact he is one) need cognizant members to challenge every thought, statement, and attempt at dogma.
All I see here is pandering and petty bickering; tolerating racist screeds from the likes of Janos, who, I might add, offers nothing but hate and ignorance.
JHK would be better served by participants who actually care and are engaged. But your dis-service to your leader is obvious and severely lacking.
JHK rarely responds to comments here; that is telling.

You’re not gonna’ like this, Janos –

But children of recently arrived non-white immigrants are outscoring the children of native born (white) British, by large margins – according to recent studies.

“We in America have gotten used to vast gaps between blacks and whites on test scores. But this was not always the case, in places where there was anything like comparable education.
Back in the 1940s, before the vast expansion of the welfare state and the ideology of victimhood used to justify it, there was no such gap on test scores between black schools in Harlem and white, working class schools on New York’s lower east side.”

Read it again. Blacks from Africa (perhaps a select group) are meeting the standards “nearly” 60% of the time. Wow, I mean WOW. The vast population from the Caribbean? Less than 50% of the time. How much less I wonder. Nice ambiguity.

Whites in ONE burrough are scoring beneath some of the Blacks. How many we don’t know because of the Caribbean ambiguity. Less than the African Blacks evidently. This is possible. Low IQ Whites do get concentrated in certain urban areas. They used to use them over here to cherry pick studies too. Compare the White Dummies with the smartest Blacks and call it equality – and call Whites who knew about statistics and psych studies bigots.

If you want to accept one flawed study over a century of steady findings go ahead. But you are straining the gnat and swallowing the camel.

I’d be interested in your comments about this analysis of Spielberg’s Lincoln. Yes, I know it’s not a coveted resource, this publication, but it popped up in a Google search and some of what is said is not without merit. I cannot get myself to watch this movie. I figured it was a whitewash of history and pure propaganda, so I flip right past it on the channel guide every time and it’s always there. Most other movies come and go from the channel listing rather quickly, but not Lincoln. I wonder why?

Spielberg’s been getting on my nerves in the last five to eight years. Can he retire already and make room for someone more objective and impartial? Janos, your comments on this analysis would be greatly appreciated. I bring up Lincoln because like Mandela, Lincoln has been channeled by the same faux moralist hypocrites, especially Obama. Obama made it a point of attaching himself to Lincoln, first and foremost, early on in his initial presidential campaign run. And it’s no coincidence he rose to significance representing Illinois. I’m surprised they didn’t create the narrative of Obama growing up in a log cabin. It would have made the concept of a Black Lincoln complete.

Yes, he’s a Jew and therefore against the White Western Civilization. As you know they were influential in the overthrow of South Africa. There’s a superb series of articles over at Kevin Macdonald’s site about the Jewish role in destroying the White Australia policy. Australia now is headed for a Chinese majority with lots of race war with Black Africans and Muslims too. I’ll track it down for you if you want. It’s one of the Occidental sites.

Try Abraham Lincoln, Vampire Hunter as an alternative. It’s just as real as the mainstream movie and a lot more fun.

As the Soviet Union became healthier under Putin, Hollywood began to equate them with Nazis. Whites who love themselves and their Nation are generic Nazis according to the Spielbergs and Kdogs of the world.

Lincoln wanted Blacks sent out of the United States, either back to Africa or the tropics of Central or South America. He told Blacks to their face that they were “different” and had no place here with us even when he was in the White House.

Check out Ann’s podcast. Love of the World is what’s doing us in. And that means always going along to get along – your religion. When the General was confronted by the Black Congressman who thought Guam was going to tip over if more troops were sent, as Ann said, he should have walked right out and denounced him, calling for his resignation on the grounds of gross incompetence or feeble mindedness. But the General wanted to keep his position and of course, his Pension. They all do – even though they’re not going to get any since the system will soon collapse.

Anyway, once everyone is worrying about their pension, good men are effectively neutralized and neutered. As Pierce said, White South Africans gave up their freedom to keep their wealth, and of course will lose both. Compare them with the Voortrekers who went into the wilderness seeking freedom. I know I’m off topic, but I don’t know what all the hubbub is with the fellow in South Africa signing for the world leaders at the Mandela funeral. He was speaking in tongues. This is an emotive, interpretative form of communication practiced by religious, psychotic, theatrical and musical types. Abstract Expressionism, perhaps, would be the equivalent in the visual arts.

I’ve never seen this level of speaking in tongues carried out in sign, but it was extraordinary – artful and fully appropriate to the event.

“People are schmucks…or, as Jeshua ben Joseph said, “Cast not your pearls before swine.”” – Greg K.
    ==========

Last week, in regard to the canonization of Mandela, I said: “It has taken me a lifetime to realize no one deserves to be idolized.” Not Washington, Lincoln, Jesus, Muhammed, Gandhi, Churchill, Mao or Hitler.

Of all our living US presidents only Bush the Elder was fortunate enough to have a plausible excuse (age) to avoid the show. The rest, including most of the worlds other leaders were trapped by political correctness whether they liked it or not. Such is the life of politicians.

