A mighty nausea wells up across the land as the awful day cometh. Who will receive the black spot of fate on Tuesday? I wouldn’t want to be him or her on that dreadful day. The flagship of Modernity has lost its vaunted mojo and nobody knows what to do about it as the USS-USA pitches and yaws into the maelstrom.
Much opinion “out there” contends that we will have to suffer an election overtime, with the results contested on every hill and molehill from sea to shining sea. That scenario suggests various outcomes, all of them pretty bad: 1) the election is once again relegated to a Supreme Court case, only this time it ends up a 4-4 tie. Constitutional crisis time. 2) Perhaps as a function of No. 1, it ends up in the US House of Representatives. The catch is: members aren’t limited to Trump or HRC. They can vote for whoever they like. 3) A lot of web chatter has President Obama invoking some sort of emergency with the election postponed until some conclave of political viziers can figure a way out of it. Unlikely, but possible.
FBI Director James Comey’s eleventh hour reprieve of Hillary in the email server case sent an odor of rotting carp wafting across the political landscape. Like, his peeps actually vetted 650,000 emails in a week? I’m sure. Of course, the FBI does not issue indictments; that’s AG Loretta Lynch’s job over at the Department of Justice. The FBI only makes criminal referrals to such. But this puts too fine a point on the matter because the much more serious issue is the Clinton Foundation case, and the arrant sale of influence while HRC ran the State Department.
That currently overshadowed case is not closed. It sends up the odor not of a single rotting carp but of an entire whale pod dead on the beach. Half the emirs in Arabia dropped millions on the foundation to facilitate arms deals or to influence policy at State, and that was only part of what looks exactly like a classic racketeering operation. The Clinton Foundation story is not going away anytime soon and it will suck all the air out of the public arena for as far ahead as anyone can see when Hillary is in the oval office.
All of that obscures the gathering calamity in banking and finance that drives the waiting, whirling maelstrom. Thanks to eight years of central bank experiments, the engines of capital are hopelessly gunked up with political additives like QE and ZIRP™. Nothing is priced correctly, especially money. It’s all kept running on an ether of accounting fraud. We can’t come to grips with the resource realities behind the fraud, especially the end of cheap oil. And the bottom line is the already-manifest slowdown of global business. The poobahs of banking pretend to be confounded by all this because everything — their reputations, their jobs, their fortunes — depends on the Potemkin narrative that ever-greater economic expansion lies just around the corner.
Not so. What waits around the corner is a global scramble for the table scraps of the late techno-industrial banquet. Scrambles like that are liable to foment kinetic conflict. Neither Hillary or Trump appear to have a clue what this means and so they are likely to misinterpret the true signals amid all the noise and start an unnecessary war. Hillary is already hard at it with her cawing over supposed “Russian hackers” in the election.
The tragedy of Trump is that he represented a roster of legitimate grievances but argued them so poorly and then betrayed them with behavior so oafish and crude that he often looked not sane enough to hold high office. His partisans brushed that aside, saying it was good enough that he personified a giant “fuck you” to the political establishment. No, that wasn’t good enough because in the process he de-legitimized the issues.
For instance, There are excellent arguments for a “time-out” from immigration. Congress acted on that in 1925, after a half-century flood of immigration needed to man the factories of the early 20th century. The consensus on that policy change was arrived at with minimal rancor — and just in time, by the way, for the Great Depression, when manufacturing employment crashed. We’re also in for a collapse of activity, only this time it won’t be the few remaining factory workers. It’ll be everyone from the McDonalds counter jockeys to the bond packagers of Goldman Sachs.
The establishment will get its “fuck you” anyway. I do go along with the argument advanced by others that it would probably be better for Hillary to win, because that way the right people (the gang already in power) will be blamed for the descent into the maelstrom and will be expeditiously swept away.
Just about anything may rise up across America after that — the true corn-pone Nazi who succeeds Trump in the meshuggeneh branch of conservative politics… a second civil war… or a World Made By Hand. I detect a general awareness that the country must pass through some epic ordeal to straighten itself out. Well, here it is, just in time or the holidays.
Me? I’m going to write-in my vote for Homey D. Clown, because he don’t mess around.

