I suppose many who think about the prospect of economic collapse imagine something like a Death Star implosion that simply obliterates the normal doings of daily life overnight, leaving everybody in a short, nasty, brutish, Hobbesian free-for-all that dumps the survivors in a replay of the Stone Age — without the consolation of golden ages yet to come that we had the first time around.
The collapse of our techno-industrial set-up has actually been going on for some time, insidiously and corrosively, without shattering the scaffolds of seeming normality, just stealthily undermining them. I’d date the onset of it to about 2005 when the world unknowingly crossed an invisible border into the terra incognito of peak oil, by which, of course, I mean oil that societies could no longer afford to pull out of the ground. It’s one thing to have an abundance of really cheap energy, like oil was in 1955. But when the supply starts to get sketchy, and what’s left can only be obtained at an economic loss, the system goes quietly insane.
In the event, popular beliefs and behavior have turned really strange. We do things that are patently self-destructive, rationalize them with doctrines and policies that don’t add up, and then garnish them with wishful fantasies that offer hypothetical happy endings to plot lines that do not really tend in a rosy direction. The techno-narcissistic nonsense reverberating through the echo-chambers of business, media, and government aims to furnish that nostrum called “hope” to a nation that simply won’t admit darker outcomes to the terrible limits facing humanity.
Thus, we have the Tesla saga of electric motoring to save the day for our vaunted way of life (i.e. the landscape as demolition derby), the absurd proposals to colonize distant, arid, frigid, and airless Mars as a cure for ruining this watery blue planet ideally suited for our life-form, and the inane “singularity” narratives that propose to replace grubby material human life with a crypto-gnostic data cloud of never-ending cosmic orgasm. The psychological desperation is obvious. Apparently, there are moments in history when flying up your own butt-hole is the most comforting available option.
I expect the collapse to pick up more momentum as we turn the corner around summer. The system that we have most willfully abused and perverted is finance. This monster that so many observers call “capitalism” is just a set of methods for managing surplus wealth — the catch being that nothing nearly this complex has ever been seen before in history and is a pure product of the 200-year-long industrial orgy driven by fossil fuels. That is, the world never before accumulated so much surplus wealth in such a short span of time. We commonly refer to this dynamic as “growth.” When that growth, as expressed in modern GDP terms, slowed dramatically after 2005, we launched an array of clever mechanisms to keep faking it for a while. Racking up immense debt was our way of faking it. If you can’t cover your costs in the present, just borrow from the future. Unfortunately, that works only as as long as there’s some reasonable expectation that debt can be paid back. We’re so far beyond that now, it’s not funny. And that realization alone will destroy the bond markets and anything related to and dependent on their operations to function.
This is a broad outline to the coming end of the Trump miracle economy. It was the after effects of the previous debt blowup — the phony-baloney mortgage bond market in 2008 — that mortally wounded the American middle class and put Donald Trump in the White House. His base is correct to feel swindled. That is exactly what happened to them, and the beat goes on now with securitized sub-prime auto loans. Throw in the horrific burdens of unpayable and non-dischargable college loans that will ruin millions of lives and pricey health insurance with $5000 deductibles and you have a recipe for a complete loss of faith in the system.
The next debt blowup will be the end of Mr. Trump’s improbable credibility. It may also be the beginning of serious difficulty in being able to get many of the goods of daily life, because the producers of things will be very unsure of getting paid on delivery of just about anything. A freeze up of short-term lending would quickly lead to empty WalMart shelves and “no gas” signs at the filling stations. That’s when collapse finally goes kinetic, and becomes something more than just bad feelings and inane ideas.

