“Federal Reserve officials are closer to winding down their controversial $85 billion-a-month bond-purchase program, possibly as early as December, in the wake of Friday’s encouraging jobs report.”
That from the much-deservedly maligned John Hilsenrath, widely regarded to be the Federal Reserve’s ventrioloquist dummy over at the Wall Street Journal, as in, from God’s mouth to the jittery multitudes. Of course the jobs number was just another highly seasoned and over-leavened cupcake from the Bureau of Labor Statistic’s magic hedonic oven, so you can be sure that the predicate of that statement is… how to put it delicately… the latest arrant lie with hypothetical icing on top.
Everybody knows that the Federal Reserve’s money-pumping operations have become a replacement for what used to be an economy. Therefore, no more money pumping = no more so-called economy. It’s that simple. But it doesn’t mean that the Federal Reserve won’t make a gesture and I wouldn’t be surprised if they try it during the season that Santa Claus hovers over the national consciousness — or what little of that remains when you subtract the methedrine, the Kanye downloads, the fear of an $11,000 bill for an emergency room visit requiring three stitches, and all the other epic distractions of our time.
The next meeting of the Fed’s Open Market Committee (FOMC), where such things as taper-or-not are considered, is Dec. 17. The Fed has to make some kind of gesture to retain any credibility, so I suspect they’ll go for a symbolic shaving of five or ten billion a month off the current official bond-buying operation number of $85 billion a month (or $1.2 trillion a year). If they don’t do it, no one will ever believe them again. I call it the “head-fake” taper, because it is essentially a false move.
The catch is that the Fed has more than one back door for vacuuming up all sorts of other miscellaneous financial trash paper securitized by promises already broken, moldy sheet-rock housing, college loans defaulted on, car payments that stopped arriving eighteen months ago, credit cards maxed to oblivion, sovereign foreign economies visibly whirling down the drain, and untold casino bet derivative hedges. Loose talk has it that the Fed is buying up way more dodgy debt than the official number of $85 billion a month. And why not? They bailed out way more than the $700 billion official TARP figure back in 2009 — everything from insolvent European banks to Floridian motels on the REO junk-pile — so nobody should take any particular taper number seriously. They’ll just backfill as necessary.
But even in a world of seemingly no consequence, things happen. One pretty sure thing is rising interest rates, especially when, at the same time as a head-fake taper, foreigners send a torrent of US Treasury paper back to the redemption window. This paper is what other nations, especially in Asia, have been trading to hose up hard assets, including gold and real estate, around the world, and the traders of last resort — the chumps who took US T bonds for boatloads of copper ore or cocoa pods — now have nowhere else to go. China alone announced very loudly last month that US Treasury debt paper was giving them a migraine and they were done buying anymore of it. Japan is in a financial psychotic delirium scarfing up its own debt paper to infinity. Who’s left out there? Burkina Faso and the Kyrgystan Cobblers’ Union Pension Fund? The interest rate on the US 10-year bond is close to bumping up on the ominous 3.0 percent level again. Apart from the effect on car and house loans, readers have pointed out to dim-little-me that the real action will be around the interest rate swaps. Last time this happened, in late summer, the too-big-to-fail banks wobbled from their losses on these bets, providing a glimpse into the aperture of a black hole compressive deflation where cascading chains of unmet promises blow financial systems past the event horizon of universal default and paralysis where money stops moving anywhere and people must seriously reevaluate what money actually is.
I think we’ll see them try the head-fake taper. They must. It will be backstopped by and saturated in statistical lying, and everyone will have trouble parsing the probable effect because the chronic dishonesty loose in this land will have deformed and impaired all metrics of true value. At the heart of whatever remains of this economy is fire, and the officers of the Federal Reserve are playing with it. Pretty soon, we’ll get the un-taper, the final surrender to the crack-up boom that awaits before the western world has to go medieval.

AP reported he capped their pensions at 20K. That’s fair considering the average yearly income for employed U.S. Citizens is 40K. They should have paid off their cars and homes by now.
“Friday’s encouraging jobs report.” Yes set the bowls of chicken blood under the saint of wishful thinkings action figure and burn the incense. The jobs are 1.3 million shy of the previous 2008 January peak and we have more than 14 million working age adults than we did then. The uncounted long term unemployed are too numerous to count and labor force participation remains at decades long lows. As one of them who is looking I feel the slight thaw (I’m actually getting Interviews) and the pain (close only counts in hand-grenades and horseshoes). With one in three looking able to find in any reasonable time its a long cold winter. I’m expecting cheerleading to let in more of the best and the brightest from foreign lands by our democracy of corporate executives any day now. A small statistical uptick in the clusterfuck of lost jobs today will be tomorrows job glut with cries to up our population and lower the size of fast food French fries cardboard pockets. Not that that would not be a good idea for many. For those unable to flip burgers it wont be good at all. we are still begging for burgers.

