At first glance, the growth of the super snooper state revealed this weekend — like one of those giant, hidden funguses that spreads for miles under the forests of upper Michigan — is a striking discovery. But I maintain that there is an inverse correlation between the technical abilities of the government to harvest data and their competence to use it for anything. The salient trend in our government is to become more inept, ineffectual, impotent, and feckless, no matter how big the compost heaps of sheer information it manages to pile up.
For spying on your own citizens, the Nazis and the Soviets were way ahead of us using technology no more elegant than phone bugs and filing cabinets. Our immersive techno-narcissism vests too much awe in computer magic itself. What would hurt much more — and work much better — is if Americans become a nation of snitches. That’s a possibility, of course, but I attach a low percentage to it because it requires a respect for authority that is just absent here now, and has been eroding steadily for decades, really ever since Jack Kennedy was gunned down.
Ironically, Barack Obama got where he did because he pretended to be the reincarnation of JFK — a young, dynamic change agent — and it took years to discover that he was a mere bundle of platitudes wrapped in a banana leaf of good intentions, stamped with a sell-by date that, alas, has now passed. His piled-up troubles seem more a matter of inattention than intent — especially his failure to apply the rule of law in banking — and his recent televised attempts to explain himself give off the demoralized vibe of somebody just sadly going through the motions.
Anyway, events are in the driver’s seat, not government officials. We’re in the Koyaanisqatsi zone now — everything is out-of-balance from our financial operations to our geopolitical relations to the state of nature around the planet. Too many stresses have built at too many stress-points and a palpable fear judders through the wireless waves that something has to break. Oddly, political cracks appeared this month in two of the least-expected places: Sweden and Turkey. WTF? I wonder a little now if the revelations of Edward J. Snowdon about the American Security apparatus will bring on a wave of street protests in Washington DC on the Fourth of July. Maybe I’m just channeling my own dim memories of 1969, but this historical moment has a similar tingle. We know that the amalgamated gun nuts are already planning what they’ve advertised as an “armed march” across the nation’s capital. Frankly, I’m kind of glad that they’re doing this. The government needs to be reminded that there are already enough small arms loose in America to temper its cloddish excesses. The time is ripe for others to join in a larger Fourth of July demonstration.
Most satisfying would be a Washington march by college loan debt slaves terminating in a bonfire of the loan contracts on the Ellipse. I keep waiting for the “magic moment” when millions of these poor swindled young grads will send the message thundering through Facebook and Twitter that they are done paying the inflated price for their useless degrees in “marketing” and “gender studies.” Aren’t you amazed that it hasn’t happened yet? (Although the default rate is rising so fast that a general renunciation may be accomplished without public fanfare.)
Meanwhile, it will be interesting to see if the US government goes after Mr. Snowdon, who is currently on the lam in Hong Kong which, some of you may remember, belongs to China. Does that ever have the potential for a world-class embarrassment? There’s less than a month before America’s big annual birthday party, just enough time for this story to build to an explosive climax. The government will surely have to make some kind of move before than. Given its recent tendencies to over-reach on everything, the government could easily screw the pooch on this. The 29-year-old Snowdon has the look and demeanor of an all-American hero and it will be interesting to see the reaction if and when federal agents haul him off a plane in handcuffs. What’s more, Snowdon made a clear, concise, and eloquent statement explaining his actions: “The public needs to decide whether these programs and policies are right or wrong,” he said.

From the comments I have been reading on the blogsphere, it would seem many folks want to feel that Big Brother is looking out for their best interests even if it means giving up privacy and personal freedom. Oh and that darn 4th Amendment doesn’t really apply if the private sector made $1.3 billion spying on everyone everywhere last year. The Neo-cons have won I fear and fascism is already here in the good old USA.
I like the new look of your website. What amazed me was that the old look was still here only a few minutes ago, almost an hour after you posted this. I guess that’s what happens when one is refreshing one of the old pages, instead of going to the new frontpage.
As for the subject of today’s rant, I mentioned that environmentalists have been monitored ever since the very first Earth Day, when Tricky Dick sent the FBI after them. He found nothing, but that hasn’t stopped the authorities. For a blog that follows surveillance and police action against environmentalists and animal rights activists, read “Green is the new Red.”
Finally, the American People keep disappointing you. That’s because the most important thing to most of them is keeping the entertainment going. Screw that up, and you’ll get action. Keep the supply of Real Housewives and Jersey Shore coming, and they’ll happily let reality, if not Reality TV, go to Hell.

The Patriot act level of surveillance started before 9/11 for corporate info on our habits.

I was reading about autonomous robots since the 1950’s or 60’s. Once they are released the only way to stop them is to destroy them before they hit whatever target they want. In the darker SciFi stories they destroy humanity. We are not there at the moment but sometime within the next twenty years it could be the end of Homo Sap(iens)! If this happens then there could be a real estate rush for aliens due to the easy acquisition of Terra.

If this latest revelation doesn’t finally convince the Liberal class that Obama is most certainly NOT in their corner, then they truly are little more than the equivalent of abused spouses who cannot leave, with nonexistent self-esteem.

I wouldn’t characterize Snowdon as a hero, but it takes balls to slap your fellow Americans upside the head… Franklin’s warning rings true: trading freedom for security is a fool’s bargain. We will only lose both (Eisenhower saw this coming as well). The nation needs to snap out of its corporate/petroleum induced stupor -Mr. Snowdon is helping us see what is real vs. what we imagine.

