First!

Always wanted to do that.

aaaaaw damn! well, second...

THIRD!!!!

so is that a quorum...? what do y all think of our prospects in the different fields of solar (passive, electric, steam gen)?

TEOTWAWKI

By slow gradual stages.

...given that infrastrucure poses its own set of hurdles...

@ P2C- wha-a-a-a-at??!

Tenth!!! FIX THE 403 SH!T!!!

He means,
The End Of The World As We Know It.

How slowly? We're not sure, as Europe is on the brink of financial implosion as we speak. (Which will likely lead to the breakup of the EU.)

What country would like to be saddled with another's debts? Balkanization, HO-ohhh...

JHK! Hope you get some decent insights into what's goin' on over yonder; should prove "interesting" at the very least! Rest up when you can.
Bon chance and godspeed.

...aaaaah, bach...i ve always considered the 'mad max' scenario to be the best case- meaning at least some survive to try to get it right...of course there s always jan michael vincent and his giant cockroaches...gotta love MAD...

Well just look at how many people feel compelled to comment when there's not even a posting. Shame on us. We need to all get a life.

Solar Power International in Dallas last week was AMAZING!

Not a lot of talk about doom and gloom though surprisingly? Thought all the Solar Tribes would be the choir for the long emergency, but most are thinking growth growth growth... I guess it is the one industry that will?

Cheers Clusterfuckers...

And enjoy your time abroad JHK, as you well know it may be your last.

PUSH ON. DO GOOD. KEEP SMILING.

solar guy! maybe you can refresh my memory: know anything about a solar research installation in the american southwest- possibly az or nm? it uses mirrored troughs to focus sunlight on a pipe that circulates oil which boils water to run a turbine...i saw a doc on PBS a few years ago that said it was the only one like it i couldn t find it in google...what i m wondering is whether the steam gen is more efficient than straight conversion to electricity, or what...looking forward to your 2%...[.02 (two cents)]

Darn, so we'll have to wait for more of your trenchant observations on the European debt/banking crisis, the capture of Gadaffi, and Occupy Wall Street until tomorrow. I don't blog much about foreign debt, but I did blog about the other two topics along with U.S. politics this week on Crazy Eddie's Motie News. Right now, the top post is my taking delight in Keith Olbermann calling Herman Cain's economic idea "Plan 999 from Outer Space." I love it when a meme I've been pushing catches on.

Sixteenth!!! Speaking of Jet Lag, I just flew from India, over the North Pole and my head is still in a whirlwind...

(JHK will probably mention something tomorrow that relates to the general zeitgeist he's undoubtably sensing in the European air when he peeps out.)

Check out the domino graphic. (Scroll down just a bit.) This is how things begin to stutter and fail as the Long Emergency jams and grinds into second gear...

(Sorry for commenting; should prove relevant however.)

"all get a life"
I don't know about that, Mr/Ms Muller.
There are the comments on JHK's opus for the week.
And there is the CFN thread dialog.

Both are worthy of note.

I'd like to think that JHK's tech guy is using this Monday to redo the software to stop the spam and nastiness - while still allowing nascent brilliance to easily shine on.

Or perhaps this is a conspiracy. Only those of us who post today will ever be allowed to post.

Or perhaps the opposite is the case.

Do us a favor, rent a VW Polo (or the new VW Up!)or a Ford Ka, or one of those other cute little cars not for sale in America, and report back on its performance. Because if Americans won't take mass transit, they should at LEAST be open to minicars that use a lot less gas! I know Rush Limbaugh would be against getting one, because he can't fit into one.

Damn, POC's got me curious about the manner of our extermination/survival now. Should probably post just to be safe. If doing so happens to blacklist me, oh well, I have spinach and leeks to plant anyway.

"Well just look at how many people feel compelled to comment when there's not even a posting. Shame on us. We need to all get a life."

Some of us don't always read Jim's post even when there is one!! I know the world's coming apart. I get that. I'm mostly here to talk about how to shore up the dyke before ALL of the water leaks out.

