These two words are the hinge that is swinging American life — and the advanced techno-industrial world, for that matter — toward darkness. They represent an infection in the critical operations of daily life, like a metabolic disease, driving us into disorder and failure. And they are so omnipresent that we’ve failed to even notice the growing failure all around us.

Mostly, these diminishing returns are the results of our over-investments in making complex systems more complex, for instance the replacement of the 37-page Glass-Steagall Act that regulated American banking, with the 848 page Dodd-Frank Act, which was only an outline for over 22,000 pages of subsequent regulatory content — all of it cooked up by banking lobbyists, and none of which replaced the single most important rule in Glass-Steagall, which required the separation of commercial banking from trafficking in securities. Dodd-Frank was a colossal act of misdirection of the public’s attention, an impenetrable smokescreen of legal blather in the service of racketeering.

For Wall Street, Dodd-Frank aggravated the conditions that allow stock indexes to only move in one direction, up, for nine years. During the same period, the American economy of real people and real stuff only went steadily down, including the number of people out of the work force, the incomes of those who still had jobs, the number of people with full-time jobs, the number of people who were able to buy food without government help, or pay for a place to live, or send a kid to college.

When that morbid tension finally snaps, as it must, it won’t only be the Hedge Funders of the Hamptons who get hurt. It will be the entire global financial system, especially currencies (dollars, Euros, Yen, Pounds, Renminbi) that undergo a swift and dire re-pricing, and all the other things of this world priced in them. And when that happens, the world will awake to a new reality of steeply reduced possibilities for supporting 7-plus billion people.

The same over-investments in complexity have produced the racketeering colossus of so-called health care (formerly “medicine”), in case you’re wondering why the waiting room of your doctor’s office now looks exactly like the motor vehicle bureau. Meanwhile, it’s safe to say that the citizens of this land have never been so uniformly unhealthy, even as they’re being swindled and blackmailed by their “providers.” The eventual result will be a chaotic process of simplification, as giant hospital corporations, insurance companies, and overgrown doctors’ practices collapse, and the braver practitioners coalesce into something resembling Third World clinics.

We’re still struggling to even apprehend the damage being done to people by cell phones — and I’m not even referring to whatever microwaves actually do to brain cells. Many find it amusing to see whole streets and campus byways filled with young people staring into their phones. Whatever they’re gaining in endorphin hits from “being connected” is undermined by the immense losses they’re suffering in real social skills and the sinister effects of behavioral conditioning by the programmers of web-based social networks. These failures are being expressed in new social phenomena like flash mobs and the manipulation of college students into Maoist thought police — and these are only the most visible manifestations. A more insidious outcome will be a whole generation’s failure to develop a sense of personal agency in a long emergency of civilization that will require exactly that aptitude for survival.

Among the more popular and idiotic strains of diminishing returns is the crusade to replace gasoline-powered cars with electric-powered vehicles. And for what? To promote the illusion that we can continue to be car-dependent and live in suburbia. Neither of those wishful notions is supported by reality. Both of them will soon yield to the fundamental crisis of capital scarcity. In the meantime, hardly anyone is interested in the one thing that would produce a better outcome for Americans: a return to walkable communities scaled to economic reality.

The convulsions over President Trump’s vivid clowning are just a symptom of the concealed rot eating away at the foundations of American life. What they demonstrate most of all is the failure of this society’s sensory organs — the news media — to ascertain what is actually happening to us. And the recognition of that failure accounts for the current state of the media’s disrepute, even if its critics are doing a poor job of articulating it.

      Getting through the eclipse was easy enough but getting there was a journey. I went to Rexburg Idaho from Seattle, a journey of several hundred miles, For me the eclipse was able to do what eclipses do! Skies were clear and everybody at my campsite had a great time. Nobody was disappointed with the performance. I was struck by the 360 degree sunset or if you prefer, a 360 degree sunrise. I have never seen any descriptions about that phenomenon. A cap of night topped the ring of orange around me.

      Any future such get-togethers will not be so carefree There will be diminishing returns. Gas is cheap now but if in the future it remains cheap it will be because nobody has any money. That is the only way something scarce and desirable can stay cheap. The interstates are in a continual state of being rebuilt but this will not be going on when the economy fails because the tax money will not be there to maintain the roads. The huge crowds that enjoyed this eclipse wont be able to assemble for another.

      I’m in a motel halfway back to Seattle staying the night in Drummond Montana. I fear this solar eclipse will be a symbolic link to future generations which will be tied to a steep sharp decline in the American standard of living.

      The eclipse comes on slowly but right before totality the physical changes around you accelerate. American decline has been happening slowly for a long time now and I fear an sharp increase in that decline will follow the eclipse pattern.

    I’ve read several books about the Khmer Rouge regime of Pol Pot. (My favorite being a book entitled “S-21”; Another entitled “Off the Rails in Cambodia: Into the Dark World of Girls, Guns, and Ganga” about the collapsed Post-Khmer Rouge Cambodia.). Nothing better than reading a pirated book bought from an orphan street kid about Pol Pot and genocide while drinking an ice-cold Angkor beer and eating a weed pizza at a street side bar in Phnom Penh, Cambodia.

      I suspect that the white and black working classes, and soon lower middle classes, would be on the same side too. Keeping them from recognizing this and fighting each other is THE most important task of the mainstream media at the moment, owned and run as it is by oligarchs.

        That fight is still largely a media story. The working classes are too busy working to pay that much attention.
        It’s the college kids with the ‘news’ feeds on their cell phones who think BLM is actually a force to be reckoned with, for instance.
        Most of the ‘protestors’ in Ferguson had to be bused in from other parts of the country.
        I’m not saying there isn’t a divide in this country. I’m just saying it isn’t like people think it is.

            Our African ancestors appear to have been separated into two populations for several tens of thousand years before merging again some 40-50,000 years ago. There’s a theory that the human population may have dropped as low as 2,000 individuals at one point, which would account for the substantial lack of genetic diversity in present-day humans. However different Homo erectus, Neanderthals or others may have been from us, we sapiens are the only human species left, and the differences among us are pretty superficial.

          The Hutus were one of two tribes, and they were the power structure, EF. Of course, the Tutsis had been the rulers under the Belgians, so perhaps 1994 was payback time.

          Protestants and Catholics in Ireland is an interesting thought. Neither is part of the U.K. Ruling class or dominant religion. They did, eventually, stop killing each other.

          Sunni and Shia: it was a month ago when, in a Sunni country, I was told by a Sunni Arab that the Persians are basically not Muslim and are trying to revert to Zoroastrianism. This makes them apostates and worthy of death, and I’m sure the Sunnis would love to get rolling on that score. In Iraq you have disorder added to this. Net result: reconciliation doubtful.

          So, prospects aren’t good, one grants that. The change will never happen if both sides can see each other as enemies, spurred on by a fake news media serving the elite. Still, the Cubs won the World Series last year, so stranger things have happened.

    Very insightful analogy comparing doctor’s waiting rooms with local DMV’s. Those “providers” now have the second biggest racket of them all, proceeded only by war. I was down in the local pub the other day when I realized something. I looked around and realized those people I saw marching in Charlottesville holding tiki torches and chanting “Jews will not replace us,” looked just like the young white guys in the bar. Exactly like them. Look around you people. The Nazis are everywhere. It was an mordant epiphany.

      Except that DMV has been fixed in NY State. I haven’t waited more than 5 minutes in my last few visits there. And their registration renewal is a breeze.

