Close your eyes, click your heels three times, and tell me if you actually know what the fuck is happening in Syria. There’s an awful lot about the poison gas attack that doesn’t add up for the casual observer. It was only a week ago that the US enunciated a new policy that we would be content for Bashar al Assad to remain in power presiding over the Syrian government — after years of grousing and threats against him. Apparently Trump Central had concluded that Assad was a better alternative than another failed state in the Middle East with no government at all.
That policy change was a yuge benefit for Assad since it removed any pretext for US subterfuge or “black box” mischief against him. He was rather busy fighting a civil war, after all. Against whom? A mash-up of Jihadi forces ranging from Isis (so-called), to al Qaeda and Jabhat al Nusra, its spinoff gang dedicated specifically against Assad personally. Assad’s relations with Isis were ambiguous and complex. Isis had used Syria as a staging area for its operations next door in Iraq. It was rumored that Assad purchased oil from Isis. Yet Isis had participated in actions against Assad. In any case, all of the Jihadis were Sunni, in opposition to Assad’s Iran-leaning regime. Assad himself belongs to the Alawite sect of Islam, a twig on the Shia branch. Syria as a whole is a majority Sunni population, so Assad and his father Hafez before him (President 1971 – 2000) have represented a minority (12 percent) in an era of inflamed Sunni-Shia passions.
Trusting that you’re not additionally confused by all this, why would Assad choose this moment — only days after the US granted him a pass on remaining in power — to do the one thing guaranteed to bring the wrath of the US down him, namely, kill a lot of civilians, including women and children, with poison gas? Either Assad is inconceivably stupid or possibly the gas attack is not exactly what happened.
Russia has claimed that Assad’s air force attempted to bomb a “rebel” (al Qaeda? Al Nusra? Isis?) ammunition depot that apparently contained supplies of Sarin nerve gas. Neither the US government or the American media has presented any arguments to counter that hypothesis. The New York Times banged the war drum as loudly as possible in the days after the incident. And now, of course, Trump Central has fired $60 million worth of cruise missiles at Assad’s main air force base. Assad’s spokesmen denied responsibility for the attack and the Russians are still asking for conclusive evidence via the UN Security Council.
The current incident appears to be — or was engineered to be — a replay of the August 2013 gas incident that left President Barack Obama looking weak and indecisive for not carrying out retaliation against Assad “crossing a line in the sand” against human decency. And so you have Mr. Trump, who may feel now that he cannot afford to appear weak and indecisive — above all other considerations, including the truth about what really happened at Khan Sheikhoun, Idlib province of Syria. So he bombed an airport, after warning the Russians to remove their personnel from the vicinity. In the event that the world ever does learn what actually occurred at Khan Sheikhoun, and the truth turns out differently than the current narrative, Mr. Trump can say, “We only bombed some Syrian air force infrastructure… no biggie… no women and children harmed.”
The outstanding question remains: what might have possibly motivated Bashar al Assad to turn upside down a situation of great advantage to himself mere days after he achieved it? It will be interesting to see if a credible response emerges from the hall of mirrors that US policy has become.

Or course the sarin “attack” was a false flag. Though it appears to have been accidental, the opportunity was just too great for the MIC profiteers to miss. The danger, it seems to me, is that when (no longer if) they get their “conventional war” with Russia, safely off the shores of the Homeland, at some point on of the protagonists will find itself uncomfortably in arrears on that battlefield. At which point, the counter would be nuclear weapons, until that time held back.
Which of the two powers finds itself in that dilemma is not important. The decision makers of each are insufficiently mature to disregard his fragile ego and withdraw. This is how pregnancy and war begins.

Trump is the Deep State’s bitch now. This is exactly why I wasn’t about to let myself be suckered into voting for either candidate our utterly toxic and morally-bankrupt political duopoly was offering up back in November.
Yep. Trump finally received the offer that he couldn’t refuse. The good news, for him at least, is that the pressure to remove him might ease up a bit now. The bad news for the rest of us is that the Network/Deep State/MICC is back in charge again. And I’m guessing that they’re seriously pissed as well!
Don’t know that you can call what we’re facing now WWIII or not, since it’s basically been underway since 9/11 anyway. But Russia’s entry into the festivities as a viable foe should at least mark a serious intensification of the efforts. We’ll see. I don’t think the US has the stomach for this. Missile strikes are mostly a relatively harmless way to drum up concern/support at home. Any actual land war in Eurasia would require a level of effort that the US has been incapable of mustering for decades now.

