At first glance, the growth of the super snooper state revealed this weekend — like one of those giant, hidden funguses that spreads for miles under the forests of upper Michigan — is a striking discovery. But I maintain that there is an inverse correlation between the technical abilities of the government to harvest data and their competence to use it for anything. The salient trend in our government is to become more inept, ineffectual, impotent, and feckless, no matter how big the compost heaps of sheer information it manages to pile up.

For spying on your own citizens, the Nazis and the Soviets were way ahead of us using technology no more elegant than phone bugs and filing cabinets. Our immersive techno-narcissism vests too much awe in computer magic itself. What would hurt much more — and work much better — is if Americans become a nation of snitches. That’s a possibility, of course, but I attach a low percentage to it because it requires a respect for authority that is just absent here now, and has been eroding steadily for decades, really ever since Jack Kennedy was gunned down.

Ironically, Barack Obama got where he did because he pretended to be the reincarnation of JFK — a young, dynamic change agent — and it took years to discover that he was a mere bundle of platitudes wrapped in a banana leaf of good intentions, stamped with a sell-by date that, alas, has now passed. His piled-up troubles seem more a matter of inattention than intent — especially his failure to apply the rule of law in banking — and his recent televised attempts to explain himself give off the demoralized vibe of somebody just sadly going through the motions.

Anyway, events are in the driver’s seat, not government officials. We’re in the Koyaanisqatsi zone now — everything is out-of-balance from our financial operations to our geopolitical relations to the state of nature around the planet. Too many stresses have built at too many stress-points and a palpable fear judders through the wireless waves that something has to break. Oddly, political cracks appeared this month in two of the least-expected places: Sweden and Turkey. WTF? I wonder a little now if the revelations of Edward J. Snowdon about the American Security apparatus will bring on a wave of street protests in Washington DC on the Fourth of July. Maybe I’m just channeling my own dim memories of 1969, but this historical moment has a similar tingle. We know that the amalgamated gun nuts are already planning what they’ve advertised as an “armed march” across the nation’s capital. Frankly, I’m kind of glad that they’re doing this. The government needs to be reminded that there are already enough small arms loose in America to temper its cloddish excesses. The time is ripe for others to join in a larger Fourth of July demonstration.

Most satisfying would be a Washington march by college loan debt slaves terminating in a bonfire of the loan contracts on the Ellipse. I keep waiting for the “magic moment” when millions of these poor swindled young grads will send the message thundering through Facebook and Twitter that they are done paying the inflated price for their useless degrees in “marketing” and “gender studies.” Aren’t you amazed that it hasn’t happened yet? (Although the default rate is rising so fast that a general renunciation may be accomplished without public fanfare.)

Meanwhile, it will be interesting to see if the US government goes after Mr. Snowdon, who is currently on the lam in Hong Kong which, some of you may remember, belongs to China. Does that ever have the potential for a world-class embarrassment? There’s less than a month before America’s big annual birthday party, just enough time for this story to build to an explosive climax. The government will surely have to make some kind of move before than. Given its recent tendencies to over-reach on everything, the government could easily screw the pooch on this. The 29-year-old Snowdon has the look and demeanor of an all-American hero and it will be interesting to see the reaction if and when federal agents haul him off a plane in handcuffs. What’s more, Snowdon made a clear, concise, and eloquent statement explaining his actions: “The public needs to decide whether these programs and policies are right or wrong,” he said.

You couldn’t put it plainer than that.

Snowdon

Edward J. Snowdon, NSA whistleblower

what? no comments? Where are all the “first responders”

    • Michael June 10, 2013 at 9:04 am #

The kind of people who comment “First!” can’t figure out the new format?

The only “first responder” I’ve found posted in “Out on a limb” Saturday.

As for what Michael wrote, give them time.

Haven’t yet heard it discussed what the really bad consequence of this will be.

Going forward, who from within the gov’t will be willing to risk all to “leak” information?

How would it be done. Certainly not via anything digital. Person-to-person? I think not.

Gov’t secrecy is going to be a whole lot more secret than it already is.

From the comments I have been reading on the blogsphere, it would seem many folks want to feel that Big Brother is looking out for their best interests even if it means giving up privacy and personal freedom. Oh and that darn 4th Amendment doesn’t really apply if the private sector made $1.3 billion spying on everyone everywhere last year. The Neo-cons have won I fear and fascism is already here in the good old USA.

  4. Neon Vincent June 10, 2013 at 8:25 am #

I like the new look of your website. What amazed me was that the old look was still here only a few minutes ago, almost an hour after you posted this. I guess that’s what happens when one is refreshing one of the old pages, instead of going to the new frontpage.

As for the subject of today’s rant, I mentioned that environmentalists have been monitored ever since the very first Earth Day, when Tricky Dick sent the FBI after them. He found nothing, but that hasn’t stopped the authorities. For a blog that follows surveillance and police action against environmentalists and animal rights activists, read “Green is the new Red.”

Finally, the American People keep disappointing you. That’s because the most important thing to most of them is keeping the entertainment going. Screw that up, and you’ll get action. Keep the supply of Real Housewives and Jersey Shore coming, and they’ll happily let reality, if not Reality TV, go to Hell.

Now, it’s time to see how submitting comments works. At least I don’t have to put my website URL in anymore. It’s should be a link in my name.

    James,
I suppose you have already heard, but Ellsberg is calling Snowden’s action the “most significant leak in U.S. history.”

I always thought Eschelon was watching us since I knew about it in the ’80’s, but I think this is bigger.

The Patriot act level of surveillance started before 9/11 for corporate info on our habits.

I have no doubt that someday the big head computer will know more about us than we do, it may tell us who we really are. Who needs memories and a brain when a computer will reduce us to our most diminished common denominator.

Anyways, I always hope you’re right about them not knowing what to do with this giant net they’re putting around 7-billion people. Could this be the growth industry they tout?
With robotics reaching new levels of intelligence we are told that robots not people will strike militarily down the pike.

On another note. We should check out Elizabeth Warren’s plan to have the Fed loan make the student loans instead of banks and have them charge the same interest that the banks enjoy. Maybe then we can really compete instead of cheat in the world for now at least…..

        Hello Marlena Petrov,

I was reading about autonomous robots since the 1950’s or 60’s. Once they are released the only way to stop them is to destroy them before they hit whatever target they want. In the darker SciFi stories they destroy humanity. We are not there at the moment but sometime within the next twenty years it could be the end of Homo Sap(iens)! If this happens then there could be a real estate rush for aliens due to the easy acquisition of Terra.

Our friend Dmitry Orlov made the pithy observation that we, in effect, already spy on ourselves and “snitch” on others on Facebook® —which should be a real time-saver for such organizations as the NSA.

If this latest revelation doesn’t finally convince the Liberal class that Obama is most certainly NOT in their corner, then they truly are little more than the equivalent of abused spouses who cannot leave, with nonexistent self-esteem.

Perhaps it took a young, bi-racial Democrat to so easily put the final pieces of a police state into place.

    • Neon Vincent June 10, 2013 at 8:59 am #

Notice that no one, so far, has entered in their Facebook URLs, not even Aimlow Joe, who put in something, but it wasn’t valid. I’m tempted to do so just to be the first here, but I’ll pass. I don’t want to have a first here that badly.

Speaking of which, we reveal more than we know about ourselves based on our Facebook activity.

I wouldn’t characterize Snowdon as a hero, but it takes balls to slap your fellow Americans upside the head… Franklin’s warning rings true: trading freedom for security is a fool’s bargain. We will only lose both (Eisenhower saw this coming as well). The nation needs to snap out of its corporate/petroleum induced stupor -Mr. Snowdon is helping us see what is real vs. what we imagine.

  12. Nastarana June 10, 2013 at 8:38 am #

Thank you, Mr. James Kunstler, for that note of sanity. I have never been able to take electronic spying, including camera spying, seriously. Especially in the workplace. Please, does anyone think that the same incompetent middle management who blithely ignore all evidence of malfeasance and malingering perpetrated by their favorites will be convinced by photos of Miss Congeniality or Mr. Regular Guy with her or his hands in the petty cash jar?

If anyone is concerned that snoops may be reading your on line corresponcence, allow me to make a modest suggestion; consider including some bit of abstruse, boredom inducing content, according to your interests and areas of expertise. Discussions of obscure topics in physics or translations from ancient Chinese poetry ought to scare away most of the lookers, who, in any case, have not the time to exhaustively research all electronic traffic.

    • asda June 10, 2013 at 9:05 am #

It’s about building up a “6-degrees of separation” web of all your friends and contacts based on data mining techniques. Then placing you on the no-fly list, terror watch list, or worse, when your brother in law makes a donation to Earth First, the friend of a friend of a friend with a Muslim name buys a gun, or someone in your dragnet circle makes a donation to a Palestinian charity.

It’s not about incompetent middle management manually ruffling through your personal info, this isn’t the 70s. It’s about automatic face recognition software running through facebook and other photos tied to your online accounts, smart software trawling through any internet posts/emails tied to you and anyone deemed one of your contacts by unaccountable, unappealable algorithms. I’d start getting a bit less complacent.

  13. Being There June 10, 2013 at 8:50 am #

Whether the govt will or won’t be able to use these powers constructively is really not the full issue. Everything gets abused sooner or later and to say this doesn’t matter is wrong.

The issue I see as even more bizarre is the complete lack of questioning by the two parties in congress. They hate to read, they’re not debating anything in an honest way and they are way too immersed in making money and enjoying the perks of leadership from insider trading et al. to care about what this potentially means.

I ran across an interesting Bilderberg related article about our friend, David Petraeus this weekend.

Former CIA Director David Petraeus is in attendance at the 2013 Bilderberg Group conference to help construct the “big data” spy grid, which is set to become the new frontier of clandestine statecraft as Internet connectivity becomes ubiquitous.

      Say, LB,
Does this mean that Davey P. is being groomed for “a firm hand with military experience” to step into the Fuhrer role when civil society becomes decidedly un-civil? (I don’t see any other “qualifications” that would grant him an invite to this august gathering of potentates and arch criminals.)

Good to ‘see’ you, BTW. :o)

      • Being There June 10, 2013 at 10:14 am #

        Perhaps, O.

But in the big picture I think this thing is mainly global. It’s to shape global events that will mean the Pax Americana is most needed around the world. Never ending war means peace. Now WWIII will never happen.

We need the data mining to protect against the T events that we keep allowing to happen as we ignore the warnings, then everyone around the world needs to be protected from real national interests since that goes against the needs of the transnationals.

Read up on the Trans Pacific Pact…the destruction of sovereign interests.

There are no nations to be loyal to anymore, just huge corporations, that buy and sell, all we little people can do is siphon off some of that flow, like Nigerians stealing petroleum from the pipelines, hoping it doesn’t explode and kill us, or draw the attention of the corporate guardians

This seems like one of those “non-events” that have been popping up lately to distract everyone from the reality that there is no economic recovery. Politics are a graft onto the economy, a means of meta-regulation and observation. The more these “scandals” pop up, the more interest is taken away from the more sobering issues like an unsustainable debt, structural unemployment, and a business climate that resembles a toxic swamp. It’s been a “high time” for the last few years while we burn up our accumulated capital of the past couple of centuries to try to Keep Things Normal, but that will go away sooner or later, and the next drop off will be on us before we know it.

Visit the Leibowitz Society at http://leibowitzsociety.blogspot.com/2013/06/the-perfect-storm.html for more information and commentary on our coming collapse.

Watching the 4th Amendment go up in flames is not a “non-event.” Watching the rule of law disintegrate is not a “non-event.” And seeing the extent to which terrorists have truly terrified a pathetic population into handing over their birthright unquestionably is a scandal.

In 1965, with the passage of the Voting Rights and Civil Rights Acts, I really was born a free man in a free country. My dad, who died this past week, fought in World War II to help that process along. it has in my lifetime been shoved massively in reverse. Without equal justice under law and Constitutional guarantees, I can no longer have any confidence that I am free. I’m just acting out my days at the sufference of powers greater than myself that are no longer answerable to me the citizen. And all the AR-15s in the world won’t mean shit when they shut down the internet and the cell phones after we are all texted that martial law has been declared, because we will be an atomized mob faced with a highly organized killing machine.

Farmer: So, young fella; what did you think of the President’s state of the union speech?

Hitchhiker: I can’t say; I’m not interested in politics.

Farmer: Well son, I can tell you this; politics is sure as hell interested in YOU, interested or not.

The American people don’t care that they’re being spied upon. They’ve sorta known that ever since the Shadow War on Terrrrrrrrrrrrer started. That’s just the way things are, to them. They don’t care that they’re deep in student debt that can never be paid back; that part of any future money that might be coming to them should they find a job will be siphoned off for the rent-seeking banks and bill-collectors. It’s just how the system works. My daughter’s boyfriend is one of those indebted people, and he has no intention of demonstratng, because what’s the point? They’re not going to march in the streets because they know no one in government is listening to them. They’ll just hold on, hunker down, hope that they can find enough ketchup to cover the taste of the shit sandwich they’re being served. But as far as demanding anything different, they see what happened to the Occupy movement and calculate it’s not worth their time.

“His piled-up troubles seem more a matter of inattention than intent — especially his failure to apply the rule of law in banking.”

With all respect, Jim, you’ve always gone too easy on Obama. In precisely the same way we were told all we would need to know about the administration fronted by W when Chaney and Rumsfeld were announced as the new rulers, we had no need to doubt who is now in charge when Obama deferentially announced his “selection” of Summers, Rubin, Geithner, et al.

Obama’s attention or inattention is literally irrelevant. The rule of law has not been applied to banking because the President has been forbidden to do so.

    • bearfoot June 10, 2013 at 10:50 am #

It took “years” to realize that Obama wasn’t the messiah? And now he’s just a stuffed suit? It didn’t take some of us that long at all. And we’re going to let him off the hook as easily as he would let himself off the hook?

The sign on his desk: The Buck starts here. At some point, responsibility is mandatory and its lack, criminal.

    Our ethics we extoll.

    Keep us searching

    Keep us searching

    ‘till we’re on parole

It’s an OK new page, although I kind of miss the more colorful look of the old one. Oddly, I find most website “redos” these days to be less interesting than the originals, but maybe I just have a retro aesthetic…? The one thing that does really bother me about your new page is the way the two ads for your books, slide down and follow me as I scroll down the page. It’s distracting and annoying. Sorry to be the grump here.

    • Petroglyph June 10, 2013 at 3:32 pm #

I don’t like that, either. It’s like an annoying person saying “Hey! Hey! Look at me! Look at me! Hey! Hey, are you going to look at me? Hey!”

The new look is fine… sort of antiseptic, though.

  24. George June 10, 2013 at 9:49 am #

So the NSA is watching, so what?

They’ve been watching in some way or another for as long as the agency’s been around. By law they’re not supposed to watch Americans but they do when the foreigners they watch communicate with entities within the US.

The do have some impressive capabilities but the question remains as to how well these can be leveraged. For example, decades ago when I was still loosely associated with the agency there was a project that used speech recognition software to parse for certain key words or phrases in telephone conversations and then alert analysts. The test involved eavesdropping on the phone conversations of a then prominent New York real estate developer who was seeking financing for a project. The test was to see if the routines developed would be able to correctly signal when his banker called to say the loan was approved (or not). With some assistance the routines “worked” so I was told.

As for what there’s all the fuss lately, we shouldn’t be all that concerned. When I was in that line of business most of what we recorded and translated was judged to be “NILVAL” or, more commonly, of no value. And that traffic was quite limited and specifically targeted. All that’s being done is essentially trend analysis of cell phone, Internet and credit card usage. They’ve no doubt been doing this for a while but I’m sure they are far less effective than the Israelis are who’ve been doing this under the guise of detailed cell phone billing ever since that service was first offered by cell phone providers decades ago and nobody seems to mind that one iota.

Although it’s possible to do all sorts of eavesdropping, what you’re left with at the end of day (each and every day that is) is a whole lot of garbage that some poor schmucks way down on the food chain have to analyze. And in most cases they don’t care enough about what they’re doing to notice the obvious let alone the subtle. So, as usual, this is much ado about nothing; something that’s been given prominence on stage to distract us from what the end of the age of oil has in store for us.