      Government, amazingly, has gotten better in that area. The medical rackets infinitely worse.

        Not in Louisiana and Texas. Every trip is over an hour, the longest pushing two. In Louisiana 1/2 the time they get it wrong and it needs to be redone. Mistaken trailer type or body type or something. They’ve got every mistake in the book down like bartender retorts. There is only one reason to make people wait that long: To preserve those menial jobs. It could be streamlined, but those people would be gone.

            They have armed guards in VA DMV’s now. I used to own a small auto/motorcycle dealership, and on the occasions where I couldn’t send one of my hapless employees, and had to go there myself, it never failed to amaze me at their incompetence, sloth, and apathy.

            And when they say “I’m sorry sir, I can’t do that…” they’re fucking lying. They can literally do anything from their little terminal. I once had a DMV troll print me out a motorcycle title with a 19-digit VIN. (VIN’s have been 17 digits since around the mid 80’….)

            I had a cute girl working for me who was the main DMV-goer. She established a rapport with the trolls at the nearest DMV and would routinely accomplish things that would have otherwise seemed impossible. I think the DMV model is an excellent proxy for government ineptness in many other areas.

          My guess is that expenses are so high inNew York that streamlining the process made sense. In places like LA and TX where labor costs are lower, there’s no driving need to cut labor costs as much.

          Keeping labor costs high leads to progress, I guess.

    Careful, JHK, that sounds like sympathy for the people opposed to the media narrative. In Human Smoke, Nicholson Baker recounts the tale of a some Jews who backed the Nazi party as a way of hedging their bets. So being Jewish won’t protect you from the lynch mob, since it’s not inconceivable that a Jew could support Nazis. Or even “Nazis.”

    The fact is, TPTB do NOT want anyone looking at the collapse that the media wants to ignore.

      Is it really true that nothing about systemic failures have been mentioned by “the powers that be” or “main stream media”? Haven’t there been stories told on television about climate disruption, increasing storms and drought, famine, sea level rise?

      Broadcast networks and cable television have a structural flaw: they are expensive operations; inevitably, coverage is influenced by the need to generate advertising dollars.

      We know you can make vast amounts of money selling fantasies, and television is an incredibly powerful tool for doing exactly that. The commercial purveyors of T.V. air time will never do much to move society toward a better relationship with our environment — the money doesn’t follow.

      The big picture, of how we’ve come to understand our systemic failures, is more complex than many people can make room for in their brains. The changes required to manage our decline sound like being told that they can’t get all the nice things they’ve wanted, and that life (which already seems hard) is likely to get a lot harder.

      A lot of Americans resist that message when it comes up, unless they’ve been reached by good teachers (of all kinds) who dispel them of the fantasies promoted on television.

        I’ve long assumed that the climate change push, based on rising CO2, was in some sense TPTB’s effort to deal with peak oil. If we cut down carbon emissions because we are sacrificing to save the planet it means that we do it out of love for where we live. If we do it because we HAVE to and there is no choice, people might notice there’s something wrong with the system.

        Peak oil (and soon peak coal) means our carbon emissions will go down, no matter what steps we take. We may not even need to take any steps to have carbon emissions drop. It won’t take away from the fact that we cannot pay off debts which rise exponentially while resources to pay them rise geometrically or linearly (or, God help us, go down). It won’t change the fact that a larger and larger share of the population has no meaningful role in the modern economy, since there are fewer and fewer positions that society values enough to pay a living wage.

        We haven’t heard this from the Media. We’ve heard that unemployment is 4.3% or some absurd number, while ignoring the collapse in the percentage of the working age population that is even seeking employment (about 5% of the populace, I’d guess about 12 million people.) Trump exploited this difference between what the media said and what people’s lying eyes told them. Had Obama actually thrown a few Wall Streeters in jail, as JHK has consistently complained, those voters might have rung up in the D column.

        You’re right about Americans resisting the message: the reality of it all is depressing.

    Speaking of health insurance rackets: my wife works in a doctor’s office and handles the billing. She has told me some stories that have curled my hair.

    1) One of the local hospitals has a special health insurance plan through a large insurer for its employees, and the hospital corporation negotiated a condition which says that providers who are not part of their “alliance” are out of network. You have to pay to be part of their so-called alliance.

    2) Recently, a major insurer admitted that they had underpaid some claims over the last year. Instead of re-processing those claims they are going to make it up this coming year by paying more. It is up to the doctor whether to bill last year’s patients for the difference. But here’s the kicker. What if the patients this coming year (2018) have not met their deductible or have different co-pays? It’s not like they are seeing all the same patients.

    The day after the repeal, a soon-to-retire older banker had coffee with my friend. The old guy, the sort who still wore a hat to work, told my friend something along these lines: “this is going to lead to wild speculation and then a big Crash. Our bank will start gambling in stocks. Banks for consumers are supposed to be stodgy, to be careful. I’m going to retire.”

    Nothing in the financial industry, save perhaps the rise of derivatives, has been so injurious to our economy. I want a boring consumer bank again, not a bunch of cowboys herding us off the next cliff.

    I have to say I am a little disappointed by Jim’s refusal to acknowledge that Tesla’s combination of solar tiles coupled with their electric car does in fact represent an alternative to the happy motoring paradigm he so reviles. Imagine a virtually noiseless, smell less highway where all cars are electric and the only things burning fossil fuels are semi’s and other large trucks. Then imagine all that solar energy being utilized. Then imagine fail safe automatic driving cars. No more accidents. No more DWI’s. The day is coming when people will no longer motor themselves, but will be motored. That is what made “Star Wars” so ridiculous on its face: There are still pilots?

        I concur as the price and affordability to purchase a car on credit will be steep. So many people with poor credit are stuck with high interest rates to obtain a vehicle needed to get to work as so many live in the suburbs and X-burbs that have no public transit available

        Timing could not have been worse with the affordable vehicle coming on just as the interurban was designing the landscape. Cleveland Ohio developed a rapid transit light rail that ran from Shaker Hts to downtown and ran mostly in a culvert so vehicle traffic went over and along side. They had a contest to see who traveled the farthest to Downtown and a secretary came in by Conrail from Youngstown to Cleveland weekdays

He’s a well respected economist with a specialization in transportation, and oft-quoted by big media We wound up commiserating about what a colossal folly it was.

      seawolf, do you have ANY idea of the harsh conditions that roads must endure? PV solar panels MUST have UNOBSTRUCTED exposure to the Sun in order to work! Even when there are no cars over them, there will be DUST and DEBRIS that will cover the solar panel roads.

      Roads are currently manufactured with petroleum waste from the bottom of cracking towers and mixed with low-quality sand and fine gravel. A VERY efficient use of waste materials.

      A solar road panel would require highly refined materials that requires an ENORMOUS up front investment of energy to make. As materials are refined, waste is CREATED and such waste cannot be reused. It has to be dumped.

      When current roads need patching, you can send out a couple of GED-educated laborers with a bucket of asphalt and a tamper to fix it. With a solar road, it will be a MAJOR PRODUCTION. You’ll need highly paid techs to remove the broken panel and reinstall a new one. You’ll not only have Diminishing Returns but NEGATIVE RETURNS on a solar road. The LOWEST LEVEL of TECHNOLOGY required to serve a need, or address a problem, is always the best.

      Solar panel roads are the kind of sophomoric idea that a bored teenager in class would daydream about. It only reveals that Elon Musk is an IDIOT with way too much money (and lucky money at that).