Russia has drawn the line with Syria and Iran. They’re not going to give USA a pass. We’d have to be insane to get in a land war with Russia.
Ask yourself this: Have you seen anything other than sheer insanity in this country’s internal political dialogue of late?
If you have the financial incentive for war and none of your family or friends are going to the meat grinder – in fact if you feel nought but sheer hatred for those who will die for your profit, then a war with Russia makes a lot of sense.
This is unbelievable. Trump has gone from drain the swamp to swimming with the gators. And some of my fellow deplorables, as well as Hillaryites are shouting yahoo for the Trumpster to be stirring up a war with Russia. Looks like the beginning of the long-awaited WWIII to me.
Nothing unbelievable about it. Trump has no center, moral or otherwise. Never has, never will. Certainly he has no principles, even bad ones like his more jackbooted followers. All he has is an ego. That’s it.
Trump sussed out what people wanted to hear and blared it back at them. Some may have believed him, while many others simply took the opportunity to express their desire for something — anything — other than more of the same. As a result, the strong get to go on doing as they will, while the weak continue to suffer what they must. Anyone who thought Donald J. Trump of all people was the person to change that dynamic really is a clown.
We hoped. He was the only one saying anything sane. In other words, things not said for generations. In other words, you’re wrong – at least as far as his campaign is concerned. Sure, it would have been better if someone more respectable came forward and said it – but no one ever did. So we went with what we had. Someone had to try and stop you people.
And yes, Elrond supporting mass 3rd World immigration IS the policy of the Deep State. You are one with them. Stop pretending otherwise. If you don’t want to be, you have to give up supporting their number one policy.
And you also believe in the ridiculous Syrian refugee meme. Many if not most of them aren’t Syrian. And most are young men in designer clothes. Doesn’t that even give you pause for a second – especially considering the expansionistic beliefs of Islam?
Glad to read that you’re reconsidering Trump, Janos. The Trump we voted for is not the Trump we got. For me, if Trump started a new war, I was done with him. Trump forgets that he was elected by the America-first, anti-war Right. I think it was a purely emotional response by Trump, like Merkel’s in Sept 2015 (both extraverts, like most politicians and journalists). Not thought out, just pictures of children and gut instinct. I imagine however that few of his closest advisors tried to talk him out of it. I have barely followed this. Am I right about this last point? Does anyone here understand the domestic political background to this extraordinary event?
What we had in November was a referendum, not an election. Very few pundits or politicians (including Trump) seem to have figured this out yet.
Voters didn’t go to the polls to elect a President. They went to the polls to vote on whether they wanted to continue the status quo or plunge it like a stopped-up toilet.
Some 63 million voted to get out the plunger. Donald Trump just happened to be the guy who volunteered to roll up his sleeves and do the dirty job that needed to be done.
It still needs to be done. And it WILL get done. It could have happened peacefully, within the established political structure. But the political hacks, the Party leaders and the Deep State, have refused to let it happen that way.
Remember JFK’s maxim: Those who do not allow peaceful revolution will get a violent one.
What’s coming now is either social collapse or a military coup, or both. A lot of people are going to be sorry that Trump wasn’t allowed to do what he was sent to Washington to do.
Let’s assume for a minute that it was a false flag event of some kind. There are only two ways it could happen. First, the attack was carried out by American weaponry which implies military complicity; or, it was carried out by agents and operatives living and working inside Syria independently. The former seems too risky and unlikely. The latter is certainly possible but where would they get the gas and how would they deliver it? It seems more likely that the rebels had the gas stored with ammo and it was hit inadvertently by Syrian jets. Or maybe it was not inadvertent. If Syria knew there was gas stored then it might be considered a backdoor gas attack. Plausible deniability.
I think the policy of the US has been that civil war causing anarchy and chaos is the best way to prevent another strongman who refuses to do our bidding from emerging. It also keeps Russia from asserting more influence in the area. Just keep the oil flowing and the hell with everything else.
Add in the fact that much of this mysterious gas attack could have easily just been fabricated outright. Watching the stupid bitch Nikki Haley deliver her little sob story reminded me of nothing so much as Colin Powell putting forth the case for Iraqi WMDs. The people running these scams must be rolling in the aisles at how easy and brutally effective running the same old scams seems to be. Probably have it converted to a computer algorithm by now,or even a smart phone app. If this, do this. IF that, do that. Rinse, repeat.
When Trump installed Romneyite never-Trumper Haley in as UN Ambassador I just could not believe it. I thought that either Trump had no idea what he was doing or there was another agenda afoot. I guess it’s both. Lincoln’s “team of rivals” is one thing, but passing out high profile jobs to your enemies is a recipe for disaster. I have no idea what is going on inside Trump’s fevered brain, but somehow some way he must be stopped. BTW, I voted for Trump, but only because he seemed to be the peace candidate. Boy was I fooled. Best to quit voting altogether – it means nothing.