Please, does anyone think that the same incompetent middle management who blithely ignore all evidence of malfeasance and malingering perpetrated by their favorites will be convinced by photos of Miss Congeniality or Mr. Regular Guy with her or his hands in the petty cash jar?
If anyone is concerned that snoops may be reading your on line corresponcence, allow me to make a modest suggestion; consider including some bit of abstruse, boredom inducing content, according to your interests and areas of expertise. Discussions of obscure topics in physics or translations from ancient Chinese poetry ought to scare away most of the lookers, who, in any case, have not the time to exhaustively research all electronic traffic.
It’s about building up a “6-degrees of separation” web of all your friends and contacts based on data mining techniques. Then placing you on the no-fly list, terror watch list, or worse, when your brother in law makes a donation to Earth First, the friend of a friend of a friend with a Muslim name buys a gun, or someone in your dragnet circle makes a donation to a Palestinian charity.
It’s not about incompetent middle management manually ruffling through your personal info, this isn’t the 70s. It’s about automatic face recognition software running through facebook and other photos tied to your online accounts, smart software trawling through any internet posts/emails tied to you and anyone deemed one of your contacts by unaccountable, unappealable algorithms. I’d start getting a bit less complacent.
Whether the govt will or won’t be able to use these powers constructively is really not the full issue. Everything gets abused sooner or later and to say this doesn’t matter is wrong.
The issue I see as even more bizarre is the complete lack of questioning by the two parties in congress. They hate to read, they’re not debating anything in an honest way and they are way too immersed in making money and enjoying the perks of leadership from insider trading et al. to care about what this potentially means.

This seems like one of those “non-events” that have been popping up lately to distract everyone from the reality that there is no economic recovery. Politics are a graft onto the economy, a means of meta-regulation and observation. The more these “scandals” pop up, the more interest is taken away from the more sobering issues like an unsustainable debt, structural unemployment, and a business climate that resembles a toxic swamp. It’s been a “high time” for the last few years while we burn up our accumulated capital of the past couple of centuries to try to Keep Things Normal, but that will go away sooner or later, and the next drop off will be on us before we know it.

Yes, off from work for a slow patch for a coupla weeks.
Watching the 4th Amendment go up in flames is not a “non-event.” Watching the rule of law disintegrate is not a “non-event.” And seeing the extent to which terrorists have truly terrified a pathetic population into handing over their birthright unquestionably is a scandal.
In 1965, with the passage of the Voting Rights and Civil Rights Acts, I really was born a free man in a free country. My dad, who died this past week, fought in World War II to help that process along. it has in my lifetime been shoved massively in reverse. Without equal justice under law and Constitutional guarantees, I can no longer have any confidence that I am free. I’m just acting out my days at the sufference of powers greater than myself that are no longer answerable to me the citizen. And all the AR-15s in the world won’t mean shit when they shut down the internet and the cell phones after we are all texted that martial law has been declared, because we will be an atomized mob faced with a highly organized killing machine.
We would like to commend this site for decreasing the amount of subversive content along with the new format, so it can return to its original purpose…innoculating deviant members of our free and open society against perverted unamerican ideas.
It was the funniest thing for me when I heard that GCHQ in London has been acquiring intelligence on British citizens via an American organisation. It’s the ultimate in out-sourcing to the private sector.

The Daily Fail, read by the wives of the people who run the UK? Hardly. My favorite British Newspaper is The Guardian. They have science coverage that rivals the BBC and have the nerve to call the Beeb on their mistakes.

The American people don’t care that they’re being spied upon. They’ve sorta known that ever since the Shadow War on Terrrrrrrrrrrrer started. That’s just the way things are, to them. They don’t care that they’re deep in student debt that can never be paid back; that part of any future money that might be coming to them should they find a job will be siphoned off for the rent-seeking banks and bill-collectors. It’s just how the system works. My daughter’s boyfriend is one of those indebted people, and he has no intention of demonstratng, because what’s the point? They’re not going to march in the streets because they know no one in government is listening to them. They’ll just hold on, hunker down, hope that they can find enough ketchup to cover the taste of the shit sandwich they’re being served. But as far as demanding anything different, they see what happened to the Occupy movement and calculate it’s not worth their time.

With all respect, Jim, you’ve always gone too easy on Obama. In precisely the same way we were told all we would need to know about the administration fronted by W when Chaney and Rumsfeld were announced as the new rulers, we had no need to doubt who is now in charge when Obama deferentially announced his “selection” of Summers, Rubin, Geithner, et al.
Obama’s attention or inattention is literally irrelevant. The rule of law has not been applied to banking because the President has been forbidden to do so.

It’s an OK new page, although I kind of miss the more colorful look of the old one. Oddly, I find most website “redos” these days to be less interesting than the originals, but maybe I just have a retro aesthetic…? The one thing that does really bother me about your new page is the way the two ads for your books, slide down and follow me as I scroll down the page. It’s distracting and annoying. Sorry to be the grump here.
I don’t like that, either. It’s like an annoying person saying “Hey! Hey! Look at me! Look at me! Hey! Hey, are you going to look at me? Hey!”
The new look is fine… sort of antiseptic, though.
So the NSA is watching, so what?
They’ve been watching in some way or another for as long as the agency’s been around. By law they’re not supposed to watch Americans but they do when the foreigners they watch communicate with entities within the US.
The do have some impressive capabilities but the question remains as to how well these can be leveraged. For example, decades ago when I was still loosely associated with the agency there was a project that used speech recognition software to parse for certain key words or phrases in telephone conversations and then alert analysts. The test involved eavesdropping on the phone conversations of a then prominent New York real estate developer who was seeking financing for a project. The test was to see if the routines developed would be able to correctly signal when his banker called to say the loan was approved (or not). With some assistance the routines “worked” so I was told.
As for what there’s all the fuss lately, we shouldn’t be all that concerned. When I was in that line of business most of what we recorded and translated was judged to be “NILVAL” or, more commonly, of no value. And that traffic was quite limited and specifically targeted. All that’s being done is essentially trend analysis of cell phone, Internet and credit card usage. They’ve no doubt been doing this for a while but I’m sure they are far less effective than the Israelis are who’ve been doing this under the guise of detailed cell phone billing ever since that service was first offered by cell phone providers decades ago and nobody seems to mind that one iota.
Although it’s possible to do all sorts of eavesdropping, what you’re left with at the end of day (each and every day that is) is a whole lot of garbage that some poor schmucks way down on the food chain have to analyze. And in most cases they don’t care enough about what they’re doing to notice the obvious let alone the subtle. So, as usual, this is much ado about nothing; something that’s been given prominence on stage to distract us from what the end of the age of oil has in store for us.
My sentiments exactly. Include some abstruse boring content, and the schmucks will glaze over, zone out, and move along.
You frighten me George. If you, having seen this insidious process from the inside, fail to understand how dangerous it is, how can we hope for our fellow citizens to awake from their stupor?