Some job hunting humor for you: This guy is on a job interview and the HR manager is asking him the usual things: why he wants to work there, discussing his work experience and strengths, etc.
At one point in the interview the HR manager asks him what he would consider one of his major weaknesses. The guy replies,
“A weakness? I would say my honesty…my candor…I’m very, very honest”. HR manager is taken aback and says, “Interesting. You consider your honesty a weakness, but I have to say that as an HR manager, I think honesty is a strength!”
Guy pauses and says, “I don’t give a shit what you think!”

Ah, yeah! Trouble is I’m that guy. That very joke actually came up in an interview I had a couple of weeks ago. One of my irons that’s still in the fire. Afterwords I recalled that I had seen it in a Dilbert cartoon a few weeks earlier.
I appreciate the reminder. While honest I have one thing going for me. I am able to play my cards close to my chest and keep some things to myself. Sometimes I know things but keep them on the downlow. Problem there is that I see is doing that has not always served me well either and I’m changing. But putting it all together I’m thinking the best way is to be honest but do it with great diplomacy.
And never say you are hiding Jews in your basement.
In a similar boat… 8 months since layoff from a well paying job, getting the odd interview but no offers. A solid Resume with only 2 employers over the last 13 years helps somewhat, but I’m up against younger competitors with ivy league MBAs. One thing I did learn in a career workshop is to navigate the conversation away from “weaknesses” … that question is a red flag and a sign you have failed on some element of the interview. If put on the spot, I won’t joke and will reply that I am human and have made mistakes but do not perceive inherent weaknesses related to the job requirements.

K-D; I’ve had 12 different jobs from 2000 to 2009 each lasting anywheres from three months to 3 years with 1 month to 2 years between. A slow spiral down economically and extremely stressful on family life. My step-father then offerred to pay my tuition so I could go back to school (I was 49 at the time and now 52; and a great many thanks to him) and now that I have a masters I’m working 23-32 hours a week and will gross around $7,000.00 this year. We’re afloat because of my wifes 18,000.00 a year teaching position and two children which help us apply for Government assistance. It’s a Slow Emergency and economic fall… that being said don’t lose heart and keep pushing and looking for opportunities, even though most of them seem like your pissin’ in the wind.

The next tipping point? While we’ve all been keenly watching the antics on Wall Street in expectation of witnessing some disastrous fuck up, weird weather patterns are bedeviling the northern latitudes. Perhaps what the climate’s serving up might deserve a little more scrutiny?
There have been signs that this winter’s going to be intense, perhaps just a tad too intense for our fragile and increasingly complex support systems to handle; at least after several repeated blows. My sense has been that the proximate event that will trigger the cascading chaos that will culminate in the Great Wrath will be a climatic natural disaster. Might an especially severe winter storm be the proximate event?

But that would be peering into the abyss that is the comfortable home of something that is quite disinterested in the fate of Homo not-so-sapiens, and would peer back with a eons-old, incurious gaze that says, “You ain’t shit.” That’s just not done in this country, as it upsets cherished delusions and religious certainties which could cause an overload in the cognitive dissonance circuit.

It’s interesting how people’s perception pervade everything they do. I know people who seem to have everything going for them, yet don’t do any of the things they clearly could do to improve their situation. It’s because for some reason they don’t perceive that they have as many resources and options as they really do, and telling them so doesn’t help. It’s insanely frustrating to watch.
I’ve had the good fortune to travel over the past few years. I love looking out of airplane windows at the landscape below, particularly the human landscape. Flying over China is different from flying over Europe, and both are very different from flying over the good ol’ USA.
It’s obvious from 35,000 feet that America was founded by people who thought the world was infinite. Outside our urban centers, housing and roads “sprawl” for mile after mile. Along the Eastern seaboard, it’s impossible to tell where one “community” ends and the next one begins. The gigantic realms of subdivisions turn the whole landscape into not-quite-towns, where everyone has to drive a car to do the slightest errand, not to mention to go to work or to secure the means of basic sustenance.
Over China, outside the major cities, one sees little villages surrounded by the fields where the inhabitants work. 3 miles over is another little cluster of houses amid the fields. Those people don’t live lives I want to lead, but they live where they work and they really don’t need to go anyplace else. They wouldn’t have a need for a car.
Europe isn’t quite the same, nor is Japan, from 35,000 feet. But they have set up their living arrangements in vastly more efficient ways than we Americans have.
So, with humanity’s intractable foolishness, we have adopted the social and economic model developed to the highest degree in the USA. We use corporate finance capitalism, which depends at its core on infinite and expanding markets, resources, energy and money in order to function. At the root of the system is lending at interest, and the use of debt as money, and the use of money as a medium of exchange and a store of value, and also as a commodity in and of itself. Such a system has to expand infinitely or it will begin to consume itself, and collapse.
Unfortunately, of these indispensable infinites, only money can be made infinite, and that only by making it abstract. The other factors remain finite. Once everyone who has the money to buy a refrigerator and a power source to plug it into has one, they’re out of the refrigerator market. Now we have to make inferior refrigerators so they burn out and consumers have to replace them. That sets off a self-consuming spiral too. The buyer has to find more money, the manufacturers have to use more resources, and everyone needs more energy. Making energy artificially cheap allows global labor arbitrage, to keep the cost of all these un-needed refrigerators within a range that people can actually accumulate enough money to pay.
Anybody can see that this will fail. We’re currently at the stage of fiddling with every possible abstract element in the equation, to make it appear that the overall system still works. It doesn’t, though, and this will become increasingly and unavoidably obvious to all. Those most attached tothe current system are those who have profited the most, and they will resist any modification no matter how obvious and necessary. The worst of all will be those who have never fully received the benefits they thought they had earned, and will destroy all efforts to bring in a more sensible and sustainable existence in their vain desperation to get what they feel they have paid for already.
Once fraud becomes the only viable industrial enterprise, the end comes up quickly.