Frankly, I have no problem whatsoever with the US and Russia working together to solve the crisis in Syria. In a different world at a different time, Rex Tillerson would have been dispatched to Moscow for high level talks about whether Syria used gas intentionally, and how to respond. Nowadays, the response is already programmed. As someone said above, “there’s an app for that.”
The so-called “crisis” in Syria is nothing more than a canard to justify more perpetual war. While I hear and respect your argument that Putin might be in on all this as well, I’m not yet ready to cross that bridge, nor do I think the evidence even remotely supports it. But yes, it should be a legitimate concern to be on the watch for in the future.

BTW– during WW2 the U.S had chemical weapons secretly stored on cargo ships at an Italian port during the invasion of Italy. The Luftwaffe bombed the ships and the resulting explosions and fires spread these poisons all over, killing both U.S military and Italian civilians. Many of the injured died because doctors and medics had no idea where the symptoms where coming from because the U.S military kept its mouth shut because they where afraid if the Germans found out the U.S was shipping chemical weapons to Europe, the Germans would prepare their own stockpiles for use.

They are saying that the kill pattern is not consistent with an accidental release coming from bombing a store of chemical weapons but rather that the dispersion patterns show deliberate use of chemicals to produce maximum impact. This is not inconsistent with a scenario where Assad bombed the area with the intent of hitting a rebel ammunition dump and not dropping/dispersing chemical weapons himself, and perhaps a third party using the opportunity of a Syrian bombing to quickly disperse the chemicals and make it look like the result of the bombing itself rather than a second event. A little pre-staged materials and maybe some decent intel ahead of time telling them the time and location of an airstrike could go a long way.
Wouldn’t someone like ISIS have an interest in staging such an event, to bring Trump and the US back in line against Assad and Russia, to bring US military forces to the region so they can fight the fight they want to fight? Or maybe Trump (or someone who is looking out for him) has an interest in distracting the US from doing other things such as investigating his actions during 2015-2016 where he may have (willingly or just stupidly and unwittingly) aided Russia in their quest to take HRC down a notch or three?
Keep in mind that ISIS is nothing more than a US created and loosely controlled front group for Islamic Terror Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of the CIA or whatever US Dark Ops group who owns them these days. So when you say “to bring Trump and the US back in line against Assad and Russia” you’re actually talking about US interests trying to influence US policy. It’s important to be clear about these things.
Sarin gas is not all that difficult to manufacture. The Aum Shinrikyo folks in Japan managed to do it.

There are now six grounds to impeach Trump and Pence.
First: In taking the oath of office, a president promises to “faithfully execute the laws and the constitution.” That’s Article II Section 2.
But Trump is unfaithfully executing his duties as president by accusing his predecessor, president Obama, of undertaking an illegal and impeachable act, with absolutely no evidence to support the accusation.
Second: Article I Section 9 of the Constitution forbids government officials from taking things of value from foreign governments. But Trump is making big money off his Trump International Hotel by steering foreign diplomatic delegations to it, and will make a bundle off China’s recent decision to grant his trademark applications for the Trump brand — decisions Chinese authorities arrived at directly because of decisions Trump has made as president.
Third: The 1st Amendment to the Constitution bars any law “respecting an establishment of religion or prohibiting the free exercise thereof.” But Trump’s ban on travel into the United States from six muslim countries — which he initiated, advocated for and oversees — violates that provision.
Fourth: The 1st Amendment also bars “abridging the freedom of the press.” But Trump’s labeling the press “the enemy of the people,” and choosing who he invites to news conferences based on whether they’ve given him favorable coverage, violates this provision.
Fifth: Article II Section 3 of the Constitution defines “treason against the United States” as “adhering to their enemies, giving them aid and comfort.” Evidence is mounting that Trump and his aides colluded with Russian operatives to win the 2016 presidential election.
Sixth: The strikes against Syria — done in the absence of a U.N. Security Council resolution, and without any apparent justification of self-defense — violate Article 2(4) of the United Nations Charter, which requires the U.S. and all other signatory states to “refrain in their international relations from the threat or use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of any state.”