No, that’s not exactly true. Here is the relevant passage of the 12th Amendment, which reformed presidential elections.
“The person having the greatest Number of votes for President, shall be the President, if such number be a majority of the whole number of Electors appointed; and if no person have such majority, then from the persons having the highest numbers not exceeding three on the list of those voted for as President, the House of Representatives shall choose immediately, by ballot, the President.”
Unless Evan McMullin wins Utah or Gary Johnson wins New Mexico, the states where they are most likely to get electoral votes, or the faithless elector in Washington goes through with his threat to vote for Bernie Sanders, the House of Representatives will have to chose between Trump and Clinton. Even if all of the above happens, the House will still chose only among three. McMullin, the former CIA agent and proxy for the Deep State, will get the nod as Utah has six electoral votes to New Mexico’s five. In any case, I’d give the advantage to Trump because of the next part.

More congressional delegations have Republican majorities than Democratic ones, so Trump would win unless McMullin qualifies and the Deep State prevails. Given the FBI’s behavior, I doubt the security apparatus has its act together enough to make that happen.

You’re right, neither of them do. In the case of Trump, this showed up over the weekend in his proposal for a grandiose space plan that puts Newt Gingrich to shame. If he had any idea about what a future of resource depletion would mean for a space program that ambitious, he would propose something just as impressive sounding that might actually do something on Earth. Then again, I’m a space enthusiast and I actually like his idea, although rooting for Trump to win so that it would be implemented is like hoping for the alternative history in “The Man in the High Castle” to be real so there could be commercial SSTs in the early 1960s. The cost is too high.
Speaking of dystopian science fiction, Bill Maher praised Hillary Clinton a couple of weeks ago as the “cold, technocratic boss lady in a pantsuit” from movies like “Hunger Games: Mockingjay,” “Divergent,” and “The Giver.” Yes, he was comparing her favorably to the villains and saying that was exactly what the U.S. needed. Well, it beats being ruled by Donald Trump as Immortan Joe from “Mad Max: Fury Road.”
Jim, I’m not sure about you, but I can’t wait for tomorrow to be over. I can’t take it any more. I miss the coverage of The Mass Shootings and Cops Shooting Black People. All of that Great Entertainment has been put on hold for coverage of the latest Trump Rally or Clinton Stump Speech, or coverage of Comey’s latest pronouncements or coverage of Hillary’s Server Issue or another Trump Locker Room Talk tape or — you name it.

Unless it’s an exact tie in the electoral college, the decision going to the House would by definition mean that a third candidate won at least one state. So in practical terms, yes, the House could pick someone besides Trump or Hillary. Also, there is a scenario by which Pence or Kaine could be acting President if the House fails to choose.

Comey said that the emails were duplicates of other emails already reveiwed by the FBI. Lawyers routinely use electronic discovery programs to aid in reviewing e-mails and other digital records. One of the most useful features of those programs is that they identify and remove duplicate emails, which can save countless hours of review time. So yes, it is entirely plausible that Mr. Comeys team used one of these programs to vet the 650,000 emails.
But unlikely. She’s as guilty as sin as are the rest of them. If one goes, they all are in danger, much like pulling a thread. Comey has betrayed his office. Hopefully renegade agents will continue to submarine her and the rest of this Satanic Cabal.

More likely that would be a laryngectomy (I did not check the spelling), which is removal of the vocal chords. I think with a tracheotomy the person would still be able to speak just by sealing the opening in the neck with their hand, thus directing air over the vocal chords, so no electronic speech generator would be needed. Pretty gruesome, isn’t it?