JIM...................I hope you and others here write about the Mexican Trucks headed el norte.
ByeBye to the Trucking Industry....
The Chinese goods will port in Mexico now....
More wetbacks,crack,and Union Busting........
blame Clinton and NAFTA.

O3: thanks (i think; tho it seems to be one of those cases of 'once you ve seen it, it refuses to be unseen')...and correct me if i m wrong, but isn t this an "open" forum- so no need to apologize...and besides, i know the proverbial apple is already shiny enough, but i enjoy reading your posts even if i don t agree 100%...so feel free to poke & joke, as it were...

@hmull: so some of us CAN have a life, troll! besides, didn t you have to log on to this site in order to try to belittle us into leaving the discussion? PUNK!! tripp: on a personal note- have you ever tried making pesto w/ fresh basil, parsley, oregano (not much) and spinach? superfood, i assure you oh, and try planting your parsley in the fall- when it comes back up in the spring, it is noticeably stronger and tastier...got that one from my pop- an experiment that works well, at least down here in the clime of middle tn...

thought i would go ahead and comment anyway......

jim, i disagree because you are wrong and dont know anything. the comments you made(sorry ,will make) dont make any sense. you should re-think what you havent thought yet.

now i dont have to actually read the monday article...and can watch reruns of amerikan idol, i mean listen to obama speeches.

i think the biggest challenge is the safety issue, in that there is none until we are ALL in the little bitty cute deadly things...really personally, the rush limblob angle is only an endorsement of course you could all do what i do, & get on a motorcycle...that would make me feel safer too

I planted a load of parsley (flat leaved Italian) a few weeks ago, and it's coming along slowly. My rabbits love it (as do the humans around here), and the single specimen we had this year provided more fodder than I would have thought possible, so we just upped the ante on that one (just as we upped the ante on rabbits!). Also increased the amount of Swiss Chard, spinach, arugula, lettuce, chicory, broccoli, and carrots, and we're working on more kale. Something unseen around here likes kale sprouts a lot. If we can grow all of those greens that we need, and feed all the rabbits we want off of them too, I'll feel like we've taken a giant stride forward in self-reliance.

On the wild-crafting side of transition, I found a huge flush of oyster mushrooms one day while we were riding horses (hey, they were foxtrotters, charlie!) in Missouri last week. Cooked em up over the campfire with some butter, salt, pepper, and garlic, and thrilled the crowd. That kind of stuff is pretty fun! Although in retrospect I shoulda gathered up some of the wild chives that were growing around the camp and included them, too...

Just drove thru middle Tennessee on the way back; where are you?

lol:)

I've always heard that one is twice as likely to survive an accident in a big car, but half as likely to get in one in the first place in a small car. Vis a vis, the size of the car can potentially tell us a lot about a person's worldview!

Never tried pesto quite like you describe; next time we make it we'll mix it up a bit!

chuckle...! could be a groundhog after the kale...they will decimate your okra & sweetpotatoes (Q?!) as well- and their meat is kinda greasy & stringy, so unless you are REALLY hungry...look for him early in the morning or around dusk i m a little west of nashville...yerself? oh yeah, did you catch the handle?: it s international radio code for 'CF', which is short for clusterfuck- i thought it was appropo, & funny...any way, good luck w/ the varmints, and enjoy the wabbit stew!

"oh yeah, did you catch the handle?: it s international radio code for 'CF', which is short for clusterfuck- "

I did some time in the Air Force. Like the handle. We're in Tifton, GA, with all the sand, humidity, and gnats. For now.

Jim, if you don't take the time to take the bullet train from Gothenburg up here to Stockholm, the most beautiful, livable, walkable and bike-friendly city in Europe (and maybe the world), then you're out of your American mind. If you do, I'd be glad to show you around: 070 634 554

Dammit. I suppose I should start reading the next book then. What the hell you doing over there any way?

Finland: Priest accused of inciting religious hatred for calling jihad terrorists "terrorists"
This out-Orwells Orwell....