    • Nastarana June 10, 2013 at 10:24 am #

My sentiments exactly. Include some abstruse boring content, and the schmucks will glaze over, zone out, and move along.

    • Howard Skillington June 10, 2013 at 12:48 pm #

You frighten me George. If you, having seen this insidious process from the inside, fail to understand how dangerous it is, how can we hope for our fellow citizens to awake from their stupor?

      • George June 10, 2013 at 2:45 pm #

        Howard;

I agree that this has the potential of being incredibly dangerous. Indeed, it’s quite possible that a mistake made by an uncaring analyst could set off a series of events that could ruin some innocent’s life as well of those he or she might be responsible for. But my concerns are not generally placed on those within the government but rather with those with access thereto who are able leverage the kind of resources that the NSA can bring to bear. That does happen by the way: local law enforcement agencies can get the NSA to set things up for them and, in effect, leave the room while they go about their work.

In my opinion the key thing to keep in mind is the fact that we’re now all experiencing this “end of the age of oil” together in lockstep, including the entitled one percent. Because that entitled one percent has thus far be able to retain much their power and status at everybody else’s expense, we’re also experiencing a constitutional crisis. We’ve thus far experienced three of these so called constitutional crises, the first following the Shay’s Rebellion which brought about the writing of the Constitution, the second which was resolved by the Civil War as well as the ratification of the 13th and 14th Amendments, and the third via the passing of FDR’s New Deal. And what was the dominant social condition common to each crisis? Wealth disparity.

This is where we are now and this is why we should be concerned by this moderately intrusive form of surveillance. Not because some low-ranking analyst might accidently ruin somebody’s life but rather because those who do the dirty work for the entitled one percent have and will continue to do everything they can to maintain or improve their status of those they serve relative to other so entitled minorities in any other country or the rest of us irrespective of any code of honor, rule of law or system of morality. If you want to see an extreme example of what could befall us, look only to Syria where their entitled one percent is laying waste to the whole country in an attempt to maintain its wealth and status.

And don’t you dare say it can’t happen here! Before this is all over it can and it will.

        • Howard Skillington June 10, 2013 at 4:56 pm #

I agree entirely with that George – just can’t reconcile it with your earlier message, which seemed to take the position that we shouldn’t worry about any of this stuff.
Assuming we’ve found common ground here, I would still go beyond your admission that this large-scale surveillance may destoy individual lives. I believe that this, alongside HSA contingency plans for martial law – with them deciding upon the contingency – virtually assure the destruction of American Democracy when the economy collapses, banks turn depositors away, and all Hell breaks loose.

Interesting that this is erupting just as Bradley Manning’s Kangeroo Kourt farce gets underway. Due process is dead when the defence isn’t allowed to submit a defence because it’s too classified. I’m reminded of an excellent old Australian film “Breaker Morant” about a rigged court marshal which, ironically, was used to teach us Officer Cadets military law. I’m more concerned that you about the odds of governmental misuse of massive amounts of metadata. I think a great deal of harm is possible and that the intelligence machine is not yet as incompetent as we might hope.

Alas, we’ll see. Nice new format.

    • Nastarana June 10, 2013 at 10:31 am #

In Australia it might not be. In Australia, numerous warnings about intent to fly airplanes into large buildings might even have been heeded by those in power.

As one of our lesser known and more intelligent public intellectuals said years ago (I paraphrase), in the USA the general incompetence [in high places] is taken for granted by everyone over the age of 12.

I run a local foods website here in Miami. Local food exploded down here about 2 years ago, with little expansion this year. My conclusion for the reason it hasn’t grown as fast: local food means people must prepare meals from scratch. Easier to pay far more and get the “barely edibles” from the grocery store, big box, or restaurant.

Still, I’m happy it has grown: it’s much easier to get actual food now.

I would absolutely avoid any armed protests, but unarmed protest is a great idea.

Of course we’re being surveilled. When has the class of people that controls the governments and money not used technology to their advantage. In the current situation, I believe it is being used to anticipate trends rather than pick on individuals. That is not to say that if some individuals are dumb enough to broadcast their criminal plans they won’t be made an example of. I believe it is more likely that communication technology is being used to track efforts to organize against governments.

We are pretty rapidly losing our grip on what it takes to maintain modern living. There is bound to be a huge backlash.

More people than we know what to do with. Where do you put them? They have to stand, sit, kneel, or kowtow somewhere.

Interesting knock-on effects of the Stasi state to consider:

1.) If one knows they are being surveilled, are they more likely to toe the gum’mint line and not make waves or discuss the obvious predicaments that the gum’mint would rather not have revealed in public discourse?

2.) What is the procedure for punishing those who openly decry the status quo? The prosecution of the persecution of Mr. Snowdon should be most instructive. Bellicose bellowings are already emanating from the halls of the haughty in Washintoon about info handed to the Chinee enemy and hasty extradition of the treacherous perp.

3.) There can be no faster way to lose the trust of those that are paying attention than for a secret spying agency to tell them: “Yes, we have collected all your information [and will continue to gather it], but don’t worry, we’ll use it wisely and only to catch the bad people. Really, trust us.”

4.) The denizens and blabbing-heads of the Heritage Foundation are sleeping very soundly at night, knowing that this spying program is keeping them safe. (If that doesn’t tell you something, you’re not listening.)

It did not actually take “years” to figure out that Obama was another empty suit like GWB. If you were paying attention on the day he was sworn into office you would have known. When he said in his inaugural address that he would no longer have lobbyists in government, at the SAME TIME that lobbyists were being sworn into office, you would have to conclude that he was either lying or incompetent. Perhaps both. Or perhaps just in the pocket of corporate interests, like all other politicians these days.

I am constantly amazed that the poor don’t rise up and throw off their overlords. Apparently having nothing left to lose doesn’t make you more free to act.

    • BleatToTheBeat June 10, 2013 at 12:47 pm #

Throwing off one’s overlords isn’t the same activity as pulling off a tick. How is it going for the Syrian rebels today? Are they not actively seeking assistance? Would the American public readily offer assistance to protestors on the front lines in Washington D.C.?

Let us not forget that the current ratio of “agents” to citizens in the US is approx 1 to 40,000. Whereas at the height of its power the Stasi had one agent for every 170 citizens. They employed thousands of civilian informers who were motivated by the very real threat of simply being “disappeared” someday. That said–people here need to keep their eyes and mouths open. I live in a small town where membership in the wrong party can cause you all sorts of minor to major inconvenience barely traceable to a source. It can happen on a grand scale with the aid of the “miracle” of the digital world.

I have avidly read and agreed with most everything you’ve posted on the Internet for many years, and gratefully stipulate that you are right far more often than wrong, and certainly more often than me. I do, however, have one minor criticism to make, because I prefer my heroes to be flawless & if you could just fix this one little item then you would be damned near perfect.
I think we all have a sort of “real live world” model in our head , call it a personal world view alogrithm, with which we manufacture scenarios of ‘what is’ or ‘what happens next?’ or ‘what might I do to fix this or that’ . The raw data fed into this modeler comes from whatever information manages to reach us through the filters of our various senses, plus earlier results produced by the model itself.
Some folk’s models work amazingly well (they’re smart) and others’ run very badly (dumb) but NO ONE’S modeling apparatus dependably produces accurate forecasts every time. Even very smart people can make astoundingly dumb mistakes (e.g. we have Einstein largely to thank for the horror of atomic bombs and their offspring.)
Either way, and in every case, the world views produced by our inner ponderings are delusional. They have no reality outside the confines of our craniums, and even on the inside they’re just a bunch of neurons firing away like some maniacal grand finale of cognitive 4th of July pyrotechnics.
My point is that the real world runs as it runs, and we merely play catch up with the delusions produced by our less-than-perfect world view modeling efforts.
If some folks choose to complacently take the real world as it comes at them , because they know from experience that their ‘internal modeling equipment’ is no damn good & is mistaken or inadequate most of the time , then who are we to ridicule them ? Are they dumb? Are they ‘low-lifes’ ? Are they covered with tatoos and full of controlled substances ? In many cases yes they are , but they are no more delusional than us smart people (as we like to think of ourselves.) It’s just that our delusions (on the average) have proved out to be more ‘real world accurate’ than their delusions.
In the end this fact is just another part of reality , making those people just other elements of the real world that we have little choice but to live in. We should model that to see if there aren’t ways to help them have better delusions, by which I mean to say ; more like mine.

    • Karah Sicily June 10, 2013 at 12:09 pm #

“we have Einstein to thank for the horror of atomic bombs”

I don’t agree with crediting any one person or EVENT as the source of all subsequent events…unless they’re a God entity. Einstein was a scientist and worked with other scientists to develop the technologies which have been abused by others – their sponsors.
Like what is going on now with the whole “privacy crisis” which isn’t much of a crisis in my personal view. Everyone should be able to realize that people can only know things about you that you put out there. The delusion is that people put stuff out in ALL formats they think will never be discoverable by God or legal teams (man). As long as there is a record of something there is means for discovery. Once you share a secret, it’s no longer a secret.

On the surface, Mr. Snowden is a very young man who has had a series of misfortunes in his life one of which is working for a U.S. government contractor with a controversial political and social history. He’s obviously smart about what he’s studied, IT, but he hasn’t really looked deeply into the organizations he’s decided to join in his life. He likes to take risks. Probably, he idolizes Julian Assange.

I would point out that argumentum ad hominem isn’t traditionally regarded as a very respectable debate tactic, but you’ve already chided me for using fancy words, and I don’t want to get on your bad side.

        • Howard Skillington June 10, 2013 at 5:01 pm #

No, I don’t think you were, Doug. I think you were just on your own impertinent jag – perhaps reading from an old, unpublished thesis.

          • Petroglyph June 10, 2013 at 6:35 pm #

Howard, your principal issue is that you are an asshole.

For some strange reason you see yourself here as Kunstler’s blog sheriff, administering nasty little verbal slaps – with some fancy vocabulary thrown in – to anyone who you think has written something too long, or not particularly relevant.

Complaints about the length of someone’s post, or its relevance as you see it, are NOT PERTINENT to NSA surveillance or Edward Snowden. Kunstler doesn’t need your sniffy indignation about things which should be of no concern to you. If it doesn’t add to the conversation for you, just scroll past it.

Wow…this definitely warrants the title of “Clusterfuck”.
Like all the wires behind ones desktop computer.
I’ve gotten away from all that mess.

    I like the new layout…so far…

I especially like being at the top of Kunstler’s hate mail…yes…I’m THAT lady!

Now, if we can get back to more important issues…like…why can’t we get a nice picture of Kunstler’s girlfriend and not just his dog and cat and garden and everything ELSE personal to him but that ONE important person in his life? Oh…there’s that nasty feeling called shame that might have something to do with it and ties nicely into the whole “let people decide what anything is” theme for today.

Here’s a lead of scholarly research articles I came across from watchin’ a Guy Mcpherson vid just last night. Dr. Mark Cochrane spoke during a Q and A session after Guy’s circuit speech and had some very interesting things to say and the research cred to back it up. Anyhow, I’ve taken to reading this type of material over simply listening to or reading the typical blogger missives, save a few favorites. The blogosphere is becoming tiresome, resembling mostly an echo chamber for the some old recycled gripes, but I suppose it still has its benefits. Here are the links for the vid and the website of selected articles. If you’d like to get an aural feel for Cochrane before reading his work, skip to 31:30 of the vid below. He’s in agreement with Mcpherson generally, but digs deeper into the science. Instead of a 5-year deadline for Northern Hemisphere collapse, he suggests a longer emergency, if you will.

Moderation is often misapplied on the web. The whole idea about the Internet is the immoderate use of words and information. Everyone is encouraged to participate if so moved. Moderation can’t be legislated because it is personal to the individual. If everyone was “moderate” about a topic then we wouldn’t have websites like this one. I think you’re in the wrong place.

“…more a matter of inattention than intent.”

Jim, you have been behind the curve on Obama since you voted for him. You are still too willing to give him the benefit of the doubt. (For the record, I am apolitical and do not vote.)

His intent, of course, can only be a matter of conjecture; so your opinion is just as valid as mine. But there is evidence he was indoctrinated and trained in his youth on how to bring this nation to its knees and convert it to a socialist paradise. “Community activist,” his former role, is a euphemism for Alinski Dirty Fighter. Granted, he might have gone into office with some good intentions (such as closing Gitmo); but if so, he apparently is too cowardly to act on them.

On the subject of “behind the curve,” I still don’t know why you ridicule gun owners and 2nd amendment activists (though I do agree that marching on D.C. is a stupid and dangerous idea). A year ago, you would have poked fun at those of us who think massive NSA surveillance has been happening all along. And now believe this same government would not disarm law-abiding citizens so it can further oppress us?

    • Jaego June 10, 2013 at 12:28 pm #

Sometimes causing some trouble with someone saves a hell of a lot later on. There is going to be civil war if the Government tries to take our guns – as they plan to. Obama plans to sign the U.N ban on small weapons in August. He should reconsider that – if he wants Peace. Maybe a march might help him to reconsider.

Could you be more specific about what you disagree with?

  51. Piper Michael June 10, 2013 at 12:38 pm #

    James,
Unlike some others, I don’t like it…. sorry… too bland, I miss your header graphics at the top… it doesn’t look like ‘you’…

But, that’s just me I suppose, maybe its still ‘under construction’?

My brother in law, didn’t think it was a ‘bad thing’ for the Democratic party to be pulling illegal shit, in what we term ‘Chicago style’ politics. He thought it was righteous because the Democrats were the righteous ones. But, if Republican’s pulled the same stunts, it would be an act worthy of the death penalty.

I asked him if he thought that was somewhat unfair… “No, because, we’re ‘RIGHT’ and they’re ‘WRONG’….

I asked if it mattered whether it was a right boot or a left boot on our necks… No Response… But, his eyes went wide open, and I think, for the first time, I got through to him…

“Don’t you understand the ideologies of both parties end up the same way? With a few guys owning everything and proclaiming themselves BOSS?”

“But this is America… ” Jim said… “That’s what the Jews said about Germany” I said….

“National Socialism, was a combined ideology… it was neither communist nor fascist, it was both, in one. It was the ideology of practical rich and powerful people who wanted total mind control… that is what money is Jim, power and control. That’s what its all about. Its not a game of left versus right, its a game of haves versus have nots. They have it, and they don’t want you to get it. The problem is, there are too many of us, and that destroys ‘their’ resources… you see, they, think they own planet Earth. In order for them and their children to live in luxury, they will have to reduce the rest of us to poverty, that’s called the Zero Sum Game. Earth is a Zero Sum game, you can’t burn that oil in your engine twice, mother nature sets the rules, and she is a bitch.”

“So what do you think has to happen, in order for the rich people to remain ‘rich’ and ‘powerful’, into the future?”

He thought about it… and eventually his eyes went wide… “You mean?” I smiled… “Do you get it now? How many people do you think they’re gonna have to kill so that their children inherit the Earth?”

“Oh my God… you mean like… Revelations?”
“Call it what it is Jim… the NAZI’s are here too.”

I smiled, another sleeper has awakened.

    • Jaego June 10, 2013 at 12:56 pm #

And who were the ones to take on this band of thieves, the International Bankers? The Nazis. Maybe they were no better, just a rival gang of thieves? Perhaps – they certainly had designs on the Slavic Lands. But they were FOR their People in a way the Bankers and their Communist spawn simply weren’t and aren’t.

Remember, the Third Way is neither Capitalist or Communist but between and above both. The higher apex of the triangle. Higher? Why? Because it focuses on Man and his needs rather than just the accumulation of money as in Capitalism or State Capitalism (Communism) – both of which are just tools of the Plutocrats.

As the old Czeck joke says: Under Capitalism, man oppresses man. Under Communism it’s the other way around. There has to be something better. There is. Look at Japan: neither Capitalist nor Communist but both and neither. They are free to use both because they are neither.

    • ray johns June 10, 2013 at 5:39 pm #

Piper Michael, You might also want to ask if it matters whether the jackboot is private or public property. If the government can overreach its power over privacy rights then how more easily can private corporate power do it? Our government has a built in checks and balancing system that has prevented any slippery slope towards a totalitarian state like in Stalin’s Soviet Union or Adolph Hitler’s Nazi Germany of the 1930’s. (James Madison’s checks&balancing system has also prevented any slippery slope to the ‘left’ or any sustained progressive liberal reform movement .) It has allowed the eclipse of civic spaces once occupied by individuals and local, voluntary community associations and the dominance of corporate power and wealth. Who watches the corporate watchers if not representative government? The question haunting modern representative democratic government is ‘qui observat corporatum vigilum’ ?