I used tracheotomy (the old hole in the throat) because when I was growing up there was a old guy in the neighborhood who had the electrolarynx device due to throat cancer and also a hole in the throat for breathing and also smoking the occasional coffin nail as he did not quite get the message that smoking can and will fuck-you-up good. All the kids were fascinated by the old guy with his “robot” voice monotone buzzing and that occasional cigarette being puffed on through his throat hole. Most adults were repulsed. He had a saying that when something was awful it was “as funny as a tracheotomy.”
Mr. K, if it was just my wife and me, I’d be more that ready for a “World Made by Hand.” Actually, we have no survival skills, so we’d soon be dead if the nuke didn’t hit us first. But I have kids. The only chance, small as it may be, to avoid the world of your excellent dystopian novels, is to take a walk on the wild side and elect Trump. But, as persecuted hero Julian Assange tells us: “Trump will not be permitted to win.”
Iowa is predicted to go for Trump by a large margin, so I have the luxury of voting my conscience, third party, without it making a difference in the result.
I could support Trump on the issues of immigration and bad trade deals, but as has been said before about one of the candidates or the other, he has more baggage than Delta Airlines. Hillary, on the other hand, has more baggage than the Berlin Airlift.
If Hillary wins, I think there will be enough citizens not yet subdued by Paxil, Zoloft, or Prozac to make her attempts at governing seem not just lame, but pathetic. Like JHK, I kind of, sort of, hope she wins. She deserves the sorry fate that will be the Oval Office.

Yes my home is in Des Moines proper, on what I call the outer edge of the inner city. Many nice homes like ours, but also some blight. The people with enough money, mostly white, live in the far out suburbs, on what was recently farmland. They thus show what they think of diversity.
I used to sign my comments something like “From Des Moines, Iowa, the Sprawl Capital of the World.” That’s because the best farmland in the world is in central Iowa, where Des Moines is located; and urban sprawl is destroying that land–for all practical purposes, forever.
Land here is the best in the world for farming for two reasons: the incredibly rich soil, and the rainfall, which makes irrigation unnecessary. Granted, there is good land in the Central Valley of California, but without irrigation water brought in at great expense from several states distant, it is too dry to produce a good crop.
No you are quite right, business as usual will prevail until it no longer can. That’s the way the world works and anything else would be too much work.

Whatever gets straightened out in the end won’t be the country we grew up with, but something else or “somethings else” occupying the same land mass.
Brains are wired for cornicopianism. Like children we want to believe in happy endings and an “epic ordeal” is a trial by fire with a happy ending. It is just our brains doing what they do best, deceiving us and making us believe that reality always has a sweet chewey center even when it does not.
The truth is that there is no epic ordeal before us from which we can ‘break on through to the other side’. Our future will be a long emergency without end. There is no other side.

A friend of mine, a foreigner here legally, had a question for me. He had come back from an event where funds were being raised for the young man severely burned in a crash recently. He wanted to know why, now that we have “universal coverage” under Obamacare, it was necessary for the friends and family of the patient to raise money. That’s a good question.

I would like to see a robot trim a fruit tree intelligently, it will never happen! Never mind picking fruit with an eye for quality. I use a 12 ft orchard ladder and a 16 ft. orchard pole . Ai is cool but there is never gonna be a substitute for reason and common sense. A machine can build a car, I would like one to diagnose and tear down an engine, never mind replace a head gasket or weld a rusted frame where it was needed. How about going in the basement and fixing a leaky pipe? Call the robo plumber and tell him to find the leak, it is not going to happen. Try getting a robot to pull 200 ft. of hose,climb 4 flights, find the sweet spot and put the wet stuff on the red stuff. It ain’t gonna happen for a thousand years.