"Finnish priest persecuted for speaking out against terrorists," from RT, April 7 (thanks to Paul):

A priest in Finland is being accused of inciting religious hatred after he described one of the world's most-wanted criminals as a 'terrorist'.

Police have questioned Pastor Juha Molari after he gave an interview to RT in which he discussed Doku Umarov, the man behind the Moscow metro and airport bombings.
Russia's number one outlaw Chechen terrorist Doku Umarov is also high-up on the international most-wanted list. But it seems one of Russia's neighbors isn't interested in helping bring him to justice.

“I use the word terrorist. They use the word president,” Molari explains.

The pastor has been a long-time critic of a website called the Kavkaz Center, where extremists freely express their views.

The site was the first to publish the terrorist's words on the attacks claimed by Umarov, and is banned in many European countries but freely operates in Finland.

Apart from facing being defrocked for speaking out against Doku Umarov and his internet mouthpiece, Juha Molari is receiving threats of a different kind.

“We advise you to stop your activity against the Kavkaz Center. If you don’t come to your senses we’ll cut off the heads of you and your family”, one of them says.

If it's the only one, then the experimental solar plant in question is located in the Mojave desert somewhere in the Boron/Barstow area. I've driven past it before. Apparently the heat transfer liquid media, which has a catchy psuedo scientific name that I can't remember, has been blamed for a higher than normal birth defect rate among plant employees. It seems that nothing comes without a price.

Thanks for the info.
And how, exactly, does this affect you?

That pesto sounds great!
Parsley planting is kinda out of the question h'yar, as we're expecting some snow on Thursday.
(I've got myself in a tither trying to make more usable niches off the drive to push the giant piles of white wonderfulness. Getting there, but it's gonna be tight, time-wise, and it's taking me away from finishing up on the firewood. Got enough for the winter, but the remainder is in my way for a snow-pushing spot! Grrrr, ya cain't win, I tells ya!)

I knew there was a reason why I kept forgetting to get my share of cluster. See you tomorrow.

38!

geez that sucks!! and i guess there s no real push for an alternative (to the alternative right!) since the whole thing has been discredited...had hopes... zone, good luck and good health gettin' all THAT done!

Jimbo...you really need to kick back and throttle down a notch. You're stressing yourself out and the rest of the world who hangs on your every Monday morning column as well. Get some rest, take a break and get back to the CF Nation in a month or so. You're pressing, Jimbo. Don't give yourself a heart attack. The world will still be here, believe me. You're a legend in your own mind, big guy.

Apparently this blog needs JHK to survive.
That's very interesting.

You're a leader, JHK.
Lead wisely.

========================
It is interesting that I was writing this post concurrently with Thomas99 - who wrote something that was approximately - the EXACT opposite idea.

Very interesting, hey?

42nd

It is also interesting that this comment thread was more "self-sustaining?" about a month ago before all of the 403 bannings started.

Without Q, Wage, Cash and several other regulars - we don't have enough deep and/or contrary thinkers to sustain the conversation.

This is not a knock against JHK, by any means.

But without regular readers and a few men and women willing to fight about important ideas - - -

what's the point?

well prog, you got anyyhing in particular you want to run up the ol' flagpole? i mean, i can spell purty good til Q shows back up, and i ll do my best to pick your theses apart if you just damned want me to...as for wage, i ll just have to agree to agree with you there..

It's not a knock against Tripp and Charlie Foxtrot (November) either.

But I'm probably in essential agreement about those two about most of the essentials.

And Tripp and I wore out the topic of "to vaccinate or/not to vaccinate" - many, many Moons ago.

And I'm not sure an argument about optimum acreage for pasturing a plow mule - is going to be of interest to very many other folks.

;-)

Tripp - I will mention that you neglected to plug your blog today. Don't be shy about your work at
SmallBatch.

I won't give the live link - CFN regulars are paranoid enough as it is. But it's easy enough to Google "smallbatch."