Good observations and the poor man’s way to do it is to use Google Earth. I remember looking at the border between the Dominican Republic and Haiti a while back. It was a ‘world of difference’ but one doesn’t have to go so far up to see the contrasts in living arraignments and environmental destructions. Take a look at any American city like Houston which grew without any urban planning at all and compare it to those with the rudiments of a plan and you can see the differences right on the ground.
Yes, Haiti is all Black whereas the Dominican Republic has a semi-White mulatto ruling class that has been able to keep things from devolving into a complete disaster.
Christ Vlad, try reading up on some Haitian history before spewing your idiotic, racist vomit into the discussion.

Just finished today’s WSJ front page to back page; not one word about any of this. Matter of fact, one article states in 2014 performance of Dow will build on and exceed the great returns of 2013. They use the mid 1920s and late 90s as precedent.

As I wait and wait and wait for the page at clusterfuck nation to load I have to wonder if the new NSA abominations have something to do with: A)Increased traffic flow to Jims Blog. Or B) Something more sinister. I won’t be giving that more than a passing thought but the days of Asoka, Janos and crew may be indeed numbered.
It is not a great stretch of imagination from realizing that if the government can spend all day playing on line games to look for people building bombs in their basements they can certainly spend a good part of the day throwing fresh meat in front of dogs here to see what they will do. And my story of having the personal heat in my life turned up, my own private global warming, becomes a bit more credible. Going from monitoring on line gaming to monitoring politically oriented blogs is a no brainier. Perhaps new revelations will cancel out “Friday’s encouraging jobs report.” as certain ex-government employees join the end of the line and elbow their way to the front. If that happens I for one won’t be giving them any sympathy and you’d think I would as I’m looking for work myself. But I can’t find it in me to sympathies with them. Those who blunder onto government secrets can have unusually bad luck and I think they won’t be having the same bad luck as they look for work. Of course they might just be sent to the ‘eastern front’ Sgt. Schultz’s greatest fear in Hogans Heros. For him it was the Russian front. The modern equivalent I suppose is Kandahar Province.

Your guess is reasonable and I hope that’s what it is. A year ago Jim’s hit rate on a Monday ran between 12,000 and 20,000 viewers. But why all of a sudden? Anyhoo Jim will know when he reviews his traffic report. If all the hits come from a certain Caribbean Island in the middle of the Gulf of Mexico it won’t be folks suddenly becoming interested in WTF is going on. Jim will know if he is aware of what to look for.
It also could be his webmaster has been tweaking the system and made a tweak in the wrong direction. Anyway things are getting back to normal now.
The trouble with my exceptionally curious nature is I consider all possibilities and since I’ve actually peeked behind the curtain and traced I.P. addresses of visitors here and suffered as a result then well; I consider all possibilities. Entirely reasonable from my perspective.

We should not forget the role of Peak Oil in the current “recovery”.
Due to temporary gains from US shale oil production and reductions in EU oil consumption the price of gasoline in the US has dropped to
almost $3 per gallon. This puts more money into the 97% of Auto Addicted Americans for the moment to either help pay their bills or more likely shop some more. Thus the uptake in US GDP and some life back in the US economy. But as predicted by Peak Oil theorists already we see the impacts of even this small growth on oil prices very quickly. The price of WTI oil had dropped as low as $92 per barrel but is about $98 per barrel and heading back above $100 per barrel. Until the US stops its profligate waste of oil for endless Wars ironically to protect oil supply which have cost $8 Trillion since 1976
( see http://www.commondreams.org/view/2013/12/08-2 ) and of course Auto Addiction then as soon as there is any life in the economy it will bump against the ceiling of Peak Oil availability.
What is encouraging to me is that finally more and more progressives like Juan Cole who have tended to downplay Peak Oil and the role of Auto Addiction in Oil Addiction, are waking up.