      The LOWEST LEVEL of TECHNOLOGY required to serve a need, or address a problem, is always the best. The 80/20 Rule has never failed or been proven wrong. Going beyond that rapidly puts one on the curve to Diminishing Returns.

        Yes, solar panels for roads are not presently feasible. I wonder which of our modern advances didn’t spring from a bored young person’s daydreaming at some point?
        Solar power is a thing. Right now, the thing has limitations. We’ve yet to fully explore those limits, however.
        I remember how frustrating it was, back when I was having to use a computer at work for things it would have been easier and faster to do by hand.
        Would we ever have gotten to the point of the speedy, efficient DMV referenced above, if we didn’t start using the clunky, inefficient technology?
        The lowest level of technology to serve a need depends on what the need is.

      There are unfortunately some major show stoppers. Intermittency, and the stubborn hostility of the laws of physics toward being able to build an affordable, environmentally friendly, light weight, high capacity battery.

        The only way an intermittent source of power can be useful where demand is constant is to have VAST energy storage systems to even out delivery. Also, different types of intermittent power sources would be needed to feed into a common energy storage system.

        But, where the scales of demand are fragmented by many small consumers, it is better for each residence to have its own wind-solar generation system and battery storage. The majority would be semi-independent systems that connect to the grid ONLY to recharge the battery as needed. Grid-tie systems should be outlawed as they already cause a lot of problems when they feed back too much power into the grid. They can be retrofitted to supplying a battery that feeds the house and only connects to the grid for recharge.

        The grid, itself, can be greatly downsized when energy production is generated at the point of use. A LOT of energy is lost in the current matrix of central generation and long distance distribution.

        If most end users generate 90% of their electric needs on site, then the grid itself could be powered by a huge centralized solar-wind-battery hub. That means the backstop power supply could be fueled by COAL. We wouldn’t need to import any more oil and the coal used wouldn’t be enough to cause a meaningful amount of air pollution.

        It’s technically and financially feasible. All that is lacking is the political WILL to make it happen. That’s because certain political interests i.e. Big Oil, Wall Street, and certain rentiers would argue that it can’t work.

      A company that produces the vehicles (autonomous transportation robots) will not likely have 100% failsafe products or product insurance.       Of course asphalt is a byproduct of oil refining,so as gasoline demand drops, the amount of available asphalt will concurrently drop, and rise in price.

      Now, steel will still be made with coal, and we have plenty of coal. So maybe local transport is done via electric bikes at low speed, and long distance via steel rails at high speed?

      There are a tremendous amount of negawatts out there to save, and saving them will take human ingenuity and effort, usually with no rare earth metals required.

      One is never going to eliminate the corporate risk and it’s assessments between software functionality and failure in commerce where profit is contrasted with the harm that is potentially caused to a third party who agrees to use the device or service. One can get close to zero, but it can never be zero. It’s factored in.

      The cars will no longer be cars as you see them. They will become robotic transportation devices (robots) driven by ever changing software and that software will have bugs which crash.

    Regarding health “care”, calling it that and not “medical treatment” is a strategic misuse of language by the marketing department of the health care provider empire. “Care” is such a warm, comforting word. Who could be against care?

    In fact, the main reason the medical industry can be called “caring” is that they care about money.

      You HAVE to go back to the HMO Act of 1973 to understand the deep core of why “health care” is so dysfunctional today. One must then study and contemplate the concept of medical care under the paradigm of FDR’s New Deal.

      In the briefest of nutshells, medical care under the New Deal paradigm was regarded as a dividend of modern progress, not a commodity to be sold to the highest bidder. It was delivered for the purpose of public health and public sanitation. Because patients paid the doctor directly in cash, there were very few middlemen between the doctor and patient. The morality of the time compelled medicine to be delivered for social good.

      Under the HMO Act, medical care was turned completely on its head. Instead of a trustworthy institution serving the Public Good, it became a commodity and delivered through a profit-driven business model. Health Care became just another business racket which used income flows to leverage financial paper. In order to kite that paper and pay off rentiers, the expenses were passed off to insurance companies. They also floated that paper through insurance premiums while skimming off their share.

      Until that is addressed, it is impossible to fix health care.

          The HMO was created to relieve the State from any burden of ensuring the supply of quality medical care and turned that burden over to private cartels. Seeing a doctor was a LOT EASIER before the HMO’s!

          Before HMO’s, medical care was regulated to serve the Public Health. Profits were collected to pay the doctors, staff, and to maintain the hospitals. They were NOT collected to pay rentiers or float financial paper.

          The patient paid the doctor directly and hospitals only charged what it actually cost to provide the care received. VERY FEW people couldn’t afford to get care. Most of them used home remedies which were still well known and useful.

          So, under the cover of serving the poorest, the entire medical establishment was turned into the perfect racket.

          I remember when the HMO Act was passed and the dire warnings of surrendering medical care to the caprices of the market. Those warnings all came to pass and the later consequences even surpassed those fears.

    I wonder why Bernie isn’t yelling about the DWS scandal. After all, she done him wrong when he tried running as the alternative to the corruption that is the DNC.
    He seems curiously uninterested in seeing that corruption, which he experienced firsthand, exposed and cleaned up.
    Could this be because of the ‘leverage’ the Democrats have on him? I thought the ‘leverage’ had to do with the financial improprieties his wife committed when she helped run that college into the ground. That cat’s out of the bag, so it must be something else.
    It looks, at this point, like the Democrats were paying the Awan family to dig up dirt on the Democrats, and perhaps they sold data they stole to foreign governments.
    You’d think the topnotch genius investigative reporters at the NYT would be all over this story.

It happened on his watch and I’m not defending him but the truth is it was a long drawn out process that began in the 1980s or maybe late 1970s in fits and starts. The key movers were primarily Republican bankers and politicians, many of whom who were part of Reagan’s kitchen cabinet who got him elected. Clinton and a lot of other Democrats and Ivy League types went along for the ride….

        Bill repealed the Glass-Steagall Act because he was a globalist, and he had to know that damage it could do, but he also had to know who he was doing it for.

    Complexity requires people who have the ability to deal with complexity. You have to be able to feed and maintain a massive administrative clerisy to understand the ins and outs and infinitely varied shades of gray in those 22,000 pages.

    Is the education system capable of producing such people? Of course, seeing as bankers are too big to jail, then why bother with a regulatory bureaucracy at all? Why go through the exercise of inscribing those 22,000 pages?

    Well it’s ALL for appearances sake. This isn’t being cynical. The question is never whether you’re wide of the mark because you’re cynical or TOO cynical, the question is always whether you’re being cynical enough.

    Given the Brazilianization of Washington, the intent of such a governmental edifice – complete with Roman-style buildings with Roman lettering to lend it an appearance of legitimacy and gravitas – would be to provide stress-free, work-free “jobs” to the political class.

    A warning: the laws of physics will not be mocked. Entropy brooks no dissent. Those imposing monuments will sink back into the malarial swamp that was Washington, the vast groupings of scribes that pretended to fulfil urgent governmental functions will be disbanded and those 22,000 pages will end up as ass-wipe in latrines.

      We’ve passed peak medicine in this country.
      The healthcare industry has completely failed to make the transition from dealing with diseases of the developing world to dealing with diseases of modern society.
      If you go for treatment of a complaint related to the way we live now, they will try to treat you for something else.
      You are better off staying away, unless you have something they know how to treat.
      The trouble is, you will still be paying a substantial portion of your income for “access” to medical care that does not exist.

        I was fired by my primary care physician a few weeks ago. Reason: I am “non-compliant”, that is, I do not obey doctor’s orders very well.