    • Vlad June 11, 2013 at 5:38 pm #

“National Socialism, was a combined ideology… it was neither communist nor fascist, it was both, in one.”

For some strange reason there seem to be this broad attempt lately to conflate Nazism/Fascism with Communism. The very basic principle of Communism was the abolishment and confiscation of private property. Nazism instead enlisted the rich oligarchs and their corporations into the system. This is why then, as now, the billionaire oligarchs despise Communism and embrace Fascism. The distinction is important.

The only thing more comical about just how much myself and other “weirdos” have been absolutely correct about most things, regarding the onrushing totalitarian montsrosity now being birthed before us, lo these last ten years now ready to slouch the final kilometres to Bethlehem to be born with great fanfare and the love of the enlsaved for their firm, morally upright masters, is just how completely oblivious Bovinus Americus is to all of it, even at this late and laughable date STILL.

I never would have guessed the power of normalcy bias, social inhibition, the discount rate and several other psychological forces that hammer these beliefs in place until some unforeseen critical mass occurs, as usual waaay too late.

(Hint: It’s ALREADY waaay too late)

But he ultimate conclusion is, individuals aside, collectively humanity is born with a genetic predisposition to love their own enslavement, and that modern Corpzi American leads this category, being now macropsychologically indistinguishable from the proverbial Good Germans (irony alert – this while under a Ruling Elite comprised of at least 30% Jews, proving God has a cruel sense of humor).

I was born and still believe in the words of the Founding Fathers, whatever their own faults and flaws they stand out as saint, if only when standing next to the 8000 year parade of sociopaths that have always and will continue to rule the earth until blessed extinction.

But they were wrong, dead wrong, about humanity, were Washington and Franklin. Hitler, Goebbels, Bernays, Strauss and Netanyahu were and are are all correct about humanity, and it gets proven more so every single day.

Enjoy 9/11#2 and World War III everybody. It will help take your minds off what has been stolen and of course, as Hitler, Goebbels, Bernays, Strauss, and Netanyahu could tell you, war gives meaning to pointless peasant lives.

They are coming, perhaps in as few as three years. Certainly this idiotic chimpshow cannot continue, even with such a docile and confused subject populace as Americaus Docilus Idioticus Domesticus, known more commonly as the docile, domesticated American Moron of Marketing Fame.

It’s all about environmental limits being reached, which also limit the increasingly hollow, fraudulent joke of an economy.

9/11 #2 and WWIII. Will it be fun for you? It’ll be fun for me.

I must confess I now enjoy seeing the direct spirtual descendants of Nazis, (i.e American Corpzis) suffer deservedly. My sense of justice demands nothing less.

Who deserves it more than Americanus Corpzius Docilus Idioticus?

What people were most born into freedom and now prepare to leave it as the most thoroughly enslaved in human history?

The people that deserve what is coming most.

    • Jaego June 10, 2013 at 1:30 pm #

Look a little deeper: the Founders, like the great Conservative Edmund Burke, were realists about human nature in general. The remaining Romantic illusions of Franklin and Jefferson were cured by the French Revolution. Remember, the Founders were against Democracy. Voting was only part of the Republican System – and it was only for the few. But I grant you they weren’t strict enough and the criteria of being a land owner was far from the best.

Recently Fred Reed published some much better criterion for voting.

The Nazis were Fascists. The “Corpzis” are Plutocrats. Big difference. Completely different ideologies. Of course, that’s assuming the Fascists live up to their National Socialism. The early movement did effect an Economic Miracle for the average worker. That’s a matter of record. Dude. Later after the victory, self seekers began to join the Movement in droves.

      Hi, Vyse,

Personally I like the aesthetics of the new format… but that’s just a personal taste thing. No accounting for it. About the text size there is a pretty good solution in the tool bar of your Browser, ( under the “View” menu in Firefox, for example) that lets you zoom the whole screen up to whatever size works for you.

Nice synopsis James on the dysfunction of American technocratic government. We are certainly in a pickle when the classical liberal ideal of the limited NightWatchman state now resembles a pimply kid, high school drop out with a serious case of narcolepsy. I still see a silver lining in these revelations that the NSA has been spying for years on Americans’ e-mails and internet traffic. It just could be possible that the NSA could act in the public good. I’m sure that there could be some real interesting and incriminating data picked up by listening in on the board room conversations of some of the biggest Corporations and Wall Street Banks on the planet, such as Exxon-Mobil’s ‘clean-up’ , cover-up plans in the Arkansas town of Mayflower where they had their latest devastating oil tarsands spill, or BP’s real plans to ‘cut&run’ as soon as possible from its Gulf coast oil spill disaster. Could this be a warning by President Obama to Big Business and Wall Street to watch their steps too? After the expose of HSBC bank’s lucrative loan dealings with Mexican drug dealers and its executives resignations in front of the U S Senate as the bank faced massive fines for its capitalist extremes , Attorney General Eric Holder’s new warning makes sense now that ‘even if it’s very difficult to punish corporations too big to fail for violating the law, it is doable’. I wonder what kinds of information might the NSA be sharing with David Cameron and Great Britain about Rupert Murdoch’s media empire and its own hacking of private e-mails and phone conversations operations? What did the NSA data mining operation find out about U S Defense Contractors , like Booz Allen & Hamilton or Halliburtan , arms manufacturer dealings to sell weapons to al qaida operatives, Iranian dictators , Syrian warlords , Somalia gangsters? We all know that in today’s Casino Capitalism of ‘growth for growth’ s sake there are no moral scruples and anything goes in the fight for the legal tender. http://youtu.be/QPlMmwOq7U8

Forget the spying, we all knew if it was electronic, it was monitored. Yes and it’s really easy for them to turn the microphone/camera on your device on and record from that too. Of much more importance was the Supreme’s decision to allow DNA being taken during a (for now) felony arrest. 60 Minutes ran a story some years ago about how DNA is similar in families. If a relative has had his/her DNA taken, they can find you quickly.

Going back to a Kunstler, I think the reason there is not relevant action against the State is twofold: first most of the costs of it are being borrowed. Secondly, we now longer interact much outside of work or structured activities. No is walking along the streets and talking to their neighbors who are sitting on the porch. Previous revolutions (intellectual and violent) may have been launched in coffee houses, but if you’ve been to a Starfucks or a local place, you know people only talk to those they came in with.

The revolution will come when the baby boomers realize there is 1. only a tiny percentage of promised money available to fund their retirement and medical costs and 2. even with that gone, taxes must dramatically rise.

    • Jaego June 10, 2013 at 4:46 pm #

And yet they continue to give our money away as if there was no tomorrow. No more aid to Africa and the Third World. Those place are hopeless. We have to save ourselves. No more aid to Israel or the Arab World. They have more money than we do.

And again – it’s not their money to give in the first place. There’s nothing about foreign aid in the Constitution. It’s just thievery of the People by the Elite to curry special favors abroad.

    • e sutton June 10, 2013 at 5:04 pm #

Mike, if you’re waiting for the babyboomers to lead this revolt, I’m afraid you”re in for a disappointment. Whatever idealism they had has ebbed, along with their receding hairlines and ever expanding waistlines.

The returning troops from our many, many foreign intanglements will gladly put their jackboots on the necks of any one who dares to rise up against TPTB. They have been trained well to do that, and are used to torturing and killing people for the scraps left on the bones the elite are done chomping on. Indeed, they seem to like it. In a perverse way, they get pleasure out ot it. So where do we see the “rescue” coming from? Beats me.

      • Mastman June 10, 2013 at 6:53 pm #

That is not a fair or even kind assessment of the troops who are used as tools and pawns in thse phoney wars.

The only reaon they are there fighting is to put money in the MIC piggybank not to win anything SOS as VM.

The people you need to worry about are the Black rock contractors or hired guns. When the loose their fat checks they will be available for DOMESTIC Duty that the Armed Forces are reluctant to buy into.

It may come down to a street fight between the two factions or three if you add in Obumma’s Goon Squad DHLS.

Try buying AMMO lately? You wont find any any place. Part of his endgame strategy along with labeling returning Vets as possible terrorist.

The ultimate reality is that this young man is going to meet with either a very unfortunate “accident” or the Chinese are going to capture and hold him for “ransom” until Obama gets on his knees and begs forgiveness for ever implying that China steals our cyber secrets. Either way this plays out, the government will be seen as our agressors rather than protectors. After this and other scandals, Obama should be investing in pampers, because he is clearly shitting his pants right about now.

The rest of it is at Miss Anns site:

    May 29, 2013 Ann Coulter

It’s been a bad few weeks for cultural assimilation.
Last month, two welfare-receiving immigrants in the United States, Dzhokhar and Tamerlan Tsarnaev, set off bombs at the Boston Marathon, killing three people and injuring hundreds. By the end of the week, they had murdered a cop and engaged in a wild shoot-out and bomb-throwing melee with the police.

Last week, a couple of ethnic Nigerians butchered a British soldier with meat cleavers in broad daylight on a bustling street in a London suburb, then boasted about the murder in video interviews with bystanders. (On the bright side, they did not claim to be princes and ask for your life savings.)

Also last week, immigrants, mostly Muslims, began rioting in peaceful Sweden — burning schools to the ground, torching cars and throwing rocks at the police. (Who among us hasn’t lost his temper trying to assemble an Ikea china cabinet?) ………….

Supporters of the West’s current immigration policies can’t keep ducking reality. So they try to shut down debate by calling their opponents racists, xenophobes, know-nothings and fascists.

I have a question that might have a small something to with all things Collapse-alicious. (This site being one of them.)

Why would I go to a site that cheerleads for [and is one of the lying faces of] a segment of the fine uber-menchen-folks that brought us to this current state of affairs? (Which we might surmise isn’t too damn Disney wunnerful, otherwise we wouldn’t be reading or posting on Kunstler’s blog.)

C’mon anti, it’s Big Picture time; no more twiddling knobs and throwing levers on a dead machine with no access to spare parts. Most of the lead characters in the long-running series have been killed off due to audience boredom and bad script writing. Enough now.

Yup, that just about covers it. Throw in bigot and you could join ’em.
Don’t get me wrong. Ann Coulter is a very talented woman. She’s in the top ten on the payroll for baiting, dividing, and shifting dialogue away from real problems that disturb her bosses and onto unresolvably emotional wedge issues guaranteed to turn any meaningful debate into a fist fight.
Ann Coulter, and you, ( and me, too, for that matter ) are all immigrants. Immigration is why we weren’t born as a bug chewing homonid somewhere in or around the Olduvai Gorge in Africa.
I will bet dollars to doughnuts that you have never conversed at length with a Muslim. I have, but most of of the conversation consisted of me listening, because every Muslim I have personally known was smarter, better educated, more informed and all around more humanitarian than I am. But I aspire.

The wonderful expression , ‘ Koyaanisqatsi zone ‘ is a beautiful picture of our condition !

And Edward J. Snowden surely has startled many of us plumb awake with his calm mastery of the nearly extinct art of clear & direct speaking on the fly. May even have inspired a few newly blinking baby boomers to roll off the couch and retire their lately acquired fear of authority in favor of their long hybernating old flame , lack of respect for same. I hope.

Anger can surely trump fear, after all.

Add a few righteous pissed off many millions of young people whose time is here & now and have already noticed that the Woodward & Bernstein types and fans haven’t done a damn thing for many decades now while the whole place has gone to shit … and who knows?

We could even go back to that quaint tonic, public trials in open courtrooms !! Howard,

May as well get the confessions out of the way early & admit that impertinance (sass back sense) accounts for at least half of my shipping weight , but in the sense of pertinence to the topic at hand I think what I wrote goes right to the heart of this week’s post.
Drugs, Tats, apathy and a host of other markers of antisocial resentments are straight up protest of the disenfranchisement rubbed into the faces of at least the last three generations of Americans. Governments and the corporations that own them have had just three things to say to each new crop as they reached the age of majority :
    1) Buy our useless crap at ever rising prices with your ever sinking wages, 2) Give us only your best and brightest, so long as they have no scrupels about screwing over their compatriots, and 3) Now the rest of you chattel go die in our wars and shut the fuck up !
The world view of those generations is typically pretty screwed up, but they are still the only resource that we have for survival of the whole damned species… and ridiculing them ( about anything) is not just counter-productive. It’s suicidal.
At this particularly interesting moment, documentation of what we have long suspected about the surveilence state has captured the next 15 minutes of the nations attention span. Clock’s ticking. We’ve got until next weekend, I reckon, to raise enough ruckus that the story doesn’t get pushed to the back pages where Washington wants it. The ones who need to hear and respond are not the assholes inside the Beltway (we’ve already got their full attention… though not in a good way).
The ones who need to internalize the message are the beer drinking drug toking, music addicted tatooed tens of thousands in places like Gezi Park and Taksim Square. Yoy won’t get ’em without showing a little respect… and a teenaged girl facing into tear gas and water canon has sure as hell got my respect. I don’t give a shit about whether a kid loves country western and stock car racing. I do care, very much, that he knows I appreciate his walking into a cop’s truncheon to defend our rights.
    I think that’s pertinent.

I understand the sentiments and the reasoning behind your post, Mr. Smith. However, these tatted, pierced, dope-smoking kids just don’t have the skills or intellect that it takes to ORGANIZE massive, coordinated assaults like the protests against Vietnam in the 1960s and early 1970s.

Look at the “Occupy …” movement. Nowadays one hardly hears a whimper about it because it takes tenacity and an attention span to persist. This kind of character is present in isolated individuals like your teenaged girl who got tear gassed. Isolated individuals ain’t gonna get ‘er done.

Fair Point. So where are all those 60s revolutionaries now? Oh, I know. They either sold out and assimilated into the status quo or burned out and died. Either way, even if the youth were capable of initiating a revolution why should they come to the aide of the complacent Boomer?

All of the corruption and rot we have before us today has been neatly swept under the rug by those 50+ complacent losers who saw every sign that things were going awry and did nothing, nothing at all to stop it. Why are they even worth saving, let alone revolting for?

        • Sam June 11, 2013 at 12:43 am #

Don’t be so sure the Millenials are incapable of organizing and putting their minds and bodies to something and accomplishing it. They’re doing it already, but it’s hard to see for two reasons: 1) Things have gotten so out of whack in civic and political life that us older folks can’t even see when they’re militating against it. 2) They’re still at a stage in life where everything’s possible and their needs and wants are few. When those biological clocks start to tick really loudly on them and they feel the need to have kids, do so, then try to house and feed them, get them to the doctor as needed, and give them decent educations, they’ll start to discover just how thoroughly they’ve been misled and robbed.

Pooh-pooh the Occupy movement all you want, but it did FINALLY get the idea out into the wild that the current social contract (basically, an ever-smaller segment getting ever-richer at the direct expense of everyone else) isn’t ordained by the laws of nature and isn’t what hardly anybody wants.

Finally, there’s a whole generation of us out here, between the Boomers and Millenials, who’ve been struggling mightily for decades now. We were born into a country that still had ideals, that was still trying to make strides in justice and fairness, hearing stories of how our parents wandered into great careers, paid their own full-time college tuition with some unskilled part time job, had to make “some” sacrifices but were able to keep a spouse at home all the time. Imagine our dismay when what we found instead was a Red Queen world, except that you can never really run fast enough to even stand still.

That’s kept us awfully busy, but we’re starting to get to an age where kids are finally leaving the house or at least getting old enough not to require constant babysitting. In other words, we’re starting to have some time in the evenings. Even though we’ve been subject to the most strenuous efforts to keep us socially atomized, and our careers haven’t been nearly as high-flying as our parents,’ we are of an age where we do know some people and we have some skills and we just know some shit. Plus, we saw it all go down.

Occupy was a first sortie. It’s supposed failure was just a media meme. They acted as if it should have been the whole 20 years of racial-antiwar-antipoverty-environmental-feminist protests all at one go. The next sortie could be when the Millenials REALLY discover how limited are their prospects. Meanwhile, Gen-X will have some time on its hands and some skills and (relative to the Millenials at least) some latent power. That could make things interesting!

