One amusing angle on the news media broadside about Russia “hacking” the US election is the failure to mention — or even imagine! — that the US incessantly and continually runs propaganda psy-ops against every other country in the world. And I’m not even including the venerable, old, out-in-the-open propaganda organs like Voice of America and Radio Free Europe (reminder: the Iron Curtain came down a quarter century ago). Do you suppose that nobody at Langley, or the Pentagon, or the NSA’s sprawling 1.5 million square foot Utah Data Center is laboring night and day to sow confusion among other societies to push our various agendas?
The main offensive started with The Washington Post’s publication on Nov 26 of “The List,” a story calling out dozens of blogs and web news-sites as purveyors of “fake news” fronting for Russian disinformation forces. The list included Zero Hedge, Naked Capitalism, and David Stockman’s blog. There were several whack-job sites mixed in the list for seasoning — The Daily Stormer (Nazis), Endtime.com (Evangelical apocalyptic), GalacticConnection (UFO shit). The rest range between tabloid-silly and genuine, valuable news commentary. What else would you expect in a society with an Internet AND a completely incoherent consensus about reality?
Pretty obviously, the struggle between mainstream news and Web news climaxed over the election, with the mainstream overwhelmingly pimping for Hillary, and then having a nervous breakdown when she lost. Desperate to explain the loss, the two leading old-line newspapers, The New York Times and The Washington Post, ran with the Russia-Hacks-Election story — because only Satanic intervention could explain the fall of Ms. It’s-My-Turn / I’m-With-Her. Thus, the story went, Russia hacked the Democratic National Committee (DNC), gave the hacked emails to Wikileaks, and sabotaged not only Hillary herself but the livelihoods of every myrmidon in the American Deep State termite mound, an unforgivable act.
Also interestingly, these newspapers and their handmaidens on TV, were far less concerned as to whether the leaked information was true or not — e.g. the Clinton Foundation donors’ influence-peddling around arms deals made in the State Department; the DNC’s campaign to undermine Bernie Sanders in the primaries; DNC temporary chair (and CNN employee) Donna Brazille conveying debate questions to HRC; the content of HRC’s quarter-million-dollar speeches to Wall Street banks. All of that turned out to be true, of course.
Then, a few weeks after the election, the US House of Representatives passed H.R. 6393, the Intelligence Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2017. Blogger Ronald Thomas West reports:
Section 501 calls for the government to “counter active measures by Russia to exert covert influence … carried out in coordination with, or at the behest of, political leaders or the security services of the Russian Federation and the role of the Russian Federation has been hidden or not acknowledged publicly.”
The measure has not been passed by the Senate or signed into law yet, and the holiday recess may prevent that. But it is easy to see how it would empower the Deep State to shut down whichever websites they happened to not like. My reference to the Deep State might even imply to some readers that I’m infected by the paranoia virus. But I’m simply talking about the massive “security” and surveillance matrix that has unquestionably expanded since the 9/11 airplane attacks, creating a gigantic NSA superstructure above and beyond the Central Intelligence Agency, the Department of Defense’s DIA, and the hoary old FBI.
A little paranoia about the growing fascist behavior of the US government is a useful corrective to trends that citizens ought to be concerned about — for instance, the militarization of police; the outrageous “civil forfeiture” scam that allows police to steal citizens cash and property without any due process of law; the preferential application of law as seen in the handling of the Clinton Foundation activities and the misconduct of banking executives; the attempt to impose a “cashless society” that would herd all citizens into a financial surveillance hub and eliminate their economic liberty.
These matters are especially crucial as the nation stumbles into the next financial crisis and the Deep State becomes desperate to harvest every nickel it can to rescue itself plus the cast of “systemically important” (Too-Big-To-Fail) banks and related institutions like Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, which are about to once again be left holding colossal bags of worthless non-performing mortgages, not to mention the pension funds and insurance companies that will also founder in the Great Unwind that is likely to commence as Trump hangs his golden logo over the White House portico.