I will say that if JHK gets himself run over by a luggage cart - that we'll have to reconstitute CFN somewhere. Your blog would be my first thought, in such a circumstance, Tripp.
(Lord (lord?) help you.)

I'm not sure I'd be much help at my one semi-published email address - betterhotwater @ aol . com.
I'm way too slow with responses.
If I respond at all. hah!

==============
Lbendet - you have any new on-the-ground information about the Occupy Wall Street crowd for us?

"up the ol' flagpole" you ask, CF?

My "hot button" issue is growth of the US population due to LEGAL and illegal immigration.

I think that's got the potential to finish making the Earth unfit for human habitation - if that's not already baked into the cake anyway.

But only asoka. would disagree with me about that - and our disagreements were so verbally violent that we tended to block any possibility of more nuanced CFN debate. Which was too bad.

I don't know why I'm speaking in past tense - as though I were eulogizing this website, already.

Speaking of immigration -

Besides the aformentioned asoka., only one other poster, Mila51, had ever expressed strong disagreement with me as regards reducing US immigration - until early last week.
(although Marlin disengaged over the topic before we really got into the underlying logic. hey whiskey september papa, correct?)

Then last Monday morning - one of our "hit-and-run-and-plug-your-own-blog" regulars - KulturCritic -

Called me an "idiot." - over immigration, of all things?

It was so out of character for the man, who has a PhD in Russian Lit, or philosophy, or something - that I wrote it off to his screenname probably being hacked.

But it has been preying on my mind a bit
- who would have hacked him? -

Do you suppose JHK's webmanager guy is secretly in favor of open borders and a US population of 600 million plus?

That seems out of character.
But who knows?

Sierra
my bad
Is there a Q who watches for proper use of the
international radiotelephony spelling alphabet?

Probably not.

I'm a little bored.
Perhaps I'll see if there is a maximum number of posts within some minimum time period -

That will get one flagged, banned, and 403'ed.

If this posts -
Apparently those numbers are not 7 posts
In less than an hour.

9 posts in less than an hour?

JHK - I do believe your website needs you.

CF on!

...think i can tackle that one: immediately, it s the population growth of the planet in general that makes life untenable- and for everybody, not just americans look, i hated mexicans for a long time bc i m a construction worker, & they were "taking my jobs"; one almost killed me on my bike and he drove off w/ an 8x11 piece of paper the trooper called his 'license, sir'; i coulda gone on all day...those arguments don t hold up though when you put yourself in his place...wouldn t you come if you were him? we as earthlings need to get our shit together and mend conditions to the point jose or hamid or kunta (i swear i just couldn t think of an african name off the top of my head i SWEAR) are compelled to saturate a given population center in order to feed his kids... more next post...

We are the 99% and I think this little jet-lag incident proves that we can get along quite well without JHK. Occupy Clusterfuck!

so i think the time that even enforceing regulations is passed- for FUSofA, holland, or any other hotspot, as resource allocation/distribution is already so far out of whack...sure deportation is possible, at least in theory, but until the underlying disparities around the world are addressed, There But For The Chance Of An Imaginary Line Go You AND I...whatcher 2% on THOSE apples?

"..we as earthlings need to get our shit together and mend conditions to the point..."
-cf-

Look, I don't disagree with that point. I just don't know how we're supposed to do it - as US citizens - when we're allowing the US population to climb higher and higher and higher.

If we could stabilize our own population - then we'd be in a position to help others.

===============
Would I come to the US if I were your hypothetical Mexican*.
Maybe - for a definite period of a few years so I could "get rich" and return to Mexico. maybe.

Would I leave my family and friends - knowing that the "peak everything" crowd predicts a slowly accelerating global collapse.

HELL NO. I'd stay home and try to make things better there.

----------------
It is interesting that you immediately start talking about *Mexicans - I guess 'cause they are illegal.

We've got 1 million LEGAL immigrants coming into the US every year now.

Into a country that has outsourced its low-skilled jobs. And that has high and growing unemployment.