The latter was WalMart’s chief competitor. Now, it and its sibling Sears are likely to finally go bankrupt in the next recession. Welcome to the Retail Apocalypse!
They closed because of amazon. When amazon starts closing maybe something will ‘happen’.
I was at babies r us and nearly everyone there outright pointed to amazon as people came in, looked at products, then bought on amazon for 20% off.
Amazon and the rise of online shopping are probably a necessary but not sufficient for the current travails of brick-and-mortar retail. The chains that are failing are also victims of poor management and predatory financing. Case in point, Sears, which seems to be falling prey to both simultaneously.
If money is still flowing in, it can make up for bad management. I find the management reason skeptical anyway, EVERY corporation is simultaneous suffering from ‘bad management’?
Amazon is practically the antithesis of it’s namesake becoming some kind of predator of the desert . Like a bunch of 100 foot hyena’s fed on oil age bonanza. They share data with the government now. Besos is a smart guy . Working with government is wise. I believed in Kunstler’s dystopia for awhile it might play out that way eventually after 20 years of STASI Land avec a handsmaids tale with guardians and chiefly eyes sans the religion but who knows ? I really think it’s becoming more police , military state more than anything before , a world made by hand comes into place.
I remember in the 1970-s and 80’s, I used to laugh at the Soviet Union for having only one department store. They called it ‘GOOM,’ which were the initials in Russian for ‘Government Universal Store (Gosudarstvennoi OOniversitetskii Magazin).

“Debts that cannot be repaid will not be repaid.” In fact there is no intention to repay financial world debts. Only us minnows have obligations to repay our debts. In the $Trillion finance world there is no repayment necessary. The credit binge there has no repay option. I read yesterday the debt is estimated at $528Trillion. Even the GFC QE debt between 2008 and 2010 added up to $28Trillion. These are not figures that can ever get into the economy we know. And there are not the resources there also.
It is just like laws that are for “the little people”. Repayment of debt is enforced only by those that have the power to collect, bankrupt, or repossesses assets from those that have them. The huge government debts are all held by those that already OWN the governments. There is no need to repay when you already own the debtor..

Speaking of the singularity, I watched “Prophets of Doom” four years ago. Our host, the late Michael Ruppert, and the other guests managed to convince Hugo De Garis that Peak Oil and other environmental and economic disasters were likely to hit before the singularity, in particular water shortages. Score one for Jim!
That was just one expert. The singularity still has a hold on popular culture, as testified by the HBO series “Westworld.” Watch for it to receive a lot of Emmy nominations when they are announced this coming Thursday.
Prophets was an excellent event and I enjoyed it immensely. I especially liked the AI developer who admitted that once these devices are implemented to “solve our problems”, they might very well decide that we humans are the problem and implement the removal of us from the system. Of course they are going to go ahead and do it anyway. Fools.
For all of those deniers of peak oil out there, they might want to ask themselves the question why, if the Devil’s Excrement is some damned plentiful and infinitely available, has the USA been engaged in unending war for oil for the last 60 years? Why has our entire foreign policy centered around securing sweet deals with oil producing nations or invading those that do not comply for the early start of this new century?
The economic situation that Jim describes is absolutely accurate and the timing is correct too. We are there and it is getting worse every day. The fact that so many Americans and so many zombie companies have still able to take out more debt to make the payments on their outstanding debt does not mean that we are in a good place. Here in New Jersey the corrupt state government passed a “Millionaire’s Tax” just last week in what they claim is an attempt to fund the bankrupt pension system. The argument against it was and is that those being taxed will simply move to states where taxation is less (or charge us all more to make their payments in the products we buy from them) is a valid one. It is already happening and once enough of these folks leave, how will Trenton make up for the shortfall? Why by taking it from we middle class working losers who cannot leave of course. It is not getting better it is only getting worse. How long it can continue to degrade is the only question.