I was reminded of this truth (about idolizing and canonization) while reading a book titled In Xanadu. Here are a few lines from it concerning St Blaise:

…almost nothing is known about the historical St Blaise, except that he was bishop of Sebaste (Roman Sivas) and was martyred during the persecutions of Diocletian. However, lack of facts never stopped mediaeval hagiographers from assembling impressively detailed saints’ lives. According to the late, apocryphal, and apparently completely fictional Acts of Saint Blaise, the bishop ‘dwelt in a cave where he was fed by birds and wild animals who came to visit him in crowds and would not depart until he extended his hand in blessing and healed any that were ailing’. This curious ministry continued until the saint was discovered by a party of hunters searching for animals to be killed in the Sebaste amphitheatre (Christians had run out). Blaise was promptly arrested and taken back to Sivas with them. It was an eventful journey. Blaise not only persuaded a wolf to return a pig he had stolen from a penniless widow, but also saved a boy fatally choking from a fishbone in his throat. Sentenced to death, his ‘flesh was torn by iron combs such as are used to card wool’ and as a result Blaise became the patron saint not only of wild animals, pigs and sore throats, but also of wool merchants…..In the early Middle Ages his cult had spread fast, collecting further legends as it went……To this day, most Catholic churches in Britain mark the third of February with the ceremony of the Blessing of the Throats, when two unlighted candles are held against the necks of the faithful. In Ireland the church has ruled that this useful precaution against sore throats may also be administered to dairy cattle.

I am embarrassed to admit that as a gullible youth I had my throat blessed.

There are Orthodox hermits who still live that way today. Oh you haven’t heard? Haven’t met any in your town? Just think of what else is going on that you don’t know about.

Animals will love and trust people in a higher state. But it has to be real. Many Orthodox saints had bears as friends in old Russia. That fool in Alaska presumed – thought he was higher than he was. He got et.

    From a commenter at ArchDruid:

“…people ponder why nothing seems to come from the quite heated battles that occur on the variety of grounds the internet provides. Any to all sides might have valid points, but the other side never seems to get it.

From my view in the cheap seats, it always seems to me that people miss that to hear the other side, you would have to be willing to confront that some fundamental belief about yourself might be wrong.”
    ….the primitive @ archdruid…

Seems to me that K and Janos could both benefit from this idea.

Me too, of course, but I’m working on it.

And I’m still certain that new incoming immigration into the US needs to be drastically reduced for the good of all concerned – if anyone has any new ideas why they are right and I am wrong on this issue.

I was asking in a rhetorical way and in a way to annoy Kgod. Kdog “knows” who the real enemy is: White Heterosexual Capitalist and/or Christian men. Do you know who your enemies are? You better choose a side – and the right one. Your enemies have already scoped You out. Choosing to be on their side would be the wrong move for you.

The Arch-Druid doesn’t include himself in that prognostication. And he knows who he hates – the same people as Kdog.

And Yes Virginia, I mean Prog, Blacks are our Enemy, but not the only one. Some of the other enemies have gotten inside your head or you’d know that already. Female teachers tell little boys that it takes two to fight – training them to be cowards and take abuse. But for a Noble Man or even a just a Normal Man, it only takes one to start a fight. Blacks chose the low road a long time ago. They chose not to forgive and forget. Even as Whites were endeavoring to give up prejudice, Blacks were gleefully living up to those prejudices, enabled by the Liberals. So Blacks have chosen to become our Enemy. We can’t make them renounce that. We can only accommodate them in their martial desire, or submit to their Tyranny and violence.

It’s scary to go against the Liberal Superego and become a Real Human Being – just as it would be for a Fundamentalist to go against his Fundamentalist Superego. But it must be done. Read Joseph Campbell’s “The Hero’s Journey”.

“You don’t own a generous swath of land in the deep South or anywhere else but do correct me if I am wrong asshole. Would you expect all African Americans to move there voluntarily and how would the land be acquired.” ….k-dog to janos….

Yeah, Janos won’t engage you on this fantasy of his – because he can’t make any sort of objective laws of physics or human behavior fit.

Yet – he clings to the fantasy. Which is sort of sad. And unhelpful.

      • Janos Skorenzy December 12, 2013 at 11:55 pm #

Calm down. I just didn’t get around to your post. I’ll talk to anybody. I’m not a vicious ideological snob like Ozone. Now look: it’s a Vision, the right thing to do. I know it’s not on the political horizon. And I know few people have any vision or the will incarnate them. But as Theodore Herzl said in the early 20th Century, If you think it’s just a fantasy then it is. If you take it seriously, it can happen. The Jews are extraordinary and made it come true.

We aren’t on the same level at all so we will have to wait until Civil War and Race War leaven the field. Then it may begin to happen organically. It already is. What? The break up of America by race. One of the largest movements of people in American History is Whites fleeing Mexifornia. I mean you do realize that things are happening that don’t get reported, right? And Blacks in a less dramatic fashion have been returning to the South for decades now, their mission of the destruction of nearly every major city accomplished. And Blacks are being ethnically cleansed from California by the Mexicans as well.

So Mexicans will take the Southwest even though it’s not decreed. Or maybe it has been at a higher level. In any case, it is happening. Conservative Whites will take other areas. Liberal Whites their own areas. Prog may find himself behind enemy lines.