          • UnstoppableFarceImmovableAbject June 11, 2013 at 10:56 am #

Sam, your remarks are well noted, but I feel like maybe you’re only talking about yourself or, at most, a small subset of people who are quietly developing their real world survival skills as the rest of this fake world crumbles.
How much more evidence does the average American need before that second sortie is launched?

Let’s be realistic. If the monkey hasn’t figured how to escape the monkey trap by letting go of the banana by now, then it never will.

The Occupy campfire has been pissed on and the Tea Party taken over by the mad hatter’s of the elite. These social outcries, no matter whether you believe the legitimacy of the participants motives, were representative of the best efforts of people from 3 generational cohorts to try and effect Change in the U.S. They were the best this country has to offer and were terrible failures on too many levels to count. So were the hippie protests of the 60s by the way, save a few civil rights landmarks, which were only offered as minor appeasements to reinforce the illusion of democracy in this country; meanwhile, the bandits still got away with everything.

The majority of people in this country are simply not capable of meaningful protest beyond holding fucking signs on a street corner, never mind the types of valiant protest strong enough to trigger a potentially necessary violent revolution.

To expect the few within the younger generations still fit enough and mentally capable of sacrificing and taking the thumping needed to save the assess of the redundant mass is just another injustice and example of passing the buck so typical to the American consumer character. Why do these atrabilious older assholes assume someone else should do the heavy lifting for them and their stupid kids? Why do people in this country need to be rescued by revolutionaries?

I don’t believe that many of the quietly prepared share the conflicted super hero meme you’ve alluded to.

            UFIA,
I bring a pocket knife and cut small pieces off of the banana inside the gourd and shake them out. Never let greed get in the way of “enough for future reference”. 😉

Yes, there are certainly those of us who perceive that the beasts have begun to cannibalize their own kind. As I’ve said before, it’s a race between financial collapse and total, iron-fisted control. Either leads down the road to destruction, but the business-as-usual paradigm (that the spy on ’em all hallmark is one aspect of) has the ‘added attraction’ of inviting human extinction.

Personally? I’m rooting for financial collapse to start the smartening-up process. It might be less damaging to the planet. (Our REAL infrastructure.)

Yes. Reality is far too much for ordinary people – and that’s just the way the Elite want it. That’s why they conditioned them that way. People have to fight an inner war against what has been put inside them. But most people have no inner life and have no idea what this even means.

America ceased to be a real nation in 1913 with the Federal Reserve Act. We are literally owned by European Bankers, few of them American or Gentile either. What to do? Dissolve the damn thing. Pay off our National Debt by writing them a cheque for the “number”. And then let them find someone to cash it. Or they can cash it themselves. Funny money debts should be pain off with funny money – not real labor, resources, and capital.

So the internet really isn’t a public street or highway where we have a real world view of what is actually going on. Most of us live in real places with neighbors who have a variety of backgrounds; some well known and others more private. However, there are some things that can’t be hidden in the real world:
who we are closely associated with,
    what we drive,
    our base economic status,
whatever is seen with the naked eye and that’s a heck of a lot.

Unless you’re a writer who never goes outside much, you’re in the public realm most of your life. People can infer a lot about you just from that. So I don’t believe in just taking whatever someone markets or sells themselves to be on a web page. I don’t believe our intelligence community relies heavily on computer data. We have to look at information as a whole and people as a whole person, not just what people want us to know.

Mr. Snowden is someone who went public because he really doesn’t want to be a spy anymore because he feels like it’s BAD now; he’s a bad guy. He probably thought it was “cool” to be a spy and be a “hero” especially since he has physical limitations from breaking his legs training in the military. So, in order to maintain his heroic ego (and possibly make even more money than 300K per annum) he is now an expat seeking asylum in some foreign no man’s land…leaving his paradisaic home and girlfriend behind…perhaps forever. Now he lives for some vague principle that people and their private information should not be for sale. However, when you ask the average Joe if he’d sell his privacy for freedom from terror? Yes! He would give it away in a heartbeat…as fast as a kid with limited job prospects offered 300K$ a year in Hawaii! There’s always a catch, isn’t there? Like if a guy should go for the hot chick with limited brain capacity or the brainy chick with limited libido. There’s a risk of unintended consequences to every choice we make. I don’t think these scenes fit into the realm of any kind of morality play. I don’t believe there’s any lesson for us. We either know what we’re doing or don’t. And here’s a kid who really has no idea what he’s doing or why he’s doing it. Even if our gov’t eventually reverts to some kind of fascist regime in 20 years and he becomes the head of the PRISM team, it’s not going to make any difference what he’s doing in the long run because, like I said, there’s going to be another compliant officer to take his place.

    • flooky June 11, 2013 at 1:39 am #

Move along … this is not important – karah
      ***

The slides report that 15% of every ‘intelligence brief’ that crosses OBAMA’s desk, originates from from PRISM.

Prism is said to be the SINGLE largest source, from a single source today for USA intelligence,

In other words 15% of what OBAMA see’s everyday, is from spying on the USA public and understanding what they’re thinking about.

      • Karah Sicily June 12, 2013 at 12:43 am #

Okay, so THEY rely heavily on a single source, PRISM – a bunch of internet traffic – that some kid like Snowden is supposed to sift through and come up with possible REAL WORLD applications??? Real threats???

It just goes to show how inept our government is and the president should ignore something that relies too heavily on ONE source that is not a complete representation of reality. It’s like the police getting phone calls everyday from people who are afraid of what MIGHT go down next door. The police or the president can’t legally do anything about it until a crime has been committed.

So someone please tell me what is so intelligent about this “intelligence” and why they have to make an example of Snowden?
We’re going to have to wait and see what the Judges have to say about all this and I’m pretty sure they’re going along with whomever put them in their seat. Like Bush, all “intelligent” people have to do in order to get him to act is find out where his weak point is. For Bush it was his Father and their heavy connections and reliance on the oil industry.

This private company is owned by the Carlyle Group, a hedge fund, in the business of mergers, acquisitions, and competing with rivals in business. This spy network gives them an unfair disadvantage in the free market by allowing them to spy on competitors, gain inside information on M&A activities, inside information on competitors customers, and potentially blackmail or extort competitor CEO’s and executives, congressmen, SCOTUS justices, or even the POTUS, all paid for by US taxpayers.
Why isn’t the media saying ANYTHING about this? This isn’t the Government spying, this is a private firm doing the spying and selling the spying network to the government!!!!

Well there are TWO kinds of government here when we talk about government, there is the WHORE government that OBAMA talks to or Feinstein, or McCain, then there is the

SHADOW-GOVERNMENT/SECRET-GOVERNMENT, and that’s the one that really matters.

The FAKE government that one that the OREO-OBAMA send’s platitudes to, … well that is 100% imaginary tooth fairy shit,

But the REAL government, the secret GUBMINT that is the BIG banks, the BIG PHARMA, Big prisons, big MIL,

Like NSA off-budget, … want to have a debate fucking OBAMA? PUT THE fucking SPY state on the BUDGET. I mean what’s the point of even talking about DEMOCRACY when the vast majority of real jobs and real decisions are all off budget. By this I mean unless you have are an ALIEN is that ALL the SPY shit is secret, even the majority in CONGRESS has no fucking idea how much is spent on SECRET-GOVERNMENT.

Of course the secret government has a job, its to keep the US dollar in currency reserve status, and of course the secret government has their own print press and can print ALL the benj-franklin $100 notes they wish ,…

So the BIG problem now in the USA is the secret-gubmint have MORE power and more money than the little guys, … that’s why I keep stressing about $200k salary for a high school drop out. Educated folks get $1M, … 100’s of BILLIONS of funny BERNANKE MONEY is passed to the secret government, it now stands for a majority of the economy,… the scale is so vast, that its a fucking joke that they have kept a secret this long …

  81. D Benton Smith June 11, 2013 at 12:16 am #

Yes indeedy ! What IS on those other 39 or so slides that’s so explosive that the same guys who broke the biggest leaks story in history would not even TOUCH the rest of it. (we know where they are, by the way. We just don’t know what’s on ’em)
My extremely strong hunch is that the other slides will show that NSA’s Prism extends into most nations of the world in exactly the same manner as it does in the USA. By that I mean DIRECT hard wired close-proximity hardware access directly into primary Servers in other sovereign nations. That would be complete with “Total Info Awareness” type software to analyze, store and retrieve everything about everyone, everywhere.
Would that be with or without their permission ? I dunno, but even WITH permission it would put those governments in a dicey position vis a vis explaining it to their citizenry… especially in advanced first world countries like France , Germany, Brasil, etc.
I think that is what’s behind the curtain, and I also think there is soon going to be some really massive blow-back from friends and foes alike.
This breaking story is still quite young and I, for one, I intend to stay fully tuned in.

    • ozone June 11, 2013 at 9:49 am #

Yep, seems that the residents of other sovereign nations (hey, I didn’t know there were any left!) are getting mighty prickly about all THEIR business being hoovered up by the NSA as well. Things are beginning to get edgy out there…

“If you’re not outraged, you’re not paying attention.”
(There have been scads and piles of situations, secrets and incidents to apply this to within the last recent decades, but we’ve been too busy being entertained by the teevee and acquiring crap.)

I can’t wait to see Kunstler write some commentary on the so-called Comprehensive Immigration Reform bill.

He obviously tends to have more affinity for those on the left than the right; not surprising, like me he is culturally a progressive.

However, he’s not shy about lambasting the left when it advocates absurd policies of the past.

Of course, since the sweatshop lobby is firmly behind CIR, another approach to criticizing it is to portray it as an offspring of corporate lobbyists, with leftist supporters simply being unwitting dupes of those corporate interests.

Good point. Who, where and how many.
These stupid skewed polls where they call up a thousand people (or less) and then make a major conclusion about what the ‘country as a whole’ is thinking is, to me, a [purposely] bogus poll.

Now, if you were to take a poll with ‘neutral’ questions that don’t lead the queried in foregone directions, and asked [let’s just say] a thousand people in 25 locales thoroughly scattered throughout the country, I might have a bit of confidence that they’ve tapped some of the zeitgeist of the nation. Has a poll of 25,000 people ever been attempted (other than a census, of course)? Why not? — Phone calls and temps for manpower are pretty durn cheap these days. …Maybe no one wants to know the real deal out here, or certainly not to disseminate those opinions… or, like me, refuses to answer probing questions over the phone.

Maybe it’s too early to tell.

I’m probably being overoptimism but the average person has not experienced what it is like to be surveilled and messed with. When enough people become Targeted Individuals they will change their tune. It is no fun being one at all.

They will change their minds when they realize that even knowing someone with alternative politics can put them in the crosshairs.

Maybe it is too early for the public to realize that you don’t collect this much data without using it for something and if a computer program can’t find a real terrorist it finds the next best thing. People who stand out from the crowd and resemble terrorists in superficial ways.

      Dogs with personality.

Maybe more people have to get messed with up close and personal before people demand it be stopped.

Don’t know if anyone remembers but a few years ago it came out that the UK govt planned to spend several hundred million UKpounds to install surveillance cameras inside people’s houses to keep tabs on them.

This program supposedly started with about 2,000 homes and was supposed to expand to about 20,000. It was meant to target “problem” families.

This was the plan of a leftie UK govt. The chief criticism from the opposition Conservatives was that it was too little too late. I’ll bet the ghost of George Orwell had a good chuckle.

And then there was a big city US police chief that remarked that if you’ve done nothing wrong you have nothing to worry about so what’s the prob with surveillance cameras in the house?

Imagine a general deployment of in-house surveillance. They’ll say that this is all “necessary”, that it’s all for the public good, that there are trade-offs, privacy for security.

Maybe they’ll claim that you won’t be spied on “live” without “court approval”. Or they’ll claim that none of the footage of you and your family will actually be looked at without a warrant. And that the video and sound records will be “encrypted”. They would be lying of course.

You can imagine voyeuristic security company contractors getting their jollies…And when they say that data is “encrypted” it generally means that it will be in the Ukraine by nightfall.

But don’t worry, it will be minimally disruptive, a technician will be around in your neighborhood and it will be no more bothersome than a telephone installation. You’ll forget that the cameras are even there. So accept it, it will become the new normal.

  93. rhino June 11, 2013 at 1:42 pm #

What the US govt was doing with this secret data scouring was/is astoundingly hare-brained and was destined, as sure as night follows day, to blow up. As it just did.

But I’m wondering why Snowden picked China, of all places, to run to. The Chinese PTB don’t like smarty pants like Snowdon. Snowdon may fear persecution and imprisonment from US authorities. But I suspect that his fate in the hands of the Chinese could be considerably worse.

Maybe Snowdon will come to realize this. I don’t know, maybe it will occur to Snowdon that his only option will be to cut a deal with the Chinese security services to tell them what he knows, to work with them in return for his “safety”. Or maybe it won’t occur to him. Maybe it will be a hard faced Chinese interrogator that “suggests” it to him.

I suspect that if Snowdon does manage to cut a deal, that he will rapidly come to regret it. I suspect that the “deal” will have highly variable and unpalatable terms, terms that dictated at the sole discretion of the Chinese depending on what they need or want. I suspect that the Chinese won’t go easy on him either, that they will be extremely harsh and demanding taskmasters.

I wonder about Snowdon. Maybe he’s one tough son of a bitch. Or maybe he’s a naive idealist. Or maybe he lived in a delusional fantasy-land where he is a fighter for what is good and what is right. Now, don’t get me wrong, we need idealists that will fight for what is good and what is right, that will sacrifice everything for the common good. So, what kind is Snowdon? I have no earthly idea. I suppose that we’ll find out soon enough. He’s got some extremely trying times ahead of him.

What comes of Assange-style or Snowdon-style revelations and data dumps? Maybe something good. Maybe nothing at all. What came out of Assange’s revelations? Nothing, that’s what. Assange is still holed up, stinking up some embassy or other, unable to stick his nose out the door.

What will come of Snowdon’s revelations? Likely nothing. A short-lived shit-storm and then next month it will start to fade from public view. And terror networks likely knew anyway that they were subject to high tech monitoring and behaved accordingly. Now they know for sure at least some of the means.

I suspect that Snowdon is finding that this whole business is already starting to wear really thin. Defiance has a heavy price tag. Not everyone is cut out to be Nelson Mandela. I also suspect that with today’s 140 character attention spans Snowdon will be quickly forgotten, that friends will become very, very scarce. And Snowdon will start to feel very, very alone.

I wonder how the young members of Pussy Riot are finding prison camp amenities. Probably not much improved since Stalin’s gulag. Especially with Putin running the show.

Have you noticed that as the economy is fracturing the level of national security is increasing. This might be expressed as an inverse relation ie.
as the economy sinks the level of security rises. Wonder how you square this insight. Maybe we should take the billions for our security and invest in understanding this dysfunctional world , but that might well be seen as too radical an idea . Any insight outside of the given framework which is considered status quo dangerous can now be tracked and appropriate drone like action taken.

The reason young people don’t march about student loans?

They are told it is “their own fault, their own fault, their own fault”… plus it’s not exactly the kind of thing they share on their social network page….

OMG… Defaulted on loan today… but I think it’s the banks fault, lets roll

Nope… it will never happen… now if the wrong NFL team wins or looses, all bets for a riot are off.

Americans care much more about sports then things that might matter…

    • Karah Sicily June 12, 2013 at 12:55 am #

The reason young people don’t march about student loans?

Because their parents and employers are helping them pay them off.
They feel privileged to be in debt just like their parents are privileged to have houses and cars for which they’re indebted for 30 plus years.
The Banks have successfully brainwashed people into relying on credit process every financial activity known to man. If they give up their credit worthiness then they give up on life itself and any hope they had in their degrees providing them with a salaried job will completely evaporate at that point.
Who the hell wants to work by the hour for minimum wage? It’s considered a shameful thing, nowadays, to promote an honest days work for an honest wage.

Ever watch the movie ‘v for vendetta’ and see the fingermen? (FBI/NSA/CIA )

They were ugly, nasty little men, but they all had one thing in common, they were losers.

The UK government took those men and gave them absolute power over the public.

Look to HITLER’s germany and see the same with the ‘brown shirts’.