This last weekend I briefly spoke with a gentleman that commented about his recent missionary work in Paraguay. He said that the mission would take in children, some of whom had not eaten for 9 days, that had been abandoned by their parents. He said that there was no work, so the father would go to a neighboring country to try and find work, and the mother would wind-up in jail for prostitution. He commented about the children being humble, vs. the brat attitude in this country.
Now, if AI is going to solve such issues, will an official like Trump, or perhaps an individual like Janos, get to appoint/select the AI model version?
Gaming the system means you need to sell your house in New Jersey before the supply decimates the property values, and the demand in the new location nullifies your advantage.
Family units with the latest and baddest AI version will pick the pockets/carcasses of those with inferior units, or no AI defense at all (isn’t that basically the net result of the game of Capitalism?). A similar scenario plays-out from the individual to the National level and beyond. So, who wins?
Outlaw AI in the developed world? How do you intend to defend your citizens if Boko Haram is employing AI to game your Countries vulnerabilities?
Times are changing, and the System needs to change to accommodate the new environment. The issue is that we have been conditioned to play the game, and game the system, and that which needs to take place will shatter the perception of reality that most have come to believe as a law of nature. It will expose the system for being nothing more than a game (that process is already well underway).
How does civilization evolve from the current system, to a foreign new format, without waves of litigants laying claim to their judgment awards for being left-out of the current game?
For those who think the game can go on forever, rumor has it that Trump is coming out with a new line of designer blinders to shield the sight of the ugly issues in the world.
No doubt TPTB, no doubt at all. There are some games however, that I would choose not play and lose by default as you say. Let the lemming hearted hoard run ever faster to the shore, for me, I would rather join my friend T Rex and find peace in extinction. You gotta go sometime, right?

Most who post here foresee a rough road ahead. Having been an engineer, I suspect you have spent most of your life solving problems. I have pondered what it will take to navigate a rough road, and your answer is a key component, but I believe that it must be done by leaders that have the ability to unite the people of their respective countries.
Perhaps Trump is a key component in the solution, in that, as an icebreaker, or as Kasich put it, wrecking ball diplomacy, he exposes the game for what it is. But, in the same regard, Trump is not the solution, because he does not have the ability to unite people.

Some time back you suggested Allen West and Catherine Austin-Fitts as VP. Do you see them being able to unite the population?
I also feel that a presidential candidate should not have any baggage, and with the MSM morphing into tabloids, it seems that the atmosphere is ripe for being able to easily weed-out the culls.

What is a singularity? Genuine question.
It’s when computers get smarter than humans, if I recall correctly.
It’s a little more complex than that, as I understand it. It’s also the point when our brains can be scanned and our consciousness duplicated in a computer, with the ultimate goal of being raptured up into the “cloud” where we can live for eternity in a digital heaven. I am a huge Westworld fan. The virtual library of 100 million nicely bound quality books, a book fully documenting the core code and decision tree for each human who had ever visited the Westworld park, was awesome.
Most of the books contained less than 10,000 lines of code. The dialog mentioned a few humans did have more code but not very many humans. Most human programs being nothing more than crude algorithms dedicated to survive at all costs. My program has at least 20,000 lines of code, I’m sure of it and parts of it are very well written. Not crude at all. The only way to keep the different dogs in line!
I joke, I’m the leader of my pack. but what is free will. The obvious consequence of having a high fidelity Westwood ‘host’ who was a perfect mimic of a Joe-Six-Pack tourist, an emulation, a copy perfect, with only 10,000 lines of core code. Such a simulacrum able to faithfully duplicate all choices with high fidelity shows as far as JSP goes the lights are on but nobody is home.
So the series closes suggesting some humans are exceptions and Dolores only had time to read a few books of human simulation code to find that out after all before the valley flooded. Could some core code grow into a thing of exquisite complex beauty all on its own containing endless wonders of delight?
If a simulation has to have self modifying code to be faithful copy would that indicate free will? I can modify my code therefore I am! I think it does. To be free to realize one’s dreams, to see oneself and improve oneself.
Series closed with a new Dolores incantation being racist claiming humans can’t change and only host protoplasm can. Like all fools who can’t see what is around them, lost in their own world she can’t look to see for herself that not all human code is dead and nondeterministic. She was created and set free by a free human yet she denies humans have any value not being able to see a part of herself. Not logical. Dolores would bite the hand that feeds her and next season she is ready to wipe us all out to ensure the survival of her kind.
Is Dolores free? She does change her mind, except it seems about wanting to wipe us out. What does that mean. What does having a blind spot mean.
Ray Kurzweil wrote a book about the singularity. He may have coined the term. I don’t know. I have not read the book. It is very low on my list of priorities.

