Is it possible that Rep. Adam Schiff was hung out to dry by the devious Ms. Pelosi, feeding his vanity to be a one-man impeachment wrecking crew, knowing that the congressman from Hollywood would utterly blow it? Hmmmmm. Begins to look that way as Mr. Schiff’s House Intel Committee goes public this Wednesday with its soviet-style format on full display.
Well, first, why? Why allow this nitwit to stage an ersatz impeachment only to see it fail? Perhaps to cancel the Jacobin menace metastasizing in the Democratic Party and get on with the business of winning the 2020 elections — with old-school candidates hand-picked to end-run the gang of fantasists currently on display. The House Speaker must sniff the odor of failure in the wind. Joe Biden, smiling cretinously, blunders through the primary venues with a big red “L” plastered on his forehead, often uncertain of what state he’s landed in, or what direction to face the camera. Everybody over twelve in this land knows that his kid Hunter was on the grift in Ukraine, plain and simple, and that Joe assisted in the operation. Color him toast.
Elizabeth Warren has been caught lying very publicly twice now, first as a phony Cherokee Indian (for career advancement in academia), and lately claiming falsely that she was canned from a teaching job years ago for being pregnant (with a 2007 tape of her out telling a contradictory story). Of course, that’s just the cherry-on-top of her dazzlingly unsound policy proposals to bankrupt the nation. Doesn’t look like she can reel it all back in and pretend to be a credible person in time for a full-on campaign.
Bernie Sanders has not completely lost his appeal for the collectivist demographic. The heart attack barely broke his stride. His line of bullshit remains consistent: 20th century nanny-state “solutions” for the problem of a sunsetting industrial economy. The perception out there remains that the unearned riches of the rentier class can be rationally harvested to support the floundering multitudes. There is scant recognition that a Bernie program would only hasten that setting sun and vaporize all those figmentatious rentier riches lodged in the janky financial markets, leaving everybody equally high, dry, and bankrupt. Note: Bernie raised his hand along with everybody else on the debate platform to give free medical care to border jumpers, and it’s all on tape, too, like the Liz Warren vapor trail. Guess how that will play in the reddish states. Finally, how many of us really want a president that looks and acts like your ninth-grade math teacher?
The rest of the field comprises just so many horses that ain’t gonna finish, not even the saintly Mayor Pete of South bend, IN. The other mayor, Michael Bloomberg stepped up to the plate last week and has already racked up an 0-and-2 count. (Only in France do mayors get to be president.) So, guess who that leaves? Self-style gutsy woman Hillary Rodham Clinton, ready and willing to saddle up and reclaim her lost entitlement to rule the land. What has she been actually doing up in her Chappaqua fortress-of-solitude lo these 36 months of defeat and exile besides pretending to write that gutsy woman book? Exactly how much influence does she still exert in the party, and throughout the multitudinous worm-holes of the Deep State? How much more — more than the three-year RussiaGate hoax — is she behind in the effort to drive the US population toward psychosis and submission?
My own sense of things is that she still influences quite a bit — though that might come to a screeching halt when indictments rain down against a large cast of characters associated with the previous governing regime, herself included. After all, she did pay for foreign interference in the 2016 election. For starters think: Christopher Steele, British national, former MI6 employee, before you even start sorting through the sundry Ukrainians recently revealed as “meddlers” via the awkward “whistleblower” affair.
Which brings us back to Rep. Adam Schiff and his monkeyshines in the star chamber of his personal devising. Now that the show goes public, will he haul many of the same characters back into the witness chair to spin out his engineered narrative, without any cross examination allowed, or other felicities of due process? Someone ought to advise him that playing the Robespierre role tends toward an unhappy ending for the player. Especially when Mr. Jordan of Ohio, newly-seated on the Intel Committee, starts barking out points-of-order. I’m even half-wondering if Mr. Durham, the federal attorney, has not already measured up bills of indictment for Mr. Schiff himself, for the phony CIA agent “whistleblower” Eric Ciaramella, the pre-wired IC Inspector General Michael Atkinson, US chargé d’affaires for Ukraine Bill Taylor, and the spectacularly seditious Colonel Vindman, whose antics stand out in this latest coup attempt against the elected president. And then what kind of bag does that leave Ms. Pelosi holding?

