“Have you all lost your mind?” Vladimir Putin replied to one of Megyn Kelly’s thrusts about alleged Russian perfidy toward the US in the gala interview that debuted her new Sunday Night star-chamber on NBC. Old Vlad put his finger on something there. His view of the late goings-on in America is like that of the proverbial detached Martian observer of strange Earthly doings, rattling his antennae and clicking his mouth-parts in mirth.
To which retort, by the way, one would have to answer, ”Yes, absolutely.” The toils of slow economic collapse, accompanied by the ceaseless effort by various arms of the Deep State to spin “the narrative” around the voting public’s collective head, has driven the polity insane. And this, of course, is on view in the bedlam that US politics has become, Trump and all. I’m waiting for The New York Times to run the three-column headline that says Russia Racist, Misogynist, and Islamophobic to finally bring together the programmed paranoia of NeoCon / DemProg alliance with the esprit de corp of the new collegiate Red Guard.
Mr. Putin does not have to lift a finger to detonate the groaning garbage barge of US domestic affairs. It’s already ignited and is faring toward a very peculiar species of civil war. You can be sure that the NeoCon / DemProg axis is determined to get rid of Trump at all costs. Impeachment requires some sort of high crime or misdeamenor. So far, going on a year, they haven’t come up with any evidence that the Golden Golem of Greatness acted as a Russian agent in some fashion, and that itself has got to be a little suspicious, considering the thousands of clerks in the spinning mills of those legendary seventeen Intel outfits the government runs. How could they fail to come up with a video of the Donald and Vladimir swatting each other playfully with birch switches in a Moscow banya? Five TV sitcom writers could surely come up with an angle — as long as it was a plausible entertainment.
In the meantime, Trump prevails, the mad bull elephant of the Republican herd, majestically swinging his trunk against everything breakable in the political china shop while trumpeting “Covfefe! Covfefe!” Last week it was the Paris Climate Accords. The op-ed writers in the usual places bounced off the walls of their virtual rubber room in response. Paul Krugman had to be dragged down to hydrotherapy at the NYT after he set his hair on fire. And Rachel Maddow practically popped a carotid artery in her muscular neck from all that shrieking.
I’m a bit more sanguine about the US withdrawal. To me, the Paris Accords were just another feel-good PR stunt enabling politicians to pretend that they could control forces that are already way out-of-hand, an international vanity project of ass-covering. The coming economic collapse will depress global industrial activity whether anybody likes it or not, and despite anyone’s pretense of good intentions — and then we will have a range of much more practical problems of everyday life to contend with.
Of course, Trump cannot possibly see it that way, given his wish to bring back the America of humming factories and happy workers seeing the USA in their Chevrolets and all that. That fantasy will eventually fade as the inability to get anything done in Washington becomes manifest and obvious. When the “basket of deplorables” sees their hopes dribble away, they will start in with serious mischief of their own, without Trump having to prompt them. Then it will be a quixotic battle between them and the BLM / SJW proxies that the higher-up chickenshits of DemProgdom have so carefully groomed as their vanguard. There will be blood.
Yes, Mr. P, America has lost its mind. The whole thing has turned into some kind of nonstop Kardashian tranny monster truck shit-show of manufactured melodrama and lost causes, inducing a kind of global nausea that may ultimately prove more fatal than the rising surface temperature and melting icecaps. Russia, to its credit, and whatever else you think about it, has some regard for its own survival. Our country prefers the excitement of self-destruction.

Seems to me with everyone distracted by false flagfefe everything is going as planned. Everyone being properly distracted the Trumpster is free to rip up every regulation and barrier for the rich to get richer he can possibly find. The fake fake explosive vests was a nice touch.

If Trump were dedicated to making the rich richer, the globalist elitists wouldn’t be so committed to getting rid of him by any means necessary. He’s the fly in their Orwellian slave planet soup, and I hope they get all they so richly deserve.
Trump has no dedication to anything — certainly not the desperate voters who turned to him for lack of any other candidate who even pretended to notice their pain. (We all know what the Dems did to Bernie.) All Trump has is an ego, and an idiot-savant talent for getting it stroked. That’s it. That’s all he brings to the table. Not all of the elites suffer from Trump derangement syndrome, and the longer he stays in office, the better they’ll get at manipulating him to get what they want.
As the man with his finger on the nuclear button, Trump with his lack of self-control is a threat to the entire planet. But in terms of the elites, he’s really only a threat to the power structures of the big two parties, because he has exposed their fecklessness and complete lack of principle. If you want a real threat, imagine someone who had Trump’s way with the media who wasn’t also a shambling dimwit, and who really knew how to formulate and execute a political program (since Trump’s campaign was really just a branding exercise that spun out of control).
He is dedicated to one thing: being relevant and newsworthy.
It is his primary (only?) motivation, more than money or power,
and he’ll do anything to get/keep it.