Certainly! What do they have to identify? Basically if the email comes
from Hillary Clinton or not to see if Hillary sent any classified emails which si the only indictable offense. In any email system it is relatively easy on just a normal personal computer to find all the email from any sender. With the FBI’s far more powerful computers it is even easier.
It also does not take that long to do a text search through thousands of text emails even just to search for whatever Hillary Clinton’s email address was wherever it was in the emails, whether the mail headers or the text. The mail headers are always in text hence easily searchable. So this is a Red Herring..
I am no Hillary Clinton fan, I planned from the start to vote for Jill Stein of the Green Party until Berne Sanders ran and then I gave him my money and my vote. But some of the attacks on Hillary are really out of line. Fellow progressives have also been unfair to her – if you read some of the Wikileaked emails you find that to her credit, Hillary Clinton, even in her overpaid speeches to the banksters insisted on her support for ending the carried interest loophole which allowed Hedge Fund cannibals like John Paulson to pay only 15% in taxes on an astonishing $1 Billion of income in just one year.
I do not understand why Kunstler has not backed the Green Transition plans of the Greens and Jill Stein or why he continues to repeat some of the right wing shibboleths long proven false. Kunstler bashed Bernie Sanders as well before he was stiffed out of the race by the Corporate Democratic machine.

Presentation of Trump as “anti-system candidate,” is fundamentally wrong. He is quite systemic, well integrated into the American elite, but the fact is that within the American elite now there is unprecedented in cruelty internal struggle between the two camps, whose principle interests, images of the future, and even ideology are far from being the same.
The fundamental problem lies in the fact that there is simply not enough money for all, and it’s impossible to find a way to compromise.
Trump is being supported by developers (including the “infrastructure”), oil, coal miners, some pharmacological lobby and part of the agro-business, as well as vanishingly small formation of manufacturers who did not move their facilities to China or Mexico.
For example, the Republican nominee promises to take away from the military “trillions” that Washington spends on international interventions, and spend it on infrastructure projects in the United States that causes the wild enthusiasm from developers and the whole building lobby, but also becomes a cause of hatred in a significant portion of companies that are involved with defense budget.

Next US president will be weak. His/her legitimacy is called into question, and at least half of the population and a significant part of the elites will hate him/her;
Solving the problem of legitimacy through repression is possible, but it will be very costly. We know from our own Russian experience that repression improve the manageability of the system, but beat out of it a large number of key managers, which are difficult to replace quickly and even more difficult to find a quality replacement.
Moreover, the groups that are being repressed have a bad habit of exerting revenge, sabotage, and attracting foreign players to support their struggle for existence. Even in the case of successful winner of repression towards the defeated system will be seriously weakened, and in the event of unfortunate circumstances may even collapse into a full-fledged civil war;
The probability of the US falling into “institutional coma” due to which the state power structure actually can not run the country, should not be underestimated, and it is admitted even by such experts as Paul Krugman – an ardent supporter of Clinton – in an interview with Bloomberg: “The US is dangerously close to the failed state”

I recently recommended to the readership a CD of Russian choral pieces. Favorite piece of Music? His angle was to offer a short term trading strategy that had to be acted upon yesterday (Mon.) or today (Tues.). Wed. would be too late to act. Big money to be made if Trump won which Rickards predicted……but even if Hillary won some small money could be made.
Hillary has not conceded yet so I don’t want to get ahead of myself but I am ecstatic at the thought of all those NYT opinion writers squirming to explain “what the fuck happened??” Tops on that list, Paul Krugman.

A few months ago I was having some dark thoughts about the possibility of a Trump presidency, But one night I had one of “those dreams”. In my dream Trump was compassionate and yet befuddled: Why didn’t I like him because it was going to be alright. It made an impression; in fact I thought it was a signal that he would win but a signal I denied and strongly resisted in day to day life. That dream couldn’t be true, or so I told myself.
You probably think that’s bullshit but it’s the truth.
Bottom line: In my mind I have to give Trump a chance and wait and see what he’s really all about. I’m hoping the “Unifier” shows up for the job.

In my opinion, this is clear evidence that Hillary was broken up with one simple but killer argument – you can win the elections, rigging the results as well as you did in democratic primaries, even not allowing to count votes in California and taking Sanders’s brother grandchildren hostages to the island, where Bill Clinton and some other high-ranking US politicians love to spend time in the company of minors. But then the FBI will have to open all their trump cards and indict Hillary of High Treason – a capital offence.
Confirmation of the threat was sent to Clinton through the other channels. On November 4 the chairman of House Homeland Security Committee Michael McCaul said that he believes the actions of Hillary Clinton represent High Treason, since the transfer of secret information over insecure channels dealt a blow to the national security, as well as to all US intelligence operatives outside of the country.