Some people will outcomes and work for results. Others just drift along carried by events and by those with Will. We have become the latter by and large. But the events are moving in the same direction as the plan to split up America. It’s not My Plan. Many have talked about this. It would make things easier and avoid tremendous suffering if we were to implement such a plan. But we wont – at least not until millions have already died.

        • K-Dog December 13, 2013 at 12:29 am #

          You said:

“We’ll give them a generous swath of land in the deep South.”

That statement expresses a will to incarnate a plan but now you say that everything may happen organically after a Civil War and Race War leavens the field.

By saying we’ll give them a generous swath of land in the deep South but then saying it may happen organically you are.

          1) Continuing to not answer the question.

          or

          2) Saying that you advocate a Civil War and Race War.

You can’t say it may happen organically and simultaneously say that we’ll give them a generous swath of land because if all black Americans decide to move to a generous swath of land in the deep south on their own there is no need to give them what they will already have.

So which is it 1) or 2) ?

          • Janos Skorenzy December 13, 2013 at 12:43 am #

Right. Just so, California will become a de facto Mexican state before it is legalized as such. Or perhaps it will become its own State apart from Mexico. That has yet to be determined. The worst situation would be a continuance of the façade where they are a de facto Mexican state yet continue to suck off of the volkgut of the American People – the real ones that is.

Ideally we would split up and give each of the Peoples part of America. But that would take political genius akin to the creation of Switzerland and its cantons. Such a genius is foreign to us and very rare in the world in any case.

One of the next next disasters to unfold will be making America bilingual. Countless Whites will be ruined just as many English Quebecers were. That will feed White resentment nicely. Demonic laughter. Hit the Anglos in their pockets – that’s their souls.

    • Janos Skorenzy December 13, 2013 at 12:32 am #

I’ve talked about this many times to many posters. Your reality of multi-cult hell is what’s sad and “unhelpful”. Such a “State” is a sad state of affairs – opposed to the objective laws of human psychology. More than one Culture in a State is like having more than one mind in a body – madness. And no, the Blacks can’t adapt and the Mexicans aint gonna. And what are the White Boys gonna do about it? Nuthin cuz they got no guts, balls, or common sense. Or at least their leaders don’t.

Laws of Physics? I’m not so advanced on those. Not as bad as the Black Congressman who thought Guam might capsize if more troops were sent to it though.

Here’s a good read from Rolling Stone.

“A decade or so ago, you wouldn’t have seen white people just hanging out in downtown Camden. Now they’re here by the hundreds every day. “There wasn’t no white people up in this motherfucker,” says Raymond, the self-described gangster who was shot six times. Now, he says, the city is full of white kids on dope. “The last few years, it’s like an epidemic surge,” he says.

That’s the crazy thing about this city. The Camden story was originally a controversial political effort to isolate urban crime and slash municipal spending by moving political power out of dying nonwhite cities. And they do it, this radical restructuring backed by the best in Baghdad-style security technology, and for a second or two it looks like it’s working – only the whole thing might be rendered moot in the end by the collapse of the rest of America. All over the country, we’ve been so busy arguing over who’s productive and who isn’t that we might not be noticing that the whole ship is going down. There’s no lesson in any of it, just a giant mess that still isn’t cleaned up.” ….excerpt…..

I was through a couple today and both were very crowded. So crowded I left the first one because the line was too long. But then it is Christmas season and it has been the first warm day in a week of exceptionally cold temperatures. People have been somewhat shut in all week.

Hell man, if you are not at Ft. Mead then say hi next time. Coffee’s on me. And bring Comrade Dystopia with you. I haven’t seen him for a long time.

And the buzzer goes Bzzzzzzzzzzz you loose.

“”We plan to use triple-junction photovoltaic cells on a micro-channel cooled module which can directly convert more than 30 percent of collected solar radiation into electrical energy and allow for the efficient recovery of an additional 50 percent waste heat,”

What idiot added a thirty percent conversion efficiency to a fifty percent that does not even apply to energy conversion on a system with a horrible EROEI.

          I did pretty good.

      • johnwdb December 13, 2013 at 2:32 pm #

I usually agree with you K-Dog, especially on all things thermodynamic, but here I’m not so sure. Let’s say 10 kWh or solar energy hit the collecting plate. If there is a 30 percent conversion rate, that means 3 kWh is captured as usable energy. The other 7 kWh are either reflected or lost as waste heat. We would call this 30% efficient in chem Eng. However, as with chem Eng processes, waste heat can be recovered. Depending on how they chose to calculate it (it isn’t clear whether they meant 50% of the original incident solar energy or 50% of the waste), it could be true that 80% is captured to do useful work.

More likely, they mean 50% recovery of waste, which would yield 30% + .5*70% = 65%. It’s very difficult to design a process that is greater than 70% efficient, so I bet that’s what it is. Whether they could actually use all that waste heat recovered is a different story, and, as you say EROEI is a different story, as well.

        • K-Dog December 13, 2013 at 3:50 pm #

Beware the semantics. The heat was identified as waste.

Waste is waste and in an article such as this many semantic tricks are common. I also saw the 65% you did and realized that 50% conversion of heat to energy in a situation like this was probably a false claim. Had I seen a reasonable heat energy conversion efficiency there I would have assumed the heat was actually being captured and being converted to energy. But an efficiency of 50% heat conversion in the desert would be difficult to achieve with devices this small even without taking into consideration the maximum conversion possibilities of the Carnot Cycle. I smell a rat.

