The golden Colossus of Trump looms over the national scene this summer like one of Jeff Koons’s giant, shiny, balloon-puppy sculptures — a monumental expression of semiotic vacancy. At the apogee of Trumpdom, everything’s coming up covfefe. The stock market is 5000 points ahead since 1/20/17. Little Rocket Man is America’s bitch. We’re showing those gibbering Asian hordes and European café layabouts a thing or two about fair trade. Electric cars are almost here to save the day. And soon, American youth will be time-warping around the solar system in the new US Space Corps!
Enjoy it while you can. Events are converging ominously this summer in the direction of unwinding expectations and serial train wrecks of finance and politics. Mr. Trump has made hubris simple by bragging on the supposed triumphs of “his” economy. When it blows up, he’ll own that, too, and the second half of 2018 liable to be a debris-field of shattered national economies, zombie corporations, and floundering institutions.
A new supreme court justice will be the very apex of Trump triumphalism, but whoever the pick is will goad the Democratic “progressives” to new depths of antagonism, so expect more street-fighting by the black-masked Antifa forces during the senate confirmation debate. Some sort of martial law will be invoked by a governor, or perhaps even the president himself. Initially that would amount to little more than curfews, but they’ll be ignored, and then the fun will really begin. Think: national guard troops and angry clashes. The tone will be low, and sinking fast.
If Antifa acts up the way I anticipate, it will drag the Democratic Party closer to extinction. The party celebrated a week ago over the rise of Evita Peron wannabe, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. Her youth and glamour intersect with her socialism, a doctrine that caused more human deaths in the 20th century than all the religious wars of the previous centuries. What’s not to like about it?
The blowup of the bond and stock markets later this year will put to a gloomy rest the ludicrous notion that America has been enjoying a great economic boom. It’s actually been an engineered hallucination, thanks to the global monetary authorities applying the magic of limitless credit to a bad habit of credulous speculation. The central banks have launched a program of so-called “quantitative tightening (QT)” — an idiotic phrase meant to counterpoise the equally fatuous “quantitative easing (QE),” PhD economist-speak for grotesque interference in the bond markets — that will choke down the credit supply at exactly the moment that governments and giant corporations need new loans to pay the interest on old loans. The trajectory there is obvious.
The big question, of course — hardly ever asked in the public arena — is what that will do to currencies, i.e., money. It can really only go two ways: either make money very scarce, in which case a lot of people and enterprises go broke, or, if the monetary authorities respond to the predicament by enabling a return to bottomless credit issuance, the money will become worthless — they’ll be plenty of it, but it won’t buy much. Such a turn of events will make an already-unhinged nation fly apart.
Lurking in the background of all this are several other consequential movements, trends, and troubles. One is the fate of the European Union. The quarrel over migrants from the Middle East and Africa will not be resolved happily. Germany and France will not succeed in bullying countries like Austria, Hungary, and Poland into absorbing more of these strangers. The more the EU pushes, the more they will feed nationalist sentiment in these places. And of course all the Big Dawgs of the EU are already stuck with millions of newcomers they foolishly invited the past several years, and all the problems they brought with them.
Another plot-line deep in this summer’s story is the movement of oil markets. Recently, the trend has been for rapidly rising oil prices. As they approach the “magic” $75-a-barrel mark, you can be sure they will squash economic activity — which is already being hammered by the uncertainty unleashed by trade-and-tariff shenanigans. If the oil price heads back over $100/barrel you can just forget about maintaining the business status quo — and even at that price the shale oil companies won’t make a red cent. Of course, they’ll also have a tough time getting new loans, which is the only thing that kept their operations going for the past ten years.
Oh, yes, there is also that Hieronymus Bosch Garden of Earthly Delights known as the Mueller Investigation, with its dreary outposts in the executive suite of the FBI, and all the tangled mysteries entailed there. Mr. Mueller will come up with someone to indict on something, even if it’s ninety-seven ham sandwiches. I suspect Mr. Trump will manage to dump Attorney General Jeff Sessions and Deputy AG Rod Rosenstein. And then the pardons will fly, like so many winged demons flapping from the mouth of Hades. Constitutional crisis may be too mild a word for what ensues.
By holiday time in early winter, much will clarified about the actual direction of the country. By then, the “Walk Away” movement may even include the obdurate shills at CNN and The New York Times, and the Intellectual-Yet-Idiots on the college campuses. And the Golden Golem of Greatness will lie upended in the swamp that he just didn’t try hard enough to drain.