On a national landmass that barely supported 20 million native inhabitants - no oil, remember?

Thought I heard my name mentioned. All we need is gas and guns in the coming decay of civilization; we can steal the rest. How's that for hope and change?

correction: ^are NOT compelled (Q???!!!) @zappnin: we are the 98%- jhk provides the .02

bleak...

"..but until the underlying disparities around the world are addressed,"
-cf-

That is an OK argument for saying we can't stop all of the ILLEGAL immigration, CF.

But illegal immigration is a drop in the bucket compared to LEGAL immigration.
Which we as a country officially sanction and encourage - with REAL financial subsidies - right now.

=================
"underlying disparities" - ???

Either we magically build the rest of the world's population up to US levels of prosperity - -

Or we wait for US standards of living to reduce lower - until no one wants to immigrate here anymore.

I don't believe in magic.
I do believe in fighting when all other options are exhausted.

Lest we ALL die, and not live.

i still understand and generally agree i mentioned mexicans because that s the biggest, closest demographic affecting us here on the ground...and what i have personal experience with...thing is, out-sourceing jobs to taiwan, india, china etc is accomplishing the same wage depression for corporations- shouldn t that be illegal emmigration?! as to what to do, either take our earth back, or make em give it back (from the corporate military complex) hey i never said it was gonna be easy or painless!

Probably it's morning over there and JHK is going over the free-for-all here in the comments ad-lib...

The usual comment from ASPO ARTICLE 1037 is about railway rebuild; Army/Guard rebuilding the dormant branch line rail footprint...

Secondary target; Rescope the North American Water & Power Alliance (NAWAPA) to enable aquifer recharge, save pumping energy and prepare marginal agricultural areas for needed victuals production as overseas foodstuffs (aviation) are diminished in volume.

ATA says new truck orders jump over 50%, mostly diesel trucks -to run on fumes in a few years? Michael Klare has article (Is Washington Running Out Of Gas)in "tomdispatchdotcom", kind of an update about the cone of silence on Peaking Oil from the guvmint... -and mainline press-

But we yield the floor to the EU (EeeYuuu) financial shenanigans...

i mean disparities in standards of living, not population numbers- my problem is with the governments and monied(Q???) interests in collusion to maintain inequities which keep our attention on our neighbors they mean our enemies i mean neighbors...machiavellian, i know, but they seem to have taken the instructions seriously...i used to think education of the masses was the way to get some parity...until i saw that doc about the baboons who made the new baboons be nice- now for the first time i can see a case for at least one rightous war...

"shouldn t that be illegal emmigration?!"
-cf-

Yep, it's also American style corporate insanity to outsource the manufacturing while the population climbs inexorably to an unsustainable number.

Somebody benefits from the big number -short term
Somebody benefits from the outsourcing-short term

Who looks out for US and world citizens-long term

There are a couple of organizations to which I donate my money and my time.
One is FAIR
The other is NumbersUSA

Check their websites. There's no racism.
There is logical examination of the ultimate consequences of out-of-control US immigration.

I'm still looking for a good world wide population control group to join.

Because I'll agree with you - that's an important issue, too. Maybe MORE important. But we have to be honest about our abilities to deal with it - as US citizens, from inside the US.

-on aquifer recharge-

ASPO - we talk on CFN occasionally about aquifer depletion. Especially, the Ogallala comes up, because it's so important to US big ag.

How possible would it be to run surface water into that aquifer, deliberately, for recharge.

What would be the legal, environmental, and technical questions?

==================
And on your trains. I admire your persistence, man.

You have seen the figures that passenger rail is only slightly more efficient in passenger miles per gallon (PMPG) - than is a fully loaded 767?

And that a small diesel passenger car - with 4 passengers - beats both of them by a large margin, again in PMPG.

I look at those numbers and think we'll be moving around a whole lot less in this country, before too long.

And you're right - most of the fuel is going to have to go to just moving basic foodstuffs.