I hope the Zeitgeist is changing fundamentally but media is run by corporate interest who are currently trying build up the temporary oil glut into permission to ship crude oil overseas to boost profits. From the linked article:

You are absolutely correct that timing isn’t “everything”. (Although I’m certain that the fraudulent, head-fake of tapering will be carefully timed to be ‘implemented’ over the dozing season of deep winter excesses of cabin-fever parties and Xmas through New Years concentration on how many gew-gaws it takes to achieve escape-velocity from consequences, rapidly coming due.)
What IS a large chunk of ‘determining the direction of the future’ is perspective leading to perception.
This is why the fraudsters, their hired minions and willful followers are really shoveling on the coal powering their engines of perception.
Without the lumpenprole (or ‘perceived majority’) meekly accepting lies fashioned of whole cloth, the whole swindle (and its’ attendant mouthpieces) comes to an abrupt and very messy end.
There’s no longer any need to wonder why we’re being aggressively and persistently lied to, everywhere and on every level.

Joe, next door, is my employment/unemployment barometer…who needs the BLS?
Joe is 50 years old and in his 4th year without a job. I wonder what he thinks when he hears the talking heads on CNBC speaking of 203,000 jobs added in November and the unemployment rate dropping to 7% even. Well, actually, Joe probably isn’t the CNBC type…more likely he’s a Judge Judy type.
With all the spare time on his hands you’d think he’d do something around the house. God knows I wouldn’t know where to begin. I would love to post photos for you to see before it all suddenly collapses like WTC 7.
You’d swear it was Detroit. Every several months Joe will appear outside and do some task for 20 or 30 minutes and then disappear for several more months. Whatever tool was involved in the task will be left in the place and the attitude where he perceived the job finished. And there the tool will sit, often for years.
One day in mid-summer I noticed a huge aluminum extension ladder leaned from the backyard to above the second story roofline. Hmm? A roof leak perhaps? Days went by, and then weeks. Still the ladder leaned against the house. Weeks became months. On Thanksgiving Day with family over I sarcastically broadcast a gentleman’s bet that the ladder would remain in its current position until the fall of 2016 when news of an impending hurricane would spur Joe to action.
As if by magic, two days later, the ladder was gone. I wonder if Joe has one of those dish devices where you can listen in on people’s conversations at a considerable distance.
Of the four or six possible major events that could hasten the collapse of industrial human society, a default by the U.S. government on a significant portion of its financial obligations and commitments initiated, in this case, by the Fed withdrawing its financial support is the event most worthy of attention. It would be the easiest, not the quickest, among the messiest, and as devastating as any. So, the Federal Reserve has my full attention. I wish that I had an escape pod idling on the ramp.

BLS is objective, reporting both ups and downs.
Your neighbor may not be objective at all.
Joe is 50 years old and in his 4th year without a job. Being unemployed for any significant length of time looks bad to employers. As bad as being 50+. Joe is a barometer who has lost all his mercury. From an employers point of view anyone who has been unemployed for a significant stretch of time has something wrong with them. It’s not right but that’s the way it is.
Only 1 in 10 long-term unemployed find work.

As the graph shows “Friday’s encouraging jobs report.” does not mean a thing and there has been no improvement in the job market since 2007 and no cooking of the books will change that.
I wonder if Joe would fix his house more if he had a job. House repairs are daunting when one’s ass is broke and can bring on a depressive funk in twenty minutes or less. House repair always cost money even when you do all the work yourself. With no job even small expenses can seem huge. But not knowing Joe I don’t know.
The actual work of society is accomplished by 10% of the population…….Joe and the rest are just so much flotsam……..
I assume that you include yourself in that flotsam?