Another question is where is the energy being used to cool the solar cells being accounted for and if the cells are being cooled then all the heat is waste. Another reason to disregard the extra 35%.

I think the article is Hopium for the masses or as the Archdruid puts it just another Lullaby.

I’d actually like to see something like this succeed and that we would have the wisdom not to just leverage the energy into just another bubble ending in another crisis downstream.

  94. Lord Blaby of Lawson December 13, 2013 at 1:52 pm #

It would be fitting if Madiba meant terrorist.

His other name, which most people don’t use because they can’t pronounce it, and neither can I, is Rolihlahla which is a Xhosa word meaning “troublemaker.” I’d say that is equally appropriate. Imagine the Danish tart who was soliciting to blow Obama trying to pronounce Rolihlahla. Maybe that’s what Obama and she were laughing about before she told him she could suck a softball through a garden hose and didn’t mind that Obama was Black so long as he scrubbed up beforehand.

It’s nice to know Hollywood doesn’t completely share the same view about Nelson Rockefeller Mandela as Charlize Theron. Another blond with a healthy bosom, Victoria Jackson of SNL fame sees through the hype.

I wonder what Sally Struthers thinks? Victoria should rethink her stance against the abortions. Perhaps that’s (the abortions) a good thing, considering. How about Barbara Streisand? Maybe Player and de Klerk could invite her down for a nostalgic celebration and she could sing The Way We Were. The tears would flow, that’s fer sure.

    • orionoir@gmail.com December 13, 2013 at 7:24 pm #

even the old mainframes still have errors popping up. complexity at some point overwhelms all systems… i’m sure there’s a proof of that somewhere. (theory of incompleteness? no system contains all possible true statements, and, when sufficiently large, no system is w/o falsity.)

when i was still working, i was on a team for a medium size financial outfit making legacy cobol code y2k compliant. we found zillions of math errors in it, but it was all sacrosanct, had been sec certified for decades. a child could’ve done better arithmetic. still, $60b assets rested firmly upon its accuracy. i believe the hardware was good old ibm iron.

That fifty percent was a false claim. That article had the scientific rigour of a marketing brochure but that’s good enough for you. Not good enough for me. I deal with facts.

And who would bother criticising an article like this. The article has an obscure audience and brings nothing really new to the table. Systems like this have been under development for years. I prefer the Stirling Engine with parabolic mirror version myself.

jhk’s prose sometimes takes my breath away like copd; t’is a thing of beauty, what he does with words. still, lately i’ve been entertaining the idea that the verbally fluent are often vulnerable to their own intoxicating aurae, eg, their facility with language takes them further from accuracy, not closer, in the same way that a precisely calibrated dashboard often leads a driver astray. that recent celebrity who died in a porsche, for example: was it his competence and not his incompetence which connected him to the tree?

debt is alarming when you’re in it and can’t pay it back: human beings are entitled to freak on such occasions. but giant banks and sovereign nations are not people: they have no emotions. all these $trillions which drive jhk to such apoplexy are merely pieces on a chessboard. nations rise, nations fall, real people end up starving or dying of thirst, but there is no drama in the numbers. remember, we have no creditors on mars: the debt of world is a zero sum.

as for financial logic, econ 101 tells us that inflation favors the debtor, not the creditor. if anybody has reason to stay awake at night, it’s the chinese, who would be none too happy to be paid back in debased greenbacks. bernanke’s printing press may be a tool of the devil, but it’s on the side of debtors like us, and homeowners like us, too, because the quickest way to revive real estate is to make the mortgage debt hangover go away. as for the labor market from hell, who among us is so secure as not to want a little more stimulus?

Those verbally fluent do not take themselves seriously enough to become vulnerable to their own intoxicating aurae. There may be some divergence from accuracy at a particular moment true but the search for accuracy never stops with the truly creative. The creative are far more likely to find accuracy than anyone else. The creative have more capacity to doubt and examine. Creativity is always trying to find new ways of looking at things. At any particular point in the never ending journey of expression divergence can be misunderstood and seen as the whole when actually divergence is but a snapshot in a dynamic saga of motion.

k-dog i appreciate your thinking and i think i follow it pretty well. i suppose it’s a very old argument, whether human intelligence is a force for good or not. thomas jefferson put his stamp on the optimistic view, eg, that gradually wisdom accumulates, but surely there have been equally smart pessimists who have found the opposite, eg, that good is perishable and evil everlasting.

Wisdom accumulates but it also evaporates if not stored in the proper containers. Pessimists often view the world with more acuity than the optimist but then the pessimist becomes mired in despair.

” Thomas Jefferson put his stamp on the optimistic view, eg, that gradually wisdom accumulates, but surely there have been equally smart pessimists who have found the opposite, eg, that good is perishable and evil everlasting”.