You know, I have to laugh at the irony. Many of the Alt Right Breitbart Fascist Creeps who haunt so many Comment Sections at various blogs were terrified Hillary Clinton would start WWIII with Russia. They used this as one of many justifications to vote for Trump instead.
FYI, I’m not advocating for Hillary — my blog clearly delineates my thoughts & feelings on the matter so there is no dispute.
The irony is, their choice for POTUS, DJT, may start WWIII, the War To End All Wars, not with Russia but instead with China over this coalescing kerfuffle related to Taiwan. I was watching MSNBC this morning and I was flabbergasted to see the majority of the panel justifying and rationalizing and normalizing this Nutjob’s latest Buffoonery towards China. He is completely incapable of understanding cultural nuance.
It is crucial for Orientals to preserve an Honorable Face to The World, and Trump is directly assaulting that cultural phenomenon. It’s so important to them culturally, they will take extreme measures to Save Face. Sure, you can try to rationalize it by saying that Trump is getting tough with the Chinese, but then you are also rationalizing Hillary’s stance of getting tough with the Russians. At least have some consistency.

For a complete happiness of his critics, Trump organized by the end of the week a serious diplomatic incident, agreeing to a telephone conversation with the President of Taiwan. The fact that from the point of view of the Chinese leadership, Taiwan – is an unrecognized state and, in general, the Americans agreed with the Chinese principle of “One China” back in the 70’s in order to establish a better relationship with Mainland China. US does not officially recognize Taiwan, Taiwan does not have an American Embassy (its functions are performed by a private organization) and in general – Trump is the first US president since 1979, who held official telephone conversations with Taiwanese leader.
This week we have a guaranteed fireworks of angry statements of Chinese diplomats, the media and politicians, who (justifiably so) will accept this gesture as a departure from the former relationship with China.
Trump reasonably says that there is no point in making so much fuss from the conversation with the leader of Taiwan if the US sells weapons to Taiwan worth billions of dollars.
It should be noted that for Trump serious conflict with China – is the inevitable consequence of his economic program, so that the “pottery smashing” can (and perhaps should) better occur now.
Putin would like nothing more than to see America & China go to war and his Orange DayGlo Quisling Boody Boy Trump is just the Pussy-Grabbing Beyotch to make it happen.

The week before that, according to Jones, Obama was on the brink of declaring martial law and suspending/cancelling the election.(Mind you, I think that trope has been around for a while now, and has been recycled as necessary.)
This utter tripe then becomes the ‘talking points’ in bars and living rooms of the deep Red State strongholds. These people BELIEVE these things, and don’t seem to worry that they turn out not to be true – the Lib’rals couldn’t pull it off ‘coz Almighty Alex caught them out!’.

My sincere hope for Mr. Trump is that his what Jesse Ventura was for me here in Minnesota. There are actually many parallels in the rise of both of these men in face of fierce opposition by the Establishment and MSM, and how both of these men have started their administrations. Ventura was one of the best governors that I have had in my lifetime. He was a mix of freethinking pragmatist and right leaning populist who left Minnesota better than he left it, regardless of the wannabe social democrats in the Twin Cities think of him.
I still watch some of the old debates between the majors and Ventura in the middle, with ole Jesse wrecking ’em verbally. Oh man, it was golden.
I know that Trump and Ventura worked together loosely in the Reform Party movement, and I hope that Trump continues that kind of reformist/populist angle.

Stepping back from the planet for some perspective, we see a myopic struggle for control – control of the levers of power, control of thought, control of societies. Are any of the contenders able to control their individual lives? Or are they able only to operate within the confines of their situations?

Since political parties in America are merely a distraction, and news of the Deep State as puppeteer kicks in, one by one, supporters of the status quo withdraw their support, take back their permission, and stop delegating their decision making.
Some even go so far as to supply their own needs with their own hands. Others liberate their own minds, often liberating their own hearts too. I know people (well, one person) who have payed everything for freedom.