I’m surprised Mandela and South Africa were not mentioned in this week’s CFN post. One can hardly argue it’s not relevant. South Africa is yet another sign of things to come. SA is a failing state with a dwindling to non-existent middle class and a ridiculously widening disparity between rich and poor. Crime is rampant and the elimination of Whites seems to be the agenda. The media are celebrating youth, dance, colour, being black and exuberant – as opposed to the quiet studiousness of middle-aged and elderly whites, the bearers of knowledge and understanding. Are these learned whites who are being killed in exuberant, paradisiacal outbreaks of violence simply the remnants of a civilisation that is being eradicated in the name of decolonisation? No government spokesman has ever condemned such killings; so we may assume that the present regime is completely indifferent to them, where such killings do not enjoy their tacit support.
The wealthy elite have no tribe but the tribe of wealth. Race is a secondary consideration as it relates to their own vested interests, but it is used as a tool to control. A wealthy White person has no allegiance to another White person who isn’t of their class/tribe, and so will sell other White people down the river when the time is right. The time is right and a river is running through it.
About 20 white people murdered a day in SA, including entire farm families wiped out all at once in the middle of the night. If anyone is curious, there was a post yesterday @ about 2:30, and then a gap of several hours before the next post. This is very unusual for a Monday.
It appeared to me that JHK’s website was installing “redirect cookies” on anyone’s browser who attempted to login to comment, or maybe even view his blog. That’s what happened to me, at any rate.
No conspiracy, K-dog, that I can see. Probably just a common virus. Happens all the time. And now the problem is fixed.

For instance, do official inflation numbers make any sense to you? They don’t make any sense to me. Like clockwork they publish numbers year after year that look impossibly consistent. At least to my eyes.
Look at the turmoil in the economy in the past 20 years. Look at the offshoring and the importation of huge quantities of goods from slave wage regimes.There should have been a huge drop in the cost of living. Did you see it? I sure didn’t.
Plus, the cost of college education is through the roof as is the cost of medical care. So is the cost of oil.
We’re supposed to believe that the net effect of all this mayhem is an inflation rate of around 1 to 3 percent year after year. How is this remotely possible?
The Fed is an organization that utterly failed to to foresee or to put out financial conflagrations in the 2000’s before they reached firestorm proportions.
But we’re to believe that the Fed has such in-depth knowledge of the economy and such an exquisitely sure touch on the money supply that it can fine tune inflation. How likely is this?
Maybe official inflation numbers are a load of crap.
The Fed has the stink of an extraordinarily reckless institution with no real idea of what it’s doing, making it all up as it goes along, an organization ostensibly created for the purpose of financial stability, given its legality and power by the imprimatur of law-making bodies but in actuality an aider and abettor to the robbery of livelihoods and income and wealth.
Given the massive power of the forces arrayed against it, coming mostly from the inside from its C-suite and Wall Street elites, there’s only direction for the US to go and that’s down, down, down. There couldn’t be a more clearly marked path if it had been cut from granite.
The US will be destroyed from within. The gangsters in the Kremlin and Beijing and Riyadh, with their own agendas and ambitions, but without sufficient power to supplant America, must be rubbing their eyes in disbelief.
I apologize if this is a further distraction from the enemies, real or imagined. But one cannot argue it’s not relevant. What’s happened to, and is continuing to happen in, South Africa is a sign of things to come, especially considering Peak Everything. In answer to the question why more Whites haven’t left South Africa, some cannot afford to, and for those who can manage to scrounge enough together to get themselves and their families out, the process of legally immigrating to another country is a difficult one unless they’re willing to risk crossing the Rio Grande with a group of Mexicans in the dead of night illegally.

Among the 18-34 age group, 56 percent of whites, 53 percent of Indians and 43 percent of those of mixed race want to leave the country. Among blacks the number is only at 33 percent which still means that a third would like to leave.

Here in Australia, the economy seems to be doing well generally. The Australian people seem to trust the government and the system here works.
Perhaps one ominous sign, however, is that the Aussie dollar is outrageously high relative to other currencies. It seems that foreigners (particularly Asians) are dumping US dollars to snap up overpriced Aussie real estate. Everything is Australia is outrageously expensive if priced in US dollars. I’ve been looking a property, but I can’t afford anything unless I want to live out in remote “Woop Woop”.

I don’t think the times article represents The Prince very well. Machiavelli was incredibly wise and understood the human condition exceptionally well. Above all he was a realist; for example.

His incredible pragmatism is often misunderstood as evil but what he was really about was just rule and a peaceful state that endures. He knew well the horrors of war, conflict, and misery and he did not want any of that shit. He really wanted a peaceful and prosperous state.
Man can do better. Nay, he must. Would you throw you own father out of his own home? No, right? But some do after the parent gives the home to a child for tax or medicare purposes. Likewise with this situation. It is not inevitable or somehow beyond or outside of ordinary morality.

I was listening to Mike Savage last night. This theory of an impending genocide against the White population, now that Mandela is out of the picture, keeps coming up. Is it just paranoia? Is there anything to it? One thing that was mentioned, and if it true it is chilling, is that the President Himself, at political rallies, and with Bono by his side, is fond of leading the crowd in songs with lyrics like, “One Boer, One Bullet’, and “Bring me my machine gun”.