        It’s ok. I was about to fire the good gentleman anyway. You see, about 18 months ago he tried to pressure me into going on insulin for my Type 2 diabetes. He said that would get me “fixed”, to use his unfortunate terminology. Trouble is, insulin injections do not cure the diabetes; they do not prolong the life of the diabetic; they do cause weight gain, which lowers the patient’s will to exercise; and they make some overpaid pharm executives and stockholders even richer.

        There are some interesting approaches that may actually cure Type 2. One that I am trying is intermittent fasting, which I started June 3. In this, I select a four hour window during which I take meals, and fast the other 20 hours each day. So far I have lost about 10 pounds and have had some good glucose readings. I do not test every day. (That’s one of my many areas of “non-compliance” with medical recommendations. )

        I will keep you all posted on how this goes, assuming I survive. So-called treatment for Type 2 diabetes is a multi-billion dollar industry, and, as Beryl says, the condition is totally caused by how we live today. I’m sure you all understand why the medical-industrial complex has no interest in a cure that does not involve drugs or doctors.

    It was for two things. It was for ACCESS. Bill and Hillary have got high-level contacts all over the world and they have the ability to call people and have those people pick up the phone and listen to the sweet nothings the Clintons whisper in their ears. Of course the whispers aren’t sweet nothings, it’s all about favors and money. And if those people that cough up a quarter million for a speech happen to call Bill or Hill they will have every expectation that their call will be answered and if they ask Bill or Hill to talk to some high level functionary then Bill or Hill will be obliged to do so.

    The second thing all that money was for was as payment for a job well done. Deregulation, the repeal of Glass Steagall was a massive thing. Those millions to Bill and Hill was Wall Street’s message to the political class: do our bidding like the Clintons and we will take care of you.

    You’re right about something else: Bill and Hill are Globalists. They give a shit about America and Americans. They identify with what they see as their own class. Whether it’s because it’s an intellectual fashion or whether they’re convinced of the Globalist set of ideas makes not a whit of difference.

    A report from 80 miles away of the zone of totality. Pretty much a non-event…like the miracle of childbirth. 90% occlusion, temperature dropped a few degrees, visibility good to 1 mile+…trumpets did not sound…the Earth did not open up and swallow the unbelievers.

    However, on another note…a web site populated by lay astronomers opines that the error in computing the distance of the Oct 12 asteroid could put the rock as close as 4300 miles from the Earth, while assuring their readership that it will NOT impact the planet. I wonder what a rounding error looks like in those very complex calculations?

I had an experience like this a little boy: I found thunderstorms overwhelming, but I could deal with them. What I found unbearable was dry thunderstorms where it would just flash and boom without rain. Without using the word, I seemed to feel the gods were punishing the Earth – a tremendous feeling of cosmic wrongness in other words and profound sense of relief when it the rain finally came.

    He makes some interesting points about Black Lives Matter and the slanders people apply to them (as opposed to the Antifa/black bloc types, who really do sound like violent gits who need to get a life). Emphasis added where appropriate.

    – Y’all should hear about my experience with BLM at the Boston Anti-Nazi Rally. 1/
    – First, BPD did an outstanding job of managing conflicts. 2/
    – Police escorted Nazis to and from the rally. Did not prevent interactions but stood close by to prevent rioting. 3/
    – BLM also escorted Nazis. Surrounded them to prevent fights. 4/
    – I want that to be crystal clear. BLM marshals were *preventing* fights from breaking out. 5/
    – BLM organizers have said over and over again: if a rally turns violent, POC will be targeted. Don’t start none. 6/
    – At one point they were escorting a Nazi out of the rally near where I was standing. 7/
    – Nazi dropped his flag. I snatched for it. He picked it up. I yanked at it. 8/
    – The BLM marshal next to me whupped the back of my head. “DON’T!” 9/
    – At that moment he stopped me from possibly sparking a riot. 10/
    – I was stupid. I was ready to escalate. BLM *stopped* me. 11/
    – This is no surprise to anyone who has actually been to a BLM event or worked with them. 12/
    – But the “BLM are terrorists” narrative persists. 13/
    – I want everyone to understand just how bullshit this narrative is. 14/
    BLM is not starting riots. They’re stopping them. 15/15

    Isn’t Trump supposed to address the nation this evening? Rumor is that he’s sending more troops to Afghanistan. If so, then the Trump presidency is truly over. (Even the just fired Steve Bannon said so).

    I’m still waiting for the next false flag event which will be used to justify an assault on Teheran. If it happens though, the alt-Left and alt-Right may actually come together. With Obama out of office, it’s now safe for the Left to turn anti-war again, and the Alt Right voted for Trump to get us out of wars – not start new ones.

I remember the same statements made when the US was killing millions of Vietnamese (and still lost). So now he will unleash the full might of the US military (more MOABS maybe). Only four thousand more troops will do it, when there were 100,000 in Afghanistan during McCain’s surge, and they couldn’t get the job done. When Trump gave his speech before a military audience he looked like a defeated man who did not believe his own words. Let the carnage continue!

    JHK, the Dodd/Frankensteinization of Glass/Steagall is a perfect metaphor for what “smart” people are going to do to our electric power grid with “smart grid” technologies. People are so enchanted by clever algorithms that work perfectly in computer simulations that they are just absolutely sure it will work if you connect it to our already-too-complex electrical grid.

    Everything must be obfuscated to protect the IP of the oh-so-clever inventors of these technologies (and more-importantly the profits of the employers of those same inventors), and the algorithms themselves are not at all intuitive even if they were open-source, that the folks who wind up with this shit sandwich and have to operate and maintain the equipment will not understand it and not know what to do when it fails to live up to expectations.

    Even if we somehow overcome the limitations of exponential-growth-forever-without-end-amen of sources of generation, getting that power in some usable form to a place where it can be used (e.g. your house or your office or your new Tesla’s battery charger) is fast approaching the practical edge of maximum transmission and distribution of that power.

    And no. Solar PV panels on the rooftop will not cut it. For those who think it will they need to do the math and then realize just how many square feet of PV you need to get a certain amount of kwh per day, and how much of that is lost in the charge/discharge process of the batteries, before any of that sunlight appears as torque on the drive shaft of that beautiful looking car…

When these clever algorithms are the very cause of the grid going down and killing thousands of people during the middle of a summer heat wave or the middle of a winter cold snap, nobody will understand enough about what happened to pin the blame on the cleverness.

      I’m late to the party with this post. Electric cars are out. The technology seems insufficient to me. Even if they did work I wouldn’t want one as I love polluting internal combustion engines on my old antique British bike and in my car. Solar is very viable for powering your home. Even if it doesn’t supply all the power needed it could be a really nice supplement that would drastically lower the power bill. But, alas solar panels are made needlessly expensive by greedy utility companies and politicians. Maybe someday soon the technology for panels, batteries etc. will be perfected. Excuse me while I get on my old beezer, twist the throttle and spew some carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. PS this is for Bruce E and his 8/21/17 3:48 post.

            Seawolf, this is an interesting conjecture, that Rubio, Cruz, Jeb!, and others pulled their punches instead of winning the primary, and then that HRC pulled her punches instead of winning the election.

            Was that simple miscalculation on HRC’s part, maybe she thought she would narrowly win without using this information to take Trump down, or are you suggesting that maybe she (and everyone else involved) wanted Trump to become President for some specific set of reasons?