Regardless of who’s in office the media always is compelled to rally ’round the flag, and convince the sheeple to do the same. Opposing wars is not good business for corporate America.
Those of us on the anti-war right have lost all faith in Trump. Alt-right spokesman Richard Spencer has put out a good video condemning Trump. It’s worth a listen. Maybe we can form a coalition and join you on the front lines. After all, if it wasn’t for the anti-war right, it would have been Queen Hillary calling in the airstrikes and setting up her no-fly zone. If that was the case, no doubt you would not be complaining.

Reminds me of the book I am now reading “by Rick Atkinson, “The Day of Battle” in which the author details the German air raid on the Allied harbor in Bari, Italy that resulted in a large mustard gas release and the deaths of many soldiers and civilians during WWII:

After several years of watching pictures of beautiful cities turned to rubble by Syrian government forces and with a long history of brutality by these same forces, along comes a bull in a china shop by the name of Donald Trump smashing things to bits disregarding the agreements and fears which have prevented effective American action against the head choppers. Now we shall find out if the American troop buildup in Iraq which Trump has been implementing over the last month will be Syriously used.

What’s the motivation for killing civilians?
The civil war started after President Bashar al-Assad’s regime violently cracked down on peaceful protesters, and ordinary citizens took up arms to try to oust his dynastic regime.
So from the beginning, Assad’s enemy was opposition members in his own country. In other words, rebels who had started out as civilians. And that’s why civilians are at risk.
“In general, the regime’s strategy has been to inflict mass punishment against opposition-supported populations or populations that were perceived to be supportive of the opposition in order to prevent the formation of a viable alternative to the regime,” said Chris Kozak, Syria research analyst at the Institute for the Study of War.
The question is what will Trump do next? Will he make another failed state like Lybia where chaos becomes the government? Could that be his intent or does he have any intent at all? The only thing we know is that most of our news will be lies and manipulations and that the American people will have no say in what happens or a coherent understanding of it. Without being able to use his barrel bombs to discipline his people any more Assads best move would be to retire in the south of France and let the Syrian sand blow where it will. That, or wait for a seal team to take him out.

This is the usual, greaseball Middle East, never ending tit-for-tats and never any resolution until everyone including the combatants are at the who-gives-a-fuck stage and they cancel the war due to lack of interest. So Ozone asked the pertinent question: motive. Could this Syria dust-up be over natural resources? Indeed it could. Then again this is the oldest “civilized” place on earth and that means there’s ten thousand years worth of axes to grind.
What about the chemical attack? Whodunnit and why? Who knows and who the fuck cares. It doesn’t matter because there’s no way to find out. Could Assad have been framed this time? Sure.
But if Assad did it, why would he do it? Maybe he figured that he could because the American threat of removing him is off the table. Or maybe he figured Americans as irresolute porn and drug addicts. Or maybe he thought Trump is a clown.
What did Trump’s little bombing run accomplish? Nothing. OK, maybe it nudged the needle. Er, wait, this means that the navy has to replenish the stock of missiles. That means money, money, money for defense contractors.