I think you deserve an honorary doctorate in common sense economics with this little gem:

Sometimes things really are that simple, especially where academics – whose entire profession revolves around making simple things appear to be complex – are involved.
Will the final meltdown come this year? Can’t be sure about that, and perhaps that’s the wrong question anyway. The meltdown is occurring right before our eyes as we speak, just not in the time frames where we can easily apprehend as it unfolds.
Anyway, good work as always. Nice to see that someone in this great land of delusion is still paying attention.

I did some surfing on the web and it’s not true.
The reasonable number for communist deaths is 60 million overall. If you think it is 100 million you really should do something about that itch but do some surfing yourself before you bother me about it. You will see where I got the figure if you can follow my links.

Anyone who hasn’t seen what went on in Portland, between Antifa & defenders of the First Amendment, needs to check it out. This may well be the first skirmish in the coming Civil War 2.0. A one-man wrecking crew almost single-handedly handled Antifa, and these same defenders of the First Amendment can be expected to push back against Antifa violence, wherever they show up. Won’t be pretty – for Antifa anyway.
Proud Boys remind me of Curtis Sliwa and the Guardian Angels, same concept – when “authorities” refuse to do their job, someone will step up and protect Constitutional Rights.

No, they have deaths to the credit in Europe. And they have posted pictures of themselves holding automatic rifles recently around America. They are all in. It will happen if Trump doesn’t move against them.
Yes, they tend towards the ectomorphic and even physically flawed. They can’t bang toe to toe against normal White Men and Fascists. So yes, they run. But they will come back better prepared if the Police don’t step in.
They are not holding automatic rifles. I have seen the pics. They are holding semi-auto firearms. The pics are not of a high qulaity and I would bet many of them are .22 lr or airsoft.
If one is truly serious about guns for fighting, they would get a medium quality AR-15, put a 300 AAC upper with a 16″ barrel on, a good set of iron sights or a holographic reflex sight (I have both), and a USGI style sling with QD mounts and a binary trigger. Adding additional crap to the carbine is not a good idea because it is already too heavy . I would also take the 20 round magazines over the 30 rounders.
With this gun you get a good all around carbine for up close ranges all the way to 300 yards. Swapping from heavy subsonic ammo to the faster stuff is as simple as a magazine swap. The 300 AAC in the sun sonic 220 grain variety will defeat lvl 2 body armor.
The 150 grain supersonic ammo will have more energy and momentum than a 5.56×45 at 100 yards.
The best part about it is the ease of making the ammo from spent 5.56 cases and .308″ bullets.
Having the gun is just step one. You also must know how to use it. This means proper form, no flinch, and proper trigger control.
I don’t see any ANTIFA guys having the commitment to go through all this trouble.

I think we’ve heard these predictions once or twice before…

I know that you can’t have perpetual economic growth on a finite planet, that renewable energy is not coming online fast enough for a smooth transition out of fossil fuels, and that presently fertile regions will become deserts; but it would be arrogant to think that large complex high-tech society cannot adapt to these conditions, just because I can’t personally imagine how it can adapt.
Haven’t followed Guy in a while. Checking in on his site this morning, it appears that whatever else he might be about these days, he’s mostly become a marketing phenomenon. A “brand” if you will. Looks like he’s still on about climate change in earnest, though.