            I read an article recently that was basically, “be careful what you wish for,” in that the state of things today had HRC won would not be any better, and in fact much worse for her in terms of any sort of political legacy she might have wanted to leave to history. By losing she can maybe be regarded as the “See? I told you so!” warning about what was going to follow, and decades of mismanagement by Washington by both Dems and GOP avoids all the blame when scapegoat Trump goes down. Then they never have to own their own mistakes, and are never held accountable to their role in the fall of the American Empire.

            Or did you perhaps have some other role in mind for Trump, other than scapegoat?

    Viewing Sunday political programs confirmed my assumption that Bannon leaving the White House is a part of Trump’s package deal with the sane part of the establishment about the end of the RussiaGate and stopping unraveling of the civil war.

    All the media outlets of the top ten reduced the anti-Trump rhetoric to almost zero, and the media of the second dozen also paid attention to this, obviously coming to similar conclusions, but for the time being is afraid of voicing them openly.

    In particular, they all drew attention to the fact that Congressman Schiff, the leader of the anti-Trump pack in an interview with CNN never mentioned RussiaGate (investigation of Trump’s relations with Russia).

    There is no doubt that when Bannon gave “accidental” interview to American Perspective, he already knew about this agreement and in fact this interview was the first action of the president, whose authority is not longer disputed, but no one supports him in the White House except the family, since all his advisers were forced to leave.

    But Trump, giving the final interview after Charlottesville, did not look defeated and capitulation was signed rather by his enemies.

    What makes the philosophical foundations of Orthodoxy even more relevant, since the views of chief strategist of the White House, Bannon are more characteristic of the Church of England, and Trump clearly gravitates toward the Orthodoxy.

    You know Jim, back in the early ’70’s we had a saying called SUBAKIS, See It Big And Keep It Simple. It was a great way to approach problem solving, but then engineers were still in charge not scum like Blankenfein and Soros. Overcomplicating everything from washing machines to toothbrushes by installing microchips and advanced sensory technologies into them may be great for the profit margin, but my 4 pound engineering hammer has been of far more use than most of the computerized crap that barely lasts a year before it is either outdated or craps out altogether. But then consumers are made to consume aren’t they?

    You can hardly blame the scum bag politicians and bankers for cheating us all out of our income because it’s not like they have any real marketable skills or talents themselves besides deceit now do they? Besides Americans do not need paychecks as long as they have credit cards or welfare checks. It’s not like the minions really care anyway because they are far more interested in tearing down a statue and a country and taking a dump in the ladies bathroom or having their carcasses tattooed to make them look like an alley cat or a baboon.

    Regardless of what one thinks of the Confederacy and whether Lincoln wanted to free black people (He didn’t.), one has to respect and admire the Confederate Generals as great leaders who inspired tremendous sacrifice in their men. They were extremely courageous and were loyal to their comrades and to their respective states, and they were devoted pious Christians.

    They were not the Na…zi’s so portrayed by today’s corrupt MSM. In fact, they were fighting against Empire and for a decentralized association of states more attuned to the vision of the Founding Fathers. It was Lincoln who more closely resembled a fascist dictator shutting down newspapers, imposing martial law, committing genocide of 900,000 young men, and furthering the cause of Empire (the “Union”) and corporate interests (the railroads). Lincoln was a former corporate lawyer for the railroads.

      Prior to the Civil War, the term “The United States” didn’t exist. Only after the Civil War did American start to use the term “The United States” signifying the creation of a strong central government and the beginning of an Empire. The original conception of the Founding Fathers and Americans was a loose association of states with the states retaining all rights except for the very narrow rights given to a very limited central government under the Constitution. The original conception of the US Government was destroyed in 1865 and Empire created. The wealthy plantation owners of the South wanted strong states which maximized their power in state governments. Lincoln and the railroads wanted to break up state power to create an Empire (“Union”) in order to run railroad lines across the continent. Now the US Empire has matasticized into a global Empire.

          The semi-private corporation we’ve all lived under since 1874 is named, “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, INC.” It is a foreign For-Profit Corporation that took on the name of USA, Inc. and ADOPTED the Constitution as a set of BY-LAWS.

          The Constitution only had legal power while the signers were still alive. The last one died in 1826 and Abraham Lincoln buried it with the Civil War. It is now a body of by-laws which can be applied or ignored by the REAL OWNERS of this country.

          Or this part:

          From what I reread it says “united States of America”. Perhaps the meaning of the uncapitalized “u” escapes you.

          The south’s error was in actually believing this stuff, or rather expecting their leaders to believe [ by-live ] it.

      It had to do with states rights, taxation, trade and the souths deep water ports.
      The South did not need the north but the north needed the south!
      The South could and did buy goods from other imperial powers like England which figured heavily into the civil war.
      In fact the North was the manufacturing base but had a hard time growing enough food to feed themselves.

    Record number of people shot in Chicago this weekend.

    The way I see it, after 50 years of Civil Rights Legislation, $10 trillion spent on welfare, and affirmative action out the yazoo, here we are in 2017 and there’s 70 shot this weekend in Chicago. What went wrong? It can’t be the libs fault, with all their good intentions and heartfelt do goodism, and citing the blacks themselves would amount to ‘blaming the victim.’ Well, scapegoats are needed, and the scapegoats are monuments and statues erected 100 years ago to mark the deaths of 250,000 dead Confederate soldiers. Its the fault of those monuments, and what we think they represent, why it was all for naught. That seems to be the simplistic media explanation. As for orgs like BLM and Antifa, I’m not sure what they want. All whites dead? To start over at year 0, with themselves on top, with all us pipsqueaks under their boot. I’m not sure yet how formidable they actually are. The possibility always exists they will link up with ISIS, rendering them real battlefield experience which they could bring into towns and cities across America. Or maybe they’re just pissants who will melt away when they meet their fist platoon of Marines on the streets of Dallas or Oakland. We’ll have to wait and see.

            The distinction is crucial. It is the defense of individual rights where the Constitution derives its authority to overrule the sovereignty of the state (the flip-side of the 10th Amendment, if you will).

            That said, President Donald Trump has turned this fairly strong-left-leaning progressive into a 10th Amendment conservative. I’m ready for California and New York to secede (peacefully, if that could be pulled off) from the “Union,” and go their own way and let the old Confederacy go fuck off. We’ll absorb their escaping minority populations and build a better world and they can just starve when their local municipal funding through fines for minor traffic violations and other minor “crimes” runs out of black people to disproportionately tap for money…

            I’m guessing if that were to happen, Trump would not feel the slightest hesitation or perceive the slightest bit of hypocrisy to go all Abraham Lincoln on us for doing so…

            But yes — Trump makes secession as an impulse much more understandable to us libtards in the North. Maybe that’s where we find common ground.

    Of course, war and the large military establishments are the greatest sources of violence in the world. Whether their purpose is defensive or offensive, these vast powerful organizations exist solely to kill human beings. We should think carefully about the reality of war. Most of us have been conditioned to regard military combat as exciting and glamorous – an opportunity for men to prove their competence and courage. Since armies are legal, we feel that war is acceptable; in general, nobody feels that war is criminal or that accepting it is criminal attitude. In fact, we have been brainwashed. War is neither glamorous nor attractive. It is monstrous. Its very nature is one of tragedy and suffering.

    Modern warfare waged primarily with different forms of fire, but we are so conditioned to see it as thrilling that we talk about this or that marvelous weapon as a remarkable piece of technology without remembering that, if it is actually used, it will burn living people.       This kind of pacifism is expected from Buddhist Monks. It just opens the door to all kinds of tyranny. Thankfully the Buddhist Monks of Burma are wiser and advocate that the Muslims be pushed into the sea. Certainly the Buddha was wiser: never conflating the two states of Lay believers and Monastics. Peace is the duty of the latter, not the former.