Now step back and look at the USA, today on ‘take home pizza’ boxes the DHS/TSA all advertise for employees. These are $100K/year jobs, that give that person absolute power. ( Think fingering infants at airports. )

Now what the NSA does is exactly the same, take a loser off the streets and give him a great life and power over others and the ODD’s are he’ll be as loyal as a dog.

        • K-Dog June 12, 2013 at 1:53 am #

          Brown Shirts

That’s a concept we could all be more familiar with. Sinclair Lewis wrote a book called “It Can’t Happen Here” in the 1930’s. In the book ‘minutemen’ assumed the role of brown shirts. The book is part of my dystopian collection.

One of the driving forces behind the fascist takeover in the book was the chance for ‘loosers to wind up on top and run the show.

          Yes, dogs are loyal.

          • Friedo June 12, 2013 at 2:04 am #

Yes, dog’s are loyal to those that feed them.

Look at any of these DHS(homeland security), or FBI, NSA, TSA(airports, borders), ..

They’re always the same, fat, ugly and powerless, but give them a gun, and give them a nanosecond to finger-bang grandma at an airport, or sniff shit in some baby’s diapers with the parents in another room, and they have found heaven.

Now why in God’s name would OBAMA hire such people? Funny. They want ‘teachers’ to have a perfect record, and they talk much about ‘gun control’, but on the other hand they hire and give firearm’s to sociopath’s, bully’s, and just plain social misfits.

Yes, LOYAL DOG’s, … in a depression economy where most are on food-stamp’s and even more can’t pay for medical care, you have the bottom of the barrel getting the benefits with retirement that millionaires can’t dream of.

Well on one hand I’m kind of BORED of the FBI guy that looks like ‘Superman’, or the Idea that “Navy Seals’ don’t look like Jesse Ventura. Most Seals I have known look worse than Jesse ( alcoholism ).

Well its here, and its here now, and OBAMA was doing 4 years and go re-elected, and thus now its all written in stone.

So IMHO there is only one option, and that is to BAIL. I left a long time ago, … and PITY all of you that still haven’t figured to RUN LIKE HELL.

It’s only going to get worse.

If and when this funny money that the NSA/CIA prints becomes worthless then and only then will the dog’s quit licking their masters jack-boots.

Lastly, I wish to point out that OBAMA also is just a LAPDOG.

I think a LOT of people have quit pay the college loans’

Look at home loans the majority have quit paying, there are 5-10 million ameriKKKans living rent-free in homes, and some homes are out 5+ years on foreclosure,..

      There are millions of squatters’

Who say’s you have to pay?

This is all mythology here’s the deal, if you graduate and owe $200k-$500k, your never going to pay it back, even if you find a job.

I think a lot of kids have quit paying, but the system is telling lies.

Take another LIE, wait to collect social security until 70, … BULLSHIT collect ASAP 62 cuz, its going to end and quick, and those that WAIT will get hosed.

So I think a log of homeowner’s are paying and lot of old folks are collect ‘early’, and a hell of a lot of kids have figured out that college DEBT is a fucking joke, and another thing your credit score don’t mean fucking shit.

Get on with your life and until OBAMA creates ‘debtors prison’, just ignore ALL the MSM bullshit.

If and when the create debtor’s prison, then get out of the USA quick, but if you still there even now your fucked.

The irony loops upon itself indefinitely. So much irony – where to begin? The irony that this story is so old hat, that the data mining whuz reported 7-8 years ago? The irony that even then, everyone knew for decades about Eschelon and the *thousands* of acres of underground servers/processors at Ft George G Meade? The irony that these same asshole spys are *NOW* going to have to identify *THEMSELVES* as the highest priority targets? The irony that this “supposed staged/leaked event” whuz simply a ploy to keep the *REST* of them quiet/subservient?

The fact that they are now their own “weakest link” makes me laugh. The irony is that I caught The Falcon And The Snowman tonite, and the storyline hasn’t changed in 30 years. The irony that, even in that movie from 1985, they still contracted out spy work…

I’m not too shocked about the spy salaries – almost a decade ago, it whuz well known that the Halliburton/Wackenhut/(Blackwater)Xe/etc contractors were raking in $150k+++ salaries (off budget? Hahaha Dept of *1 million+* Homeland Security!).

As for the blog page responses – hard to keep track, really. Maybe I’m stupid, but when I refresh the page, I get no indication of which replies are new – so I have to re-read the *DRIVEL* (and it doesn’t save my current *position* in the list). I also don’t like clicking between “old”/”new” poasts (not sure why that function is even *THERE* – and those links are only at the bottom of the page, but you get returned to the top). Hard to know where your reply will end up (as a reply to *DRIVEL*, or a reply to the blog poast). NE-Waze – some semi-constructive criticism…

That’s what’s different now, … largely as SALON has eloquenlty pointed out as you and me know, that 50 years ago there were dark-tunnels under ft-meade, but under RONNY RAYGUN it all got privatized, and GREED through OBAMA allowed them to become the BIGGEST RICHEST GUYS ON EARTH. …

Nobody is paying a DIME. All this money is funny money. I think you fail to understand that the CIA/NSA have their own ‘plates’ real printing press to print an infinite number of Ben-Franklin $100 USD. They like to blame N-Korea, but the fact is the CIA/NSA is the biggest counterfeiter of USD currency on earth.

So fear not, the NSA-CIA can continue to flood the world with $100 notes, … so long as people accept them.

So your answer is Stalinism or Maoism. PURE GOVERMENT CONTROL OVER EVERYTHING. They want that too. The Government belongs to them. Stalin worked for the Bankers, at least until he told them to go to hell. Mao was funded by them in the early stages at least.

There are NO answers or solutions to the ‘problem’.

        US imperialism is TERMINALLY FUCKED.

Nothing can stop the implosion, … its all a ride, … and the ride will end when the FUNNY MONEY that the NSA is printing and handing out all over the world becomes worthless.

MAO/STALIN have NOTHING to do with the present, they’re dead. BUSH/OBAMA/CLINTON have killed 10’s of millions, .. so what, its been the normal forever.

But Mercantile economy’s such as ROME or the USA always fail, because they drop the value of their money to zero, and then farmers quit sending food.

Today on a continuum of benevolence china win’s, … and USA loses, that’s today.

Lastly, never forget that those that MAO killed were 100% supporters of the WEST, same now those who OPPOSE OBAMA/BUSH will die, …

But NOTHING can bring the USA back to its formal glory, … as the entire political system is has criminals running the government top to bottom.

If the Internet isn’t the Tower of Babel, then nothing is. I’m guilty as charged. We all are. It’s a trap. It’s a conceit. It’s an outlet to blow off steam, or to drag us down endless rabbit holes sniffing the trail of the ever-illusive Alice. I do not believe the truth will set us free because there is no truth. What people believe to be the truth is their own highly subjective interpretation of reality. The Internet paralyzes. The question is, did they know this early on, perhaps even before its inception, and have been honing it to that end ever since it rolled out on full force?

    • Jaego June 12, 2013 at 12:01 pm #

Huh? What’s your point? Obama was raised as a Communist by Communists and the way was made smooth for him. The ultimate grooming. Clinton and Bush came to power via other routes. Clinton thru ability and being the protégé of Carol Quigley, etc. And Bush thru old family connections.

You have an extraordinary ability to muddle up the simplest things.

Interesting read from Mr. Escobar. I especially took note of the extradition factors regarding Mr. Snowden’s certain charges soon to be carefully manufactured by the DOJ. Sounds like even if the FUSA decides to try and prosecute this guy, it won’t be able to get a hold of him to do so. What an ironic twist of PR fortunes for the government of China, too. Suddenly, the notion of whether they are a haven for voices of dissent becomes an open question? Awkward.

Assange turned out to be a fame whore; let’s hope this guy (Snowden) maintains his integrity so that more whistle blowers with stronger revelations emerge. That’s the only way this story ends up meaning anything in the long run. We need a long line of defectors/dissidents before the MSM distortion machine runs out of workable distractions. We need some top level people to speak out; until then this is all bullshit. Righties get to cream their shorts and holler about Obama without seeing the bigger picture and lefties will simply turn a blind eye because Obama promises not to abuse the laws while he’s in office, as if either points of view reflect anything other than a private hand job or courteous reach around.

I have to admit that I root for Snowden’s continued evasion; even if his motives weren’t or aren’t as noble they seem based on my perception of his interview and his articulately presented personal defense; it brings a certain type of private joy to me to see the government squirm just a bit, never mind that what was actually whistle blown doesn’t amount to much in the grand scheme. Somebody beside rich bankers and corrupt politicians need to get away with high level crimes just to level the playin’ field, no?

Yossarian refers to Snowden’s guts as his “secret.” They were hidden inside his flak suit, though pierced by flak, until Yossarian ripped open the suit and out they come. Yossarian “reads” Snowden’s secret in his intestines. This alludes to an ancient Roman practice of reading prophecies in the intestines of sacrificed animals. If man has been dehumanized by the war, then Snowden is essentially made an animal in his death. Not to mention that he has been sacrificed for some supposed greater cause. As for prophecies, let’s look at what Yossarian reads in his guts: man is mortal. Significantly, this event may spark much of Yossarian’s paranoia about death – to start. Its retribution, however, (and this may be why the scene is at the end of the novel), could be that Yossarian uses it as a way to overcome his paranoia. By some sort of absurd logic, knowing that you have to die and will die might mean you can stop worrying about it.

      http://www.shmoop.com/catch-22/snowden-guts-as-a-symbol-man-mortality-symbol.html

This says it all. It’s a message to the collapse community from the intelligence services delivered via Snowden’s guts. You’re going to die and will die, so quit worrying about it. Leave the worrying to us. These guys are clever, I’ll give them that.

Seriously? I am surprised so many people are surprised at the situation. Did you really think no one was watching? I am amazed it took that many years for them to build such a surveillance system. I actually thought it was in place 5 years ago when I warned my marketing and PR students about it. We lived through a very unique time period with free internet (free in terms of $$ and in terms of speech – I think both are nearing the end). I am pasting all useful content into Word or text files, medical, business advice. I thing the next wave will be in the area of self-health. Something terrible will happen to someone who would allegedly use some herbal advice from some website, and this news will spread, and then the government will proactively shut down all such websites. Or something along those lines. We just need a good story. Medical establishment is losing too much money off people who are not going to doctors.

What’s interesting is that now, when people realize the extent of the surveillance they are under, I expect that there will be more “heroes”.

Everyone is affected, every word is recorded, every email, every search query – then what do we have to lose? I call it a “happy face fascism”, although obviously, we are far away from the type of oppression people suffered under Hitler.

Lets hope this system will some day choke on its own entrees.

Maybe, just maybe people will stop being afraid and stop posting all this “politically correct” or “positive” garbage on social networks. What is there to be positive about? I wrote a negative review recently on tripadvisor about a thai restaurant in my town. I did not use any offensive language or insult anyone, simply described my experience and provided my opinion – a few days later I got an email from tripadvisor saying that my review was removed because it violated their guidelines. I checked the guidelines, I violated nothing. And this is just a restaurant review!

Let us not allow this pervasive censorship to take over.

Oh, I wanted to comment on the new font on Jim’s blog. Am I the only one who thinks it is hard to read?

      New Font

This is a classic font that one finds in REAL books. This is the internet and requires a different kind of font for the different kind of screen. However, many people use a Kindle that is made to read like a book with a special screen.

I like the Font Sizer and I think most people can change the font in THEIR browsers under one of the settings menus.

Everything is looking good and flowing nicely, thanks for the upgrades.

        And yet another test.

I believe this will show that this reply will go unnoticed by all but the most diligent of readers because it does not appear in chronological order. So, although it is written at 12:37PM on 6/16/13 it will appear directly under a reply dated 6/12/13 at 3:45PM.

If you post a reply to a comment written days ago (in this case, 4 days ago) what are the odds that a reader is going to go all the way back to the beginning of the week’s comments to see what new replies may have been posted? And unless that person has a photographic memory how would he or she know what is new without carefully examining every date and time stamp. Slim to none.

Here’s another thing about Jim’s makeover of the CFN site: Let’s say you have the Kunstler blog bookmarked as a favorite so this morning you accessed the blog to see what new posts have appeared. You scroll to the bottom and find that the last post showing is dated June 12th etc. You then click on “newer posts” and it takes you further down to maybe June 14th. Again you have to click on “newer posts” and scroll to the bottom to finally arrive at the very last original post. If the last post was a reply there is no telling where it may appear within the entire comments section.

I hope, but am not optimistic, that Jim will see this comment/reply and realize that this needs to be fixed.

  114. e sutton June 12, 2013 at 4:36 pm #

The MSM is continuing their blackout of news coverage. Most recently we see the Germans quite pissed off at our dear NSA/ Prism for their being the number one country spied on. You can’t find this news in the U.S. Americans are quite pleased and appear to be somewhat relieved to know that their phones are tapped and their e-mail sifted thru. 56%? Quite impressive, americans! When the anal probes are rolled out sometime around 2016, and the NSA wants to charge you extra for the lube, will you be upset then? NAH! Not when “America’s Got Talent” and “So You Think You Can Dance” consume every waking moment.

      Yep, fascinating
      UK telegraph nothing, guardian much,

I don’t see much in the USA, of course CHINA is keeping silent, as they don’t even want the people to know such technology exists.

I’m still troubled with JIM’s lead on this story, where he starts “NSA can’t correlate”, … which is a boldfaced LIE, the entire point of what’s going on now with PRISM(NARUS/PALANTIR) is that ISRAEL has sold the NSA technology that allows 100% capture&correlation, so JIM is one again, covering Israel’s ass … Sad to Say. 🙁

Exactly! Nail hit squarely on head! IMO, Jim knows exactly that Israel is holding the cards and to even suggest that a sophisticated data base (is that term obsolete now?) can’t put complex things together is disingeuous at best. The american people are being sold down the river and they are helping to tatoo the usp code onto their own asses. And they are happy to do this! WTF??? NARUS/PALANTIR of course are AIPAC(ISRAEL), but this technology uses post 2005 MATH&COMP-SCI to do machine learning, and generate real-time graphics as seen in any Hollywood blockbuster, ..

Why JIM fails to discuss what’s really going on? He’s stuck in the ‘world by hand’, his mind’s eye on technology is stuck in the 1970’s,

Jim has no intention to fight the enemy, if you want to fight the enemy then you must understand his tools’ for real, and you must be able to fight him with his own tools. Failure to understand the technology used presently would be a complete hopeless loss for those that desire freedom. Scary. I think people confuse Zionism with being Jewish, and it’s not the same thing. You are right. Jews who believed they weren’t part of “the problem” got killed. The Jews alive today who know better (like you) should be very concerned about the way things might turn in this country should the white, Christian militia ever decide to rise up and take control. Indeed, any non-white, non-Christian should fear the day this ever happens. History shows it’s not pretty.

Think of it this way even in 1938 there were Jews who told other Jew’s, don’t worry HITLER doesn’t have an IBM computer, he can’t use hollerith cards to track you, …Hitler’s men aren’t smart enough to know who’s a jew, and where they keep their money. Guess what? Those that listened to the KUNSTLER’s of that era who were Jews ALL died 100%.

Who is behind all this? The International Bankers. Who are they? Almost all Jews. Who had the balls to fight them? Hitler. Let’s not let a few exceptions blind us to what actually happened.

But yes Jewish dissenters are endangered too. Jews aren’t sentimental like Whites usually are. Look at what happened to that Jewish kid a few months ago. One of the brightest of his generation.

There are two PRISM programs, one run by the DHS, and the other NSA, … and they’re fighting over control of the new UTAH facility, cuz OBAMA doesn’t want to have to BEG MIL for data.

So now we know why the US government leaded SNOWDEN.

The building costs about $2 BILLION dollars, and then another $5 BILLION for hardware, and then another $10Billion for software, specifically the PRISM software, but most interesting about this new center, is who REALL get’s to control it?? DHS or NSA??

OBAMA has two PRISM programs running simultaneously the MIL (DOD) and the DHS, and there is a turf war over who gets to do the analysis, and thus that is why they leaked SNOWDEN.

    http://blogthetruthandrun.wordpress.com/2013/06/13/why-are-there-two-prism-programs-dhs-has-one-to-spy-on-the-us-public-the-nsa-has-one-also-hmm/

The PRISM program for the DHS was created by OBAMA so he would have his own intelligence, domestic and not have to ask the military, OBAMA ordered this software solution directly from the Israeli provider PALANTIR Technology, based in California, but owned by Israel.