I remember this very scene exactly 8 years ago when it was Obama-Bush. Eventually the two emerged from somewhere and walked cordially together toward the camera that captured them, along a sidewalk up against the sunny side of the White House. I can still picture it.

I was surprised to hear JHK’s last podcast. It was ostensibly about the Technospehere, but it was mostly about the human concept of progress. Humans, at least most, are incapable of disentangling the concept of progress from linear time. Time elapsed means progress, it means forward, it means a march for better and for good. This is entirely incorrect. It is a device employed by the human mind for a few beneficial evolutionary and coping reasons. There are people like Schmidt over at Alphabet that believe that progress over time in technology is inherently good. Augmented humanity, an eternal uploaded conscious, synthetic humans… and here we are, some of us, demanding that we deserve better, it’s 2016 and we have elected a megalomaniac over another megalomaniac. This should not happen. We are humanity, and time has elapsed, and that has taught us that things always change for the better… we can’t read the future and we sure as hell can’t read the past.

The then world’s greatest pool player, Willie Mosconi, who lived in nearby Haddon Heights, NJ, was playing a 100 point straight pool exhibition match at a pool room in Camden, NJ. Already battle lines of division are forming in the GOP. On day one after Trump’s victory, Paul Ryan immediately suggests privatizing Medicare with “Vouchercare”. IOW, he is elevating his agenda above that which Trump asserted he absolutely supports during the campaign: Medicare in it’s current form.
From a political positioning standpoint, this is absolutely fascinating. I would imagine from the vantage point of a Trump supporter, this is a slap in the face–Ryan upstarting the President Elect with his own agenda. Beyond that, Medicare is very popular among all Americans, and especially so in Trump’s elderly base. I suspect that right out of the starting gate, Ryan is seeking to distinguish himself from Trump and I would not be surprised if his goal is to weaken Trump in order to elevate his own 2020 aspirations.
Put another way, Trump is surrounded by those in his own party that have their own best interest in mind and not necessarily those of the President Elect (nothing new under the sun).
It is not an ideological contradiction for some on the left to be cheering for Trump since some of his policies are not diametrically divergent For instance, after reading the nuances,Trump is actually very logical, fair and wise on the issue student loan repayment. (Although it would also be very wise to discourage student loan borrowing in the future.)
Trump’s call to get smart on immigration resonated deeply, even among some on the left. The problem for Democrats is they have become so ossified in politically correct group think, that they are unable to even entertain the idea of walking 360 around an issue in order to apprehend other possibilities. Thus we see a JHK, for example getting pigeonholed by the intellectual rigidity of academia.
Boiled down: I think you are correct to be concerned that he “might blow it”. Being POTUS is a big job and he is surrounded by numerous “assistants”. He was not popular among large swaths of his own party and many of them have their own aspirational agendas, Paul Ryan, Mike Pence, Ted Cruz–no thanks, I’m now rooting for Trump.

I haven’t posted yet this week because it’s taken me this long to center myself and come to terms with the election results. First, I confess to being absolutely wrong (obviously) in saying Hillary was definitely going to win. I prepared myself emotionally to deal with her presidency. Then I thought about voting forTrump, but I couldn’t end my 48 year avoidance of voting with him being the cause of the end of my streak. Instead, I finally did vote.
In a flash of insight I wrote in my dead cat for president. It’s not as crazy as it sounds. He had a very Alfred E. Neumanesque personality. What, me worry? This seems to be the MO of American citizens, so that attitude would be very popular. And where in the Constitution does it say a candidate has to be human? It’s already happened. Google the dog who got re-elected mayor of a town in, I believe, Minnesota.
Alas, it was not to be. Apparently, a candidate has to be alive to run (although no criteria are stated as to what constitutes “alive”). I voted for my cat anyway.