      Over the centuries many Christian missionaries have been killed by Tibetan Monks. They have a ritual where they can leave off being a monk for awhile to do such deeds. And the Dalai Lama himself has even come out against the Muslim invasion of Europe. That took a bit of courage, so he’s not all bad.

          DA stop pretending that people like Janos or JimInFlorida are here for a rational conversation. Both of them signal their true intents when they insist on capitalizing the “W” in “White,” and by doing so they are bringing deliberate emphasis to a symbology that might as well be a swastika.

          They are not here to engage in conversation. They are here to provoke specific emotional reactions designed to undermine their opponents’ arguments by baiting them into an emotional response that undercuts anything intelligent they may have said before. In that, they are largely successful.

          They must do this, because their own arguments are non-existent and have no rational basis, so they must take their opponents down to their level and make it look like “both sides” or “all sides” are equal. The moral equivalency becomes an intellectual equivalency, basically shutting down any attempt at rational conversation.

            Janos and Jim are symptomatic of the core issue bedeviling America. In many ways blacks are still in chains, except they are prison chains and not slaver’s chains. States rights are fine, but when Louisiana incarcerates 5 times more people than Maine, the Feds should step in and see why. Statistics must be used to determine the health of the nation, not perceptions. I work at a Six Sigma company and the mantra is listen to the numbers, let the numbers tell you what to do. That should be the way business is conducted. There is no penalty for racism. That has to change. Diversity to a certain extent is attempting it, but in ways makes it worse, because my halls are filled with Indians.

Remember our daddies that went to work at the mill or plant and were able to support a wife and family in a house with TV, telephone, indoor plumbing and a car.     As Jim sez, that giant re-direction of wealth and income upwards served to buy out Washington and other national capitol legislatures and political parties, not just American. And this power was used to re-draw laws and treaties to re-configure world investment to exploit slave wage labor.

      The Eisenhower tax program was only for show to convince the gullible that taxes were fair. In actuality, the maximum 91% rate (not 95%) had so many loopholes and deductions that no one paid close to that. In fact, the tax program was unfair to the middle class because many of the deductions only were available to the wealthy, and the middle-class rates were higher than today’s.

    All the current to-do about Washington, Lincoln and Jefferson slavery facts have been known forever and never hidden. Confederate statues have always been visible since they were erected.

    So I have to ask myself, why now? Why wasn’t this made a big deal of in the 1960’s counterculture revolution? Why now? Why not in 1954, say? Why not during the old civil rights movement? It appears to me to be obvious manipulation; something’s not right about the whole thing.

    I’d like to say I agree with the new opinions about the above three and about the statues. For me, Blacks seeing these statues is akin to having to see statues of concentration camp commandants. So I sympathize, but still, something’s amiss here. People in the background are pulling strings.

    Is it because the time is now right, as the American (White) public has declined?

    Elrond, the Taliban have a safe haven in Pakistan because Pushtun territory straddles both countries and because the border is highly permeable.

    So you can kill every Taliban in Afghanistan and seal the border such that not one Taliban flea passes and you will still have Pushtun and their Taliban fighters sitting happy and unmolested in Pakistan. And you will still have Pushtun in Afghanistan as a ready source for Taliban recruitment because, as we know, with this wonderful new world of electronic media, ideas travel fast.

    As it is the US is embroiled in a place that’s seen by multiple neighboring countries as their own backyard and they all meddle to secure their own advantage. Americans can flail in Afghanistan until the end of time and get nowhere.

    Americans unfortunately see foreign locales through a distorting lens of what concerns Americans. But what concerns Americans won’t be shared by people in those foreign places. Americans think that Afghanistan is all about the US. It isn’t, not even remotely. Those damned turbaned foreigners have got their own agendas.

    The suits in the Sate Dept think they know a lot. People like Leon Panetta say stuff like “we know how to do this”. No, they don’t know how to do this. Their calamitous results speak for themselves.

    According to Bob Woodward’s book “Obama’s Wars”, Obama early in his presidency wanted to pull out of Afghanistan, but basically the US military told Obama to fuck off. As a compromise, Obama promised to do “The Surge”, sending in 30,000 more US ground troops. Obama set a deadline for withdrawal if “The Surge” didn’t work. Again, the Generals told Obama to fuck off.

    Curious to me how in these times when the religiosity of “established religions” has been abandoned there’s such attraction to what can only be considered proto or pseudo religions in that they pronounce aim of creating a universal epiphany among all societies and people that instantly attains peace and harmony not different from what is describe as prevailing following Christ’s “second coming”. Example:

    Not different, that is, from all Utopian schemes that have been hatched by countless numbers of messiahs in contradiction of the harsh realities evident through historical record of societal conflict over contradictory beliefs, values and resources

    Curious too how “political speak” today has taken on a religious like intensity which contends distinction between heaven/hell absolutes rather than the unsavory choices imposed by the ostensible limitations of reality. Seems to me that the the increasing harshness of choices now being forced by overpopulation attempting to squeeze through an ever narrowing window of survival is triggering a reflex in the human psyche to withdraw into fanciful, quasi mystical sanctums for the kind of relief that religion has always offered against reality.

    America’s political scene today is splintered along lines based less on scholarly objective reading of history but rather on plucking selective pieces which enforce respective justifying mythology.

      One can hope that a supernatural awakening will let the races discover the true meaning of what Labor Day represents.

      Then, by class consciousness, we can find common ground and join forces to fight our common enemy. The Top 1% and their mercenaries in management.

      There’s enough for everybody to be comfortable, including rewards to those who innovate. If there is scarcity, it is because far too much money is chasing the Top 1%. No one person or faction should have the wherewithal to buy political favors, thus distorting the political process and setting up rentier schemes that steal from the domestic worker in countless ways.

      If I were POTUS, I’d see to it that the Dept. of Labor is fully staffed 100% with a cross-section of Labor Union people and to codify that requirement into the Department’s charter. The NLRB would remain independent but,maintain quarterly meetings with the DOL to ensure coordination of efforts towards the common goal of protecting American workers from abuse and safety problems in the workplace, foreign dumping, and other things that negatively affect domestic employment..

      Nope. Not treason. What Lincoln did was consistent with his views that the Union was necessary, that the singularity of “We the people” and the protection of the rights of individuals was more important to uphold than the limited sovereignty of a multiplicity of states. What he did was true to an honest and faithful interpretation of the Constitution of the United States of America and a reflection of a belief with a practical level of conviction attached to it. I don’t perceive hypocrisy at the base of Lincoln’s intentions.

      Do I still believe that a singular Union of “We the people” and protection of individual rights is more important than the sovereignty of the state? Yes, I do. My inclinations to desire secession from the circus in Washington are based in emotion, and I recognize them as such. If I actually went out and tried my best to get New York and/or California and/or Massachusetts and/or a handful of other states to secede, based on this emotion, then yes–that would be hypocrisy to my stated belief. I would both hesitate before doing so as well as recognize that hypocrisy in myself were I to pursue such a project.

    All the President’s Speech

    Yesterday Trump delivered a speech about Afghanistan, in which he said that he had a plan for this unfortunate country, but he would not tell anyone, except he clearly emphasized promise to attack. Then, as the Russians say, battle in Crimea, all in smoke, nothing is clear!