About Men’s Wearhouse, it’s yet another example of anti-competitive forces winning the day. Not as it relates to Zimmer, but the merger/acquisition of Jos. A. Bank. Such an arrangement is good for no one but the investment houses and a few shareholders. With the arrangement, the competition’s over. Zimmer agrees with the possible merger/acquisition, so he’s anti-competitive. I don’t respect that, so I don’t feel for him all that much. I think he’ll be alright. This will give him time to nurture and grow his classic car collection.
Despite the rationalizing rhetoric offered to justify mergers/acquisitions, the effect is anti-competitive. Always. This is what happens with unregulated capitalism. It devours itself. Without the incentive to improve (i.e. competition), financial forces eventually suck the host dry and leave nothing but the bones. Mergers/acquisitions should be a very rare occurrence, but instead they rule the day. They help hide the fact that the merging companies can no longer generate organic growth of profit and revenue, and they generate huge transaction fees for the investment firms who arrange the merger/acquisition.
Q identifies with the investment houses and its glorious morality of whatever happens is what is supposed to happen. Zimmer does protest the treatment he received but perhaps he believes he has to accept the “morality” of Capitalism or be seen as a traitor.
The whole thing is the Law of Jungle or the Law of the Fish – big eats the little. It’s depressing that people think this is the best human beings can do. People always seek some kind of gimmick or system to avoid the hard truth and work of a having to do what’s right.

Also, they had those great catalogues, thick as a phone book. The first time I saw an escalator was at that Sears store back in the day.
There’s a Sears in my town. Every time I go in, the store’s nearly empty, the staff standing around talking to each other. It won’t be long.
I grew up in a city with an A&P. Remember them? Woolworth’s, Kresge’s and others gone. Also Filene’s, Jordan Marsh and RH Stearns, once very large Boston department stores. And my neighborhood drug store that had a soda counter, with two ice cream cones for 7 cents. My iPad doesn’t even have a cent key. God, I sound like my father, who used to lament about how much fun he had in his youth.

Q, I worked at Kroger in Dallas, Tx. during HS. Started at $3.35 and ended at $5.89. I thought I was a big shot making the latter figure, mostly because the majority of my friends didn’t work and I always had spending money than them. This Kroger was in a deteriorating part of Dallas and consequently it was robbed several times during my tenure. I started as a bag boy and ended as a checker, and that was back in the day when they still had registers that required you to key everything and remember produce codes. There were no scanners like they have now and no read out to tell you how much change to return to the customer. Checkers have it easy these days. They don’t even have to think. The computer does it all for them. Hell, there’s one (a checker) at my local grocery store who gets to sit on her ass as she checks you out. So, she doesn’t even have to stand let alone remember produce codes or key in prices from labels on the product. Instead of carpal tunnel, checkers these day get swiper elbow. I’m guessing she gets to do this because she’s overweight. Back when I was working at Kroger, they’d tell you to take a hike if you requested to sit while you were checking.
Occasionally, management would sucker me into working the night shift which was from 12 midnight until 8am. Getting time and a half made it enticing. So, I did it every now and then, but man was it tough to stay awake, and man was I nervous being there all alone waiting for a criminal to come in and blow me away in a robbery. I would go through scenarios in my head on how I would react to various situations should they arise during my eight hour graveyard shift. Thankfully, I never had to implement any of my many strategies, as if they would have worked as planned. The instruction was to front the shelves, meaning pull the product forward and face it properly, between checking anyone out. Well, I would get maybe three customers during the entire eight hours, so I was fronting shelves most of the time, but not really. I learned the fine art of falling asleep standing up. I couldn’t help it. It just happened. Time and a half for being potential target practice for a drive-by robbery and sleeping on your feet. Not bad. Problem was, once you “volunteered,” they were always hitting you up to do it again and again, so I just wouldn’t answer the phone when they called. I had a way of knowing it was Kroger that was calling. Call it a sixth sense.
Kroger’s still doing fine, but who knows for how long. The grocery business is tough. As you know, the margins are slim but the volume is huge, or it better be huge. There’s not a lot of room for sloppy operations and if you don’t control shrinkage (not the winter variety that reduces a penis to something unrecognizable from its former glory), it will eliminate those thin margins in a heartbeat.

I’d be interested in your comments about this analysis of Spielberg’s Lincoln. Yes, I know it’s not a coveted resource, this publication, but it popped up in a Google search and some of what is said is not without merit. I cannot get myself to watch this movie. I figured it was a whitewash of history and pure propaganda, so I flip right past it on the channel guide every time and it’s always there. Most other movies come and go from the channel listing rather quickly, but not Lincoln. I wonder why?