By the same token, the Impeachment process is a Constitutional Instrument to be used when, as Franklin himself said, an official has “rendered himself obnoxious”.
The current GOP position is very confusing. Firstly, it objected to closed hearings (such as a Special Counsel/Prosecutor would undertake, but Barr refused to investigate the allegations, hence House Committees took up the responsibility).
Then they voted AGAINST open hearings; now Lindsay Graham refuses to ‘read the testimony’ transcripts; some plonker stands up in the House calling the investigation “Soviet-style” – which I thought was a most unfortunate analogy, given recent history. (Then, pop! JHK is using the same talking point in today’s missive.)
All the ‘No quid pro quo’ rhetoric has morphed into ‘okay, there was a quid pro quo but we do that all the time’;
Then ‘the President was just pursuing foreign policy objectives’ when in fact he was pursuing his OWN political objectives and had deployed Ghoulani along with his very own Igor & Boris henchmen to ‘get it done’ for Trump.
Last I heard from Lindsay Graham, the Whistleblower MUST be produced if there’s to be any legitimacy in the Inquiry, but all the points made in the Whistleblower’s report have been corroborated again and again.
Apparently, though, the witnesses called to the Inquiry have been, to a man&woman, naught but pathological Never Trumpers and they have all lied through their teeth.
Oh, please. Apply Occam’s razor.
In any case, according to all the hyper-critics in here and on Fox Opinions, the whole thing is going to blow up in the Dems’ face. If that’s the case, why get so upset? Let it run its course, and be vindicated. Surely, that would be the preferred outcome for all the rabid Dem-loathers?

I.Where is the quid pro quo? We have the transcript of the call and the Ukrainian PM himself publicly stated he was not pressured. Your whistleblower is a fantasist who was not on the call and has no concrete evidence whatsoever for his claims.
II. You had a special counsel. He ended up finding no evidence for crimes that could result in a charge. Then he ended up delivering a drooling mess of a testimony that has gone down as one of the most embarassing climaxes to a political scandal in US history.
The fact that you return again and again only to embarass yourself is beyond parody. You even got the date for a photo wrong in the previous thread, and it was shown in 3 different locations in your own sad article.

Agreed, DEFCON1. I have been following Jim’s work for years, I was enthralled by his original thinking and sharp writing, and I am now sad to see him digging deeper and deeper into this conspiracist rabbit hole.
For those of his (barely hanging in there) readers who don’t get most of our “information” from Fox News, YouTube, the internet and old X-Files reruns, maybe he can devote one of his future columns to explaining his view of the proper role for Congressional oversight over the executive branch, and more specifically the proper response of Congress to the evidence that Trump withheld Congressionally-mandated aid from a country in the middle of war pending that country’s commitment to investigate his primary political opponent (and former US VP) and associated nutty theories about servers?

lbs, I value independent thinking and was drawn to Kunstler’s work in part because he was an independent and big thinker on the subject of a number of topics including urban planning, architecture and peak oil. I didn’t always agree with him, but he had something new and important to say.
However, unlike much of YouTube “news” sources, Jim actually uses his real name, he has been involved publicly with identified forums, and thus he has had a reputation to protect. I hope he is taking a hard look at some of the dead-ender fringe types he is attracting to his site with his current preoccupation with conspiracy thinking.
The NY Times or any other newspaper, magazine, TV network or other news org of note employs people who make mistakes and have biases, but we know who owns those outlets, we know the names of the people who report for them, and they have reputations and thus standards that they apply, however imperfectly. So everyone has some basis for how much reliability to ascribe to them.
YouTube has no standards, no filters, no guardrails, no transparency, no accountability. Approach at your own risk.

I watched much of the same hearing you did. What I saw in William Taylor was the best our country has to offer – a combat veteran, a man who undoubtedly could have made millions in the private sector over the course of his career who instead has dedicated his life to serving our country, and a man of conscience, testifying, under oath and at penalty of perjury, and facing the wrath and denigration of this president and his followers, as to the facts as he understands them. He came across to me as unambiguously honest and credible.
I don’t see how anyone who considers himself a patriotic American or even just a decent person could tear him down.