Jim, you’re heading towards or hinting at something I’ve long wondered about. The global elite have to KNOW about depletion of cheap, high-EROEI oil. All their deviousness does not subtract from the basic fact that you need to be pretty smart (but also perhaps intelligent but idiot, in Taleb’s phrasing) to pull it off. Perhaps “climate change” is simply the global elite putting lipstick on the pig of declining per-capita energy; people are more willing to sacrifice for the planet than simply to do without because, uh, we burned it all and it’s not coming back.

@Sean, I believe you have hit the nail on the head–We hear from the Left about the nefarious Right, and from the Right about the nefarious Left, but in fact its more likely that there are multiple power blocs jockeying to keep their bit of control, and that NO ONE is at the helm of State. Aside from veto-ing policies that are not in their interests (or in the interests of those who are paying them off and promoting laws and programs that increase the payola, I see very little initiative from anyone to try to do what’s best for the most, and enable us all to get along.
Like television, politics is all “Pretenders pretending not to pretend.”

My guess is they don’t care. They only care that oil is still available–at any price–because being a billionaire in a world without oil is pointless.

Orlov blog post where he discussed life in rural Russia, particularly after the Soviet collapse, and how the fact that there was already plenty of food production and they were using horses and soldiers to carry it to market, and folks lived in tight communities where they could support one another, collapse was not nearly as bewildering or painful as it would be in our ‘burbs when Happy Motoring comes to a screeching halt. Or just runs out of gas and is abandoned at the side of the road.

With Nat Gas – of course not. But Nat Gas generates CO2 – wind and solar do not.
Ah but what they don’t tell you is all the toxic crap making solar panels creates! Don’t believe me look it up! making them is even more toxic than making computer parts.
Mean while making wind turbines also creates toxicity problems as well as c02 off gassing and once up and running kills tens of thousand of birds a year.
So a small problem in CO2 which can be easily corrected by planting billions of trees or the artificial solution of toxic solar panels with a short shelf life and bird murdering windmills?
AS the rainforests are hacked and burned the problem expands.

Solar and wind is too expensive and they may not even save any CO2 emissions since it takes so many rare minerals, steel and concrete to mine, refine and then there’s construction and maintenance —which uses a lot of CO2.

There are no good answers to the pickle we’re in now. Trump was simply codifying what was going to happen anyway. Any gentlemen’s “agreement” in Paris would never be ratified, and even if it was, it would simply be ignored. So why not just say that up front and be done with it? Good for Trump.
DA, After watching Tucker Carlson last week, I discovered that China and India (the world’s two biggest polluters) are not subject to the agreement. The US will be picking up billions of dollars in cost and those two countries will wind up getting subsidized by us taxpayers. That cinched it for me. Hail Trump! Trump’s statement about representing Pittsburgh not Paris was a great line.

There was/is an excellent answer to the “pickle we’re in now”. Unfortunately the self anointed smartest animals, on the planet known as Earth by its inhabitants, were/are unable to utilize their vaunted intelligence to inhibit the evolutionary survival of the species technique of population expansion ad nauseam. Humans could have avoided all of the ills toward which they race headlong had they acted upon the findings of early scientific proponents of reining in the exponential human population growth. Too many fucking humans will be the demise of the current crop of spaceship Earth’s fauna and flora. Fortunately the Sun is only about half way through it’s expected life cycle and perhaps in another 100-500 million years an intelligent species may again arise with enough moxie to pull it’s collective head out of it’s ass and recognize that uncontrolled population expansion coupled with science and greed is a recipe for ecological disaster. On the other hand perhaps not and “Fermi’s paradox” can be explained by a 100% probability that all intelligent species destroy themselves within a time frame that is but a blip in the age of any given star about which habitable planets circle.
I’ll give our “intelligent species” no more than 200 years tops, and I think it could very well happen in a tenth of that time. When the oil finally runs short enough to cause collapse (or earlier), the nukes (among other means) will come out, and that will be that.