Thank you, great post. I was thinking as I read today, “How many times has JHK made this prediction?” I always thought, maybe eventually one year he’ll be right, but quite possibly not.
He may predict in the short term. The long term trends he has predicted since 2005 are all happening. In the Long Emergency, JHK predicted the oil crises happening in the last half of the century. His predictions have been moved out by fracking but the concept of Peak Oil is still alive and well. Ten years ago, oil was $20 a barrel, it is constantly going up, the cause increased demand with reluctant supply. As predicted.
Tell you what, a real test is coming up quickly, Trump has requested more output to offset Iranian sanctions. Let us see if SA et al can produce more supply. How close is OPEC to Peak Oil? It will be a game changer when it occurs.
I agree. The short term predictions by doomers across the board have been faulty. However, the longer term picture definitely shows decline underway. The lies and spin have grown to cover some of the more obvious signs. For example, we may see market movement or headlines because of a government stats report.. But does anyone really even believe these BS stats anymore? It’s the whole emperor’s clothes phenomenon, with everyone bullshitting each other.
It sure seems like of this house of cards is staying up on pure perception alone. Or, waiting for the other guy to flinch, like an timely gunfight, and people are getting a bit jittery. My own bird in the coal mine this year is hurricane season. Especially if the markets have a rough go of it the fall. That setup could get the iinsurance companies in a tight spot.
It took Rome several hundred years to politically collapse through corruption causes worse than ours. The end result of the collapse was 800 years of localized feudal society. Forecasters point the direction and our direction is not positive, that is for sure. The Doomers want things to happen right away, this year, now! The inertia of civilization does not work that way. Watch the Long term trends, where are things trending. Nationalism and localization, think California are occurring. Economic conditions, long term, are worsening as indicated by the increasing level of national and global debt. Debt is deteriorating the future. My grandson will face a very different world than we do, but in fifty years, not this Christmas. Civilizations decline gradually, not precipitously. Unless of course, a shock treatment, such as a pandemic hits and blows everyone out of the water.

Times change JohnAZ, and with the advancement of technology, events happen at a much more rapid pace. Computer trading is done nowadays in nanoseconds. Where it took Rome a few centuries to collapse, it will be accomplished in a much shorter time period.

Your complaint is in the timeline, not the message.
The timeline is indeed my complaint. There is no doubt this is all going to end, but it won’t be this month, this year or this decade, no matter how often Mr. Kunstler (and others) predict it.
This time in American history is just plain fun to watch. I pumped fuel into my two vehicles and exceeded a hundred bucks. Did not bother me in the least. Now the tattooed gal over at the next pump was putting in just 3 gallons or so. Her collapse is a daily affair. I doubt she votes. Collapse is in the experience of the individual.
Agreed RB, but don’t overlook the fact that her collapse (and the much larger majority of the demographic like her) is your collapse. Just saying.

Good article, but a few nit-picks. It might be a mistake to confuse Socialism with events done in the name of Socialism. It’s like confusing Freedom with what is done by the US in the name of Freedom. If readers accept the US is the World’s leading depraved terrorist operating behind the skirts of jingos, then okay and a maybe. It’s kind of like when foks describe the lots of slaves as better than what they would have had in Africa…… I don’t realy know, though, We might have to ask the Vietnamese about their 1 million + dead in the name of Freedom, or the Iraqis, Libyans, Afghanis……. Maybe Chile, El Salvador. And of course Hitler was a socialist…..yeah right.

Your admonishments remind me of my Muslim colleague who desperately argues that radical Islamic terrorism has nothing to do with Islam or the Koran. I
The vast majority of the US population has no clue about the bigger picture regarding resource depletion or finance. When the new reality becomes fully apparent most will remain clueless. Things that were considered highly valuable like 3000 sq ft houses built of materials not designed to last more than 20 years, cars that require a finite miracle resource to operate, electronic screens of various sizes, etc. Take advantage of their foolishness to buy things of enduring value while they are cheap. Metals are on sale right now. A good cast iron wood stove. A stainless steel water tank. Nickel iron batteries. Manual hand tools. Things that will work for a long time but might not always be available. Things that give one the ability to make other useful things.
You are right. Think oil depletion and its effect on plastics. Metals are cheap because they are available. Sixty years ago, everything was metal, Fiberglas was just being developed. What happens when plastics become scarce? Maybe that is why Trump is trying to encourage the regrowth of new sources of steel and aluminum in this country.
Oh yeah, maybe we can harvest the oceans for plastic!
There will be a lot less new metal stuff for sale as fossil fuels deplete. There is a ton of embodied energy in metals, but especially aluminum and stainless.