Last week, in regard to the canonization of Mandela, I said: “It has taken me a lifetime to realize no one deserves to be idolized.” Not Washington, Lincoln, Jesus, Muhammed, Gandhi, Churchill, Mao or Hitler.
Of all our living US presidents only Bush the Elder was fortunate enough to have a plausible excuse (age) to avoid the show. The rest, including most of the worlds other leaders were trapped by political correctness whether they liked it or not. Such is the life of politicians.
I was reminded of this truth (about idolizing and canonization) while reading a book titled In Xanadu. Here are a few lines from it concerning St Blaise:

I usually agree with you K-Dog, especially on all things thermodynamic, but here I’m not so sure. Let’s say 10 kWh or solar energy hit the collecting plate. If there is a 30 percent conversion rate, that means 3 kWh is captured as usable energy. The other 7 kWh are either reflected or lost as waste heat. We would call this 30% efficient in chem Eng. However, as with chem Eng processes, waste heat can be recovered. Depending on how they chose to calculate it (it isn’t clear whether they meant 50% of the original incident solar energy or 50% of the waste), it could be true that 80% is captured to do useful work.
More likely, they mean 50% recovery of waste, which would yield 30% + .5*70% = 65%. It’s very difficult to design a process that is greater than 70% efficient, so I bet that’s what it is. Whether they could actually use all that waste heat recovered is a different story, and, as you say EROEI is a different story, as well.
Beware the semantics. The heat was identified as waste.
Waste is waste and in an article such as this many semantic tricks are common. I also saw the 65% you did and realized that 50% conversion of heat to energy in a situation like this was probably a false claim. Had I seen a reasonable heat energy conversion efficiency there I would have assumed the heat was actually being captured and being converted to energy. But an efficiency of 50% heat conversion in the desert would be difficult to achieve with devices this small even without taking into consideration the maximum conversion possibilities of the Carnot Cycle. I smell a rat.
Another question is where is the energy being used to cool the solar cells being accounted for and if the cells are being cooled then all the heat is waste. Another reason to disregard the extra 35%.

I’d actually like to see something like this succeed and that we would have the wisdom not to just leverage the energy into just another bubble ending in another crisis downstream.

I was just outside and looked over into neighbor Joe’s property and saw that the big aluminum extension ladder that had been leaning for months against his house was dropped diagonally across the backyard.

Any ‘false claims’ in a system like this will easily be outed under scrutiny by participating engineers.

even the old mainframes still have errors popping up. complexity at some point overwhelms all systems… i’m sure there’s a proof of that somewhere. (theory of incompleteness? no system contains all possible true statements, and, when sufficiently large, no system is w/o falsity.)
when i was still working, i was on a team for a medium size financial outfit making legacy cobol code y2k compliant. we found zillions of math errors in it, but it was all sacrosanct, had been sec certified for decades. a child could’ve done better arithmetic. still, $60b assets rested firmly upon its accuracy. i believe the hardware was good old ibm iron.

The heat was waste heat that is to be allegedly re-purposed but only vague claims were made as to how it would be used and the ‘50%’ recovery is pulled out of thin air. That article had the scientific rigour of a marketing brochure but that’s good enough for you. Not good enough for me. I deal with facts.
And who would bother criticising an article like this. The article has an obscure audience and brings nothing really new to the table. Systems like this have been under development for years. I prefer the Stirling Engine with parabolic mirror version myself.

debt is alarming when you’re in it and can’t pay it back: human beings are entitled to freak on such occasions. but giant banks and sovereign nations are not people: they have no emotions. all these $trillions which drive jhk to such apoplexy are merely pieces on a chessboard. nations rise, nations fall, real people end up starving or dying of thirst, but there is no drama in the numbers. remember, we have no creditors on mars: the debt of world is a zero sum.
as for financial logic, econ 101 tells us that inflation favors the debtor, not the creditor. if anybody has reason to stay awake at night, it’s the chinese, who would be none too happy to be paid back in debased greenbacks. bernanke’s printing press may be a tool of the devil, but it’s on the side of debtors like us, and homeowners like us, too, because the quickest way to revive real estate is to make the mortgage debt hangover go away. as for the labor market from hell, who among us is so secure as not to want a little more stimulus?

It would be a great thing to have the comments section truncated at about 50 posts eliminating redundancy and forcing attention on the topic at hand. Links should also be limited to in text footnotes so they don’t interrupt the flow and distract from this webpage. The comments section is for intellectual discussion, not to promote another blog; therefore, we shouldn’t have to visit someone’s blog in order to get their reaction.

i had this weird sentimental moment at starbucks this morning… i’m getting my coffee, and the clerk says there’s no charge. and i’m mystified, but she says that some guy came in and paid for 26 coffees. so i’m mixing in milk thinking, what the hell, why would anyone buy 26 coffees? and of course i realize it’s sandy hook day. which made me briefly thankful in an almost religious way, just thinking about how people are all trying their best, within reason.