Finc, I don’t know how realistic your 6-8x factor is because I don’t know where you got it from. But the current energy system incorporates a lot of hidden subsidies that conceal the true costs of energy. Being more honest about those costs is one of the ways we can get a grip on reality, and still possibly transition to a better energy system that can sustain some of the more worthwhile achievements of industrial society.
What’s more, we are already so far down the downslope of the petroleum net-energy curve that solar can already generate more energy than oil, and possibly than other fossil fuels. Every additional dollar invested in spewing carbon into the atmosphere is an additional theft from future generations. Trump’s withdrawal from the Paris accord will achieve nothing that he claims it will. It only signals fealty to a dying industry that may yet make our planet uninhabitable.
NYC signs on to the paris Accords. DeBlasio can decree that henceforth city employees take public transport, and can levy prohibitive taxes on aircraft at LaGuardia and Kennedy. For that matter so can all public servants in positions of authority in major metro areas.
That’ll show ’em.

Actually, it’s about nothing more temporary elected pols posturing for political points (and almost certainly hidden payoffs as well) about a problem they have no idea how to solve, and more importantly, given the constraints involved, wouldn’t actually try to solve even if they could.
As far as the rest of your hysterics Elrond, as the Archdruid is fond of saying, “all energy is local.” As in, how much energy you can bring to bear on a given problem at a specific point in time and space at a specific price determines it’s ultimate usefulness. In other words, waving your hands about more total energy from solar than oil, especially when solar is HEAVILY subsidized by current oil-based industrial technology, is simply a non-sequitur. Solar won’t power cars as we know them, it won’t power trucks, it won’t power trains, it won’t power ships, and it damn sure won’t power planes. It is simply not concentrated or local enough to be much good for anything, especially when you add on the considerable additional requirement of being able to support an already bankrupt exponential growth economy.
The fact remains in June 2017 just as it always has been, in order to continue industrial life as we know it, there simply IS NO replacement for cheap oil, and no known technology out there yet is going to change that.
DA: How to solve the problem is childishly simple: stop burning carbon. The consequences of burning carbon are enormous. The consequences of ceasing to burn carbon are also enormous, but the latter is only a danger to our lifestyle while the former is a danger to civilization itself. Grown-ups make choices, hopefully responsible ones. Of all the leaders on the world stage, Trump is the only one childish enough that he won’t even pretend he ought to do better. As for the others, are they hypocrites? If they are, that’s a good thing, because hypocrisy is the tribute that vice pays to virtue — virtue, in this case, meaning acting responsibly toward the planet and future generations. Better hypocritical virtue than earnest nihilism.
As for the rest of your comments, I’ll quote Yoda: “Always with you it cannot be done.” There’s plenty about our current industrial civilization that is worth fighting for, and there are always possibilities. My remark was simply pointing out that the EROEI of building solar right now has already met or exceeded the EROEI of oil and gas. People are not going to stop exploiting sources of energy just because fossil fuels are no longer viable. Efforts that yield a return will survive, while efforts that fail will fail. That doesn’t mean we can “keep driving to Wal-mart” but it does mean that JHK’s world made by hand is less than inevitable. As for Greer, he’s insightful but he doesn’t know every fucking thing. He believes that history is cyclical and the only things that happen are things that have happened before. He’s wrong. From time to time, there are genuinely new things under the sun.