I think Jim is confusing socialism with communism. Canada, Denmark, Finland, the Netherlands, Sweden, Norway and Ireland all have aspects of socialism, while still having a capitalist economic system. British Columbia’s New Democratic Party government, which is currently ruling in cooperation with the Green Party, is considered by many to be a socialist party. I don’t see millions of people dying in any of those places because of socialist policies. In fact, on average Canadians live about 4 years longer than Americans do, likely due to our socialist health care system.
If not confused with communism, then probably with national socialism.
Of course the problem with national socialism wasn’t the socialism part, but rather the nationalism. Trump’s national capitalism, or perhaps national financialism/bankism is more accurate since not a lot of actual working capital is involved, is what should be feared rather than the social democrats like Sanders and Ocasio-Cortez.
And it’s not so much the capitalism/financialism/bankism that’s the big problem with Trump, but rather the nationalism that weaponizes the economics part of it.

That is an interesting view. A major problem with health statistics in the USA is the skewing of numbers due to various races and ethnic groups. Blacks tend to be very unhealthy and that alone messes with the summaries. I think were the US to adapt a national health system that it would soon collapse under the weight of lawsuits given that lawyers rule the roost here. I imagine that the countries you listed do not have the problem we do with far too many trial lawyers. Lastly, there is no way to have the crazy sized military we have plus a national health system. In Finland’s case, the salient fact isn’t dead bodies so much as a lack of new ones. Finland’s population has essentially remained static since its inception. Compare this to Venezeula, which has roughly doubled its population every twenty years. It’s a lot easier to plan for a static and predictable populace, and especially when you don’t have millions of gimmigrants to contend with.
It’s also worth noting that Finland’s universal basic income experiment is a failure. Turns out when you rob Peter to pay Paul, with no strings whatsoever, Paul is happy and Peter is not. Both end up with less incentive to work. Finland couldn’t figure this out a priori; they had to actually waste taxpayer money to see what would happen. Finland’s problem remains how to get people to work when it’s so much easier to live off the work of others.

True. And the results of the study have not been released. But the fact that Finland denied a request from its own social benefits agency, KELA, to extend or expand the program speaks volumes. They’re the only European nation to have tried this experiment, and they’re ending it. No other nation is even considering it. So it seems that socialism in Europe has its limits, after all.

Yep I confused % GDP with % of budget. My point was that social programs, such as Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid and welfare programs are the biggest portions of the budget, something like 80%. The vast overewhelming majority of the budget is social spending—but apparently not enough for Democratic socialists. To get more social spending, they’ll have to do what they always do: raise taxes.
Just out of curiosity, at what point would you consider a tax rate to essentially be slavery? Finland’s personal income tax rate is around 50%. Would you have any problem with paying 99%? And let’s assume it all goes to social welfare.
Back to science and guys like Al Bartlett for me on this subject of limits to carrying capacity and all. If bacteria in a petrie dish double in mass every day, at one day before destruction, it still looks pretty good in that little dish. With humans, doubling what, every 12 years or so now (don’t quote me), what happens is less resources per capita, a general decrease in standard of living for those not in the upper ranks. We’ve had a general decline in standard of living for some time in the U.S. by many measures, with certainly some increases just due to technological advances. But nature bats last, and the game will go on, until it doesn’t (giant meteor, etc., as some bumper stickers had hoped for in the 2016 election).
Many people have decided that breeding isn’t for them, but still the population increase persists. The majority of populations in the world procreate, it’s too good of an evolutionary force. One thing that suffers is nature, another is standard of living (for the masses). Ironically, many nowadays have little need for nature and could be happy in some measure as long as there’s good wifi. Interesting times.