I agree that this has the potential of being incredibly dangerous. Indeed, it’s quite possible that a mistake made by an uncaring analyst could set off a series of events that could ruin some innocent’s life as well of those he or she might be responsible for. But my concerns are not generally placed on those within the government but rather with those with access thereto who are able leverage the kind of resources that the NSA can bring to bear. That does happen by the way: local law enforcement agencies can get the NSA to set things up for them and, in effect, leave the room while they go about their work.
In my opinion the key thing to keep in mind is the fact that we’re now all experiencing this “end of the age of oil” together in lockstep, including the entitled one percent. Because that entitled one percent has thus far be able to retain much their power and status at everybody else’s expense, we’re also experiencing a constitutional crisis. We’ve thus far experienced three of these so called constitutional crises, the first following the Shay’s Rebellion which brought about the writing of the Constitution, the second which was resolved by the Civil War as well as the ratification of the 13th and 14th Amendments, and the third via the passing of FDR’s New Deal. And what was the dominant social condition common to each crisis? Wealth disparity.
This is where we are now and this is why we should be concerned by this moderately intrusive form of surveillance. Not because some low-ranking analyst might accidently ruin somebody’s life but rather because those who do the dirty work for the entitled one percent have and will continue to do everything they can to maintain or improve their status of those they serve relative to other so entitled minorities in any other country or the rest of us irrespective of any code of honor, rule of law or system of morality. If you want to see an extreme example of what could befall us, look only to Syria where their entitled one percent is laying waste to the whole country in an attempt to maintain its wealth and status.
And don’t you dare say it can’t happen here! Before this is all over it can and it will.
I agree entirely with that George – just can’t reconcile it with your earlier message, which seemed to take the position that we shouldn’t worry about any of this stuff.
Assuming we’ve found common ground here, I would still go beyond your admission that this large-scale surveillance may destoy individual lives. I believe that this, alongside HSA contingency plans for martial law – with them deciding upon the contingency – virtually assure the destruction of American Democracy when the economy collapses, banks turn depositors away, and all Hell breaks loose.

Interesting that this is erupting just as Bradley Manning’s Kangeroo Kourt farce gets underway. Due process is dead when the defence isn’t allowed to submit a defence because it’s too classified. I’m reminded of an excellent old Australian film “Breaker Morant” about a rigged court marshal which, ironically, was used to teach us Officer Cadets military law. I’m more concerned that you about the odds of governmental misuse of massive amounts of metadata. I think a great deal of harm is possible and that the intelligence machine is not yet as incompetent as we might hope.

In Australia it might not be. In Australia, numerous warnings about intent to fly airplanes into large buildings might even have been heeded by those in power.
As one of our lesser known and more intelligent public intellectuals said years ago (I paraphrase), in the USA the general incompetence [in high places] is taken for granted by everyone over the age of 12.

I run a local foods website here in Miami. Local food exploded down here about 2 years ago, with little expansion this year. My conclusion for the reason it hasn’t grown as fast: local food means people must prepare meals from scratch. Of course we’re being surveilled. When has the class of people that controls the governments and money not used technology to their advantage. In the current situation, I believe it is being used to anticipate trends rather than pick on individuals. I believe it is more likely that communication technology is being used to track efforts to organize against governments.

Interesting knock-on effects of the Stasi state to consider:
1.) If one knows they are being surveilled, are they more likely to toe the gum’mint line and not make waves or discuss the obvious predicaments that the gum’mint would rather not have revealed in public discourse?

As an IT professional, the only thing that surprises me is that people are surprised that the State had taken advantage of available technology to surveil its citizens.
It did not actually take “years” to figure out that Obama was another empty suit like GWB. If you were paying attention on the day he was sworn into office you would have known. When he said in his inaugural address that he would no longer have lobbyists in government, at the SAME TIME that lobbyists were being sworn into office, you would have to conclude that he was either lying or incompetent. Perhaps both. Or perhaps just in the pocket of corporate interests, like all other politicians these days.
I am constantly amazed that the poor don’t rise up and throw off their overlords. Apparently having nothing left to lose doesn’t make you more free to act.

Let us not forget that the current ratio of “agents” to citizens in the US is approx 1 to 40,000. Whereas at the height of its power the Stasi had one agent for every 170 citizens. They employed thousands of civilian informers who were motivated by the very real threat of simply being “disappeared” someday. That said–people here need to keep their eyes and mouths open. I live in a small town where membership in the wrong party can cause you all sorts of minor to major inconvenience barely traceable to a source. It can happen on a grand scale with the aid of the “miracle” of the digital world.
I have avidly read and agreed with most everything you’ve posted on the Internet for many years, and gratefully stipulate that you are right far more often than wrong, and certainly more often than me. I do, however, have one minor criticism to make, because I prefer my heroes to be flawless & if you could just fix this one little item then you would be damned near perfect.
I think we all have a sort of “real live world” model in our head , call it a personal world view alogrithm, with which we manufacture scenarios of ‘what is’ or ‘what happens next?’ or ‘what might I do to fix this or that’ . The raw data fed into this modeler comes from whatever information manages to reach us through the filters of our various senses, plus earlier results produced by the model itself.
Some folk’s models work amazingly well (they’re smart) and others’ run very badly (dumb) but NO ONE’S modeling apparatus dependably produces accurate forecasts every time. Even very smart people can make astoundingly dumb mistakes (e.g. we have Einstein largely to thank for the horror of atomic bombs and their offspring.)
Either way, and in every case, the world views produced by our inner ponderings are delusional. They have no reality outside the confines of our craniums, and even on the inside they’re just a bunch of neurons firing away like some maniacal grand finale of cognitive 4th of July pyrotechnics.
My point is that the real world runs as it runs, and we merely play catch up with the delusions produced by our less-than-perfect world view modeling efforts.
If some folks choose to complacently take the real world as it comes at them , because they know from experience that their ‘internal modeling equipment’ is no damn good & is mistaken or inadequate most of the time , then who are we to ridicule them ? Are they dumb? Are they ‘low-lifes’ ? Are they covered with tatoos and full of controlled substances ? In many cases yes they are , but they are no more delusional than us smart people (as we like to think of ourselves.) It’s just that our delusions (on the average) have proved out to be more ‘real world accurate’ than their delusions.
In the end this fact is just another part of reality , making those people just other elements of the real world that we have little choice but to live in. We should model that to see if there aren’t ways to help them have better delusions, by which I mean to say ; more like mine.