Unlike the famous chemical weapons “attack” portrayed by the BBC in Saving Syria’s Children, it does appear that in the latest incident at Idlib there was real horror inflicted by chemical attack of some kind. The question is who did it and why?
I am no fan of the Assad regime, and I have no problem using the word “regime” to describe it. Dictators do hold and win elections. I have lived in severe dictatorships and seen from the inside how they do it. The human rights abuses of the Assad regime have been well documented for decades.
But Bashar al Assad is neither stupid nor unsophisticated. Aided by Putin, he outwitted Obama by quickly giving up his chemical weapons to be destroyed and accepting transparency in verification. There is no justification for the destruction of Iraq, but if Saddam Hussein had been able to swallow pride as completely as Assad, he too could have had a very good chance of averting disaster.
Assad had seen his position go from strength to strength, thanks to Putin’s astute deployment of Russia’s limited military power. Militarily the balance had swung dramatically in Assad’s favour, while Trump had said the unsayable and acknowledged that putting Syria into the hands of Wahabbist crazies was not in the United States interest.
So I cannot conceive that Assad would risk throwing all of this away for the sake of a militarily insignificant small chemical weapons attack. It would be an act of the most extreme folly. It is not impossible – hubris is a great temptation to dictators – but given how Assad has played it so far, it seems out of character and extremely improbable. What is less improbable is a local battlefield decision by pro-Assad forces. In my close observation of dictatorial regimes, a fascinating feature is that they operate an image of the perfection of the state. They are highly adverse to admitting mistakes.
What did happen I do not profess to know. There are at least eleven major identifiable state and non-state forces involved in the fighting around Idlib. In going through them all and considering opportunity and motive for each, I continually find that those whose motive would be false flag stand to benefit a great deal more than those who might have been seeking military advantage.
I am therefore for now unconvinced that this was a deliberate use of chemical weapons by Assad forces. I do not rule it out, but it would take much more concrete evidence than currently offered to prove they did something so strongly and obviously against their own interest. But western governments and media have determined to make that the narrative, so the truth is, as so often in modern geo-politics, entirely incidental to the course of future events.

The one constant in this is the notion that the US government reserves the right to do whatever it wants whenever it wants to do it, specific goals and agreements notwithstanding. Syria is a domino on the way to Iran. That hasn’t changed, either.
The problem with peace is that it preserves the adversary. Assad could at some future date change his mind or make a big stink about the US not living up to its obligations. Of course if peace is the only way out for the time being the US will pursue it albeit halfheartedly knowing all along it can play the ace up its sleeve that everybody knows is there. The one big complicating factor is Assad’s invitation to Putin to please lend a finger for this leaky dike that threatens the both of them.
So we have a balancing act. On the one side is Uncle Sugar trying to inflame any situation of its own making into Assad’s (and by extension Putin’s) crime against humanity versus what might be considered the legitimate desire of Syria, Russia, and Iran trying to preserve their sovereignty and influence in their corner of the planet. And, like a two-year-old with a hammer in a china shop, Unctuous Snotty-nose won’t have it. Which leaves me and good portion of the rest of the world siding with two people I really don’t like that much.
The most recent U.S. bombing of Syria (frankly U.S. forces have been bombing Syria since at least September 2014) in response to a purported “weapons of mass destruction” chemical attack by Syrian government forces on civilians; will be a fabulous opportunity for another million Syrian refugees, Somalis, and Afghanis to head over to Germany this year.
Meanwhile, at the (soon to be former) home of Absolut vodka and Victoria Silvstedt, the Swedish Royal House, government, civil service and military are all in agreement – the Syrian chemical weapons attack justifies the truck attack in Stockholm and is the perfect opportunity to help bring another several 100,000s of refugees, asylum seekers and economic immigrants from the Third World.

I was watching Tucker Carlson’s show on Fox last night. It is the only one I watch. Tucker, for those who don’t know, has been decidedly anti-war and has been going toe-to-toe nightly with the hysterical democrats shaking in their boots over bogeyman Putin. Mr. Kunstler was a guest two weeks ago. Tucker was in the midst of skewering a guest over this no evidence gas attack thing when Fox broke for a war update, and Tucker was gone for the night. I doubt if it was coincidental. Fox couldn’t have Tucker questioning the mission at the same time all the networks, especially Fox, were promoting it. So, unless all the talk shows are cancelled for round-the-clock war coverage, I’m wondering if Tucker will be on at 9 tonight.