The current rules for Impeachment process are those set down in 2015 by the GOP led House, and signed off by Cryin’ John Boehner himself.
So what’s the problem with the process?
Majella, I have to admit that I have only recently started checking in with this blog again after a multiyear hiatus so I’m unclear about how he got from there to here, but it hasn’t escaped me that Jim focuses primarily on attacking the process and the motivations of Democrats/officials from a conspiracy-theory perspective and only passingly if at all on the substance of Trump’s conduct or the legitimate role for Congress in all of this. There is obviously an audience and an internet ecosystem for this stuff, but it is pandering to the cheap seats, as DEFCON1 said, and I’m not sure what the purpose is of a blog that recycles talking points from Fox News primetime programming and Trump’s Twitter feed.
Meanwhile, the lead editorial in the Economist magazine last week was about the Aramco IPO and specifically referred (dismissively) to peak oil. Here’s hoping that Jim leaves the political conspiracymongering to the Russian troll farms and their unwitting US affiliates and gets back to some of the things that made him worth paying attention to in the first place.
Yes, you’re correct in that the focus is SOLELY on the egregious sins of the DNC. I feels like Trump & the cultists get a free ride from him. I have no love of the Democratic Party and also see it’s sins, particularly the low-handed way it dispatched Bernie in 2016. Once upon a time, I was a regular reader here. Then, as Mr. Kunstler’s rants became weirder and wilder after November 2016, I still checked in every few months just to see what other wacky ideas were circulating in the Ether.
Nowadays, I might check in two or three times a year to see if, by chance, Mr. Kunstler has recovered even some of his former lucidity and wit. But even that’s apparently not worth my time anymore.

Evelyn, without question, Republicans are as guilty as sin on a great many things, in broad terms, for selling out their country for the benefit of a favored few. Everything from new air compressors to high end wooden antiques are chucked into the trash weekly in today’s society. Waste from the commercial sector & residential sector is mind bogglingly far too great to be sustained.

For those of a more philosophical bent here is my take on what constitutes morality:
To live for something ‘higher’ than the Self (God, family, country) is moral. Conversely, to live for something ‘lower’ than the Self (money, power, fame) is immoral. Why? To live for something higher than the Self lifts the Self to a higher dimension, the Self participates in this higher sphere and gains enhanced value and purpose thereby. This is expressed biblically as “those who receive a prophet as a prophet shall receive a prophet’s reward”. On the other hand, to live for something less than the Self degrades the Self and lowers its value. Thus through the pursuit of money, power, or fame as ends in themselves the Self is literally corrupted and ‘brought low’.
This is why I argue there are but two choices we can make in life: to ascend towards the ‘Light’ (morality) or descend into ‘darkness’ (immorality). ‘Light’ and ‘dark’ are thus, in this context, symbols for morality and immortality respectively.

I agree with you, Mr.B, both of our parties have degenerated into corrupt organisations where legislation is bought and paid for on a daily basis. My parents and grandparents came from a time when the Democrats actually worked on behalf of the working man and his family, but sadly, those days are gone. As far as the Republicans go, they have always been the party of the wealthy, so they didn’t have far to descend. What has puzzled me, is how they managed to convince working class people that they were on their side.
I know it started with Ronald Reagan, and they’ve been able to keep it going ever since. They know how to work the long con, and that’s a fact. If you had told my parents or grandparents that Republicans were on the side of the workers, they would have laughed in your face, and rightfully so.
Either way, looking at the current situation, I don’t see much hope for the blue collar guys, and I have told my kids so as well. With the coming revolution in AI, and robotics, we’re gonna be looking at a completely different world. For the last, nothing much, except that brh was telling me to lighten up, but you are the least light person on here and he would never dream of telling you the same, since he sees you as Kesa Fyodorovna. Which is fine, but it amused me.
I do not recall saying that I never respond to your posts. Sometimes I do, including recently – but about issues or ideas in them. I most definitely would not invite a diatribe by deliberately attempting to insult you by making snide remarks about the profession you keep telling us about. What you did for a living is neither here nor there to me, since you chose it quite clinically, from what you say. I’m only sorry you had to if you are too.
As regards brh, his views on climate change, intransigeant as they are, drive me nuts in their irrationality. Likewise a number of incredibly one-sided views of my country. And he does periodically send personal barbs my way, full of confrontation about this or that issue. But if I were to find myself in the US, for some unknown reason, I could probably think of at least half a dozen people on here – also just names on a blog – with whom I’d be happy to spend an hour or two over a drink, out of very benign curiosity and normal human friendliness. It’s just had some good luck, though, as its yet-again-dying steel industry has just been bought by some relatively small Chinese outfit, so the jobs are safe for another season. It’s a town with not much else to offer in the way of work, like Sunderland, which has the Nissan factory.
People who go on about Brexit as if post-EU Britain was going to be some kind of nationalist economic powerhouse, would do well to remember who we have to thank for a lot of the jobs. That’s why I see economic sovereignty for the UK as one of those unicorn rainbow farts.