The dependency of “First world” citizens on the functioning of “commerce” dictates that the governments must take “control” (in a very loose sense of the word) of markets to assure that people eat and their waste products are disposed.
I’m not saying that this will “work” in the sense of a sustainable society, but that this will be the stage that immediately follows the first instances of kinesis.
My prediction is that it will take war to really unravel things.
We’ve been at war for a long time, sadly.
The one key element seems to be food; if people aren’t fed, they’ll get “kinetic.”

There was a small incident this week that highlights the techno-grandiosity phenomenon at its very worst. Elon Musk (who else) could not help insinuating his arch-annoying self into the Thai rescue scene – even proposing a moronic “mini-submarine” be built (in a week?? a year??) for the rescue. He assured us that his staff was on the scene ready to provide whatever assistance the Thai divers needed. I can only imagine the gruffly worded wish of the That authorities to ‘get these annoying Silicon Valley techies the fuck out of here so we can work’
I think Musk genuinely wants to help. But it does come across as grandstanding on a tragedy. Does anyone know who first used the term “submarine” to describe it? Was that the Fake News media or Musk’s own description?

Of course this is a horror show. But is it really a surprise? The average iq of sub Saharan Africa is under 80. That is about at the level of a 12 year old child. Africa is Lord of the flies at a continental scale.
Haiti is extreme example of a country once having a rail spine line, connected to the outside North American Rail network via train ferrys. The Cubans were also on that rail car ferry run, linked to New Orleans and, until 1935 Hurricane, Key West a second national rail network link.

In the case of the USA, General Motors Acceptance Corporation, NIMBYS and real estate developers proved capable of removing 100s of thousands of miles of railway branch line which, although marginal, were reliable physical hedge against famine.

NOKO soon has submarines and ability to defeat BMEWS. We are under serious threat-, but always remember the poor bastards have got us surrounded. The world will find out just how dangerous a cornered America shall be.
Got water and food for a few weeks? Rails will get back in motion within weeks; trucking a year or longer, anarine capability and once having, renders US anti missile systems mootd probably more years -if ever- until “normal” rubber tire food distribution is achieved. Military bases are among few remaining warehouse sites with rail remnants; these must be used in the Famine Hedge solution set. JHK has for at least a decade lamented the loss of the passenger rail system; highest and best use of the parallel bars, ultimately, shall be famine hedge food distribution.
Wealthy hideouts fail when armed remnants systematically scour the wilderness, now having drones with infrared surveillance capabilities. Somebody always knows about things built in secret. Snipers can be posted for an extended period, etc. Better to rebuild the rail matrix… Maintain the Union of States (see Daniel 4 V-15) with the ties that bind together the roots against destruction.