“The media can’t be let off the hook for enabling an authoritarian to get to the White House. Long before he considered a presidential run, [Trump] was a media creation — a regular in the gossip pages, a photo on magazine covers, the bankrupt (morally and otherwise) mogul who hired and fired on The Apprentice. They have done so, and in so doing effectively destroyed the very idea of objectivity. Trump can lie constantly only because white America has accepted an Orwellian sense of truth — the truth pulled inside out.
With Trump’s election, I think that the ideal of an objective, truthful journalism is dead, never to be revived. Like Nixon and Sarah Palin before him, Trump ran against the media, boomeranging off the public’s contempt for the press. He ran against what he regarded as media elitism and bias, and he ran on the idea that the press disdained working-class white America. Among the many now-widening divides in the country, this is a big one, the divide between the media and working-class whites, because it creates a Wild West of information – a media ecology in which nothing can be believed except what you already believe.
With the mainstream media so delegitimized — a delegitimization for which they bear a good deal of blame, not having had the courage to take on lies and expose false equivalencies — they have very little role to play going forward in our politics. I suspect most of them will surrender to Trumpism — if they were able to normalize Trump as a candidate, they will no doubt normalize him as president. Cable news may even welcome him as a continuous entertainment and ratings booster. And in any case, like Reagan, he is bulletproof. The media cannot touch him, even if they wanted to. Presumably, there will be some courageous guerillas in the mainstream press, a kind of Resistance, who will try to fact-check him. But there will be few of them, and they will be whistling in the wind. Trump, like all dictators, is his own truth.
What’s more, Trump already has promised to take his war on the press into courtrooms and the halls of Congress. He wants to loosen libel protections, and he has threatened Washington Post owner Jeff Bezos of Amazon with an antitrust suit. Individual journalists have reason to fear him as well. He has already singled out NBC’s Katy Tur, perhaps the best of the television reporters, so that she needed the Secret Service to escort her from one of his rallies. Jewish journalists who have criticized Trump have been subjected to vicious anti-Semitism and intimidation from the alt-right. For the press, this is likely to be the new normal in an America in which white supremacists, neo-Nazi militias, racists, sexists, homophobes and anti-Semites have been legitimized by a new president who “says what I’m thinking.” It will be open season.”

If Trump tries for a single-payer system, he’ll face an implacable wall of resistance from lobbyists and his “own” party in both houses of Congress. They will stop at nothing, up to and including impeachment, if Trump actually tries to serve the interests of those who voted for him in a way that defies the true vested interests in Washington.
Trump is already all too likely to get rolled by the GOP establishment (which hates him for stealing the nomination) if he tries to govern as anything other than a figurehead. Being the specimen that he is, he’s also all too likely to furnish his “fellow” Republicans all the fodder they need by profiting personally from his office and/or stumbling into breaking some law or other.

The self-employed business person who has good years and bad years but not enough good years to finally jump over to the other side worries about both taxes and health care costs. This past summer I was on a mission to buy a pickup. I checked out every make and model out there: Ford 150, Chevy Colorado, GMC Canyon and their larger brethern, Dodge RAM, Nissan, Honda. There was one criterion, it had to fit in the free-standing garage of my 105 year old house. Cars in 1911-1912 (the year of construction) were small so none of these trucks would fit. Length was always the problem but even width-wise I would have about a half inch clearance on the entry door and then only if I folded the mirrors in close to the body.
The salesmen I worked with would always look at me funny like, “what the hell’s this old dude gonna due with this truck?” Before they would even ask, I would offer an explanation that I was running short on longevity and “for once in my life I want to look cool.” I told them “I plan to toss a couple of 2 by 4s in the back sticking out over the tailgate and wear a sweat-stained ball cap (probably Yankees) to establish some truck legitimacy.” The salesmen would look at me oddly, not knowing what to make of my unsolicited admission.
One can easily blow $45-50K on these penis lengtheners. Ultimately I kept my 2002 Ford Focus SVT (6-speed manual shift).