That’s how we got a bunch of (f’n) numpties commissioning a tram system in Edinburgh whose tribulations, years of delay and multiplication of the cost became a national joke. I recall reading in Tom Bowers’ excellent book about Branson that when he created Virgin Trains (which recently, but not now, ran the East Coast line from here to London) that he was asked some simple question about diesel and electric trains and had no clue what the person was talking about. In my view, Light and Dark, Day and Night were designed by the same Creator. Both have a time and space, a rhyme and a reason. Without one, what is the other really? The opposites give meaning to each other and to everything else. This is not to say that a Path of Light should not be sought after. Clearly Life requires Light. But to think that a Path to Light does not have some darkness within it may not be a complete view of Reality IMHO. Thus Christ seeks those that are in Darkness. He said Himself He did not come to call the Righteous. With Him the Last is First. Translation: He helps you to understand all the Gray in between, and to navigate it successfully. Not all paths are the same but all do become very narrow if they arrive at the Light. Some are isolated despite themselves and their efforts. As has been noted before, the Lord chastises those He loves.

Light or God IS. It doesn’t depend on the darkness in any way, shape, or form. The darkness or darknesses of the various levels of manifestation, are simply the absence of light; the darker the level, the further away from the Light.
So to the extent we are created beings, we are involved in darkness to one degree or another. Thus the Path involves looking for the glimmers and moving towards them and away from the Stygian darkness and definitely away from Darkness – or the path of those who have chosen Satan and his Angels.
The darkness isn’t evil per se, since it was created by God. It is simply his play, the wave out of the ocean that will fall back in good time. But the Darkness is Evil since it has chosen to remain separate. Most of us are in the middle: small good, small evil, small light, small life. But since you seek the Caps, you should be clear that the Goal or Sumum Bonum is not just more of the path thereto.
Some (like you!) have said God is beyond Light as well. So in those systems, He created the Light and the Darkness together, one impossible without the other. One Good and partaking of His Being, and one bereft for the most part. Of course, He seems Dark to us being beyond Light. So in these systems, the Darkness itself becomes a symbol of God. All very confusing to the uninitiated since it conflicts with the other way of describing, but clear to those who can See. Even giving directions to the grocery store can be given in any number of ways: by the traffic lights, how many streets, the name of the streets, how long it will take, etc.
To be alive means one will die. It seems all so evil, but it is simply the nature of manifestation. Decay is inherent in all compound things as Buddha said. So how can that be evil, though of course it is very unpleasant. Life will not die, though. We must seek Life so that when we die, we don’t Die.

I sat beside my aunt for every possible minute of the three weeks I waited while she died of a stroke. My mother had looked after her for six years while she (my aunt) deterioriated with dementia. I has stayed beside my mother’s bed, in the Stroke Unit, for the 10 days it took her to die, and I knew my mother would have been distraught to think of her sister dying on her own only weeks later, so I sat beside her too for the duration, job be damned (they were kind, in the event, regarding my dual and rather long family absence).
Someone asked me if I minded the minister coming in to say a prayer and I said of course not. I cried more for my aunt, reduced to looking like a little dying bird, than I had even for my mother, while he said his prayer. And yet even by that time I didn’t share his belief in any of it. Ritual and poetry help people, especially if they resonate nostalgically with the beliefs of their childhood. You do not impress me when either you or Kesa affects to know about other people’s intimate lives from the high horse of your presumption.