I don’t agree with crediting any one person or EVENT as the source of all subsequent events…unless they’re a God entity. Einstein was a scientist and worked with other scientists to develop the technologies which have been abused by others – their sponsors.

Everyone should be able to realize that people can only know things about you that you put out there. The delusion is that people put stuff out in ALL formats they think will never be discoverable by God or legal teams (man). As long as there is a record of something there is means for discovery. Once you share a secret, it’s no longer a secret.
On the surface, Mr. Snowden is a very young man who has had a series of misfortunes in his life one of which is working for a U.S. government contractor with a controversial political and social history. He’s obviously smart about what he’s studied, IT, but he hasn’t really looked deeply into the organizations he’s decided to join in his life. He likes to take risks. Probably, he idolizes Julian Assange.

His intent, of course, can only be a matter of conjecture; so your opinion is just as valid as mine. But there is evidence he was indoctrinated and trained in his youth on how to bring this nation to its knees and convert it to a socialist paradise. “Community activist,” his former role, is a euphemism for Alinski Dirty Fighter. Granted, he might have gone into office with some good intentions (such as closing Gitmo); but if so, he apparently is too cowardly to act on them.
On the subject of “behind the curve,” I still don’t know why you ridicule gun owners and 2nd amendment activists (though I do agree that marching on D.C. is a stupid and dangerous idea). A year ago, you would have poked fun at those of us who think massive NSA surveillance has been happening all along. And now believe this same government would not disarm law-abiding citizens so it can further oppress us?
Sometimes causing some trouble with someone saves a hell of a lot later on. There is going to be civil war if the Government tries to take our guns – as they plan to. The only thing more comical about just how much myself and other “weirdos” have been absolutely correct about most things, regarding the onrushing totalitarian montsrosity now being birthed before us, lo these last ten years now ready to slouch the final kilometres to Bethlehem to be born with great fanfare and the love of the enlsaved for their firm, morally upright masters, is just how completely oblivious Bovinus Americus is to all of it, even at this late and laughable date STILL.
I never would have guessed the power of normalcy bias, social inhibition, the discount rate and several other psychological forces that hammer these beliefs in place until some unforeseen critical mass occurs, as usual waaay too late.

I was born and still believe in the words of the Founding Fathers, whatever their own faults and flaws they stand out as saint, if only when standing next to the 8000 year parade of sociopaths that have always and will continue to rule the earth until blessed extinction.

I find the new site design and layout to be ugly, and difficult to read. It’s all white, which is painful to the eyes. And the text is miniature and overall the site has the look of a dated WordPress circa 2003. Are people really digging this new design?

Personally I like the aesthetics of the new format… but that’s just a personal taste thing. No accounting for it. About the text size there is a pretty good solution in the tool bar of your Browser, ( under the “View” menu in Firefox, for example) that lets you zoom the whole screen up to whatever size works for you.

Forget the spying, we all knew if it was electronic, it was monitored. Yes and it’s really easy for them to turn the microphone/camera on your device on and record from that too. Of much more importance was the Supreme’s decision to allow DNA being taken during a (for now) felony arrest. 60 Minutes ran a story some years ago about how DNA is similar in families. If a relative has had his/her DNA taken, they can find you quickly.
Going back to a Kunstler, I think the reason there is not relevant action against the State is twofold: first most of the costs of it are being borrowed. Secondly, we now longer interact much outside of work or structured activities. No is walking along the streets and talking to their neighbors who are sitting on the porch. Previous revolutions (intellectual and violent) may have been launched in coffee houses, but if you’ve been to a Starfucks or a local place, you know people only talk to those they came in with.
The revolution will come when the baby boomers realize there is 1. only a tiny percentage of promised money available to fund their retirement and medical costs and 2. even with that gone, taxes must dramatically rise.
And yet they continue to give our money away as if there was no tomorrow. No more aid to Africa and the Third World. Those place are hopeless. We have to save ourselves. No more aid to Israel or the Arab World. They have more money than we do.
And again – it’s not their money to give in the first place. There’s nothing about foreign aid in the Constitution. It’s just thievery of the People by the Elite to curry special favors abroad.

It’s been a bad few weeks for cultural assimilation.
Last month, two welfare-receiving immigrants in the United States, Dzhokhar and Tamerlan Tsarnaev, set off bombs at the Boston Marathon, killing three people and injuring hundreds. By the end of the week, they had murdered a cop and engaged in a wild shoot-out and bomb-throwing melee with the police.
Last week, a couple of ethnic Nigerians butchered a British soldier with meat cleavers in broad daylight on a bustling street in a London suburb, then boasted about the murder in video interviews with bystanders. (On the bright side, they did not claim to be princes and ask for your life savings.)
Also last week, immigrants, mostly Muslims, began rioting in peaceful Sweden — burning schools to the ground, torching cars and throwing rocks at the police. (Who among us hasn’t lost his temper trying to assemble an Ikea china cabinet?) ………….
Supporters of the West’s current immigration policies can’t keep ducking reality. So they try to shut down debate by calling their opponents racists, xenophobes, know-nothings and fascists.