    When the smoke cleared a bit, personally I saw that the fight was still going on in the Crimea.

    Indeed, at first it became clear that Trump was going to attack nuclear Pakistan, for this he was going to help nuclear India on the verge of a nuclear war with China, which could receive Iranian oil only through Pakistan if the United States blocked the Strait of Malacca.

    And for some reason it was remembered that the US wants to force nuclear China to nuclearly disarm the nuclear North Korea, which supplied Pakistan with missiles necessary for the delivery of nuclear munitions, for which the maneuvers imitating the US and South Korea’s invasion of the North are being conducted at its border. It became clear that Trump did not want to announce the Anaconda-2.0 plan, only this time the strangulation of not the USSR, but of China.

    But since the reason for not announcing of this plan was Afghanistan, in which the US Army has been fighting for 17 years, and Pakistan and Iran are allies of China, the territory of Russia is the only way to supply the American Army for reasonable money.

    Otherwise, it will be necessary to carry supplies either by air, that is, 10 times more expensive or with three overloads through Georgia, Azerbaijan, the Caspian Sea, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan, which is more expensive only about 6 times than the way through Russia.

    The problem is that when the inexperienced President Trump proposed Putin bargain “lifting sanctions – a betrayal of China, Iran and Syria,” it turned out that he does not think about it at all.

    Hillary brought the relationship of Russia and the United States to such an asshole that Putin could offer Trump in response to his really warm feelings toward Russia only the absence of nuclear bombing of American cities. And in this situation, Russia can not refuse such allies as China, and apart from regional armistice in Syria, assistance in supplying the US Army in Afghanistan is almost the only opportunity for Russia and the United States to cooperate in the fight against Islamic fundamentalism.

    Unfortunately, the Americans and the so-called political elite of the United States are completely unaware of these circumstances and want to arrange a second Cold War, stupidly thinking that it will end just like the first. Therefore, before Trump begins to somehow change the trend, which Minister Lavrov very diplomatically calls “the Obama administration”, Americans should get really scared, and Kim Jong-un in this sense made an outstanding contribution to the cause of World Peace.

    In addition, it would be nice for Americans to remember who was an ally of America in World War II, and who was her enemy, and I can testify that, without additional reminders, Americans remember who bombed them on September 11, 2001, and no Michael Moore could convince them otherwise.

    In this case, conspiracy theories only add to the Americans’ anger, but do not change anything, since the knowledge of what happened is based on the supersensible perception of the collective conscious of the US. And the fact that it was awakened under the influence of this event personally for me is unquestionable, although the very fact of its existence has become a big surprise.

    Actually, it became clear already in 1998, when the newspaper Le Nouvel Observateur asked the chief architect of the US victory in the Cold War whether it was worth provoking the Afghan war if this led to the creation of Islamic fundamentalism in the person of Osama bin Laden. And the second time I felt the presence of a collective conscious in America on the day of his assassination, which brings us back to Trump’s speech and to Zbig’s answer to the question of Le Nouvel Observateur.

    He replied that the destruction of the USSR can not be compared with the appearance of Al Qaida, which from his point of view was then no more than a regional force, but Trump was elected the president of the United States by the people who categorically disagree with him.

    And Trump in his speech yesterday showed that he does not intend to abandon his main election promise to abandon the policy of “regime-change” and focus on America’s national interests. And they – American National Interests – are the main ally of Russia, much more important than the friendly feelings of Trump, especially since 2 years after this interview, Osama bin Laden very theatrically denied Zbig’s thesis about the regionalism of Islamic fundamentalism, while the modernization of the Russian Strategic and Submarine Missile Force neutralizes the American joy from the disintegration of the USSR, especially as recent events have shown, the availability of means for delivering nuclear warheads by N. Korea, and the very existence of these warheads are also the result of the collapse of the USSR.

    Now at US are aimed far more warheads than in 1989, plus the Islamic State and the need to compete with such an economic giant as China.

      I’ve never denied that I, personally, have benefited and still do benefit from slavery. I live in the North, who benefited more from slavery (and maintaining slavery legal in the South while illegal in the North, which was important) than did the South, and whose historical dominance and economic inertia still gets leveraged over the South to this day (think Wall Street, and import/export, and where the banks send all the money they loan into existence).

      In fact, there’s a name for this continued benefit from my heritage: it’s called privilege.

      The solution to privilege is not mass suicide of the privileged. The solution is (1) to recognize that privilege exists, (2) to recognize where it came from, (3) recognize the privilege as fundamentally unjust, and (4) work towards justice and a time where no person is privileged based on where they were born and/or what color their skin is and/or whether they are XY or XX or XXY or XYY chromosomed and/or how those chromosomes combined with other things combine to form one’s self-views concerning gender and sexuality and/or who raised them and what religious/areligious/irreligious views surrounded them when they grew up and/or what kinds of foods they are really good at making because they were taught by three generations how to do it. (Well, that last part could privilege a restaurateur over someone else without the privilege causing injustice.)

        -Not getting arrested, or even shot, that one time when I was 19 years old driving erratically and recklessly with beer in the trunk privilege

        About the only kind of privilege I don’t have is the exaggerated kind like your man Trump was born with, where I was given a huge company to run worth tens/hundreds of millions of dollars and then patted myself on the back because I didn’t run it into the ground.

In each little plot they planted a combination of plants. Some plots had only one plant, some had two, some had three and so on and so forth. Then they stress tested it. Denied the plants water.       Indeed md, I have had CHS on my favorites for quite a while and he always makes a lot of sense. Unfortunately for the bulk of the Common American Idiots, they have been diverted, distracted, doped and drunked up to the point where they cannot even look into their own underpants and understand WTF is actually in there in the first place. There are far too many that are no longer capable of doing anything but what they are told to do by the talking heads on the screen and even worse, there are far too many that absolutely DO NOT CARE about ANYTHING at all. This nation has far too many people in it that are completely and totally worthless and can no longer be carried on the backs of those who are still willing and capable of shouldering the burden. Those of us who see it are greatly saddened to realize it, but insurmountable tasks set against undefeatable odds can only result in failure. All we can do is “quit ye like men”.     Richard Weikart’s book “Hitler’s Religion” gives an excellent portrayal of Hitler as a cynical politician who manipulated people and religion. If some US politicians are anything like Hitler, then they would have known that the Great Society programs and the Civil Rights Movement would fail miserably “from the Git-Go.” LBJ cynically referred to The Voting Rights Act as “The Nigger Bill”.

            Who says Franco said this? Did he say it in English? Or write it without commas? The quote reminds me of the spurious (and even more illiterate) one by Marx circulating just after the financial crash about eight years ago.

            Franco appreciated Hitler’s help in defeating the lunatic Left in Spain but it was not clear in 1936 how Hitler would turn out. This quote is alleged to have been made in 1945 when Spain was under serious threat of Allied intervention, but they were saved by the Cold War. Franco was careful not to stick his neck out for Germany during WW2 despite Hitler’s pleas. His neutrality was a great benefit for the Allies, especially in denying Germany Gibraltar. Franco was very much a Catholic traditionalist not a fascist. Have a look at my link above to get an idea of Hitler’s beliefs.

            That book would be John Cornwell’s Hitler’s Pope. I read his Breaking Faith which is obsessed with the damage done to the Church by his imagined papal dictatorship. I took notes on it because I had planned it as one of the texts I would examine in a book I was thinking of writing about extraverts and political correctness. I find it very hard to imagine him setting out to exonerate the Vatican. (My link above touches on this book too.)