‘Low efficiency’: Only 23 Tomahawk missiles out of 59 reached Syrian airfield, Russian MoD says
The Russian Defense Ministry says the US missile strike on a Syrian airfield wasn’t very effective, with only 23 out of 59 Tomahawk missiles reaching their target. The locations of the remaining 36 missiles’ impact is now unknown, the ministry added.
The strike on the Shayrat airfield in Syria’s Homs Province destroyed a material storage depot, a training facility, a canteen, six MiG-23 aircraft in repair hangars and a radar station.
The runway, taxiways and the Syrian aircraft on the parking apron remained undamaged, Russia’s Defense Ministry spokesman said in a statement.
The ministry described the combat efficiency of the strike as “quite poor.”
“Russia made an earlier statement that the Syrian forces did not use chemical weapons. We are waiting for clarification from the US on undisputed – as they claim – evidence that it was the Syrian Army that deployed chemical weapons in the town of Khan Sheikhoun.”
The ministry also pointed to the events that followed the strikes, a large-scale offensive against the Syrian Army carried out by Islamic State and Al-Nusra Front terrorists.
“We hope that this offensive was in no way coordinated with the US,” the ministry said.
“A number of measures aimed at strengthening and improving the effectiveness of the Syrian air defense system will be implemented in the near future in order to protect the vital parts of the Syrian infrastructure,” Konashenkov said.

The situation around the firing of the 59 Tomahawks into Syria as more time passes, the more it looks like a “fixed fight”.
The Pentagon does not hide the fact that they warned Russians in advance where exactly they are going to shoot.
If the Kremlin wanted to stop it, it had more than enough leverage to do it. And so they used it to the fullest extent: Trump in US, and Putin in Syria. There would be an occasion to supply Assad with the latest air defense and airplanes.
Trump tackles two tasks in a very efficient way for himself – showing Comrade Xi his determination to strike at the North Korea, which will in turn respond to South Korea – and as a result, the entire trade of northeastern China, and possibly to the South, will be blocked off for a long time.
The second task is to confirm a Justice to the Supreme Court through the senate. But the first task – to bend China over for trade and financial concessions – is much more important.

All of their rather pitiful actions reek of pure attention getting in a suicide by cop kind of way. The Korean peninsula is basically expendable these days, as their economic value has mostly long since been off-shored elsewhere. So other than a few tens of thousands of GIs in the south (who are ultimately expendable too), who in DC really cares if they lay devastation on the south? The US has a lot of aging nukes that need to be refurbished anyway, so what better way to get rid of them and make room for some brand new stuff (all off-budget of course) than to renew atmospheric testing over the heads of some actual enemies again?

Unfortunately in this case, I really can not say everything I understood last night. But just to recall a few undeniable facts surrounding this bombing I can. To begin with, this bombing has finally revealed the religious character of this war, and it can only be understood from this point of view.
This is not a war between Russia and the United States, and therefore, yesterday, when I lost my faith in Donald Trump for a moment as a Messiah and the President of the United States, I instantly lost faith in much more important things.
But the speech of Hillary Clinton reminded me of the danger Donald Trump saved us all from and who helped him. By the way, this performance of Hillary Clinton double is very important – she spoke with joy and said much more than what could be said. By the way, the real Hillary would immediately understand that Pentagon was bombing her and not Assad, and would not have made such a mistake – because even if the American fleet released these tomahawks on Langley the effect would be less.
So the facts:
1. Yesterday it was exactly one hundred years since the USA entered the First World War on the side of Russia, for which this war was Orthodox, and the Serbs consider Tsar Nicholas II Sacred precisely because he made Christian Orthodoxy the principle of international politics.
2. The day before yesterday, representatives of the Democrats, defeated in Congress and in the US Senate, went all-in and began to frankly demand that the FBI arrest President Trump as a Russian spy.

At the time when Trump and Premier Xi were negotiating, not only did the missiles hit the Syrian canteens, but President of Philippine Duterte, who publicly humiliated President Obama six months ago, ordered his army to occupy one of the islands that China claims. And this is much more serious than the bombing of Syria.
6. Sarin has been prepared for something, but obviously not for what we see now on TV screens, and now the main enemy of Hillary is Trump, not Putin. And the attack of the Islamists, which we see now, was prepared not for launching of the tomahawks, but for this application of sarin.
If Putin or Assad had reason to believe that there were leftovers of sarin in this storehouse, they would not have started bombing these stores again today. Therefore, the sarin flew in on the planes, and most likely on the instructions of Hillary, and almost certainly on the orders of that general who was killed yesterday at the air base of Shirat.
And I would not be surprised if it turns out that at that moment when a tomahawk arrived, he was on a phone with President Assad.