May as well get the confessions out of the way early & admit that impertinance (sass back sense) accounts for at least half of my shipping weight , but in the sense of pertinence to the topic at hand I think what I wrote goes right to the heart of this week’s post.
Drugs, Tats, apathy and a host of other markers of antisocial resentments are straight up protest of the disenfranchisement rubbed into the faces of at least the last three generations of Americans. Governments and the corporations that own them have had just three things to say to each new crop as they reached the age of majority :
1) Buy our useless crap at ever rising prices with your ever sinking wages, 2) Give us only your best and brightest, so long as they have no scrupels about screwing over their compatriots, and 3) Now the rest of you chattel go die in our wars and shut the fuck up !
The world view of those generations is typically pretty screwed up, but they are still the only resource that we have for survival of the whole damned species… and ridiculing them ( about anything) is not just counter-productive. It’s suicidal.
At this particularly interesting moment, documentation of what we have long suspected about the surveilence state has captured the next 15 minutes of the nations attention span. Clock’s ticking. We’ve got until next weekend, I reckon, to raise enough ruckus that the story doesn’t get pushed to the back pages where Washington wants it. The ones who need to hear and respond are not the assholes inside the Beltway (we’ve already got their full attention… though not in a good way).
The ones who need to internalize the message are the beer drinking drug toking, music addicted tatooed tens of thousands in places like Gezi Park and Taksim Square. Yoy won’t get ’em without showing a little respect… and a teenaged girl facing into tear gas and water canon has sure as hell got my respect. I don’t give a shit about whether a kid loves country western and stock car racing. I do care, very much, that he knows I appreciate his walking into a cop’s truncheon to defend our rights.

I understand the sentiments and the reasoning behind your post, Mr. Smith. However, these tatted, pierced, dope-smoking kids just don’t have the skills or intellect that it takes to ORGANIZE massive, coordinated assaults like the protests against Vietnam in the 1960s and early 1970s.
Look at the “Occupy …” movement. Nowadays one hardly hears a whimper about it because it takes tenacity and an attention span to persist. This kind of character is present in isolated individuals like your teenaged girl who got tear gassed. Isolated individuals ain’t gonna get ‘er done.

Fair Point. So where are all those 60s revolutionaries now? Oh, I know. They either sold out and assimilated into the status quo or burned out and died. Either way, even if the youth were capable of initiating a revolution why should they come to the aide of the complacent Boomer?
All of the corruption and rot we have before us today has been neatly swept under the rug by those 50+ complacent losers who saw every sign that things were going awry and did nothing, nothing at all to stop it. Why are they even worth saving, let alone revolting for?
Don’t be so sure the Millenials are incapable of organizing and putting their minds and bodies to something and accomplishing it. They’re doing it already, but it’s hard to see for two reasons: 1) Things have gotten so out of whack in civic and political life that us older folks can’t even see when they’re militating against it. 2) They’re still at a stage in life where everything’s possible and their needs and wants are few. When those biological clocks start to tick really loudly on them and they feel the need to have kids, do so, then try to house and feed them, get them to the doctor as needed, and give them decent educations, they’ll start to discover just how thoroughly they’ve been misled and robbed.
Pooh-pooh the Occupy movement all you want, but it did FINALLY get the idea out into the wild that the current social contract (basically, an ever-smaller segment getting ever-richer at the direct expense of everyone else) isn’t ordained by the laws of nature and isn’t what hardly anybody wants.
Finally, there’s a whole generation of us out here, between the Boomers and Millenials, who’ve been struggling mightily for decades now. We were born into a country that still had ideals, that was still trying to make strides in justice and fairness, hearing stories of how our parents wandered into great careers, paid their own full-time college tuition with some unskilled part time job, had to make “some” sacrifices but were able to keep a spouse at home all the time. Imagine our dismay when what we found instead was a Red Queen world, except that you can never really run fast enough to even stand still.
That’s kept us awfully busy, but we’re starting to get to an age where kids are finally leaving the house or at least getting old enough not to require constant babysitting. In other words, we’re starting to have some time in the evenings. Even though we’ve been subject to the most strenuous efforts to keep us socially atomized, and our careers haven’t been nearly as high-flying as our parents,’ we are of an age where we do know some people and we have some skills and we just know some shit. Plus, we saw it all go down.
Occupy was a first sortie. It’s supposed failure was just a media meme. They acted as if it should have been the whole 20 years of racial-antiwar-antipoverty-environmental-feminist protests all at one go. The next sortie could be when the Millenials REALLY discover how limited are their prospects. Meanwhile, Gen-X will have some time on its hands and some skills and (relative to the Millenials at least) some latent power. That could make things interesting!
Sam, your remarks are well noted, but I feel like maybe you’re only talking about yourself or, at most, a small subset of people who are quietly developing their real world survival skills as the rest of this fake world crumbles.

These social outcries, no matter whether you believe the legitimacy of the participants motives, were representative of the best efforts of people from 3 generational cohorts to try and effect Change in the U.S. They were the best this country has to offer and were terrible failures on too many levels to count. So were the hippie protests of the 60s by the way, save a few civil rights landmarks, which were only offered as minor appeasements to reinforce the illusion of democracy in this country; meanwhile, the bandits still got away with everything.
The majority of people in this country are simply not capable of meaningful protest beyond holding fucking signs on a street corner, never mind the types of valiant protest strong enough to trigger a potentially necessary violent revolution.
To expect the few within the younger generations still fit enough and mentally capable of sacrificing and taking the thumping needed to save the assess of the redundant mass is just another injustice and example of passing the buck so typical to the American consumer character. Why do these atrabilious older assholes assume someone else should do the heavy lifting for them and their stupid kids? Why do people in this country need to be rescued by revolutionaries?