Must it be a binary situation, one way or the other? The rock of Sisyphus must be pushed up the mountain and it will roll down again yet we must whistle while we work or risk going mad. The truth is in the middle. Let the work be joyous and choose the gently sloping path.

jhk’s prose sometimes takes my breath away like copd; t’is a thing of beauty, what he does with words. still, lately i’ve been entertaining the idea that the verbally fluent are often vulnerable to their own intoxicating aurae, eg, their facility with language takes them further from accuracy, not closer, in the same way that a precisely calibrated dashboard often leads a driver astray. that recent celebrity who died in a porsche, for example: was it his competence and not his incompetence which connected him to the tree?

Well, holy shit! A thinking individual. A critically thinking individual, no less.

It would be a great thing to have the comments section truncated at about 50 posts eliminating redundancy and forcing attention on the topic at hand. A limit on the number of words per post would encourage focus as well. Currently, we do not know the word limit until after submit the post and an addendum message says “we are awaiting approval”. Links should also be limited to in text footnotes so they don’t interrupt the flow and distract from this webpage. The comments section is for intellectual discussion, not to promote another blog; therefore, we shouldn’t have to visit someone’s blog in order to get their reaction.

    • K-Dog December 14, 2013 at 1:40 pm #

Limiting to a fixed number won’t work because then gov-mint troll with the multiple alias and 24 hour staffing will overpower any individuals who don’t advocate the approved status-quo. Read carefully this weeks stream of consciousness (or stream of bull whichever you prefer) and rube-i-con has admitted to commenting under at least two different characters this week. rube-i-con is not the only individual commenting under two separate avatars. I commend your desire to figure out how comments could be modified to encourage intellectual discussion and eliminate banal distraction but it is not as easy as you think. There are those here with the specific intent of preventing intellectual discussion and will pervert any means put in place to encourage intellectual discussion and use that means to prevent it.

As far as links go I generally make mine using anchor tags so they are essentially footnotes and when I deviate from that it is for good reason and appropriate. I’ve memorised how they are made and find it to be no great effort to go the extra mile.

For now we are stuck with, caveat lector. Jim in his redesign did improve things but we even have one here now who regularly protests and wants to return to the days when one great power here would drone intellectually oriented posts with thousands of Chinese characters which when translated made nonsense and were lifted from Chinese news blogs in a random sort of way.

      • K-Dog December 14, 2013 at 1:47 pm #

Sometime when I make anchor tags they mess up like this one did:

        extra mile

What happened in that link was the heat from my left paw caused the integrated trackpad on the laptop I’m using to cause my cursor to jump and I wasn’t able to completely undue the damage. I wish I could turn it off as I use a mouse anyway.

To clarify, though I shouldn’t have to, I don’t say all Blacks are bad merely that they are the Enemy. You were a soldier once. Didn’t you ever think this through? Perhaps you didn’t have to if you didn’t see combat. And some guys can’t soldier unless they every enemy combatant (and even citizens) as scumbags. That’s why the Police routinely abuse people: we are the Enemy now.

[]our host, JHK, has gone from peak oil… to concentrates\ totally on economic problems.]

without meaning to insult the host (eg, a guest criticizing the food) i do have to agree and wish it were not so. jhk is a brilliant prose stylist; i hope someday, probably posthumously, the world will celebrate this; and he caught the peak-everything aesthetic and zeitgeist perfectly. but he’s a babe in the woods when it comes to all things financial, and i wish someone he trusts would tell him so.

financial writing is beautiful, of course. but if you’re consistently wrong the readership forces you hang it up, that is, if you’re writing for investors. even cnbc’s cramer, a brilliant tv personality on par with sarah palin, his record re stockpicking is abysmal, and serious money knows it darn well and mocks him accordingly. jhk should fear such a fate.

imho, jim’s triumph is _the geography of nowhere_. if you haven’t read it recently, pick it up again. words fail me when i imagine how to praise that book.

his fiction is workmanlike and passable, but i still say if you can’t write a decent sex scene, you shouldn’t be writing fiction.

his financial prose — this week especially — is a goddamn thing of beauty, but if you are planning to trade on his insight you’re as deranged as he.

what was it einstein said? make things as simple as possible but not more so? don’t apply the language of beauty to the world of money.

About Germany`s solar/renewables energy production in April of this year?

Today’s graph of the graph is a follow-up to Wednesday’s graph of the day, which highlighted the fact that Germany set a new record for solar output of 22.6GW on Monday.

On Thursday, it did not set a new solar record, but in combination with consistent output of wind energy, renewable generation reached record capacity of 36GW, and for three hours between noon and 3pm exceeded the combined contribution of coal, gas and nuclear plants.

  116. Lord Blaby of Lawson December 14, 2013 at 4:06 pm #

As was mentioned earlier, Nelson Rockefeller Mandela was aptly named Rolihlahla, or “troublemaker” in Xhosa. What was the plan that was drawn up during his cozy stay at Robthem Island? The ANC was compromised, first by the USSR and then by Great Britain. Many in the top ranks were sell-outs of one sort or another, and still are. For how long were many of them compromised is the question. Probably far longer than most would wager. Hani wasn’t cooperating and couldn’t be trusted. Like Serpico, he wouldn’t be bought, and so he had to be eliminated. What a great idea to use White patsies. Who would question it? Hardly anyone, obviously. But cui bono (so many of them have made out like bandits hence Robthem Island) goes to the ANC, and in fact, Winnie has alleged as much. Here’s a thread discussion about it. Some of the comments barely pass as literate, but the truth if there is such a thing is in there somewhere.