The world and the politics of the United States has gotten so weird that there is no longer any way of guessing which way to turn that will allow for one’s survival, either economically or physically. It seems we have put ourselves on a trajectory that will inevitably lead to conflict. But how widespread will the conflict be when it comes, and will it come home to the United States? I think so.
I am concerned about the breakdown of infrastructure and systems that provide for the basic sanitation and health of our society. When a lot of people live in close proximity and water and sewage treatment are no longer working, at least reliably, disease can rampage through a population and kill many of the very young and very old, and quite a few in between. Imagine when antibiotics become very scarce, or immunizations against things like the flu are impossible to get, something most of us take for granted now.
I agree with many of the individuals who regularly post here that our economic system is “eating its young” and is due to fail, sucking up all that money I’ve been REQUIRED to sink into Social Security and pension plans over the years. If currency is outlawed I don’t think there will be much security into having bought physical precious metals for trade, since the government can also make it a crime to own them. It would almost be as bad as slavery was during the colonial period here, or during the first century of the United States’ existence, except there would be no way of escaping this new kind of slavery.
While I don’t think firearms ownership will ever lead to open revolt against an oppressive government, I’d like to still have one or two around to scare off the more timid of those who might want to loot what little I will have left, but the fact is I am old and tired and unlikely to be able to employ the level of violence that would keep the most determined criminals at bay when things really break down.
I want to be able to plan, but all I feel I can do is improve my health and overall fitness, acquire skills long neglected (planting and harvesting some of our own food, using manual tools, etc), and learn about ways to do with much less or without. Stockpiling weapons and food is a relatively short-term solution, although it might help one get over the “hump” when things get really dicey.
I have eliminated debt, although the government can always find a way to levy a tax that, when it can’t be paid in a cash poor society, will allow them to seize your property.
I probably should invest in relationships to a greater degree. That may be the most valuable currency during the bad times.

Nice post that echoes much of what I believe as well. Gold, silver and other precious items won’t be as valuable as toilet paper, soap and fresh water. I keep guns, but I’m not going to draw attention to myself. If things get dicey I might try and build a shelter under my house with an escape hatch through the floor. I doubt my son and I can defend ourselves against anything other than the occasional marauder. Living low and inconspicuous and building relationships with neighbors to collaborate and share (small scale economy) is going to be the best way to survive if the grid goes down.
What pisses me off is that the 1% are fortifying themselves. The water, sewer, power and internet may go off for most of us, but it won’t for them. Their life will go on and it will be protected by the militarized police while the Bully-in-Chief tells us to shut up and take it.

Even if 38 electors switched their vote Congress will have the final say and Trump will be President. No way around it.
A constitutional amendment may be necessary to keep this from happening again. I don’t favor direct vote because it would allow a handful of the most populous states to elect a President the rest of us do not want. But we could amend to constitution to say that to be elected President a candidate must have both the necessary Electoral votes plus the popular vote. Failure to get both will result in a single run-off of the top 2 candidates. After a run-off it goes to Congress.

As for Trump, he is not going to rescue the coal industry. Those coal miners are not getting their jobs back because Trump has promised to battle domestic environmental regulations. That may not give the industry the lift it hopes, because market forces have been the real problem for companies, not regulations.
Plus Trump probably doesn’t know what CCS is anyway. It is not mentioned in Trump’s “America First Energy Plan” (his first 100 days action plan). If he doesn’t even mention it, has never spoken of it, is not aware of it, is ignorant about it, there is little chance carbon capture and storage will be implemented. Technical feasibility becomes irrelevant without political will.

I reject none of your premises, but I consider them all suspect. Climate change theory is based on computer models of Earth’s climate… models which by all measure are incomplete. Climate change is an educated guess, with vast scientific consensus. The guess, however is corrupted by politics…power and money at the highest level. What’s interesting to me is how idealogues on both ends of the political spectrum are both divergent and yet similar. Divergent in that the rabid left is hoping for Donald Trump to fail spectacularly while those on the far right will never see or admit failure,period . But both are similar in that they issue self-validating declarations from an economically inoculated vantage point.
Personally, I am rooting for a rip-roaring ‘animal spirit’ economy under DT; I do not want the economy to tank because I will personally suffer since I’m not “inoculated” from political/economic fallout. I recall the Fall of 08 far too well and it felt like an economic Siberia for years afterward and in fact, never really fully rebounded.
Obviously, there is going to be a learning curve for anyone undertaking such a Herculean challenge as stepping into the Oval Office and I expect, like John Elway as a rookie, Trump may have a moment or two where he lines up behind the guard as opposed to center. This is to be expected and not something to make political hay about. If the social safety net is going to be slashed as seems inevitable, one can only hope and root for a countervailing economic upsurge at the end of the day. But this will be a very tricky and difficult feat to pull off.
Like Elway, Trump most assuredly has great “street ball” instincts. The great danger for Trump , IMO–always and forever; just my two cent opinion–is he risks losing himself in the learning curve phase amidst the smothering/enveloping influence of traditional GOP interests. When in fact, the old GOP is now the Donald Trump party. I hope Trump continues to assert himself even when “learning the ropes” and Steve Bannon will no doubt help. In fact, if “economic populism” successfully prevails, Trump will peel away aspects of the Democratic Party and virtually assure himself reelection.