Non-aryans were banned from the German armed forces starting July 1935. Furthermore, the attempts to delegitimize national borders we see today & subsequent settling of incompatible populations within the same territories, could never be allowed to reach its final culminating stage — complete assimilation of those populations with one another. This would simply be creating the original problem anew, that is, the formation of new national identities. So there would have to be a continual reshuffling & mass relocation of populations. We saw this very thing put into practice on a more limited scale in the former Soviet Union. But in the imagined scenario of a one-world government, this forced movement of populations would proceed on a vastly greater stage. In summary, a one-world government would be a tyranny unlike anything ever seen before in the history of Man.

When Krushchev made the administrative change related to Crimea in the 1950’s, no one expected the future breakup of the Soviet Union.

So the CIPS system of international payments has been set up in China as an alternative to the SWIFT system that is controlled by the Federal Reserve Bank. More and more countries are now agreeing to use their own currencies for trade payments (especially oil and gas), instead of being forced to use the US dollar.
The bottom line is that the US Empire is crumbling, largely because it misused its sanctioning power to maintain hegemony over the other nations and to pressure the nations to submit to the masters of the beast system of modern Babylon.

Did you conveniently forget that Germany took over Czechoslovakia and invaded Poland before the UK and France declared war against Nazi Germany in September 1939? Had Germany stopped after Poland, my guess is that neither France nor the UK would have attacked Germany in 1940 and most Americans had no interest in going to war at that time. Yes, I agree. However there are major gradients in political theory that allow this is in practical means that are not mutually exclusive to either extremes. For example, I believe in the territorial sovereignty of the US. This sovereignty must be maintained by force. However, this does not make me a totalitarian. I also believe in the need for police forces. This also does not make me a totalitarian. I’m not a totalitarian because I believe in a more minarchist or limited form of federal government that ought to not have uncontrolled power of individual economic or private lives . I also believe in the long tradition of liberty thinking individuals such as John Locke in his Treatises of Government, for one example. Or many of the revolutionary writers.

Janet, I would not pretend to have data at hand to verify or deny the profitability of ExxonMobil’s shale operations, but I do have some working experience with the oil and gas business and “profit” is highly dependent on depreciation and depletion schedules.
It is likely that a good many years will pass yet before we know if rational schedules are being applied. I am familiar with cases where very reputable organizations applied very unrealistic schedules in order to facilitate sale of certain “assets”. When they were ultimately sued over the matter, they lost in court and lost considerable “good will” in the business world.
I myself have committed the error of trying to communicate with the chronically stupid, much to my own frustration. What they cannot comprehend is that many business ventures, such as the fracking debacle are not necessarily actual attempts at establishing functioning and profitable business ventures as much as they are set up to establish cash flows. Cash flows that can be tapped into for profit for those that “invest”, usually with other people’s money to pay profits as long as the boom is alive, and to stick the losers with the losses once the venture craps out in the end.

As far as I can understand it all, America and its economy, its economics and its debt and potential “collapse” is all held “together” by what appears to be unending, limitless credit. As those who labor to create value continue to make payments on their debts, those who hold the debts sit back and allow the system to go on. Once payments stop coming in, debt holders have the option to do nothing, sell the bad debts or take possession of the assets secured to back the debts. Many of those who hold the debts have so much income and assets already that they can easily ignore non-payments by the debtors, and as long as this is acceptable to the debt owners, nothing needs to change or collapse. The laborers simply learn to do less, eat less, entertain less, on and on as their own personal economics degrade. Heck, this degradation can go on for decades with a little patience by the owners of the debts, don’t you know?
Only an interruption in the supply chain could cause a severe reaction so my bet is on continued degradation ad infinitum. There are a number of very interesting social engineering programs underway that I have been made aware of recently that may very well allow for this all to go on and on for a lot longer than any of us could imagine. And Trump according to Constitution controls the executive power and he is supported by the vast majority of the American people, but nevertheless he was powerless in the first year of his term before Bastinda and her flying monkeys, despite the fact that she is lying when she says that majority voted for her.