    • Lord Blaby of Lawson December 14, 2013 at 4:12 pm #

A comment from that link that is coherent and evocative.

“The soft-cock revolution” that culminated in the ’94 elections was bought and paid for. The ANC in general was ready to co-operate with the white government to bring us a black flavoured old South Africa touted as new and reformed, Hani being principled would have wanted what all genuine revolutionaries did, socialist transition and terminate all resource extraction leases on our soil, incorporate MK vets into SANDF and rebuild the legal/courts system oh and also a fast tracked land redistribution programme. All that would have caused a deadlock at the negotiating table and the ANC top brass were all too ready to hit the feeding trough. Two assasination attempts and a sustained character assasination preceded Hani’s murder so it is not hard to think that many particularly on the ANCs side knew, I can even imagine that those that knew might have had a running joke behind his back like “dead man walking” instead doubling his security and exposing the plot. Mr Renaissance would have not succeeded Nelson had Hani lived and therein lies the lie.

It certainly explains the aftermath. Hani wanted to fast-track it, and the corrupt ANC brass wanted to feed on the Golden Calf. If so, the wealthy Whites are truly traitors to their race just as is the ANC leadership. In the end, money wins/rules the day.

“Take my wife….Please take my wife!”

    – Rodney Dangerfield

    Be croc wise
Crocodiles are potentially dangerous. Never take unnecessary risks in crocodile habitat. You are responsible for your own safety, so please follow these guidelines and be croc wise in croc country.

Obey crocodile warning signs – they are there for your safety and protection.
Never swim in water where crocodiles may live even if there is no warning sign present.
Swimming or standing in water above knee-height near a crocodile warning sign or where estuarine crocodiles are frequently seen, is illegal in protected areas (you can still enter the water if you have a reasonable excuse, e.g. launching a boat).
When fishing, always stand a few metres back from the water’s edge and never stand on logs or branches overhanging the water.
Never clean fish or discard fish scraps near the water’s edge, around campsites or at boat ramps.
Stay well back from any crocodile slide marks. Crocodiles may be close by and may approach people and boats.
Boats and vehicles must never be brought within 10m of an estuarine crocodile in the wild – it is illegal unless part of a commercial crocodile viewing tour, or there is a reasonable excuse, e.g. where a creek is less than 10m wide.
Never dangle your arms or legs over the side of a boat. If you fall out of a boat, get out of the water as quickly as possible.
Never provoke, harass or interfere with crocodiles, even small ones.
Never feed crocodiles – it is illegal and dangerous.
Camp at least 2m above the high water mark and at least 50m from the water’s edge. Avoid places where native animals and domestic stock drink.
Never leave food scraps, fish frames or bait at your campsite. Always check that previous campers have not left these behind.
Never prepare food, wash dishes or pursue any other activities near the water’s edge or adjacent sloping banks.
Be more aware of crocodiles at night and during the breeding season, September to April.

And what about Herman Cain, or Thomas Sowell – you’re gonna’ make them enemies because of skin pigmentation. In a lot of ways, they have more in common with you than do many “Whites.”

At some point, Janos, you stop being provocative and become alienating to all.

Well Prog, many people have thought and written about this issue. It’s hardly new. Some guys can’t soldier unless they think the Enemy is completely evil, everyone of them. During WW2, GI’s were conditioned to think that way about the Germans – even after the War. But it happens every time to some degree. No of course Sowell isn’t the Enemy, Blacks are. Sowell only is to the extent he supports them. And he is in the middle – sometimes good, sometimes not. A few years ago he claimed Blacks inherited their flaws from Southern Whites. Pretty hateful and obviously untrue. The poor Whites he was slandering never owned slaves. In fact, the Plantation owners encouraged Blacks to think themselves better than the poor Whites.

You have to do better. As it is, you are unfit to survive what may be coming. Even Sowell admits there may be a race war. So are you going to be a conscientious objector – even though you wear the uniform?

  122. progress4what December 15, 2013 at 1:08 pm #

“I want you to know I don’t appreciate that.”
….ozone, paraphrased – concerning his never ignoring reality….

I suspect you and I would get along OK in person, O3 – because there we’d have the visual and non-verbal cues to keep us off of points of severe disagreement – and on “safe” topics, like music, for example.

Backrowheckler (aka Marlin, aka Comrade Dystopia) knows this – which is why he speaks favorably of both of us.

But – here on the internet – I’m not sure that there’s any benefit to avoiding argument and trying to get along – on important topics.

And the state of racial relationships in the United States certainly qualifies as an important topic.

Consider this interactive map from National Geographic. And consider that the US is presently one of the most prosperous? and most diverse? nations on the planet. And consider what will happen as that prosperity declines. And – consider what could happen if that prosperity ended in a sudden *lights out* disaster.

Just consider it. And, consider that it’s better to talk about things while the lights remain on, and the food trucks continue to run.

    http://newswatch.nationalgeographic.com/2013/08/21/interactive-map-color-codes-race-of-every-single-american/

“Since most of the dots are smaller than a pixel on a computer screen, high concentrations of different colors can combine at wider zoom levels to create a purplish hue, like in this photo of the Amtrak route that runs through Washington, D.C., Baltimore, Philadelphia, and New York. So purple is an indication of diversity on a regional scale.