Almost all of the world’s largest conventional oil fields are in decline and tight oil has low EROI. Much of the industry is highly indebted and per-capita world consumption has peaked a long time ago. From a recent HSBC report: “Oil demand is still growing by ~1mbd every year, and no central scenarios that we recently assessed see oil demand peaking before 2040.” 81% of the production of liquid oil is already in decline. HSBC sees between 3 and 4.5 million barrels per day of supply disappearing once peak oil production is reached. “In our view a sensible range for average decline rate on post-peak production is 5-7%, equivalent to around 3-4.5mbd of lost production every year.” Based on a simple calculation, HSBC estimates that by 2040, the world will need to find around 40 million barrels of oil per day to keep up with growing demand from emerging economies. That is equivalent to over 4 times the current crude oil output of Saudi Arabia. “Small oilfields typically decline twice as fast as large fields, and the global supply mix relies increasingly on small fields: the typical new oilfield size has fallen from 500-1,000mb 40 years ago to only 75mb this decade.” — This will exacerbate the problem of declining oil fields, and the lack of supply. The amount of new oil discoveries being made is pretty small. HSBC notes that in 2015 the discovery rate for new wells was just 5%, a record low. The discoveries made are also fairly small in size. There is potential for growth in US shale oil, but it currently represents less than 5% of global supply, meaning that it will not be able, single-handedly at least, to address the tumbling global supply HSBC expects. “Step-change improvements in production and drilling efficiency in response to the downturn have masked underlying decline rates at many companies, but the degree to which they can continue to do so is becoming much more limited.” Essentially HSBC argues that companies aren’t improving their efficiency at a quick enough rate, meaning that supply declines will hit them even harder.

Good post Elrond. I fear the end of carbon fuels will not come before collapse. The poor will do without while the rich burn Earth to a crisp. The Paris deal would not have become the solution, but it did get people on the right page. President Trump’s Climate plans will work just like his health care plans.
Solar and wind is much more expensive energy than coal, oil and nat gas. They are so unreliable that you basically have to have nearly 100% conventional power backup. Why would anyone want to pay DOUBLE the capital cost for the 100% backup (going forward)??

I’m not sure that there’s a dispute here between your point and mine. We’re both aware that there’s a reset coming. Looking at the pie chart at the top of the article you linked to, two-thirds of current electricity production comes from fossil fuels (oil/coal/natural gas), 10.6% from nuclear, the remainder from renewables (what’s the 0.4% “other”, geothermal?). Fossil fuels are failing, and nuclear may disappear as well given how dependent it is on (a) fossil-fuel inputs and (b) failing to account for decommissioning and long-term disposal costs.
In other words, three quarters of current electricity production is going away. The remaining renewables will increase to fill the gap if that’s possible, stay where it is, or it’ll fall back. But whatever it is, it’ll be the new going rate. There’s no point comparing how much more expensive solar and wind are than coal, oil and natural gas, since those won’t be around anymore. Anyone with the capacity to do so will pay what they have to for whatever’s available, if the alternative is freezing in the dark. Options that no longer exist won’t factor in.

You know, the United States took a long time to be united. I think it will take a while to break itself up. A kind of Manifest Destiny in reverse. So, maybe what we’ll see is a “great unraveling” of the country, as states and territories, and alliances of states and territories, dribble & melt away slowly over time, in an inverse relationship to federal power.
For most people, Washington DC is a long, long way away. It certainly is for me and for my neighbors here in northern Minnesota. The national capitol is a kind of a fuzzy idea. I’ve been thinking about this a lot lately. Almost every state in the Union is as powerful or more so than most countries in the world. Why do we need this overarching and overreaching federal government constantly meddling in our affairs and getting us into trouble with the rest of the world? The central government has become a burden to the rest of the country without much overall benefit. There’s nothing the federal government does that couldn’t be done better by the states, local governments or individuals except build a massive unnecessary military that harasses a large portion of the rest of the world. Imagine if all that capital that is sent to the capitol were kept by the states and individuals to be spent at the local level on such things as infrastructure instead of throwing it away into the abyss of the federal budget. It can only rule by consensus and if the states do not consent to be ruled by them then the whole thing will eventually fall apart. I for one think we will all be better off once that happens.

I think your time frame’s about right, although the war you anticipate is actually long since underway. The US basically declared war on all of humanity (and non-humanity for that matter!) after 9-11, so anything further will just be so much variation on a very well-established theme. What that war will look like on the ground is anyone’s guess, but I think it will be mostly next gen (electronic/cyber) and distributed over a very large area. But much of what you see overseas now is mostly a staged drama brought to you by US affiliated globalist actors, so expect much of the action to return to “the homeland” as we’re calling it now (Nazi connotations notwithstanding), as that’s where much (most?) of the potential resistance is these days.