Then Palinantir also SOLD this technology to the NSA,

Now there is a feud on WHO get’s to spy on USA citizens. The US-MIL of course controls the NSA, so OBAMA has to beg for data. The NSA was always very careful on a need-to-know basis about its ‘data’ ( crown jewels ).

Now everything has been ‘privatized’ under OBAMA, and the NSA has largely been cut out, sure they got a new $2 Billion dollar facility in UTAH, but its only for storage, OBAMA and TEAM DHS/TSA get to do the analysis. So now in effect there is a COLD WAR between OBAMA’S DHS and the old NSA legacy folks.

Following this paradigm you can see WHY they created SNOWDEN, and understand why the debate has been made public. Either way the USA public will be spied on, but WHOM will do the work,

IMHO I think the MILITARY is safer so long as we had posse-commitatus to keep the MIL off the backs of USA citizens. Obama’s DHS/TSA remind me of the guys in ‘V for Vendetta” the FINGERMEN, .. very nasty little men doing nasty stuff to the public.

There could very well be a COUP over this when its all over.

  121. Mort Kunstler June 13, 2013 at 4:11 am #

Computer programming for the Prism seem fairly simple..A knowledgable twelve girl could probably write most of the programs. The program that extracts data from Google and the email data would require some experience. We would let the CIA send the badass phone number and internet protocol addresses to her. We could let a fourteen year old boy print the reports on Monday morning for the CIA. We would need a huge number of computers with a huge amount of disc storage. The computer programs are consist ing of a large amount of sorting and comparing, very simple programming.

    …. well my brother K says …

A knowledgeable 12 year old with a PHD in machine-learning from stanford-university, and they have all been hired to work at Palantir next to stanford, just like the CIA groomed young GOOGLE at stanford back in the 1990s’.

I wrote an article about how they correlate this data last month, its largely machine-learning, SVM ( support vector machine ) most of the math is hardly 5+ years old, and Israel leads the world on SVM application to SPYING.

No a 12 year old girl can’t do this, … the problem is you have a million constraints and a quad-drillion pieces of data, and that take vector algebra light years beyond einstein, but end result is graphics on anything, like ‘computer graph the location of all tea party folk in usa now”, … done on screen above in red where all tea-party are at, … if you see a hot-spot, a DHS fusion center is notified,..

    http://blogthetruthandrun.wordpress.com/data-minin

This link will teach you about the math, .. the trouble is it take about 10 years to learn this math, … so the average developer is over 20, … but sure once its operational you can put a monkey in front of a PALANTIR system ( or a high school dropout ).

  122. Mort Kunstler June 13, 2013 at 4:19 am #

Buy father kunstler … why do they need to have this data??

PRISM is largely owned and controlled by the US Corporate mafia, this is why NSA has gone public, …

US corporation have run out of OIL nations to rob and people to kill we have now reached 2nd order crime where smaller targets will be robbed, there are NO more nations for the USA to rob.

Thus the intelligence on all world citizens is needed then you fabricate a reason arrest or a dare say ‘rob’ them, then you put them in privatized prison and charge their family, this is the new US corporate biz model.

  123. Mort Kunstler June 13, 2013 at 4:23 am #

At a guess, the government — and it could be the CIA or FBI or some unknown agency rather than the NSA — is getting bulk information from “fiber cables and infrastructure as data flows past” and uses PRISM to fill the gaps as not all transmissions can be tapped all the time and linking and collating the bulk data is aided by information available only from provider servers. While PRISM has gotten the focus of attention, it may in itself actually be among the least intrusive of the government’s surveillance operations.

    Dad, …

Yes, PRISM is the name of the system, and there are two systems, one held by NSA, and the other DHS, as OBAMA wanted since 2008 to create his own private army and private INTEL.

The software for prism is called PALANTIR, the Hardware is called NARUS.

The hardware is located in secret rooms at all corporations that have trojan horses ( free service).

The software for prism, called Palantir can of course be used anywhere including in Hawaii.

The FUSE HAS BEEN LIT, and its VERY Close to Der Leader’s FANNY

Yes, its been widely suggest that they say its ok for them to spy on us, lets turn it around, .. using advanced math and available google live tools its quite easy to follow Feinsteins every movement and McCain,… and even CAM them into the toilet room, the problem here is that in order to make the data available it has to be available, and it is.
The new math and algorithms are all ready in the public domain.

I remember years ago at physics conference NWO order leader GARWIN ( Megawatts and Megatons: The Future of Nuclear Richard L. Garwin) made a fascinating comment, … he said “WHEN THEY (HIM) decided to drop the BOMB on japan their only concern was it would tell the world it could be done” prior to this it was always denial a nuclear-bomb was called ‘crack pot’, after the USA had dropped the bomb CHINA/RUSSIA had one in a few years, because once the human mind knows something is possible then anybody can duplicate.

OK, now the cat is out of the bag, … everybody knows that with public google data you can spy on anybody 24/7 and at the same level as NSA/CIA, soon this stuff is on going be free service …

Everybody in the coming months is going to be mining facebook, and google, and twitter and using the meta-data to spy on ALL the politicians.

There are quad-zillions … of pieces of data, there are 3 billion pieces generated every few minutes.

    A 30 day load is million’s of tera-bytes.

To make this clear, the NSA has to store MORE data-bytes every month, than there are STARS in the UNIVERSE, .. now think about those and they are astronomical numbers.

This is why they had to build the SUPER big data center UTAH, they ran out of room at ft-meade.

I kid you not about the universe thing, there are only a few billion galaxys and a each has a few million stars, .. the NSA has more BYTES than any abstraction ever known to man,

But don’t fear, we have new math and data-analysis techniques that lets all that data be correlated for any analysis in seconds.

Poindexter wanted under RAYGUN TIA ( total information awareness ), well OBAMA got it, … and what he does with it, … COULD very well make him the ‘last US president’.

Post 2013 there will be no more elected presidents.

Those who worry about Palantir and spying on citizens have their hearts in the right place but they buy the false mythos that these “data miners” are uber-powerful. I’m a statistician and “Big Data” and “Smart Data Mining” are just bullshit reincarnations of Artificial Intelligence and Business/Consumer Forecasting … two dead, discredited fields that are suddenly “respectable” again. You put pretentious shit together with more pretentious shit and you get amazingly egotistical incompetence masquerading as Godlike insight. Suddenly, us statisticians have been turned into the New Deities of the next bullshit high-tech venture failure.

All these goddamned businesses like Palantir and Google just give the appearance of economic activity and power. Kunstler sees farther than most of you paranoids. He knows that the government is trying to appear all-powerful at the very moment that it can’t cut the military budget fast enough just to get a sub-trillion yearly deficit.

I live in the heart of Palantir country and I’m not a bit worried about them. The idea that the NSA and their private puppets (like Palantir) will go over petabytes of data to find baddies via amazingly sophisticated statistical extrapolations is such doo-doo that it’s laughable.

Kunstler’s resource message is STILL germane and accurate. Those who are alive in 20 years will realize that heating their house, getting healthcare for anything short of a gunshot wound, or driving more than 20 miles will be a luxury. Enjoy the time you’ve got left ’cause this nation was built on the scale of the car. People are built on the scale of the foot. You do the math.

      As ‘policy’, I would agree.
…Which leads this paranoiac to query: Why would a gum’mint want to give the impression of omniscient surveillance in an ongoing [and likely, permanent] era of economic non-activity/decline?

I would posit that it is very specifically to keep the lumpenprole from ‘organically’ coalescing/organizing a way of “inhabiting the landscape” (tm JHK) that is outside of and not subject to that gum’mint’s control. IOW, no skimming the cream off the top just by say-so. (Of course, a new cadre of muscle will emerge to skim, but it will be a legitimate way of ensuring bid’ness is done in a reasonably fair manner.)

It’s all in the service of keeping the civic religion/con-game of growth and progress rolling/limping along. Financial shenanigans are a prime example of the now tissue-thin remnants of this “system”.

      • ozone June 13, 2013 at 7:59 am #

Would I be off-base in concluding that a synthesis of both of your opinions would be that this is all just another smoke-filled, money-making scam with the added bonus of getting the gen’l publick to STFU and knuckle under?
(I mean, if it’s so secret that it’s pretty much verboten to even be discussed between those supposedly in power and control, it could be more fanciful than the Wizard behind his curtain. Snowdon as Toto…)

Not sure I’d go ‘all in’ on that notion, but it’s intriguing nonetheless.

The CIA/NSA has been dumping cargo containers of freshly printed USD $100 notes since the beginning of 911, to BUY the hearts and minds of are AL-QUEDA brethren.

        Money is NOT the problem.

I concur that the USA has limped along since NIXSON with non-sustainable bubble’s.

        But the STASI SPYING

OK, I’ll be frank because I can see most of you don’t get it, and most of you have already resigned to mentally go to pasture in your minds garden and check out of planet earth.

For 100 years the USA has raped, robbed and plundered the earth and NOW, there is NOTHING LEFT TO STEAL, now we have the largest standing army, and most people in prison, but there is NOTHING, … NOBODY to get the GOLD,GLORY,&GIRLS.

So my theory is the REASON why the NEW SPY shit is important is it lets them know everything about everybody, how much money, and where is that money.

So NOW robbery is going to GO on a MICRO-SCALE, now the GUBMINT will not rob country’s, but rob FAMILYS, all over the world, that’s why they have invented all these CRIMES ( child-porn, terrorism, drugs, … ) endless reasons to invade or drone a home to steal the land ( palestine model ), or steal the cash/drugs ( US urban model ).

The TEA party folks are sitting on GOLD at home and their homes will be HIT, ..

The USA has no problem about MONEY or BUDGET,… they can print that shit,

But the POLICE state wants PUSSY, STEAK, GOLD, and DRUGS.

Now Obama’s “FINGERMEN” ( v for vendetta ) will hit homes all over the country, … because STEALING is what this government has always been about,

Sadly, the fuse may have been lit, … but the USA people WILL never stand up to the machine, we now have 3-4 generations of welfare ho’s in the USA over 60% of citizens get gubmint check,

NO, the USA will slowly become a ghost town, but it may take a few more generations.

In the MEANTIME get the fuck out of dodge, because if you stay here, they will rob you blind.

      • Eleuthero June 16, 2013 at 12:53 am #

        Ozone,

The government wants to give the impression of “omniscient surveillance” as a balm to those who’ve given in to the manufactured fears of threat. If the NSA and their data miners revealed how ineffectual they were, the level of panic and outrage in the USA would increase hyperbolically.

Look at the Boston Marathon. Dozens of cameras all around, hundreds of onlookers … and it took ’em two full days to find a couple of Millenial doofuses who put a homemade kaboomsky in a garbage can??? Suppose one were really dealing with adept coverts?

The new “Threat Paradigm” of our Security State is more sensationalist bread and circuses while the greatest threats to our destiny … energy and food problems, national bankruptcy, and the sleazification of our entire culture … are footnotes.

      E,

With all due respect to your computing expertise, aren’t you leaving out exponential increases in all computng technologies since the discrediting of the fields you speak of occured..how long ago (you didn’t mention it in your post)?

That is my question: Considering the exponential increases in computing technology since “the last time” how can you be so sure it’s such a bust this time?

Consider: How has data storage capacity increased since “the last time” (since you didn’t mention the specific time frame, I can’t really make any educated guess of my own, but it probably has to be at least one logarithm higher, no?)

Consider: How much has computing speed and power increased since the time you speak of when these fields were discredited?

Consider every other thing that I, who is not an expert in the field, can’t think of and how those technologies have increased capacity in the intervening years and how that might increase the efficacity (efficaciousness?) of the overall fields?

Consider even how much more data input exists to analyze.

With all due respect, it seems to me you are making something of a blanket statement without considering Moore’s Law and the clockwork increases in magnitude in all technologies.

You seem so sure, but especially since we are talking bi-decadal logarithmic increases, even if it was only a time-period five years ago, we are talking of VERY significant (statistically and otherwise) increases that to my mind, would make a blanket statement as you make very iffy given the enormous rapid leaps in technological capabilities as well as input data, both volume and convenience of collection (which is at least an order of magnitude more convenient, if such things could be quantified).

If your answer is to rant at me, call me a liar and a dunderhead, please don’t waste your time and mine.

But if you have a science-based answer given in the same civil tone in which I have addressed you, then I very much want to read your reply.

      • Eleuthero June 16, 2013 at 12:58 am #

        WS,

I know all about Moore’s law but the problem is that conventional computing technology is now reaching quantum limits on speed. You have to go to optical computing to get another order of magnitude. Conventional chips have hit a limit at about 10 GHz plus or minus a couple of GHz.

Ask yourself this: If computing is so much more powerful, how come the rate of SOFTWARE innovation came to a crawl after about Y2K? What’s the great new invention of the new millenium. Please don’t tell me it’s clouds ’cause clouds are a REGRESSION to the old idea of a MAINFRAME where you stick your data in a central repository.

Modern computer science is an abject failure of innovation which is why they had to come up with “Big Data” to appear innovative yet that, too, is a regression to former failures (AI and statistical biz forecasting). The glory days of computer science were in the period of 1980-1998 and it’s been a whole lot of nothing since then.

        E.

        • Eleuthero June 16, 2013 at 1:02 am #

An addendum …. the chance of optical computing going mainstream any time soon is zero. The components cost too much and require amazing refinements like absolute smoothness of reflective surfaces. An optical PC would debut for about $50K per machine and we have ZERO manufacturing facilities for mass manufacture of the components.

Since other woes will intervene in the next decade, it’s virtually moot to talk about whether optical computing will come about. In ten years the American way of life, already in steep decline, will be about to go Mad Max.

    Where do I begin?

OK, first, Jim screwed up, it’s not Snowdon it’s Snowden. Actually it’s neither. I hope you don’t really believe that rat fairy’s name is Edward Snowden. Get real. Everybody at NSA takes on an innocuous anglo name when they come onboard. We let them choose their own handle, subject to review of course. (We don’t want anyone choosing Mike Hunt, :-)) (Female co-worker with cell phone to ear yells over the cubical wall “I got someone on the line wants to know ‘has anyone seen My Cunt?'”) We NSA folks are just like every phone bill collector you’ve ever heard of with names like Jason Palmer and John Watson. And, by the way, we call everybody we’re pissed at a “fairy” regardless of sexual orientation.

And high school dropouts don’t make $200K. Sure, Snowy is smart as a whip, that’s how he got his job. I hope you noticed his ability to speak on his feet without so much as an “umm” or a “like.” People at NSA make decent money but we figure they’ll be able to monetize all the private data at their disposal to make up for any shortfall. The most common way is to trade in the market under your Aunt Tillie’s name on non-public info. Hell, our operatives know the quarterly operating results of companies before the CEO gets them from Finance. Some of the guys have a field day doing this and it’s hard to get them to focus on their regular job.

Regarding the CFN site update, I’ll give it a C-. With Jim being into architecture and an accomplished artist I would have expected something more colorful and eye-catching. And ditto to something said up-thread…I’m not crazy about the font. It would be nice, too, if one could narrow the column width to one’s own taste without the sentences bleeding off out of sight to the right. Obviously the font size is too small and Jim has provided a button to increase, decrease or reset it. Better yet you could do CTRL + to magnify stuff on your screen (several iterations if you want) and CTRL – to shrink it back down.

What really bugs me is the comments not all being in order by date. Say you’ve read half way thru 200 comments and then come back the next day and now there are 300 comments. Some of those 100 new comments may be interspersed anywhere amongst the first 200 if they are replies to originals.

    • Jaego June 13, 2013 at 5:01 pm #

Yes, the replies are right under the initial comment and not with the new posts. This vastly reduces the energy of the discussion and dooms this Blog never to live up to its previous incarnation.

That’s the way I see’er, mate… long lines, poor font, contrast that hurts the eyes, etc. … it all contributes to the clusterfuck by fragmentation (as you say “reducing the energy”).

The good posters will be driven away with the bad, dooming CFN comments.