I seriously doubt this, brh, because over 3,600 U.S. TACTOMs have been produced to date. It’s not like 45 using those 59 missiles in Syria put a big dent in our supply.
Besides, I think the final year of procurement is FY17. There won’t be any new Tomahawk missiles… because there is no need for new ones. With a 30-year service life the missile will be in the active inventory until the late 2040s.
Unless 45 gets really trigger happy and exhausts the supply… in which case I would not be surprised if those having the missiles rained upon them might retaliate by attacking China Lake, home of the Naval Air Warfare Center Weapons Division.

For all we know it might have been Putin putting Assad up to the chemical attack as a way of testing Trump. Putin might have said, do this for us Bashar, it would be of great help in scoping him out. The subtext of course being that Assad rules only because the Russians are propping him up.
People have been saying anyway that the deal that Russia struck with Assad and the US, to take away Assad’s poison gas, was full of shit. Putin left Assad with a stock of the nasty stuff which Assad used now and then since 2013.
In any case, American involvement is counterproductive. Imagine that the US hadn’t blundered into Kuwait all those years ago. Imagine that Obama hadn’t done the same in Libya. No matter the insistence that State Department professionals have deep knowledge of Middle East and the Muslim world in general, that supposed knowledge isn’t translated into anything good.
If you judge by results, for all intents and purposes the US might as well be operating in an abyss of ignorance. As far as the Tomahawk strike goes, it’s much ado about nothing. Assad still has chemical weapons and the airfield is back up and running.
Let’s assume that Trump had rock-hard intelligence that it was Assad behind the gas attacks. If Trump had wanted to send a message, he should have done what I had said earlier, send the cruise missiles through Assad’s living room windows. Thousand pound warheads going boom in Assad’s kitchen and bedroom would have been more effective than re-arranging some dirt on a desert airfield. A lot of other people would have taken notice too including Putin, Xi and Kid Kimchee.
Yeah, I know, it would violate international norms, it would invite retaliation in kind etc. But do you want to send a message or no?

And Russian commentators on television are still chewing excrements of Angela Merkel about European values and mean America, forcing Europeans to expand NATO.
But in just an hour it turned out that Trey Gowdy became the actual head of the congressional commission investigating the leakage by Susan Rice and the collision of the Tramp campaign with Russian hackers who intervened in the electoral campaign of Hillary Clinton, and then Premier Xi came to Washington to sell out Russia.
And the moment he was engaged in this noble affair in private with Donald Trump, the latter secretly took off his boot and with the thumb of his left foot pressed the button that launches the Tomahawks, and with the thumb of his right foot pressed the button confirming the US consent to the occupation by the Philippine Army of one of the islands in the South China Sea, which has long been the object of sexual desires of the aforementioned Premier Xi.
And the next day the Clinonoids realized that they had been taken for a ride, and that Trump showed how patriotic he was and how he could put Putin in place by bombing the empty concrete boxes and defective ancient MIG-23 built in 1980. I’m still inclined to think the relatively simpler answer is the best, at least until compelling evidence of some sort says otherwise. And yes, I do realize that “compelling evidence” often amounts to little more than “informed speculation” of some often ill-defined “higher nature” these days, but such is the nature of the carnival fun house hall of mirrors we inhabit these days.

Actually, I think I do, at least in broad strokes. Deterrence only ever works if there is genuine concern, love, in it.
That is, it does, often, work , for parents , or spouses in a good relationship , that sort of thing.

As for flogging , ( which I endorse ) the line wouldn’t be around the block, the line would instead be like the line in the old Soviet Union for some pairs of “western made ” ( i.e. Czech-made ) shoes ; 5 miles long.
Some info about flogging ; 50 lashes probably seems to the ignorant to be moderate. On the contrary, 50 lashes is pretty gruesome.
100 lashes might be a death sentence, 150 lashes almost certainly is a death sentence.
So, given our totally out – of -control , control-freak propensities, not only would the flogging line be 5 miles long, but the number of executions would be I suppose about 20 a day, which in a years time would no doubt result in a horrific stench and accusations of genocide.
Granted, you might be the rare exception ( ? ) , but, typically, whenever people suggest we should go back to corporal punishment , and I chime in with my endorsement , and I explain why I endorse it, then, surprise, surprise , ( I’m actually not at all surprised ) that conversation sort of abruptly peters out.
I endorse the death penalty too — because I think that, at least in some cases, it is actually an ACT OF MERCY.