The theory, as far as it goes, is that attractive people, who are used to things and people falling at their feet (poetic license here, but you catch the drift) have a ‘blind spot’ that makes them less likely to understand what life is like for the less privileged generally, hence are less likely to support welfare of various kinds.

This is a great site, written by a wonderful author, who writes great books. I have read them all. The description of a post-collapse society in the World Made by Hand series are better than any I have read anywhere, and I have read dozens of post-collapse books.
I have one complaint though. . .saying year in, and year out, year after year, decade after decade that the big collapse is about to happen, like in a month or two, seems. . .inaccurate. It didn’t happen last year, it didn’t happen the year before that, five years before that, it won’t happen this fall, or next year, or the year after that. Repeating again and again and again that the sky is falling, when, in fact, the sky never falls, seems irrational.
I do believe that our debt and dependence on finite resources is going to create big, big problems for the US at some point. I don’t believe that saying it’s about to happen, every few months, for decades is helpful or accurate, though.
It’s a mistake to try & pinpoint the time of a collapse. It’s like seeing a crack in a dam that never gets repaired, & saying that it will collapse on a certain date, year, etc. The only thing you can say with any certainty is that at some point it will fail. Anything else is fortunetelling.

Regarding predicting when a “collapse” might come, there is actually a science of these things.
The science does not allow precise predictions, but does give windows. Didier Sornette is a fairly well known scientist and author (in some circles) who studies these things (he started out in geophysics, which is closer to my dealings with this sort of calculation) who has also made some predictions.
He does not predict a collapse, but a “phase change” in civilization. His number is 2045 plus or minus 15 years. I certainly would not expect any overnight changes, but a period of turmoil starting with the financial system and ending with wars and plagues (is there a difference?) that reduce population and clear the ledgers.
As long as we avoid a full-scale nuclear exchange or a virulent, 100% fatal, man-made plague life (and civilization) will go on.

Looking up Didier I fear he may be too close to the economics of the problem to get a clear view of things. That matters because it affects his judgment about what to do with his math skills.
If all you do is deal with finance you do not have a clear understanding of the actual physical situation because you have been consumed by the abstraction of money. Money is not a real indicator of on the ground reality. Downturns are possible in a land of plenty. JHK can’t predict markets a year ahead and I hope Didier isn’t prediction economics 27 years in the future because he won’t do any better.
I found him in an article basically teaching classical economics to dummies. Not good. If his math reflects his geophysics and his science training fine, if his prediction math has anything to do with money he is full of shit. Highly educated ship but shit it remains.
The math is not like a formula that you plug variables into and get an answer. You might look at “Self-organized Criticality” and “Power Law” on wikipedia.
An illustration is the process of listening to the little “pings” in an item under stress like a cylinder of rock or concrete in a compression test. The pings follow a power law distribution where they increase at a steady rate in accordance with a power law, but then diverge from the power law (become larger and more frequent) as the cylinder approaches rupture.
This sort of behavior also applies to human systems, including wars. As far as markets are concerned the process above depends on the well-documented phenomenon of “crashes” (or other regime changes) occurring after prices “go parabolic” and increase at an increasing rate (depart from the power law distribution). Observation of the price fluctuations allows Sornette’s group to propose “windows” of time in which a crash will occur, but only after a particular market has “gone parabolic” and price fluctuations occur more frequently than the power law predicts.
With war one would look at how often little wars occur and how much damage is inflicted. Others have observed that big wars are preceded by periods in which the rate (and size) of small conflicts increases.
As far as his prediction of the critical time for humanity, this seems to be from observing multiple markets and other human behavior (including population and conflict) on a large scale, all of which show signs of converging on a critical time of 2045 =/- 15 years.