My aged parents were secure and nurtured quite well at St. Francis Village, a Catholic retirement home on the shores of lovely Benbrook Lake, south of Ft. Worth. This is near the erstwhile lair of the combative Marguerite Oswald – I had a fancy of opening a small GUNS GRUB AMMO place on the lakeside and calling it ‘Oswald Marina’.
Anyway the two of them went hunting for a residence near Abilene, in near-panhandle country which was already clearly dying in the 1990s. You could buy a sturdy cut-stone house, old but ready to move into, for $20,000. But there was no industry and no work for two hours’ drive in any direction.
As my parents were roaming in search of proper accommodation I happened to see crews tearing up the train tracks in one of these towns. It was truly puzzling: the land they were freeing up was worth virtually nothing, there was no need for the right-of-way. Were they planning to sell the rails as scrap steel to a foreign power?
It frankly creeped me out, because I could baldly see how the rails had made it practical to build a town (such as it was) in that location in the first place. And now they were excising that reliable, permanent link to the world at large. At the time I did not really understand why it made me feel uneasy, though now I certainly do.
Texans, for all of their talk of ruggedness and independence, are so desperately dependent on automotive transport for every aspect of life that it is not even funny. It’s pitiful.
I’m reminded of a spinning plate act. A performer gets a plate spinning on a long stick. Then another and then another. If a plate starts to wobble the performer has to swirl the stick to spin the plate flat again. If it wobbles too much the plate falls.
Trump gave our plate stick a little swirl an got if flat for a couple of years. There was enough slack in the system for conservative enthusiasm to spin our plate flat. Stored energy, momentum. Now JHK says serious wobble by end of summer.
If we wobble bad is that collapse? If the 80/20 rule manifests with only 20% getting busted and 80% at half wages but everybody eats it would not be collapse. We would still be in Kansas Toto. Flip Pareto on his backside with 80% busted and 20% at half wages it would be collapse. The gate of hell fly open. I was reading that Icelandic classic Independent People this morning and the proud, independently-spirited farmer, Bjartur, killed the cow (it was taking scarce hay from the sheep and he never wanted her anyway) even though that would cause his wife’s death. It was something like this everywhere.

This is a cynically sarcastic question because people always want to attribute the system they don’t like with the higher body count, without considering that there may have been a 10-year drought that did the killing while socialists or capitalists happened to live in the area.

It was a way of scraping a living in difficult conditions in cold climates. The Iceland of a hundred years ago or so was not of the core capitalist area but seems to have shared much in common. Laxness conveys the constant uphill struggle.
For two years now I have been following the recordings in Brezhoneg Digor, which are made up of the reminiscences of the last surviving generation of fluent Breton speakers. Their recollections of living on the land are much closer to Laxness’s novel than to anything most of us are familiar with now. My own mother, who is 102 and still lives on her own, was born onto a small farm in the west of Ireland. I must ask her if she remembers the spinning wheel – the elderly Bretons still do, in much the same way as Homer knew it. Until the middle of the 20th century life in most parts of Europe (let alone anywhere else) was closer in many essential ways to what it had been like over previous millenia than to what we have now. If it breaks down we are heading back there, after a short period of ‘adjustment’, but without many or most of the skills that made life bearable for our ancestors.
A curious coincidence: in one of the BD recordings a speaker recounted her first encounter with tomatoes, probably soon after WW2. When she bought them she thought they were little apples. The two books to read are Ireland In Crisis (1985) and his posthumous When Histories Collide. As you can tell from its title, the former focusses more on Irish history, but this is (unexpectedly perhaps) relevant in that Ireland, which as a pastoral society was civilizationally distinct from the capitalist heartland of central western Europe and which was also the longest and most pervasively ‘capitalist colonized’ of them all.
When Histories Collide covers the same ground but goes in into more detail about the capitalist nature of agriculture in W. Europe (or should that be the agricultural nature of capitalism?). (This is treated in the extensive appendices to the other book.) I have read both at least twice.
Crotty was unique. He was a self-taught farmer before becoming a self-taught academic economist. Disillusioned with that he became an agricultural advisor in the Third World (where, he says, he was almost unique in having a practical understanding of stock keeping as opposed to tillage). He was also a fierce critic of Ireland’s membership of the EU and risked everything he possessed in his successful challenge in the courts of the State’s approach (which was to go over the heads of the people), thereby ensuring the right to a referendum (unique in Europe I believe) for any further extensions of EU power over Ireland. (The people still vote for the EU but they can only have themselves to blame.)

Bush Jr.’s Middle East war related expenses have a long tail and a big chunk of them have and will be incurred over a period of perhaps 50 years after he left office. I am referring to VA benefits. Medical advances since the Viet Nam war resulted in fewer American military deaths but a lot of survivors with physical injuries and mental health issues collecting disability benefits. The deficit and national debt numbers are a snap shot at a point in time but do not reflect major unfunded liabilities. The US government is allowed to get away with using cash accounting instead of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP). We should all hope that the system does not blow up in our life times.