Yes. Reality is far too much for ordinary people – and that’s just the way the Elite want it. That’s why they conditioned them that way. People have to fight an inner war against what has been put inside them. But most people have no inner life and have no idea what this even means.

So the internet really isn’t a public street or highway where we have a real world view of what is actually going on. Most of us live in real places with neighbors who have a variety of backgrounds; some well known and others more private. However, there are some things that can’t be hidden in the real world:
who we are closely associated with,
what we drive,
our base economic status,
whatever is seen with the naked eye and that’s a heck of a lot.
Unless you’re a writer who never goes outside much, you’re in the public realm most of your life. People can infer a lot about you just from that. So I don’t believe in just taking whatever someone markets or sells themselves to be on a web page. I don’t believe our intelligence community relies heavily on computer data. We have to look at information as a whole and people as a whole person, not just what people want us to know.
Mr. Snowden is someone who went public because he really doesn’t want to be a spy anymore because he feels like it’s BAD now; he’s a bad guy. He probably thought it was “cool” to be a spy and be a “hero” especially since he has physical limitations from breaking his legs training in the military. Don’t know if anyone remembers but a few years ago it came out that the UK govt planned to spend several hundred million UKpounds to install surveillance cameras inside people’s houses to keep tabs on them.
This program supposedly started with about 2,000 homes and was supposed to expand to about 20,000. It was meant to target “problem” families.
This was the plan of a leftie UK govt. The chief criticism from the opposition Conservatives was that it was too little too late. I’ll bet the ghost of George Orwell had a good chuckle.
And then there was a big city US police chief that remarked that if you’ve done nothing wrong you have nothing to worry about so what’s the prob with surveillance cameras in the house?
Imagine a general deployment of in-house surveillance. They’ll say that this is all “necessary”, that it’s all for the public good, that there are trade-offs, privacy for security.
Maybe they’ll claim that you won’t be spied on “live” without “court approval”. Or they’ll claim that none of the footage of you and your family will actually be looked at without a warrant. And that the video and sound records will be “encrypted”. They would be lying of course.
You can imagine voyeuristic security company contractors getting their jollies…And when they say that data is “encrypted” it generally means that it will be in the Ukraine by nightfall.
But don’t worry, it will be minimally disruptive, a technician will be around in your neighborhood and it will be no more bothersome than a telephone installation. You’ll forget that the cameras are even there. So accept it, it will become the new normal.
What the US govt was doing with this secret data scouring was/is astoundingly hare-brained and was destined, as sure as night follows day, to blow up. As it just did.
But I’m wondering why Snowden picked China, of all places, to run to. The Chinese PTB don’t like smarty pants like Snowdon. Snowdon may fear persecution and imprisonment from US authorities. But I suspect that his fate in the hands of the Chinese could be considerably worse.
Maybe Snowdon will come to realize this. I don’t know, maybe it will occur to Snowdon that his only option will be to cut a deal with the Chinese security services to tell them what he knows, to work with them in return for his “safety”. Or maybe it won’t occur to him. Maybe it will be a hard faced Chinese interrogator that “suggests” it to him.
I suspect that if Snowdon does manage to cut a deal, that he will rapidly come to regret it. I suspect that the “deal” will have highly variable and unpalatable terms, terms that dictated at the sole discretion of the Chinese depending on what they need or want. I suspect that the Chinese won’t go easy on him either, that they will be extremely harsh and demanding taskmasters.
I wonder about Snowdon. Maybe he’s one tough son of a bitch. Or maybe he’s a naive idealist. Or maybe he lived in a delusional fantasy-land where he is a fighter for what is good and what is right. Now, don’t get me wrong, we need idealists that will fight for what is good and what is right, that will sacrifice everything for the common good. So, what kind is Snowdon? I have no earthly idea. I suppose that we’ll find out soon enough. He’s got some extremely trying times ahead of him.
What comes of Assange-style or Snowdon-style revelations and data dumps? Maybe something good. Maybe nothing at all. What came out of Assange’s revelations? Nothing, that’s what. Assange is still holed up, stinking up some embassy or other, unable to stick his nose out the door.
What will come of Snowdon’s revelations? Likely nothing. A short-lived shit-storm and then next month it will start to fade from public view. And terror networks likely knew anyway that they were subject to high tech monitoring and behaved accordingly. Now they know for sure at least some of the means.
I suspect that Snowdon is finding that this whole business is already starting to wear really thin. Defiance has a heavy price tag. Not everyone is cut out to be Nelson Mandela. I also suspect that with today’s 140 character attention spans Snowdon will be quickly forgotten, that friends will become very, very scarce. And Snowdon will start to feel very, very alone.

Seriously? I am surprised so many people are surprised at the situation. Did you really think no one was watching? I am amazed it took that many years for them to build such a surveillance system. I actually thought it was in place 5 years ago when I warned my marketing and PR students about it. We lived through a very unique time period with free internet (free in terms of $$ and in terms of speech – I think both are nearing the end). I am pasting all useful content into Word or text files, medical, business advice. I thing the next wave will be in the area of self-health. Something terrible will happen to someone who would allegedly use some herbal advice from some website, and this news will spread, and then the government will proactively shut down all such websites. Or something along those lines. We just need a good story. Medical establishment is losing too much money off people who are not going to doctors.
What’s interesting is that now, when people realize the extent of the surveillance they are under, I expect that there will be more “heroes”.
Everyone is affected, every word is recorded, every email, every search query – then what do we have to lose? I call it a “happy face fascism”, although obviously, we are far away from the type of oppression people suffered under Hitler.

New Font
This is a classic font that one finds in REAL books. This is the internet and requires a different kind of font for the different kind of screen. However, many people use a Kindle that is made to read like a book with a special screen.
I like the Font Sizer and I think most people can change the font in THEIR browsers under one of the settings menus.