What do you think?

granted, but i guess you ve noticed how easy it is for the racist label to be slapped around...i m afraid we are headed for the population control mechanism we came up with first- and at the behest of our fearsome leaders, which will be nice and enriching for them; just deadly for us grunts unless We The People Of Earth decide nuff is enuff...

...apso, those are both interesting topics- the 1st i have nt heard anything about; the 2nd i have nt thought about forever...thanks p2c...

Stop your whine!! Everything is fine. The Senate rejected part of a jobs bill the other day that would have given communities more money to hire, train, fire fighters and teachers. Same day New York State announced that 40 to 100 million is going to the Buffalo Bills to refurb their stadium. I was a volunteer fire fighter, and its easy, who wants to pay a guy $15 an hour to come in a burning house to save your butt, when you can pay millions to some rich guy to catch a ball. The New America, and phew who needs teachers?, they are dangerous, they encourage people to ask questions, and asking questions is bad. Log off and go back to your tv, Homer Simpson knows TV is your friend. Surprise, great year for tomaotes, lets go can!

(4) By searching,1 carefully at the Memorandum of Agreement it is obvious that the actinic,1 contaminants in the DEP acceding,1 are not the aforementioned,1 actinic,1 contaminants that can be harmful to the backbone,1 of the concrete or to the addiction,1 of assertive,1 actinic,1 contaminants to bite,1 embedded steel. When certain chemicals are present in the beach,1 and soil used as the “aggregate” or the mixing soil that is added to cement to make concrete they can weaken or affect other backdrop,1 of the concrete. These effects may happen over time and consequently may not be detected using temperature and slump tests on the not-yet-hardened concrete. The Joint Venture (the state and Bechtel) was required to sample portions of the concrete in all Big Dig contracts for strength. If the aggregate used to make this same concrete contained chemical contaminants that do not affect concrete strength, but can corrode steel accessories,1 rapidly how would we know? Well, acutely,1 we analysis,1 the standards, right? That way we consistently,1 mix in aggregate that does not alloy,1 the concrete in means,1 that can be adverse,1.

(3) During construction, there seemed to be an advancing,1 safety process regarding the concrete. Footage in Big Dig IV: Still Working contained a segment on the concrete testing process that was overseen by the Joint Venture of Bechtel and the Massachusetts Highway Department. This footage will anon,http://www.scribloo.com/index.php?do=/Candice314/blog/what-should-i-eat-to-lose-weight-16-high-fiber-and-low-fat/,1 be accessible,1 at our web site, area,1 we will aswell,1 uncover what we consider to be the design change that is causing connected,1 leaks in the I-93 tunnel.

Next we look at the architecture,1 change that may be the primary cause of I-93 tunnel leaks. This one change might have set in motion an on-going set of problems with downtown leaks in Boston's Central Artery/Tunnel.

When I looked for civic,1 standards on chemical contaminants and concrete mix, I found only an early attempt in Australia (1994-1996) to develop such construction standards for recycled material used in concrete construction. Many added,1 Internet references accurate,1 to a abridgement,1 of the blazon,1 of absolute,1 testing over time that could advance,1 to such standards. Perhaps the CA/T was following a set of engineering standards of which I am not acquainted,1. Of greatest concern is for the accessible,1 to be informed about which chemical contaminates can affect the strength and backbone,1 of the concrete and which were present in what percentages in the recycled fill used throughout the CA/T tunnels. It is decidedly,1 important that an absolute,1 evaluation team makes a thorough investigation of the chemical properties of the recycled aggregate soil used throughout the project. This could help to analyze,1 areas that can be accepted,1 to have premature corrosion of steel rods embedded in concrete or that cause the concrete to aggrandize,1 or crumble or leak.