Looks like Corpzi Americka is doubling down on more laughable lies.

Going to the ol’ “Syria Used Chemical Weapons” bit again.

When, of course, it was Our Al-Qaeda Pals who almost certainly used them, just like last time.

I suppose they worked out whatever mistake they made which allowed to UN Inspector to bustOur Brave and Noble Boys last time. How pathetic would it be if we tried the same thing and got BUSTED AGAIN. Time will tell. Maybe this time we’ll have our al-Qaeda Pals just murder every Un Inspector until they stop sending them.

It’s just the breathtaking shoddiness of the lies and phony polls, once again indicating just what level of contempt our Corpzi Rulers have for their Subjects.

Couldn’t be any lower that they view us, as demonstrated by their PsyOps efforts, now approaching 1970s Soviet shoddiness.

On the other hand, are they not right to hold us in such contempt. Have we not rolled over like the docile dogs we Americans are time and time again for the lies, getting shoddier by the year?

Honestly, this one reads like a bad mafia movie.

Within hours, the Gestapo releases the next wave of lies, which knocks Snowden and the spy story off the front page, among other side benefits.

Is Obama in charge, or the Intel Aristocrats… to whom did Poppy deliver his message through adopted son Billy, Obama or the Intel Aristocrats?

Does it matter? Looks like we are determined to help Our Al-Qaeda Allies (HINT: it is unlikely they ever stopped working for the Bush Family and their Corpzi Court, least of all on 9/11) overthrow Assad.

Will the American Sheep even raise their heads and cease munching grass for a moment. Nope.

There’s grass to be munched and slaughterhouses to be visited in the near future.

Enjoy 9/11 #2 and World War II everybody. Maybe in as soon as 4 years time, based on the timing of the Boston Joint CIA-Mossad Op, as well as the marketing imperatives on new product rollouts.

Also, I’d like to concur that the new blog design is terrible, even worse than the last, which was pretty bad.

OTOH hand, maybe the lousy design will keep the sociopaths from poisoning the dialog, since they mostly specialize in getting rises out of people with nonsense.

Watching this thing closely, been in high tech since 1970, following the FBI/NSA closely since the 1960’s.

My opinion is that the GOOGLE/FACEBOOK were all funded out of my own Stanford. Now we have Palantir & Narus building SW & HW.

There are 2 prisms ( the system ), one bought by NSA, the other bought by DHS, its a turf war, the new DHS under Obama wants to report all data direct to Obama, the Pentagon DOD ( DARPA google tcp-ip … ) they want to keep the data under their thumb same-same since j-edgar-hoover.

Obama with his personal army (DHS/TSA) and Prism(Palantir/Narus) is now more powerful than any dictator in history.

Me thinks a lot of old time ‘constitutionalists’ are not setting well with Obama’s new ‘standing army’.

The spying is all sold by google, facebook, … et-al Its how they make their money, the US government isnn’t even the biggest customer for the spy data.

The NSA has been left out of the game, … its a war folks.

What is a REAL issue pray tell?

Our Der Leader (MY SON) has already told us, … never mind the NSA ain’t capable of ‘correlating’ the data, … its a non-story, … just another slow movement to gardening.

So what is the ‘real’ issue? Me thinks ophra, or kardashian, or jackson,..

Before JIM shutdown this site for comments, he was getting 600/week, but they were 90% from asoka and his avatars, … all with zero content.

Do you miss those day’s? Funny how JIM shuts this site down for 2 weeks and all the trolls left and seem to have found a new home.

Don’t worry the NSA story has been completely finished now, awaiting more release from GUARDIAN, but it may not happen now that they have been warned of prison.

Go back to ‘peak oil’ news? It would be interesting to learn what constitutes news?

I think the #1 topic here is fonts, lower-upper case debate, artistic presentation, and grammar nanny’s, … other than that, there is no content. Oh, comment presentation order, … well before it was linear and boring, and for those that tried to get through all 600 on their smart-phone it was hell, so I like the new format of putting newer comments on top.

      what’s a mother to do?

      • JoeBob June 13, 2013 at 8:01 pm #

356 comments and it’s just Thursday. Could make 600 yet.

A right good portion of the 356 are from asoka and asoka’s avatars, some sent from the other side (where asoka is still dead).

Asoka’s comments this week do not have zero content either. They are on a par with the non-asoka comments.

        • Son of Kunslter June 13, 2013 at 8:34 pm #

At no time in human history did a ‘asoka’ comment ever have content. I concur the avatar is intelligent, but also he reminds me of a bot. You know they flood these sites these days’ with bot’s and the bot’s can articulate well,

Shit 40 years ago on UNIX ‘Elisa’ had most people fooled, and it passed the ‘turing test’.

Now today they have automated bot’s flooding these sites to make ‘good people’ stay away.

It’s not hard to detect a bot it was done in blade-runner. When asked what are we eating, just say “I think we’ll have soup from a boiled child, and maybe some rodent salad”, … your bot will generally carry on like all is fine, … real-people have sense of outrage, … bot’s dont’.

” I maintain that there is an inverse correlation between the technical abilities of the government to harvest data and their competence to use it for anything. ” – JAMES HOWARD KUNSTLER

    ***

Ok, people here TALK about the GREAT LIE, GRESHAMS LAW, …

BUT note in CONTEXT here JAMES(king) is referring to the USA government, but anybody that knows anything about NSA/PRISM, knows that the SYSTEM is NARUS+PALANTIR, and it ALL came from ISRAEL.

Now JIM knows quite well that the ISRAELI government is NOT incompetent. While I agree that US gub is a bunch of village idiots the MOSSAD is not.

Thus what the fuck is James doing here?

  141. Son of Kunslter June 13, 2013 at 8:48 pm #

Ok, so I’ll play rhetoric with JAMES, so they buy the best analysis spy software for gathering (NARUS) and analysis ( palantir),

Now what do the FED’s do with it? Why they hire a high-school donut dealer, .. and give him the keys.

But that is NOT the issue,

See the DHS and local cop shop also have access to this data, and they’re using it to shake down ordinary people all over the USA.

    http://blogthetruthandrun.wordpress.com/2013/05/22/mining-social-media-for-intel-local-law-enforcement-now-247365-reading-all-facebook-twitter-if-theyre-going-to-spy-then-feed-them-shit/

Study the above link carefully this was written in early May 2013, long before the story about PRISM being release, in this story the SAME data is being sold by Facebook at every COP shop in the USA. WHY? Because the cops are using the data to ROB folks left and right.

Does jim care? Hell no, .. he see’s as proof of his world-view that society is imploding, …

But JIM has given up on anger, which is interesting, he seems to take a BAMBIST approach on this topic, and sit back and watch and not get all huffed and puffed.

But there is MORE to it than that, because JIM constantly emphasizes that the governments power is artificial. The question might be ‘whos government’, jims or ours?

Maybe where JIM lives the cops aren’t robbing anybody, so he dont’ care. Or maybe JIM has NOTHING to steal, maybe he’s just a pauper who has never accumulated anything from a life’s work and simply accepts that criminals will always exchange stolen goods?

I can accept that JIM, doesn’t care about his fellow man’s misfortune, but I cannot accept this idea that the US government doesn’t have the finest tools available on the planet to collect intelligence on every life-form on the planet.

Absolute control of ALL, requires absolute information, that is why POINDEXTER demanded TIA long ago. Jim see’s this as well a symptom of ‘peak oil’. But corruption existed long before OIL, and it will exist long after OIL.

Cheap PORTABLE energy ‘OIL’ is just a flash in the pan in human history.

Dealing with corruption, is an age old problem, and denying that a master-puppet (Israel) exists, and tell others that the enemy is stupid, really doesn’t help anyone.

      I agree with you 100%.

Never before in history has there been a society so dependent upon GUBMINT, today 60% of the US public wait every month for a Treasury Check,

Trouble is, where does this money come from? Its non-sustainable, … ok by force the NSA/CIA can prop the petro-dollar, but that will not always be there,

So problem is HOW in the fucking HELL do you keep the 40% funding the 60%, and when I talk about 60% forget welfare Ho’s, I’m talking about ALL the people getting $200k/year+

So, yes the GOVT has created one hell-uv-a ponzi, .. but now what?

Me thinks that ALL is left is outright door-to-door THEFT of assets to keep the cops fed, that’s why they want the data, that’s why the DHS created the FUSION centers, … they need to know where is the gold, drugs, pussy, and all the good stuff, ..

Green’s & Peak,s unless they have $$ are of no interest, probably the smartest cover in the USA would be to go on welfare and declare poverty.

I’ll say one last thing, good friend was in ALBANIA post russian collapse,… first day the cop’s went door to door to inventory wealth, for your protection, the following week, they went door to door to confiscate.

The USA (NSA/DHS) has a different approach with facebook/gmail data they already know what’s in your house, and where you have hidden it, … its all just now a matter of coming by the house, pretext? child-porn, bombs, .. drugs,… its endless the cops have already invented a million reasons to knock&rob.

Contrast these 2 tales of BIG BRO, BIG GOV!
    Big Data and You!

Recently, Slashdot had an article noting that a comprehensive K-12 database is being constructed, state by state. The chief movers of this nasty project, which includes student and parent social security numbers, names, addresses, grades, attendance records, learning disabilities, test scores, student hobbies, activities, attitudes towards school, homework completion and more, is the brainchild of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the Carnegie Foundation, and everyone’s least favorite mogul, Rupert Murdoch [whiskeysplace]

    Via AWD:
Shocking, just shocking! Dear Leader has ordered all mosques not to be investigated…but what the heck, ‘we the people‘ can be spied on with every tool they have on hand, the recent NSA scandal has proved that little fact for all to see! – Hypocrisy much? Agenda, agenda, agenda!
Here’s the story, this is via IBD:
Homeland Insecurity: The White House assures that tracking our every phone call and keystroke is to stop terrorists, and yet it won’t snoop in mosques, where the terrorists are.
That’s right, the government’s sweeping surveillance of our most private communications excludes the jihad factories where homegrown terrorists are radicalized.
Since October 2011, mosques have been off-limits to FBI agents. No more surveillance or undercover string operations without high-level approval from a special oversight body at the Justice Department dubbed the Sensitive Operations Review Committee.
Who makes up this body, and how do they decide requests? Nobody knows; the names of the chairman, members and staff are kept secret.
We do know the panel was set up under pressure from Islamist groups who complained about FBI stings at mosques. Just months before the panel’s formation, the Council on American-Islamic Relations teamed up with the ACLU to sue the FBI for allegedly violating the civil rights of Muslims in Los Angeles by hiring an undercover agent to infiltrate and monitor mosques there.

So folks, what is the agenda?

Nobel Scientists Speak Out and TELL YOU HOW to Hide From the GUBMINT that BIG-JIM tell’s us NOT to fear …

BIG BROTHER really is watching you. A series of revelations over the past week has revealed the extent of the US government’s snooping. But there are ways that the average citizen can avoid the prying eyes of the state.

Last week, whistleblower Edward Snowden – a former contractor with the National Security Agency (NSA) – told UK newspaper The Guardian that the NSA not only has details of phone calls made by millions of Verizon customers, it also has some form of access to its citizens’ internet activity as part of a programme named Prism.

The details of exactly how the NSA accesses personal data held by US internet companies are still unclear (see “Split the difference”). Access to Verizon’s call metadata was obtained using a secret court order forcing the firm to hand over information including call duration, number and cellphone tower details.

But the main cause for concern is that network science today means governments can glean remarkable insights from the vast amount of data they compile about their citizens’ every move. So what exactly can they find out about us – and how can we opt out?

Tanya Berger-Wolf at the University of Illinois in Chicago, who studies methods of extracting information from large data sets, says combining data from sources such as Google, Facebook and Verizon can tell you a lot. “You can put together a very good, composite dossier of a person,” she says.

Phone calls alone can provide plentiful information. Yves-Alexandre de Montjoye of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and colleagues analysed 1.5 million anonymised call records from a Western cell carrier. They showed that it takes just four calls or text messages, each made at a different time and place, to distinguish one person’s movements from everyone else’s (Nature Scientific Reports, doi.org/msd).

An experiment by German politician Malte Spitz shows what happens when you fuse such data with online activity. Spitz sued German telecoms giant Deutsche Telekom to get it to hand over six months of his own phone data. Then, working with German newspaper Die Zeit, Spitz melded that data with social network and other web information about him to create a map that tracked his movements and activities. It showed where Spitz was at any given time, what he was doing, how many calls he made and how long he was connected to the internet. The NSA’s supercomputers would make light work of creating an even more detailed portrait of anyone it was interested in.

Chris Clifton, who works on data privacy at Purdue University in Indiana, says the NSA will be using software to sort the records into groups by similarity – people who make lots of calls, for example, or people who never call abroad. Patterns in time could be useful, too. If one call appears to spark a flurry of others, that might mean the first phone number belongs to an authority figure in a criminal organisation, for instance.

But for citizens who want to guard their privacy, there are a number of options. Apps like Silent Circle and RedPhone can already encrypt your calls and send them over a data connection or Wi-Fi instead of through your carrier’s voice network. They also stop carriers from logging end phone numbers. Downloads have exploded since The Guardian’s revelations – but such apps do not give you full anonymity because they cannot prevent your movements between phone masts being tracked.

A new standard for communication known as WebRTC (Web Real-Time Communication) could enable users to make calls over the internet without leaving any traces at all. That’s because it doesn’t rely on centralised servers but rather sends traffic directly between individual computers.

Combined with an encrypted connection using the anonymising Tor network, which sends data via volunteer networks of computers, WebRTC could keep your internet communications invisible to prying eyes.

An organisation called Tor Servers is aiming to bolster traffic speeds across Tor exit nodes – the points at which traffic from Tor enters the real internet. Its mission statement is to “make the Tor network more stable, faster and more anonymous for everyone”.

There are even efforts afoot to build an entirely new internet, one free from control by large corporations and, by extension, governments. Project Meshnet aims to have its own router hardware, and for this to communicate without using the infrastructure of large telecoms companies. That is still some way off, but for now you can use the software version, called cjdns, which runs on existing infrastructure. Physical Meshnets are already up and running in Maryland, Seattle and New York.

And there are ways to protect people’s privacy while still obtaining information. An MIT project called openPDS works by only allowing third parties to ask questions of a data set, without allowing them to get their hands on the raw data. This, combined with legal systems that notify individuals when their data has been searched, could change the privacy debate. “Such a ‘mixed approach’ to privacy is the way forward,” de Montjoye says.

Privacy: What’s that? In Israel, PRISM shocks no one
Israelis, who instinctively surrender their bags and pop open their trunks for inspection, were scarcely surprised by the revelation that the U.S. government is spying on its citizens. Are privacy violations a small price to pay for security?

    http://www.haaretz.com/blogs/routine-emergencies/privacy-what-s-that-in-israel-prism-shocks-no-one.premium-1.528713

Talking points, .. Reading/Writing off the script… Haaretz seem’s to be following the same script as Kunstler, …

    ***

Kodner, whose piece is titled “Forget PRISM, your privacy is already dead,” and other commentators and average citizens here are saying that Israelis can only be jealous of the American ability to be stunned by the PRISM story. “Anyone who is shocked by this clearly hasn’t seen an episode of ‘Homeland,’” one Facebook status read. It’s little wonder that Israeli companies did some of the pioneering work in developing these technologies.

    ***

Sort of like watching stupid little GOYIM, how their ‘stunned’ by BAD,… yes, … funny how PRISM was 100% developed by ISRAEL, funny indeed that its PROUDLY all over the ISRAELI PRESS, but NOBODY WOULD DARE MENTION in the UNITED-STASI

Someone’s really desperate for us to take these spying charges seriously. Why would that be? I like JHK’s treatment of this “news” better than the multiple sockpuppets’ treatment. The socks want you to get all fired up and do something reactionary. JHK essentially thumbs his nose at the “news.” Irreverence goes much further in destabilizing a perceived enemy than reaction. A perceived enemy wants you to react. If you don’t, and instead turn your other cheek to them in a dismissive and insulting manner, it destabilizes them, psychically. Good try, socks, but we’re not biting. Take it to Stormfront.