Crocodiles are potentially dangerous. Never take unnecessary risks in crocodile habitat. You are responsible for your own safety, so please follow these guidelines and be croc wise in croc country.
Obey crocodile warning signs – they are there for your safety and protection.
Never swim in water where crocodiles may live even if there is no warning sign present.
Swimming or standing in water above knee-height near a crocodile warning sign or where estuarine crocodiles are frequently seen, is illegal in protected areas (you can still enter the water if you have a reasonable excuse, e.g. launching a boat).
When fishing, always stand a few metres back from the water’s edge and never stand on logs or branches overhanging the water.
Never clean fish or discard fish scraps near the water’s edge, around campsites or at boat ramps.
Stay well back from any crocodile slide marks. Crocodiles may be close by and may approach people and boats.
Boats and vehicles must never be brought within 10m of an estuarine crocodile in the wild – it is illegal unless part of a commercial crocodile viewing tour, or there is a reasonable excuse, e.g. where a creek is less than 10m wide.
Never dangle your arms or legs over the side of a boat. If you fall out of a boat, get out of the water as quickly as possible.
Never provoke, harass or interfere with crocodiles, even small ones.
Never feed crocodiles – it is illegal and dangerous.
Camp at least 2m above the high water mark and at least 50m from the water’s edge. Avoid places where native animals and domestic stock drink.
Never leave food scraps, fish frames or bait at your campsite. Always check that previous campers have not left these behind.
Never prepare food, wash dishes or pursue any other activities near the water’s edge or adjacent sloping banks.

Well, first of all, I’m probably better positioned than most on here to survive “what may be coming,” unless what’s coming is a large meteor strike on the N. Georgia mountains, that is.
And – if what’s coming is a swirling vortex of hate that destroys US society, then I’m not sure I’d WANT to survive it.
And you need to consider that “what may be coming” may not hew to your standards of proper societal unrest. It may just be, for example, 10 more decades of relatively peaceful decline. Coupled, of course, with massive population growth due to immigration – since immigration is unopposable because such opposition is evidence of hate filled racism. (There’s a Catch-22 in there, for anyone who wants to extract it for discussion.)
10 more decades of decline – punctuated, of course, with JHK’s weekly missives and predicted periodic economic catastrophes.

today i went to my local bookstore to buy The Geography of Nowhere; they did not have it but would be happy to order it for me; i was polite enough not to say, and why would i want you to do that, i’ll get it for half your price off amazon and it will be here the day after tomorrow. instead i bought Too Much Magic, which i had mostly read when it came out, standing around in the aisles, like a teenager reading porno off the rack because he’s too shy to pay for it.

I rarely BUY a book. I’m too cheap. I get them from the local library. If they don’t have it they can usually order it in from another library in their network. It usually arrives within a week. Such is the case with the book (In Xanadu) I am currently reading. It came from a library in Nutely, NJ.
If nobody has it I hassle my local library to acquire it.

@pro, i like to think to think that i’m open to suggestion. as a born-again atheist (from the cancer experience… a long story) i do try to let believers say their peace. even racists and i find some amount of common ground… my odd concordance with vlad remains valuable to me.
i’m not sure what it was, but my guess it was a north-south thing, perhaps re the civil war. lately i’ve come to see the split between new england and the former slave-holding states as far more ancient than this new world experiment… i think it goes back to ireland vs england, scotland vs reality, you know, our distant forebears. as wm faulkner wrote, blood will cry out.
i’ve had a close email buddy who is born and bred mississippi, although now he’s a fancypants lawyer in a big city. trivia: he played high school ball with walter peyton. (or was it earl cambell? some guy who is arguably the greatest ever, who came out of miss, that would be your guy.)
anyhow, we go round and round about the south vs north. he too is a faulkner fan. when i was a boy i read everything he wrote, if you call that reading, a ten year old moving his eyes back and forth over the sound and the fury etc. perhaps this is where my yankee attitude comes from: i bought faulkner’s idea that the south is cursed.

Alligator is pretty good, I’ve eaten a good bit of it. It tastes like slightly greasy, and slightly muddy tasting, white meat chicken.
South of here – where it’s warm enough that the alligators don’t die over the winter – some of the chicken and turkey farmers raise ‘gators. Disposal of dead poultry from a big house, which can raise 50,000+ birds, gets to be a big issue. Alligators love dead chickens. Problem solved – with benefits.
Anyway, I have no idea how crocodile tastes. But any parasites will be killed if the cook gets the meat hot enough.
One of my uncles came home from WWII and raised a bit of a snit with my grandmother over her (hand-made, personal farm-raised, healthy and delicious) pork sausage. He told her she wasn’t cooking it well done enough. Fear of undercooked pork was something he’d evidently picked up in the Army Air Corps. “Well done, Mama. Pork’s got to be cooked WELL DONE!”
It was offensive enough to her that my own mom was still talking about it to me – over 40 years later.