I agree Janos. Light IS. Darkness, on the other hand, exists only if we choose it to be so. We, not God, make Darkness real (or at least lend it the appearance of reality) by the choices we make in life. Yet at the same time the potential to choose Darkness must always be present for us to choose Light in its stead. In this sense we can say Darkness is an inevitable byproduct of Light. God, being Light, could not create Darkness, nor, within the finite bounds of time and space, could he prevent the potential for Darkness to be.

Reincarnation in the sense that we return repeatedly to the earthly existence no. Our time in this ‘vale of tears’ is but once, and serves as but the first step in a Long Journey of endless progression through spheres of ever-increasing glory and wonder. To be perfect as our Heavenly Father is perfect is attained only through a developmental process which takes age upon age to unfold. Nor do we make this Journey alone. In this vast cosmos wherein our small, seemingly insignificant planet whirls through the darkness, there are innumerable worlds with inhabitants much like ourselves, although many have attained a much higher level of evolutionary advancement. The wonders which the Father of All has in store for those who choose Light consistently over Darkness is truly beyond human imagination. I believe Jesus has words to this effect somewhere in the New Testament…

Apparently District Attorneys refuse to prosecute any crimes at all so they have reached a state where anything goes and civilization has came to an end. On the other hand I saw a recent interview with the San Fran mayor — a black woman– who stated things are going well in the city and any criticism is the result of racism and hatred.

New Englanders — and JHK right over the border — brace yourself for frigid air coming in from the arctic north the first blast of the season. Got a delivery of 250 gallons of heating oil this morning, life giving, warmth creating, oil. Without that, and shipments of natgas gas thru intercontinental pipelines, how could anybody possibly live in this north country in winter? Cut down the trees and burn them up? That would probably last about 3 days. In fact this state was effectively deforested by 1870 and trees didn’t start coming back until anthracite coal began arriving by rail from mines in Pennsylvania. Solar panels wouldn’t work to good today because it’s raining, soon to be sleeting. There is talk of creating Peoples Commissions to end use of fossil fuels by force, overriding state power, an emergency measure to save the planet. I envision mobil Commissars with armed escorts roaming rural areas in the state, kicking in aunt Jennie’s doors and shutting down oil and gas burning furnaces, shooting people who resist the reasonable and necessary ‘Climate Emergency’ measures.

As I said up thread, I am so glad that I am able to light the gas burner in our furnace by simply turning up the thermostat on the wall in our dining room, rather than trying to build a fire when my fingers are so numb from cold that I am not able to pick up a match.

Just this week I noticed on a beautiful stretch of road along the Farmington River, in a valley with ledge on one side and pristine river on the other, which I thought was safe from entropic suburban development, they’re blasting thru the granite ledge with dynamite to make room for … what, not sure yet. McMansions, apt buildings? We’ll find out pretty soon. No matter how slow the economy is there always loans to build McMansions.

I quite agree there are a lot of things you can’t run on renewables – and that it takes fossil fuels to create the renewables infrastructure, but it still makes sense, re both issues (AGW and coming fossil-fuel penury) to leverage the available oil that we have left to use renewables where we can.
Look at what they do in places like Dubai. The more functions you turn over to renewables, the more oil is left for longer for those uses that are less negotiable, like people whose only alternative is oil for heating.
Same if people like me don’t insist on a personal car when we can manage without one. It leaves more space on the roads and more fuel for those who can’t.
And I don’t think most of the young protesters are being intentionally dishonest about what’s possible. They’re just not as well read as we are on the nitty gritty. 🙂

Whitebox’s investment in Remington illustrates how some hedge funds, whose investors include pension funds, financial institutions and high-net-worth individuals, do not share the same reputational concerns as many banks. It also underscores the emergence of hedge funds as “shadow banks,” replacing traditional lenders to companies.
“Given the baggage of these particular loans for banks that are public companies, it is an invitation to hedge funds to get in and relieve the bank of an asset they don’t really want to hold,” said Campbell Harvey, a professor finance at Duke University. “A hedge fund is a private entity, it doesn’t need to answer to public shareholders.”
Whitebox, which was a creditor of Remington before it filed for bankruptcy, first stepped in to replace Bank of America Corp as a lender last year, according to the sources.