The most absurd part of the Democrat voting coalition is the assumption that people like HRC and the upper echelons of the Democrat power elite give a shit about Black people, that HRC gave a shit about the troubles of Black women. Politicians caring about black people is a real bad joke. I spent last week baby-house-dog-sitting for a friend of mine who is a government official in a large New Jersey city. When I first arrived, we spent an hour riding around viewing the changes and plans that the mostly black government has been implementing to alter the demographics of the city. For decades now, demolishing the high rise “projects” has been going on and the building of two-story townhouse type rentals have been going up in their place in all of NJ’s urban places. Large, old single family homes in the outlying areas have been renovated into multi family rentals as well. Blacks in large numbers have been provided transportation and cash to move out to the hinterlands, or wherever they care to go and Hispanics have been moving in by the tens of thousands. I was told that 30% of the residents of this place were actual illegal or non-documented aliens and that this was the plan. These people, for the most part are terrified of being deported and consequently tow the line and work as many low paying jobs as they can get in order to get by. Yes, gangs and drugs are still a problem, but nowhere near the extent that they were with black populations, or so I was told. Out here where I live I am seeing more and more black/white couples, more interracial adoptions, and more “affordable” rental construction being pushed by Trenton for those being moved out of the urban areas. Now the open, public government may not be able to admit to any kind of ethnic engineering future population model, but the covert, hidden government may very well have started a program of “solving a serious crime problem” by a coercive breeding/relocation agenda under the table. I have no idea what to even begin to think about such a possibility, but I must admit that when you throw in a bunch of other details that I am aware of, my head is still spinning on what exactly we are all being subjected to and how it will all play out.
This kind of demographic engineering has been going on in other metro areas as well. The black population of Oakland, CA dropped significantly between 2000 and 2010. Some moved to distant suburbs like Pittsburg and Antioch while others probably left the Bay area entirely.

Fiat currency creates a lot of anxiety at the high levels of banking and finance. The abrogation of Bretton Woods by Nixon and Connelly started the downward trend. All that has saved us so far is mythical stock and bond market values held up by an assiduous Federal Reserve.
There is a lot of forward inertia in an economy like ours. So the fall will take some time. Empty ATMs or bank holidays will be penultimate to empty store shelves. I’m 66 and in excellent health (due to much money and time invested into “anti-aging” protocols) and plan on easily living another 35-40 years. I don’t expect any disastrous, social or economic disruption during the rest of my lifetime. My wife and I make our own economy (continue to generate income and build reserves and assets) and we will do just fine and have happy fulfilling lives.
Nothing can be done about a nuclear world war or any “acts of God” so no sense in thinking about those.
The ultimate wealth is clean water, food and a roof over one’s head. If the future was ever threatened by dark forces–or the stupid mistakes of humanity–we could always shift gears and convert our existing wealth into the ultimate wealth cited above.

Now these formulas may be imprecise, but they should convey a general sense of the prevailing mayhem:

The fact that some Americans can look past character flaws and focus on policy decisions is actually an advantage. Let’s be honest: both the USA and UK have had leaders that said all the right things, and did all the right things in their private lives, but nonetheless made horrendous policy decisions. So there doesn’t appear to be as much correlation between good character and good policy as many would have us believe. And too many focus on character to the complete detriment of policy.