The conflict between Qatar and its neighbors occurred a week after the summit of the Persian Gulf and the United States in Riyadh, when the Qatari news agency placed on behalf of the emir speech in support of building relations with Iran.
In fact, a week ago, US President Trump threatened all Arab states, promising them that “if they do not stop supporting terrorism, their lives will be very short” and their souls will not wind up in paradise.
And it is very possible that the Arab countries decided to make Qatar a scapegoat, in the hope that it was Qatar where the Clinton Foundation transferred several billion dollars.
But Qatar’s proposal to “build” relations with Iran on the eve of the summit says that it was Qatar who first decided to give up supporting terrorism, since the terrorist wars in Syria, Iraq and Lebanon are wars with Iran, which supports both President Assad in Syria and Shiites In Iraq, and the Hussites in Yemen.
All this is very reminiscent of Erdogan’s attack on terrorism two years ago, when, after the terrorist attack on Kurds in the town of Suruc, he took advantage of this as an excuse to attack the victims of terror – the Kurds – in the guise of fighting terror. Further, Turkey downed a Russian airplane in Syria from the pitch of Hillary Clinton and it required an attempted coup d’etat in order to stop Erdogan from going to a direct armed conflict with Russia.
But then that was Hillary Clinton, and now who?
If it turns out that the money of Clintons left Qatar, then I will have to admit that…

7. The rise of cryptocurrency as another possible alternative to fiat;
8. Trial balloons about why to suppress and control the internet (upon which cryptocurrencies largely depend). Child pornography was the cause du jour a few years ago, now it’s fake news and/or radicalization.

I have always agreed with you Jim, but here I must take issue. There are those (though they may be few) that have no sides that are not bathed in the light and I submit to you here and now that I am witness to a few. It is more than possible, though not exactly likely, that humans can evolve to a level where they can appreciate beauty without feeling the need to defile it. I don’t hide what my positions are. I’m an open book — what you see is what you get. Re-reading that sentence, I might reformulate it as, e.g., “If you had a gun you needed to conceal from the law”, since the rule of law is one of my baseline values. If he was abiding the law, no problem, but I still think nsa expressed a shitty attitude about women.
As for gun ownership, the gun culture in the U.S. is unhealthy at best. Its roots are in slaveowning culture, for one thing: the ‘militias’ of the second amendment were actually posses for rounding up escaped slaves. Even after the Civil War, the second amendment remained a tool for keeping African-Americans in subjection. To this day, racists see nothing as more majestic than a white man with a gun, and nothing as more threatening than a black man similarly armed.
The other reason I oppose gun culture is the underlying vision that prescribes violence as the first and best response to the uncertainties of the world — in other worlds, violence is positively valued. In my view, violence is negatively valued. It’s the last resort, after all the better alternatives have been exhausted. The second amendment expresses the former view, which is why I think it’s a bad law. America would be a better society if it turned against violence as a value. (Not that i expect to see that in my lifetime.)
When a crime is seconds away, the police are minutes away – sometimes many minutes. Can you deny it? Guess what, sport – they’re job is to keep public order and punish crimes THAT HAVE ALREADY HAPPENED. So whose job is it to protect you? Do I have to say it?
Need more proof? People have tried suing the Police for not protecting them from crime. They get nowhere. It’s not their job. How could it be? They can’t be everywhere at once.
This kind of ticking time-bomb scare-mongering is bollocks. This kind of us-and-them thinking just demonstrates that fear is in the driver’s seat. Read the full article for more of this flavour. Things like that happened in the South, not the North. Slaves didn’t want to be enslaved (big surprise). Southern culture countered this completely reasonable desire with the ubiquitous threat of violence, in a way that was unknown in the rest of the United States at the time. Yet the echo of this culture of violence continues in today’s gun culture. What’s more, having chosen the path of violence, slaveholders lived in terror of slave vengeance, and spread this terror into the general population. The echo of that terror carried on as well, via 100 years of Jim Crow, and is still resounding as the racism that persists to this day.
All in all, I could still be wrong — who knows? In any case, the Yale Law Journal is not amateurish, and they agree with me.
As for my last paragraph, you’re correct that violence is always a possibility. We’re all born with the capacity for violence, and heck, I eat meat. Is gravity a value? No, it’s a fact. Personally, this is how I perceive the current situation:
Trump managed to get elected in spite of massive fakes at polling stations in poor areas of big cities on both coasts. Moreover, both the EU and the Gulf states actively intervened in the elections, but Germany and Saudi Arabia intervened the most, not only supporting Hillary Clinton financially, but also making statements about the undesirability of Trump, and when Trump won it was a big blow to America’s friendly relations with these countries.
Moreover, even after Trump’s victory, Hillary did not calm down and went on to the plan B – denying the election results.
This plan B led to the fact that the re-examination of the results of the election revealed massive attributions in favor of Hillary Clinton, but Trump did not manage to initiate an investigation.
And Hillary shifted to plan C: provoking a nuclear war with Russia, since her control over the intelligence services and her Russia-gate, combined with a rupture of diplomatic relations and a military threat from Russia, allowed Trump to simply be arrested as a Russian spy.
But contrary to these plans, Trump all the same became president, and Bastinda resigned to just Russia-gate for sabotaging his presidency and trying to bring an impeachment.
I must say that she managed to sabotage the first hundred days of the Trump presidency, in particular, not allowing Trump to normalize relations with Russia, which, after the expulsion of diplomats and the confiscation of diplomatic property, were in such a hole that, in comparison with it, the Caribbean crisis seems like child’s play.