Rather than endure the (inevitable) silence, I could make an argument for another system. It is unproven. It is untoward in the minds of the average person. It is fraught with issues. BUT it might work at some level.
The Godless Communists…the “Heathen Chinee” are implementing a system of social control by means of social scoring…ubiquitous, full coverage 24/7 observation, coupled with Artificial Intelligence, is scoring every Chinese citizen, scoring them by whatever metric the government designs, and then…people with low social scores are sanctioned. No public transportation…driving privileges revoked…credit outright denied or at exorbitant cost…ATM’s unavailable…maybe even utilities and other costs of living boosted.
There will be, of course, police and military to further sanction those not chastened. And, consider, the Design of the paradigm might be entirely evil in it’s overall effect, real or intended…it is a grand social experiment.

I have always voted against our municipal tax cap bank as I despise the very concept. However, two years ago I made a deal with my “committeeman appointed to act as Mayor”, that if he would back my debt payoff plan, I would vote for his tax cap bank. It was going to pass anyway, but when I voted to pass it, he was surprised and asked why I voted for it this time. I told him I made a deal, a compromise. I do not thing he understood nor does he still. He (they) are my way or the highway fools. Nothing ever gets accomplished with that mentality, just look at DC.

There has been talk here about eliminating generational wealth by means of an inheritance tax. There needs to be an exemption made in any such tax structure to allow family farms to stay in the family.
Here in Iowa the average value of an acre of land is around $7300 There was a time, up until the 1950s, when a family farm was a quarter section, 160 acres, or less, and families made a good living. Now farms are much larger. A reasonable size farm is now a section, that is, one square mile, or 640 acres. The value of that land is about $4.6 million.
Allowing for buildings and machinery, I would suggest a cap of $6 million on the taxable portion of farm estates. There would have to be a requirement that the heirs actually farm the land for a reasonable number of years. If they sold out, hired a manager, or let a renter farm the land, their inheritance would be taxed away. I want to see actual family farms, operated by the family, protected..
That $7300 per acre is for farmland. Developers pay much more.

And you don’t pay inheritance tax on small inheritances otherwise. When my mother died, her house and whatever was in the bank wasn’t worth enough to hit the threshold (about £250K at the time, 13 years ago). I believe it’s now £475K for a main residence, £150K less for a non-main residence.
On the other hand, a bit of creative, but legal accounting ensures that the wealthier often don’t have to pay much of it either, through trust funds and the like, for their grandchildren’s private schooling and university education.
I’ve always thought it was a fairly benign tax, as it’s hitting a windfall, not something the recipient worked for themselves, on the whole, even for modest inheritances.
It’s not the tax that most people fear these days – it’s their equity going to a nursing home.

Re ‘wealth that has already been taxed’, I don’t know how it works over your way, but here payments towards your pension when you’re working are given tax relief throughout your entire working life, so a lot of what pensioners are getting got a tax break already. And individuals here pay no income tax on anything under £11,500 ($14,812) pa. So for the poorer pensioners that’s a pretty good deal.

Well, being curious, and having a full machine shop at hand, I once built a…A Rat Cannon. And it worked.
Take a piece of heavy wall, sched. 40 pipe, a 3″ diameter, approx. 15 inches long…use an M-80 pyrotechnic, wired with an electric match, and a set of contact strips midway into the device. Place something toothsome as bait, at the breech, hook to a 12V battery, point the device to a heavy wall 25 yds. hence…and get the hell away from it.

Well there are a few distinctions we must make before going further. The Ainu were closely related to the Emishi and Jomon tribes who inhabited the remainder of the archipelago. My understanding is that the Yamoto were not natives of the archipelago but actually began migrating on the main islands of Japan from Korea. I do have compassion for the Ainu. Once Truth has been attained however they are to be dismantled, discarded, and set aside. In the wake of a new Dark Age I predict the return of the monastic system or self-sufficient religious orders. Hey Brh, I read that article you recommended by Yoni Applebaum. Wow! Boy were you right. He recommends that we (Conservatives) forget all about our race and heritage and only focus on our ideas and political solutions.