Trump wants China to hang itself, and pay for the rope too
China’s problem regarding Trump’s demand to appreciate Yuan to the dollar is not only connected with the Beijing unwillingness to bend under the new American administration and cut its economic growth by dealing a painful blow to Chinese exports, but also with the objective financial constraints. The fact that the Yuan (if it is not maintained artificially) should fall in value against the dollar and the attempts to raise the exchange rate artificially would be for Beijing very, very expensive.
Now China is gradually burning its currency reserves to slow down the devaluation of the Yuan caused by flight of the capital, and Trump demands the impossible – to raise the Chinese currency. To meet this demand China would have to actually burn all of its foreign exchange reserves, throwing them into the furnace of the currency market.
If just slowing of the fall of the Renminbi required to spend 25% of China’s reserves, the attempt to “raise” will lead to their rapid exhaustion. In fact, the new White House administration proposes China to hang itself, and even pay for a rope. Obviously, this option is unacceptable for Beijing.
On the other hand, the new US administration has other tools to deprive China of a large part of the positive effects of a reduced rate of Yuan. The most obvious option (which is already being actively discussed by the Japanese) is to refuse to recognize China as a market economy and to take advantage of the WTO rules, which allow you to enter tariff barriers against such countries.
In an extreme case, there is always an option to set up anti-Chinese customs duty, and screw the WTO rules – that would be in the American style.

In the case of a scientist, these days at least, they rely on grants and that money directs their research. That money, the scientist’s remuneration, taints his/her work. They have to remain within the confines of the research and the stated mission of it, but what if the research takes them elsewhere — to an outcome that is not in the best interests of the benefactor funding the research? It’s more than likely, or most always, abandoned and the scientists direct their efforts elsewhere.
As for journalists, the same applies. Even Hedges. He writes books & articles. He’s remunerated for his “journalism.” He’s developed a following and an audience who remunerate him by paying to read his words. I would not even consider your premise, if true, worthy of undue concern…that is what we, and all other countries do (or would do) if able. What I am concerned about is the incessant drumbeat of the Democrats to vilify Russia, and maybe take direct action as a result of their “findings”. It would be impossible to quantify the “aberration” that might have resulted from various Emails..but it might offer an excuse for “rectification” of the apparent results.

Human beings have an innate need for “lineage” validation. Just look at all the past life believers stating they were such and such king, queen or aristocrat/famous person in a past life.

I agree with Hedges. He said it well. But I don’t agree with him about the former Yugoslavia. I think he’s not as interested in separating fact from fiction when it comes to that conflict.
What I mean to say is, that conflict goes so deep, speaking of the deepening of The Deep State, it makes your head spin. It’s many layers deep — a veritable onion. And look, surprise, all these many years later what sprouted in the wake of Yugoslavia’s demise is a consortium of Narco States run by what can effectively be called Narco Syndicates trafficking in flesh and heroin and all manner of vice.

One theory was they were massacred by the Spanish, who had been cruising the eastern seaboard for 50 years guarding against the French and English incursions. A few years earlier they had wiped out a rather large colony of French Huegonots near what is now St Augustine, Fla. Miller theorizes some of some of the colonists starved to death, some were killed by Indians, and the rest were used as slaves to work the coppermines near what is now Cherry Hill, NC. As late as 1650 the English sent out expeditions to search for survivors, but none were ever located.