Let us for a moment consider the immune system. Even the unicellular organism is in possession of some form of immune system. I would like to describe the family, the community, the society and the culture as complex multicellular organisms. I would argue that as complex forms of life each has some form of immune system.

However, the world still has twenty years or so before we pass through plus 2 degrees. Everybody at the Paris talks understood that they would have to hold another conference in around five years’ time and come up with bigger cuts then. It’s salami tactics, which is bad science but good politics, and it could still deliver the goods.

I realize this is off-topic, and our host will probably write about today’s Senate testimony in tomorrow’s essay, but I want to say that I believe James Comey is an American hero. If you listen to his testimony, and read his statement, it is clear he has the highest ideals of honesty, integrity and devotion to his duty. While they are on opposite sides of the scales of justice, I would put him alongside Edward Snowden and Julian Assange as pivotal characters in world history during the early part of the 21st century.
He’s sweating buckets because he knows what a fool he looks. He’s got nothing because the Kookspiracy got nothing. He has admitted to leaking his own memos about Trump to the press. A traitor in other words.
McCain refered to Comey as president at one point. An apt symbol of the whole foolish unraveling.

And then he was interrogated by the Democratic Senator from California and the former chairman of the commission, Dianne Feinstein, who forced Comey to admit that at the moment when this happened, he was afraid and could not tell Trump that his “hopes of stopping the investigation of General Flynn” are not ethical and as the FBI director he will not be guided by it and even promised him not to do it.
Comey said he leaked memos in response to Trump tweets. But the tweets were actually in response to the leaked memos. Out of such twisted wood like Comey, nothing straight can ever be built. It was just short of 26 months from the breaking and entering at the Watergate to the resignation. Though a minor crime there was an arrest record and then the subsequent investigation of the attempted cover up. As of today – innuendo,no arrest, no subpoena, no inidictment. Best laugh of the day – “damaging to the office of the president”. Where in the hell have these idiots been for the last 24 years?

Without going through all the details, Bill’s “impeachment” was designed to inoculate the office of the POTUS.
Why? Because TPTB knew that high crimes and treason against the American People would be done and they had to cultivate a weak strain of the upcoming crimes, put President Clinton through the impeachment process, impeach him, and THEN let him go free in the Senate because the evidence (inoculation) was too weak to find him, “Guilty.”
It’s the same thing when giant corporations deliberately ARRANGE rigged lawsuits against themselves by legal theater. By having the lawsuit go forward and then defeated (or thrown out) they will be protected when the REAL CRIME is committed, at some later date.
In both cases of corporate and Presidential malfeasance, both are now protected. They can show how past malfeasances didn’t stick and were found, “Not Guilty.” Since the Office of the POTUS cannot be tried again for same crime, the way was cleared for GW Bush, Viceroy Cheney, and The Obamination to do the horrific crimes they did.
All Trump has to do is use the Clinton inoculation to ward off the Deep State and show how Bush, Cheney, and Obama got away with murder. Either that or blow the lid off, go on TV, and let We Teh Sheep see the treason and malfeasance done against them over the past 25 years. Hell, go all the way back to the USS Liberty while he’s at it!