Human history is a brutal reprise of, for the most part, pain, suffering, and base subsistence. What kept societies coherent was punishment, often in the form of the lash…and a general acceptance by a population of that need.
When a society advances from base subsistence, elevates itself from the 24 hour a day struggle to provide basic means, the human mind seems to wander, and seek a better, read humane, way to control the lower instincts. Social experiments become the norm…and few that vary from tried and true methods find success.
Penology…other than for punishment or warehousing, generally is a failure if you consider rates of recidivism. You can discuss rehabilitation until you are blue in the face. You can provide social workers, probation and parole officers to monitor offenders, you can give them soft words and guidance…for the most part to little value.
Corporal punishment still is practiced in parts of the world. We think it, in our first world comfort, barbaric. What is barbaric in the US is our crime rate, and the subhuman conditions in our jails.
I do not think that punishment should be meted out in public. I do not know how to administer a system of corporal punishment that would avoid the abuses that would occur. I cannot address the effects of the punishment on those charged with administration of the system.
What we have now, our system of penology, is…unworkable…what does history teach?

Off topic on a Saturday night. Recently I have been reading and researching the great antique/reproduction/bespoke picture frame shops of New York City. Many of these businesses were Jewish owned and started from the ground up, on basically nothing but determination, grit and a lot of accumulated knowledge and study. And of course, the occasional buying trip to Europe when the budget would allow.
When times were good, say the fifties, a frame shop owner might walk a couple of blocks with a Renoir, Van Gogh, or Picasso under their arm to drop off to a restorer.
When times were bad, museums would basically discard highly carved period frames in favor of frames that ‘didn’t compete’ with a painting. (Alas, many of Picasso’s cubist works were framed in heavily carved/gilt 17th century Spanish frames, chosen by Picasso himself.)
When times were good again, frames previously discarded for next to nothing in the sixties, might be worth fifty thousand or more in nineties.
Most of these businesses stayed family owned and all of them adapted with the times.
Outstanding artisans/craftsmen and extraordinarily hard working and forward thinking business people who cultivated repeat customer loyalty via extreme competence and expertise.

Let not your Art be troubled. What does a healthy society do with troubled art? I was reading a biography Sir Richard Burton. The last chapter tells how his wife destroyed so many of his papers, citing Ruskin as executor of J.W.M Turner’s collection, destroyed a large collection of obscene works. He anguished about it for weeks until finally, “I put myself in Tune with the Highest, till suddenly it flashed on me that perhaps I had been selected as the one capable of coming, in this matter, to a great decision. I took the hundreds of scrofulous sketches and paintings and burnt them, where they were, burnt them…..I am proud of it, proud (italics).
I found this troubling too. I want to see those drawings and oils of prostitutes “in every sort of abandonment.” But are we wrong, Buck? Perhaps Ruskin is right. Western Civilization was far healthier back then after all. But obviously unworthy people will destroy things they don’t understand, and with the same motives.
I like some paintings but never ‘got’ the frames, especially the gaudy ones.

My view is that much of our overly elaborate system of justice will become unaffordable. I won’t bore you with the litany of sins that brought us to this pass.
Elysianfield is right, consider the rate of recidivism. And then consider the expenditure of resources on these fool’s errands ie rehabilitation.
“Experts” constantly tout statistics that tell us to disbelieve our lyin’ eyes about the level of criminality we’re expected to tolerate. Well, maybe the “experts” motivation here is to cover up their vast incompetence in their chosen field.
No matter, our system of justice depends on vast amounts of money and facilities being available for exploitation. When it runs short, expect an equally vast simplification in legal codes and administration.
What shape will it take? Maybe something like this: The first time you get caught you get a warning. The second time you get flogged. The third time you get hanged. The reasoning being, you’ve been warned and then flogged and you didn’t bloody learn and we don’t have the inclination to waste time and money we don’t have so bye bye. No more multi-year incarceration, no more endless rounds of legal appeals. All done on the hop.