Still, what looks like racial integration from a distance can change upon zooming. Scroll over Minnesota, for example, and you’ll get a nebula of purple and blue dots around Minneapolis. But zoom in and segregation becomes apparent on a neighborhood scale, as more red and green dots emerge.” ….nat geo…

    Q, you’ll like this:

    ” To: The Faculty

In light of the controversy regarding so-called grade inflation, please take a moment to review the grading guidelines rubric, reproduced below:

¶ The A+ grade is used only in very rare instances for the recognition of truly exceptional achievement.

For example: A term paper receiving the A+ is virtually indistinguishable from the work of a professional, both in its choice of paper stock and its font. The student’s command of the topic is expert, or at the very least intermediate, or beginner. Nearly every single word in the paper is spelled correctly; those that are not can be reasoned out phonetically within minutes. Content from Wikipedia is integrated with precision. The paper contains few, if any, death threats.

A few things can disqualify an otherwise worthy paper from this exceptional honor: 1) Plagiarism, unless committed with extraordinary reluctance. 2) The paper has been doused in blood or another liquid, unless dousing was requested by the instructor. 3) The paper was submitted late (with reasonable leeway — but certainly by no more than one or two years). ”

    Important post-Collapse safety tip:

Thanks for the tip. Perhaps we should reverse it and tip-off the crocodiles and alligators. In a post-Collapse, over-populated world with everyone scrambling for diminishing resources to survive, crocodiles and alligators will quickly become endangered. People will be gunning for them. In fact, it’d probably be wise to start a farm of either variety right now so you can get ahead of the game. What do you feed them, you ask? Initially, pre-Collapse, I suppose you can feed them chicken or something of that nature, but post-Collapse when law and order break down you can start feeding them your human captives. I’ve had alligator meat. It’s not too bad. It tastes like chicken (I know, that’s what everyone says about most mystery meats). Besides, by feeding humans to the farm-raised alligators and crocodiles, you’ll be doing your part in depopulating the planet to manageable numbers in a very sustainable and natural way. So, alligators and crocodiles be warned. Your future, after a brief banquet of human, will be tenders and boots.

Ted Bundy was a sort of salt water crocodile if you really think about it. So too is the NSA. They make great boots, and those boots are made for walking and that’s just what they’ll do. One of these days those boots are gonna walk all over you.

      Pucker,

Crocodiles have a lot of internal parasites and I’m not sure they are good eating. Do you have any factual info on this?

Seriously, inquiring dogs want to know.

“The effort was not a small one, the news agencies report. In fact, so much anti-terrorism work was being conducted in the virtual worlds that a separate “deconfliction” group was tasked with monitoring spies from the CIA, Pentagon, and FBI so that they wouldn’t interfere with — or waste time spying on — one another, according to Pro Publica.”

From: Orc And Dagger: U.S., U.K. Reportedly Spied On Gamers Online

I think ‘Q’s list will help out in clarifying the situation here though I see at least one on the list I suspect of being a real person.

    But I could be wrong!

And there is no ‘Reportedly’ about it.

“As it is, you are unfit to survive what may be coming.”
    ….janos….

Well, first of all, I’m probably better positioned than most on here to survive “what may be coming,” unless what’s coming is a large meteor strike on the N. Georgia mountains, that is.

And – if what’s coming is a swirling vortex of hate that destroys US society, then I’m not sure I’d WANT to survive it.

And you need to consider that “what may be coming” may not hew to your standards of proper societal unrest. It may just be, for example, 10 more decades of relatively peaceful decline. Coupled, of course, with massive population growth due to immigration – since immigration is unopposable because such opposition is evidence of hate filled racism. (There’s a Catch-22 in there, for anyone who wants to extract it for discussion.)

10 more decades of decline – punctuated, of course, with JHK’s weekly missives and predicted periodic economic catastrophes.

    Yee Haw and Giddy Up!

*although – I’d still give survival my best shot for the sake of kin and close friends.

I smell Georgia moonshine on thy breath.

Avoid the Catch-22 by discussing overpopulation first and immigration second. Not the other way around.

today i went to my local bookstore to buy The Geography of Nowhere; they did not have it but would be happy to order it for me; i was polite enough not to say, and why would i want you to do that, i’ll get it for half your price off amazon and it will be here the day after tomorrow. instead i bought Too Much Magic, which i had mostly read when it came out, standing around in the aisles, like a teenager reading porno off the rack because he’s too shy to pay for it.

as everyone here knows, the epigraph (? is that the word for a quote before the title page?) for Too Much is mike “iron mike” tyson’s

everyone has a plan til they get hit in the mouth.

I rarely BUY a book. I’m too cheap. I get them from the local library. If they don’t have it they can usually order it in from another library in their network. It usually arrives within a week. Such is the case with the book (In Xanadu) I am currently reading. It came from a library in Nutely, NJ.

If nobody has it I hassle my local library to acquire it.

No, that’s backrowheckler in the Farmington River valley – I’m on a little creek in the N. Georgia mountains. JHK ought to sell a program to this thread, eh?