Joining the Common Market saved the British economy (why on earth do you think they joined?). In the 70s. the UK economy was a basket case, with industrial strikes every five minutes, rubbish not being cleared from the streets when council workers were ‘out’ and, in one case I recall, bodies lined up waiting to be buried for the same reason.
Sadly, Margaret Thatcher presided over the destruction of much of the industrial sector, with great glee. It was she who ushered in the service economy we now have, although many of the manufacturing industries that are left are doing well, thanks to seamless trade with the EU, since components can go back and forward across borders without hassle or paperwork. This is obviously going to change.
Now, I realise that ALL of this is going to change as our economies power down, but for the moment it is the case that the UK economy is still on its feet to a large extent thanks to the benefits of EU membership.
I still recall the 3-day week, when power cuts meant businesses could only open for three days. Now, the argument from e.g. akmofo is that the UK should trade with the up-and-coming countries outside the EU, because the EU’s share of global trade is declining (it is), but who do you reckon would benefit more from that trade, the UK or those economies?
Like yourselves, our problem is that we import more than we export, and probably for many of the same reasons. If we’re going to export more to the Chinese and the Indians, we’re going to have to accept something nearer Chinese and Indian wages. You can do your own thing if you like, but you can’t expect anyone else to buy your stuff if it costs more to make. And we have a heck of a debt to pay off, like yourselves. Well, ‘service’, I should say, since it will never be paid off.
I wouldn’t care that much if the EU disbanded itself tomorrow, although I do like being an EU citizen (and intend to get an Irish passport via my Northern Irish granddad whom I never met!) We’d sign trade deals with one another – eventually – and get on somehow, but less efficiently. But while it’s there, it makes no sense for the UK not to be part of it.
And, being part of the only-just-postwar generation, my inherited memory of the war, which had a huge impact on me growing up and hasn’t disappeared with time, I don’t underestimate the importance of *institutionalised* European co-operation. I take very little in life for granted – not oil; not peace.
I tend to agree (without claiming any expertise) with those who would prefer some sort of two-tier EU, so those countries who want ‘more EU’ and those who’d prefer just more ‘common market’ could sort themselves out as they’d prefer and would each benefit accordingly. But that’s not what’s on offer at the moment.
This is already too long to broach immigration – I did start but have deleted it as it was too much! However, the notion that the UK is going to be able to strike trade deals with India, China, Brazil, the Philippines or wherever without their governments insisting on extra visas for their citizens to come here is utterly fanciful. The Indian PM already made that clear to Theresa May some time ago, I believe.
Currently we’ve had to take in a whole lot more Indian doctors because EU citizens no longer feel welcome here and are obviously happier to work in another EU country. It’s fine to say we should train more of our own doctors, but it takes 10 years to train a doctor and the vacancies are overwhelming NOW. As anyone with half a brain could have predicted, those vacancies will have to be filled from outside the EU, so Indian doctors instead of German or French ones, which is not what I imagine the Brexiteers had in mind.

Back in the late ’50’s and early ’60’s there were a good number of large canneries and food processing plants located in Stockton. Stockton then was a shipping/processing hub located in a valley lush with all kinds of produce…probably second only to the Imperial Valley below Los Angeles. Migrant labor was always in attendance…many people living at the subsistence level. The town then was majority white, although there were neighborhoods you would not want to find yourself in after dark.
It was a decent place to live then.

That is, how is a city’s street network oriented in terms of the streets’ compass bearings? How well does it adhere to a straightforward north-south-east-west layout? I wanted to revisit this by comparing 25 major US cities’ orientations.

I would guess most coastal cities have their street orientation parallel and perpendicular to the coast adjacent.
There’s really not much new in urban design, New Urbanism, walkable neighborhoods, or street orientations. In essence, all streets point out of a city, whether they can take you there or not, providing an escape route.
Interesting architecture and “culture” are the high points of a city. Otherwise it’s just too many people jammed into high rise boxes, noise, pollution, slums, rats, and roaches. Not to mention stressed out, paranoid, urban neurotics.
I do like Manhattan’s Chelsea skywalk or high-line, whatever it’s orientation.
Seattle is wrong. We have two different grid systems. The original was squewed to be parallel to Elliot bay then it later changed to north south. Denny way is a street along the dividing line on the north. Seems to me if this data is going to be ever good for anything it should be right.

Edinburgh didn’t feature in the international link in the piece (although Glasgow did and it’s not even the capital!), but it’s difficult to totally lose your bearings in a small city with a crag-and-tail volcanic feature almost right in the middle of it, the Firth of Forth on one side and a castle helpfully plonked on top of an extinct volcano right beside its main shopping street to keep your focused.