I think that Eleuthero is right to not over-estimate the effectiveness of these surveillance schemes. Or the competence of the bureaucrats assigned to run them. Maybe they can’t use this data to find the bad guys because it’s just not technically feasible. Maybe this is a case of make-believe, they’re trying to make you believe they can do something they can’t.

But there’s malice to consider. What of the possibility that duly blessed and constituted procedures are subverted? What of the possibility that the FISA Court becomes a rubber stamp or that the a-political bureaucracy that runs this thing suddenly turns political like the IRS recently did with their singling out of conservative causes for harassment? What of the possibility that the database containing all this neat stuff gets hacked?

E talks about pretentious shit. Here’s some: they say they collected “metadata”.

What is metadata? Wiki says it’s “data about data” and a bunch of other stuff, too detailed to recount here. Let’s say it IS metadata. So what?

Meta data? Sounds like bullshit to me. Why? Because they say that the data they hoovered up is very specific. Why would calling it something like “metadata” be in any way re-assuring?

I think maybe BeingThere has a point. Correct us if we’re wrong but it sounds like, if someone with access wanted to, they could use this info to blackmail people or to seriously screw them up. Like for instance, people with zesty political views. Or somebody running for office.

So, let’s say someone gets access and zeroes in on someone they don’t like. And they notice repeated calls to a certain number. And this number is registered to a certain young gal who is not the wife of this someone they don’t like. Can’t happen?

These honeytrap scenarios sound so drearily commonplace. But they are time-tested. They work. Look at Bill Clinton’s adventures with Monika. De-railed his second term. Hard to believe that Washington was utterly consumed with this nonsense for years.

Maybe things like this aren’t supposed to happen. But then bureaucrats are capable of mind boggling feats of stupidity. Like those knuckleheads at the IRS that thought nobody would notice their abusive treatment of conservative organizations. The claim is that this was a case of bueaucratic stupidty. I don’t think so. I think it was deliberate and targetted and malicicous.

Is the data “safe”? Because when someone tells me there’s firewalls or that the data is encrypted I think of boy geniuses making their living breaking the supposedly unbreakable.

    • Jaego June 14, 2013 at 12:34 pm #

I’ll bet that assorted US intelligence outfits are very, very busy leaning on every resource they’ve got so they can, by hook or by crook, snatch Mr Snowdon and bundle him back to the US.

Couldn’t help but hear that this President Obama, like his predecessor, isn’t all that squeamish about using questionable means to apprehend and detain people and extract information from them. Oh, and whack them. I think that Mr Snowdon said that last thought crossed his mind.

So, as of this morning, Mr Snowdon is still in Hong Kong. Supposedly anyway. But did you notice that Mr Snowdon’s specific whereabouts are unknown? Again, supposedly. Let’s suppose that he’s at still at liberty in Hong Kong. Do you want to bet that US intel agents and the Russkis and the Chinese all have eyes on him? Want to bet he can’t take a crap without them all knowing?

There was a headline that US -ahem- “authorities” are afraid he’ll defect to China. In that case, these “authorities” are about as smart as any teen with a taste for spy novels.

What are the odds that the Chinese already grabbed him? Or at least had some really long sit-downs with him. Wouldn’t surprise me. Would it surprise you?

Russia says they might consider giving Snowdon asylum. A howler that was. What do you think the quid pro quo might be?

This is why its critical to think about ‘data mining for the little guy’, I have written many articles, … but you need to understand that all these ‘toilet cam’s are online, …

The NSA is simply doing what facebook&google built for the corporations, and they’re data-mining with a different angle.

Given that the data-mining by the corporation, is on the same legal level as NSA/CIA, given that all algorithms are public-domain. Given that high speed computer’s are now available for less than $1000, cuda, nvidia, amdX,

Now its possible for any little guy, with the right direction to offer 24/7 SPYING on all politicians, I see it coming, … perhaps as a service, or a distributed wiki, and then client app’s consolidate the data,

Given that FEINSTEIN & McCAIN are OK, with 24/7 information awareness, then they should be OK, with we the people watching Feinstein in the toilet.

This is coming, … and there is nothing they can do, they made spying legal for the corporations first, and then sold it to the local cops, and then the NSA decided to play catch up, and now the little guy can spy on the spy’s…

Feinstein of course will call for little guy spying to be illegal, but the cat is out of the bag, and ALL this stuff is public if you know how to find it.

      CATCH-22

Snowden is only safe in 2 country’s that are too big for the USA to kill

      CHINA-RUSSIA,

So snowden has to go somewhere safe, if snowden was still in the USA, he would have been ‘black-bagged’ ( v for vendetta ).

If snowden goes to china-russia he’s a traitor, if he stays in occupied US territory ( 80% of the earth ), he’s a dead man.

Well its better to be an alive ‘traitor’, than a dead traitor.

      Not much choice is there?

SNOWDEN has put this debate into world consciousness so this is GOOD, I myself have always known about the scope of the NSA SPying. But I think the majority of world citizens were in DENIAL.

      So this is all good.

Of course the zionists that control this blog, hate this subject, … move along.

Several days ago I happened to be watching CNBC when the usually overheated Jim Cramer proclaimed that everyone should “just accept” that some people get to front run trades in the various markets. I turned the TV off and haven’t turned it on since.

It’s good that the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that naturally occurring DNA can’t be patented, but remember, some people thought that it was OK to do that for the sake of a profitable investment.

And speaking of overheated, the commenter who is seeking approval for their Final Solution to Israeli control should really spend some time outside. I personally remain unmoved by their fear mongering.

So how should we rally against such overwhelming forces? Are you ready to sacrifice your body?

Despite whatever positive changes you may think you have embraced, if you are still paying taxes, still voting for Democrats and Republicans, still spending your money on products made and sold by multinational corporations, don’t expect any of this way of life to change until there are serious commodity shortages.

Hopefully, we can run faster than the environmental damage we are causing.

Go out and chase some butterflies while they are still around.

Follow Ariel Castro closely, that has got to be the best story going down about the implosion of the ‘oil state’.

CIA/NSA/FBI … running safe-outs and free sex all over the USA, what’s different this time is neighbors had reported to police for 10 years that they saw girls naked on leashes like dogs ( abu-ghraib ), and the police refused to enter the house. Everybody in the HOOD understood that Ariel Castro was running a ‘CIA Safehouse’, … pretty safe uhh? Your a cop on the LAM, and you stay low in a house full of women to be used as ‘sex pets’.

There are operations such as this all over the USA, … little wonder that the CIA/NSA needs to spy, and cover their ass on these ‘safe houses’.

Go Type up I 610 Houston on You tube, and find hundreds of videos showing you people driving over highwaystan oh sorry Houston.
why? Because they can. you have three or four intersecting technologies and time available.

Cheap gas , a car, lots of lanes, car cameras, you tube. put them all together and you can watch people zooming across any given freeway in US and Canada.
Data mining is like that, do it because, a you can, b you ghave resources on hand or you have commandeered it through lobbying power.
It useful in the same way the highway videos are, a snapshot in time of a way of life that will soon fade.
And btw, Houston has more highways planned and coming up. one more outer ring Grand Parkway at junction of SR99 and I 10 near Katy, more guaranteed waste of resources for years to come.

Actually the plans are not for Houston, but around the greater Houston region. And they have been on paper as plans since the 80s but many of the segments are not being built. For example, the segment from SH 249 (Tomball Parkway) to IH 45 (N) (North Freeway) through Harris County which folks in The Woodlands might find useful.

You all know that the human body is 98% water, and worth about zilch, well your total information is worth about .0005 cents in the corporate world and that’s how its sold by the corporations.

The GOVERNMENT doesn’t want to PAY, that’s what this WHOLE debate is about.

What do we do? Quit using ALL USA web services, … problem solved.

Go to HUSHMAIL.COM, go to any search engine offshore,… host your web in another country, … problem solved.

THE FACT IS, MORE WHITES RECEIVE AID than blacks or Hispanics. Two out of three welfare recipients are children, not adults. And contrary to the stereotype of families forever dependent, nearly three out of four women receiving aid get off welfare within two years.

“The white women are invisible,” says Nancy Lyman-Shaver, a former welfare mother who now runs a criminal-justice program for ARISE, a social welfare organization in Springfield, Massachusetts.

“They are the daughters and nieces of middle-class, suburban families who end up on welfare because of a divorce or an abusive partner.

“Every family I know has someone receiving AFDC, but no one likes to talk about it.”

The little people on welfare are NOT the problem,

The problem is COPS,Soldiers, and secret police ( majority ).

60% of the USA public get a check from the gubmint, they all be welfare HO’s, of those only a small percentage of this total outlay is paid, besides MOST ‘welfare’ money is state, but 60% of the USA public is on the FASCIST payroll, aka welfare, and corporate welfare.

The percentage of dollars that go to poor white and women of color is in the single digits.

+95% of welfare HO money goes to cop/soldiers, and of that the majority goes to FUND their retirement funds.

      • blow joe June 15, 2013 at 12:28 am #

This is why the police state that is the USA will never die, because the new elite that have the most money are the cops.

Hangman, gendarmes, and executioners. Best paid people in ameriKKKa.

Best pay, and best retirement, and best benefits.

These are the REAL welfare HO’s in the USA. The cop’s, and the majority are off budget secret cop’s.

        • BleatToTheBeat June 15, 2013 at 1:06 am #

Ozone thinks the usa will never again see economic growth. The index of U.S. leading indicators says otherwise. The indicators climbed in April, a rebound from March that suggests the world’s largest economy will accelerate later this year.

The Conference Board’s gauge of the outlook for the next three to six months climbed 0.6 percent in April after falling a revised 0.2 percent in March that was steeper than previously reported, the New York-based group said today. The median forecast of economists surveyed by Bloomberg called for a 0.2 percent increase.

Advancing stock prices and a recovering housing market may be propping up household spending, which accounts for about 70 percent of the economy.

    It’s all good.

Great article, thanks for the link.

Here’s one on Markus Wolf from the dim and distant past of 2010, referring to the forgotten and barely accessible year of 2005! (I know, I know, eons ago, but they seem to have had a crude writing system back then.)

      http://tickergrail.blogspot.com/2010/12/flashback-markus-wolf-former-east.html

…And Boston turned out to be a very successful testing of “special instances”. Fer chris’sakes, the Totenkopfs were overwhelmingly WELCOMED into homes (sans warrant of any kind) because the good people were convinced they were being “kept safe”.

Seems “public safety” is proceeding flawlessly.

I had a dream several years back wherein the American people were being rounded up into personnel carrier vehicles in order to be transported to some unknown location. Each person was given a color to denote a “threat” level. Green was a zero threat, yellow was a questionable threat, and red was an American citizen considered to be a strong threat. Each person was made to wear the color and board the vehicle in the neighborhoods corresponding to their threat. It seems that still today, though not out in the open yet, it is a distinct possibly they could be planning for.

By the way, after the Gulf Oil Spill just happened and there was little news about the extent of the problem or any stirrings in the media. I also had a dream that Matthew Simmons would die and it would “look” like an accident. Behind the activities surrounding this event was a criminal racket that captured locals and held them in the bay (or ie, at bay).

No one knows the full extent of criminal activities at the highest levels, but one should probably not sleep too easily at night.

I am re-posting this as an original comment, rather than as a reply, so that it will appear in chronological order and won’t go unnoticed. I’d like to know if others here at CFN are encountering the same experience as I describe.

    “And yet another test.

I hope, but am not optimistic, that Jim will see this comment/reply and realize that this needs to be fixed.”

JHK–almost done with “Too Much Magic”. I really thought I was informed about some of the goings-on in the past few years, but boy…the connections that you make, particularly with banking…make me want to just give up on this whole humanity thing.

Past that…I would have to agree with the idea that this data mining isn’t so much for “blackmail of future political opponents” as it is a toy for the truly paranoid. It’s like hiding in a coat closet at a party you weren’t invited to–to hear what people are saying about you.

Activists and protestors announce their intentions, particularly when you need to apply for a permit to congregate anymore. This data mining tool—being used by McDonalds? WalMart? WTF? Seriously? It almost sounds like an Edward Bernays wet dream of advertising. Do they really want to tap into the buying psyche of the average Walmartian?

    Be my guest.

The banks use it? Probably. I’d be pretty paranoid that someone was going to off me too if I were them. That’d be pretty important information to have!

Oh yeah…and you don’t think that perhaps…they’re selling information to competing businesses, do you? I mean, the gov’t wouldn’t actually be listening in on say….Apple….and then putting in a call to say…..Bill Gates….do you?

In actuality, folks–what they’re doing isn’t all that much different than you listening to the radio. You don’t pay for that reception, do you? The radiowaves are sent out there to whomever wants to tune in–and the advertising does the rest.

The NSA may have access to FB and Google and all that—but honestly, so does everyone else. I access the internet via satellite, because of where I live—I can attempt all I like to prevent outside access to my information, but once that satellite transmits that data…it’s out there for the world to see.

I can send you a keylogger via “cute puppy picture” on one pixel—and data mine your computer til my head explodes. I can purchase listening devices that look like your alarm clock or your kids’ teddy bear and take pictures too! I have my own cellphone camera–I can follow you everywhere you go and film your every move and put it on YouTube anonymously.

These are truly amateur and common ways that people spy on each other ALL THE TIME.

EVERYONE has this capability…you just need to have no moral compass in order to deploy something like that.

I think it’s a distraction. If I were of the truly paranoid ilk—I would wonder if Oily Bomber himself isn’t involved in setting up some willing patsy to “come out” with all of this “information”…get everyone all hyped up in a hissy fit—

So that we don’t trust each other, that we don’t come together to attempt to solve the more PRESSING problems we are facing right now. Turkey. Syria. Russia. Peak Oil. Peak Water. Fracking. KeystoneXL. Iran. Fukushima. Need I go on?

Data mining? Really? So I sexted my ex boyfriend once and I want to run for Governor. Right now….I think that it’s a pre-requisite for me to have done that to be Governor, right?

    • BleatToTheBeat June 16, 2013 at 6:41 pm #

“…Prism was originally thought to be a program to force Internet companies to hand over private user data to the government. But it turns out that Prism is actually a filtering tool to “make sense of the cacophony of the Internet’s raw feed…Prism takes large beams of data and helps the government find discrete, manageable strands of information.”

It then manages those strands of data by creating dossiers on every Internet user, providing the government with “names, addresses, conversation histories and entire archives of email inboxes.”

And, of course, all of this data is collected and kept on innocent people without a warrant or any probable cause.” -J.P. Hicks

There, okay? Nothing at all to worry about. Move along, nothing to see here; return to your homes and shelter in place… so we’ll know where to find you when we come for you at a [slightly] later date.

One half of the underclass (cops and troops) to oppress, kill and imprison the other half in exchange for the special privileges of food, shelter and clothing.

    Asoka dead.

    Comments section dead.

I remember some of Asoka’s assumptions:

    1. A LIVING, NOT DEAD UNIVERSE: Asoka said we live in a living, regenerative universe. This insight transforms our understanding of where we are, who we are, and where we are going. Asoka rejected the “laws of dead matter physics” because he/she said there is no “law giver.”

    2. SUSTAINABLE WAYS OF LIVING: Consumerism makes sense in a dead universe. But voluntary, happy, simplicity makes more sense in a living universe — and that was Asoka’s view of the reality emerging now. Asoka posted many times on permaculture (even though he or she was often attacked for doing so). Asoka posted on how to live on $12,000 a year, which is where he or she thought we would collectively be most happy, as well as in tune with energy descent.

    3. MASS MEDIA AND MASS MIND: Asoka believed that at this pivotal time in human evolution, it is vitally important that messages in the mass media serve our psychological and spiritual health and not distort our collective intelligence, imagination and evolution. Hence, Asoka’s endless battle with CFN doomsterism / CFN pessimism / CFN fatalism.

    4. GREAT TRANSITION STORIES: Asoka said we are in the early stages of a ‘great transition.’ He or she noted there are a number of stories that offer insight into this process, none of which appear on CFN.

    5. TRUTH AND RECONCILIATION: Asoka believed we require processes that will acknowledge and work to overcome the thousands of years of separation that has been experienced by different people at different times, including: women/men, poor/rich, black/white, old/young, Muslim/Christian, humans/other life-forms, etc. Asoka thought we would benefit enormously from a global, truth and reconciliation process at every scale.

    But Asoka dead.

    Comments section dead.