If you post a reply to a comment written days ago (in this case, 4 days ago) what are the odds that a reader is going to go all the way back to the beginning of the week’s comments to see what new replies may have been posted? And unless that person has a photographic memory how would he or she know what is new without carefully examining every date and time stamp. Slim to none.
Here’s another thing about Jim’s makeover of the CFN site: Let’s say you have the Kunstler blog bookmarked as a favorite so this morning you accessed the blog to see what new posts have appeared. You scroll to the bottom and find that the last post showing is dated June 12th etc. You then click on “newer posts” and it takes you further down to maybe June 14th. Again you have to click on “newer posts” and scroll to the bottom to finally arrive at the very last original post. If the last post was a reply there is no telling where it may appear within the entire comments section.
I hope, but am not optimistic, that Jim will see this comment/reply and realize that this needs to be fixed.

Computer programming for the Prism seem fairly simple..A knowledgable twelve girl could probably write most of the programs. The program that extracts data from Google and the email data would require some experience. We would let the CIA send the badass phone number and internet protocol addresses to her. …Which leads this paranoiac to query: Why would a gum’mint want to give the impression of omniscient surveillance in an ongoing [and likely, permanent] era of economic non-activity/decline?
I would posit that it is very specifically to keep the lumpenprole from ‘organically’ coalescing/organizing a way of “inhabiting the landscape” (tm JHK) that is outside of and not subject to that gum’mint’s control. With all due respect to your computing expertise, aren’t you leaving out exponential increases in all computng technologies since the discrediting of the fields you speak of occured..how long ago (you didn’t mention it in your post)?
That is my question: Considering the exponential increases in computing technology since “the last time” how can you be so sure it’s such a bust this time?
Consider: How has data storage capacity increased since “the last time” (since you didn’t mention the specific time frame, I can’t really make any educated guess of my own, but it probably has to be at least one logarithm higher, no?)
Consider: How much has computing speed and power increased since the time you speak of when these fields were discredited?
Consider every other thing that I, who is not an expert in the field, can’t think of and how those technologies have increased capacity in the intervening years and how that might increase the efficacity (efficaciousness?) of the overall fields?
Consider even how much more data input exists to analyze.
With all due respect, it seems to me you are making something of a blanket statement without considering Moore’s Law and the clockwork increases in magnitude in all technologies.
You seem so sure, but especially since we are talking bi-decadal logarithmic increases, even if it was only a time-period five years ago, we are talking of VERY significant (statistically and otherwise) increases that to my mind, would make a blanket statement as you make very iffy given the enormous rapid leaps in technological capabilities as well as input data, both volume and convenience of collection (which is at least an order of magnitude more convenient, if such things could be quantified).
If your answer is to rant at me, call me a liar and a dunderhead, please don’t waste your time and mine.

I know all about Moore’s law but the problem is that conventional computing technology is now reaching quantum limits on speed. You have to go to optical computing to get another order of magnitude. Conventional chips have hit a limit at about 10 GHz plus or minus a couple of GHz.
Ask yourself this: If computing is so much more powerful, how come the rate of SOFTWARE innovation came to a crawl after about Y2K? What’s the great new invention of the new millenium. Please don’t tell me it’s clouds ’cause clouds are a REGRESSION to the old idea of a MAINFRAME where you stick your data in a central repository.
Modern computer science is an abject failure of innovation which is why they had to come up with “Big Data” to appear innovative yet that, too, is a regression to former failures (AI and statistical biz forecasting). The glory days of computer science were in the period of 1980-1998 and it’s been a whole lot of nothing since then.

An addendum …. the chance of optical computing going mainstream any time soon is zero. The components cost too much and require amazing refinements like absolute smoothness of reflective surfaces. An optical PC would debut for about $50K per machine and we have ZERO manufacturing facilities for mass manufacture of the components.
Since other woes will intervene in the next decade, it’s virtually moot to talk about whether optical computing will come about. In ten years the American way of life, already in steep decline, will be about to go Mad Max.

I hope you noticed his ability to speak on his feet without so much as an “umm” or a “like.” People at NSA make decent money but we figure they’ll be able to monetize all the private data at their disposal to make up for any shortfall. Hell, our operatives know the quarterly operating results of companies before the CEO gets them from Finance. Regarding the CFN site update, I’ll give it a C-. With Jim being into architecture and an accomplished artist I would have expected something more colorful and eye-catching. And ditto to something said up-thread…I’m not crazy about the font. It would be nice, too, if one could narrow the column width to one’s own taste without the sentences bleeding off out of sight to the right. Obviously the font size is too small and Jim has provided a button to increase, decrease or reset it. Better yet you could do CTRL + to magnify stuff on your screen (several iterations if you want) and CTRL – to shrink it back down.
What really bugs me is the comments not all being in order by date. Say you’ve read half way thru 200 comments and then come back the next day and now there are 300 comments. Some of those 100 new comments may be interspersed anywhere amongst the first 200 if they are replies to originals.
Yes, the replies are right under the initial comment and not with the new posts. This vastly reduces the energy of the discussion and dooms this Blog never to live up to its previous incarnation.