In Big Dig II: Down Under, co-producer Arnie Reisman and I advised,1 this dirt and absitively,1 to chase,1 the good news. The uncontaminated clay portions of this fill were traveling,1 to be used to cap Spectacle Island and hundreds of Massachusetts landfills, an appropriate reuse of added,1 clay materials. We were assured that there was a dirt-testing lab and that all of the contaminated soil was getting,1 appropriately,1 distributed and reviewed by the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP). We were handed stacks of abstract,1, interagency agreements apropos,1 contaminated materials and abounding,1, abounding,1 columnist,1 releases about the massive volume of dirt getting,1 activated,1 and processed. Occasionally there was other acceptable,1 news on the disposition of the dirt. There were mountains of dirt and any disposition was could cause,1 for anniversary,1. After all, any bare,1 dirt was going to cost the activity,1 and the managers big money for disposal.
(2) Digging back through my Big Dig abstracts,1 I unearthed a 1992 Memorandum of Understanding between the Department of Environmental Protection and the Massachusetts Highway Department about the “contaminated materials” in the clay,1. This addressed the action,1 for blank,1 and inspections of the clay,1 for specific chemicals communicable,1 the soil that are adverse,1 to bodies,1 and wildlife. Of advance,1, those employees at the accompaniment,1 DEP who were “overseeing“ the process with the Big Dig were salaried by the Massachusetts Highway Department and the Central Artery Tunnel Project. We won’t even activate,1 to examine that closet. Why? Because right now we are aggravating,1 to figure out the rabbit in the hat for Mitt’s Magic Show about the anchor bolts.

Anchor bolts will beggarly,1 actual,1 little if this construction mess in city,1 Boston is the aftereffect,1 of mixing contaminated dirt and fill into the composition of the concrete beam,1, walls or floor. Here is how the ambush,1 ability,1 have been done:

©2006, Dale Orlando

Wake up. Remove your boring,1 from the anchor bolts and focus on the other end of the suspension rods within the ceiling panels themselves. We see a concrete ceiling with newly anchored,1 anchor bolts on the top and steel cable rods anchored,1 in 3-ton concrete slabs abeyant,1 beneath on the added,1 end of the cable. No steel beams abide,1 in the I-90 connector to actualize,1 the desirable steel-bolted-to-steel basement,1. So any suspended cable will only behave as able-bodied,1 as the concrete on either end allows it to behave. If I put an anchor bolt in a wad of silly putty and hang a rod embedded in 5 lbs. of clay,1 adobe,1 from it…well it’s blind,1 there with a bound,1 lifespan, I don’t affliction,1 how new the anchor bolt might be.

While we will continue to investigate this abeyant,1 concrete accident,1 and analysis,1 the documents and tapes at our disposal, anyone,1 with far greater assets,1, like the mainstream media needs to examine the CA/T deals made with contractors. How much of the ahead,1 used dirt and debris from demolition, dredged or excavated material were anniversary,1 of these contractors required to reuse in their concrete? Was it tested for the alley,1 salts and other contaminants that may not be immediately harmful to people and therefore disqualified,1 usable by the DEP? Were those contaminates in sufficient abundance,1 to affectation,1 problems as a concrete aggregate? Does the effort to get rid of over 4,000 miles of soil through recycling and to save money or make money from disposal of the fill now threaten our lives with attenuated,1 or corrosive concrete? Our approaching,1 could depend aloft,1 understanding the nature of these counterfeit,1 caverns before the Big Dig becomes the Big Tomb. Remember, look beyond Mitt’s Magic Show to see how this rabbit was blimp,1 into the hole in the first place.

So 12 years of Republican controlled reassurances that the harmful soil was being disposed of properly failed to explain to us that the tests were only for the chemicals and soil properties directly alarming,1 to humans, for example, piles of dirt that contained mercury. The tests and press releases from the CA/T in 1991-1995 did not call,1 the concentrations of chemical contaminants in fill that could cause premature collapse of the tunnel ceiling or walls from faulty concrete. We are attempting to get those listed on our web website,1 at [ . We would appreciate audition,1 from any acceptance,1, engineers or chemical engineers who can provide clarification on this amount,1. We will column,1 your information and we will post any established standards for contaminates used in concrete aggregates forth,1 with any standards used by the CA/T in disposition of the dirt back into the Artery construction.