            And the idea that the Vatican is some shady, ‘reactionary’ (I see this quaint adjective has been given a new lease of life) organization which seeks at every turn to sabotage the progressives laughable. Nearly every Sunday the priests in my church (Franciscans) preach about the need to welcome immigrants. The bishops and the Pope are no different. So who is this ‘Vatican’? A few clerks who leak the odd bit of scandal to the press and who doubtless share the same progressive views themselves.

Christ should have taken the bread and offered mankind freedom from hunger instead of freedom of choice.

            The second temptation was to perform a miracle. Satan placed Christ upon a pinnacle in Jerusalem and told him to prove that he was the messiah by throwing himself off it. If Christ were really God’s son, the angels would bear him up and not allow him to die. Christ refused, telling Satan that he could not tempt God. Beaten, Satan departed. But the Grand Inquisitor says that Christ should have given people a miracle, for most people need to see the miraculous in order to be content in their religious faith. Man needs a supernatural being to worship, and Christ refused to appear as one.

            The third temptation was power. Satan showed Christ all the kingdoms in the world, and offered him control of them all. Christ refused. The Grand Inquisitor says that Christ should have taken the power, but since he did not, the Church has now has to take it in his name, in order to convince men to give up their free will in favor of their security.

            The Grand Inquisitor tells Christ that it was Satan, and not Christ, who was in the right during this exchange. He says that ever since the Church took over the Roman Empire, it has been secretly performing the work of Satan, not because it is evil, but because it seeks the best and most secure order for mankind.

    Turns out the distinguished group of citizens who pulled down the Civil War monument in Durham NC was part of a Marxist/Leninist fringe group who, among other things, support NKorea in its ‘struggle against imperialism’.

    There’s supposed to be all this racial acrimony right now — Sharpton said yesterday the whole situation can blow up at any minute — but I’m not feeling it with the black people I work with. I’m not hearing it either from these black dudes — many of them hard cases — when they talk amongst each other. I’m not saying its all peaches and cream, no. So I’m thinking all this might be just another manufactured ploy by some democrats and their allies in the MSM, similar to the Russian investigation, to cause trouble in the country adn make Trump look bad.     Donald Trump’s father had Alzheimer’s. That makes Trump twice as likely to get it. At age 65 odds are 1 in 9 that you have it. For Trump that doubles to 1 in 4. Every 5 years it doubles again. At 70 years of age the odds are 1 in 2 that he is suffering from Alzheimer’s, a 50/50 shot. A coin toss. The far right has elected a crazy man, a provably crazy man. I shudder to think what will happen if he is removed from office because he is nuts. As it stands everyone is walking away from this guy because he is nuts. That’s why he has not released his medical records. It should be a medical requirement this day in age that if you are past 65 years of age, you must prove you are not suffering from Alzheimer’s. His base will never accept the fact they elected a crazy man, but MRI’s don’t lie, and his cognitive decline is too obvious. Alzheimer’s is brutal and usually once you have it, it doesn’t take long.

      Alzheimer patients are not crazy, just mentally impaired. It also can take a long time, from beginning to end. Reagan took 9 years to die from it. Doctors cannot make a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s unless an autopsy is performed. There are several different kinds of dementia. Alzheimer’s is just one. Tests can be done to determine whether someone is suffering from dementia, and guesses can be made if someone displays Alzheimer symptoms, but not definitively. The most accurate Alzheimer’s diagnosis on a living person is to say “probably”.

            When Trump goes off-script, and says things not allowed by his handlers (and we know who they are), he is at high risk of paralleling the Star Trek episode, “Patterns of Force.”

            The show was a magnificent and polished example of JWO propaganda masquerading as sci-fi entertainment. When John Gil, the Fuhrer, came out of his drug-induced stupor, and said forbidden things on live TV, he was promptly shot.

            Trump is the photo-negative of that show. He is close to going so far off-script that assassination by Zionist agents is imminent. At some point, Trump MUST EXPOSE the Israeli Mossad as the primary engineer and executor of the 9/11 attack. He knows full well who did it and it wasn’t Osama bin Laden. ObL was a high-level asset for sure and those Saudis with box cutters were a distraction. Only the Mossad could pull off such an operation. Which includes the assistance of fellow travelers in Washington and Manhattan.

            Hopefully, Trump will know when TPTB are ready to make their move. That’s when he should transfer all the sealed and secret material of 9/11 to trusted custodian. Then he goes on TV and blows the lid off. Naming names and destroying Israel’s status as sacred and untouchable.

          I am 72 years old. My mother and my mother’s mother had dementia. My cognition, while very good, was a lot better when I was young. I am forgetful and search for words. I was concerned enough to get tested for dementia a few years ago, given my family history. After the tests, the doctor told me I had no dementia, and that my worries were just a part of the natural aging process. I haven’t got any worse since then, so I guess he was correct. My point being Trump is aging (he’s too heavy), but that doesn’t mean he’s demented.

    I witnessed the total eclipse in John Day, Oregon. It was beautiful to see the clear-light corona surrounding the black void created by the moon.

    We camped in a field adjacent to the airport and it got dark enough that the landing lights turned on. Of course, the traffic after the eclipse was horrible. My new motto: “In case of emergency, don’t even bother to evacuate.”

        I just read Denninger’s comments. His comments about the eclipse crowd being “friendly” vs. an evacuation crowd were spot on. Eastern Oregon is very different from coastal (Portland) Oregon, politically. There was a truck full of red-neck guys who apparently didn’t like us because of our California license plates. They were all flipping us off and yelling, trying to incite trouble. We ignored them and nothing came of it.

        We packed extra fuel and water for the journey.

    Half a year ago, I said that the Fourth World War would last a long time, 10 years, but at least in the beginning Russia would be playing second roles.

    Mitch McConnell just recently has stated that there will be an increase to the debt limit, period. So, at what point does the financial system officially traipse off into a psychotic break is anybody’s guess. I’m also wagering that deeply buried in the newest debt ceiling negotiations are some kinds of proviso that allows creditors to write off outstanding debts (or some other sweetheart loop holes) to allow the system to continue chugging along. I’m not sure what else they are gonna do. What McConnell ought to say is that “the federal gov’t’s budget is total bullshit.” That’s essentially what raising the limit yet again essentially means. It’s all fantasy. Or the other thing he could say is that, “As long as the US Gov’t is alive, we can do whatever the hell we want.” So, as long as the federal bureaucracy is operating, the mass delusion can continue, and the feds can act more and more like a mafia and simply enforce these fantasies.

      When I was in the Navy, all of the above “accidents” would have been impossible. The radars show all. The OOD had all the information he needed to see a hazard and the authority to either act on it or avoid it. If the Captain wasn’t on the bridge, he was just a call away and could be up on the bridge in minutes or even seconds.

      What happened to the Navy since I was in? Do we dare name names and out their agendas?

      If TPTB keep up their agitation, Trump can use his Ace card and blow the lid off of everything by revealing THEM (including names) who’ve brought us to this crisis.

      Trump’s career is a splendid illustration of the adage that there’s no substitute for knowing what you’re doing. He certainly does know what he’s doing; it’s just that it has nothing to do with governing the United States and everything to do with feeding his ego.

Like running someone over or setting the house on fire for Livvy Soprano. Trump searches the table for Rudy, calling out his name several times and he’s sitting right in front of him. Or as Olbermann says, when Mueller gets the goods on him, he’ll resign as part of a package to keep himself out of jail. But his brand will be dead. Good riddance.