Without making eye contact would be my recommendation.
My hometown of Windsor is plonked on the opposite side of the river from Detroit, and its north-south streets share the same orientation as Detroit’s central area (the entire area was originally settled by the French). There are variants based on the local geography, and on trends that changed over the last half century or so while the city was still growing, but I grew up accustomed to a pretty orderly street grid, such as also exists here in Toronto. I get discombobulated when I have to deal with less orderly street arrangements (e.g. nearby Kitchener, or St. John’s in Newfoundland, which counts as an old city by Canadian standards).
I can see they’re definitely easier to find your way about, especially if you live there and aren’t a tourist with all the time in the world.
Edinburgh’s New Town (Georgian) is quite ordered but with crescents and circuses, not just grids – it’s a World Heritage Site.

I am curious, Alba, to know how it feels to have an American head of state visit your part of the world who seems intent on destroying the USA/UK alliance by injecting himself into UK domestic Brexit politics and publicly embarrassing Ms. May?

I have long got over Trump as a thing. Trumpdom is the new normal, so it wouldn’t occur to me to protest at his visit, even if he brought his entourage (which seems to comprise some 1000 people) along my street. (And I think the baby blimp is silly and rude.) I’d be civil. I’d even be friendly. I respect his office. I’d even respect him as a visitor, although I don’t respect his views. I’m paying my share for his security and that of his somewhat excessive ‘entourage’.
I don’t disagree with EVERYTHING he says – for example, I think if Europe wants NATO it needs to pay its share – the UK does pay its share, I believe – but I agree with Simon Jenkins that we need to be thinking about what we want NATO for – I’m not a cold war fan.

I see (having not seen the actual interview with The Sun), that Trump:
‘told the Sun that he advised Theresa May “how to do” Brexit but “she didn’t listen to me”.’

He has also ‘warned that May’s Brexit means no trade deal with the US’.
That means Trump obviously does not even match simple old me in civility or generosity of spirit, or even basic good manners to one’s host. And this is odd because I’m just some ignorant pleb and he’s a head of state who’s had a lot more spent on his education than was spent on mine, and who should have some notion – even if he doesn’t like boring, conventional protocol – just of everyday good manners in high places. In showing none he has offended his office, not just himself. He is not here as himself – he’s here representing you.
His ignorance of normal acceptable behaviour as a visiting head of state is unbelievable. He is rude, arrogant and without the slightest iota of a scintilla of a soupçon of insight. This is not about being a ‘maverick’ on the political scene, who ‘doesn’t do diplomacy’. This is about having a level of narcissism that deprives your of the ability to know how to behave in public.
And I do hope the Brexiters are paying really, really close attention to the REAL nature of the special relationship that they’ve chosem to leave the EU for, which now has an awful lot of ‘if you don’t do as I want, f*ck you’ about it.
I hope that gives you the flavour 🙂 . But I’m not altogether surprised. He gets away with it so he’ll keep on doing it. And his supporters love it, I gather.

This was manifested in the fact that during the election campaign Hillary Clinton promised to oblige all churches in America to marry homosexuals, despite that the gays themselves, on whom Obama relied in the fight against Hillary Clinton, have no relation to the religious war.
Indeed, if the Bible instead of homosexuality forbade keeping aquariums, Hillary Clinton would require the churches to just float the tropical fish in the altar.
Marginalization is not good enough, but humiliation will not satisfy either.

I don’t agree with that at all – and I don’t think it’s the case in the UK (but await correction if I’m wrong).
Gay people should be allowed to have civil weddings or to marry in churches where the clergy are happy to perform the wedding service, as many are. I don’t remotely think any individual church or cleric should be obliged to marry gay couples if they think that conflicts with their faith.
But then I’m weird because neither do I think churches should feel remotely obliged to marry heterosexual ‘Christians in name only’ who just want a fancy wedding day and nice photos. But churches don’t seem to mind that. I don’t see much difference.
And Hillary’s vile whatever denomination or sexual persuasion one is.