You should have called me out when I expressed that non-progressive thought. You’re a bright guy. We could have had a discussion. I could have changed your mind.

Or – Heaven forfend – you might have changed my mind.

Anyway – glad you’re over your snit. And it’s interesting that you most remember Alexandra’s automobile, whereas I most remember her sailing experiences. She and I had a good little discussion about possible motivations and potential radar use among the Somali Pirates. (guess that’s what they should rename the Washington Redskins?)

@pro, i like to think to think that i’m open to suggestion. as a born-again atheist (from the cancer experience… a long story) i do try to let believers say their peace. even racists and i find some amount of common ground… my odd concordance with vlad remains valuable to me.

i’m not sure what it was, but my guess it was a north-south thing, perhaps re the civil war. lately i’ve come to see the split between new england and the former slave-holding states as far more ancient than this new world experiment… i think it goes back to ireland vs england, scotland vs reality, you know, our distant forebears. as wm faulkner wrote, blood will cry out.

i’ve had a close email buddy who is born and bred mississippi, although now he’s a fancypants lawyer in a big city. trivia: he played high school ball with walter peyton. (or was it earl cambell? some guy who is arguably the greatest ever, who came out of miss, that would be your guy.)

anyhow, we go round and round about the south vs north. he too is a faulkner fan. when i was a boy i read everything he wrote, if you call that reading, a ten year old moving his eyes back and forth over the sound and the fury etc. perhaps this is where my yankee attitude comes from: i bought faulkner’s idea that the south is cursed.

      all affection,

“Crocodiles have a lot of internal parasites and I’m not sure they are good eating.” ….k-dog….

Alligator is pretty good, I’ve eaten a good bit of it. It tastes like slightly greasy, and slightly muddy tasting, white meat chicken.

South of here – where it’s warm enough that the alligators don’t die over the winter – some of the chicken and turkey farmers raise ‘gators. Disposal of dead poultry from a big house, which can raise 50,000+ birds, gets to be a big issue. Alligators love dead chickens. Problem solved – with benefits.

Anyway, I have no idea how crocodile tastes. But any parasites will be killed if the cook gets the meat hot enough.

One of my uncles came home from WWII and raised a bit of a snit with my grandmother over her (hand-made, personal farm-raised, healthy and delicious) pork sausage. He told her she wasn’t cooking it well done enough. Fear of undercooked pork was something he’d evidently picked up in the Army Air Corps. “Well done, Mama. Pork’s got to be cooked WELL DONE!”

It was offensive enough to her that my own mom was still talking about it to me – over 40 years later.

What is it we say in the South? Never forgit, right?

      @pro, again:

point of fact: there has not been a case of trichinosis in the united states since the late 1950s. don’t worry about that sausage.

I suspect that even in the Outback that the Australian government would probably require a permit to raise saltwater Crocs?

I guess that one could feed the Crocs all of those wild, feral hogs in the Cape York Peninsula region? I read somewhere that they estimate that there are roughly 24 million wild, feral hogs running around Northern Queensland, Australia. One could bring in some redneck Americans for the round up. Offer ’em lots of free, ice cold Australian XXXX beer and feral pork barbeque. (The Australians say that it’s called “XXXX” because the Australians who drink it can’t read.)

Well said Nightshade. The North were the Puritans and the South the Cavaliers. The Purtians want to conquer the World and fill it with their fanaticism. Abortion clinics in Kabul and that kind of thing. That the North was wrong is increasingly obvious to all Men of good will. Our own Ozone is a perfect example of this demented breed. Kdog is a the same though he seem gentler at first glance. Don’t be fooled.

Of course it gets complicated. Many British Celts fled to Brittany before the Germanic onslaught of Angles, Saxons, and Jutes. Many Celtic Warriors came back with William the Conqueror and along with the Welsh made up much of his army.

[The North were the Puritans and the South the Cavaliers.]

@janos — as a personal practice i don’t click through other people’s links because of course the internet is full of froth and frothery beyond all comprehension.

still, i do urge you to give this somewhat “academic” piece, link below, a read. if nothing else the multi-colored map graphic is worth the price of admission.

the nightshade nick makes me smile, but for the life of me i cannot remember who you are, unless you’re vlad in a new wrapper. if your overarching theory of the world turns on race war or amway pyramid distributorship well then we’re not destined to be bffs. still, you’ve a nice turn of phrase and i’ve got a feeling there’s a whole lot i could learn from your pov so long as it doesn’t require me buying a gun.

It looks like QE is coming to an end.

Jim, how about a few words about the Mandela Extravaganza.

Like, for example, if we are so broke, how is there plenty of cash to fly several hundred pols across the world to attend a funeral.? It must’ve cost tens of millions.

  138. Lord Blaby of Lawson December 16, 2013 at 7:43 am #

If QE is indeed coming to an end, it’s because it no longer works as intended, not because it accomplished what official accounts say it has.

    • BackRowHeckler December 16, 2013 at 9:05 am #

I was thinking QE would become a permanent state of affairs. The next logical step is negative interest rates, where you pay the bank a fee to hold your money. Of course with mortgages and other loans the rates would not be negative.