Nobel Scientists Speak Out and TELL YOU HOW to Hide From the GUBMINT that BIG-JIM tell’s us NOT to fear …
BIG BROTHER really is watching you. A series of revelations over the past week has revealed the extent of the US government’s snooping. But there are ways that the average citizen can avoid the prying eyes of the state.
Last week, whistleblower Edward Snowden – a former contractor with the National Security Agency (NSA) – told UK newspaper The Guardian that the NSA not only has details of phone calls made by millions of Verizon customers, it also has some form of access to its citizens’ internet activity as part of a programme named Prism.
The details of exactly how the NSA accesses personal data held by US internet companies are still unclear (see “Split the difference”). Access to Verizon’s call metadata was obtained using a secret court order forcing the firm to hand over information including call duration, number and cellphone tower details.
But the main cause for concern is that network science today means governments can glean remarkable insights from the vast amount of data they compile about their citizens’ every move. So what exactly can they find out about us – and how can we opt out?
Tanya Berger-Wolf at the University of Illinois in Chicago, who studies methods of extracting information from large data sets, says combining data from sources such as Google, Facebook and Verizon can tell you a lot. “You can put together a very good, composite dossier of a person,” she says.
Phone calls alone can provide plentiful information. Yves-Alexandre de Montjoye of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and colleagues analysed 1.5 million anonymised call records from a Western cell carrier. They showed that it takes just four calls or text messages, each made at a different time and place, to distinguish one person’s movements from everyone else’s (Nature Scientific Reports, doi.org/msd).
An experiment by German politician Malte Spitz shows what happens when you fuse such data with online activity. Spitz sued German telecoms giant Deutsche Telekom to get it to hand over six months of his own phone data. Then, working with German newspaper Die Zeit, Spitz melded that data with social network and other web information about him to create a map that tracked his movements and activities. It showed where Spitz was at any given time, what he was doing, how many calls he made and how long he was connected to the internet. The NSA’s supercomputers would make light work of creating an even more detailed portrait of anyone it was interested in.
Chris Clifton, who works on data privacy at Purdue University in Indiana, says the NSA will be using software to sort the records into groups by similarity – people who make lots of calls, for example, or people who never call abroad. Patterns in time could be useful, too. If one call appears to spark a flurry of others, that might mean the first phone number belongs to an authority figure in a criminal organisation, for instance.
But for citizens who want to guard their privacy, there are a number of options. Apps like Silent Circle and RedPhone can already encrypt your calls and send them over a data connection or Wi-Fi instead of through your carrier’s voice network. They also stop carriers from logging end phone numbers. Downloads have exploded since The Guardian’s revelations – but such apps do not give you full anonymity because they cannot prevent your movements between phone masts being tracked.
A new standard for communication known as WebRTC (Web Real-Time Communication) could enable users to make calls over the internet without leaving any traces at all. That’s because it doesn’t rely on centralised servers but rather sends traffic directly between individual computers.
Combined with an encrypted connection using the anonymising Tor network, which sends data via volunteer networks of computers, WebRTC could keep your internet communications invisible to prying eyes.
An organisation called Tor Servers is aiming to bolster traffic speeds across Tor exit nodes – the points at which traffic from Tor enters the real internet. Its mission statement is to “make the Tor network more stable, faster and more anonymous for everyone”.
There are even efforts afoot to build an entirely new internet, one free from control by large corporations and, by extension, governments. Project Meshnet aims to have its own router hardware, and for this to communicate without using the infrastructure of large telecoms companies. That is still some way off, but for now you can use the software version, called cjdns, which runs on existing infrastructure. Physical Meshnets are already up and running in Maryland, Seattle and New York.
And there are ways to protect people’s privacy while still obtaining information. An MIT project called openPDS works by only allowing third parties to ask questions of a data set, without allowing them to get their hands on the raw data. This, combined with legal systems that notify individuals when their data has been searched, could change the privacy debate. “Such a ‘mixed approach’ to privacy is the way forward,” de Montjoye says.

Several days ago I happened to be watching CNBC when the usually overheated Jim Cramer proclaimed that everyone should “just accept” that some people get to front run trades in the various markets. I turned the TV off and haven’t turned it on since.

Actually the plans are not for Houston, but around the greater Houston region. And they have been on paper as plans since the 80s but many of the segments are not being built. For example, the segment from SH 249 (Tomball Parkway) to IH 45 (N) (North Freeway) through Harris County which folks in The Woodlands might find useful.

I had a dream several years back wherein the American people were being rounded up into personnel carrier vehicles in order to be transported to some unknown location. Each person was given a color to denote a “threat” level. Green was a zero threat, yellow was a questionable threat, and red was an American citizen considered to be a strong threat. Each person was made to wear the color and board the vehicle in the neighborhoods corresponding to their threat. It seems that still today, though not out in the open yet, it is a distinct possibly they could be planning for.
By the way, after the Gulf Oil Spill just happened and there was little news about the extent of the problem or any stirrings in the media. I also had a dream that Matthew Simmons would die and it would “look” like an accident. Behind the activities surrounding this event was a criminal racket that captured locals and held them in the bay (or ie, at bay).
No one knows the full extent of criminal activities at the highest levels, but one should probably not sleep too easily at night.

If the last post was a reply there is no telling where it may appear within the entire comments section.

I remember some of Asoka’s assumptions:
1. A LIVING, NOT DEAD UNIVERSE: Asoka said we live in a living, regenerative universe. This insight transforms our understanding of where we are, who we are, and where we are going. Asoka rejected the “laws of dead matter physics” because he/she said there is no “law giver.”
2. SUSTAINABLE WAYS OF LIVING: Consumerism makes sense in a dead universe. But voluntary, happy, simplicity makes more sense in a living universe — and that was Asoka’s view of the reality emerging now. Asoka posted many times on permaculture (even though he or she was often attacked for doing so). Asoka posted on how to live on $12,000 a year, which is where he or she thought we would collectively be most happy, as well as in tune with energy descent.
3. MASS MEDIA AND MASS MIND: Asoka believed that at this pivotal time in human evolution, it is vitally important that messages in the mass media serve our psychological and spiritual health and not distort our collective intelligence, imagination and evolution. Hence, Asoka’s endless battle with CFN doomsterism / CFN pessimism / CFN fatalism.
4. GREAT TRANSITION STORIES: Asoka said we are in the early stages of a ‘great transition.’ He or she noted there are a number of stories that offer insight into this process, none of which appear on CFN.
5. TRUTH AND RECONCILIATION: Asoka believed we require processes that will acknowledge and work to overcome the thousands of years of separation that has been experienced by different people at different times, including: women/men, poor/rich, black/white, old/young, Muslim/Christian, humans/other life-forms, etc. Asoka thought we would benefit enormously from a global, truth and reconciliation process at every scale.