The blubbering,1 and abject,1 by Boston columnists over how quickly Governor Mitt Romney baffled,1 the basics,1 and bolts of Big Dig advice,1 is frightening. I anticipate,1 his new found leadership is a aberration,1. In a slick appearance,1 of “control” over the Central Artery Tunnel abortion,1, Mitt commands account,1 with a flick of his abracadabra,1 arrow,1. The media swoon. It looks like a Boston rendition of Chicago; Bechtel as Roxie Hart kept safe and comfy in the lap of master puppeteer Mitt Romney, arena,1 Billy Flynn. Nice guy, cute guy, absolute,1 adorable,1 when he is home assuming,1 he cares, great song and dance man, but there is more going on here than screwing in anchor bolts. Much harder questions need to be asked and investigated by the bounded,1 media and by independent safety engineers to assure that no more 3-ton ceiling slabs land on commuters or travelers. But, as with any good magic show, Mitt has all eyes trained on the anchor bolts while he tries to convince the public jury that the real accountability,1 lies with Matt Amarillo and that Bechtel should be free to just,1 walk out the door.

This past winter, a small Big Dig contractor was accused and accusable,1 for allegedly,1 mixing too much old concrete in with new concrete to create a abominable,1 mix that may be contributing to some leaks in the I-93 tunnel underneath Boston. This was a red banderole,1 that something,1 may be NOT O.K. with at atomic,1 some of the concrete but no one really noticed.

First, yield,1 a absolutely,1 close look at the bootless,1 epoxy captivation,1 the anchor bolts that append,1 the 3-ton concrete ceiling panels. Here are some of the easy to follow instructions for construction workers regarding epoxy-
“Prior to application, all areas must be chargeless,1 of contamination such as waxes, oils, loose concrete, dirt, curing compounds, etc. Acid etching, followed by proper neutralization and rinsing, is usually acceptable if the concrete is in excellent action,1, not contaminated.” (accent,1 abundance,1).

Just when we anticipation,1 it was going to be safe to go back in the Central Artery Tunnels in Boston, the Governor let us know that more anchor bolts were faulty in several lanes of I-90 and perhaps in more tunnels. One of the problems with listening to Governor Romney, Turnpike Chair Matt Amarillo or most CA/T predecessors is that they are lawyers and businessmen, not engineers. So take a minute during the Magic Mitt Show to visit the CA/T with my tunnel vision because something does not {smell|that appears to that appears to smell,1,1} right. Even admitting,1 the laser light is dazzling and the hard hat adds such agreeableness,1. I’m not accessible,1 to bright,1 the deck of the Super Scoop barge for
a absolute,1 victory photo-op.

(1) While a lot of,1 eyes follow the ablaze,1 and focus on anchor bolts, our current investigation shows that there is a all-around,1 appeal,1 for recycled construction articles,1. This demand has added,1 essentially,1 during the accomplished,1 two decades. The Big Dig produced over 4,000 miles and over 11 million cubic feet of dirt in the early digging stages. Most of this dirt and debris was processed for contamination and recycled into the Big Dig as clay landfill capping actual,1, project backfill and as accumulated,1 (mix) for the tons and tons of concrete bare,1 for the project. The miles of added,1 dirt came from the annihilation,1 at the airport, the dredging of the harbor floor by the Super Scoop for the Ted Williams Tunnel, the digging of the coffer dam, blasting,http://www.inventive-internet.com/subscribe/forums/viewtopic.php?p=720689#720689,1 of miles beneath,1 downtown Boston for the Tip O’Neil Tunnel, digging out tunnel entrances, etc.

Drum Roll-Mitt’s shines a laser light into the aphotic,1 tunnel and we hear the “ooows” and “ahhhs” over the new, agleam,1 anchor bolts, and a slight of hand trick begins. Will the rabbit now stay in the hole or pop out of the hard hat?
